Could the Rangers be down a couple of assistant coaches?

Tonight would have been Game 7 … just sayin’.

We all know that Rangers assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson is seen as a favorite — but not a done deal — to become the Carolina Hurricanes head coach under his former Hartford/Pittsburgh teammate and close friend, new Canes GM Ron Francis. Pittsburgh’s new GM Jim Rutherford has also asked permission to speak with Samuelsson, according to reports, after the Penguins fired Dan Bylsma because he couldn’t beat the Rangers in the playoffs.

The Canes are reportedly still getting permission to speak to other candidates as well.

Now it appears that Scott Arniel, another of Alain Vigneault’s assistants, could be on the move, too. Reports last night were that Vancouver has asked permission to interview Arniel for the head coaching job previously held by John Tortorella, and previously held by Vigneault.

That’s all I’ve got today. … unless there’s news on the buyout front.

We’re going to be doing some guest posts as the summer goes on. I will ask later on for specific times, but if any of you  ever has something you’d like to volunteer to write, don’t hesitate. Drop me an email at

  1. Good morning, boneheads!

Yeah, rub it in, Carp. With game 7. :-)

If other teams think our assistant coaches are good enough to become head coches, by all means. It’s all part of having a successful postseason.

I can do some guest posts this summer, Carp. I did a couple last August, I’m pretty sure. But it’s usually some boring stuff, related to CBA or salary Cap.

  2. Carp

Count me in for guest write up. Will be my first. I am telling you know I am requesting the title if my article the lowlights of one rick Nash ranger career. Promise to keep it clean

  3. bull dog line on

looks like eric found something new to say over, and over, and over again. good for you eric, you are growing.

  4. Eric, I imagine your post will also predict the Rangers trading Lundqvist and McDonagh to Fishsticks for Nabokov and future consideration and never making playoffs again in your lifetime. :-)

  5. London Broil on

this one is going to ake a couple decades at least to get over. a couple decades i dont have. this was our best shot to win. to have game 2 stolen away from us by the referees makes my blood boil.

  6. Zev the welder on

I know a lot of the focus this summer will be on striking deals, or not with Brassard, Pouliot, Boyle and Stralman. My question is will we be bringing in a top center, after Richards buyout?

  7. It’s just so damn hard every year for them make playoffs. One of these years puck won’t bounce there way in final week of season.. How bout we clinch maybe two weeks before.

What’s more likely miss playoffs by a point or two or deep playoff run next year.

You would have to say miss playoffs know because if fact it seems come down game 81 or 82 every year

  8. London Broil on

eric, people all over twitter are saying next yr is the yr. it’s more likely we miss the playoffs than get back to the conf finals let alone the finals.

  9. What is all this “Richards taking this buyout talk like a pro” garbage…does the buyout give him 7 weeks severance and COBRA…or millions of unearned $(ok…even his TY $’s were unearned) and an opportunity to play in less scrutinized environment? Believe me..his bruised ego will be laughing all the way to the bank.

  10. Exactly, rjhw! Richards has 6 years and $27M left on his contract. Out of $27M, $8M are due to be paid in bonuses over the next 3 years. It’s quite possible that these bonuses have to be paid in full, and not be included in his buyout number. That what happened to Vincent Lecavalier when he was bought out by Tampa. If that’s the case, Richards gets $53M out of his $60M contract. If not, then he gets miserly $51M out of $60M.

  11. Secondary depression has set in. The one that follows after the initial pain lifts. Nothing severe, just a heavy sense of what mighta been.

  12. London Broil on

ilb, i read you got a yacht… when do i get a ride on it & does it come stocked with ladies? ;)

  13. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

    On Richards:

I hated him as much as everyone else. So glad he was not permanently injured playing deep this year.

That said, there has to be something to the guy with his game 7 record and the fact we played 9 series in 3 years. No, it’s not all him. But he was one of the leaders.

He’s slow, he’s a backstabber, he was unprepared for last year (something I will never forgive him for), he rarely plays ‘d’, needs to be rested (can’t play a full season plus the PO’s anymore) but he does win.

He’ll make his ridiculous payday and move one to a team that is so deep as to only need a planted tree that can shoot on net 70% of the time with a slap shot, fore check a tiny bit, and be a locker room quasi-leader.

  14. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

For the same reason Sather kept Richards this year (his monstrous ego), I am convinced Nash will play here next year. No way he admits he made a mistake of huge proportion. Just no way.

  15. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

Carp or anyone, do you have an idea who the compliance buyouts will be this year. Are any of them not ‘damaged goods’? Could any of them be good, relatively inexpensive pickups that would fit our needs?

  16. *Guy Boucher:* He will replace Ulf Samuelsson’s rugged good looks. He also brings a nice scar to the table which strikes fear in the opponent.

*Tony Granato:* Has a sweet mobster name and was responsible for a very, very successful PP in Pittsburgh.

    Problem *SOLVED*

  17. Stranger Nation on

The team proved you can get to the Stanley Cup finals with three #2 centers so I would be hesitant to over pay for a supposed #1. Stastny would be our default #1, but is he a true #1 or are we paying inflated UFA #1 center money for a #2A.

Right now we have 6 centers prior to any moves
    2A (Step)
    2A (Bros)
    2C (Richards)
    3B (Moops)
    3B (Boyle)
    3C (Miller)

Obviously getting rid of Richard$, leaves the Boyle and/or Moore decision
AV likes Boyle at 4LW which will not work for BB so he is gone most likely
Miller should be given the chance at 3C or can slot to forward
    sign D Moops
Step, Bros, Miller, Moore can work
Step has to have a better year and Miller has to prove he can play a full season

  18. Perhaps I could do a blog comparing the pros and cons of Paulina Gretzky, Janet Jones, the Larionov daughters, 28 year old girls from northern NJ, etc.

  19. Hey Gaborik, care to carry the Cup around NYC like you did that Christmas tree a few years ago, for old times sake?

  20. I’m on S3E8, Manny.

Daenerys Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, called Daenerys Stormborn, the Unburnt, the Mother of Dragons, is really working on her *power* *play* a lot lately.

  21. Funny, I don’t remember Gaborik being on Twitter while with the Rangers. Now you can’t get rid of him.
Any truth to the rumor that O’Halloran was the Guest of Honor at the Kings’ parade?
Agree with London Broil…this one is not going to be easy to get over.

  22. Thats gonna be tough to handle, Manny, while watching with the old lady.

Maybe I should stream season 4 *in* *private* and then pretend I never saw it.

  23. Richards gets $51M to say goodbye…he should also be given the

” I was one of the leaders in the lockeroom…but forgot I also had to play?” t-shirt as a parting gift!

  24. Should Boyle, Moore etc not re-sign? Umberger, anyone? If CBJ eats some of his bloated contract?

  25. He is fun to root for, but I agree. I would rather see youth get the job, with faster legs.

  26. I’ve never been a fan of Umberger, maybe it’s just the distaste for the Flyers retreds.

  27. Boyler will be gone.

DMoore will get a contract, he wants to stay a Ranger. My guess is he will sign what Sather offers him.

  28. As for draft picks, I think the Rangers have their 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks.

They have Florida’s 5th (for Casey Wellman), but dealt their 5th to San Jose as part of the Ryane Clowe deal.

Rangers should have had Columbus’ 6th round pick (Marian Gaborik deal), but it got dealt to Minnesota in the Justin Falk deal.

Not sure if the Rangers have their 7th. It was a conditional pick going to LA for Carcillo, but I can’t find out what the condition is (insert your own Stanley Cup/referee joke).

  29. We need a 1’st line Center, and someone to QB the power play if McD can’t do it. I think he has the skills.

  30. I would love umberger on cheap if Columbus can’t trade him at 4.5 and elects to buy him out.

  31. Getting close to that time of day when we should start finding out if anyone is being put on waivers/bought out.

  32. They’re after all our coaches? Does that mean that we’re considered huge overachievers for our talent base, and that we’re really a little Subaru Forester driven by super-coaching to outrun Ferraris? Just axin’.

  33. I think we have 4 draft picks starting at #59 (last but one pick 2nd round).
Unless there are some rights traded (i don’t see much of that happening this year as teams can contact impending UFA’s from next week) we will have a very small new group of Rangers this year unless there are some undrafted guys the scouting team have their eyes on?

  34. Captain brad Richards come get the Stanley cup. If that happens I will gladly,I’ve with 5.6 cap hit of dead space in the last three years of his deal should be retire

  35. Stepan and St. Louis bday today. I hope they enjoy it. Hope Nash bday the other day was miserable.

  36. Doodie

Likely the delay on the buyout is the franchise showing respect to Richards by making it seem the decision is truly a difficult one?

  37. I would like to say don’t panic, but we all expected him to be bought out last year and couldnt believe Slats took the risk of him getting injured!
Please none of that this year Slats, just pay him some Dolan $$ and refrain from making any wild UFA splashes to replace him.

  38. UK – Rangers might get lucky and get another Duclair in the draft. He was a good find in the 3rd round.

He looks ready for the AHL, if he’s old enough. Don’t forget about the Russian Buchnevich he is AHL ready after watching him play for team Russia in the world juniors. Haggerty was a goal scorer coming out of college.

Miller & Fast will get more ice time. Kristo & Lindberg might get a look.

I’m thinking there is a good group of youth to choose from. That could skate for a spot in the fall.

  39. I hope this will be my last Richards post. This guy has an exaggerated opinion of himself. His legs have been totally gone for 2 seasons running. He dissed Cally and anointed himself ‘unofficial Captain (with the help of a fawning Press.) He helped get Torts tossed. He plays half-court, is personally boring, and I can’t imagine in my wildest imagination him leading a room.

  40. Wonder if a few of our kids know what a grand opportunity they have if they can grab it. Slats would do a jig if a couple few of them could play well at this level for under a mil a year. Wake up, Miller!

  41. Rangers could have 4 to choose from out of camp. Anderson from Sweden, Skapski was a top player for his country, Skjei & McIlrath are both 1’st round picks, that are getting closer.

  42. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t know enough about Anderson or Skapski to say anything about them, but McIlrath is never going to make it, and Skjei is at least two years out.

  43. Greetings ‘heads!

Worst part about no game 6 & 7? I got laid off on Monday & now have all the time in the world to stay up late to watch hockey, sleep off hangovers, & go to hockey parades.

A big Buyfuglien U to the Refs & my old boss.

    LGR!! 2014-15

    Sire Father!!

  44. bull dog line on

you can go after Richards about his play all you want, but you can’t really go after his leadership. he was a huge upgrade over Cally there. cally had one foot out the door to Buffalo. that is no way to lead. Cally did not understand what it meant to be the captain of the New York Rangers. Richards did. the teams play on the ice tells you all you need to know about how much they missed Cally’s leadership.

  45. I think those on the bubble this year will be:
D’s – Andersson, Skjei, McIlrath, Allen
F’s – Lindberg, Fast, Miller, Haggerty, Kristo

It looks like Buchnevich will be in Russia for at least another year

  46. I forgot about Allen, he was close last year. But they gave him full time minutes in Hartford for development, over limited minutes as the 7th D.

So he is probably in the lead for D, it looks like Skjei is staying in school for one more year.

  47. I only have *AFTER PICS* for The 5th Sometimes-Annual, 2013-2014, Paul Mara Playoff Beard Contest from about 30% of the entries.

    Come on people. Compete.

  48. This franchise has had success with Richards on it under two different coaches…it has to count for something…of course, w/o Hank this team never makes it anywhere near that success, but still.

  49. Richie hollering in locker room: “Come on guys, let’s pick it up, play 200 feet! Some of you guys are floating. We have to control the neutral zone and forecheck, not just do figure eights in front of their net. Pick up your man away from the puck! Finish your checks. When your shift is ending, hustle to the bench so that while the opposition is developing three-on-twos, your replacement isn’t left hanging there waiting to get over the boards. Suck it up and take a hit to make the play!”

  50. Sioux

What did I tell you about kristo. He isn’t to be mentioned again until he plays a game. Deal or no deal lol. Your killing me

  51. The Kristo horse has been beaten, tarred, feathered, flogged, flayed, burned, and mashed.

  52. It looks like the 2nd/3rd pair right-side D and 7th d-man spots will be up for grabs. I think Allen is a lefty whereas McIlrath, Diaz (if they bring him back) and Andersson are righties.

  53. Once Stralman didn’t sign that extension offer it was on McIlrath right then and there to step up and ensure he does everything possible to stay here next year.

Golden opportunity. The guy should plainly see how much his style is needed on this team.

  54. Booby – here hoping he skates with “Underhill” all summer. If he can’t, he will hurting to play in the NHL.

It would be nice to see him get a shot at the 3rd pair.

  55. Spezza doesn’t want to play for Canadian team? The Canadian guy? Can’t wait to hear what Don Cherry has to say about it. Could be better than any stand up comedy.

  56. Duclair still has another season in juniors before eligible for AHL, Skapski is a goalie and is in same position as Duclair, Skjei should almost definitely stay in school, he needs to fill out and will have a bigger role. Buchnevich has another year on his contract in Russia and has indicated he wants to play it out. Tambellini could make the jump to Hartford as he was not drafted out of juniors but that would probably be a mistake. The guy falling under the radar is Nieves, he hasn’t gotten the hype of Thekreider but he’s on a similar development path – 29 points as a freshman at U Mich, most of them in the second half of the season.

All these hockey gurus who have declared the Rangers feeder system dead are guys who pay attention to Canadian juniors almost exclusively. CHL hasn’t been a major drafting well for the Rangers for 4 or 5 years.

  57. Let me clarify it: he has an NMC, so they can’t waive him. But, as per CBA, before he is bought out, the team needs to ask him whether he wants to be placed on waivers. If he says yes ( in case he thinks simeone might pick hi up), then they do and wait for 24 hours, If he doesn’t want to be waived, he can be bought out immediately

  58. Carp, can you please, please remove Gaborik from your twitter feed here. We don’t need to hear about his adventures with the Stanley Cup! UGHHHHHH!

  59. The only reasons I can think of for not buying him out immediately:

    1) Like Carp said, they’re trying to delay any chance he goes to a division rival

    2) They are exploring trade scenarios

    3) They (Sather) are debating *not* buying him out

  60. If Sather is debating *NOT* buying him out then he thinks buying him out is the *drastic* move when, in reality, *keeping him* would be the drastic move.

  61. Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get rid of Prust and Gaborik?? Take them of the widget! If I want to read what they’re tweeting about I know how to find their accounts…

It’s like stocking old girlfriend that one never got over…it’s embarrassing.

  62. Gravy- he isn’t tradeable. Even if Sather finds someone who’s in drug rehab, it’s a suicide because even if he is traded, the Rangers are still on the hook for complaince buy out. It will be $13M instead of $17M, but still.

*I AM NOT* talking about #3 at all!

  63. Doodie Machetto on

ilb, your knowledge of the CBA is second to none, possibly other than the guy that runs CapGeek.

  64. Agree, ilb. Just trying to rationalize why they haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I mean, maybe they want to know what the cap is going to be, but that would only be necessary if they were thinking of keeping him.

  65. Doodie Machetto on

#3 is happening. I assure you, it is very real and happening.

I don’t understand how more of you are not panicking.

  66. I promise this: if he isn’t bought out ( I just had a frontal lobe spasm while typing it), I will start every single entry on the blog with *FIRE SATHER* for as long as he is still our GM.

  67. It has to be part of the “honor Richie” farewell salute. Make him think that they are actually considering keeping him, precluding #19’s usual recriminations on how he was mishandled.

  68. I’m not 100% up on this soccer business, but it seems that a #62 being tied at this stage of the match with a #15 that just beat the #1 is something of an upset.

  69. Doodie Machetto on

I love how Snow trades for players to get a long time to try and sign them, so it can be publicly shown how they don’t want to sign with that terrible franchise.

  70. I think Carp should host a “should have been a Game 7 game day Charp”

I know it’s hump day because the rangers are the ones that got humped

  71. Doodie Machetto on

Those ranks should be taken with a very heavy grain of salt.

Yes, Australia has given the Dutch far more trouble than they should have, but they are definitely better than #62.

  72. I think Richards not making himself available on media / break up day is a telltale sign they are buying him out…just my gut, but they told him that day and are just waiting out of respect but what the heck do i know

  73. Carp, any season ending chat scheduled?

Carp or Boneheads any possibility Rangers trade Staal for a scorer. Because he is signed for 1 more year plus eye problem might make him less interesting for suitors? Heard somebody raise possible trade for him last night on the radio. He is probably as good as he will ever be and will want big money after next year.

  74. Any chance Leetch would be an alternate assistant coach for NYR? I read that he would have been part of Messier’s staff.

Speaking of Mess, I wonder if Messier would want to be an alternate assistant coach. I mean, if he’s so interested in coaching, that’s a place to start.

  75. When Richards is gone, I’ll be happy, but I’ll be grateful for the big goals/plays in his short time.

The goal against Washington in Game 5 instantly comes to mind. Also setting up Gaborik for the GWG in 3OT in Game Tree. He also had a few big goals this year. Game 7 against Pens.

Can’t say the same for The Good One.

    Richard’s NYR Career > Nash’s NYR Career

  76. Each Kings player pockets about 100 grand before taxes for winning Cup. Rangers about 60 pre-tax. Two years ago, it was 50 and 27. Nice little set up these owners have going for themselves.

  77. Coos – 60K for the players vs 60M for the owner?

When you add EVERYTHING up. Right?

  78. Leetchhalloffame on

Yes, please get rid of news of Gaborik taking a bath in the Pacific with the SC. Who gives a rat’s a$$? Hope he drowns.

  79. ORR is right. That goal against the Caps was *MAGIC*

I will never forget John Mitchell or Brad Richards.

  80. Stranger Nation on

    _Richard’s NYR Career > Nash’s NYR Career_

Rather…Richard’s NYR PO Career > Nash’s NYR PO Career

In reg season, Nash is/was better, especially if you take away Mr Ed’s PP stats

  81. bull dog line on

also the play’s Richards made along the boards to set up St. Louis OT winner in game 4 against the Habs. no doubt he has to go, but it wasn’t all bad.

  82. Stranger Nation on

Now that Richards is (almost) gone, can we play Hags with someone that can keep up with him. he was soooo good in post season.

  83. Not sure on the ASST. Coaches.

I don’t think Leetch would want a FULL TIME JOB at this point. Messier won’t be the Asst. position, is’t he helping out in Edmonton?

Buek should get a look, Patrick already has the experience.

Now for the Power Play Coach…. ????? I’d hire the Pittsburgh guy, he’s still looking for a team. Right?

  84. Doodie Machetto on

I’ve repeatedly said it about Richards: when he has the puck on his stick in the offensive zone, he’s still a valuable player. It’s just that at all other times he isn’t.

  85. Thorton only wants to go to the Rangers?

So there goes the next 1’st round pick? and Miller????

  86. I’d say they could sign Adam Hall and Adam Oates as assistants, but I can’t go for that. No can do.

  87. Thornton only has 3 years left, so it’s not a HUGE risk. But to spend all of Richard’s money on 1 guy, doesn’t help in bring back the RFA on this team.

  88. Richards DOES NOT compete neutral zone or D zone and skates like a pachyderm. How many games do you have to watch to not know that?

  89. I wonder if signing a #1 center to play with Nash would rub Step the wrong way. Can’t blame him for The Good One’s lack of production, and because of it, *he* might lose ice time. If that were me, I’d start considering other options.

  90. I’m ok with Step being a solid #2 Center, if Spezza or Thornton become a Ranger.

Not going to lie I’ve wanted Kreider – Step – The Kid as a line since they’ve won a gold medal playing together.

  91. ORR!! – Same thing happened to Prucha on the PP when Shanny was signed. I’m sure PRU-HA would much rather have stayed on PP1 or PP2 than having his name become a euphemism for being a healthy scratch among Boneheads.

  92. Coos – he didn’t leave Toronto or Montreal off the list, he just believes Ottawa won’t trade him to the arch rival.

  93. Czechthemout!!! on

Richards will not be bought out. That decision was made when MSL was aquired. He will also be named the Captain before opening night.

Staal will not be traded up to and until the deadline when he and the Rangers cant agree on a long term deal. This time though, we dont have any other draft picks in the first round until 2016 so Sather may look to get one and a good prospect for Staal. Stupid move if you ask me but that is what will happen.

Stralman will leave. Boyle is 50-50 on leaving and D Moore will resign.
Poo Poo will be resigned too.

Sather will add his custumary goon to replace Carcillo and pick up a scrap heap dman to replace Falk and Diaz.

They may try Haggarty and Allen in there to add some new blood, and also JT Miller may finally get a lonng look. But for the most part, not much will change from the finals team. Sather is under the impression that this team can win the Cup with the same team basically. I dont agree at all! But that is what I feel will happen. So get ready for a very sleepy off season.

  94. Doodie Machetto on

“Richards will not be bought out. That decision was made when MSL was aquired. He will also be named the Captain before opening night.”

Agree. Been saying it since they made the deal. Don’t know why people have just assumed Richards is being bought out.

  95. Doodie Machetto on

Sioux, he actually did name them on the list. 10 team list: 6 Canadian teams, Preds, Isles, CBJs, and Panthers.

  96. The only way Richards doesn’t get bought out is if Sather knows he can deal him in a year or two to some team that needs to inflate their salary to hit the floor of the cap…been done before…

  97. Carp ripping his hair out about people here still not understanding Richie’s oerwhelming team-busting financial liabilities.

  98. Stranger Nation on

ORR!! What Is It Good For!!??
_Honestly, Richards and Nash are pretty even, as far as regular season numbers, in my opinion_

need to look at # of games played and 5v5 production to measure how even you think they are, presuming you dont mind your center not playing defense

  99. Cooscoos – I agree 100% with Carp and everyone else who knows Richards needs to be bought out…prust saying that if he isn’t, what possible reason could there be?

  100. Stranger Nation on

If Richards was NOT being bought out, he would have been at break up day. He will never miss a chance to get in front of a mic.
Maybe there was a bustle in his hedgerow out east in SouthHampton that kept him away.

  101. No, Buster … it’s black and white: Buy him out by June 30, or stuck with a $6.67M cap hit each of the next three years, then $5.67M per for the following three when he’s retired.

Please people, please, you’re killing me.

  102. Since it’s his Birthday!

    Happy 26th to Danny Kristo!!!

It doesn’t sound as good when he’s only 24 :)

  103. Carp – I agree and am on your side on this one. 100%.

Just wondering, if he doesn’t buy him out, what possible reason could Sather give?

  104. Good afternoon all! Coming out of hibernation now that the fog of depression has lifted…and what a great opening line for me to return and catch up….thanks Carp!!

This time of year makes me almost as thirsty as playoffs . Sigh, I miss playoffs…..

  105. His reason would be: I don’t give a flying crap about the future of the organization, about re-signing any of my free agents, or about the salary cap in 2017-18, 18-19 and 19-20, because we’re going to be so screwed and I can just retire and hang out with Brad in PEI or Banff.

    Other than that. ???

  106. Czechthemout!!! on

I totally get the financials and why Richards needs to be bought out. I just dont think he is going to be. I also think he needs to go from a hockey perspective. He cant skate well enough anymore for this team and AV’s system. The finals proved it. And he is not getting younger.

  107. Doodie Machetto on

    Carp, basically, yes.

It’s Glen Sather. You can’t picture him saying that?

  108. No because Gorton, Schoenfeld and every other person in the building will tie and gag him and lock him in a closet …

  109. Stranger, I’m talking offense, which is what those two guys are known and were signed/traded for.

The thing with Prucha. Shanny is a HOF and was coming off a 40 goal season. Prucha ended up being a total fluke.

Step has much more potential. He’s probably going to have to take a backseat to a guy like Stastny, Spezza, Thornton, and it might not sit well with him. Like I said, who ever they sign is playing top line with The Good One. Step is not the reason why his numbers suck.

  110. Doodie Machetto on

To those suggesting a trade, that will not help us as well. We would still be on the hook for recapture should he retire early, just less so.

  111. Game 7 day today, also Kristo, Stepan, & MSL’ 26th today.

That has to be a Ranger record for birthdays. 3 on the same day.

  112. Manny
    I’m all done with it

I hear you bought a large aasen boat?! ;)

I don’t like any of your hypothetical roster move/not moves folks…no size upgrades what so ever!!

  113. US Patent Office declares Redskins’ trademark invalid. Meaning, every pizza shop around the USA can call themselves Washington Redskins Pizza Emporium and every skell in a basement in Red Hook and Newark can make Redskin tee shirts and caps with immunity. Makes sense to me.

  114. Doodie Machetto on

skell. That word is not used nearly enough. I just had one friend who ever used it. Used to work in a liquor store and would have a “skell of the day”

  115. Sioux

U still mentioning kristo. If and when he makes his ranger debut your flying in sit right next to me

  116. I found it interesting when Sather suggested (during SCF press day) that the cap-recapture penalty was something Bettman added to the CBA after all negotiations were completed…

I think he is well aware of the penalty but make no mistake that he would keep Richards if it wasn’t for that recapture penalty.

Rangers fans should be thanking Mr. Bettman!!

Would LOVE to have Thorton here for two or three years. The guy still produces. Would still trade Nash and use Marty as his RW with THE on the Left.

staal + nash for buff + Kane
    richards for thorton

May spell the end of Bros-hard though

    THE – Thorton – Marty
    Zucc – Step – Kane
    Hags – Miller – Pullout
    UFA – Moops – Dorsett

both Willie Mitchell, and Matt Greene are UFA’s. LA wants to keep Mitchell. Greene would be perfect for the Rangers.

  125. How do I get that to you, Sioux? Suppose you can get it from Carp. I’d be happy to give it to you.

  126. The Hall and Oates was a dandy but I think you flew too close to the sun with that one, Gravy.

  127. Also good, Coos.

I love Hall & Oates actually. So you guys can keep doing this all day.

  128. Met Hall a number of times with Tommy Motolla in a saloon owned by a friend of mine, Motolla’s cousin. Hall had his blondie hair all piled up inside a baseball cap, stayed anonymous, and none of the girls paid him any attention until way later when they found out who he was. Goes to show, regular guys get no attention from the ladies until they find out they are rich and famous.

  129. Mannu should have it, Sioux. I hereby authorize him to release it (to YOU). Would be mildly dismayed for Lloyd or Comnsnse, et al to get hold of it. :))

  130. Hey *COOS* Darryl Hall’s brother is an Attorney in Stonington, CT.

    More CT stuff.

  131. You’re the social director, Manny. Let’s face it. You are the straw that stirs the drink.

  138. @ Pi…un,
there are a lot of Russian speaking, including kids, reading this blog. Please, try not to use it casually, if you understand what I mean…(unless you’re CCCP)

  139. From the Ottawa Sun:

“The asking price for the Senators is pretty simple: A top end player who can play on the club’s first two lines, a highly-ranked prospect and a No. 1 pick in the June 27 NHL entry draft.”

    Nash, Miller, and …

Do we have any picks left?

  140. Just joking, by the way. I don’t think for a second Nash wants to play in Ottawa. He holds all the cards.

  141. Can’t imagine us making a good deal for Kane without giving up Stepan or Kreider…or both

  142. Cccp
I wasn’t suggesting either ine if those moves at all.

You posted “Avery” which I assumed u were doing to generate a bit of “discussion” during a slow blog time…I then put up my post as a “try this” to generate discussion suggestions

Not any way shape or form meaning the subject of that post being something I was suggesting doing.

  143. Za'rat (TheOtherGuysGreed) Jones on

So do we get Ryan Callahan back?
    He was cute.

I like the team with Brad Richards for 82 games. He’s good, but in the playoffs he hasn’t been able to be successful.

But Rick Nash hasn’t done it either.

Martin St Louis played well, I thought.

    Kreider rocks!

I guess no POZYs until opening night?

  144. I’d still sign Tootoo if Boyle re-signs. I’m thinking as a replacement for Carcillo, if they don’t re-sign him. Not a guy that’s going to play every game. Put him in here and there.

I’d like to have Carcillo back. For someone everyone here hated, he scored some memorable goals for NYR in his short time here. The goal in the Stadium Series against the Isles, the two in the playoffs, both huge goals.

  145. I always disliked Carcillo but grew to like him a lot as Ranger!

He did score some really big goals! And, the guy can actually play hockey. I have no problem with him coming back. He was a contributor.

My guess is that AV does not want him back though…

  146. One name that I think makes sense is Mason Raymond. Not that I like the guy that much over Boyle or Tootoo, but he has played for AV and can score 10-15 goals.

  147. I will say this about tootoo, he seems like a harder hitter than carcillo or dorsett. Probably because if his short frame and heavier weight.

  148. Yeah, Tootoo hits hard. His problem early was that he was a cheapshot artist, but I think he’s got his act together. He’s had some off ice trouble with drugs and/or booze. I imagine his brothers suicide had a lot to do with that.

I remember him kicking the shyte out of Avery in 2012. Busted him up pretty good!

    Just a cheap option.

I haven’t seen much of Raymond, but I heard he’s an OvechCANT type player. All offense, no defense.

  149. Orr
    Agree re tootoo

No way to Raymond he’s a hagelin speed clone without the defensive game…smallish player…10 ft pole

  150. Rangers West on

    Insomnia Question:

I have seen Fast and Miller play and think they both have the potential to be decent NHL’ers but don’t know if they will be.

So what is the likelihood that three of the following youngn’s make the team to form a kid line (And not we have nobody to put on the ice so here it goes kid line…but a good youthful line that earns ice time):

Fast, Haggerty, Kristo, Lindberg and Miller.

It would be great to see at least two of these guys earn a spot but with expectations it is possible none of them do. Thoughts?

  151. Admiral Akbar on

The salary cap may cost us Boyle, Stralman, Pouliot, Dom Moore, Brad Richards…

But at least we have hockey in Carolina, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nashville… And the Fish Sticks get to stay in NY and the Derbils remain viable despite having severe financial problems…

Bettman’s NHL is the gift that keeps on giving!

  152. Doodie Machetto on

I hate Kristo. Has nothing to do with his playing and everything to do with Sioux.

Putting him aside, Miller has good third line potential, Fast seems like a poor man’s Hagelin, and I don’t know anything about Haggerty. Lindberg has the big pedigree, but the few times I’ve seen him play, I’ve been left unimpressed.

I don’t see it happening next year, but maybe down the road, it’s not inconceivable that three of those guys are on the big club together.

  153. Doodie Machetto on

Glad more people are starting to see it my way. Richards is here until he officially is not. But unless and until he has officially been bought out, I expect him to be here next year, and worse yet, as captain.

  154. Eric what are you going to give up for Kane?

Kane was the 4th overall pick in 2009? a 40-50 pt scorer?

It will take someone of Staal’s caliber? When you consider Kane is only 22.

  155. Doodie – are you the straw that stirs the drink this morning?

Richards will be in Philly or NJ next year.

  156. Doodie Machetto on

Sioux, look at my gravatar. You may think it’s beautiful, but I’m stuck with it until April and it’s all because of stupid Kristo!!!

  157. I’m pretty sure that if Richards gets bought out, it’s not going to be until the end of the month. So, I’m going to resist the urge to refresh my Twitter feed every 30 seconds.

  158. RW – I think it all boils down to who plays the BEST hockey away from the puck.

Miller has the size, and 2 30 game seasons, so you think the coach is trying to get him there.

Fast – has the speed, but not the size. If we need more HaGOONalins he’s our guy.

Kristo- has he learned enough in the AHL, to make a difference in the NHL? I believe in the Kid, but I’ll stop beating his drum. I don’t want to offend Eric or Doodie.

Lindberg- a full year in the AHL, after an MVP year in Sweden, this should be the year he proves himself to earn his next NHL contract.

Haggerty – 4 years in college, he will have a year like Kristo did last year, I would guess. He has 2 years to prove himself.

Allen – had a solid year for defense for the Pack. He looks like he could easily handle minutes next to JMoops on the 3rd pair. Unless we bring in a GREENE type player.

Can McD handle the QB position on the power play? I think he can, and will. JMOOPS could grow into the #2, but it’s too early to tell.

So Sather HAS to bring in someone when Richie is bought out, and Doodie don’t think for a New York minute that he will be here next year. You are smarter than that!!!

  159. I love how people thought Richards was actually going to be bought out. That was hilarious.

  160. Doodie – You are a MAN of you WORD.

Reach around and give yourself a pat on the back.

Not everyone is in this world.

  161. Like Carp said earlier you will hear it on June 25th, no need to make life easier for the competition.

  162. Doodie – I got outbid on that clock at the Cullen Children Event event a couple of years ago. I really wanted THAT clock.

But I was willing to part with $1,500.

  163. I had to answer RW and Doodies statement.

I didn’t bring him up, I am allowed to reply :)

And yesterday was his birthday, so there’s that.

  164. Sioux

    Your scaring me reach around?

The clock ticking to June 30th. Can sather sign one of his own

  165. So I won’t say a word for 24 hrs as of 10:08.

Nothing about him, but I can’t promise the whole month of June yet :)

  166. Referring to Kristo as “him” means you mentioned him.

Richards is our new Captain. Everyone deal with it.

  167. Doodie Machetto on

I’d do Staal for Kane in a heartbeat. Then make resigning Stralman a priority to provide stability to the 2nd pair.

Kane’s cap hit = Staal + Pouliot’s raise (who would be gone anyway as we would have 3 LWs between Kane, THE, and Hagelin). Not to mention Staal isn’t a lock to be here after next season and would have to get a raise himself.

We would need a cheaper left-handed defenseman. Maybe someone like Nikita Nikitin.

  168. Doodie Machetto on

I took Sioux’s advice started giving myself a reach around in my office and I got fired.

  169. Sorry for your loss, Doodie. I think we are hiring around my office. I will speak with my higher ups and see if we can squeeze you in. Tons of freaks in my office.

  170. Kane for 4 years at 5.25M, they will want more of a return than Staal for a year, if they can’t resign him.

    So that won’t work.

  171. The Jets will want a scoring forward, a young D prospect, and a 1’st round to replace him.

Maybe a throw in like McIlrath or Miller.

  172. @DarrenDreger 2m
Leafs have trade offers on the table for Franson. So far, none acceptable. Preference is to re-sign him.

Maybe one of those offers will be Nash for Kadri and Franson.

  173. I’m fully expecting Lindberg to be given the chance to center a line next year once Richie is bought out.

  174. Rob in Beantown on

    Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
At least 8 teams have shown interest in acquiring the 1st pick overall from the Panthers. Van, Cgy, Edmtn and Tor among them.

  175. Doodie Machetto on

Eric, is that at the actual store?

Manny, the problem for me was that I was trying to squeeze myself in.

Sioux, I’d gladly throw in McIlrath, especially if it was into a dumpster.

  176. I need so bad a new ranger jersey with Callahan gone. I want so bad for it to be a white Kane jersey.

  177. Rob in Beantown on

I want a blue McDonagh jersey, a white Zucc jersey, and an alternate Lundqvist jersey

  178. I’m with ya Eric, just a different player.

With shots, at the Flying Puck before the game!!!

  179. Doodie Machetto on

Ulf is good as gone. Only question is whether it’s Carolina or Pittsburgh. It’s almost certainly Carolina, but I like the symmetry between the two organizations who are asking for him.

Former teammates: Lemieux and Francis have the exact same connection to Ulf.

GM: Rutherford was the GM of Carolina until he was replaced by Francis. If he spurns one for the other it adds a new dimension to Rutherford’s split from Carolina.

The real difference in connection is that he actually WAS a Penguin.

Me personally, if I’m him, I go to Carolina. As a first time head coach, it will be very difficult for him to deal with the egos of super duper stars Crosby and Malkin. Sure, Carolina is a tough spot to land right now, and most coaches tend not to survive rebuilds, but I think with his buddy Francis as the GM, he might have a better chance surviving than he otherwise would.

  180. Doodie Machetto on

Damn it. No way can I make it there for either of those dates/times. Too busy.

  181. Sioux – i don’t see that there is a real #1 out there that is available. I hear all the time how the “organ-eye-zayshun” is “big” on Stepan and now i hear the same quoted about Lindberg.

Stepan has come along well in the last 4 years

  182. Doodie Machetto on

Too much win now pressure in Pittsburgh. He has a slow start and he could be out halfway through his first season.

  183. If Richards were a member of the Devils how fast would Gary Bettman have found a loophole to get Lamoriello out of recapture hell – like Gary did with the Devils not losing a 1st round pick as part of the Kovalchuk affair?

  184. Here’s a name you haven’t heard, that might be available.

Austin Poganski (No. 100 on CSB)

  185. Doodie Machetto on

If we had lost to the Pens, it would have been 22, followed by 82.

Instead, we have 59 followed by 89.

  186. Well we won’t get Nick Smaltz, he will go in the top 20.

So I’m looking for a name around 90, 89 would be the pick.

  187. Poganski – Big wing who plays strong and fast. Has a powerful long stride and can carry defenders when crashing down low. Plays strong on the puck, with good hands and scoring smarts. Strong hard competitor who wins in the battle zones, wall, and behind the net. Always keeps his feet moving and makes chances for himself. Also displays good East-West lateral ability. Much to like in this developing wing. Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge.

  188. @NYRangers

I don’t think the Rangers have the goods, to get it.

  190. Doodie Machetto on

Sioux, I believe that somewhere is currently the majority of Western Europe and sub-saharan Africa, and all points east of there.

  191. Prob selling pucks. Maybe Nash is being sold at 90 percent off. Get rid of that del zaster.

  192. bull dog line on

the only one of the core I would trade is Staal, and i’m not sure I want to do that. bring back everyone else. pass on Thornton, Spezza, and Kesler.

  193. Evander Kane and Kreider on same line. Now were talking. Move Nash to Boyle spot on 4th line.

  194. Doodie Machetto on

While I agree it’s time for the ex-Rangers to go, maybe it would be better to wait until the offseason so Carp only has to do it once while dumping guys who won’t be back lack Asham, and adding new players that join the team.

  195. bull dog line on

how many playoff games did Gaborik play for the Blue Jackets? how many did the 3 players the Rangers got for Gaborik play in the last 2 years? the Rangers were not the team that gave Gabirik away to LA, that was Columbus.

  196. Doodie Machetto on

They both play LW. Let them play separate lines. Put Kane with MSL. MSL the setup man for Kane.

  197. Of all these names Kane the only one who gets me excited. Question is what’s asking price.

  198. Doodie Machetto on

We aren’t getting Kane, but boy, would I love to have him on our team.

The problem we have right now is that even after buying out Richards and spending most of that money on extending our FAs, we still need to sign another center to replace him.

Even if you break up Pouliot-Brassard-MZA (assuming Pouliot even comes back), to put Brassard as our 2C with St. Louis, what do you do with the rest of the team?

Let’s assume, for the sake of simplicity, all of our FAs come back.

    THE Kreider-Stepan-Nash
    Hagelin-Unnamed 3C-Pouliot

    THE Kreider-Stepan-Nash
    Pouliot-Unnamed 3C-MZA

    THE Kreider-Stepan-Nash
    Hagelin-unnamed 2C-MSL

I would say that replacing Brassard as the #3 center in free agency is the much easier move than replacing Richards as the #2, especially considering the cap crunch we are under. But doing so breaks up what was a very effective line for us. Tough decision.

  199. Doodie Machetto on

Of course, this assumes we buy out Richards, which we probably shouldn’t do.

  200. Doodie Machetto on

This wouldn’t happen because Nash wouldn’t waive his NMC to go there, but what about the following proposal:

Nash + Staal for Kane + Byfuglien. Dollars work out to be +1.3 heading to Winnipeg. Maybe we offer to retain 1 million a year on Nash to change it to +700k to us, which gives them space to work on a Staal extension and raise.

    Do you do that deal?

  201. bull dog line on

the best solution Doodie is to sign Stastny. add to the team, without subtracting from the core. I think Boyle and Stralman leave. I think Pouliot stays with a 2year deal. if Boyle goes, they make sure they keep Moore. the Steapn line, and the Brassard line stay as is. Stastny slots into Richards spot between MSL, and Hagelin.

  202. bull dog line on

I probably would do that deal. from the Jets standpoint though, no way Staal would ever resign there.

  203. Doodie Machetto on

Stastny is not coming here. We simply cannot afford him at UFA prices.

I’ve heard that he might take a discount to stay in Colorado at or near his current cap hit. But if he leaves for the open market, he’s getting well over 7.5 as the only thing close to a #1C.

The best available centers after him are Grabovski, Jookinen, and Bolland. That’s a REALLY steep decline.

  204. Doodie Machetto on

That’s a well-taken point. Winnipeg is a really crappy destination. Too bad Eric and Jordan don’t play there instead. Then I might be onto something (again, even though Nash would never waive his NMC to go there).

  205. Staal could. It’s the closest team to his hometown, if they are building a winning team.

Na ……. weather is so much nicer in Carolina :)

Not a chance for the Jets to get him.

  206. Doodie Machetto on

In my hypothetical trade situation, do you play Byfuglien at RW or D? With Nash gone, MSL slots up to the RW1, leaving MZA and Byfuglien to be RW2/3. However, with Staal gone, we have a big hole on our 2nd pairing D (presuming Stralman is also gone).

Definitely on the point on the PP, but curious about ES.

I’d probably play him on defense.

  207. Doodie Machetto on

I think the hope on O’Reilly is that he goes to arbitration plays the season out, and sees that Colorado is trending in the right direction so he takes a discount to stay, much like they are also hoping from Stastny.

Either way, they can’t afford O’Reilly within their salary structure at his $6.5MM QO, so arbitration is basically a must for them.

  208. Doodie Machetto on

Like I said, no way would Nash ever waive his NMC to go there. Was just playing a thinking game.

  209. bull dog line on

Brian Boyle wants a bigger role wherever he goes. question, which Stanley Cup contending team would Brian Boyle slot as a 3rd line player? for him to be a 3rd liner, he is going to have to play for a middling team.

  210. I don’t see Sather making a BIG splash at all this year.

Sign the players we need, the youth is ready to play, and make a few moves in the draft.

    ….. and buyout Richards.

  211. bull dog line on

as a 4th liner Sioux. where would he be a 3rd liner. that is what he is looking for.

  212. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ales Hemsky or Derik Roy become a Ranger in the off season.

Sather might get a good value out of a veteran player, that wants to play on an original 6 team.

  213. If we cut Richards and sign Stastny for $7-8m we would have to trade someone to get under the cap or lose one of the FA’s that we thought would be kept (THE Kreider, JMoops, Brass, Zucc, Pouliot).
At this point i’d say Boyle, Stralman and Carcillo are gone.

  214. Wow, it’s interesting to me to see you guys leaving this roster almost identical.

While it did finish as EC champs, there is no way that every player is coming back with the exception of secretariat.

I know the thought of the roster changing is scary for some if you and it obviously won’t be a complete overall, but it’s pretty reasonable/realistic to think thee might be 4 or so new players next year.

Take into account they had 0 finishers (for different reasons) and were out muscled down low in both zones, I’m sure slats has something in mind.

Take it further that the big fish kinda flopped again in the playoffs with the current centre alignment, slats might just look for a centre.

Slats also doesn’t like to let folks just walk away for nothing as a UFA, so players with expiring contracts at the end of the coming season may be on the move.

If they add top line players for more $$$, lower line guys that make good scratch may be on the way out for less expensive options.

    Don’t be so naive folks.

  215. _He’s looking for the biggest pay day, everything else is secondary_

As well it should be. He can try for a ring or he can guarantee himself several more million (and still try for a ring).

  216. Doodie Machetto on

I could see Pittsburgh or Chicago maybe using him as a third line wing.

Pittsburgh’s depth is so bad, he really would be among their 9 best forwards. Chicago needs a 2C so badly that if they have to keep Saad there, it would definitely open up an opportunity for Boyle on their third line.

Bollig-Kruger-Versteeg (assuming they don’t dump him)

  217. Doodie Machetto on

I’m still holding out hope we trade Dorsett for a mid round pick and resign Carcillo to be his much cheaper replacement.

  218. Wicki that’s what I’m thinking. IF a big name center comes in, it will be a Thornton to center Nash or MSL.

Youth will move up to the 4th line / 3rd wing.

Zucc’s line could all come back, but he has to be the 1’st to be signed.

  219. Doodie Machetto on

Also, in losing Handzus, they lost their #1 PK player among forwards. Boyle would definitely help them there.

Although, his hope to play the PP isn’t happening in Chicago. Not a chance.

  220. Doodie Machetto on

If Boyle isn’t back and/or they trade Dorsett, the Rangers overspend on Shawn Thornton. That move has Sather written all over it.

  221. Maybe reading too much into it, but guys like Miller, who shows up (technically) late for camp and not in top shape; Falk, who would rather watch than play; and the new kid who also watches instead of trying to develop his game in the AHL, all scare me.

  222. We need goals, surely, with #19 jettisoned, but losing Boyler, Dorsett, and PullOut turns us back into Smurf Central.
