Game 5: Rangers at Penguins tonight (7 p.m.) … pre-game notes

First, condolences to the St. Louis family. In case you missed it, Martin St. Louis’ mother, France, passed away suddenly Thursday. She was 63.

As you prepare for Game 5, click here for my story on tonight’s game.

• Henrik Lundqvist is tied for 5th in wins (five), ranks 5th in GAA (2.27), and 5th in SV% (.915)
• Ryan McDonagh is 6th in blocked shots (26)

The Rangers have won seven of their last nine playoff games when facing elimination, including two of four road games, dating back to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Apr. 23, 2012 at Ottawa. Henrik Lundqvist has posted a 7-2 record, along with a 1.43 GAA, a .951 SV%, and 2 SO in his last nine games when the Blueshirts have faced elimination, including a 2-2 record, a 1.75 GAA, a .943 SV%, and 1 SO in his last four road contests when facing elimination.

The Blueshirts allowed 15 shots on goal in Game 3 vs. PIT on May 5, including one shot on goal in the third period. It was the second time in this year’s playoffs that the Rangers allowed 15 shots on goal in a game and one shot on goal in period (Game 1 vs. Philadelphia on Apr. 17). Prior to this postseason, the last time the Rangers allowed 15 shots on goal in a playoff game was Apr. 25, 1974 at PHI. The last time New York allowed one shot on goal or less in a period was May 7, 1994 at WSH (0 shots on goal allowed in the third period). The Blueshirts have held their opponents to 30 shots on goal or less in eight of 11 playoff contests this year, including all six playoff games at MSG. The Rangers rank second in the NHL in shots against per game (26.5) in the playoffs.

Derick Brassard, Benoit Pouliot, and Mats Zuccarello have a total of 18 points (9 G, 9 A) in eight regular season and playoff games against PIT this season. Brassard (3 G, 2 A) and Zuccarello (3 G, 4 A) have tallied a point in five of eight regular season and playoff games against PIT, while Pouliot (3 G, 3 A) has recorded a point in four of the eight meetings.

Henrik Lundqvist established two franchise records during the 2013-14 season, becoming the Rangers’ all-time wins leader with his 302nd career victory on Mar. 18 at OTT, and the team’s all-time shutouts leader with his 50th career shutout on Mar. 22 at NJD. The Rangers goaltender is tied for fifth in wins (five), ranks fifth in GAA (2.27) and SV% (.915) in the playoffs. Lundqvist has started a franchise-record, 77 consecutive playoff games, dating back to Apr. 26, 2006 vs. NJD. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Lundqvist’s streak is only the seventh time in NHL history that a goalie has started at least 70 consecutive playoff games for one team. Lundqvist passed Mike Richter for first on the team’s all-time playoff appearances list in Game 3 vs. Pittsburgh on May 5.

The Rangers have reached the second round of the playoffs for the third straight season. The Blueshirts are one of two teams – and the only Eastern Conference team – to win a playoff series in each of the last three seasons. The last time the Rangers reached the second round of the playoffs in at least three consecutive seasons was a four-year span from 1993-94 – 1996-97.

The Rangers improved to 7-5 in 12 Game 7s in franchise history with their 2-1 victory against the Flyers on Apr. 30, and they have won all six Game 7s they have played at MSG in franchise history. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Blueshirts are the only NHL team to be undefeated at home in Game 7s in franchise history (minimum of three Game 7s played at home).

Dan Girardi is tied for eighth among NHL defensemen in assists (four) and 10th in points (five) in the playoffs. Girardi skated in his 71st career playoff game on Apr. 30, passing Mark Messier and Jeff Beukeboom for sixth place on the Rangers’ all-time playoff games played list.

  1. MUST WIN!

I know the team can’t play any worse than Wednesday, can they?

  2. Miami Pimp on

    These court jesters are done.

NASH scores a hat trick, but Crosby scores four and Pens take it 4-3.

  3. Matty"Rangersin5!!"Boy on

again, condolences to the MSL family. She apparently was ill for a long time. RIP.

  4. Matty"Rangersin5!!"Boy on

Two years in a row that ‘huge’ move by the “best gm in hockey” at deadline’s end, resulting in loss of top draft picks and picking up an old ‘great’ player, flopped. Absolutely flopped.

When you actually DO have a team that’s close and a big deal can put you over (aka, Boston/Iginla, LA/Gaborik, NY in 1994/Anderson, MacT,Larmer, etc.), THAT”s when you do it.

Not when your team is put together like crap, with no balance, and no apparent REALISTIC shot. Because then, it’s a waste of multiple high draft picks.

That would be called fleecing or destroying organizational depth and only amateurs would do it.

And, of course the team making that trade needs to be able to evaluate their chances. Realistically.

  5. Matty"Rangersin5!!"Boy on

No doubt our leaders will step up tonight.

    Richards, Nash.

  6. Admiral Akbar on

Tough year for St. Louis. My thoughts and condolences are with Marty and his family. Another cruelty of the cycle of life.

  7. Admiral Akbar on

I really like St. Louis – but maybe Former Captain Callyhan should have been traded for draft picks?

  8. Matty"Rangersin5!!"Boy on

Spider, the smart guys, who had actually been watching them from up close, not reading results in the papers, picked them, in uh… lose in 5.

    See archive.

  9. ThisYearsModel on

Sather is the culprit. While in the act of failing to assemble a winning team, he also squanders draft picks. Bondy is a nob, but he got this one right.

  10. First, condolences to MSL, we may all be upset with his hockey performance but never would ever wish bad on him in personal life.

Second, Good morning heads I hope the season continues!

Third: I actually think from a balance perspective this team is relatively well put together. We have the ability to roll 4 lines and 3 d pairs through most games

our flaming out has to do with our top players not performing up to par, not a lack of balance.

when you build a team you need to expect everyone to play up to their role. When you have first line players like Nash and MSL not playing up to their projected ability, it puts strain on everyone below them to perform above theirs.

for most of the season lack of top end production play from our big guys was “masked” by the ability for people like Zucc to over perform expectations. Eventually, and we’re seeing this right now, you need your big dogs to be big dogs.

On paper i think sather did a pretty reasonable job assembling what looks like a team that should be a contender. We have some top name talent, some young talent and some heart and soul guys. Mix that with a top flight goalie and an emerging superstar d-man and that is a recipe for success. Again, on paper.

Nash & Msl being blanks in the playoffs, McD being clearly hurt and the “next level” that Pitt is able to get to when pressed have shown the cracks.

  11. That’s terrible news about Marty’s mom!! Being a professional athlete is no solace, he’s gotta be hurtin right now and perhaps, for a few weeks now. Tough for him right now I would imagine. As far as our boys and relying on team leadership, is everyone as sick as I am of the quotes coming out of Richards’ mouth? Isn’t he AV’s defacto captain? “That’s one game in the last 30, or probably 40, that we played that bad all over the ice,” Really Cap, how does that happen in a basically must win? Nice leadership!!!

  12. And I don’t know what’s worse, seeing how his leadership isn’t helping this team or the fact that Sather will NOT buy him out this summer?

  13. Awful news for MSL. If he does play, I hope he rocks it and if he doesn’t, I hope there’s no garbage from anyone about what a “big game” it was that he missed.

  14. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I’m not complaining about how anyone plays tonight. The Season is *over*

  15. My thoughts and condolences go out to Martin St. Louis and his family. One of the saddest moments in anyones life.

Win one for Marty and give him the opportunity to honor his mom on mothers day in front of his family

  16. Season ended Wednesday night. There will be no throwing of anything. I won’t be any more dejected at 930 tonight then now. All I ask is compete.

  17. “Hey, is that Manny the Rangers fan? I think less of him today because of the Rangers poor performance last night.” – Manny’s coworkers

  18. Stranger Nation on

_our flaming out has to do with our top players not performing up to par, not a lack of balance_

a different more realistic view is our ‘top players’ are not top players, but shiny new toys that Slatapus brings in for regular season marketing, but not playoff performance.
If we get to 2nd round, he seems to have done his job. It’s just the coach who is held to the Cup standard.

Would a line of Anisimov – Dubi – Cally have performed better…way I think so because they would not have given up the goals.
Would the PP be better, probably not. As it stunk when those guys were there, but at least we would have seen full out effort and not No contact Ice Capades at MSG.

  19. Even if they didn’t perform better, Stranger, they would have busted it all 200 feet so I wouldn’t be as annoyed. Poor effort, shying away from the tough spots, that kind of stuff is the worst when the goals aren’t coming.

  20. Manny’s been watching Crosby too much this past week.

“hey Manny, how was your weekend?”

    Manny: “WAA”

  21. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I definitely think this team is *RICH* with redundancy and *POOR* in Balance.

  22. I’m with Drax, if anything we’ve proven balance throughout the season and playoffs. Our bottom 6 is consistently having better shifts than our top 6 which is probably our biggest problem. We could be alive in this series with our bottom 6 netting 3 goals in 4 games. We’re not because our top 6 is 1 behind.

  23. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Yea. I was just hanging with Crosby. We had a few Hard Ciders. Strawberry Cider.

  24. My wife, thinks that we will win the next 2 (she’s not a Rangers fan) so that we can lose a heartbreaking game 7

  25. Manny – Winning fixes EVERYTHING!

Too bad they had to stink up MSG, and get boo’d off the ice, last game.

  26. Welcome to handshake Friday ‘heads.

Condolences to MSL – horrible news.

    Let’s win it for MSL!!

  27. Bartender “Hey Sid, you have to pay for those ciders!”

    Crosby: “WAA”

  28. Stranger Nation on

_Even if they didn’t perform better, Stranger, they would have busted it all 200 feet so I wouldn’t be as annoyed. Poor effort, shying away from the tough spots, that kind of stuff is the worst when the goals aren’t coming_

1000% – this style is just painful to watch and frankly disheartening as a fan. For whatever feelings about Torts or the 2011-12 team, that was the ONLY team is a long, long time that wouldn’t take cr@p from the opposition.

Did we have enough front-line scoring? No
Did our win every period approach wear us down? Yes
Look at our 6th Dman for those two teams; Diaz and Bickel. That says it all.

I knew Richards was the problem and his recent chirping is only more evidence that this team is weak and soft, just like it’s new Capt. According to him, getting to the 2nd round is a successful season.

  29. I don’t know, it’s easy to not be a fan of Sather’s but really I have a hard time pointing the finger at him. I think if you laid out this team on paper at the beginning of the year, you’d take it every time.

    1) The supposed ‘top’ goaltender in the league in Lundqvist
    2) A top ranked defense where even the #5/6/7 guys are passable
    3) Bona fide mix of top 9 forwards – how may of these guys were Olympians? Nash, Callahan/St Louis, Hagelin, Zuccarello, I guess Stephan
    4) Emerging talent/star in Kreider
    5) A 4th line that does it’s job and contributes
    6) A respected coach with experience and past success

On paper that’s about as good a team as you’re going to get absent drafting a generational superstar. You hope a team like that ‘clicks’ in the playoffs and makes a deep run.

Honestly, if the Rangers bow out tonight it’s on the players and coach in my mind. Sather doesn’t play or coach the power-play.

If the Rangers had an average power-play this year in the playoffs we’d be talking about 4 extra goals and a good power-play 6 or 7.

I believe their playoff record would look very different right now had they been able to pot a few on the power-play and that’s all on the players/coach.

  30. And now St. Louis and his family lose his mother 2 days before Mother’s Day. Just horrible. Always a harsh reminder that this is just a game.
    All the best to them.

  31. Few thoughts to share:

    1) Sincerest warmest wishes to the St Louis family.

    2) Our fans need to nut up when this comes back to the garden. I’m embarrassed when I go to a game and see grown men act like petulant children. Booing your own team when they’re in an important game? Counter-productive in my mind… Boo the GM, rant on a blog while you eat bon-bons but booing them when they’re in a game just makes the fan base look stooopid.

    3) We’ll win tonight. I’ll make a stogie bet (1 for 1) with Sioux as necessary to ice it. Not sure we’ll win the series but I’d expect our boys to win convincingly regardless of who scores first. Bold claim, but they’ll rally.

    4) Hank needs to steal one. He’s due.

    5) There will be a little nasty-ness tonight despite the importance of staying out of the box.

    6) One of our 3 best defensemen will play a big role offensively tonight with a timely goal…

  32. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

This team takes crap, then folds, then gives up, then embarrasses us all.

  33. Stranger Nation on

JJP – if and buts were candy and nuts.
    1) The supposed ‘top’ goaltender in the league in Lundqvist _top what?_
    2) A top ranked defense where even the #5/6/7 guys are passable _top ranked, meaning #1 D with no crease clearer or shot from point?_
    3) Bona fide mix of top 9 forwards – how may of these guys were Olympians? Nash, Callahan/St Louis, Hagelin, Zuccarello, I guess Stephan _How many of those guys played top 6 minutes in Sochi? Zucc?_
    4) Emerging talent/star in Kreider
    5) A 4th line that does it’s job and contributes _undersized 4th line with no heavy_
    6) A respected coach with experience and past success

whatever – you like this team, enjoy it, because that is what you have over the next 3 to 4 years. A mid tier team in a bad conference with very to almost no chance of winning the Cup.
1 Cup in 74 years – you like the Cubs too?

  34. Tough for MSL, and a day that none of us look forward to (or have already gone through).

_If he does play, I hope he rocks it and if he doesn’t, I hope there’s no garbage from anyone about what a “big game” it was that he missed._

    Well said, MD.

  35. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

It won’t matter because this *ISN’T* a big game. Everyone should watch this game on *mute* and make sure to be having a good time and barely paying attention. It’s NOT WORTH IT

  36. Here’s a fun one …

*List of 300+ goal scorers born in 1970 (last season played in parenthesis)*:
    Teemu Selanne: 684 (2014)
    Mike Modano: 561 (2010)
    Jeremy Roenick: 513 (2009)
    Rod Brind’Amour: 452 (2010)
    Bill Guerin: 429 (2010)
    Tony Amonte: 416 (2007)
    Trevor Linden: 375 (2008)
    Martin Gelinas: 309 (2008)

  37. AV: “Stop whining. you guys are soft. you lack discipline. Well I’ve got news for you. you are mine now you belong to me. You’re not going to have your mommies behind you anymore to wipe your little tooshies, oh no! it’s time now to turn this mush into muscles. No more complaining, no more ‘AV I have to go to the bathroom’ NOTHING. There IS no bathroom!!”

  38. So which team do you want Stranger, the one that wins the Cup every year? I’m actually not in love with this team but on paper they should be doing better in the playoffs.

  39. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

“Hey Coach. I know tonight is pretty much a done deal for this team but I would still like to see something out of that *loser*” – Arniel, Scott

  40. More or less every time a Kinks song comes on, I think “is this the Beatles … weird … I like this one”.

  41. Don’t know how Marty can play this game!!! Feel terribly for the guy, to lose your mother at such a young age must be devastating. Who cares about this “game”, this is his life.

  42. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

    Ilb – I thinks it’s a 7 or 7:30 start on Sunday.

Brassard – “we will win game 5”

  43. I just want the team that’s on the right path. If there were a “revert back to the 2010-11 elimination game” button I could press right now, I would press it so hard it would break.

  44. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Like that episode of Ren & Stimpy where Stimpy can’t help himself from pushing the Red Button?

  45. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

She walked like a woman but talked like a man. AV-ola AV

  46. Robby Bonfire on

Sorry to learn of MSL’s loss. Something like this puts the fun and games department into perspective. There are worse things in life than losing an important hockey game.

  47. Stranger Nation on

JPP – the team without Sather running it, that’s all. The clown has had 14 seasons to figure it out and he hasn’t.

    that is all…

  48. I really think we look at that team through rose colored glasses.

They were as flawed if not more flawed than this team. They were hard to watch in a different way than this team but since they wore their heart on their collective sleeve we love(d) them.

  49. Stranger Nation on

draxen – agree, that team was not winning the Cup but building through youth was the way to go and Torts finally convinced Stalatpus to go that way and he blew it up because it wasn’t marketable enough for Madison Ave.

  50. Rob in Beantown on

I agree, Manny. This team just isn’t worth stressing out over or even watching the whole game. I’m strongly considering going out and having a nice dinner tonight, ignoring the game, but getting back in time to maybe watch the 3rd period. If we win, cool, if we lose, oh well. Not going to let it ruin my weekend.

  51. _I really think we look at that team through rose colored glasses.

They were as flawed if not more flawed than this team._

Yup. I imagine to an outside fan, we’re a lot closer to the inverse-Flyers than we care to admit. Great goalie, top ~3 defense and a solid core of 2nd/3rd line forwards that we just keep topping with mistake upon costly mistake.

  52. Condolences to MSL & family. Awful time to lose your mother right before their special day.

Seems like I share a similar eff it mentality for tonight’s game as some of you. I’m blaming Richards and his weak azz demeanor for rubbing off on us.

Tonight probably would have been the kind of game Cally willed the NYR to victory. Ugh…

  53. Prayers go out to Marty. Such sad news, when you lose your Mother. I don’t care how old you are, it’s never easy when you have to say good bye to your MOM.

I couldn’t help buy think of Favre when he lost his Father, the night before Monday Night Football. He played, had 4 touchdowns, and probably his best game of his career.

Marty with a Hat Trick for Mom…….. I sure hope so.

  54. Let me ask you again since one person answered me yesterday.

Win or Lose tonight. Was this a Good Year?

  55. If I were Marty, I’d stay away from the game. There are bigger things in life than hockey. Easy for me to say though. Condolences to him and his family.

  56. Wow Rob I had to reread what I wrote 4 times. Way to twist something way around into something it isn’t.

  57. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

@chrismpeters Tim Thomas expected to start today for Team USA against host nation Belarus in the World Championship opener.

@chrismpeters I like this strategy, giving Thomas the start against a country with a government that routinely infringes on its citizen’s civil liberties.

@MannyOWar @PaigeLewisFL @chrismpeters Team USA? More like TEAM FREEDOM with Timmy T in net!

  58. Sioux, whether you consider it a good season or not the fact remains this group has some pretty obvious needs.
How they address things in the off season will be what counts.

  59. Paige Lewis is probably the cutest of the hockey twitterers (if you except Carp from the debate).

  60. MSL, no doubt, has a difficult decision, and you can’t really fault him whichever way he decides.

  61. James G, here’s what I’d do …

    Amnesty Richards

    Sign Stastny

Trade MSL for Dubinsky and Anisimov

Trade Nash for a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick and a 1st round pick

    Sign Callahan

    Trade for Prust

    Win forever

  62. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I would rather have Eric Staal and Jordan Staal than Paul Stastny

  63. Jordan Staal who was just 3 goals and 2 assists shy of Brassard’s line this year?

  64. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Apparently the leafs are still shopping Kadri…..

@DarrenDreger Some trade discussion with teams on a number of Leafs players. Kadri, Gardiner, Bolland and Kulemin included. Leafs brass is eager to talk.

  65. (I love Brassard, but if we gave him *9* years at $6MM per after this year, I’d jump off my front porch.)

  66. Yes – it was a good year. We made the second round of the playoffs and kept Hank (not his best season – but I wanted to keep him). Is it the season I’ve wanted? NO. Is it appropriate to talk about the season as being over when it’s not? Not really…. but, regardless of tonights outcome and as a fan of the game, I’m far from embarrassed at where we are.

Candidly – Nash could do more – but he also led us in goals and had some health issues. Richards was better than I could have expected despite the decrease in horse power (see what I did there?). Zucc was AWESOME and I believe a number of players showed some real growth (I didn’t think poulliot would get to where he is).

That being said, a lot of teams would kill for our depth in D or our goalie… They ALL have holes and when this team learns to REALLY play like a Team and amp it up this time of year, we’ll be even more scary.

Again – I think we win tonight and 3-2 in a series headed home isn’t the worst reality.

  67. Dudley – _3) We’ll win tonight. I’ll make a stogie bet (1 for 1) with Sioux as necessary to ice it. Not sure we’ll win the series but I’d expect our boys to win convincingly regardless of who scores first. Bold claim, but they’ll rally._

We are so *on the same page* today.

I will gladly ship you a cigar if the Rangers win tonight.

I love this kind of bet. So it will cost me a cigar for a win. Yes I’ll be that in a must win game every game. And if my team loses I get a cigar to go with my Scotch. It will help, remember how GREAT of a season this was.

  68. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I love Brassard as our 2c or 3c (depending if we get a real 1c) but yea, that amount of money would make me vomit. We can’t go higher than $4.5M on him and maybe 3-4 years.

  69. James G – 29 teams will have needs, when it’s all said and done this year. Rangers can upgrade in all but three positions.

  70. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

We should get Nazem Kadri in a trade because he’s a good replacement for Brassard or Stepan if we lose one and he’s DIRT CHEAP at $2.9M

  71. I Am too busy to play ARMCHAIR GM today.

I just want to watch our boys win tonight. Go out with a fight. I really want MSL to play the game of his life tonight for his Mother. I really do. So I will say many of prayers for this wish to lift his heavy heart.

    No Boo’s from me. EVER.

  72. Matty"Rangers in 5!!!"Boy on

I guess we need to focus on tonight. I totally get what some of our posters are saying about boo’ing the players. You guys are right. THere’s a time and place.

Nash seems like a ‘good’ guy. And he must, in his own way, be trying hard. Whatever that may be. Oh a human level it must be hard for him to hear the cat calls.

We have time to talk about the GM and what a nincompoop he is. All summer. Long, hot, boring, hate baseball summer.

  73. Kadri would eliminate the need to chase Stastny. I could certainly deal with a tandem of low 1C, high 2Cs in Stepan and Kadri and move on to other needs. Such as trading Nash.

  74. Kadri is essentially a three years younger Brassard -that’s actaully gotten to 50 points in a season-.

  75. Sather Must Go! on

Sorry about the msl news; didnt like the trade but hat has no bearing on real life events…

How much is the mza-brass-pouliot line worth? I thonk that mza’s year was better than the one stepan put together in his RFA, so he shld get a similar deal(3mil/per), brass is already at 3.2m and pouliet will get a decent raise off this year..2.5(?) almost 9mil for that line…i think it is worth it

  76. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

It would be a very effective and relatively inexpensive solution to the problem of center depth.

  77. Stranger Nation on

Someone mentioned it the other day, but the players who are playing at or above expectations (Zucc, Pullout, Bros, Norris, Boyle, D Moops, Car Bong, Speedy Gonzalez, even THE came back) are all pending FAs.

Conicidence with effort or complacency with the rest and/or both…

  78. Do you think the Leaves are down enough on Kadri that we could get him for Miller + B-level prospect?

  79. Dudley – that was exactly the reply I was “fishing” for.
We keep Hank, but lost Cally. (Not Sather’s fault, Cally’s greed got in the way.

Our Defense is really good, McD isn’t 100% in the playoffs, but what a shut down year he has had. What a relief to see Staal back at 100%. G – has signed and earned his new contract. How can you not be happy for him, and his family. Just to think of where he started in the ECHL, undrafted.

Zucc – NOT ONE PERSON IN HERE. Would have guessed he would be our point champion for the season. Everyone loves an Underdog that wins.

Carcillo’s – performance in Philly, still makes me smile.

Hank’s Stays in New York – seriously, he is the face of the team. Win lose or shootout, it has to get by him.

Cam – Biggest bang for the buck. Look at his numbers. Is there a better back up at that value. Cool, Calm, Calculated – winner, winner, chicken dinner.

If we don’t win the next 3 games we are done. Only 4 teams our better than the Rangers. Sure it sucks. My 20-1 ticket didn’t come home.

But, for me, meeting Carp, Eric, Manny & Mrs Manny in New York, far out weighs the money I would have won.

So for this fan, it was a GREAT year for Ranger hockey.

  80. Doodie Machetto on

I’d take Kadri over all of our centers in a heartbeat. Someone with some actual offensive juice.

And I include Stepan because he has yet to show up for the playoffs in his three opportunities to do so.

  81. Nash for Kadri and Franson would be a dream scenario for Manny because they could let Stralman *walk*.

  82. Franson is tough and isn’t a great skater which Manny loves in young right-handed defensemen.

  83. You earn the second “s” after your first full NHL “s”eason. Use your head, Latona.

  84. Franson can also play the point on the PP with McD. He did struggle, points-wise, the second half of this season.

  85. I’m willing to ignore anything that happened in the 2nd half of the Leafs season. Just a clusterfudge.

  86. I would insist that Franson has to change his first name upon being traded to NY.

  87. If MSL’s mom was ill and this was the reason that trade between TB and NYR was made, hats off to both class organizations and God bless MSL and his family.

SN…I’m the guy that mentioned the correlation between those players making a post season impact and those being UFAs and I don’t think its coincidence…they’re playing to set themselves up for several years, perhaps more. The others, you need that special player (Messier) whose bank overfloweth but who still has the killer desire to win, and I’m not sure the Rangers have those guys.

  88. Pimpster – could you dial up the mean nasty THE that’s hits and scores.

I really like to watch “that” hockey player PLAY!

  89. am I the only one who still likes Miller and still sees him as a big part of the team going forward?

step brass miller d-moops seems like a pretty good 1-4 depending on how the wings fill out.

  90. BMac – I think you are right. They play to GET the new contract. Then after it’s signed. They play NOT to get hurt, so they can collect on all of it.

    i.e. – Nash. Richards. Redden. Drury. Gomez……….

  91. _am I the only one who still likes Miller and still sees him as a big part of the team going forward?_

    Nope. We agree a lot.

  92. Eric, remember when Dubinsky was “an overpaid 3rd liner”? Or when Callahan was “a glorified 3rd liner”. Our definition of 3rd line talent seems to be flawed here.

  93. Flip a coin on Miller Drax. He sure has upside, and looks like he has the body that can play at the NHL level. But if he doesn’t score more than 5 goals in 2 years, with 59 games under his belt. He may be that type of player that holds this team “back”, from getting to the next level. After 3 years, your learning curve is OVER.

I’m not sure he has the head for the game.

  94. Or maybe if our definition of 3rd liner isn’t flawed, our reasonable expectation of what all but the elite, repeated top 5 pick forward corps look like is. We’re not going to shape up like Pitt or Chicago or even the Avs or Oilers any time soon.

  95. Drax – Every team has to sign a couple of PullOuts, D Moore, Carcillo’s, to see what they have left in the tank. I think these three all have value, and could very easily help this team.

But will they help this team get to the next level? Or do we just put that all on Nash, MSL, & Richie for tanking in the playoffs?

  96. Gravy – I know that. But they don’t play nearly as hard, as the year before the “new” contract.

Richie is playing for his “next” deal…… because he is bought out the day the season is over. He will laugh all the way to the bank, and some team is going to give him another 7-8 Million for 2-3 more years. (NOT $6.7 for 6 more)

  97. So Miller (15 in 41 in the AHL) is OVER but Kristo (3 years older, pending NHL debut) is slotted onto your 2014-15 2nd line, Sioux? Ok. Makes sense.

  98. That said I want MILLER to succeed, and be that 25-25 50pts center.

I just think he is a head case. And that it what every coach he’s ever had, AV included. If he doesn’t figure it out, he’s going to be a really good AHL player.

  99. I’d cite Lecav, Coos, but Holmgren can’t make those mistakes anymore. That said, I’ll take a pretend handshake bet that Richards finds atleast 3 years out there.

  100. i’d unload miller this offseason while he still might be worth something to someone.

maybe put him in a package with nick rash to toronto for kadri.

a canadian city is probably the only way we have a shot to get rid of nash

  101. Doc – I’m not in the mood.

But here me out, with an open mind.

I believe deep down in my nuggets, Miller would have matured mentally had he spent 2 years in college. Let him grow up, 18 years old, grow into your NHL body. Then move up to the AHL/NHL. Like Step, McD, Hags, Boyle, MSL, D.MOORE, …… the list goes on. Ranger win, they own him for 2 more years under his entry level deal. Miller has 1 more year to prove his worth. And HE gets to his $1M one way contract 2 years earlier.

Kristo – almost jumped in the lockout year, but Montreal didn’t even have a coach that summer. They fired everyone. The NHL season was 48 games, if at all. So he decided to Stay in School, as a senior and play with Nelson, Knight, and his 6 other classmates.

Had Miller played with Grimaldi they would have had huge success, but he skip it. Miller wouldn’t have even been the best player for the Sioux that year as a freshman. Neslon (islanders) was the point champion that year 3 ahead of Kristo. Kristo was the point champion the next year. Grimaldi was the point champion this year (signed with Florida).

Now you can gut me like a fish, after Kristo gets his 59th GAME in a BLUESHIRT. I will bet you every penny in your bank account he will have more than 5 F’n Goals.

  102. I just dialed THE Kreider and he told me he’s going to focus on pummeling Crosby AND Malkin tonight.

May even throw a hat trick in there.

  103. Sorry if I seem to be on tilt, because I am a little.

And everytime this team layed an egg this year. And I had to watch Fast, Miller, Powe, Asham, and Carcillo for that matter. Play 80 games, and they get 6 goals.

    Miller 31 games – 3 goals.
    Carcillor 31 games – 3 goals.

Kristo – 0 games. Yet many a games no goals were scored. Like 5 of Millers, or 5 of Carcillos, or 6 of Fast. Would have really hurt this team when they couldn’t score 1 goal for Hank.

Kick me in the teeth if I Am wrong.

  104. Jeff in South Dakota on

Godzilla, er, The Kreider will stomp Skidney into the ground tonight. All hail The Kreider!

  105. Here we are in the Playoff’s laying eggs.

Miller + Fast 6 games – 0 goals. Rangers lose in this round. Done stick a fork in them.

Deep down, I feel that Kristo should have played 6-8 games this year. Out of the 80 that were available in the post above.

Now has Miller jumped ahead of him ….. I’ll wait till my boy gets a shot.

  106. Kadri? you guys want Kadri? I thought we were tired of these guys who care more about the glitz and glam then playing hockey. Kadri and Brassard are very similar players. this is the new toy syndrome

  107. _Now you can gut me like a fish, after Kristo gets his 59th GAME in a BLUESHIRT. I will bet you every penny in your bank account he will have more than 5 F’n Goals._

So you’re guaranteeing the guy born the same day as Derek Stepan who, to date, can’t escape the AHL will outscore a 19-20 year old? Bold, Sioux.

(Really, the Miller stuff is tedious. I get it, he committed to your school then backed out whereas Kristo played. The positive pro-UND stuff is fun, but the flipside comments against our kids (both Miller and Tambellini) is dumb.)

  108. Izzy Mandlebaum on

That’s flawed reasoning. Just because St Louis lost to Chicago doesn’t make the Rangers better than St Louis. Ditto Boston/Montreal, San Jose.

    That’s one dimensional thinking.

  109. I’m tired of one dimensional veterans making $6MM+ per season for far too many years. I’ll take 23 year old talents with 94 points over their last season and a half every single chance I can.

  110. I think we’re saying we’d rather pay $2.9M for a decent bet of 50-60 points rather than $8M for a decent bet of 70-80.

  111. The only upsetting thing is that this Pittsburgh team for once has look TOTALLY beatable in a 7 game series and the New York Rangers simply didn’t show up in the series and they have absolutely not been playing “playoff hockey” since Game 1 vs Philly.

If you get even mediocre production from Nash, St. Louis and if McD wasn’t obviously injured…this all looks much different.

Same Rangers. Top guys not showing up and completely impotent Power Play.

There’s a market for Rick Nash and we simply HAVE to explore it…we cannot hold onto this guy…obviously damaged goods.

  112. Stranger Nation on

_Kick me in the teeth if I Am wrong_

Sioux – reality is Miller outscored your boy when they were in Hartford together. Sorry but Miller may not be the answer, but he was the Pack’s best player when he was there; (42 pts in 41 games for Miller; 43 pts in 65 games for Kristo) Kristo is also 3 yrs older than Miller.

Miller has to grow up and out. A couple of months hitting the gym hard and some emotionally maturity would do him wonders. He is very young (just turned 21), has good size and shines against his own age so let’s not put a ceiling on him yet.

  113. I question peoples hockey knowledge if you think Kadri is a #1 center. Brassard IS better then Kadri. And stepan is better then both.

You guys all hate on stepan. Im telling you he’s been hampered since game 4 of the Philly series. Plus his wingers have put up no points, aren’t getting in scoring position, and your surprised he doesn’t have any numbers. One of Stepan’s main flaws, is that concedes to other players on his line. He’s always trying to get another guy going, he’s always trying to set up his winger. Sometimes he needs to do more himself, and especially shoot more.

All honesty, if the rangers traded Stepan for Kadri, it would be one of those moves that is agonized over for the next 15 years. Stepan is not a superstar. but he is, (for lack of wanting to think of a better term) a poor mans Bergeron. And he’s a second round pick who has been playing with the team since he was 19 or 20.

You do know if Richards had lived up to his role, Stepan would be viewed as one of the best 2nd line centers in the league and the rangers would be looked at as having center depth that ranks up there with the top teams

  114. Come on Mister D, Im not in the mood to play stupid games.

Kadri and Brassard are similar players, position wise, size wise, skill wise

And Kadri is most definitely and glitz and glam kind of guy

Can I clear up anything else?

  115. You can clear up what “glitz and glam” means and how Kadri’s near PPG rate last year doesn’t elevate him above Brassard’s status.

  116. Stranger Nation on

Salty – agreed to an extent. Pits has also played a smarter game, much more responsible on D and just happy not to have faces smashed against the glass every shift like Lumbus did to them.

  117. go watch HBO 24/7 from this season and then read up a little on Kadri and you’ll know exactly what I mean by glitz and glam.

And last year Kadri had 50 points in 78 games. Thats not a PPG rate.

  118. Rob in Beantown on

“Are you a friend or an enemy of complacency, Naz?”

    “A friend?”

    “Oh, Jesus.”

    “Wrong byfuglien answer,”

  119. “Where in this thread did anyone claim Kadri was a #1 center?”

    Manny-O-War, King of Metal

We should get Nazem Kadri in a trade because he’s a number one center and he’s DIRT CHEAP at $2.9M

  120. It’s a bit unfair to make a claim about someone, then tell people to “look it up” when they ask what you mean.

  121. Well, in my opinion, I’d rather go with Stepan, Brassard, and Kadri with $5M more in cap space, than Stastny, Stepan, Brassard.

  122. but comparing this years stats

    Kadri 78games 20g 30a 50pts
    Brass 80games 18g 27a 45pts

    And last years

    Kadri 48games 18g 26a 44pts
    Brass 47games 12g 17a 29pts

    Acouple points about last season

1)it was a lockout year and the hockey was sloppy
    2) Kadri had a crazy tear to begin the year. I dont know where to look up advanced stats. But I’d like to see the point production broken down by month
    3) Brassard was traded to new team.

Aside from the hype, Id say Brassard and Kadri are pretty similar stat-wise. And if you watch them play, you see they are pretty similar in their game.

  123. Tonites refs Tim peel. Chris Rooney.

Peel. Rangers 4-1 pens 4-1 this year.

    Rooney rangers 5-1 pens 3-5

  124. Stranger Nation on

Somehow the opening of the new and not really improved Walters Hot Dog stand (aka the Pagoda on Palmer Ave.) coincided with this team’s slide

  125. Alain Amour on

    Explains his play

It does not explain his play. His mother died yesterday.

  126. I did watch the series. Kadri dressed nice and maybe might be a bit dumb. I didn’t get glitz and glam unless I’m forgetting something.

  127. JPP
It’s enlightening to hear from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Thank You

  128. Well then I hope I satisfied you Gravy.

In terms of me telling Mister D to watch some of the HBO 24/7 show to see examples of what I am talking about.

I say that, bc I’d have to watch it again to see and remember the clips and segments that made me feel that way.

Again, Im sorry I dont feel like researching and finding some of the articles I read about his up-bringing and more personal stories about him. Seems like a good guy, but it seems like his prioritizes tend to more in line with becoming a star then winning hockey games.

    Is that fair?

  129. Rob in Beantown on

I agree with Mister D’s assessment. On the show he actually seemed like a pretty humble and level headed kid. If there was any “glitz” it wasn’t more than what you’d expect from the average 23 year old millionaire.

  130. Alain Amour on

Why should we care who the referees are and what each team’s record is in games overseen by those referees?

  131. If we got Kadri, I’d play him and Brassard as co-centers on the 1st line and fill the 3rd slot with a videographer so I can cherish their shifts forever.

  132. i guess i am being judgmental, ill be honest. but when I see someone presented on a show like that and presented in the light he was. I think to myself, the show is showing that angle for a reason, they think they shows who he is best, thats how they wanted to present him.

And yes to me, spending so much time money and thought on your appear makes me think glitz and glam.

    Yes it does

  133. Fair enough, jpp. I hadn’t heard any stories, and I was having a little fun.

  134. I can’t even imagine your take on Lupul then. Or Henrik. Or the seemingly 50%+ of NHL players who kind of embrace fashion.

  135. Gravy, can you do me a favor. I won’t look to engage you. Don’t try to engage me with everything I say. I see such assisine things being said here sometimes, you dont see me jumping on everything you thing.
    Grow up man

  136. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

*Nash* and *Miller* for *Nazem Kadri* would be a win win for us.

Although Max Pacioretty might be better…

  137. GerryD,

It was enlightening for you to say no one hear knows what they’re talking about with your first -millionth- post.

  138. No problem Gravy, I know its all fun. I dont think be healthy for anyone to be chatting here on this blog for any other reason than to speak your mind and have some fun

  139. Just having some dialogue on -elimination- game day. Sorry if it came off that way.

  140. Back to the actual hockey, I think Kadri (now) is the next level up for Brassard on a similar talent base. He’s shown he can score, not just has the ability to score, and he plays a more physical game. I think either one could take another step without it being a major outlier, just things clicking. Nice players to have on your roster.

  141. “I can’t even imagine your take on Lupul then. Or Henrik. Or the seemingly 50%+ of NHL players who kind of embrace fashion.”

Here’s my take on Henrik, Ive seen him play for 9 years or so. I have no question if he’s giving his all, and where his priorities are.

Lupul? I could say for all his talent and skill, he could be a lot better then he’s been on average in his career. A player of Lupul’s skill and stats has been traded how many times? Players of his caliber dont traded that often. Maybe it is an issue with him.

Get your priorities straight if your making millions and are take of a team in a team sport. You take care of business, your free to do whatever the heck you want. Hank, go be you. Richards, dont get your untucked shirt caught in the door on your way out.

  142. Doodie Machetto on

Kadri has more points this year, his second full NHL season, than Brassard has had at any point over his 5 full NHL seasons. He’s scored more goals than Brassard ever has. And he’s going to make about 1/3 less than Brassard will next season.

I don’t see how there is any comparison between the two. Kadri is already better and has a higher ceiling.

  143. No doubt there. If Kadri gets better and better, and Brassard is what he is now. Then yes, Kadri will be a better player.

I think they are some questions around the league, whether Kadri take that next stop, and I think some of the questions are based upon how much does he want it. How much does he want to put in outside of game day.

  144. Another thing, there’s a major perception issue with guys who are productive but don’t live up to draft status. If you sort centers by points this season (knowing misclasses tend to add to that position, not take away), Brassard was 54th in points, which means across the league he’s performing as a low 2 / high 3. That’s not 6th overall good, but its a really solid player and one that I think most of us think could top out higher. His days of being a potential all-star have passed, but if he’s your 3C, your 3C is a strong spot.

  145. You also have to look at what Columbus roster looked like and how Brassard was playing with, as opposed to toronto’s roster.

Toronto has a much better and offensively gifted roster then Columbus did when Brassard came up.

Also age may be a factor. I think Brassard started playing in the league at a younger age then Kadri did.

Seriously guys. I dont Kadri is going to be much better then Brassard is going to be. I really dont

  146. _Get your priorities straight if your making millions and are take of a team in a team sport._

You’re really looking way too much into “23 year old millionaire wears nice clothes”.

  147. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

The only knock on Kadri is attitude (same knock on Brassard) and that he’s on a team that scores an awful lot of goals and gives up even more.

  148. Like if Kadri wore Jos A Bank buy one get three free, you’d think he’s trying harder?

  149. Doodie Machetto on

Lupul has been moved a lot because of circumstance.

He was part of the return on the Pronger trade, as a promising young player. Can’t blame him there.

He struggled his one year in Edmonton on a terrible team. Looked like he was just a flash in the pan during his previous playoff run with Anaheim. So he gets traded to Philly. That one I put on him.

Then in Philly he had two pretty good seasons, although his first one was derailed a bit by a spinal injury. Then, after signing a four year extension, he was traded again for Pronger. Can’t blame him there.

Then he struggled mightily with injuries, playing only 49 games over two seasons before being traded to Toronto. In Toronto, he’s managed to stay pretty healthy and has been really effective when he plays.

  150. Alain Amour on

your 3C is a strong spot.

    At what cost?

How much would you have the Rangers commit to a peak 3C?

  151. _I dont Kadri is going to be much better then Brassard is going to be. I really dont_

… ignoring that he’s 3 years younger and already has surpassed Brassard.

  152. its not the clothes mister D. are you kidding me, you think I’m that shallow.

Im gonna say your better then this

  153. Doodie Machetto on

“I think they are some questions around the league, whether Kadri take that next stop, and I think some of the questions are based upon how much does he want it.”

Only out of the Toronto media echo chamber.

  154. _its not the clothes mister D. are you kidding me, you think I’m that shallow._

I’m going only off comments like “spending so much time money and thought on your appear makes me think glitz and glam”. That’s a shallow statement, intended or not, right?

  155. Enjoy your day here Mister D. I have no reason to go back and forth with you. I couldn’t care less about Nazim Kadri.

One of the posters hear posted they would trade stepan for kadri, I commented that this is stupid.

That was, is, and IS my point.

    Lets go Rangers

  156. Are you the ‘thought police’ ???

you think because I am of the mentality and thinking, that when I see people so invested in the way they look and present, that I think they are swayed by glitz and glam, that I am shallow?

  157. I would *not* trade Stepan for Kadri. I would take a trade for him, at a reasonable cost, rather than signing Stastny. I’d trade Nash for Kadri and Franson, if that were offered in fairy tale land.

  158. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Kadri put up only 3 less points in the Shortened season than Brassard’s Career high

  159. SN – Agree 100%.

I still say after Kristo has played 59 Games in the NHL. He will have more than 5 goals.

I don’t care if he plays in the net.

  160. I think Nash and Kadri would benefit from a change of scenery.

    (Right Dave Norris???)

  161. would you trade stepan for kadri?

And I’m not arguing that Brassard is a better player then kadri. I said they were very similar players and you could compare them.. I’ve actually never stated I think Brassard is better.

Some posters here selectively construct arguments and target other posters based what you want to see and hear.

    Thats shallow and ignorant guys

  162. Sioux, I know Kadri is not Sioux alumni and has played more games in the NHL even though he is younger than Kristo, but you wouldn’t take him as #2/3 center?

  163. Doc – _but the flipside comments against our kids (both Miller and Tambellini) is dumb_

I thought they were honest. What statement was dumb?

  164. jpp, not being confrontational, but you did say Brassard was better in your 12:47 post.

  165. I just asked why? I didn’t say no.

Is he better than Lingberg? He was a Sweden MVP, in their pro league. The Point leader in the Wolfpack last year.

Wouldn’t he be the next center to look at in a Blueshirt?

  166. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I’m with Gravy. You said that Kadri will never be better than Brassard. Which implies that Brassard is better.

  167. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Sioux!? ARE YOU INSANE? This is like when you wanted us to pick up Mike Green.

Kadri is UNIVERSES better than Lindberg! Christ almighty.

  168. haha so i did. touché.

I was leading to my comment that stepan is better then both.

I did go out and state I think Brassard is a better player.

  169. Sioux, I thought “who wants Kadri” followed by a hundred question marks meant you didn’t. :)

The Leaves seem to be listening on all their RFAs, according to Dreger.

  170. No Manny, gravy is right. I actually said word for word, that Brassard IS better then Kadri.

I went a little overboard in saying it. Bc I dont watch Kadri enough to say that I know that of sure

Nothing wrong in admitting you were wrong

  171. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I thought you said the Rangers should look into getting a D-Man like Greene. I hope it wasn’t Mike Green.

  172. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

_Sioux, I thought “who wants Kadri” followed by a hundred question marks meant you didn’t._

LMGO. Gravy is en fuego today

  173. I want Matt GREENE, for Defensive toughness for the blue line. HE wears the A, for the Kings.

Hits like a truck. If Stralman walks, I say hire Greene to fill his spot.

  174. Gravy – just busy at work. Didn’t want to read the whole thread to catch up. Crib notes work for me :)

  175. I mean, really, it doesn’t matter if Kadri is better than Brassard or vice versa. I think the point is that we’re hoping the team looks more at those potential upside guys than the “all your eggs in one basket” free agents.

  176. Kadri won’t come cheap? It will cost us a trade and picks. Is where I’m coming from.

  177. I don’t know a whole lot about Greene, but at 30, coming off almost $3M per, and a UFA (for a potential Cup winning team), isn’t he going to take Girardi money?

  178. Open draft, I take Stepan over Kadri over Brassard with a much bigger gap between 2 and 3 than between 1 and 2. I like all three and if we went like that down the middle you’d be calling me Mister S(miles a lot these days).

  179. We’re still going to look back at this conversation and laugh about how we were talking about offseason moves when the Rangers win the Cup.

  180. Nothing. I want Kadri and Franson for Nash. I made up the trade and hope that it happens some day :)

  181. I like they young kid Morgan Rielly. I think he is going to be a stud on the blue line.

  182. “I mean, really, it doesn’t matter if Kadri is better than Brassard or vice versa. I think the point is that we’re hoping the team looks more at those potential upside guys than the “all your eggs in one basket” free agents.”

    Agree with this.

Trade Nash for picks and cap relief. Sign Dubinsky next summer.. hahah is Dubinsky an all your eggs in one basket free agent?

  183. Well, HOPEFULLY we win the cup. If not, hopefully a bunch of NYR will get shipped over to Belarus.

  184. Gaborik will be available. I wonder how good he would be in AV’s system.

  185. _hahah is Dubinsky an all your eggs in one basket free agent?_

As long as he costs less than $7M per year :)

  186. Dudley – I’m looking at my cigars which one are we playing for tonight?

  187. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Dubinsky is always going to be “overpaid” because he brings so much else to the table. Our fanbase HATES guys like that and never understands.

  188. I want Dubinsky no matter what but I’m admittedly an idiot when it comes to Dubinsky.

  189. No way Dubinsky gets $6m and if he does, good for him – he’s got the best agent in town.

  190. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

_I want Dubinsky no matter what but I’m admittedly an idiot when it comes to Dubinsky._

That’s exactly what his girlfriend says after every time he cheats on her, Doc.

  191. Who cares if Kadri is better then Brassard or vice versa. Brassard is not the teams problem so why is this even being discussed at such length? Id take Kadri for the price, but really like what Brassard has done since coming to the Rangers. Brassard should stay, as should Stepan and Moore. If you can get Kadri great, the team does need a true #1c, but overall the center position along with Defense and Goalending are not really the problems. Team needs strong scoring wingers that can perform. Our 3rd and 4th line wingers are doing their job, extremely well actually. Can you honestly say the top 4 wingers are perfoming as top 4 wingers? I’d like to see changes made to improve these positions the most.

  192. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

@chrismpeters USA up 1-0 on Belarus after 1. Brock Nelson with the goal. Really interesting first period from the young guys. Looked dominant at times.

  193. Matty"Rangers in 5!!!"Boy on

It seems the best strategy for teams to use vs. the Pens is to check their finesse players every chance possible. Get under their skin and physically soften them up.

Aside from the Staal ‘headhunting’ (lol!), we are making it entirely too easy for them.

  194. If Sather wouldn’t give Callahan more than $6, he’s not going to for Dubnisky. I’d go about $5M, but someone will probably pony up closer to $6M.

  195. Would take Dubinsky back in a heartbeat. Should have kept him in the 1st place and offered Callahan in the trade. Probabaly would have been able to of kept the draft pick also.

  196. _Dubinsky is always going to be “overpaid” because he brings so much else to the table. Our fanbase HATES guys like that and never understands._

I would looooooove to know what kind of quantification is done in certain front offices to measure off-the-puck value.

  197. Hate to tell you, Matty, but it’s going to arguably take at least six games for the Rangers to win. In my opinion.

  198. Alain Amour on

Overrated and overpaid is not the direction in which the franchise should continue moving.

  199. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I mean, Dubinsky has a “C” on his Sweater now. That counts. He also is Mr. Intangibles and Mr. Teammate. That HAS to count for something in some weird metric system, right?

  200. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

You mean in some dumb hockey system like the one Vigneault plays?

  201. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

The sooner the Rangers lose the sooner we can all go buy discounted Rangers gear featuring players that will never play another game on their team. Like Boyle.

  202. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

That was so generous of you, Latona. I’m impressed.

  203. Carp – Do you self medicate or are you simply a zen master? Don’t know how you deal with this sometimes…

Sioux – You get it – thank you.

Let’s get excited – I BELIEVE we win tonight. Let’s do it.

  204. Francesa teased a call from “Al Micheletti” last week or the week before.

  205. I’m one of the people who always wanted us to keep Dubi over Cally anyway. I still feel that way.

the Nash trade will end up burying us. Not because it was a bad trade at the time but because Nash just isn’t the guy he was supposed to be.

Whether that is because of injuries or not is a moot point.

I still think both the Nash and Cally trade are trades you make. That’s the nature of trading right, it’s still a gamble. Those 2, based off of this years results, did not work out.

27nyr94 hit the nail on the head RE: the Brassard/Kadri argument. Brassard is not the problem here. If Brass is your 2/3 C and your top 6 wingers are doing their job the team is a dangerous team.

It once again comes down to Nash & MSL under/non performing and Hagelin/carcillo/miller/fast being miss-cast as 2nd line wingers.

I think Richards has been surprisingly acceptable.

Zucc/Brass/Pull-out though they perform as our 2nd line, really is better suited as a 3rd line. That is a third line on a contending team.

I had a whole long “off – season plan” written up but then looked it over and didn’t feel happy with the result even if things went the way i want.

  206. Offseason plan: Go back in time to just before the Richards signing, do everything opposite

  207. Manny-o-war on

The only plan that will make a difference is FIRE SATHER.

Put Gorton in charge before another team steals him.

  208. I was under the impression that even though Slats is still the final decision maker most of the leg work is done by Gorton now anyhow

    am I wrong?

if I am not wrong, then do we really want to replace slats with Gorton?

  209. The Richards’ contract, at the time, wasn’t a horrendous one. Yes, it was for a bit too much money, but he was the best #1 center available, and they were looking for someone to play with Gaborik. And, Richards was pretty clutch in 11-12.

It became a problem when the NHL completely changed contract rules in the middle of it.

  210. Condolences to msl.

Agree with ILB re his play…also might explain his specific request to be a ranger. If the case, good for him and good for slats.

  211. Cap Geeked on

A team should want Dubinsky while he is playing for that next big contract.

Once he signs that big long term contract I think because of his skill level he would more than likely be overpaid.

In general you should want guys that are hungry not complacent. Human nature.

  212. Norm Merton on

Many Rangers should be asking themselves tonight: Do I like playing in New York on the big stage? Not sure who can afford to be a passenger tonight, for his own sake if not his teammates’. If the Penguins win but the Rangers bring the intensity and make them earn it, for at least one game, fair enough. If they fold, watch that roster move!

Hoping we don’t see Carcillo or Dorsett tonight — all they bring is snarl, and you can’t put the snarl on players you can’t even skate with. Carcillo is not even close to fast enough for Penguin-paced hockey. Dorsett can skate a little, but does AV trust him to be disciplined enough in an elim. game?

  213. And something to ponder. Let’s assume the following: 1) the rules weren’t changed, 2) the Rangers had a wink, wink agreeement that Richards would retire before the $1M years, and 3) there’s no re-capture penalty.

Do you buyout Richards or Nash? Probably Nash in that case because you only have Richards at an effective 3 years at $6.67M

  214. Just curious here, but does anyone know who the last ranger was to avg a point per game during the regular season???

  215. Thanks guys! Clearly our point producers come from outside the organization.

Anyone have any ideas who the last homegrown ranger player was to avg a point per game in an 82 game season?

  216. Norm –

I think you are spot on with point #1 – well said.

With regard to point #2 – I couldnt disagree more…. Carcillo is a leading point producer for us in the PO’s AND has nice wheels and a decent set of hands for someone considered “just snarl”. Given all the tears we shed about being not tough enough, I’m constantly amazed by our disinterest in him. In my mind, he’s one of the positive stories SO FAR in this season.

    Norm Merton

  217. Gravy why fixate on hypotheticals? Richards = buyout, Nash = trade. It’s pretty simple, the question mark is what can you get in return for Nash?

I also don’t think he’ll be traded over the summer but if I were Sather I would get it done ASAP.

    Nash is not a winner.

  218. Leetch had 79 in 82 in 00-01. The stats on the NHL sites only go back to 97-98. I’d guess it was Leetch before that at 85 in 82 back in 95-96.

  219. Salty, because what else am I going to talk about on the *verge* of elimination?

  220. And because 99% of boneheads agree, Richards is the buyout. And because someone pushed the “screw the Rangers (and others)” button in the CBA negotiations.

  221. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Ok guys. Let’s all talk about tonight’s AWESOME game!

We’re probably going to lose. St. Louis isn’t playing. We’re SCREWED

  222. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Also, Nash can be bought out with a REGULAR buyout. There is no decision to be made. Richards has to be a compliance buyout. Capice?

But Nash is tradeable. Or maybe recoverable. He could turn it around. Getzlaf had a horrendous season and then came back strong.

  223. My question was *hypothetical*. All contracts and recaptures being equal, you probably buyout Nash.

  224. Norm Merton on

Dudley, “I couldn’t disagree more.” Let me encourage you to break that pledge. Carcillo last game stunk up the ice, unable to track his designated Penguin. Yes, he made a great conversion on the miracle Zuccarello pass in a previous game, and so it may be worth the gamble to get that one great play, but at what cost? I say it’s too risky tonight, that it’s a back-checking game fist and foremost for the Rangers. OK, now you can disagree more.

  225. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Pretty good if he didn’t have that stupid broken Jaw plexiglass helmet attachment.

  226. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Ugh. Sorry for the rudeness, Gravy. You did ask a *hypo*

You’ve really been nailing it today and you didn’t deserve what I said. Keep up the great work.

*and now for something completely different…*

If a company developed Beer made from Chicken it would be the ultimate workout recovery drink. Right?

  227. Miami Pimp on

Do you guys think THE Kreider will score 2, 3, or 4 goals tonight?

I personally think he’ll stop at a hat trick and then pummel Crosby endlessly.

  228. ZzZz NYR ZzZz© on

Last night for a game. Always fun with you guys.

Last Night? Wow man , just think you just got married a few years ago …Failed marrage , wife cheating , kids are a mess…no wonder you have no faith. You somber mood always makes me wanna puke . As funny as you think you are there is ALWAYS someone who will think your a idiot . No Faith in our team , honestly don’t buy any more tickets cuz your an embarassement.

  229. How can Nash be bought out via “regular buyout”…did I miss something? I thought the whole point was that that after this summer you can no longer buy anyone out.

Nash is still highly tradable. This is his 4th round of playoffs in NY and he has shown that he doesn’t get it done. Plain and simple. Does. Not. Get. It. Done.

Does. Not. Go. Hard. To. The. Net. = UNACCEPTABLE.

The biggest BS stat in the league is that Nash leads the league in shots taken in the playoffs. What those numbers dont show is how he literally skates far away from the net before shooting, turns his back to the net before shooting, poor quality shots….and when he has had GREAT OPPORTUNITIES ALONE WITH THE GOALIE IN CLOSE…..not getting it done.

I like the guy. He seems like a nice guy. He has ultimately failed to do his job in NY and this team can’t afford to hope we go from “zero to hero” in our next playoffs.

  230. Norm Merton on

I’d sit Kreider, too. Good roll hoping he’d energize the team at MSG, but that backfired. I’d rather see the less exciting but more responsible Jesper Fast in this game (unless Matt Fraser is available) but with MSL out, AV will have fewer options anyway.

  231. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Whoah Greg ZZZZzzzZZzzZzzZZZzzz. Easy buddy. Eric is an all star bonehead and a wonderful human being. So, maybe you should stop that BS immediately as well as apologize.

  232. Jeff in South Dakota on

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman to THE KREIDER: “Why aren’t you stomping Private Pyle’s, er, Crosby’s guts out?”

  233. Norm – Very fair argument (in my humble opinion) and well stated. I’d counter that we’ve fallen short in passion, jump and hunger. I’m shocked to see our inability to elevate for the biggest stage. Carcillo doesn’t want for a motor, speed or passion. He’s experienced in the PO’s and is a major reason we’re in this round at all. Experience says you’re right – my heart says it’s wrong.

  234. Norm Merton on

Someone should try to get into Markand-Rayflury’s head in the pre-skate, tell him his sister Marylène’s teeth are misaligned. Something old school like that.

  238. I really wish this blog had someone who only had ONE tired joke to say over and over and constantly felt the need to litter the blog with it in their every post. God, that would be SO funny and amusing. Every day, every post, every 5 minutes. REALLY need that.

They would not need to make any other contribution to any discussions, EVER. Just come in…say that same joke every 30 minutes in case someone forgets their “clever signature line” and then wait another 30 minutes or less to post it again.

Damn…if ONLY someone could grace the blog with that very special kind of presence.

  241. Norm Merton on

Dudley, I’d guess he’ll play in the circumstances, and I’ll be rooting for him, but he’s going to have step it way, way up and keep his cool at the same time. Tough ask for a player with his temperament, though anything’s possible — he has not been the disaster I thought he’d be when Sather Fedex’d that box o’ jox to get him.

  242. “You can buyout a player and their cap hit reduced by being extended for twice the life of the remaining cap hit.”

Okay yeah…I guess technically you can call it a “buyout” but…it’s not really much of a buyout is it…

No need to keep money on the books for an any double extended time or whatever…Trade “Big Rick” before he gets any slower or any shyer or heaven forbid he takes another hit. Get pieces in return. Get some of that fresh meat from Edmonton that Eakins can’t handle.

  277. MSL’s a better and bigger man than me. Hope the team can pull it off for him tonight.

  278. 3-1 loss tonight but we go out strong, which then leads me to think “did Richards just show enough ‘leadership’ to save his / ruin my next 6 years?”

    So much is willpower.

    i like the saying.

Willpower is your best friend and your worst enemy. It’s your willpower that allows you to succeed and to create, and its your willpower that prevents you from achieving more.
