The Rangers kept backup goalie Cam Talbot from reaching potential unrestricted free agency on Friday, signing him to a one-year extension.
Talbot will earn $1.45 million on his new deal in 2015-16.
The signing leaves the Rangers with 14 players signed for next season, at a total of about $44.5 million, which does not include free agents-to-be Marc Staal, Derek Stepan, Martin St. Louis, Mats Zuccarello, Carl Hagelin and others.
He is one of two goaltenders in Rangers history to post at least five shutouts in his first 24 career NHL starts (along with Lorne Chabot), and he is one of three Rangers goalies to register at least five shutouts in his first 24 starts with the franchise (along with Chabot and John Ross Roach).
This season he is 2-3-1, 2.34 GAA, .921 with two shutouts.
Henrik Lundqvist will start in goal Saturday in Carolina, and Talbot is likely to get the nod Sunday in the rematch at the Garden, though coach Alain Vigneault would not say so on Friday.
The Rangers also hope to have Derick Brassard back Saturday. Brassard, who missed the last three games with the mumps, skated on his usual line with Rick Nash and Zuccarello upon returning to practice Friday. Brassard said the decision whether to play Saturday would be made after he sees how he feels, but Vigneault said he expects Brassard to play.
Lee Stempniak will miss the game due to mumps.
