Game 2: Rangers-Canadiens in review

1) Just please, please, please don’t expect that this is going to be easy. First of all, remember in ’96, the last time these teams played, Montreal won the first two at MSG, then the Rangers won four in a row, three in Montreal. Never saw that coming. But also, these things are never easy. Even sweeps aren’t easy. Montreal was much better in Game 2 than Game 1, and will get better in Game 3.

2) That said, ya boys did a bunch of things, as you know: Won their fifth in a row, four of those on the road; went two games up in a playoff series for the first time in nine series; snapped an NHL record 13-game losing streak when leading a series, and an 11-game losing streak immediately after taking a lead in a series.

3) And how did they do it? Well, again, not easily. The Rangers did get a good bounce when Ryan McDonagh’s shot deflected home off Jacques Gorges immediately, 17 seconds, after the Habs took a 1-0 lead. Enormous point in the game. McDonagh=Monster. And so was his partner, Dan Girardi who, in a game in which the Canadiens came out all fired up and frantic, played a solid, strong, physical and somewhat nasty game. Wore the big-boy pants. McDonagh — I can’t remember how the Rangers got him … anybody? — has six points in the series. My God.New York Rangers v Montreal Canadiens - Game Two

4) And they did it by withstanding a furious start. There was no way the Canadiens could possibly sustain that pace or intensity. But there was also no way they should have been down 2-1 after one period. As Henrik Lundqvist said, the Rangers helped the Habs’ early push. The 1-0 goal came off a Mats Zuccarello cough-up, a puck in his skates, in front. Then there were a couple of terrible D-zone shifts by the Brad Richards line, and Marc Staal and Anton Stralman struggled early. Carl Hagelin took an offensive-zone penalty, and those are never good, but when you’re trying to hold off an avalanche, it’s really bad.

5) But, of course, Lundqvist came up with 40 saves. He’s allowed six goals in this five-game winning streak. Two of the three goals he’s allowed in this series have gone in off a Ranger. Just an incredible shift. The guy is so focused and so prepared, and so mentally tough. After holding off the Habs early, he made that great save on P.K. Subban in the third, up 3-1, and then withstood some dangerous chances during the 6-on-4 power play late, after the Benoit Pouliot penalty.

6) Speaking of which, the Rangers took some dumb ones in this game. Both teams did. Ex-Tire Fire Thomas Vanek took a ridiculous one. Pouliot’s boarding penalty was beyond mindless. Gotta love his compete level in these playoffs but he was really lucky there wasn’t an injury because it could have been a double-minor or a major, and it could have altered this game, could have turned this series into 1-1. And there was no need for that hit at that point. Ditto for Chris Kreider’s penalty. Got to understand the situation. Montreal had nothing going, the Rangers were shutting it down, and bam, he puts them on the power play.

7) Still, Kreider, I thought, handled himself very well considering all the lunacy surrounding his sliding into Carey Price in Game 1. In case you’re just getting back from Mars, Price is out for the series with a knee injury and the Habs fans painted Kreider as a villain, and Habs players looked for some revenge. Kreider ignored it all and played another strong, effective game. It was his screen that allowed Martin St. Louis’ power-play bomb to get through untouched, an enormous goal in the game, for a suddenly (since Kreider came back) revived power play. Also made a great pass on Rick Nash’s goal …st. louis vs. markov

8) Which brings us to the Daily Nash-O-Meter. Scored a garbage goal in Game 1, but it got him off the skid. The one he scored in Game 1 wasn’t garbage at all. Terrific pass from Derek Stepan on the play, too. Nash’s PK play in the third period was a big point in the game. If he gets hot …

9) So now what do the Habs do, having used three goalies in two games? The kid, Dustin Tokarski, wasn’t bad at all, though he didn’t get square on the Nash goal and it went in off his body. Do they stick with him (probably) or go back to backup Peter Budaj? Or do they have anybody else back there behind the curtain?

10) Stepan had another very strong game … but … How many times does he not shoot when he has a chance. I mean, there’s a kid goalie, fighting it after the Nash goal, Stepan has a third-period odd-man rush, they give him the shot and he tried to force a pass. Montreal goes the other way. I mean, talk about killer instinct. Got to fire that puck at the rookie goalie. Got to.

11) Another superb coaching of four lines by Alain Vigneault, and waves of pressure and near textbook protection of the lead. He moved Dominic Moore into injured Derick Brassard’s spot. Moore isn’t Brassard, but when you have a lead, he’s better on that line than Brassard. And that’s not a slight on Brassard. Now, with one game in the next five days — Thank you very much, NBC — Maybe he gets Brassard back for Game 3 (Thursday) or Game 4 (Sunday).

12) AV even had Kreider on the 4-on-4 in the third, a rarity. What next? A timeout? (it’s a joke, relax). Seriously, this is why Kreider needs to figure out the away-from-the-puck stuff, so he can be trusted in those situations that beg for his skill set.

13) New game, new rulebook. Every freakin’ night in these playoffs and all during the regular season, too. They call that stupid one-arm tug every single time (Kreider’s, for example, and he needs to be more aware of that stuff, too). But they let go a brutal slew-foot by Mike Weaver on St. Louis, after a whistle, in front of the net, when both referees really don’t have anything else they need to be watching. They bought a penalty drawn, I thought, by a Hagelin embellishment, and I thought Subban took a dive on Kreider’s, and the penalty that led to St. Louis’ PPG, I thought, was completely bogus.

14) You guys cracked me up yesterday with all your doom and gloom and (probably deserved) dread that this rookie goalie was going to come out of nowhere and shut out ya boys and even up the series. I know, I know. You are Rangers fans. That’s how you think.

    Awesome review Carp!
    ‘Returning from Mars…’
Great to start the day with a laugh!

  2. Good morning, boneheads!

Lol @ #1! What, are you protecting our sanity? We know how it goes, we’ve seen it all with this team. I remember that series too. Vincent Damphousse was a hero at MSG for two games. And then his team just fell apart.

We know how it goes. Except I believe this is a different team. Third period last night showed it. They play focused, and they play for each other. And, yeah, they also have Henrik Lundqvist.

  3. And, again, thank you for all your hard work, Carp. Couldn’t wait for your review in the morning. And it is an excellent one, as expected. We are spoiled, indeed.

Enjoy the ride, folks. This is a special year, and a special team.

  4. You know i am ashamed of myself for every time i ever said softqvist.

Don’t expect a sweep. Don’t expect it to be easy. But in 1996 the rangers dominated every game except one in that series. They outshot montreal both games in New York. There was a belief that the rangers could come back on thibault and the Habs. I dont think there is quite the same belief conversely this year.

Game three in montreal the rangers were all over the Habs.

Game four was all richter. That was the one.

Business as usual in game 5 at home and a big lead in game six.

Plus that was round one. This is the conference finals. Different teams. Different flaws. I kinda like the rangers chances right now.

  5. One shift one period one game. Halfway home. Let the Cinderella run continue. I’m enjoying it (Matty) especially when the game isn’t on.

Will be a great next 48 hrs. Time to hang with wife tonight and watch girlie shows.

Will be third night if anyone wants meet at puck. May leave now.

  6. Great review as always Carp. Nothing like that morning coffee with a Carp review after a win.

    1. When Stepan passed on that odd man rush, i though about how many times Carp has pointed this bad trait out during the year. Stepan has a great shot, why doesn’t he use it?

    2. DEPTH! Ya gotta give Sather credit. Carcillo, Raffi Diaz.. How nice is it to have decent dependable players to slot in when needed? I HATED Carcillo before he got here, but you have to love how he has played for this team.

    3. Derek Dorsett and the 4th line: Man, were they good! Brian Boyle who take a lot of crap from this fan base at times does everything you could ask of a 4th line guy and penalty killer. I thought Derek Dorsett was particularly good. He is such a strong skater. At one point, he mad some ridiculous dipsy doodle moves to get a shot on goal. Where the hell did that come from.

    4. The Kreider wasn’t perfect. (Dumb penalty) But, “THE” was so strong on his skates and really held up to all the nonsense in Montreal about him. The pass on Nash’s goal was a beauty.

    5. Henrik Lundqvist: There are no words…

    6. I did not like the MSL trade when it happened. Giving up too much age, giving up draft choices…. But, maybe Sather knew what he was doing.

    7. Listening to Boomer and Carton. I love Boomer, he is a true blue fan. But Craig Carton is an asshat when it comes to Hockey. He is as clueless as Francesa.

    8. The last two games, I have been participating for the first time in the “it’s go time” game thread. So much fun! I have been missing out. It is like watching the game with a bunch of folks who love the team and the game as much as you do.

    9. Carp, thanks for the site!

    Can’t wait for Thursday!

  7. My mother is 26 (+60) today. I’m lucky to have her around. Both my parents, in fact. I was watching Marty play last night and kept thinking that it probably won’t fully hit him that he doesn’t have her anymore until this season is over. For all of us who are lucky to still have our parents, don’t take it for granted. Just ask Marty.

  8. Great review, great game.

Lol, Eric. I too am really enjoying this all, in the now. Game days are tough but that’s how my fandom works. Hope for the best, really, but expect the worse. It’s a conditioned self preservation response.

    LGR !!!

  9. Happy Birthday to your mom, ilb.
Yev, glad you are joining the go times, they add so much to the game for me and the more folks the merrier.

  10. No negativity here..just some..ahem…recommendations. Brad Richards…another fine effort..maybe no point on the PP….and Mr. Benoit Pouliot/Mr. THE Kreider..try to be a bit less aggressive on the forecheck. Rick Nash…I have been enjoying your defensive play…immensely…but adding some goals as well…simply sublime! Look…I coulld mention everybody….total team effort…so stay thirsty my friends…and as they say in Montreal… Vive Le Roi!

  11. I have been very critical of Nash, but he played great last night. Interesting to note, that the former Blue Jacket beat writer (Portzine?) tweeted that the world should be aware of Nash rising from his slumber. He said Nash binges when he scores…couldn’t have picked a better time.

  12. Great review, Carp…always the first I read after the NHL recap (more to see who they shelected as 3 shtars for comparison)…last point about Rangers fans hit the nail on the head, and the blog on the byte. LGR! It’s not over yet, but starting to look like a *sweep* if Henrik keeps this up.

  13. bull dog line on

Kreider, and Pouliot should remain as aggressive as they have been. it it what makes them so effective. if they take a few penalties along the way, so be it.

  14. inthearmsofbrianboyle(baldbuffoonedition) on

Thanks for another excellent review, Carp.

    #1 – Very true.

And – It really feels weird coming out of Montreal with two Ws.

No more Hanka, Hanka – please. He is one *competitive beast*. Looked like he spewed some honest swewegian four letter words towards Zuccarello after the first goal.

I hope Brassard is good to go thursday. I think that line can exploit a team who needs to score some goals.

BTW Carp – you asked someone to remind you of something…

  15. ‘There’s talk on the street, it sounds so familiar-
    Great expectations
    Everybody’s watching you…’

  16. ‘They step on the ice,
    The music begins to play.
    Hopeless Romantics,
    Here we go again…’

  17. Whether the Rangers win it all, or they don’t, this playoff will be remembered for MSL’s character and awesome King Henrik’s goaltending…sorry, Miami, but THE Kreider story comes in behind them.

  18. Stranger Nation on

A large bandwagon pulling up in front of MSG. Told no room left, even SRO

  19. Carp

While we all know its possible, do you honestly believe Tokarski or Budaj is capable of backstopping the Habs to wins in 4 of their next 5 games?

  20. Admiral Akbar on

I can’t believe we are waking up this morning to find the Rangers only TWO Wins from playing in the Stanley Cup Finals. Unbelievable!

  21. There is a >0% chance that Dolan accidentally sign the wrong forms, and replaced Sather with Phil Jackson in error. The Post will discover it in July

  22. Nash’s goal never happens if it werent for the display of blazing speed from THE Kreider in game 1.
Look how the D almost collapsed on top of their goalie to take away the space behind them, thankfully Stepan has the smarts to drive the net and THE Kreider has the hockey sense to pass to his wide open team-mate.

  23. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

Once again, Carpy, great review. Like it is, you tell it!!

    #12… for the ages. Hysterical!!!

  24. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

You can worry about THE’s game away from the puck, but you can’t persuade me about his import to this team’s run.

  25. Anybody still think it was a dumb idea to sign Hank? Yeah, didn’t think so. He made at least 10 really tough saves last night. Ones that could have easily been goals with lesser goalies. And I saw a few old tyme kick saves and a beaut from him, which means hes’s standing up more. You could just feel his confidence. As much as I like Pouliot’s game, one of these days one of those dumb offensive zone penalties are going to hurt the Rangers. Play aggressive but play smart. McD = beast. Can’t say enough about his game. My son who was very young when the Rangers won the cup in 94 asked me if McD is just like Brian Leetch. And you know, he’s really almost at Leetch level. I think McD is a bit better defensively, but Leetch was better offensively. But in 2 years time, McD could be as good. And Leetch is my favorite all-time Ranger. THAT’S how impressed I am with him.

Uncle Glennie’s moves don’t look all that bad now do they?

I agree about Boyle, he’s really been great playing his type of game. Dorsett surprises me, because he really has some skills. He made that great move, and he had a couple of really nice passes that set up scoring chances.

But this game was Hank’s, and he’s on a roll. The puck must look like a beach ball coming at him now.

  26. Everyone united in Hank and McDonagh as top 2 stars but I saw a lot of other choices for 3rd (Zipay thought Kreider) which is a good sign. Everyone contributing.

  27. Admiral Akbar on

Anyone hear from “Slatsko Folkyourself” lately?

    Didn’t think so.

  28. No Passengers on this boat. Everyone pick up an oar or find alternate passage.

  29. This quote is from an article in the Montreal Gazette this morning:

“Montreal scored the first goal of the game and was carrying the play when Ryan McDonagh, the defenceman the Canadiens gave away in the Scott Gomez trade, scored on a shot from the point, 17 seconds after Max Pacioretty scored the lone Montreal goal.”

When they mention Mac, they just can’t help but also mention that we got him in a trade for …. SCOTT GOMEZ… LOL!

    It never ceases to amuse.

  30. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

    Oleo @ 7:28am.

    No. Simply put…no!!!

The goalie disparity is HUGE and insurmountable. Barring major injuries it is hard to fathom a 6 or 7 game series here.

Face it. The Rangers haven’t even played their game yet. Hank has been astounding. They have had some good puck luck. They can be better. Then what?

  31. SeeeDubbb
Happy Birthday to your mom, ilb.
Yev, glad you are joining the go times, they add so much to the game for me and the more folks the merrier.

    May 20th, 2014 at 6:39 AM

Thanks SeeeDubbb! I actually think it made it easier to watch the game knowing how many people are as crazy as I am and as nervous as I am when watching the Rangers in the playoffs!

  32. Definitely have had more than a few “Ryan Callahan who?” moments over the last week or so. Not sure they even get out of round one if Sather had not made that trade.

  33. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

In all fairness, after game 4 last series, our team hit ‘rock bottom’ and all seemed over. Then whatever happened, happened, and this team started it’s roll.

One might say Montreal is at ‘rock bottom’ after losing first 2 at home? So, perhaps they can totally change their play and win a few?

Sorry, but without Price, though, the likelihood of them doing what we did is quite small.

  34. Matty"WhyNot!!"Boy on

When you think about Montreal vs. Penguins, there really is no ‘one’ or ‘two’ to fear. With Pens, Crosby, Malkin on the ice….watch out. That’s serious.

    This team? Subban? Vanek? Who?

They played great team hockey to get by Boston. They were the underdogs and did not expect it themselves. That was their season. As one reporter said, the season became a success with that PO win.

They are not a great team. They are beatable.

They know they are in the process of going down.

  35. Ranger-on-the-Isle on

That big Swedish kid can play some goal eh?

Montreal House of Horrs — CLOSED!

  36. Norm Merton on

Great write-up as always. The little things that get you through life. Though I have to say this morning my coffee sucked. Get on that, Carp.

I have only two boneheads of contention with this AM’s assessment.

    1) I don’t think the Habs are going to get any better. What they produced in the first period will get them a lead in 9 out of 10 games, and the Rangers are drunk if they think it’s not coming again to start Thursday’s game. They were a force, and Lundqvist isn’t going to stop that kind of onslaught every time.

    10) Stepan does not need to change his game. He has a good shot, not a great one, but he is a great passer. Soon after he passed when he should have shot last night (not my opinion) he was alone in the slot and did shoot, forcing a ‘meh’ save. When the goalie is squared up to you in the NHL you have to snipe it, pass it or shoot for a rebound. The extra pass to try for an open-net shot (e.g. Kreider to Nash) has about the same odds of success as trying to ping one in off the post or get a rebound off the goalie’s far-post pad.

  37. Manny-O-War on

Therrien makes some very baffling coaching decisions in my mind. I question Vigneault’s shift selection sometimes but Therrien matching 4th lines over and over and thus freeing up our 3rd line to make moves. Crazy talk.

  38. Why does everybody seem to forget Brian Boyle’s contributions in this series so far. Man he’s been super

  39. @Manny, on the note of matching 4th lines i didn’t get Therrien doing it down 2 with like 7 minutes left in the game. That one baffled me.

  40. The only matchup in the series that was alarming to me was Richards vs Paccioretty line.

Not only did it not burn us but now we get to get away from it, I’m stoked!

  41. Manny-O-War on

First goal is always crucial. Next best thing to scoring the first goal is scoring a goal :19 seconds after the other team scores the first goal.

  42. Gravy, Numero 0 might be coming down off the list. Is that even possible? He’ll be back up on top Game 1 next season, especially after he gets his four-year deal.

    Happy 26th momma ilb!

  43. schadenfreude: a feeling of enjoyment that comes from seeing or hearing about the troubles of other people

I thought you guys would truly appreciate a small smattering of the comments on the Habs GAME THREAD on the “Hockey’s Future” message board after McDonagh scored. (My personal favorite, comparing Scott Gomez to Herpes!)

    For your viewing pleasure: ENJOY!

    1.McDonaugh again. holy ****.

    Scott Gomez scores

3.And….that’s how you kill momentum…..from the new Habs killer.

    4.Well **** ****!

McDonagh. Of course. That trade is looking ****ing worse every game.

Doubly painful, fricking Gomez trade, and an awful response in space. Unlucky placement by Gorges, too, they’ve got to cover Moore and Pouliot a touch better and harder, to not allow those passes.

6.Scott Gomez is like herpes – gift that keeps on giving.

7.If McDonagh trade didn’t make you feel bad before…

    10. Bungling Bob Gainey with the trade that keeps on giving

11.McD outplaying Subban big time so far in this series

13.Bob Gainey must be the most incompetent GM there was, who in the right mind trades Ryan McDonagh in a deal for Scott Gomez?? Imagine our defense now, we would be killing: Markov, Subban, McDonagh, Gorges, Emelin, Tinordi, Beaulieu, Weaver

  46. @NYP_Brooksie

Kreider tells Post: “I thought [pre-game hubbub] was hilarious. It lit a fire under my ass that I don’t think is going away any time soon.”

  47. Just before Poilet had the brain spasm and took the stupid boarding penalty, I said to Sonny Boy, “Poileet is playing like a beast tonight.”

Then, with the blink of an eye, he was playing like a Beast of Burden.

  48. REPOST:

    Two things

This new playoff format is helping us a ton. Would’ve had to go through Montreal first, then either Boston or Pittsburgh in the second round and the other one in the ECF. So this path has helped out, but either way they look good.

Forget that Nash scored, his off the puck play has been so much better these last few games. I’ll still say that trade was poor until they win a cup, but he’s been handling himself so much better than many other players would if they were struggling (i.e. Crosby).

  49. I _want_ to be happy today. It’s just that I, too, would like that first round pick back.

  50. No question….Lundquist is team MVP

But The Kreider is the major factor in the teams turnaround.

Especially took note and loved the way he defended against Subban on the point late in the 3rd, it was like they were dancing step for step. Talk about frustration? Seemed like If Subban had a gun, he would have pulled it out and shot him.

  51. Is it a real quote from Kreider?? If so, I love it…

    Great writeup carp. like always.

One thing I thought about last night, I wanted to bring up here.

Ever since Kreider came back- the hagelin/richards/St. Louis has been producing. It was the first 3-some AV tried when they got MSL and it didn’t work, but he put them together starting in Game 4 against the Penguins and someone should look at their numbers to show how important its been for the Rangers.

    Huge factor

  52. Carp, you mentioned penalties, but I didn’t see any the whole game. I mean, NBC never showed them, so I assume they didn’t happen.

  53. @DownGoesBrown:

The Habs used three goaltenders in two games, all of whom gave up three goals or more. But the empty net had a shutout.

  54. The PP goal that MSL scored, that’s the MSL we thought we were getting from Tampa. That was a real beauty, not only the shot ( world class one-timer roofed to a top-corner past the screen – WOW) but the way he got himself positioned and free in the high slot before the pass.

  59. Manny-O-War on

    Exactly, Carp.

And even scarier, Habs writers are talking about the OFF SEASON MOVES

  66. _Gravy, Numero 0 might be coming down off the list. Is that even possible? He’ll be back up on top Game 1 next season, especially after he gets his four-year deal._

No way, Carp. The next time Boyle comes down on a two on one and doesn’t score = hands of stone, this guy stinks, etc.

Plus, I can’t change anything that might disrupt the *momentum*.

  67. Doodie Machetto on

I had it Lundqvist-McDonagh-Boyle, with honorable mentions to St. Louis, Girardi, and Nash. Dishonorable mentions to Klein, J.Moops, Stepan, and Pouoliot.

Lundqvist was amazing. And the McDonagh goal was absolutely huge. Honestly, not to much else to take away from that game other than we have to be a lot better in our zone in order to keep winning. Lundqvist can’t steal every game for us like he did last night.

Oh, and is there a worse team in the NHL with a goaltender pulled than us? We never score empty net goals, and I can’t remember the last time we scored a goal with Lundqvist pulled. We just absolutely suck in that situation.

  68. WBM (c)

  70. Somebody with Photoshop skills needs to supply us a pic of Bran the Broken hanging onto Boyle’s back.

  71. Any explanation why there is ONE game in 5 days and a total off day today for hockey? (Is it they don’t want to go up against The Voice finale? I wouldn’t put it past NBC to do something like that). I wish they could just do every other day so we have a game every night for this round.

  72. These last 5 games are part of an elaborate setup to tear our hearts out. Fully expect them to win Game 3 then lose four straight.

  73. THE Kreider: “Tokar, this is Ghost Kreider requesting a flyby.”
Tokar: “Negative, Ghost Kreider, the pattern is full.”
    THE Kreider: “BOOM!”

  74. THE KREIDER:” What’s your problem, Tokarsky?”
Tokarsky: “You’re everyone’s problem. That’s because every time you go out on the ice, you’re unsafe. I don’t like you because you’re dangerous.”
THE KREIDER: “That’s right! Ice… man. I am dangerous.”

  75. In the 1st period, Habs aggressively forechecked and force the Rangers to put the puck up the boards on the breakout, as the puck came up the boards, they attacked the puck aggressively by pinching their DMen and going 2 men to the puck. Rangers where hemmed in for long periods / shifts.

Rangers made an adjustment to their breakout starting with period 2. It turned the game around.

  76. Doodie Machetto on

Stepan was dreadful in his own zone and made really poor decisions on the rush. Yeah, he got the two assists, but I thought the first one was more Kreider’s pass to Nash and Tokarski not playing his angle well on that, and the second one was a good enough pass, but that was more about St. Louis finding a soft spot and absolutely crushing that shot.

Klein and Moore were just dreadful in their own zone.

I should have added Richards to the list of dishonorable mentions.

  77. Doodie, you’re reaching for ways to discredit those two assists. They were both parts of great passing plays.

  78. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

    Get your BROOMS ready boys!

    I smell a sweep.

Then a nice long nap until the finals start with Toews and Company.

I know, lots of hockey to be played in front of us. 120 minutes, 5 minutes at a time.

    10 Down 6 TO GO!!!

  79. I wouldn’t put the Rangers in the Final yet, let alone the Blackhawks. The West series has a long way to go.

  80. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

Hopefully the number one pick we traded away will be number -30- 29

  81. Nobody ever wanted the draft pick back now. If they don’t win the Cup, it would be nice to have it.

  82. At Sioux – Booby does

“I want to be happy today. It’s just that I, too, would like that first round pick back.” – May 20th, 2014 at 9:17 AM

  83. Gravy

We’re still going to look back at this conversation and laugh about how we were talking about offseason moves when the Rangers win the Cup.

    May 9th, 2014 at 2:01 PM

  84. It’s true. I don’t like winning and I love draft picks.

So I’m with Gravy. Let’s talk about the *offseason*

  85. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Lucic – “I will strangle you until you are dead, then shoot, stab, and chop you up”

  86. I know that comment by Booby is a 100% accurate assessment of his feelings on draft picks, and I approve this message.

  87. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

    Lots of Games to play…..

…. but was I the only one that went to bed last night and thought to myself….. WOW….. the Rangers are going to be playing for the Stanley Cup THIS YEAR (If they play like they have the last *5 Games*)

  88. At what point does Subban tell the post that Lundqvist isn’t God, like OvechCANT did?

I want a repeat of Game Tree 2007 vs Atlanta. Go back to the Garden and destroy them 7-0!

Atlanta thought they had a chance in that series. They lost two close games, then NYR dropped a load of diarrhea all over their confidence with that first win at the Garden.

    Do it again!

  89. Doodie Machetto on

Not really reaching on the first one, at all. A secondary assist for just dumping it over to Kreider when he entered the zone on a 3 on 2 isn’t exactly something to write home about.

  91. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

I was a fan of the trade for MSL. Even at his age, and we get him next year, plus I would think a couple of more, because he only wants to *be a Ranger*.

Unlike the Cally that left us…..

  92. Guess we watched different games, Doodie. From Stepan I see a forward that is covering for Kreider and Nash constantly. Covering for pinching Defenseman and making smart plays with the puck.

If I had a knock I might say that his neutral zone play was a bit poor on the decision making end.

  93. Anything under a seven game series would be nice, a sweep would be a dream. We should be thanking Boston for leaving these Nads with bruises on top of bruises.

  94. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Richards had a great play in the first keeping it in from the left point and throwing it towards the net. Perfect opportunity to score…problem tho, it was the Habs left point and it went toward the Ranger goal.

  95. I bet Pittsburgh fans went to bed on May 8th thinking they’d be playing in the ECF.

  96. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

The best part about walking to be last night….. Mrs. Sioux says don’t get your hopes up…..for the Stanley Cup…..

My brain and mouth respond “What team were you just watching”?

MRS. SIOUX ……… I checked out the tickets, I don’t think WE are going to make it.

LOL, I have such a great wife. She was already thinking of going to New York a second time.

Carp you were correct……. I out kicked my coverage :)

  97. This is truly enjoyable…After cally was traded my son was beside himself excited for st Louis. After 3 weeks. ..not so much. But now…you see that rocket from the slot that he’s done his whole career and it’s hard not to be confident in this team.
Honestly, I don’t believe there is any Ranger, coach included, that hasn’t picked up there game at least a little bit this post season. LGR!

  98. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

Now Gravy …… we are all allowed to dream when we go to sleep.

I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch…. but I see a house full of yellow fluffy chicks when I close my eyes.

  99. And I realize that this is slightly different because we have Lundqvist playing as good as he ever has, and Fleury still had a chance to Fleury. And, maybe I’ll even change my tune if they win Game 3. But we’ve been around this game too long to think anything is a lock.

    Just look back 10 days.

  100. Anybody want to make any changes to the lineup provided Brassard remains injured?

What if Pouliot gets a call from the league?

  101. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

When was the last time the Rangers had a *5 game* winning streak this year….. and heading home???

  102. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

Manny he isn’t going to get a call.

We’ve seen much worse….. remember Hagelin got 3 games :)

  103. Doodie Machetto on

“From Stepan I see a forward that is covering for Kreider and Nash constantly. Covering for pinching Defenseman and making smart plays with the puck.”

Any other game, that’s what I expect to see from him. I didn’t see it last night. Just a real howler, especially early.

  104. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

“I feel sorry for any team about to play in the ranger building right now”

    PK Subban

  105. Doodie Machetto on

If Brassard is out I’d keep the same lineup. If he’s in, then I sit Carcillo and go with our usual lineup.

  106. Manny-O-War

    May 20th, 2014 at 10:25 AM

Manny-o, where is the Albert audio? Do you have a link? Thanks.

  107. It was just played on NHL Radio. I can try to find one Yev.

Thanks for that list of Habs comments earlier!

  108. Doodie: EVERYONE on this team played horrible to start. If not for Hank the Habs would have run away with the game there.

  109. @NHLonTSN According to @DarrenDreger, expect the Vancouver Canucks to name Jim Benning as their new GM later this week. Hiring a coach will follow.

  110. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

    Leaders are LEADING this team!

Marty St. LOUIS & France have bonded this team.

McD – is shutting down the other team.

    Nash is scoring NOW.

Richards is light years ahead of last year.

Zucc – is the little engine that CAN.

    Hen-rik – is ALL WORLD.

This team is playing like THEY CAN!

No easy out here boys, I don’t care who they play in the west. (That said, I fear Chicago a little, they are THAT GOOD. THEY have WON 2 Cups, and they ARE the CHAMPIONS)

  111. Rangers have played the most games, but have given up the least goal per game:

    Rangers 2.06
    Blackhawks 2.15
    Kings 2.67
    Canadiens 2.77

They have, far and away, the best 5 on 5 ratio of 1.52 (GF divided by GA; Hawks 2nd at 1.27), and their special teams are now at respectable levels.

  112. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

    E3 – That’s right baby.

    Get your BROOM ready!!!

I have the *Sioux-per-sonic Sioux 1000* ready to rumble!

  113. Exactly, Manny. The team is no walkover, even without Price. And if they win Game 3, the complexion changes, and the ledge will be half full.

  114. Carp! I saw that slew foot too! I was yelling at the TV! No one mentioned it, I don’t think. Dirty, dirty play there.

  115. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

I even rode it to work today!

You should hear it snarl…. in low gear. It growls.

It looks a lot like THE KREIDER when he’s pissed :)

  116. One of the announcers mentioned the slew foot, but in such a way as to credit Weaver for clearing the front of the net.

  117. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

Now…. I expect the Habs to win a game….. but I’m not sure when :)

  118. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Hank is so deep in the *zone* that he’s already played, and won, Game 3, and is in the third period of game 4, up 5-0.

  119. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

WOW…..even Gravy showing some love for Mr. Dime a Dozen.

    Glad to see it.

  120. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

Rangers will win the next 6 games. Numbers 30, 27, and 5 will hang in the rafters someday.

  121. Sioux, I absolutely mancrush Boyle more than anyone on here and always have. The WBM (c) isn’t my personal feeling of the players.

  122. Unlike that idiotic tweet from Kyle Beech, here is a tweet from Prospect Anthony Duclair. (He scored 50 goals in the QMJHL)

With or without the KRISTO KID playing :)

  124. Great job Carp.
I can’t believe I’l be over in Europe for the next week & 1/2 during these best of Rangers times. FML!!

    Lets get #3 boys!

  125. Habs writers and fans (same thing) seem to be out on Le’ Ledge. I say they have their best games to come in this series. 2-0 lead or not this series isn’t close to over.

Doodie, I think AV has pressed all the right buttons. I trust whatever he does with the lineup.

  126. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Someone on this blog has an “a” in their name

    *I speak to dead people*

  127. “Is there a worse team in the NHL with a goaltender pulled than us?”

The primary goal of defending after the opponents’ goalie has been pulled is not to be scored on, not to score empty-netters. I’d want to see the team stat on goals allowed with the other goalie pulled. If the Rangers have been soft there, fair enough.

  128. SIOUX - Rangers in 4 on

Gravy – I did not know that. I thought you had a hard on against him for what ever reason.

Good to know. He should remain a RANGER.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t go all CALLY on us, or have PRUSTER “demands” at the end of the season.

  129. We should all remember what Gravy is saying.

This series could *EASILY* turn on a dime. Easily.

  130. Doodie Machetto on

Boyle is probably gone at the end of the season, and that goes double if we win the… hahahaha I can’t even finish that sentence because it’s so ludicrous to even think of.

  131. SIOUX - per - SWEEP on

So I will be working on the sweeper in the garage tonight. Ranger Blue and Siouxper Green, ready for action. Why have one broom when you can have TWO :)

  132. Yev: Great call. Totally lost in all that was that one of our top Prospects, DuClair, was in the building for the game. That’s cool

  133. SIOUX - per - SWEEP on

    Patty Cakes – start thinking….because it’s possible.

26 other teams …. not possible.

    Our team….. has a “punchers” chance :)

  134. I couldn’t care less about who’s on the cover of a video game. Isn’t that a curse?

  135. SIOUX - per - SWEEP on

Boys – I’d say to get your Hat Trick Picks in……

but they are NOT up yet?

    What’s with that?

  136. Sioux, I agree, the Rangers have a better chance to win the Cup than the 26 teams not in the playoffs anymore.

  137. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I’ve been carrying a broom since game 7 ended vs the Pens.

    Montreal, Quebec, Canada — >> (AP: May 20, 2014) 10:03 am ——-

Leaving the aeroport this morning, New York Ranger goalie, Henrik Lundquist, had his wrists, ankles, knees, elbows wrapped with cotton and gauze, then his entire body bubble wrapped twice over before being flown to New York City this morning. Two pillows were placed on each side of his head and tied together.
Mr. Lundquist is the goalie for the New York Rangers, currently 2-0 in their Eastern Conference Final Series in the NHL.

  140. Remember when we were down 1-3 to the Penguins? We came back. Who’s to say Les Habs can’t come back?

  141. Abe Froman, sausage king of Chicago on

If the Rangers win this thing, I am gonna let myself get so damn fat that I’ll need to wear a Rangers mumu

  142. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, the Montreal music director is pretty METAL. I heard Slayer and pre-suck Metallica multiple times.

  143. That’s awesome, Doodie. They were pumping *HELMET* last night also. I think *Booby* nailed that one

  144. Doodie Machetto on

I would like the Boyle shirt better if it was Inigo Montoya. Clever idea, wrong visage.

  145. Oh sorry, CCCP. Should we be talking about past seasons? That seems to be more *up your alley*

  146. CCCP, becaus:

And from now on, Torts is no longer an issue. Clearly, no competition. ;)

  148. SIOUX - per - SWEEP on

Good Job Eric. No NHL radio here.

Manny – yes there is a possibility the Habs could come back. That’s why they play the games.

Not this year, not tomorrow! Rangers have their foot on the gas, and they are NOT taking it off.

  149. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

Considering that it is the 20 year anniversary of 1994 I have heard very little chatter that it is the 20 year anniversary of 1994. Maybe when we make the Final?

    It’s a sign :)

  154. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

Well we don’t need to worry about LA. I don’t think they will get past Chicago. That said I would think LA would be the “easier” team if there is such a thing.

It would be fun to watch Gaborik play against the Rangers for the Stanley Cup.

  155. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

I really want to be in the building when the Stanley Cup is awarded to the Rangers this year :)

  156. The best of times, the worst of times.

Fellow Boneheads, I need your help. Three months ago, when I booked the family’s annual European vacation to start June 7th did I think I would be thinking “What was I thinking?”! So now, being the optimistic bloke that I am, I need to figure out how to watch the SCF games while I’m in Spain. What’s the most reliable to watch these games live while I’m there? You’ll be doing me and my daughter (19 and a HUGE fan) a big favor. We have an Apple laptop which will be our preferred way to view. All suggestions appreciated.

  157. Rangers looking to

Pens did it 13 games none have done 14 games

  158. bull dog line on

before we retire Hanks number, lets let him win 6 more games this year. right now is the best Hank has ever played, and he is going to have to play even better to win 6 more.

  159. Carp I hate to troll you, but Nash’s goal was a softy. MTL goaltender had no chance on the other two… good thing we have Henrik who is locked in!

  160. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

Heave Ho, streams all the games, but you need to enter your cable provider’s information for the games that are on cable (i.e. not on broadcast NBC). There could be regional restrictions so I’m not sure if it works overseas, but it does in the US.

  161. I really, really hate hearing all these writers burying the Habs. Same thing they did to us in Game 4 against Pitt.

  162. Robby Bonfire on

I wasn’t “Doom and gloom,” I was “Gloom and doom.” Savants know the difference.

  163. TSN Montreal, and KnuckleHead Nilan, thinks that the Habs made Hank’s life too easy.

  164. Knucklehead Nilan: “The only former team of mine I want to win is Montreal”

  165. Knucklehead Nilan: “The only good thing that could come from Vanek’s wicked slash to McDonagh’s hands was if he broke them and took out McDonagh”

  166. Really, a little ashamed of you guys. You should know better than to be talking about the finals or thinking beyond game 3. Have you not all spent your entire lives as Ranger fans?

  167. Those are *REAL* quotes (albeit paraphrased as I typed them right after he said them) by the way. I’m not doing a joke JR thing. These are thinks that Knucklehead Nilan actually said on TSN

  168. Peter, I know you’re right, we’ve all seen it before. I’m slightly allowing myself to dream it, and every time I do, I shut it down and think, it only happens to other teams.

    Why not us?

  169. Rob, Thanks. NBC online stream only available in the States. Still looking for access to the SCF in Spain.

  170. bull dog line on

saw the video of Prust try to accidentally on purpose bump to Hank. what a hump Prust is.

  171. Peter, couldn’t agree with you more. Been a Ranger fan too long to be duped into a false sense of security.

Though…have to say, watching yesterday’s game was a pleasure. Usually when the Rangers are hanging on to a lead, they dump the puck and weather surges from the other team. Yesterday, they skated it out and kept it in the other team’s zone. Perhaps it was the benefit of a 2-goal lead, but haven’t seen them do that it a long time.

Very impressed with the 4th line. Played much better than I expected.

  172. Heave ho:

Type into google something along the lines of “Hide my IP address” and you will get instructions that will allow you to watch US content overseas. Did the same thing while visiting my in-laws in Australia to watch Netflix.

    Good luck.

  173. Manny-O-War on

There are a million years of history that go against the “Why Not Us” thinking

  174. Doodie Machetto on

Assuming the Rangers win this series, who goes to not touch the Prince of Wales?

  175. Doodie Machetto on

Yes, certainly the Rangers have never made an untested backup look amazing. That’s not the MO of the franchise in any way, shape, or form.

  176. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

_Assuming the Rangers win this series, who goes to not touch the Prince of Wales?_

Pouliot or Kreider will probably hoist the thing

  177. Richards I think gets assigned the accepting trophy responsibility…though that is a LONG way away (both PoW and Le CS)

  178. Instead of booing THE, the Habs fans oughta be booing Bob Gainey. Long and lustily.

  179. Lloyd Braun on

Rangers had faced Tokarski before and lit him up. The kid has no big game experience (no matter how much that nitwit McGuire wants to talk about his junior career) and the Rangers are firing on all cylinders.

  180. Doodie Machetto on and are usually my go to sites when trying to live stream sports.

  181. Manny-O-War on

That was in *2010* Lloyd. Don’t see what relevance that has to last night’s game.

Tokarski has excelled at every level so far. Not just Juniors but also AHL.

  182. Thanks to Mickman and Norm (shhhh). Enjoy the ride! Hope I can join you starting next month.

  183. Doodie Machetto on

Lloyd, it was like 4 years ago, just after the kid became a pro. He’s been in the AHL for the past few years and won a Calder Cup.

The biggest knock against him isn’t what we’ve done against him, it’s what he’s done in the NHL in general. Seems like a good AHL goaltender, but not NHL-level. Think Jason Labarbera.

  184. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

I was reading a Habs forum last night and they were talking about Tokarski like he was a career AHLer bust. It was probably ledge talk, but the guy has been in the AHL since 2009 and has 7 career NHL starts in that time.

  185. Manny-O-War on

Usually I like to rag on Doodie and ruffle his feathers but what he just said is *SPOT ON*

  186. Manny-O-War on

Also, the Tokarski narrative isn’t over. He hadn’t played a game in over a month. Now that he’s got the game pace going he might be better.

He’s been good on the road this season in the NHL.

The only goal he had a chance at was the Nash goal.

  187. Manny-O-War on

Actually, Lloyd should know a lot about Tokarski because he played *Juniors* for so long. Maybe he faced him.

  188. Rob in Beantown, 100-Watt Warlock on

I played juniors for four years, but only if you count Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey for N64 as *juniors*.

  189. Doodie Machetto on

It was three in under 25 minutes, in relief of Niitymaaki in a blowout.

  190. Doodie Machetto on

So Carp played in juniors, but the players in the CHL play in junior.

  191. Norm Merton on

I’ll rephrase: except by guys who play in Juniors, eh. It’s called “slang”.

  192. I wonder if Lloyd’s Junior-s- coach called him an idiot a lot, and he projected that here.

  193. I am seriously on the ledge of taking Prust off the list of former players I continue to like after leaving team. I know the guy has a job to do, and this is a business, but seriously….he is ticking me off.

He takes his gloves off and he will be the new piece of prust.

  194. Why in only hell is my comment awaiting moderation? I didn’t even say hartnell…

  195. SIOUX-per-SWEEP on

I think when the Rangers are firing on all cylinders, and play to the potential of ALL it’s players.

It really doesn’t matter who’s in Goal for the other team. Rangers will win more than they will lose. Now when Hank is ALSO playing AT THE TOP of his game, how does the other team even have a chance?

  196. Lloyd Braun on

seriously how good is Brandon Prust you guys must all want him back like asap

  197. Manny-O-War on

Didn’t notice him Akbar. He must not be going to the dirty areas anymore. Maybe he’s scared due to a head injury

  198. Doodie Machetto on

I thought the KINGS/HAWKS game was tonight.

  203. Manny, all that shows me is that Hank has *no goals* the last three years. How can they expect to win the Cup?

  204. Matty"WhyNot!!!"Boy on

So, call me arrogant. I totally remember the repulsive feeling of the Rangers losing what was one of the worst playoff games ever a week ago Wednesday to go down 3-1 to Pitt. I remember the futility. That wretched feeling. It WAS over.

I fully realize Montreal could come back like the Rangers did.

Yet, sorry. I just don’t see it. Not without Price. Not after a 7 gamer with Boston.

Could happen. I just don’t see it. Nope. Nada.

  205. Matty"WhyNot!!!"Boy on
