Rangers at Devils … Lundqvist to practice today, Miller to play tonight

61

The Rangers are in Newark Saturday night to finish their preseason home-and-home with the Devils.

J.T. Miller makes his preseason debut, in Pavel Buchnevich’s training camp spot on a line with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad. That should be interesting. Jimmy Vesey also gets another look, on a line with Philip McRae and Nicklas Jensen.

Also, while the Rangers are in Jersey for their morning skate, back home Henrik Lundqvist will be practicing with the non-game group. According to Alain Vigneault, Lundqvist is expected to play one and a half of the final three preseason games (Monday in Philly, Tuesday in Brooklyn, Thursday at home against the Flyers). Lundqvist will almost certainly play part of all of the Thursday game since there is a week’s worth of break between the preseason finale and the regular-season opener.

On Friday the Rangers sent goalies Brandon Halverson and Jeff Malcolm to Hartford (AHL), leaving 48 players in camp.

They are:

Forwards (28): Chris Brown, Pavel Buchnevich, Jesper Fast, Steven Fogarty, Gabriel Fontaine, Nathan Gerbe, Tanner Glass, Michael Grabner, Ryan Gropp, Kevin Hayes, Marek Hrivik, Nicklas Jensen, Josh Jooris, Robin Kovacs, Chris Kreider, Maxim Lapierre, Oscar Lindberg, Philip McRae, J.T. Miller, Rick Nash, Cristoval Nieves, Brandon Pirri, Derek Stepan, Malte Stromwall, Adam Tambellini, Jimmy Vesey, Mika Zibanejad, Mats Zuccarello

Defensemen (16): Calle Andersson, Mat Bodie, Adam Clendening, Sean Day, John Gilmour, Dan Girardi, Ryan Graves, Nick Holden, Tommy Hughes, Kevin Klein, Ryan McDonagh, Dylan McIlrath, Michael Paliotta, Brady Skjei, Marc Staal, Chris Summers

Goaltenders (4): Magnus Hellberg, Henrik Lundqvist, Antti Raanta, Mackenzie Skapski

Tonight’s probable lineup:
Kreider-Zibanejad-Miller
Vesey-McRae-Jensen
Grabner-Gerbe-Fast

  1. What do they see in Bodie that they keep wasting time on him? Where did this McRae come from all of a sudden?

Why are they wasting so much time on Brown?

Looks like they are giving Jensen and Lapierre a serious look 3 games in a row for them while some rookies didn’t even get 1 game yet.

Watching Gerbe on the PK you just can’t help but notice how much smaller he is than everybody else.

  2. Bdl
I’m 100% with you on fast, no reason for him to be in the top 13…none.

Glad to see someone else finally come around with me on skjel, he’s not going to start the year with the rangers…sorry Brady bunch.

  3. If you want a guy who plays with snarl, I would much rather have Lapierre over Glass. Sign him for $900k and send Glass packing.

Why no Nieves and Fogarty. Did either one get hurt in Traverse City?

  4. Didn’t Nieves come back from Traverse City with a 4-6 week injury?
    Refresh, Refresh, Refresh!!!

  5. Jeez Pablo. You’re about to set a fan record for dumping crap on a team in preseason. let’s review
Vesey sucks, Buchnevich is horrible, Pirri is a waste of time, Skeji is gonna get beat wide every game, a report comes out for 30 seconds that Hayes is in better shape than last year a couple people discuss it and they’re drinking kool aid. To quote Allan from the first ‘Hangover’ movie (which sucked it was a joke of a movie, if you think it was entertaining keep telling yourself that while drinking the hollywood kool aid)
“who is this guy and why is he SO MEAN!???!”

  6. I am using the Costanza principle when it comes to Pablo – always go with the opposite of whatever he says

  7. Okay I’m getting the feeling that by the end of this season either Doodie or BDL will be in a padded cell muttering “yesper” to themselves over and over and over again….

  8. Nice try jamesg, but I have only said positive things about Vesey, Pirri and Skjei. maybe you confused me with somebody else or you just straight up making up lies?

  9. Good afternoon, boneheads!
Well, it’s still officially morning here. This Matthews thingy is messing up our afternoon plans. Looks like a lot of rain in Cartagena.
So have we traded everyone yet? Especially the ones that have NMC/NTC clause?

  10. Ilb
What is auston matthews doing in Colombia? Visiting the ice cream shops? And is he bothering you or something by causing lines? Did he take the last scoop of ice cream that you wanted?

  11. It is an important year for Hayes, I agree. I did notice a different looking Hayes the other night. His skating was better, and his focus seemed to be better. He was just under 50% on face offs, and was responsible in his own. He did dangle to much. I thought that was his only negative.

  12. If staal were half price maybe Winnipeg would be interested, but not for Yoruba unless some much younger pieces and picks are coming too

  13. I think Hayes was looking for Vesey too much, BDL. He did make a few good moves that were necessary while entering the zone. My sense is that he wants to play with his buddy on the same line. It’s up to AV to determine whether it the best for the team or not.

  14. I must say that this years camp has me interested. It appears that the skill level has been improved, especially up front. I am fine with Holden, who did a very good job on a bad defensive team in Colorado last season. I remain fearful of the Rangers giving up some sort of ransom for Cam Fowler. I have season tickets in Anaheim and Fowler is horrid in his own zone. He is good on the PP and he does move the puck better than anyone they have now. Funny thing is that Anaheim is not a cap team, but they also have yet to sign 2 of their most important young players, Rakell and Lindholm. I don’t think Anaheim would be interested in Nash, and what they need os forward prospects as they are rich in young defenseman.

  15. The ball is so jacked-up this season that innocent pop-ups are hitting the roofs of domed stadiums.

  16. “Staal, Hayes and Buchnevich for Trouba? Is that Trouba or Erik Karlsson?”

ok throw in a 2nd or 3rd rounder to balance it out.

  17. Just thought of Gordie Howe’s answer to Dick Cavett years ago about why hockey players wear a cup but not a helmet. Gordie: “You can always hire someone to do your thinking for you.” Cracks me up every time.

  18. I’m as patriotic as anybody, but I really don’t like some of the U.S. golfers and really do like some of the Euro golfers, and in some of these matches I find myself pulling for the better guys.

  19. Sometimes, when an “enemy” hockey player is interviewed, it bothers me when I like the guy. :)

  20. I watch golf 4 times a year only the majors. By far the Ryder cup blows those away. What a great event.

  21. Nash to Anaheim for Fowler I like that TYM he’s the only Ranger I’m certain won’t wind up in a penguin uniform

  22. “Zucc and Skjei, for Trouba is the way to go.”

trade away our top point producer AND arguably top prospect for a guy that wants 6 mil?

  23. I am not sold on Trouba. He is a 3rd pairing guy in WInnipeg. He wants big bucks. Why give up a ton of quality for him?

  24. He is third pair because Winnipeg is a poorly run, and poorly coached team. I first saw Trouba in the WJC, and thought that he was going to become a stud. I have not changed my thinking on him. He is going to be a stud. 6mill will be a bargain soon.

  25. Trouba is a 3rd pair guy in Winnipeg by default. Whether he is going to be a first pair anywhere remains to be seen. But he wants to be paid like one already, that’s my issue with him. And I’d like to see what Skjei can do before trading him away.

  26. Ilb,
While I am sure Trouba wants to get paid, don’t be so sure those are really the numbers he wants. Trouba want out of Winnipeg, so he is asking for numbers he knows Winnipeg won’t touch. He is forcing there hand. Just like Tax Free did to the Rangers.

  27. I also want to see what Skjei can do.. Based on what he has shown so far, he is 7th or 8th d-man at the highest. I hope its just some jitters and inexperience that will go away here soon.

  28. BDL-that’s what media outlets are trying to sell. Either way, he’s getting a bridge deal anywhere he goes, he has 4 years until he’s UFA, and one year until he has arbitration rights. He has no leverage. Winnipeg doesn’t have to trade him. His agent isn’t doing him any favors. If he doesn’t sign by December, he isn’t playing this year, makes no money, and his value goes down.

  29. Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba Shattenkirk Trouba! merry–go–round!

  30. And then what, BDL? If he sits the whole season out, he loses one year of salary, one year of NHL experience, and then he still has to play another year until he has arbitration rights. No leverage.
