Rangers-Penguins: Five things to watch & my second-round picks

Five things to watch as the Rangers face the Penguins:

The schedule: It’s ridiculous. It’s absurd. It’s reality. The Rangers, by Game 3, will have played six playoff games in nine days. Only in the NHL could this happen. Blame NBC for the first three, arena unavailability for the last three.

Dirty birds: People made a lot out of the Flyers’ after-the-whistle stuff in the last series. Well, Pittsburgh is probably as rugged a team as Philadelphia, maybe more so, and Brooks Orpik (who’s injured), James Neal, Tanner Glass — even Evgeni Malkin and some of the skill players — play on the edge between whistles.

Striped men: Which brings us to the officials, who have just been across-the-board atrocious throughout the season and these playoffs. No consistency game to game, never mind in games. There is already a perception among Rangers of a bias toward Pittsburgh. True or not, it will be discussed.

Off the Marc: It’s going to be a story line in this series, and in every series Pittsburgh plays — how one-time Stanley Cup champ Marc-Andre Fleury performs or fails to perform. He has imploded many times since his moment of triumph, in 2009.

Power plays: They can win games and series, and lose games and series. The Rangers were lucky their horrid power play didn’t cost them against Philadelphia.

My second-round picks:
Penguins over Rangers in 5.
Bruins over Canadiens in 6.
Blackhawks over Wild in 5.
Mighty Ducks over Kings in 7.

I would like to see your picks.

  6. Can’t believe it’s game day already. Still recovering from my game seven bender, hope our boys are better prepared.

I hate the Flyers but have a healthy dose of loathing for the Penguins.

    LGR !!!

  7. eddie eddie eddie on

The Boss, its opposite day….you actually mean the rangers in 5 :)

  8. Carp , not sure what you mean between the whistles?

We know OrPik hides and turtles after the whistle.

  9. Jeff in South Dakota on

It’s not that I hate the penguins, I do; it’s the NBC love-fest for Skidney Slewfoot that really is over the top.

  10. Orpik not playing is pretty big. Now the Rangers’ knees are pretty safe. Just have to watch out for Neal targeting the head.

    Rangers in 5 (or 4-7)
    Habs in 7
    Wild in 6
    Ducks in 7

  11. Miami Pimp on

Id take THE in that state over any of these other clowns. Especially Kentucky Fried POULET.

  12. Sam Carchidi ?@BroadStBull 13m

Simmonds on Rangers: “I still don’t think they were the better team.”

wasnt there someone else recently, maybe last year or the year before who also said the Rangers werent the better team? Was it Ovechkin? Simmonds was invisible for 6 of the 7 games. Daniel Carcillo had 3x the impact on the series.

  13. Sioux per HAT TRICK on

    My second-round picks:
    Rangers over Penguins in 7.
    Bruins over Canadiens in 7.
    Blackhawks over Wild in 6.

    Clean slate – new series

  16. Jeff in South Dakota on

RANGERS IN 4, Godzilla stomps Skidney into a discolored patch of ice.

  17. Sioux per HAT TRICK on

Game Winning Goal: Marty St. Louis

    Rangers win 3-2

Something tells me Hen-rik could set the table with a shutout.

  18. SIMMONDS: “yeah, if there was a game 8, we woulda won it in Philly and eliminated them.”

  19. Booby,

    Continue drinking moderately.

Respectfully fromYour friend and fellow bonehead,

    Papa Bear

  20. Simmonds has a lot of nerve- didn’t think a dark guy could ever be so invisible on a white sheet of ice as he was in game 7. If he really believes they were truly the better team, there’s something wrong with his brain-I guess he’s truly a Flyer now.

  21. Flyers exit interviews are going on right now:

Paul Holmgren says: “Give Rangers credit, they played a good, fast game”

Of course next he comes with a beauty “Flyers can win cup with current core of forwards”

  22. That’s sweet of you Bear but I’m currently on vacation with the whole family, so, you know…

Apologies to all the nice folks struggling to put food on their tables.

  23. Manny-o-war on

Mrs. Manny and I are sharing a bottle of wine on Metro North train. Does that count?

  24. Rangers are about to open up a 2nd Round series against the hated Penguins.

Doubt anyone here gives a rats butt about what the Flyers are doing right now or what Paul Holmgren has to say?

  25. Manny-o-war on

@sbaickerCSN: Raffl has L elbow bone chips, needs surgery. Waiting for info on whether Couturier needs sports hernia surgery says Homer.

@sbaickerCSN: Steve Downie is having surgery on both ears to improve his hearing, says Holmgren.

  26. Manny-o-war on

High class, Eddie. I’m a huge fan of Sterling. The middle class mans Silverado.

  27. Manny-o-war on

We’re having a _Bodan Roan_ 2012 Pinot Noir from Napa (St. Helena)

  28. You’re right, Wojo. But the mere sound of “Flyers exit interviews” is like Moonlight Sonata to my ears.

  29. My second-round picks:
    Rangers over Penguins in 6.
    Bruins over Canadiens in 7.
    Blackhawks over Wild in 6.
Mighty Ducks over Kings in 7.

    Book it!

  30. I just picked up a bottler of Redbreast 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Wine-heads, Put a little of that in a your glass and sip it!!!!

  31. Stranger Nation on

Is Pierre between the benches or is he sitting on the Pens bench?

  32. Forgot to mention in all of my stories and posts that Taylor Pyatt has been a prucha.

He’d probably be good for three goals in this series.

  33. Boy, this schedule is brutal. Why does the NHL hate the Rangers? You would think we would be the chosen ones but apparently not.

  34. Malkin didn’t hit it with a high stick….but he swings and misses the puck but hits Hanks arm, head and shoulder. If contact like that is made with a skater……penalty. No doubt.
