Game 3: Penguins at Rangers … It’s Go Time!

[polldaddy poll=8022317 align="left"]
Game 3.penguins
Penguins at Rangers.

This is game No. 6 in nine days for the Rangers. In no other sport would this be allowed to happen. Just a complete injustice to the athletes and for the quality and integrity of the playoffs for the fans

The Rangers have won six of their last seven Game 3s, losing only to Boston last May.

The Rangers are 12-5 in their last 17 home playoff games, and 7-2 in the last nine.

Derek Dorsett did not skate in warmups — after taking the bad penalty that ended up in the clinching goal late in Game 2 — and it looked as if Jesper Fast would replace him on the fourth line. J.T. Miller and Raphael Diaz also skated in warmups.

Henrik Lundqvist will set the all-time franchise record for playoff games by a goalie, passing Mike Richter, with his 77th tonight.

Rick Nash is now stuck on 1 goal in 21 playoff games as a Ranger. He has not been even the slightest bit of a factor in this series so far.

The Rangers’ power play, since Game 2 of the Philadelphia series, is 0-for-29.

After the game, vote for the Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left.

  1. I’d love to talk hockey with Kathryn Tappin, then maybe do other things-Prust sayin’

  2. ThisYearsModel on

GoTime! Nash gave his all in the interview with Pierre, answering questions about Skidney. Kreider scratched due to upper body injury. Dorsett scratched for being stupid.

Miller was in over his head. Fast played ok. Fast scores tonight.

  7. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

    You can’t make this up

JR – “you don’t know what Marc Andre Fleury shows up”

  8. Just talked to Nasher… He’s good for 2G & 1A tonight.

    Papa Bear Pep Talk!

    Book It.

  9. Just because I usually tell you guys what I feel, however worthless, I don’t see ya boys winning Game 3.

  10. Manny-o-war on

Roenick tried, Carp. He said it was entirely up to Nash and his line mates cannot be blamed for his failures, etc.

  11. Clown on the scoreboard just called Ron Greschner the best Ranger in history. Might have said best defenseman, which doesn’t make it any better.

  12. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Ricardo – JR compared Nash to gabby – and lack of fan love and that both need someone to get them the puck – see my 7:26 for JR’s MAF quote

  13. ThisYearsModel on

CARP–still working on the translation of JR’s comments into understandable English. Might take awhile. I did hear the terms “outside” and “perimeter” regarding Nash.

  14. First post-match question for Vigneault: What do you think went wrong tonight?

  15. ThisYearsModel on

Dorsett, Moore, Falk and Carcillo scratched. That means Fast, Diaz and Miller are in.

  16. Papa could climb a pole if someone one were kind enough to install one.

  20. Not sure i like Carcillo coming but overall definitely like the moves.

Also really not mad that NBCSN is skipping the screeching national anthem. (ducks)

  21. Don’t get the Carcillo move, can’t be worn out, he was hurting going to the bench once, but I just don’t get that one at all.

  22. This clown coach carcillo Dorset. Whose hitting anyone. Diaz may be a del Zaster in his own end. Stupid

  23. ThisYearsModel on

JT Miller needs to hit to hurt tonight. He has the ability. Go right at them.

  26. hmm, lots of changes tonight. Not sure how I feel about all this. Well, lets go Rangers! that’s how I feel

  27. Stranger Nation on

Wow – Moore out. Diaz scares the hell out of me
Fresh young legs with Miller and Fast in. Fast on 4th line?

  28. Manny-o-war on

Carcillo has been so effective and he can’t be gassed. He’s played half the games!

  29. Eddie x 3 – that enterprise rent-a-car guy (Oshie commercial) could slap him silly

  30. Manny-o-war on

I’m personally really happy to have a coach. That’s able to adjust and confident to do the unexpected.

  31. It kills me not being at these games. But I can’t afford to go to more then one or two. I wish i can be there to support em.

  32. Kenny Albert should trademark the phrase ” shot wide by Girardi”

    He’d become an instant thousandairre

  33. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Greshner’s #4 should be retired. But best ever? I wouldn’t go that far…

  34. We’ll never get back these two minutes of our lives that were about to waste

  35. Will we ever score again?

If Godzilla burst from the ice right now, Pierre would talk about how it’ll affect Pitt’s “super line”

  36. Pp freaking sucks . Nash seriously needs to go away. I can’t fathom watching him roll over boards.

Have a kid in fast out vs Crosby Mallkin last shift brilliant. I’m
    Getting cranky.

  37. They should play 2 point and 3 in front and just aim for your teammates’ crotches. Can’t go 0-30 doing that even if you try.

  38. Does Pierre hear himself? “Goc better thank his penalty killers for bailing him out.”

So I guess the Rangers PP troubles are all due to great PK, not their utterly lost power play.

  39. i gotta say, aside from nashes scoring problem is he looks like boyle skating out there. wheres the extra gear? he looks like a big lumbering walrus out there.

  40. Stranger Nation on

Piere crying because Cindy got hit in the head when he was lying on ice
sorry, you play puck when lying down, you get hit in head

  41. Scratch everyone! Dress everyone! Hit everyone! Score everyone!

    Pierre sad Crosby got touched.

  42. I’m shocked Pierre didn’t jump on the ice, kiss Sid’s boo boo and yell at the rangers and their parents

    And then fellate Sid

  43. _Sonny Boy was told by a Garden employee he wins the most obscure Ranger Jersey of the playoffs so far…… #88 Lindros. LOL!_

He just LOST his title to someone wearing Gomez #23. LOL

  44. Where the hell is MSL….he looked better in regular season when he wasn’t scoring

  45. The NHL should ban these on-the-bench interviews. The only team that gets it right is New Jersey. No Between The Benches stupidity during their home matches.

  46. ThisYearsModel on

Diaz looks good so far. He knows what to do with the puck when he gets it.

  47. Izzy Mandlebaum on

I thought they ordered all the Ranger #88 Lindros jerseys burned?

  48. Isn’t “Malkin” a gum disease? Or is it the act of getting that disease? As in ” to Malkin”

  49. ThisYearsModel on

Well Zucc……you are adept at shooting directly into Fleury’s glove. Too bad.

  50. Izzy Mandlebaum on

This looks like the first pre-season game, just before the first guys are sent to Hartford.

  51. I’ll take the PP, but the refs missed that 100% and just saw blood and him on the floor.

  52. Why did Diaz shoot short side on Fleury when there were like three Rangers positioned for a far side rebound?

  53. Stranger Nation on

    richards is playing hard tonite
    Nash wants to score

    lets go boys!

  54. Amazing that the closest ref didn’t raise his arm on that play. Looking right at Neal/Fast….atrocious.

  55. Norm Merton on

1-31. Don’t forget the PP goal that counted everywhere but in St. Pierre’s cranium.

  56. Norm Merton on

Rangers gave Pens nothing. Pens gave Rangers next to nothing. Good team D’s tonight.

  57. Manny-o-war on

What concerns me the most is that Marky Mark and the Flower Bunch is playing well.

  58. Longer lines to the men’s room then at the Black Sabbath concert in ’73.

  59. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Pierre – “Sid, I really want to kiss you on the mouth”

  60. Granted, ORR, we shouldn’t be complaining about someone who will actually shoot from the point.

  61. Manny-o-war on

I think the last thing we should focus on is Diaz’s shot location. It’s not easy to aim from the blue line. At least he puts pucks on net

  62. eric- remember when gabby went like 2 1/2 games without scoring that time and we were like wtf? kill him!! hes garbage! there was a time when scoring slumps were eventually broken out of. it will happen. looks like tonight he may get probably not.

  63. Diaz has 3 SOG in just 1 period. Going into game 10 tonight:

    McD: 14
    Moore: 9
    Staal: 9
    Klein: 8
    Stralman: 6
    Girardi: 6

    That’s dismal…

  64. pouliot has a better chance of scoring before nash or st louis. btw, hes kinda sucked too hasnt he? 2 early goals and then nothing.

  65. Papa Bear….black n blue concert with Blue oyster cult opening….loud n nice. Loved Dio though Heaven n He’ll top 5 metal album. I’m done with hockey.

  66. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

JR – “they do so well of getting the pucks in deep”

  67. Yes MSL stinks a lot, want to luv him but looks like he is handling a grenade

  68. Manny-o-war on

Hey, why don’t I just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? I just may! What’d ya say

  69. Manny-o-war on

Yeah. tournament down in Florida. I hooked my ball in the rough down by the lake. Damned alligator just POPPED up, cut me down on my prime. He got me, but I tore one of that bastard’s eyes out though. Look at that.

  70. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

JR should do standup. He wouldn’t even have to have any material. Just stand there and talk.

  71. Hedberg “Paranoid” musak playing in the background of MSG while I wait on Line. Freaky.

  72. Manny-o-war on

Quite a large and economically diverse crowd here at the Michelob Invitational.

Mesothelioma must be a drag….never see other diseases get much airtime…

  74. Papa’s complaining about the line to the men’s room while I’m over here trying to put food on the table.

  75. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Poon tang doing poppers. Can’t be good for his stroke

  76. Staal Wart on

How is it that Diaz is the only player set up for one timers?
Wouldn’t one timer shots be top priority?

  77. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Pierre – “poon tang, I want to kiss you on the mouth”

  78. Izzy Mandlebaum on

never see other diseases get much airtime… There’s Billions in compensation money out there. Like blood in the water to land sharks…

  79. Obviously against an all world player, but that’s probably one Hank needs to stop.

  80. Izzy Mandlebaum on

It’s not over! Rangers will get to twist in the wind for two more games…

  81. If we’re going to hang Lundqvist for needing to stop a breakaway by the best player in hockey, we’re in a bad place.

  82. Eh, breakaway debatable. The D man cut the angle to the net. Beat him five hole.

  83. Who blew the coverage on the goal when Stral pinched? Unless it’s Brassard, I’m pissed at them.

  84. LOL! Remember when we thought Veen-yo was a genius because of what he did with the Rangers’ power play? So much better than Torts! Right?

Well, when you can’t score on a 5 minute power play on home ice in the playoffs…that’s what happens

  85. Norm Merton on

Pens with stultifying team D here. Rangers may have seen the last of their grade-A chances.

  86. I’m playing golf tomorrow out of state, might just be done watching these guys if we get shut out by this joke.

  87. Manny-o-war on

Yea. Hanks been great. Staal let the one guy you don’t get behind you get behind you.

  88. Staal Wart on

Don’t know about you guys but I can really tell Nash wants to win…
He just doesn’t want to do any of the heavy lifting.

  89. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

NYRfan – what time does Torts’ game start? I can’t find the listing.

  90. Hey let’s not cut Richards or trade Nash and we will all meet back here in late Sept. Sounds good?

  91. Yeah, at least set the pp w/o a goal record.

So we got that going for us.

  92. The Pens have no legs right now. Gotta score before the end of the period.

  93. @rangersreport

Lot of posts being rung tonight: Pouliot, St. Louis, Jokinen, Zuccarello … at least.

  94. there u have it. its just not our night guys. we are playing pretty good just bad luck and no nash or st louis. hope diaz scores his first before nash.

  95. Has a playoff team ever achieved a perfect inverse relationship between talent and desire among their forwards? We’re approaching it if not there.

  96. ThisYearsModel on

Much better effort tonight. Same result so far. I despise 5-hole goals.

  97. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Rangers killed the Pens power play. It’s in the grave right next to theirs.

  98. Manny-o-war on

St. Louis pointing around and directing traffic is infuriating me. Is that normal?

  99. At least St. Louis showed up for one round. Can’t say the same about Nash.

  100. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Pierre – “coach Blysma, can I kiss you on the mouth?”

  101. When you take Dorsett and Moore out of the lineup, it’s just a reminder of how poor the Gaborik trade was…especially when Gaby is winning games for the Kings in the playoffs…

  102. This is ridiculous. The Pens are playing terribly and can barely move, but 2 break aways and it’s 2-0

  103. MZA having all sorts of problems handling and passing the puck the last two games.

  104. Norm Merton on

Zook with no idea how much time is left in the penalty. Game over. Too bad — they’ve been playing well. Lundqvist NG on the breakaways again.

  105. Manny-o-war on

Zuccarello pulling up in no mans land there, with Hank smacking the ice, is UNACCEPTABLE. That puck HAS to get deep to prevent that exact situation

  106. ThisYearsModel on

2 consecutive brain dead plays by Richards and the puck is in our net. We have all the chances, they have both the goals. I like the old Henrik, who saved breakaways. Of course, I would like it better if we would stop giving them up. That’s 3 tonight.

  107. That one is on AV, I said to my son you don’t put a slow forward Richards on the point with 20 sec on the power play, STUPID beyond believe. Well after the other night Stevie Wonder could see this coming. If I was them I would , slash n spear the siht out of us

  108. I mean, we need Hank saves, but how much can you ask? Offense the problem again.

  109. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Now the question is can the Rangers score before October?

  110. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Give ZUCCO the C !!!"...says Greg L. on

    We can’t buy a goal.

  111. This is most frustrating game because we should be winning. I’ll say this again, the Pens are playing absolutely terrible right now and are prime for the taking.

They can barely move and the Rangers have been missing by inches.

  112. That goal isn’t on Richards. 100% on Zucc there. When there are a few seconds left on the PP, you have to get it deep.

And add that to the tally of goals of guys coming out from the box. Game is over.

  113. Norm Merton on

“Imagine if that would have went in.” No wonder our kids don’t speak and write good.

  114. does stepan just take like a million seconds to shoot? That’s like the 120th time this series where he got stripped while winding up

  115. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Carp – are you watching stepan? He looks like a banter player out there.

  116. Sure am, KEEVI. just looked up his stats, too. 9-13-22 in 54 career playoff games before tonight. Underwhelms.

  117. it’s almost worth paying $200 to sit in the nosebleeds just to NOT hear Pierre on tv

  118. I don’t mean to pick on him, Latona. It feels like he is missing in action (as we are used to seeing him) and might be a reason why this team is struggling offensively…

  119. Manny-o-war on

At least if Nash and St. Louis are in the same line we have three lines that might score.

  120. Norm Merton on

Penguins got a little loose there at the end. Regroup in the locker room, will not give them a sniff in the third.

  121. Just want to point out that Nash isn’t hurt. This is who he is. I’ve said for 3 years now (since before the trade), he’s a pond hockey all-star. Give him tons of space, he’ll dance and spin like Oksana Baiul on his way to a pretty goal.

Whenever he plays teams that play lock down D and don’t give him space to stick handle, he’s completely ineffective. How many times in the last three series did he have the puck and instead of protecting and trying to get on the outside of the d-man did he try and do a fancy move through the legs to get back to the slot when the space wasn’t there.

Gaby would go missing for a period or two, but he’d show up around the net and pop in one or two when needed. Nash isn’t scoring much unless we play horrible defensive teams…you know, the ones that don’t make the playoffs or go far if they do.

  122. Izzy Mandlebaum on

This game feels like the time I went to summer camp and it rained EVERY day.

  123. I’ve watched enough rangers hockey in my 26 years to know they arent scoring 1, let alone 2 to tie and 3 to win.

    -Chris, 26

  124. ThisYearsModel on

I can’t tell how many times I have seen this play. CARP—what year was it when they were all over Montreal and got killed on a counter attack breakaway by Claude Lemieux? Lost a couple games in OT that year. They deserve better than this score tonight, but SOS for us, I guess. They have played a much better game than least night and are further behind.

  125. Maybe Brassard will score in triple-OT, after tying the game with consecutive goals in the 3rd, for the hat trick?

  126. Just trade Nash. That’s all. Trade him the first chance you get.

Nash is going to end up like Heatley. A former goal scorer who’ll be on the 4th line of some team. Trade him before he completely loses his value.

There’s a gullible GM out there that still believes in the BS “change of scenery” scenario.

  127. Just face it we will never be good enough to bridge the gap Btwn us and the penguins and bruins. A key is a pp which we don’t have. Another is center depth which we lack a number one.

I have read all the posts but if I hear this nonsense the pp looked better at this time of year it’s about results nothing less.

  128. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Not to sound like a broken record, but I cannot believe bad #21 is. He really telegraphs an already super slow and weak shot constantly…

  129. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Wait a minute. Gaborik is now good again? And Nash is bad? I gotta pay attention more. It changes constantly… Do we now “make the trade” still? Is Torts better yet, or do we wait until the next game to bring him back?

  130. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

    Yea. Eric is right.

It’s not like we aren’t getting our chances. Literally NOTHING is going our way tonight in the puck luck department. Oh well.

  131. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

Well Steinbrenner would’ve stormed into the locker yelled his ass off and fired the batting coach, in this case make it the genius who is charge of the pp

  132. I honestly don’t know if Pittsburgh is simply one to two steps better than the Rangers or if the Rangers are one to two steps behind–see all the missed passes and the pucks bouncing off players’ sticks after trying to receive a pass–just due to fatigue.

  133. Watching 24 tonight was a MUCH better idea. :-)

Bottom line – Rick Nash was a colossal mistake. Same as Gomez and Drury and Redden.

Can’t wait to be done with the big piece of garbage. No pride whatsoever and no heart to compete in the playoffs. Time to start tossing those #61 jerseys on the ice. Maybe THEN he’ll get a clue.

  134. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

NYRfan – it’s more likely than Torts ever winning another game I suppose.

  135. Definitely 3rd best in the East. About time for our greatest hits as we watch the summer of hell unfold before our eyes> keeping Richards n Nash.

  136. By the way Stepan is another loser. Clearly not slotted correctly as he’s far from a number.

  137. Za'rat (TheOtherGuysGreed) Jones on

You’re a bunch of giver uppers.

    Pozy pozy pozy!!

They will no doubt, 100% guaranteed win this series.

    I did it before.

  138. Was Hank pounding his stick again, alerting for the jack in the box play? Maybe he should get a siren.

  139. When all is said and done, I dropped Finster on this night and the Rangers and Dolan, with his transformed palace dropped a Rinaldo on me .

The lines to the men’s room……….. I left my seat at the end of the first and got back at the 13:54 mark of the second.

  140. It’s pretty remarkably remarkable how quickly the Gaborik history in NYR has been rewritten. “At least Gaborik went to the net all the time”….if by all the time you mean you mean the Boston OT game and Capitals 3OT game, then yes. Otherwise it was speed and one of the best shots in the league.

  141. ThisYearsModel on

JR: Corey Perry missed an open net in overtime, and changed the mentality of the game.

  142. E3, would you trade 20 regular season games and full playoffs from Gabby for a whole season of Nash?

  143. BickelsPickle on

I hope the Brooklyn Islanders get a nice jersey. So close to home to not go to games. COEXIST

  144. Should have signed Parise. Should have kept Dubi and Artie.

If anything, Big Easy Nash should have been taken for peanuts on the dollar with COlumbus taken some salary, since Howser was in charge of the circus in Columbus at the time and Nash demanded a trade to NY…

    Should have never traded Gaborik.

    Should have not fired Torts…

  145. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Gravy – stepan wears #21. Are you sure you’re talking about that guy? He sucks.

  146. Izzy Mandlebaum on

How do you describe the Rangers playoffs since the lockout?

    Stinko De Mayo.

  147. SIOUXper WIN Tonight on

Fast & Miller have played 45 games total. Scored 3 Goals.

    Ranger LOSE.

    And get shut out again!

    Book it!

  148. Izzy – I never wanted the Nash trade to happen. Carp and I battled it out about that both before and after the trade. We also battled about the Isles being better and I seemed to lose that one…lol

But I was always a fan of keeping Gaborik and that team together. The move to get Nash was always a huge mistake to me, even before it was made because he’s always been overrated.

John – fatigue has nothing to do with it, the Pens are just a much better team with a worse goaltender. Vezina trophy winners don’t win too many cups in the cap era unfortunately and while I’m happy Henke stayed, we probably won’t win with him in the pipes (which is also unfortunate).

As for fatigue, the Pens were off for 3 days I believe before the series. Rangers only travelled to Philly on game days and stayed in NY. They played 1 extra game. That isn’t going to kill good team from beating another good team. Rangers are just above average while Pitt is one of the tops in the East.

  149. BickelsPickle on

I think the Brooklyn Islanders will win a cup before the Manhattan Rangers. If only McD, G, Staal, and THE get traded to the Isles………… #wishfulthinking

  150. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Gravy – your question is akin to would I rather cancer or two heart attacks ;)

  151. He certainly has the last six games. I don’t see Brassard or anyone else lighting it up.

  152. Manny-o-war on

I thought getting Nash was a no brainer. Unfortunately he now is a no brainer. I was wrong. Never again will I root to trade heart and soul guys for scoring. Ever.

  153. Nash had 42 points in 44 games last year. Before the concussion problems, he was fine.

  154. Just purchased two beers at the adult beverage concession. Threw the Nice fella a 10 spot; he’s working hard. He said as I was going away, “thank you sir, see you on Wednesday? I responded; “fat effing chance!”

  155. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Given Torts and Dubi’s deteriorated relationship – torts probably pushed hard for that trade….

  156. SIOUXper WIN Tonight on

I know my boy isn’t going to get a shot in the playoffs, but they need someone that can score a goal.

No Goals, and No Grit, this team is softer than Dairy Queen.

  157. “We have two very highly paid forwards who have a tendency to completely disappear during games. What should we do?”

“Trade for another! You trade for another! I swear, I can’t even _think about_retiring until one of you atleast begins to understand what it takes to be a GM in this league.”

  158. I knew the rangers were in trouble when sather beat prostrate cancer and appeared to be back running the rangers. I’m not getting excited about this team anymore. Until sather is gone nothing will change. Rangers organization needs a new GM who knows how bring in personnel that can scout and draft well and build a contending team, not a team who can make playoffs just to lose in the 1st or 2nd round.

  159. Still don’t know why they stopped play after cross bar???????? Rangers had puck and buzzing around.

If Nash does not wake up move him at the draft.

  160. Yeah, but saying the Nash trade was a mistake is hindsight. If healthy, he most like scores 35g 30a

  161. Gravy – look at those stats again and see who he put up most of his points up again. 70% of them came against teams that didn’t make the playoffs, and that’s just in the East since they didn’t play the west.

Also, lockout seasons are always weird and guys who played consistently usually do better.

The guy is a 60-65 point, 30-35 goal scorer that isn’t going to carry a team. Justin Williams gets paid half his salary to be just as effective as a third wheel next to Anze Kopitar. That’s why the Kings have won a cup and the Rangers have not.

  162. Manny-o-war on

I would move Nash only because this team isn’t close to winning. They can perennially make the playoffs and never win. So they need to step backwards to move forward.

  163. I’m so goddamn frustrated watching the half-ice stars Sather constantly signs or trades for that I’m really close to saying something positive about Chris Drury. That’s the point we’ve reached tonight.

  164. Jonny, you turned out to be correct on that, the caveat being that this Nash isn’t the Nash for whom they traded (see what I did there, coos?)

  165. _Jonny, you turned out to be correct on that, the caveat being that this Nash isn’t the Nash for whom they traded (see what I did there, coos?)_

I feel like this would make me so much happier if Nash were can’t miss before the issues. He was a risky call healthy, downhill from there.

  166. Gravy – what happens when Tommy and I both said before the trade happened that it would be a mistake?

Like I said, I’ll admit I’m wrong about the Isles battle I had with Carp. He was spot on with that one. I’m taking the Nash trade point to make it even at 1-1.

  167. Happier is the wrong term. I could handle it better if this were a super-talent like Toews or a hardass like Backes who got messed up. Nash was far from a sure thing if Nash kept being Nash, let alone partial-Nash.

  168. WHOA! If we’re reforming the “don’t do it bandwagon”, I better get a seat in the first two rows.

  169. The Rangers didn’t show interest in Parise. Not the other way around…

Parise explaining his “no way’ comment about playing for the Rangers, to Larry Brooks at the NY Post:

“The situation at the time, we had just gone through a tough six games [in the conference final] against them, and it was two days after we lost the Final to L.A., so I was still pretty ticked off when someone asked me about maybe signing with the Rangers,” the Wild alternate captain said.
“Then I saw the headline, ‘No Way!” and I was bothered by the way it looked. *I didn’t want him or anyone there to misinterpret what I meant, so I gave him (Torts) a call and we had a good chat.*”

  170. Manny-o-war on

Meh. Who cares about being right. I would always trade being right for the Rangers winning. In fact I would gladly be downright embarrassed for then to win!

  171. Manny-o-war on

Rangers not winning = me not happy.

Don’t care about hindsight or moves.

  172. Jonny, hard to say because Nash played well before the concussion, and he drove to the net and did all the things we want him to do now. So, results oriented, you’re right since I can’t prove he would have been a better player without the injuries.

  173. Really should have sat MSL n Nash to send a message, give them a rest and have a gritty hustling team and really shook things up…..never happening in Dolan/Sather world

  174. King Eddie Eddie Eddie VI on

Rangers win on Wednesday and series is tied. Season isn’t over yet.

  175. Papa Bear Strategy # 2 …..

Play the last 10 minutes looking to cripple Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Letamg or okinin …

  176. Carp – except this is the Nash they traded for. Who they thought they were trading for? Fine. But my point back then still holds. He only got paid $7.8 mil (a top 4 contract at the time) because Columbus was the only team he was worth that much money too as they didn’t have a true second superstar.

The guy only played 4 playoff games back in 09 I believe against Detroit and he was essentially ineffective. But that’s too small a sample size to see what he can do in the playoffs. He always struggled with good teams though. Oshie is half his size and he beat the hell out of him and scared him to a point that he couldn’t be effective against the Blues. The top west teams usually smothered him. That’s in the regular season. But when crappy teams played him (Phoenix back In the day), he put up YouTube clips once a week.

Either way, when you want to dish out top 5 money to a guy who hasn’t been top 20 in scoring in almost a decade, that’s a terrible trade and I will stand by that point even if he does turn it around.

  177. Olga Folkyerself on

Can’t wait to see Crosby in a blueshirt. Sather will sign him in 2025 for 8 million for 7 years.

  178. And I agree Manny. I don’t want to be right. When I’m wrong, it’s usually a great thing when it comes to the Rangers. Like my prediction for the team this year was way off, and I’m happy it was.

Until this series when I see how far away they are from contending for the trophy.

  179. Carp, I offered, but you never invited.

Don’t know where you hang your hat in the transformed Dolan Palace.

  180. Seriously, just spend the last 10:00 shooting the puck at Crosby’s penis. Please.

  181. I feel like anytime they do get a good chance, we already know it’s not going in because it’s on Stepan or St Louis’ stick…

  182. Just made it home turned on the TV thought not so bad 2 goals down. Staying Pozy… Then I scrolled thru the last few posts here on the blog. Did I miss the bad news bears on ice?

  183. BTW… the Rangers have 2 lines that have the courage to go to the net……brassard and Moore.

  184. if Pierre say Christopher Letang one more time i may seriously throw the flat screen out my 15th floor window

  185. On the flipside, I’m willing to take the pyrrhic victory right now. I was against Nash and against MSL and if we didn’t have them, we’d be up 8-0 because our forwards would actually fight the entire way up and down the ice, not just inside the attacking blue line.

  186. If I have one complaint about AV this year, its that he doesn’t know when to shut down the attempts to win and ramp up the penis target practice.

  187. Anyone who picks Stepan over Brassard did see this game from my seat.

Eddie, not even close….Stepan needs to be gone by draft day along with his buddies Nash and St Louis.

Man. Some dopes paid $700 for tickets to this? What a weak, meek exit to this game. Rick Nash can’t even carry the puck without losing it or falling down.

  201. Why is Girardi on the ice??? He’s getting every shot blocked and he’s losing pucks on the blue line.

5 forwards and Diaz, Let’s go.

Any Ranger you care to name on the PP: legs locked, stickhandling, looking for an open man… I think I see one.,, Wait, the D sees it, too. What’s my next option… am I telegraphing that one, too? Hey, where’s the puck?

Pens PP: one-touch passing all over the place to moving players, as though they’ve practiced it or something.

  208. boxcareddiehospodar on

Keep going 0 – for everything on the power play.
maybe try watching the pens power play instead of making excuses.

  209. Now can the post game on MSG be equally as pathetic. Yes EJ from Buffalo and I’m so pretty in my funky shirts Dugay! Oh almost forgot the al trautwuss

  210. Remember when Rick Nash was an NHL caliber goal score?

It’s okay though. I’m sure he’s disappointed in his production. You don’t have to actually do anything different if you say you’re disappointed.

  211. Norm Merton on

Pittsburgh a much better team, obviously. Hard to know which Ranger forwards they might take and who they’d bench to play them. Hank needs to be perfect and has only been excellent. Still, it’s only 2-1 when it feels like 3-1, so… can the Rangers win an even-numbered game in 2014?

  212. Step-On should NOT even be playing. It’s pretty obvious he’s injured.

His passes are weak. His shots are weak. He just looks weak with the puck.

If Kreider isn’t playing, then Step-On shouldn’t be playing.

  213. Pens are just better. That’s all it is.

There is some good that comes out of this. After playing this paper-mâché team, the Pens will be overly confident going into a series with the Bruins or Habs and get steamrolled.

  214. Malt O'Meal on

What can you say? I know there’s a lot of histrionics on this boards and I often wonder if some even understand hockey but the predictability of this game is exactly why it’s tough to not have a sky is falling attitude about the Rangers.

Of course our PP remained as impotent as ever and of course we got beat twice within a breath of another failed outing – Pierre predicted the first one.

Bottom line is Rangers don’t deserve to win yet until they learn to not shoot into shin pads, do not pass into areas where your teammate is out-manned 3 to 1, do not try to skate through all 4 opponents when entering the zone, and perhaps try to fake a shot every now and then. Only positive was at least Diaz hit the net on most of his chances – no one there to sweep up of course.

This playoffs have finally convinced me that Nash was a bad pickup and Sather has – despite pulling off a few miracle trades – done a pretty terrible job of making this team a true contender. That said, i think you put a guy like Kunitz, Jokinen, or Niskanen on this team and they still won’t score. I think the team needs a big overhaul and let the franchise suck for a few years while they try to rebuild but that’s not happening…we’d be lucky to get 3rd rounders for most of the squad. That doesn’t mean there aren’t bright spots but as a team, they don’t seem to be anywhere close to contending. Pens haven’t been that good…have won a lot of one on ones and seemingly blocked 3x amount of shots then the stats say…and Andre Fluery hasn’t been awful.

This may be done in 5…unless Nash, St. Louis, Stepan, and more than a few others show up somehow.

Gotta love Gabby with that first goal tonight – wish we had a player like that.

  215. _Who thought we would win this series?_

Definitely not Nash, st Louis or Stepan …

  216. Stepan is injured? Since when?

And enough with the injuries. Most players are injured during playoff times. This team isn’t as good as the Penguins. That’s just the facts.

It would be a tad better of they showed effort though. Like the Jagr team in 08 lost in 5, but they worked hard each game and had a chance in every one.

  217. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Gabby has 3 goals in 3+ periods. Rangers have 3 goals in 9+ periods. Too much even for Hollywood.

  218. GABY SCORES! 1-0.

    4th line: hagelin/stephan/open

  220. The rangers were fatigued. Oops I said it. It was obvious towards the tail end of game 2.

And you wanna know what. Its another example of how MSG puts the screw to us all. How many times has this story been here, Rangers behind 8 ball because of bad scheduling, and then everyone of the paid MSG people try ramming it down your throat its not an issue. Why? bc its MSG’s doing? Squeezing the construction in, forcing the team to have to open two seasons on the road for the 1st month. This situation with the Garden having booked events that they can’t cancel or reschedule now. The Garden feels like they pay and take care of their players enough to do whatever, and they must feel like the fans are mindless zealots who they can pass everything over. Why doesn’t the Garden get heat for this stuff more in the national media?

    We played really well.

    McFluery won it for them.

    We only let in two.

My books , its hard to take but all in all we need to score.

  222. Orr – that’s fine but everyone is injured. If he’s playing, he’s healthy enough to play. So no excuses. It doesn’t help that he has a 38 year old that was milking assists off a 60 goal scorer for the last three years or a 29 year old pond hockey all-star on his wing. They have there guys that need time and space on one line and not one guy, like Kreider or Hags, that can open it up for them.

  223. leetchhalloffame on

Can we buy out Nash, Richards, St. Louis, Stepan, Brassard, Sather, Dolan? Disgraceful to be shut out 2 games in a row by Fleury and that vaunted Penguin D.

  224. What is it with all this ‘Marc Andre Fleury,’ ‘Marc Andre Fleury,’ ‘Marc Andre Fluery’ Can’t they just call him Fleury and get it over with? It’s like grammar school.

  225. J.Moore was doing nothing for NYR. Diaz stepped in, played well. Had the right idea on the PP.

I’m not saying Carcillo would have scored, so don’t even mention it, but I have no idea why this moron takes out Carcillo in favor of Fast.

  226. Norm Merton on

Pens’ secret weapon: if they’re having a hard time scoring, put someone in the box and score coming out of the Ranger’s “power play”. AV needs to give his 90 seconds to try to score, and then put five guys back to defend the Penguin coming out of the box.

  227. Box – good luck filling that 1st line with three 1st line guys on FA. That hasn’t happened since the 70s.

JPP – Pittsburgh didn’t play last night too? Must’ve missed that memo. The Pens are fatigued too. They got their cheap goals and defended. A great away game on a second night of a home and home by them. The fatigue excuse is irrelevant.

  228. Carcillo and Dorsett should both have played. Plus, so long as fighting is allowed, we needed a fight.

  229. Not that it mattered but Miller and Fast don’t bring much to an already lame party.

  230. But as for the new york rangers team and players, I think they need to get some rest and we’re gonna see their best on wes. Wednesday is the biggest game of the season. These guys are gonna bring it.

  231. SIOUXper WIN Tonight on

I wish the Rangers would get a snarly D-Man like Greene. He’s so tough to play against.

Perhaps they need a goal scorer like Gaborik. Just saying. Gabby has 6 goals – Nash 0.

  232. Richie available for interviews. “When we get momentum…” He actually said that.

  233. Malt O'Meal on

I’d have to disagree with the Fluery stole this. I do think we played well and Hank was pretty good…as was Fluery (and the posts). Problem..and what for me makes it hard to have a positive attitude…is that the Rangers are all too predictable. You just knew the PP was going to let us down big when Fast got clipped – it’s so predictable that even the tv people start talking about it before the PP starts. And you knew the Pens were going to make good on their opportunity as soon as we squandered yet another one of ours.

If your PP is not going to even come close to competing at this stage, then you don’t deserve to win. And that’s true even if the Ranger PP goes 6-6 and they win the next game. They could have scored one PP goal both nights and it probably would have changed the outcome of the game. And sure they are losing a lot of one on one battles because they are fatigued but tough shart. Good teams overcome..teams that deserve to win and get the lucky bounces don’t let fatigue lose the series for them.

Teams with a bunch of has been stars and a terrible PP like the Rangers lose these games on their own….not because fatigue or opposing goalies or bad breaks.

Anyone see that Ducks 4 – 3….I don’t think Rangers could do that twice in a season

  234. They cant rebuild, Lundqvist is too good and in his prime for that.

If they had competent offense they could win a cup on his back.

  235. boxcareddiehospodar on

why not give mcilrath a chancew? oh no can’t do that because he adds toughness

  236. Ha ha ha. Jonny D, you must of missed the memo about 5 in 7. And I think it is a selective choice of yours to in fact miss that memo.

Did you see the nice little graphic NBC showed with all the days Pittsburgh had OFF and the rangers played?

  237. Rob in Beantown on

The penguins had like a dozen shots on goal. The rangers had 35 and some good scoring opportunities. Totally a winnable game.

Why did the refs blow the whistle on the no goal if they weren’t calling it a goal on the ice? Made no sense at all.

  238. kid’s not ready for preseason NHL games, never mind a playoff game against the most skilled team in the conference down 2-1.

  239. Olga Folkyerself on

When you lose back to back shutouts, you don’t need toughness. You need scoring…

  240. Malt O'Meal on

Carp, have you ever heard Rangers staff talk about practicing shots from the point to learn how to 1) get it through at least and 2) actually on net more times than not?

Serious? Do they even practice that at this level because it doesn’t seem like the Rangers have really known how to do that for several seasons…that’s gotta be a huge drag on the PP just in and of itself…then you can move onto slow shooting, passing into the area where the PK has collapsed, being too cute, and overall just sucking

  241. JPP- Nah I did miss it. I thought they played the night before the Rangers game 7. But I’m probably wrong. Just frustrating watching the effort level of this team sometimes when they show it in spurts.

Box – glad you are wishing for it. I’d love to see it too.

Too many liberties against our players.

If mcilrath can’t play then get something for him.

Tired of drafting these kids and they are never good enough to play.

If kreieder/miller/mcilrath played for many other teams they would be playing every game and take the good with the bad but play them.

  245. Malt – the superman equipment makes it easy for opposing teams to block shots. Plus the O-zone is bigger so the distance is further than it used to be.

Most teams that shoot from the point have many shots blocked. The good teams fake shots or purposely shoot wide while dragged wingers to the point and opening up space in the slot for the 3rd guy high. The Rangers either crash everyone or crash nobody instead of staggering how they attack the crease, hence why they don’t get those bounces.

When they were scoring, they spread if out. Pittsburgh has taken away those lanes though and the Rangers don’t have the space to pass out of there anymore.

  246. Carcillo and Dors are fierce on the forecheck and both have been successful all year at disconcerting and aggravating the opposing ‘stars.’

  247. Manny-o-war on

Carp, then any insight into why the Rangers seem to be so bad at getting shots through – esp. on the PP?

And, do you know what the PP is designed to do? Assuming that it is executed flawlessly…just shots then rebounds or the slot or backdoor? When we do score a PP goal it doesn’t really seem to me to be a set fact i feel like a lot of the time they aren’t even set up in the PP when we score

  252. Toughness doesnt mean anything, toughness doesnt win games anymore games than the Rangers can. Ask the Flyers.

Skill wins games, you had a tougher team in 2012 and they didnt get it done anymore than this team can right now.

Gaborik has insane skill, he is literally winning playoff games.

  253. Hate anything that says ‘submit.’ If I hit send,’ I send and say what I have to say, take it or leave it. I’m not ‘submitting’ anything. :)

  254. Malt O'Meal on

JonnyD…good observation. Pens PK has been good and Adams is a beast out there…kind you’d love to have on your own team. So then it is a skill imbalance more than Rangers PP strategy and personnel being useless. I still think a better team adjust and makes the Pens pay eventually – especially when you are giving as many golden opportunities as the Rangers have been getting in the playoffs. That is probably the real NHL/Bettman/NBC conspiracy – knowing the Rangers PP is so bad, they have forced the refs to give them lots of opportunities.
