From the NHL:

PENGUINS, RANGERS VIE FOR EASTERN CONFERENCE FINAL BERTH IN GAME 7
NEW YORK (May 12, 2014) — The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers will
decide their Eastern Conference Second Round series on Tuesday night in Game 7 at
Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center (7 p.m., ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS). The winner will
advance to the Eastern Conference Final and face the winner of the Second Round series
between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens.
These teams have never met in a series-deciding showdown but are no strangers to
Game 7s in recent years.
The Rangers will be contesting a Game 7 for the fifth time in their past seven playoff
series since 2012. Having eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers in seven games in the First
Round, New York will attempt to post Game 7 wins in consecutive series for the second time
in that span; they defeated the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals in the 2012
Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and Semifinals, respectively.
The Penguins will be contesting their fifth Game 7 in the past six playoff seasons and
their first since dropping a 1-0 decision to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 Eastern
Conference Quarterfinals. Five Penguins have appeared in each of Pittsburgh’s four Game 7s
since 2009: goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, defensemen Kris Letang and Brooks Orpik,
and forwards Craig Adams and Chris Kunitz.
The Rangers have won four consecutive Game 7s and are 7-1 in their past eight such
games. The club also is attempting to win a best-of-seven playoff series it trailed 3-1 for the
first time in franchise history, a comeback with a historical success rate under 10% in the NHL
(26-246, .096).
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has won four consecutive Game 7s, tied for the
NHL record with Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour and Cam Ward. Center Brad Richards has an
unblemished Game 7 record, going 6-0 in winner-take-all games since 2004, while teammate
Dominic Moore will attempt to post his third Game 7 win at Pittsburgh since 2010 — all with a
different club. Moore scored once and posted a +2 rating in Montreal’s 5-2 win in the 2010
Eastern Conference Semifinals — the final game played at Mellon Arena — and earned the
primary assist on the game-winner by Sean Bergenheim in Tampa Bay’s 1-0 win in the 2011
Eastern Conference Quarterfinals — the first Game 7 contested at CONSOL Energy Center.
Other Game 7 Notes
* Home teams are 91-61 (.599) in 152 Game 7s all-time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
* The team that scores first is 112-40 (.737).
* 38 Game 7s have required overtime (38-of-152, 25.0%). Home and road teams are 19-19.

  1. _Here’s an actual stat. In the 13 games I previously mentioned, Bjorn’s Save % is .859 and his GAA is 4.26._

These stats are fabricated or grossly miscalculated.

  2. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Great job by the NHL taking a wavering stance on spearing players in the onions.

  3. Here’s some *actual* stats. In the last 13 games the Rangers have led a series, Hank is 0-13 (well known) with a 3.44 GAA and an .882 SV%.

If you take out the disaster of a series in 08-09 against the Caps, he has a 2.92 GAA and a .897 SV% in the last 10 games.

The Rangers have averaged 1.46 GPG in those 13 games.

  4. Obviously a lot of player overlap in game 7s, particularly as Rangers, but the common denominator for almost all of the games is Hank. This is his time to shine. Take the boys to the East finals, Hank. I don’t know how I’m gonna function tomorrow until game time.

  5. The thing is I actually read it word for word which delays things. Reading always gets in the way!

  6. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

_The Rangers have averaged 1.46 GPG in those 13 games_

    That’s good right? Like Golf.

  7. Hi Alan, you appear to be “new” here, so you can see where the conversation started two threads back.

  8. Rob in Beantown on

Arguably the Rangers have been good in the games they won and bad in the games they lost.

  9. Norm Merton on

Are we seriously arguing whether Lundqvist is good enough to win a Cup? Seriously?

  10. Pacioretty bring called out in Montreal. Can we steal him
Away like we did Mac. Bob gainey day is June 30th don’t forget

  11. _Are we seriously arguing whether Lundqvist is good enough to win a Cup? Seriously?_

Name just _one time_ when Henrik stepped up and bailed his offense out by scoring a goal.

  12. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I was really hoping Hank would take a shot at the empty net last night.

  13. I guess they didn’t fine Hank because they didn’t want the backlash for not fining Crosby.

  14. bull dog line on

    MrD,
I have understood what you are saying from the time you posted it, and I still don’t understand your thinking. preferring to lose a round earlier because of a 1st round pick makes no sense to me. winning game 7 against Pitt would be so worth a 1st round pick, even if Boston swept them in the next round. enjoy the playoff runs. they don’t come around as much as you think.

  15. Is that discussion still going on? We’re all trading the 1st round pick for a win tomorrow.

  16. I don’t know if this subject has been addressed today but check out the Pittsburgh writer(dejan kovacovic, spelling?) who put out the ranger hate in his articleblog….he’s down on them, but the comments section has the penguin fans really down on them all, even sid the kid….kinda makes me feel good that they have ledges in other cities

  17. *If* the Rangers make it to the ECF and *if* the Bruins are there, they will not lose in 5 or less.

  18. Think about it in a different, positive way: if they lose their first round pick, they get to keep their second rounder :-)

  19. bull dog line on

I think they lost there 2nd rounder if they are ahead, or tied after the 1st period of game 7. if they are behind it becomes a 3rd rounder.

  20. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I have really come to dislike Lucic and REALLY dislike Thornton.

But man, that *Penguins vs. Bruins* series is gonna have JUICE

  21. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

As *GRAVY TRAIN* already pointed out: @TSNResearch: NYR have won one game 7 on the road, ever. One year ago tomorrow in WSH

  22. ThisYearsModel on

Forget the first rounder. The best it could be would be #26 if the Rangers advance. I hate trading first rounders too, but in this case get us to the conference finals.

  23. ThisYearsModel on

If the Rangers advance, here will be CARP’s prediction: Boston in 5. You read it here first.

  24. Lundqvist:
“I think momentum swings happen during the games but between games, it feels like you start over every time. Now we go into their building and you go out there with a new, fresh feeling. So whatever happened yesterday is gone. It’s whatever you decide to do tomorrow, the mindset you go in there, you start, you want to try and set the tone. Every game is different.”

  25. I think me and Richie and Kevin Lowe and Mess banged it into his head. Amongst us we have 13 Stanley Cup rings and a couple of Conn Smythes.

  26. Didn’t Asham and Del Zaster have big games for NYR vs Washington game 7 last year. We’re scrwed without them.

  27. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

    Oh
    My
    God

CROSBY & MALKIN MET WITH REPORTERS!

Why is everyone freaking out about this?

  28. I watched the Washington Game 7 at a bar in Morristown, NJ and part of me thinks I need to go there tomorrow. The other part of me thinks it was a miserable place for a hockey game and knows I won’t really go.

  29. Lundqvist said today that he thinks they won Game 7 in D.C. because you were at that bar in Morristown, Mister.

  30. Technically that was Dom Moore’s handiwork but Crosby gets the primary assist.

  31. That being the case, I’d like to present exhibit A in the case for resigning him.

  32. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I’m kind of torn on beating up on LeTang because of that whole stroke thing. I don’t know why he gets himself involved in that.

  33. Mister D
I just rewound and it looks like Moore got a couple nice jabs in on Letang. Twitter says that all started because Crosby crosschecked Boyle from behind at 20:00 then bolted.

    May 11th, 2014 at 9:49 PM

  34. If that were Dorsett (or Carcillo), maybe, but I feel pretty confident Dom Moore was being reactive, not proactive.

  35. Funny, MSG showed the opposite. It was Henrik celebrating that he wouldn’t have to play from ahead again next game then you saw Boyle getting shoved out the door and a big scrum where Moore worked in 4 or 5 major uppercuts. Then Crosby came back once the refs had all arrived and it was safe.

  36. I hadn’t see the Letang carnage until just now but I would looooooove to think that Lemieux was scolding 87 for his repeated hit and runs that leave his teammates eating the retaliation. That would be last night’s cherry on top.

  37. Heads!!!
Late to the party as usual, some great stuff today. Pretty excited for tomorrow night, and of course by excited I mean terrified. That said, awfully proud of our boys, they deserve this game 7. Honestly, it’s time to make this series the one where we climb out of the hole and peak over the top.

    I like our chances.

  38. Robby Bonfire on

I saw some dumping on Callahan in the previous posting. Not too happy with that. Cally stepped up and was the de facto captain of this team, when Drury was either injured, malingering, or moonlighting selling pizza – take your pick.

Cally’s promotion to captain was virtually a unanimous selection. He gave his heart and soul here. Not giving up the hope that we can, somehow, reacquire his services.

  39. @MolinariPG

Is Evgeni Malkin channeling Mark Messier? A short time ago, he told reporters, “We know we can win tomorrow, and we’ll do it.”

They must be making that up. If Malkin spoke in English, they’d never be able to translate that.

“We kna we cah ween tomahramow eh we dut”

  40. More like THE Kentucky Fried POULET.

I bet he converts all his frequent offensive-zone penalty miles into free KFC value meals.

Watch that clown cost us Game 7.

  45. Great to read the pens blog. Losers.

Not like all the cool kids that hang out here.

    Game Seven People!!

  46. Also, Carp. Congrats for running a clean and tight ship here. Reading some of the others, the foul language certainly detracts from experience. While I may talk like a longshoreman, I don’t like to read like one.

    No offense to longshoreman.

  47. iManny-O-War on

Even the Pens fans are distracted. Calling for Engelland and Glass to get in the lineup. Slow them down even more.

  48. BickelsPickle on

Despite our theory on momentum, would you rather be going into game 7 on a 2 game winning or losing spree?

  49. Pre game in Montreal is insane. Want a game 7.

Should we win I root for habs in 7

We lose I root for bruins in 7.

  50. Olga Folkyerself on

I thought she was kinda old Eric, but I don’t know your situation…

  51. iManny-O-War on

Boston has a lot of trouble with this speed game of the Habs. Who are really fast

  52. How in hell can rangers ever win in the house of horrors in a conf final if we both pulled upsets. Never would

  53. What a save by Rask!

Imagine if The Good One played like Gallagher. It’s such a slap in the face to small guys like Gallagher, MZA, and others for a guy with his size and skill to play the way he does.

  54. iManny-O-War on

Yea Nash seriously takes it for granted

Playing Talbot in Montreal would mess Up Hank’s Conn Smythe

  55. That’s alright, they’re going to give the Conn Smythe to D Moops anyway.

  56. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

AV, though loathe to admit it, was likely pinning Dorsett to the bench because of the refs would have called Dorsett , 2 minutes breathing. That crew was atrocious.

  57. iManny-O-War on

I don’t know, Eric. I think the Pens will have trouble with the Habs speed

  58. holy cow. The pittsburgh media contingent is such a dumb brand of homerism. The articles in since game 3 have been unprofessional and amateurish, and scrolling the twitter feed just now, seeing the picture they want to portray, made me decide to write this.

Its weird man in an unnerving way, how bad and obvious and how poorly its done, just like everything about how that organization does things. (the cheapness, the tanking, the whininess of its stars, their tv coverage, their fare weather fans, the media coverage, the league bias) Its such a weaselly organization, its impossible to have any admiration for how they do things.

And shame on these writers (giving them credit here) to think the fans they serve should be taken for that dumb and gullible. Seriously Carp, you should do these guys a favor and try to save their careers. On the way to the door at the end of the night, be real with them, you’ve been in the business for a long time, its their choice if they want to ignore you. But they are shilling and destroying their own credibility for a hockey team from pittsburgh (a town I love).

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

After BSing for too long you lose a grasp of what is and isn’t BS. And at that point your integrity is gone.

  59. iManny-O-War on

Maybe Lucic can sit on the bench and flex again. That guy has gone way down in my book.

  60. AV said that with all the special teams, Dorsett sat for a long time and then AV was hesitant to put him out there. Or as his predecessor would have said, “I lost Dorsett.”

Plus I think he tried to double-shift Nash a bit because he had some jump, and maybe to try to get some chances vs. MAF while using D. Moops vs. Skidney.

but, no, Dorsett was not hurt, the coach insisted.

  61. iManny-O-War on

Nash did have at least one shift on the 4th line. I thought it was because he was being more defensively responsible than offensively inclined.

  62. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I think that Hank is going to pitch a shutout. He is really in the zone. Some of his best work has been these playoffs, particularly this series. There are some, me included, that think paying a goalie huge $$$ isn’t prudent. But tomorrow, Game 7, is when it’s one game for all the marbles, I am damn glad we have the King whereas the Pens have the guy Pierre wants to kiss on the mouth.

    Rangers 5
    Pens 0

    GWG Brassard. Nash scores two.

  63. Nash what a loser. Played hard however that shift where he tried to carry puck on pk then broke his stick I almost ran onto the ice after him

  64. but then you guys would know that if you listened to all the audio put up by a couple guys working really hard after games :)

  65. You pay your best player the most money. That’s how it should be. 30 is their best player, by far. Not even remotely close.

  66. I think the reason for Nash and Crosby’s struggles- are one in the same. Playing to protect their noggin.

  67. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

    Brassard is a close second.

    Ranger’s best players:

    1. Hank
    2. Brassard
    3. McDunner

  68. Malkin could win on his own with Pittsburgh.

If I were Penguins, Id go with Malkin. Malkin, the rest of that roster, and the haul they would get for Crosby. It would allow them to have balance offensively and defensively. They are so top heavy right now and also I think each player’s effectiveness is diminished by trying to share and co-exist.

  69. My dream scenario still alive beat flyers win game 7 in Pitt then win a game 7 in Montreal the house of horrors.

Rangers would deserve cup after that

  70. I just don’t see the pens bias from Pierre…maybe I’m just missing it tho.

  71. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If the rangers can get a fast jump, score two goals. early, we might get to watch MAF have a nervous breakdown right on the ice.

Just can’t see Hank losing this game. Just don’t see it happening.

  72. bull dog line on

re watched the game earlier today. Nash actually had a real good game. finishing his checks, and skating. he is getting closer to breaking out.

  73. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Wicky – I’ve heard the microphone feed pick up Pierre, at least three times, say “I want to kiss Kristopher LeTang on the mouth”

  76. “Imagine if The Good One played like Gallagher. It’s such a slap in the face to small guys like Gallagher, MZA, and others for a guy with his size and skill to play the way he does.”

Gallagher sure looked like The Good One there.

Gravy – other fans are far too stupid to figure out what we are talking about…

  79. Gravy, a lot of opposition blogs link to some Blueshirt Banter blog for NYR views. I think we may be on the down low.

  80. RANGERS’ LUNDQVIST FINED FOR UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
NEW YORK (May 12, 2014) — New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been
fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 6 of the Second Round Stanley Cup
Playoffs series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in New York on Sunday, May 11, the National
Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 20:00 of the second period. No penalty was assessed to Lundqvist.
The fine money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

  81. We’d probably run the visitors out of town if they came to this blog. Or they’d run away in fear.

  82. @rangersreport

Lundqvist spanked for a couch-cushion change fine of $5,000 by the NHL for squirt-gate.

    @rangersreport

Department of Player Safety can’t have guys knocking other players’ eyes out with water. Use your stick, dammit.

    @rangersreport

As I said earlier, the water squirt was about the 157th worst thing that happened in Game 6. NHL=idiots.

    @MolinariPG

That squirt directed at Crosby in Game 6 is far from the most significant cold water Lundqvist has thrown on the Penguins lately.

    @rangersreport

Just an aside. I imagine Lundqvist will consider that among the best $5,000s he’s ever spent.

    @rangersreport

Guy gets haircuts that cost more than that.

    @rangersreport

I don’t think my car is worth what Lundqvist pays for a haircut, and he gets those every few weeks. My car: ’02.

  83. A part likes to think we have our own little niche here. Another thinks there’s a lot of comedy gold that needs to be out there.

  84. Good evening all!

Sorry if I’m late to news, but…

So hank got fined stupid couch change…worth it, I think he’d say, for the act…but did Sid get anything too??? Hartnelling league

  85. @Dave_Stubbs

NHL decided to use $5,000 for Lundqvist fine because that’s the cost of restaurant bottled water in NYC

  86. Carp

You’re hilarious! Those tweets are priceless lol

I hope Crybtch gets killed by the Rangers tomorrow.

Gravy – I used a sharpie to mark all of my shirts, #16. Front and back.

I’m also thinking of a full body tattoo #16. Head to toe

  88. iManny-O-War on

Nash really is the last guy waiting to score.

Pacioretty at 40 for the season now

  89. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ricardo – I have noticed that Brassard often finds himself as one of your three stars ;)

And today, more nice words….as there has been for awhile from you ;)

You must mention to him that THE KEEEVI thinks Brassard may be the best player in the game today.

  90. Sneaky play by Vanek.

If we advance, i’d rather play the Bruins cause hank flat out sucks in Montreal.

  91. Robby Bonfire on

Back in 1979, a superior Montreal team overcame a stubborn Boston team, in the final minutes, to get to the finals, and a Cup victory over the Rangers.

When Boston was leading, late in that Montreal seventh game, I said to myself – “Boston holds on, Rangers will win the Cup. Montreal comes back and wins, Montreal beats the Rangers.” And of course, that is how it went.

Now I find myself rooting for Montreal in their Boston series, because I think we Ranger fans would go into a Montreal series with a strong expectation of winning that trip to the Finals. Beating Boston on top of outlasting Pittsburgh in seven games IF we do, is going be a tall order, probably too tall. I think Montreal will look like a drop in class, compared with Pittsburgh, and we know Boston has the goods to go all the way this year.

So let’s hope Montreal upsets Boston because it really sets up for the Pittsburgh – Rangers survivor, quite nicely, if it comes to pass.

If all of us contribute some money and we raise $5000 can we spray Crosby with water too?

Robbie – I too would rather face the Habs. Bruins look slow, and I think the rangers speed would be a plus, but man do they hit and pound the body. Habs are also finishing their checks….but I think we beat the Habs with less flesh extracted..

I must point out tho, if any Ranger did whack Crosby in the penis, you’d also be wacking Pierre on the mouth.

    Kenny mentions the king
Pierre wants to say he’d love to kiss MAF on the mouth

Louie just said something about tickets for Bruins/Rangers Wed. Night.

    We’re cursed.

  97. Nice usage of “Dirty Deeds” in MTL! Although I wish the organist had piped it out.

  98. sheeeeeeeeeeesh!!
just come back from a nice dinner with mom-in-law
    and jpg’s wife
    and
then i find out about the horse-cooke fine on Hank

any pens fan that say that their team doesn’t receive preferential treatment should be laughed at….LOUDLY!!!!!

  99. btw
the only good thing about viewing/bookmarking the Puck Daddy write up on Hank’s fine
is that the video goes back far enough that you can see cindy attempt to circumcise D Moore
    and
his multiple crosschecks on the Ranger before getting pulled off and
    then squirted by Hank

  100. @rangersreport

    Lundqvist squirts water: $5,000.
Emery beats the crap out of a goalie who doesn’t want to fight: $0.
    NHL Player Safety: Priceless.

  101. I know it’s petty and I don’t care, but the difference is Hank squirted when the play was dead period over for about a minute, Thornton squirted in the middle of a live play”……………anyone, anyone. Bueller?

  102. Makes no sense welcome to Bettboys NHL, surprised we haven’t had a outdoor playoff series yet……..the fans like it! UGH

  103. Thanks, Eric. It’s crazy though, if they go seven it won’t end until Sunday?

  104. no
    the difference is that
the bruin did it against a player
    hated
    while
    Hank did it to
    gary’s golden child

  105. History is just that, history. Time for the boys to write a new chapter. Sixty minutes like the last two games and I like our chances.
