A new post … just because

Hey kids. Sorry for the lack of posts lately.

I figured you needed a new clean palate for your creative comments. So here it is.

Also, with still about eight weeks or so until training camp, now is a good time for guest blog posts. So if anybody wants to volunteer, please drop me an email at rcarpini@lohud.com. Thanks.

  1. I’m in statto heaven (although i don’t necessarily understand the merits of CORSI), the TOI and zone starts are showing some distinct trends – and comparing Subban against Karlsson,Chara, Weber and McD – you can see how Subban is quite sheltered in his zone starts and Quality of Competition, plus he rarely plays the Penalty Kill (with a name like PK, why?)

  2. Mr. Crowley Mr. Charming Mr. Alarming on

A’s traded Cespedes for John Lester, Johnny Gomes and Brad Marchant

  3. Doodie Machetto on

Actually, if you read my response about Subban and “butts in seats” I said that was more of a factor in small markets.

I think the same could apply to Lundqvist, sure. But again, we are not that small market that needs to find butts in seats.

I happen to be an unabashed Subban fan, so I’m pretty biased.

  4. Rob in Beantown on

It would be interesting to see analysis of the ROI in strictly monetary terms of a contract like Lundqvist’s or Toews’. Does Henrik generate $8.5 per year for MSG just by putting on a jersey? I have no idea.

  5. Rob in Beantown on

Well, I assume he probably generates upwards of $8.5 per year. $8.5M would be a better question.

  6. Manny-O-War, In my opinion on

Phoenix is a small market team and they got superstar and fan favorite Mike Ribeiro and still couldn’t put butts in the seats. I think that will conclude the argument.

  7. _But again, we are not that small market that needs to find butts in seats._

    Montreal is a small market?

  8. Or, even if we are talking about just volume of people in the metro area, they don’t really have a problem getting people to come to games.

  9. Manny-O-War, In my opinion on

I think there are very, very few players that “put butts in seats” and I think one is Crosby and the other is Ovechkin.

  10. Doodie Machetto on

Gravy, like I said before, the argument doesn’t apply to small market teams like Montreal, New York, etc.

  11. Don’t you want guys on your team take make people -stop texting- take butts out of their seats?

  12. Manny-O-War, In my opinion on

So guys that put “feet on the floor” or “towels in the air”?

  13. Rob in Beantown on

After that six hour Cubs-Rockies game I was talking to somebody who said they should just cap regular season baseball games at 10 innings and declare a tie after that. A few years ago I would have been 100% opposed to this, but now I think it’s a good idea. Baseball games are too long even without extra innings. Extra inning regular season baseball games are pretty much just torture. They play 162 games per year, does every game really need a winner that bad?

  14. Rob in Beantown on

Alternative idea: after 10 innings give both teams a point and have a home run derby to decide the real winner.

  15. Mr. Crowley-
“It’s alarming, how charming, it is to be a-farming”- The Who
Are you a farmer, by any chance? : )

  16. Manny-O-War, In my opinion on

I don’t understand why MLB doesn’t just enforce the rules about time in between pitches and/or rules about batters constantly stepping out.

  17. Doodie Machetto on

“Alternative idea: after 10 innings give both teams a point and have a home run derby to decide the real winner.”

  18. It’s not a terrible idea, Rob. At the very least, they need to enforce the rules they have in place with the number of seconds guys can be out of the batter’s box between pitches, etc.

I haven’t watched a full baseball game this year. Part of that is being a Mets fan, but there is more enjoyable things to do during the summer. I still like the charm of going to games, but not at cost.

  19. Doodie Machetto on

They should play the 10th inning without the shortstop on the field to help increase the change of a run being scored.

  20. Rob-
Excellent idea. They should try something like that in the National Hock…oh…wait a minute…

  21. Manny-O-War, In my opinion on

Also, I don’t know that *length* is the problem as much as *pace*

  22. Yeah, if you’re down a run, pull the catcher and put an extra batter in the batter’s box… Wait, that won’t work… I’m so confused!

  23. _Also, I don’t know that length is the problem as much as pace_

    That’s what she said. Hiyo!

  24. Doodie Machetto on

They should play one inning without the shortstop, then one inning without the Center Fielder, then have a homerun contest.

  25. Rob in Beantown on

It just seems silly to play a game in July, one of 162, to its conclusion at 2 am in the morning. Also, it screws up your bullpen and starting rotations for the next few games after. You could *argue* this is an important element of strategy, but I will argue to the contrary that this is stupid. I guess it’s a matter of *opinion*.

  26. Rob in Beantown on

The poor fans who are there can’t even buy a beer to make it tolerable. They have to just sit there and slowly sober up.

  27. Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar. You’re gonna go far. You’re gonna fly high. You’re never gonna die. You’re gonna make it if you try, they’re gonna love you.

  28. Stranger Nation on

    Baseball? Rounders?

how about a man’s sport like Lacrosse, better known as summer hockey, eh

  29. Mr. Pink: Mr. Pink sounds like Mr. . How about if I’m Mr. Purple? That sounds good to me. I’ll be Mr. Purple.

Joe: You’re not Mr. Purple. Some guy on some other job is Mr. Purple. You’re Mr. Pink!

  30. Batters constantly stepping out, re-adjusting gloves, etc., drives me nuts. But if they didn’t, pitchers would just freeze them like a statue. And I saw an on-deck guy the other night who was not only out of the circle, but almost behind the catcher. I think the Minors are tougher on batters stepping out.

  31. Trade Nash now. Trade Staal at deadline. Cap relief.

Brassard is the kind of guy that apparently thrives in the playoffs. $5M isn’t what it used to be, this is what these guys get now. Bargain down the road’d.

  34. WFAN announced that Marlon Byrd was traded to Yankees, then ten minutes later, retracted. Gullible Tweet World.

  35. jpg's sister on

carp and all just want to say hello hope you are having a great summer, now back to writing. later

way back comment, would have liked to have kept bboyle for his faceoff wins, but others tell me thisw team is better.. will see

  36. It’s not better jpg’s sister! Boyle ruled. I guess he still rules. Just for another team.

  37. I’ll miss Boyle’s devil-may-care three musketeers moustache and beard combo. Would have looked great with a puffy shirt

  38. I think in the 10th inning they should remove any one of the outfielders. If not that, maybe they could institute 3 ball walks which would result in more players on base and juicier pitches.

  39. Hand out drugs to the paying customers like at Dead concerts and no one will give a damn how long they play.

  40. I guess that everyone is nervously checking his/her rapidly depleting portfolio.

  41. So nobody is impressed with Zucc’s soccer magic? Goal and two assists! Super *adorable*!

  42. Zucc gets hurt playing soccer and his one-year deal will look a little shortsighted. Still, I enjoyed watching his clips.

  43. Doodie Machetto on

Boy, that MZA goal sure was fair. The in his prime NHL player against the out of shape middle aged woman defender. It was almost as easy as any NHL player breezing past Douglas Murray.

  44. Doodie Machetto on

It reminds me of a time a few years ago, I was playing in a league at Pier 40. I play defense. One night I’m defending this guy who is just crazy in shape, fast as hell, never stops running, etc. Decent enough touch, but nothing special. At one point he turned me pretty good so I fouled the bejesus out of him and got a yellow for my troubles. I helped him up from the ground, and as I did, I thought to myself “man, this guy is a dead ringer for Steve Nash.” I subbed myself out afterwards (unlimited substitutions), and when I got to the sideline, my teammates kinda stared at me, and I was like “what? what else could I have done? By the way, that guy’s a dead ringer for Steve Nash.”

    “That *IS* Steve Nash.”

At least he didn’t score on me. He did score twice while I was on the sideline, once in each half.

  45. Doodie Machetto on

We won that game. Either later that summer or the following summer, I can’t remember which, my team played them again, but I couldn’t make that game. That team loaded up with a couple more ringers in Richie Williams and Brandi Chastain and apparently beat the hell out of my squad.

I’ve seen pictures of their team where Cobi Jones is there too. I guess we lucked out on that front.

  46. Doods, an old girlfriend used to do Yoga with S. Nash in Greenwich. He has back problemos. And, as you noted, he loves soccer and could have played professionally.

  47. Doodie Machetto on

ehhhh, I’m not so sure he could have. He’s very physically fit, but his touch wasn’t impressive.

Aside from the time he beat me purely through him being really fast and me being not fast at all, I contained him pretty well.

And I’m not saying I’m some great player. I got beat plenty that summer.

  48. Doodie Machetto on

We won that game by a wide margin. When Richie Williams and Brandi Chastain were there, it was the opposite result. By a wider margin, if I recall correctly.

Totally unrelated. A friend of mine in college played in a beer league (funny how soccer is men’s league, but hockey is beer league). Bruce Driver was on his team, but the only way they would let him in the league is if he played goaltender. He was still far and away the best goaltender in the league.

  49. Nash is over 40 now and making 10 million a year. Doubt he’s going to go all out and risk injury playing against Monday night jocks at Pier 40.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

It was a bad enough challenge that I wouldn’t have protested if I had received a straight red.

  51. Lord Stanley on the 12th, Greene brings it back to the promise land. I might have to take my cousins kids to this. It’s not everyday a two – 9 year olds squirts, get to see the cup.

If you had the Cup for a Day, what would you do?

  52. Rob in Beantown on

Crosby earned the shutout and supposedly the other team didn’t even know who he was until after the game.

  53. I really like that pic at the head of the post. Anyone have a 1080p version of it?

  54. Thanks, Rob. Pretty cool of Cindy.

Doodie, good for you, it’s your house, ain’t nobody coming in.

    Coos, Steve McQueen?

  55. The spinning backhand pass by Zucc on the Carcillo goal that opened the scoring. Wow. Just wow.

  56. Rangers West on

THE has been traded! Rangers traded THE and No Gomez for Crosby, Malkin and the Penguins’ next 15 1st round picks.

    Fire Sather! We were robbed!

  57. Rangers West on

There are many reasons you are brilliant, but drugs to make baseball enjoyable is magnificent! How did I never think of this?

  58. Ranger West – You just have to start out with beer and cigars – the gateway drugs. :)

  59. Boring “no hockey new” days suck!

Although apparently Les Habs have offered an 8yr $60m+ deal to some girl called Sue Bann (or it could have been a North Korean hockey player called Soo Ban – i didnt hear it very well)?

  60. Doodie Machetto on

Subban arbitration apparently moving forward this morning. They will still have 48 hours to settle before the arbitrator issues his award.

Absolutely insane Montreal has let it come to this.

  61. Is there any truth in the rumours that THE Kreider was spotted with Marc Bergevin at NHL HQ wearing a “Where’d he go? Where’d WHO go?” t-shirt for the arbitration hearing?

  62. Doodie Machetto on

Ugh, the first of the month on a Friday is the worst. The boss comes in just to make sure all the bills can be sent out today rather than wait until Monday. Brutal full day of work instead of cutting out at 4.

  63. Coos, re: Pascals Wager. Very interesting perspective. Thanks.

I learn so much here, really.

  64. Doodie Machetto on

    D.K. Sioux Ban.

And before someone tries to imply something racial, I’m referring to Danny Kristo.

  65. Screw that, Doodie. It’s Friday Fun Day. Leave at four, tell your boss, Carp, said it’s okay.

  66. Maybe the first definitive probability theorist, Seee. A cardcounter of the soul. Wish he were around today to give me some more salvation theories (and football games.) :)

Regarding baseball on drugs: Dock Ellis supposedly tossed a no-hitter while on acid. I always thought that was neat.

  68. Moshe Dayan, asked how he won the Six Day War, replied, “I sent all our doctors and lawyers to the front lines, and can those bast..ds charge!”

  69. Pascal’s Wager can be used to promote anything you like. You can use it to show why Sather should be be fired. Or to show why he should be retained. Handy device.

  70. Wow! I didn’t know that the PGA does drug tests.

Paulina probably needs some “professional help” as well…

  71. Yeah, real wars have years in their name

    The Seven Years War

    The Hundred Years War

    The Thirty Years War

It’s the modern era. Nobody has the attention span to fight a really good decades long war anymore. I blame Iphone.

  72. More classicly one would employ Pascal’s Wager to prove Sather is God. Or that golf is The Word.

  73. “I’m just out here, working hard, every single day, just trying to be the best teammate I can be”

  78. Rob in Beantown on

Habs wanted $7.2M, PK wanted $8M. We’ll settle at $9M.

McDonagh for 6 years at $4.7M is my favorite contract ever.

  79. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

$9M for PK Subban is absolutely insane at this stage of the game. In a few years I think it will look a LOT more normal. But right now that is absolute insanity. Not Virtual insanity like Jamiroquai. Literal insanity.

  81. Bergevin, instead of the 2013 Bridge, could have locked this guy up for 6 years, 36-39 mil. He should be fired.

  82. I don’t get it. Subban wanted 8.5, team offered 5.5. Arbitrator could decide anywhere in the middle. Granted, it would be one year, but he wouldn’t sign for 8 or 8.5 for 8 years? Gots to be something in this contract we haven’t heard about.

  83. @renlavoietva: PK Subban contract breakdown: 2014-15 $7M, 15-16 $7M, 16-17 $11M, 17-18 $11M, 18-19 $10M , 19-20 $10M, 20-21 $8M, 21-22 $8M. #tvasports

  84. Thank the gods that McD learned to play some quality defense before expanding his game to the O zone. The future, I fear, will be filled with slap-happy, pinching Dmen who will never learn the other 100 feet of the game.

  85. LMGO @ Mayo Clinic, coos!
How many kids has Falk produced while sitting on the bench. No wonder he refused conditioning assignment to the AHL.

    Good evening, boneheads!

  86. PK Subban is the perfect example of when and who you dont want to play the ‘bridge contract’ game with. Coos said it, could of had him for 25 million less if they signed him two summers ago.

Somethings fishy with it though. If your montreal and you were willing to sign him at an AVV of 9million why did they go through that dreaded arbitration hearing

Just a gut feeling, but i think after the hearing montreal started to fear that the process and Subbans comments afterward, were pointing to him playing it out to free agency and boom a day later they give him the keys to the kingdom.

If you think about it, had Montreal played their hand right….

they could have had Subban/Mac for the next 5 years @ appr. 12mil a year combined. They are paying Subban 9mil per starting this season.

  87. It’s not that simple, folks. Subban’s AAV over the span of his 2 contracts ( 10 years)is $7.75M, he will have made $77.5M. Assuming they signed him to a 6 year deal for $39M two years ago, they’d still have to extend him to another contract at 29 year of age. Another 4 years would still cost them $32-$34M. So by the end of 10 years he would make, perhaps, $5-$7M less, except they had him for $2.875M for two years ( 2012-13, 2013-14) when the cap was at his lowest.

Great player, btw, but I think $9M is too high.

  88. great line from Uncle Larry
    in regards to Staal’s contract
    that Rangers fans say
year after year about other players

“Why on earth does everything take so long with the Rangers?”

  89. Stranger Nation on

Staal, yes – big injury risk, declining performance, would leave a hole but need to get another 2nd pair Dman and JMoore is not the answer right now

Hags, no – very unique skill set, in a offensive possession league, he is a keeper. Put another grinder RW and a two way center with him and they would be in Ozone most of their shifts.

  90. Stranger Nation on

August hatties are too easy, which is probably the reason I should have.

    All that you dream..

  91. I’m not trading Hagelin. I would lock up Staal. He’s very tradeable so the contract he gets won’t scare me.

  92. “iWicky

-Do you think it is the Shin Bet site?

  93. bull dog line on

I go back and forth on Staal. I think he is very overrated by many. by that I mean those who feel he is a star. Staal is a solid Dman, reliable. but he is not overly physical, nor offensive. right now I lean towards signing him, but if there was a very good pkg offered for him, I would not be against trading him.

  94. Bull dog
I agree re Staal. I think he is overrated also. He isn’t terrible by any stretch, but too soft for his size and too (way too) injury prone.

  102. I do too, coos … the kid from Northern Ireland might be a good one …

feel bad for USA’s Ryder Cup team. Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker, Phil. Ugh.

  103. C: Eldrick Woods was asked a few years ago if he would be happier playing in Mount Juliet in Ireland, with a winning purse of one million Pounds or competing that week in the Ryder Cup, and he answered: “Ireland, for a million reasons.” I wonder if he gets an appearance honorarium surreptitiously, as has been rumored. Unlikely, I guess, but it’s been done before. :)
