Rangers at Canadiens … It’s Go Time!

[polldaddy poll=7963739 align="left"]
Game 82.habs
Rangers at Canadiens.

In case you missed it, Philadelphia won in OT in Pittsburgh today, meaning that the first-round matchup will be Flyers-Rangers for the first time since the 1997 Eastern Conference final — the final playoff  appearance for Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky and Mike Richter, among others.

Columbus can still finish with the first or second wild card.

If the Blue Jackets win in Florida tonight, they get the first wild card and play Pittsburgh. If they lose in any fashion and Detroit wins tomorrow in St. Louis, the Red Wings get the first wild card and a trip to Pittsburgh and Columbus goes to Boston. If they each get one point, Columbus gets the first wild card, Detroit the second.

Got it?

Ya boys, 9-2-1 in their last 12, close out the regular season with a game that means nothing to them in the standings. But it means something to Montreal, which will play Tampa Bay in the first round, but can still get home-ice. The Habs are a point behind, but have the tiebreaker. Tampa plays at Washington Sunday.

Cam Talbot starts in place of Henrik Lundqvist.

Ryan McDonagh (shoulder) said he’s ready to play, but will be held out until Game 1 of the playoffs. Dan Girardi will sit out, replaced by Justin Falk, who hasn’t played since Dec. 29. Martin St. Louis will also be rested, replaced by Daniel Carcillo. Chris Kreider (hand surgery) remains out.

After the game, vote for the Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left.

A Pgh reporter said Bylsma claimed Hartnell went after Letang becz he recently had a stroke. “Dumb comment,” Berube said.

Go Time! Meaningless game, so being from Quebec AV is being nice by resting Ryan McDonagh instead of rubbing him under the noses of Habs fans. By far the best deal of Sather’s tenure. One of the few good ones.

  3. ThisYearsModel on

As for the playoffs…..the goon squad will be in full force. Nash, McDonagh and St. Louis will have bullseyes on them. Rangers will have to onion it up to beat them.

    ok, back to editing photos
while keeping one year, both ears on the game

  5. Under the old playoff format, we’d be facing these same Canadiens in the 1st round. Without home ice advantage. Scary.

  6. But now instead of the first round, we get to play in the “Divisional Semifinals”.

    Well isn’t that special.

    IT IS TIME!!!!!

  8. This can’t be pointed out enough: In that Audi commercial of the little girl reading mean tweets about Ricky Gervais, her comedic timing is absolutely spot on. Hilarious.

  13. Flyers postgame says they prefer home games next Tuesday 4/22 and thurs 4/24.

Problem is 4/22 Miley Cyrus concert at Wells Fargo.

Can they cancel a concert for hockey.

  14. Well, there are about 12 different guys … which ones do you guys want to see? Pinacchio? Carchidi? I think Rob Parent does a really good job. Let me know in the next day or two.

  15. Whose got better chance vs Pitt

    Jackets or wings.

I say wings so therefore I root for panthers tonight.

  16. It got annoying when I think the Caps started to whine about something and that went on for a couple of days.

But it makes life easier for me not having 10 extra tabs opened :)

  17. Absolutely like Biron in booth and happy to know that my ever allergy is over with Chico resignation.

  18. glad AV is resting the players I said he should rest on here the other day. I don’t remember the poster who commented that they shouldn’t rest Girardi, so he can play 82 games is mind boggling.

  19. I don’t think so … I just think they can’t buy him out if he’s injured during the buyout period. I could definitely be wrong on that.

  20. carp, I just read the buyout rules on cap geek and there was no mention of how you couldn’t buyout a player if injured.

  21. figures, Montreal treatment. How Montreal didn’t get the instigator is what the nhl is all about, mickey mouse club.

  22. I get it that older arenas would have limited space on the bench and not enough room for the back-up goalie. But this is a new building. wth?

  23. Stranger Nation on

    Salmon Joe love fest…

poor Richards was sat, awwww too bad he sucked
“He really proved he wanted to play in NY” – for $9M, i might as well get in shape and try.

  24. @Dave_Stubbs

Goalie Cam Talbot still perfect lifetime vs Habs: 22-save shutout Nov 16, stopped all 5 1st-period shots tonight

  25. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Slow period , not too bad considering Price is the only reason we are not winning.

We rested St.Louis because the little guy has a fast heart beat and after the trade and the goal-less drough , he needs a rest to concentrate on the real task in hand..the playoffs.

Mc D and Girardi are being rested so that next game they play..the hits will count.Kinda like caging a few tigers.

Hanks sitting out cuz his emotions need to focus on the Flyers.

  26. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

No time to relax , Zucco needs a goallllllll!!!

These games are fun , no worries tonight!!!!

    Beat these guys!!

  27. @PLeonardNYDN

Henrik Lundqvist was sitting on a stool across from the Rangers’ bench at end of their hallway. Now there’s just the stool #wheresHank

  28. Carp, you know if you’re going to be traveling on the road with the team this postseason?

  29. doesn’t look good for the early games … maybe later in first round, Cally. I’m in no great rush to travel, personally.

  30. Torts’ car seat soon moving back to CT for the summer — or permanently — where he can be neighbors with his text-pal MSL.

  31. Next intermission, somebody do me a favor and just peek out at the ledge and make sure nobody’s out there. thanks.

  32. not impressed with Montreal tonight. If Montreal plays like this in the playoffs they better hope Price stands on his head every night. Good Luck with that Montreal.

  33. If we end up losing this game, that means we’re backing in to the playoffs, right? (s)

  34. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

As the Three forwards sit out tonight’s game ( McD,St.L,Girardi)…one is getting the “C” sewn on his jersey right now.

Game one , we will have our new Captain.

  35. I think it’s the only interesting decision left, Voice. I’m sure Moore stays in and Diaz out when McDonagh returns, IMO.

  36. I can’t believe I’m saying this but Carcillo should definitely dress over Fast or Miller or Lindberg or any kids against Philly…Carcillo has earned it.

  37. I say Fast. Better third line option. Plays aware and responsible. Good wheels and a nice, quick, release.

  38. Just wondering, though, if Carcillo was going to play with Richards and Hagelin in the playoffs, why wouldn’t he be there tonight instead of Fast(h).

  39. Dom Moore was really good for MTL a few years back when they went to the conference finals. Maybe move him up to play with Richards and Hags and put Carcillo on the fourth line? Tough call.

  40. I think they tried Moore and Boyle and Carcillo all playing up a line and didn’t like it.

Fourth line will be critical in that series. Keep it together.

  41. I think the Richards line by default will be Hagelin and Fast/Kreider since the others have mostly worked.

  42. Does Talbot increase his value with every start, or do we really need to wait a while before thinking like that?

    Guy just continues to impress

  43. I think his value is good, not great, because of small sample size. With his contract, I think they bring him back and if he plays like this, maybe trade him during the season for something good.

  44. I mean this in the best way possible, but hopefully this is the last we see of Talbot in goal for the rest of the year. If he’s playing in a playoff game…I don’t see how that could be a good thing

  45. Latona: I’m a Man City fan, but I’m picking Liverpool for the three points. They have a more dangerous offence in Suarez and Sturridge.

  46. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I put VBIED on 4th line and dorsett with secretariat and Hagar in playoffs.

  47. Return on goalies hasn’t been too great lately. Don’t think he’ll fetch what he’s worth…and I believe he’s gonna be a real good pro…and we HAVE to move him.

Sounds about right for the NYR.

  48. JBytes, agreed on SAS, but I think Liverpool will be under a lot of pressure with not only the importance of the game but also with the anniversary coming up. We’ll see how they handle it.

  49. So much of that mayhem could be eliminated by replacing the poke check with a simple body check. A novel idea, I know but come on, play the man.

  50. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Unless someone just blows the doors off on an offer for calmbot, no Falking way I trade him.

whatta way to lose the game
    they played quite well
except for that Three Stooges moment with Diaz and Klein

  52. Thank God the Rangers got that point! Nice, actually, to have it in the bank that they can outplay the Canadiens in their own maison.

  53. Kevin Kline and Rafael Diaz are why the Rangers aren’t winning many playoff rounds this year

  54. Rob in Beantown on

It took a penalty shot for the Habs to score on Cambot in 120+ mins of hockey

  55. It was. Miscommunication, but blame Diaz more. To bad I thought for the most part he played a decent game.

  56. SIGH!!!!

overall team played well minus top D pair
    and MSL and THE
of course Calm was his usual self
just what a weird (sad) brain freeze of a way to end it.
i thought Diaz had some speed. looked like he could have caught up with gionta

  57. It was Miscommunication, but blame Diaz more. To bad I thought for the most part he played a decent game.

  58. Thanks Rob!!

Diaz won’t play second season, thought Klein was fine and maybe better offensively tonight.

  59. anyone know how the breakaway rule is written?
wondering if he thought it would be a 2 minute penalty rather than a penalty shot
because gionta wasn’t in position and stopped from shooting the puck on goal
    just tripped at mid-ice

  60. Diaz played a good game, but that play was just horrid. You have to have 4 on 4 awareness.

  61. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

It’s not over untill Orr Voices his famous words…

  62. NHL Rule 57.3 Penalty Shot – When a player, in the neutral or attacking zone, in control of the puck (or who could have obtained possession and control of the puck) and having no other opponent to pass than the goalkeeper, is tripped or otherwise fouled from behind, thus preventing a reasonable scoring opportunity, a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending side. Nevertheless, the Referee shall not stop play until the attacking side has lost possession of the puck to the defending side.

  63. Look at those kids, going nuts on the bench. THIS is why they should send college kids to the Olympics.

  64. Slats is probably at Ryan Smyth’s last game, which is somehow a Canadian holiday.

Maybe Slats’ best draft pick since early 1980s.

  65. too late
already wondered if Slats is hanging out at the Union locker room
    like some puck bunny
    holding a stack of contracts

  66. Admiral Akbar on

I hate losses. If there was a ledge for this game, I’d be on it. Shutout By Montreal Again.

  67. Admiral Akbar on

At least someone can admit they’re an Isles fan.

    Fishsticks Anonymous.

    First step is admission.

  68. CARP, don’t you dare write those words.

You know full well that these no-talents zero chance of winning the Flyers series without THE in the lineup.
