From the NYR:

NEW YORK, August 5, 2014 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Darryl Williams to become the team’s assistant coach.

Williams, 46, joins the Rangers organization after spending the last six seasons as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. Williams joins Associate Coach Scott Arniel and Ulf Samuelsson on Head Coach Alain Vigneault’s staff.

Phoenix Coyotes v Vancouver Canucks           Prior to joining the Canucks, Williams served in many coaching capacities. He was the Associate Coach, Video Coordinator, and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the St. John’s Fog Devils of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 2005-06 – 2007-08. St. John’s reached the playoffs in each of the three seasons when Williams was a part of the coaching staff.

Williams has also served as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League (AHL) and as a head coach with the Kansas City Outlaws of the United Hockey League (UHL).

Before joining the coaching ranks, Williams played 11 seasons of professional hockey. He skated in two games with Los Angeles during the 1992-93 season, making his NHL debut on March 2, 1993 vs. Calgary. Williams registered 126 goals and 157 assists for 283 points in 676 career games in the AHL and the International Hockey League (IHL).

Carp, know anything about this guy beyond what’s in his press release? I don’t expect you to, nor would I expect anyone else to know.

Basically, my question is, did AV want this guy last year and wasn’t able to get him from Vancouver, or did he prefer Lacroix?

  2. i didn’t even know what he looked like until I searched for the photos, Doodie. Interesting, to me, that Torts kept him though.

  3. Carp, just wondering if you’re planning some type of ‘thoughts’ piece on the Rangers’ summer. They were hamstrung in many ways but would love your perspective now that the dust has cleared. Enjoy the summer while you can.

  4. He kinda looks like the annoying band guy from the really annoying late night guy’s show.

  5. Doodie Machetto on

Torts should name a dog Sully, after the most loyal companion he’s ever known.

  6. Doodie Machetto on

Just read Leonard’s article on the hire. LaCroix>Williams.

Williams was the video room coach, so this is a promotion for him.

  7. Doodie feverishly working on a response as to why you should be having a terrible summer, irregardless.

  8. Start a where will Del Zotto end up pool?

I am thinking Icelanders or Edmonton.

Some are saying stars but I think they have enough quality prospects on D to pass on him.

You know who is going to be the next revolutionary in the advanced stats community? The person who comes up with the first good advanced stat for goaltenders.

I think that person is going to be Kevin Woodley or someone else from InGoal Magazine.

Speaking of, I always thought it was a waste how EA games rate players between 0-100, but nobody ever gets lower than about 73 or so. That’s a whole lot of wasted numbers.

  11. Del Zaster ends up with flyers with news on timonen being out extended period of time. Just a hunch.

  12. _I always thought it was a waste how EA games rate players between 0-100, but nobody ever gets lower than about 73 or so._

    Socialist hockey at its best.

Nice to see the Blogmeister is back to some hockey talk. I was afraid his new focus was jinxing no-hitters on Twitter.

the most important goalie STATS should be be, save % in the 3rd period, and goals against in the 3rd period.

  15. bull dog line on

Quicks save % in the 3rd period and OT of the finals was 100%, and his goals against was 000.

  16. Doodie Machetto on

bull dog, but it’s not like he had to even be there. They could have tipped over a garbage can and it still wouuld have been 1.000 and .000

  17. Rob in Beantown on

Our goalie had a .938 save percentage in the 3rd period and OT in that series. No wonder we lost!

  18. bull dog line on

our goalie blew a 2 goal lead in game 1. 3 separate 2 goal leads in game 2. he also gave up 4 3rd period goals, and 3 OT goals.

  19. bull dog line on

goalies do not have to be the driving force Doodie. they have to make the big save at the big time. Quick did that in the finals. they also have to lock down 2 goal leads. the one game Quick had a 2 goal lead, he locked it down.

  20. Rob in Beantown on

I’m not sure where you’re getting 4 3rd period goals from. He gave up 2 in game 2 and 1 in game 5.

  21. bull dog line on

sorry 3 3rd period goals. 6 total in the 3rd and OT. I thought the goal the kings scored in game 1 to tie was in the 3rd. it was in the 2nd.
it is 6 more than Quick gave up in the 3rd, and OT.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

Again, I think it has a lot more to do with the team in front of him. If you switched their places, I don’t think the OT games get that far.

  23. bull dog line on

the team in front of Hank gave him a 2 goal lead in game 1, and 3 different 2 goal leads in game 2. i’m sorry, but Hank has to get at least one of those.

  24. Doodie Machetto on

The only game I’ll concede that Lundqvist should have had is Game 2. Should have won that.

But game 1, that game doesn’t even get to OT if Quick was the Rangers’ goaltender. Ditto game 5.

  25. Just curious, bull dog … which goals should he have stopped?

Too general, for me, to say he has to stop one he didn’t.

  26. Eric nailed the del zaster to the flyers… Can’t wait to see him across from us next year

  27. I actually like the idea of using the EA sports rating numbers…just for a simple comparison.

  28. bull dog line on

I could probably name a few he could have stopped, but I wasn’t saying he gave soft goals. my point was he needed to make the big saves in big spots. Quick did, Hank did not.

  29. Del Z to the Flyers!

This after news of 39 yr old Timonen’s legs having serious problems…future playing days in doubt…

  30. “The only game I’ll concede that Lundqvist should have had is Game 2. Should have won that.”

    Should of*

  31. I am enjoying the summer, a few trips to the shore, leaving work early, working on the yard and the house. Perhaps a few hours at the pool, yeah, looking back on the last month and a half hasn’t been bad.

But those are just days and weekends squeezed in between having to work, go into the office, emails… deal with stuff. ugh.

The summer begins this weekend with the flight away from Washington DC to northern California. Wine, relaxing, less than 90 degree heat and humidity, and the phone TURNED OFF!

So, I might not be a bonehead, but I am looking forward to another season of our boys, and I can use the rest before camp begins in September.

A whole season of St. Louis and a rebound season for Nash. A more mature Kreider, McD, Hags and Step, an All-Star addition to the defensive corps, a new contract for Zucc and Brass, and an eastern conference championship banner.

What’s not too look forward to?

  32. Did I not predict del zaster word after timonen news broke. Shocker by flyers. Makes me hate del zaster more.

  33. Bull dog

Anyone could have seen that coming. I didn’t really go out on limb. They save 700 k cap space after timonen goes on Long term IR.

  34. bull dog line on

it sure does ilb. Hank reached a new level for me this year, but that doesn’t change the fact that Quick outplayed him when it mattered most, the 3rd period and OT.

I love this hire! Midnight Oil was my favorite band! Now he’s a ranger! Yippy Zippy Skippy!!

  36. I used to really like MDZ but $2.5m became a lot to pay for an offensive d-man with defensive issues with potential upside when the upside never appeared – we can pay JMoops $1.2m for that role on the team.

  37. I, for one, also love midnight oil and should of had them on my list the other day and totally blew it.

    Terrible omission on my part!
