Alain Vigneault

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Practice Day

THE MODERATOR:  Alain, how did that shape the rest of your coaching career?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Well, that could be a really long answer.  I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version of it.  Montreal is a great place to coach.  It’s one of the one of the original six teams, as a coach you have to make sure your team is ready, you’re ready.
So I think it brings out the best in people.  As we all know, a lot of the attention in Canadian markets on a 24/7 basis on your team, so it’s a good place to coach and a good place to play.

Q.  (No Audio)?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Well, I would say to you that I was six years in between NHL jobs.  Got fired from the Habs and my next coaching job was in Montreal coaching the junior team.  Instead of being in front of 21,000 people, I was in front of 1,000 people coaching my team.  But at that time I had built the pay, I had a family to make sure I was providing for, and that was the only place I could work.  That’s where I always felt that working was honorable, and I went to work there.  Did a couple more years Junior, and I was fortunate to land a job in the American League.  Then from there I was fortunate enough to get a second chance at coaching in this league.

Q.  This is a team that has no designated captain.  I wonder how that’s evolved and how that works?  It seems to work well, and if you’ve ever had that kind of experience before?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I don’t believe in any team you need guys to have letters to lead.  Some guys, you know, leading is the ability to influence people.  The ability to influence them to do the right thing.  If you have that influence, and you have that ability, you don’t need to have a C or an A on your sweater to do that.
So, that being said, we’ve got I think quite a few guys on our team that have the ability to influence in the right way, and they do it.  I mean, they listen to what we want as far as standards and what we want to be part of this culture, and they help us supply it.

Q.  Was there ever (No Audio)?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I mean, the goalie for a couple of years (laughing).

Q.  A couple of guys were talking earlier that you keep them calm.  Was that something when you had your meetings with people in this organization that they felt was important that following towards?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I have nothing to do with following John.  This is about me being me and bringing the right thing to this team.  That has nothing to do with what happened before me.

Q.  What do you expect from the crowd tomorrow and how important is their energy?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Well, having fan support is obviously huge at this time of the year.  Unconditional love, it’s something that’s really beneficial to a team.  I mean, it’s so demanding on the ice.  They could really help you energy?wise.  It’s a fun time.  I’m sure it’s fun for them, and it’s definitely fun for us.

Q.  A follow?up to Jeff’s question about the leadership.  What has Brad Richards meant in the locker room?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I would say to you that even when Ryan was here, since day one, Brad has been without a doubt one of my top go?to guys.  He came here with a great attitude.  He came here with great work ethic.  He’s been a really strong role model since day one since I’ve been here.  I’ve really leaned on him and his experience.
When Ryan left for Tampa, Brad was getting a very good friend, so he helped, obviously, build that relationship with the rest of his teammates.  But since the first day this year he’s been a really big part of our team on the ice and in the dressing room and off the ice.

Q.  Can you talk a little bit about where Ryan McDonagh has brought his game since the beginning of the playoffs and coming off the injury and what not and how much he’s elevated?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  He’s brought his game right back to where it was before he got hurt.  He was without a doubt our best defenseman, maybe to some extent our top player throughout the year.  That’s how good he’s been for us defensively and offensively.  Coming back from missing those few games, it took him a little bit more time than we anticipated for him to find his game.  It took him, I’m sure if you asked him, he would say the same thing, it took him more time than he anticipated to find his game, but he did find it at the right time, and we need him to continue that.

Q.  How close knit is this locker room compared to other teams you’ve been a part of?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I’ve been very fortunate as a coach.  I mean, I’ve had some good teams and I’ve had some teams that really put the team in front of them.  That is the only way you can have success in this league.  There is no doubt, though, that this team has really come together at the right time.  I would say since Christmas we were playing good before, not getting results, but since Christmas we’ve been slowly, but surely, getting better and better, coming together, and we hope that’s going to continue.

Q.  I’m wondering if (No Audio) for this job.
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I’ve had a lot of advice given to me over the years.  On such a short notice, I don’t think I can come up with one specific thing.  I would say though that everybody says to be yourself and to stick with what you believe in.  If at one point you’re shown the door, at least you did it your way.  I’ve got to think I was seven years in a Canadian market, and in the other Canadian markets at that time 20 coaches went through.  It’s a tough environment to coach.  I did it my way, and I’ve come here to New York in another great hockey market, and I’m doing it my way.

Q.  (No Audio)?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  He’s as good as he’s been all year.  Obviously, he’s in a zone right now, and at this time of the year you need strong goaltending.  The competition is so good, the shooters are so good.  If you make it to this time it’s because you’re playing against the best teams.  You need your goaltender to be your best player or one of your best players, and Hank’s certainly done that for us.

Q.  Can you talk about the difference or the benefit of getting Kreider back into the lineup?  What has it meant since he came back from that injury?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Well, he’s, as everybody knows speed is his best attribute.  That speed combined with that strength and size, and when he goes in on the forecheck, very tough for the other team’s defensemen.  If he goes and drives the net, it’s very hard for the defensemen to stop him.  He has a real strong net presence because he’s a big man.  So ever since we got him back and went through that Pittsburgh series, he certainly helped our team quite a bit.

Q.  (No Audio)?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  I caught the first part of the question.  I didn’t catch the last part.

Q.  (No Audio) talk about coming together?
COACH VIGNEAULT:  Yeah, for our group, Marty’s situation has been a challenging one, a delicate situation.  But I think for the most part our group has handled it really well.  You never know what the proper behavior is in these situations, but I thought for the most part our guys were there to support Marty, and we’re going to continue to do that as he’s going through this.

Michel Therrien
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Practice Day

Q.  On Thomas Vanek practicing with the fourth line, is that a demotion or is that an attempt to balance the lines now?
COACH  THERRIEN:  Don’t read too much, okay. All right. Today, don’t read too much.

Q.  Because they might change tomorrow?
COACH THERRIEN:  They might change tomorrow.

Q. I just wrote that, actually.
COACH THERRIEN:  Always a step ahead.

Q.   What is your scouting report or knowledge of the relationship between Briere and Vanek, if at some point in the series you decide to put the two together?
COACH THERRIEN:  You know what, the past is the past, you know?  I know they’ve got a good result a few years ago, but it’s a long time ago.  So, yes, they’ve built chemistry in the past, but don’t read too much.  I know you guys like to read about practicing and lines and all that type of thing, but don’t read too much.

Q.  I know you just said that and all, but just in the past you have tended to rely on duos up front and going back to duos that worked again.  I’m not reading too much, but based on –
COACH THERRIEN:  I  think  you’re reading too much.

Q.  I might be.   But today for practice, you decided to put Gio back with Pleks which is something that you used over the course of the year.  What is it about that combination that you think works?
COACH THERRIEN:  One thing, the Plekanec line needs to give us more.  I’m ready to stick sometimes with combination and with three guys working together as long as I see even the results sometimes is not there but the chances are there.  But if I see there are no chances, not much happening, so now I’m at a point where I have to make some decisions, and those are the reasons why at times a coach will make decisions regarding lines, because we see — we normally judge with goals and assists.  That’s not always the way we do things, but if I see they’ve got chances, if I see I like to stick with it.  If I see it’s the opposite, okay, now I’ve got to take some decisions.  Hopefully, by making some changes, something’s going to happen.

Q.  No matter who Vanek is paired up with, what’s he have to do to get back to being a real impact player in this series?
COACH THERRIEN:   Like I said before, we reach the Eastern Conference Finals right now, and we need to be able to do that.  The team, we need contributions from everyone.

Q.  Tokarski tomorrow?
COACH THERRIEN: Yes.

  1. I’ve spent the last 45 minutes watching videos of ’94. It was a great 45 minutes.

  2. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

We want the Cup. We want the Cup. We want the Cup.

  3. Whenever I hear Therrien’s name it reminds me of that hilarious song at the end of Best in Show about terriers.

  4. inthearmsofbrianboyle on

    Manny-O.
You sure put yourself through a great deal of pain.
    *VERY METAL*

Monsieur Vignault comes through as a down to earth and composed gentleman.
I hope he proves to be both a gentleman and a winner come June.

  5. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

    Video watched – check

nice to have check marks off the to do list :)

McD – top player all year???? ahead of Hank?

  6. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, my musical accompaniment is Cave In: Until Your Heart Stops.

When doing something so metal, I prefer listening to something with incomprehensible words (even if I actually know them).

  7. iManny-O-War on

Sioux: love you buddy but JESUS CHRIST. The Rangers aren’t winning the cup and no one cares about Kristo. He’s like 7th on the Depth chart.

  8. Hmm. So Les Habs going with Blutarski again. He could still morph into Dryden. The NY Rangers are involved, after all.

  9. Doodie Machetto on

Jiri Slegr? Although I guess having appeared in an actual game in the Final is worthwhile.

  10. iManny-O-War on

That’s a great album, Doodie. A little bit too Metal-Core for me, but some awesome double bass parts.

  11. iManny-O-War on

And the team either Rangers or Habs would have to beat is likely named the Blackhawks and is, at best, the Kings.

    No chance.

  12. Hartman didn’t qualify to have his name on the Cup. Neither did Olczyk, but at least he played in a playoff game. The Rangers had to *beg* the league to put them on.

  13. “If the Rangers do win it all this year, which name would be the most bittersweet exclusion for you?”

    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Kristo.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”
    “Callahan.”

  14. I have a very irrational belief that Gorton is the secret genius who makes the good moves that allow us to keep being a playoff team despite Sather’s bad moves. I don’t want him to go in case I’m right.

  15. Doodie Machetto on

I like the breakdowns. It’s a very technical album. Those guys are masters of sound.

  16. Doodie Machetto on

Fact: Jeff Gorton was not a part of the Rangers’ front office when Sather made the Gomez for no Gomez (and McDonagh) trade.

  17. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Callahan can be put on the cup because he played more than 1/2 the games, 41 which is required to be put on the cup. or 1 game in the FINALS.

  18. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Ding,Ding,Ding – Doodie googled it and IS correct.

Jiri Slegr played 1 game in the finals in 2002. His name is on the cup because Jiri Fischer served a 1 game suspension for a nasty cross check.

Red Wing win the cup. Both Jiri names are on the cup as a Stanley cup champion.

Slegr can in on the trade deadline. played only 8 games that year, and only 1 game in the finals.

  19. These guys also will not get on the Cup if the Rangers win (LOL), unless they play a game in the Final:

    McIlrath
    Allen
    Mashinter
    Asham
    Fast
    Falk
    JT Miller

I think Diaz gets on because he played more than 41 regular season games total.

  20. But Slegr actually met a qualification. Hartman and Olczyk didn’t. The Rangers used the injury excuse, but truthfully, they weren’t going to play enough anyway.

  21. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Manny I’m just talking about names on the cup :)

And who gets to bring it home.

Johnny Toews will bring it home. But if the Rangers bring it home, then I will have to travel to Minneapolis for McD or Stepan’s day :)

The cup will come “home” either way.

  22. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

So I’m thinking the Habs can’t win the Cup!

That the only team I don’t have a connection with :)

  23. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Miller, Fast, Carcillo still have a chance to have their name on the cup – if they play one game in the FINALS.

So it could happen…… just a little bummed that K didn’t get the shot this year. That’s all I’m talking about.

  24. inthearmsofbrianboyle on

    TSN Montreal – very odd.

First the host asks listeners not to write negative tweets because they need all the POZY they can find.

The next moment he asks his studiopanel which current Rangers number they think will hang from the rafters 20 years from now.

    It all turns silent …

Sounds like pain is pleasure in Montreal…

  25. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Gravy – NO. Has to play for the team that won it. IF he plays 1 game in the final series than yes, if the Rangers win it.

  26. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

Miller and Fast played some postseason games (unless I’m hallucinating and just made that up) so I could see the Rangers petitioning to get them on

  27. You can only petition *extenuating* circumstances. Like injury. For instance, if Klein got hurt before the Final, and the Rangers won, they could make a case to get him on, even though he only played 30 games for the Rangers.

  28. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

I have some cool pictures with the Stanley Cup.

ALL on the Computer tower in the Garage that MRS. Sioux almost threw out this spring.

    NO NO NO NO

I have to plug it in and get some pictures off that before we can ditch it.

Before the iphone, everything that was on a digital camera – is on that “computer”.

  29. Playing in the first three rounds doesn’t matter….only playing a game in the Final (assuming the player did not play 41 regular season games with the team).

  30. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Gravy if the Rangers wanted him on the Cup, he could.

I doubt they will put his name on the cup….

    ….. and they SHOULD NOT.

IF he wanted his name on the cup, he should have signed his new deal. Bye Bye

  31. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, Brodsky tried to do his own thing and it wasn’t very good, at all. I think Cave In just occasionally plays a track or two (or in some cases the whole album) of Until Your Heart Stops.

  32. Sioux: Currently, a player must have played at least half of the regular season games (usually 41 in current league format) for the championship team (*provided the player remains with the team when they win the Cup*) or played in at least one game of the Stanley Cup Finals.

    *NO* Callahan

  33. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

I had to google the last name, I just remember the story and both players were name Jiri.

Fun facts. I also know the name of the player that was the only one to puke in the cup :(

  34. Doodie Machetto on

They also put out an album a few years ago. I haven’t listened to it much. I thought it was kind of a combination of the worst of both worlds.

  35. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

It seems *unfair* that a player could be a postseason sub on the winning team and not get their name on the Cup. Then again, life isn’t *fair*.

  36. Doodie Machetto on

Well, Avery didn’t. That’s all the proof you need to know he was a [female washing product that gets my comments put in moderation]-ey mc[same female hygiene product]-erson. The Red Wings made absolutely no effort to get him on the Cup.

  37. Manny-O-War on

Can you guys *PLEASE* shut up about the *CUP* For crying out loud you idiots are going to make me have an absolute NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

  39. Manny-O-War on

Do you guys realize that if the Habs win on Thursday night then we are in SERIOUS trouble. We cannot cough up this 2 game lead. If the Habs win on Thursday then Sunday becomes a *MUST WIN* scenario.

I can’t even see past the next game. I don’t know how you all can talk about the *CUP*

  40. Manny-O-War on

    That’s much better.

I would rather have you guys kick me in the *athletic supporter* than talk about who will have their names on the Cup. Christ almight

  41. Lol, cup talk.

But, allow yourself to feel it, on this, a non game day. No harm can come, it’s a non game day.

Why not us? Eighty years and countless disappointments, I know, I know but still, what if we’re that team? The chosen ones.

Try it for today, tomorrow, game day, let terror reign supreme.

It feels good, weird but good.

  42. Relax all this series turns if we have another game 4 moment .

    1st period Tom is gigantic

  43. I’m just glad we’re at the end of May and can even fathom being terrified or over confidant.

  44. Manny-O-War on

There are a million reasons that WHY NOT US. It’s NEVER us. History proves WHY NOT US. It’s NEVER US.

  45. Manny-O-War on

Eric is right. Habs win Thursday and Sunday is a *MUST WIN*. If the Rangers cough up a two goal lead and make it a best of 3. LORD SAVE US.

  46. LOL. You guys are awesome. Talking about the Cup when 5 games ago nobody imagined it,and when they’re still so far away. Miles.

  47. Manny-O-War on

After what we just did to the Penguins it should be VERY clear that the Habs can do something similar to us. It’s not even as severe!

  48. Robby Bonfire on

Mr D. – Yes to Cally and Dubinsky and Anisimov being Rangers Stanley Cup names. I miss them all.

  49. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

I’m just talking CUP trivia. That’s all.
How you get your name on the cup.
What you do when its “your” day with the cup.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

Can we put Mike Gartner on it so that his 700+ goals will have some meaning?

  51. Six miles away.

    If wins equal mile.

Papa said it well last night and I’m paraphrasing. 11/12 we we’re expected to come out of the East. This year not so much. This year is a bonus.

So even though Carp called them finishing second in the metro early, I wasn’t convinced. Totally resigned to a second round flame out. Here we are, it’s a delight and for the first in a while I’m actually *enjoying* being a Ranger fan.

Tomorrow ? I go back into panic mode.

  52. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

You can touch the cup, you can eat out of the cup, you can drink from the cup, you can even kiss the cup.

IF you hoist the cup over your head, your name better be on the cup

    I think is the LAW.

  53. Pens- MAF
    Rangers- Hank

Go with for today, try it. It feels dirty but it feels good.

  54. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Toews/Greene would/could bring it to the Ralph. Many Sioux players have in the past. If not a trip to Winnipeg for the day, and a set of golf clubs could be in order.

Rangers players would bring it to the Twin cities for Something, so that would be kind of cool to check out.

    That’s all I’m talking about.

    Habs-no interest what so ever.

  55. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

This year, Hank wins the cup. Then we trade Hank for 3 studs. TAM wins 2 more cups. So the real question becomes, can the Rangers 4 – peat?

  56. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

MrD – my dead brain cells are more informative than Carton’s alive brain cells. That guy is beyond a tool. He’s a tool’s tool.

  57. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Lucic – “I’ll tell you 2 players that won’t have their name on the cup even if the Habs win….. because I’m going to kill them. Ill pour acid on their face, set them on fire, and shoot them in the chest a hundred times each.”

  58. Doodie Machetto on

Why are you wearing a mask? Did you get your face burned with acid or something?

  59. _Can we put Mike Gartner on it so that his 700+ goals will have some meaning?_

There are emotional parallels I’m not letting myself acknowledge.

  60. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

    Rangers win on Thursday!

Hab can throw the kitchen sink at us, the *will not* get past Hen-rik, unless they have something bigger and faster than a Rhino :)

  61. Saddest part of ’94 was that Gartner was not there for the cup win. I know Keenan hated him and maybe they don’t win without that trade but I still

  62. Doodie Machetto on

If you think they wouldn’t have won with Gartner instead of Anderson, you’re crazy. He was 10X the player Anderson was at that point.

  63. _I still hate the trade_

Current me wouldn’t have been able to handle the lead up to the Cup in ’94. Like every single trade, and there were a ton, would have ruined me either emotionally or logically. When I die, probably at the hands of a creepy dude from the internet, the first question I’ll ask will be how many cups the Rangers would have won without stripping the 92-93 beginning roster.

  64. I can’t believe Anderson still makes appearances with the Rangers. It makes me ill. I have no complaints about the other ’94 trades since, well, they won. The post ’94 trades are another story.

  65. did anyone remind Carp of what he wanted us to remind him about the other day?
    and if he was
    reminded
    remind me
as to when he actually said this reminded
    thought
    thanks

  66. Saw a Steven Brodsky show a few years ago. Figured I might get some old Cave In songs so why not.

It was him alone and his stupid acoustic guitar. So not *Metal*

  67. Carp has been reminded about 30 times. The buildup on this has been *huge*

    Hope it’s some juicy nuggets.

  68. nah, it’s not juicy I just thought it was funny. Have had to wait for various reasons, and still some more. I promise, tonight.

The Matteau story: After the first OT the team was coming out onto the ice. Matteau broke a skate lace. So he had to go back into the lockerroom. The NHL didn’t know he was still in there and moved the trophy into the hallway. So when Matteau came out he had to go around the trophy. And he rubbed it for luck. Also, Eddie O was there and Eddie kissed Matteau’s stick for luck. I think Eddie had done it in the earlier game in which Matteau also scored in double-OT. You know the rest.

  69. well
    i guess
    consider mine Reminder 31
    and
    yours Reminder 32
(i hope he’s not waiting ’til we reach 1,000!!)
    sheeeeeeeeeeesh!

  70. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Lucic – “you’ll be mouthing off pretty well next season after I’ve ripped your tongue out and slit your neck so bad, you have a bobble head”

  71. Gartner was all Keenan. Jackass. They might have won more easily with Gartner than Anderson, a Ranger for nine regular-season games.

  72. Good stuff, Carp. Thanks.

Wanna say stupid -Poo- Matteau but I guess it doesn’t apply.

  73. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

*Carp* – do you have any copies of the “Hockey Dragon Slayer”. It would only make sense to have an autographed copy, from it’s creator. Correct.

  74. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

    Ranger – LOL.

I bought Zip’s book for my kid ….

I want Carp’s book for ME.

But then the Kid Graduates in 2 weeks :)

  75. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Busy night Boys, I must be on my way…..

see you on the other side :)

  76. What’s amazing is that in a one year span, they traded 4 kids under 25, one finished w/ 1,000 points, one w/ 900, one w/ 500 and one w/ 400. Unreal talent dump.

  77. Ya, I hate how they justified that trade because Anderson scored a couple of goals in the playoffs.

The knock on Gartner was that for all his regular season prolific goal scoring, he turned into Rick Nash/Skid Crosby in the playoffs.

Not sure how true that really is… wonder if someone will lookup Gartner’s year-by-year playoff totals vs Anderson’s one post-season with the Rangers.

  78. and Carp, I agree with you. I think they could have won the cup with Gartner, and was upset when they traded him give the guy was a perennial 40 goal scorer.

What was Keenan’s beef with him? Did he consider him too soft?

  79. iManny-O-War on

You guys think that Marisa Tomei resented having to kiss Jason Alexander?

  80. That’s my favorite game, Ranger-on.

Jerry, it’s Frank Costanza. Mr. Steinbrenner’s here, George is dead, call me back.

  81. Keenan didn’t like deeply religious guys. Thought Lidster was one. Late in the season he found out he wasn’t. Then he played.

  82. Chicago Folkyerself on

Roszival is the only Ranger to get his name on the Cup this year.

  83. Kenny Albert micheletti engblom again. No way Kenny does game 3 and 4 in la with him doing radio for rangers

  84. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If the rangers were playing the kings and the hawks tonight, rangers win 5-0. GWG Brassard.

  85. ThisYearsModel on

In the spot where Callahan’s name would have been, they can type “$6.5 Million per for 6 years.”

Jean Guy was an impeccable fashion icon. Those suede jogging outfits were way ahead of their time…

  89. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

When the Rangers play the Hawks for the cup, If AV were smart, he’d employ that Mucklerian move of playing McDunner on Left, Right Wing or Center to go against Sharp, Kane, Hossa, and Tays.

  90. bull dog line on

the 94 trades. Gartner was a trade that did not need to happen. they don’t win without the Amonte trade.

  91. Gartner, Amonte, and Turcotte were all guys I thought were good enough to stay on that team…You are talking about pure goal scorers…Who knows how many more Cups they would have had?

  92. Hawks win 4-2. Win series in 5 go to 19-2 last 21 home games 8-0 this year. A dynasty in making

  93. bull dog line on

Turcotte brought Larmer. you make that trade every day, and twice on sunday.

  94. bull dog line on

the Zubov trade has been discussed a lot here. it was all about Campbell. Kovalev too.

  95. From your mouth to gods rangers beat hawks. There real good. First things first lets put the hammer down tomorrow.

  96. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If Lucic were to redline on his rage gauge: over/under on killing spree 12.

    I take the over

  97. Dave Jackson number 8 last worked conf final 2009 didn’t ref in playoffs 2010-13

  98. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Will the garden crowd provide “ranger love” tomorrow. One would hope they’re loud, amped, and energized…

  99. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

The rangers getting Higgins McD and No Gomez plus the other two stiffs for Gomez, Busto, and the other still was made even worse as Higgins ultimately got us Prust….

  100. OK, so here’s the story. I found it very funny.
We’re in this two-day lohud metric/marketing training session Monday. They go right to the metrics. Top lohud pages are, as usual, Yankees blog, obituaries, Rangers blog and the main lohud page. By far. So the person running the training has it up on the big screen and she’s impressed that my post about the “big news” about Carey Price being out for the series is off-the-charts. She notices, though, there’s not much a social component traffic and asks why, and suggests maybe it’s not such big news. Whatever. She has no idea it’s my blog and that I’m sitting there, BTW.
But she also notices that the average visitor is staying well over two minutes, whereas the average visitor to any web page is 40 seconds or so. She’s terribly impressed and trying to get to the bottom of what’s being done so well.
Now me and the lohud digital editor, we know the answer. It’s because I could post a photo of a hot dog (which I had done on twitter) and you knuckleheads would still be in the blog all freakin day, and not just 40 seconds and out. It’s what you do. Also, because it was a playoff game day, the numbers were really exceptionally high.
The woman was going nuts over this. I’m sitting there chuckling.
So just for laughs, while she’s not looking, I go into the comments because I wonder what she’s going to see if she goes in there. Mind you, this is all up on a big projection screen and about 40-50 people are looking at it. And there in the comments, Doodie and a couple of the more mature boneheads are j(g)ibbering about beavers and wood.
Fortunately, they didn’t delve into the comments at that moment. But I was both terrified and dying laughing, as was the digital editor.
So, because I don’t say it enough … you guys rule.

  101. ps, the reason I had to wait to tell the story is because the training is ongoing, and I didn’t want the editors to see me telling you guys this story.

  102. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carp – combine the Obits with this blog….we’d be tied for second…

  103. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ricardo – mrs Eddie is laughing hysterically. Too bad the metrics lady couldn’t have seen either: Wang humor, the car seat cussing madly, or the Lucic killing handshake line jokes ;)

  104. iManny-O-War on

How do we beat the Yankees blog? Why aren’t we NUMBER ONE!?

    We let Carp down.

  105. iManny-O-War on

Why didn’t she say the average staying time per reader was over 8 hours?

  106. it’s probably because we didn’t reach 1,000 comments
    on Trade Deadline Day

    i blame Sather

  107. Olga, sorry if this was asked already, but who do you root for in a NYR-CHI final?

  108. iManny-O-War on

That question literally can’t be asked enough NYR. It will help me puke more often

  109. iManny-O-War on

The beaver discussion started out very scholarly with a discussion about heart rates of rodents.

What other hockey blog can get you that!?

  110. iManny-O-War on

Good point ilb. I guess the stupid Yankees blog has 162+ Go Time posts?

Maybe we should have one for Seinfeld reruns.

  111. Olga Folkyerself on

    NYR_FAN

I’ll burn that bridge when I come to it.

    Basically it’s a Win-Win situation for me…

  112. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Manny – were you in on the beavers/wood comments? Should have linked the Nhl channel duo of Tappen/Johnson

  113. Look at me, posting with integrity about beavers. If only I wood have known what was going on at blog HQ.. might have faced stiff punishment..

  114. iDoodie Machetto on

Beavers was a Manny and Doodie production that Manny thoroughly won. Hat tip to Mrs. Machetto for watching a bunch of female beaver experts examining beavers.

  115. iDoodie Machetto on

“It was him alone and his stupid acoustic guitar. So not Metal”

Acoustic? Oh you mean grandpas guitars!?

  116. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Doodie Manny Latona – very very funny thread. It brought tears to my eyes….Mrs. Eddie is Lol’ing

  117. They’re still saying Doughty? I’m pretty sure Carter redirected it.

    And it’s now 3-2.
Good, let them go the distance. Just in case…you know.

  118. Brown – Kopitar – Gaborik

    just a tad better than

    Prospal – Christensen – Gaborik

    no?

  119. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

In a literal reversal of history; and it’s on to LA and let’s win there….

  120. Stranger Nation on

I referenced Mr. Latona in my initial response to Carp’s story. He is from a land of scholarly gentleman.

Now, thinking about his Duckbill infatuation, there must be, I say, there should be some connection between this here man and the Animal Kingdom. Possibly, a vet, I mean, veter, I say, animal lover of some sorts.

“Pay attention to me boy! I’m not just talkin’ to hear my head roar”

  121. iManny-O-War on

There is plenty of room in there, NYR. Could probably fit most of the Kings team in Crawford’s head.

  122. Kings need to win this series to balance the universe. Can’t let the Hawks have a chance at 3 Cups in 5 years.

  123. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carter was snorting coke right before jumping on the ice to score that goal.

  124. iManny-O-War on

@PumperNicholl: Five unanswered goals by the LA Kings in Chicago? We’re officially a Matt Greene goal away from the apocalypse. Hug your loved ones.

  125. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Manny – i find him to be a tool. Look at him cross eyed in the crease and he gets all roid rage like…..

  126. iManny-O-War on

@ChrisBottaNHL: I asked Gary Bettman about *Isles* sale. Bettman: “Charles (Wang) is still deciding what he wants to do. No decision has been made.”

  127. iManny-O-War on

Eddie: Quick plays goal like a psycho. Don’t think I could watch him if I cares about the team.

  128. Chicago Folkyerself on

And that’s that. No ledge for me.

Let’s Go Hawks. On to LA and let’s win there.

  129. Let the Chicago LA game be a lesson to all of youse who are foolishly carrying on about the next round: Montreal could come out en fuego tomorrow night and turn the whole thing 180 degrees. The Rangers are nowhere near the cup yet, nor the finals. Keep it in check boys.

  130. Stranger, that connec-, I say, connection you made is subtle as a hand grenade in a barrel of oatmeal. Thanks, I say, thanks for the compliment. Praise, that is.

  131. iManny-O-War on

You’re almost as good as the real Foghorn, Latona. Or should I say he’s almost as good as you?

  132. I always wondered what would have happened if Mel Blanc pulled a Jim Henson and tragically passed away at a relatively young age. So many awesome characters would have died with him!

  133. Rob in Beantown on

How can we make Rangers Report number one? Everybody’s going to have to put in some longer hours, I’m afraid.

  134. Hey – all you guys talking about the cup are complete shmendricks! (Look it up…). You want to anger the hockey gods? Are you insane?? We might beat Montreal but it’s no sure thing. We would be heavy heavy underdogs against either Chicago or LA. It would be a minor miracle if we won the cup and will only happen with a lot of help from said hockey gods so please – make sure they know you were kidding! Jeez Louise guys —

  135. Eddie – been a ranger fan since 64. 1 cup in 50 years tends to make one a bit cautious – I really do think we have a chance but – ya know – with the hockey gods listening we must guard our thoughts :-)

  136. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

Carpy, great story!! You deserve the popularity. This place is great.

You and the Boneheads, perfect together!!

    Thanks!!

  137. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

So, now, all the hockey geniuses are gonna talk about LA winning that ‘Stanley Cup Series’ in the west.

This morning it was 180 degrees different.

  138. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

Rob, I’m not so sure I say next win. Even if we lose tomorrow I still like our chances against an AHL goalie in a 7 gamer. I don’t see this ‘d’ tightening up that much and us falling apart, unless the injury bug hits.
I believe our current leadership is saying and doing all the right things and the buttons being pushed are working, whoever our captain is.

But having been a fan for over 45 years, I agree with Markus. Superstition prevails. :)

  139. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Markus – but in all those years, the rangers just missed out, easily, on 30 or 40 Cups. This is our year….

  140. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

another day , another .40 cents

  141. Remember Gartner as a sort of Hagelin with hands. Skates glided like wild birds.

  142. Tell the truth for once, all you who complain about naysayers. Who amongst yiz would see us down 3 games to one against the Crosbys and now up 2 zip with Montreal?

  143. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Carp – I just died laughing at the beaver blog story.

    Tears!

    Rolling down my face laughing.

    Thanks!!!
