  1. Have to take an early lunch and close to the door Doodie!

Do you like the Fast callup?

  2. Rob in Beantown on

I didn’t realize Ovechkin was (almost) last in the league in +/-. I know it’s a problematic stat, but that’s crazy for the league leader in goals.

  3. Rob in Beantown on

I would think Ovechkin is unmovable. Given that it’s no secret he is a one dimensional player who would trade for him and pay him $10M/year?

  4. All depends on where you want to pin the blame, right? It can’t be good, but how much is bad Ovechkin and how much is bad teammates? If you strip out the plus and just look at league leaders in minus, Norris Karlsson leads the league at minus 96 with second 11 less (Yandle). All players on ice for 75 or more non-PP goals …

    Erik Karlsson: 96
    Keith Yandle: 85
    Andrew MacDonald: 81
    Dustin Byfuglien: 81
    Jason Spezza: 80
    Milan Michalek: 79
    Dmitry Kulikov: 78
    Alex Ovechkin: 78
    P.K. Subban: 76
    James van Riemsdyk: 76
    Kyle Okposo: 76
    Taylor Hall: 76
    Phil Kessel: 76

  5. Agreed with that, Rob. Unless you find a cap floor team desperate for a draw (and maybe with a huge Russian community?), it doesn’t look smart. Unless he says he wants to come to NY and NY only. Then it makes sense to throw 3 or 4 legit assets at Washington and clean up their problem for them.

  6. Manny, where is the *pomp and circumstance* for LW -who doesn’t bother to come around just kicks tail in BBB-?

  7. I bet you started hating statistics when you realized the only metal album sales now are to you and Stralman.

  8. Rob in Beantown on

The problem with the cap floor team scenario is that Ovechkin is actually going to get paid $10M for the better part of the next decade. His contract wasn’t front loaded, it’s evenly distributed.

  9. It’s not hard to see that teams exploit the caps and Ovie with his effort. The fourth man in always has a great opportunity when Ovie cruises around without a care.

  10. Did he win!?

CONGRATULATIONS TO LW3H and his Fantasy team *HASHTAG ORCHID SHOW* which was named only to poke fun at me.

  11. Rob in Beantown on

Congrats LW3H!! You made our fantasy league very boring by dominating it from start to finish.

  12. I just prefer statistics that actually mean something. Not elongated hyper complicated algorhithms that prove that if Ovechkin wears red socks underneath his skates then he is 2-16 in the shootout.

  13. “Plus/minus I understand, because its mainstream, but looking at the plus and the minus _separately_??? C’mon, basement nerd!!!”

  14. _The problem with the cap floor team scenario is that Ovechkin is actually going to get paid $10M for the better part of the next decade. His contract wasn’t front loaded, it’s evenly distributed._

Yeah, I didn’t mean poor, just spending averse teams. Like if they have to pay someone, may as well pay a name rather than two or three non-names.

  15. [If we’re here now] Carp, yes, I do think Richards should be bought out. And you can count on me to continue to ridicule the scapegoating. Nothing makes me crazier than ignorant groupthink — as though your number three scorer and number one minutes man, one of four guys to play every game this season, is holding his team back.

  16. Although, if we buy out Richards, I really don’t fully trust Sather to not see it as a good idea. They can take uppity Stepan off our hands, probably John Moore, Miller because he’s an immature 21 year old, probably a throw in 1st or two.

  17. _as though your number three scorer and number one minutes man_

You see nothing wrong with that pairing, do you?

  18. I just did some spreadsheet paradigms and it looks like if Richards is on the bench he’s not as effective as when he’s on the ice. Might want to consider that.

  19. Manny asked me to run these numbers off line so I did. Points per 60, unadjusted for playing time so if a hypothetical player had a full game more than 2nd place on the PP and two minutes total on the PK, he wouldn’t be adjusted down …

    Mats Zuccarello: 2.70
    Derek Stepan: 2.26
    Rick Nash: 2.16
    Derick Brassard: 2.15
    Chris Kreider: 2.14
    Brad Richards: 1.99
    Benoit Pouliot: 1.98
    Ryan Callahan: 1.86
    Carl Hagelin: 1.85
    Ryan McDonagh: 1.35
    Dominic Moore: 1.32
    Brian Boyle: 1.07
    J.T. Miller: 1.05
    Raphael Diaz: 1.01
    Kevin Klein: 0.91
    Derek Dorsett: 0.90
    Michael Del Zotto: 0.89
    John Moore: 0.84
    Dan Girardi: 0.75
    Martin St. Louis: 0.75
    Daniel Carcillo: 0.69
    Marc Staal: 0.60
    Justin Falk: 0.50
    Anton Stralman: 0.44
    Taylor Pyatt: 0.22
    Jesper Fast: 0.00

  20. So, one could argue that Stepan and Nash are doing very well since they kill penalties for about (guessing) 2 minutes per game.

  21. If there was another poster named Booby that I also liked, I would say that I like Boobies.

  22. It would feel weird if I dopplegangered myself so someone else would need to step up there.

  23. Norm, I agree with the scapegoating thing. I don’t think Richards got nearly enough credit early in the season, and I think he’s been awful lately, and mediocre a lot. But fans always scapegoat, whether it’s Willie Huber or Colin Campbell or Chris Drury or John Tortorella.

Once Richards is gone, it will be Nash. Or St. Louis. Or Lundqvist.

  24. @SNHockeyCentral RT @erlendssonTBO #tblightning have signed general manager Steve Yzerman to a four-year contract extension, had one year left on his deal

  25. Is Yzerman extended because he purposefully left MSL off the Olympic team in order to cause the rift that would eventually allow him to trade MSL without any backlash? Mind blown.

  26. Mister Redundant RevertBack D: Interesting list.
Anecdotally, A.Mac from the Isles seems to be a real plus for the Flyers, (as has been M. Streit). Wonder if most of that stat came from his days on the island?

Norm Black-n-White: The things you offer as plusses for Brad, in context, are easily seen as genuine rational minusses, as has already been suggested.

Yeah, the scapegoating is shallow and silly and not even worthy of the twelve-year olds. But your defenses are not a whole lot more convincing.

  27. Kane Brewery for Kane. Not sure I would make the deal. This would be one of the toughest decisions in my life.

  28. Gravy: Sioux is Kristo:-). Nice take.

But he has absolutely no bias when he’s decidin’ who can best help the Rangers:-).

  29. I have the car manny
Is paying for the gas and Sioux has the moving company.

Kane will be arriving to the rangers on draft weekend.

Kane in ranger uniform oh baby

  30. I just got really excited because eric’s post made me feel like it’s gonna happen exactly as he said it. Which would be weird but neat.

  31. Eric,

Package Kristo, with McIlrath, and a pick for Kane.

That way I don’t have to travel so far to watch him play :)

  32. NotSo – I was *hoping* he would get the call. Since fast already had 8 games,(0 pts), Miller 30 games (AV’s dog house) so I was thinking Kristo might get a shot.

Given the Shot, I was hoping he would have a game like “Stepan’s 1’st game” and the Rangers would reward him with more games. Wake Marty Up. Score tons of goals, and go out and win 16 playoff games.

It kind of sounds like a Direct TV commercial…..for Ranger fans.

  33. I can’t wait, eric!

I met Sioux. The only thing he has in common with Kristo is having a damn super model for a wife.

  34. Kane is a legit power forward whose 4.5 cap hit makes it even

I need to replace my cally jersey I would in a minute for Kane.

Once we get eliminated because we have no size and don’t score enough in playoffs here’s our guy.

  35. So whatever you do don’t call him up, don’t give him a chance to score goals, don’t even think about winning more than one playoff series.

Just hit your dad in the stomach, and don’t expect the Rangers to win the cup for another 20yrs.

  36. Kane is 22 years old. Has 198 POINTS in the NHL. (Kreider has 40pts)

4th overall pick in in ’09. With Tavares, Hedman, & Duchene going ahead of him.

Kane has already had a 30 goal season in ’12.

He hasn’t even hit his best years yet.

Not a lot of players on the Rangers I wouldn’t trade him for.

  37. To get him that is.

Can’t move Nash, Lundqvist, or St Louis.

But you could buy out Richie and the Spend the money on Kane. 5.25 for 4 more years.

Now that’s what you give up a 1’st rounder for. Not 2 for MSL at 39.

  38. Before I repost from the other thread, Carp, can you tell us which one you want us to be on? I need to know where I can be most irritating. Anyway, here it is:

“Sorry to hear about your portfolio, coos, truly, but that’s why we have Norm to kick around. Here’s one to get your blood boiling and forget about all those silly dollars and cents: Richards “pure” +/- is +27. (I assume you’re OK with AV not using him on the PK.) Zook & McD, the only legit MVPs other than maybe Lundqvist, are +31 and +12 respectively. McD has been on the ice for 93 goals. In second place, Richie with 81. Once again, I agree he is not the best Ranger forward. That’s Zook by a mile. And once again I suggest that to say he’s a negative is absurd. His is not a style you enjoy (I suspect you are not a fan of the non-hustling Cano either?) but it’s a style that has worked, or AV (who wants to win games) would not include it. The playoffs, though, are where we’ll see which cream rises.”

  39. Stranger Nation on

_That way I don’t have to travel so far to watch him play_

Do the Jets have an AHL team in Grand Forks?

  40. Jets are hurting in goal. Has Cam had a good enough year to trade him, his numbers look good. Winnipeg needs a top line Center – I’m thinking they would want Stepan, and a top prospect that can score.

  41. Backup goaltenders bring back nothing but a 3rd round pick lately.

I would give them Kreider and Stepan. That’s how much I love E. Kane. Then just sign Stastny. Brassard stays on the 2nd line.

  42. Kreider is more affordable and under team control for longer. That may change next year depending on his bridge contract, but I suspect it will still be the case. So, based on Kreider’s potential, and Kane’s inconsistency and injury history, I’ll take my chances.

It’s the same argument why I’d take McD over 95% of defensemen. It’s the value of the cap hit.

  43. Trouble is Tickets to the Peg are very tough to get. The rink only sits 15,000, but is always full, and probably the loudest NHL rink, do to its size.

  44. Stranger Nation on

There are 3 parts of the NHL season:
    Brad Richards Stats
    Oct – Jan; 56 games, 39 pts; 14 PP Pts (-5)
    Feb – Apr; 23 games, 10 pts., 3 pps 0G/3A (-3)
Playoffs; _see where this is going…_

But, my fav stat – in 7 games with 3+ days of rest:
    4G/5A; 9pts (+4); shooting 19%
*sit him for his own good*

  45. Why are we creating another huge hole by trading Stepan, to fill a medium sized hole?

Even if you think Kane is better than Kreider (overall value, of course he’s a better player today), he’s still only so much of an upgrade.

  46. Orr – Rangers have Talbot for $562K for one more year.

So he’s tradable, do to his value, but he has really been a steal as a backup and plays solid minutes behind Hank.

Rangers have zero depth behind him.

  47. If “pure +/-” includes PP and PK, that’s the worst stat I’ve ever seen used here to support Richards. “Hey, check out how many more goals for than against this guy with 5 full games of PP time and 2:00 of PK time has!!!”

  48. Kane hasn’t hit 30-30, came close once (30-27) and his problem has been staying healthy. He hasn’t played more than 74 games in a season.

  49. Gravy – I think Lindberg could replace Stepan. He’s a Sweden MVP, and the point leader for the Pack. He’s going to be a really good center. But Kane value would demand a NHL Starting Center. Step’s that guy right now on the Rangers. The points are about the same for both players.

  50. _Even if you think Kane is better than Kreider (overall value, of course he’s a better player today), he’s still only so much of an upgrade._

Yup. In a bubble you do it, knowing you have to build a roster with some high priced guys already locked in, you can’t. You cry, but you can’t.

  51. In case you guys didn’t see it, *John Gibson* is getting his first NHL start tonight for the Ducks.

  52. I’m not pinning my hopes on a kid that can’t crack an NHL 4th line to come in here and be our #1. Zuccarello was the MVP of the SEL at one point as well. And he’s not a first line player.

  53. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

So if I read mr d post correctly, ds370 and gnasher, once their pk time is figured in, should be lower on the list…correct?

  54. bull dog line on

Kane is a good player, but doesn’t it concern you that the Jets are scratching him?
I figured the Rangers were going to call up a forward. thought it might be Kristo, but Fast is ahead of him, so he makes sense.

  55. Even so, I still don’t think he has much value, Sioux.

I like Kane, but I don’t know, these trades haven’t really been working out too well for us. We keep gutting the team to bring these guys in, and we’re not getting any better.

  56. Sioux, but that *if* is kinda the point. He hasn’t done it yet. Plays like Callahan, who almost no one would want to sign to a long term deal.

  57. Translation: “This is the first time I’ve heard he’s plus 27 overall.” Now actually think about it.

  58. If Lindberg can play on our 3rd line I will be shocked. He was defined as a physical Center but that was in the Swedish Elite League which is not the toughest league on the planet.

  59. I agree Orr. You would think Nash, Gaborik, & Richards would have done a whole lot more than they have. And MSL sure hasn’t been the shot in the arm the Rangers traded for ….. yet!

  60. Sioux, even if he made it through 82 last year, and even if he kept scoring at that pace, he’d be 29-27.

  61. I think it’s the opposite, Wicky. It’s not adjusted for their PK time, so they’re actually performing better.

  62. Manny it’s a skilled league. The Swedes know how to skate and score. Granted they don’t hit much, but on Olympic ice they don’t grow up playing a physical game.

  63. Gravy – He’s 22. He would just be getting out of college. His ceiling is about as high as it can get.

  64. So you wouldn’t trade Talbot for Kane straight up even if the Jets offered, Vicky?

  65. So you’re serious, Norm. You see that as a player positive and not a fully usage dependent non-stat?

  66. Sioux, I’d love the guy on my team. I just don’t see how trading Kreider for him makes us that much better.

  67. Or not. You can lead a horse-hater to water, but you can’t make him think.

  68. If you want to get “pure”, MDZ was a plus and Girardi and Staal are minuses. Am I on to something???

  69. Boyle and Dom Moore have our worst “pure” forward numbers. Are they secretly our worst defensive forwards???

  70. Pretty sure we’re onto something big here. Someone call up Hockey Prospectus guys!

  71. bull dog line on

    Mister D,
plus minus can be a very telling STAT sometimes, not always. for example, last year Boyle was the only minus on the team. very reflective of the way he played. Stepan for a large chunk of this season was a minus. he is normally a plus player, like he is now. but his minus early in the season told the story of how he was playing.

  72. Sure, Bull Dog, you can get some good stuff out of goals for and again. But when you start to tout a guy as a big plus who plays only PP and never PK, you’re being a major goofball.

  73. First Kreider and MacD
    Now Texeira and Robertson
    Athletes need more steroids

  74. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Oh, I would think if they were getting more ice time regardless of situation, their points per whatever would go down…

I think a good backup especially with a goalie getting up there in years is vital.

Our defacto 1c (who is a 2c) is a bit more movable IMHO because you can probably find another 2c pretty readily ;)

Besides, a 2c will bring you more in return than a trade than a back up more than likely!

  75. I need to walk away for a few. A guy with 287 more minutes on the PP than the PK getting praised for being on ice for more total for than against is too much for this boy to handle.

  76. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Where were we trading talbot straight up for Kane? I must have missed that one…in which case yes.

I wouldn’t trade talbot just to trade him…NATW, yes I would trade him just to trade him, but not talbot.

  77. Wicky, Step plays about 2 minutes more than Brassard, but also has more points. So, it makes sense that they’re close to each other on MD’s table.

Agreed that Step would bring back more in return than Talbot :)

  78. All I am saying, no more and no less, is that Richards has been on the plus ice 27 more times than he has been on the minus ice. If you want to spin that as a case of a lazy bum coasting around while his teammates score, the puck occasionally bouncing off his skate, and the sort of bum who hustles to the bench if he can get there in time to avoid a minus, that’s the creation of a scapegoater who wants something to be true regardless of the facts. Zook’s plus-31 I assume is a stat in his favor, especially given his uber-excellent penalty-killing. AV doesn’t use AV on the PK because he knows how to coach and how to put his players in situations where they are more likely to succeed. In any event, I know I’m not going to change anyone’s mind about Richards. I think he’s been good, not great, and the gang thinks he should be benched. Not much overlap there.

  79. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

You don’t get a minus on the PK, you don’t get a plus on the PP, you can only get a minus on the PP and a plus on the PK.

  80. Norm, I praise Richards when he is good and knock him when he’s not, but that statistic doesn’t really help your case.

Much in the same way that Stepan is “penalized” because he gets more TOI due to PK, where he is much less likely to put up points.

  81. Just looking at the Jets, their biggest whole is Center. They might just take Lindberg & Kristo, they need a better backup goalie than Montoya, and Talbot could possible put up better numbers than Pavelec.

They have only 7 forward under contract for next year. Kane is the only movable top propect, with a no movement clause. So they could get the most for him than anyone on there roster.

Unless they want to deal Big Buff.

  82. The market for Kane would be bigger than the one for Kesler. I don’t think the Rangers have a match.

  83. Which is why, iWicky, the regular +/- stat is so useless. It’s a “fairness” stat that sees a 50-goal scorer like Ovechkin get it in the neck for his lousy +/-. His overall +/- is +24. So he’s had a problematic year, to be sure, but only an idiot would bench him.

  84. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Who said Lindberg is physical? A while back someone said hrivik was a physical forward?

Where do you guys come up with this stuff? Neither guy is “physical” IMHO.

Lindberg might be a mike york sort of player, but no one is going to confuse him for Kesler.

  85. Gravy, my “case” is that Richards is scapegoated. I’d point out his flaws more often if there weren’t a dozen of boneheads on it like a dog on a bonehead. I will look for you in the future noting his good play, should that unlikely event ever occur in our lifetimes, ha-ha. He has not been great, but he’s been a valuable contributor. If there were an obvious replacement somewhere, fine, but there isn’t, and AV has gotten a +27 out of him overall. It absolutely should be higher, but it’s a positive overall, especially considering the [recently slumping] PP, which has been so much better this year.

  86. “If you simply ignore that the player I’m defending only gets favorable TOI …”

  87. You’re right, Gravy.

Remember how trading our depth worked out in the Nash deal? It completely backfired. The Gaborik trade helped a little bit.

Gonna have to trade a key guy and some more depth.

Keep making these trades, NYR will be a one line team and force Slats to keep overpaying for guys like Richards, Drury, Gomez, etc, to fill some spots. It’s not like we can rely on drafting to fill those spots since it’s been so damn average.

  88. Brad Richards’ agent would reject pure +/- on the grounds that it would be disingenuous to tout.

  89. I read somewhere Kesler did NOT want to play for AV, or didn’t want to play in New York.

  90. Nineteen more wins and Richards can hoist the cup and pack his bags on the same day

  91. Rangers aren’t that far away.

If you replace Richards with a Center that can win a face off and score. Put a Pruster/ORR type player on the 4th line, and one Blue line Bruiser with a canon. The Rangers will be set.

  92. Richards: better FO% than Brassard or Stepan. Not as good as Boyle or Moore.

  93. My car leaves for Winnipeg sat June 28th. I got room for one more. Manny shotgun Sioux in back a spot for Kane. Any takers

  94. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

IMO Norm is the one wearing the “rose colored glasses”. He sees what he wants & the rest of us are all blind. Richie Rich SUCKS! Now its Fast on his line, another player for him to set up to fail.

  95. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Norm – are you such a contrarian in your everyday life? Just axe in…

  96. Ria – look at the bright side. Another FAST player to show Slats how *SLOW* Richie REALLY is.

Now wrap him up in bubble wrap, to make sure he’s safe to buy out in JUNE 28th.

  97. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

Actually Norm I’m not if I had a dollar for every blind pass Richie Rich makes that causes a scoring chance for the opposing team I could probably afford to go to a live game, and after he gets rid of the puck & just STANDS & watches I could probably view more games in person. I’m entitled to my opinion just like you.

Sioux Sather is 70 his eye sight isn’t what it use to be even with glasses. HE’ll never admit what we see on the ice.

  101. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

    Hi Ria – what up?

It’s not tha Richards makes blind passes that wind up on opposing sticks, it’s just the intended Ranger wasn’t in the Vicinity of brad’s pass…

  102. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

I don’t do “cookouts” Norm & I would decline the invite so don’t bother sending me one.

  103. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ria – I’m having a cookout…care to join me and the other two eddies?

  104. “Someone should stay silent more often.”

You got that right – zip it, Manny!

  105. Ah, I need to explain the joke. No problem, I’m keen to help. The “cookout” in question, Ria, is a figurative one, one to which I (the dastardly contrarian) will not be invited. You, however, despite your distaste for figurative cookouts — a gluten issue, perhaps? — will be welcomed with open arms. There will be a figurative Richie piñata there, so bring your figurative baseball bat.

  106. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

Yes Alain or whatever handle your using this week I would if not for posters like you & your buddy Norm. Hi e3 & its the DENTON gang not the Dalton gang according to Norm. I miss chatting with you guys in the midnight hour. ;=)

  107. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Norm – this is where you’re wrong. You are invited to any and every cookout we have….it’s business not personal. I like the fact that you stand up for your convictions….I just think you’re crazy….but who among us isn’t?

  108. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

I would be more than happy to attend E3. I read awhile back that your from my old ‘hood ,wouldn’t it be something if we really new each other! LOL

Very likely if Montreal splits next 2 games they will have 2 seed and home ice locked up vs Tampa with nothing to play for.

  110. If Montreal loses to Chicago beats isles then Tampa would have to beat Toronto Phil and Columbus prior to both teams last game this weekend otherwise Montreal locked into 2 seed prior to ranger game

  112. @rangersreport

Some day NHL owners might give Brendan Shanahan the authority to teach punks like Rinaldo a lesson. Or maybe not.

  113. Everyone thinks Sather is pretty terrible and has to go which means that’s groupthink which means its obviously very wrong because the majority cannot be right. Contrarianism for its own sake forever!!!

  114. That’s a joke of a suspension given his history and the plain-sight intent of the hit. Anything questionable in our series and I hope someone goes after Giroux’s wrist. At some point employing this clown has to be a detriment to more than on-ice opponents.

  115. I think Sather has had a successful season as a GM, so far. Good offseason pick-ups in Pouliot and Moore, good coach fire-and-hire, good six years to McD, good Zucc. re-sign, Hagelin re-sign, Stepan re-sign, Girardi re-sign. Sather’s not my cup of tea at all, but he’s had a good year, I think.

  116. Forgot the obvious – Callahan for St. Louis. So far, no scoring but pretty good overall. Need to think long-term on this one obviously. Iginla comes to mind.

  117. eric, better bring a UHaul in case Big Buff wants to come along.

Plus/minus is a terrible stat and that overall plus/minus that includes special teams is even worse.

  118. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Sather had a great year. Even the MSL trade will look good once Marty starts lighting it up….the Gabby trade – was excellent…..if only Clowe had remained healthy…..

  119. Agree that it isn’t Sather’s worst season, and in fact it’s been pretty good, though it hasn’t been great given that MSL blew up in his face and Nash became a perimeter player. And it will be his worst and an organizational disaster if Richards is injured and can’t be bought out.

  120. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Love Callahan but he wasn’t worth the years/money. His situation was a casualty that, sadly, couldn’t be avoided

  121. Explain, Carp, why it is even worse. I get it that overall +/- is not as fair, but at least it tells a simple story: on for more goals for than goals against. If you’re way off the team +/- one way or the other over the course of a season, how is that not valuable information for a coach, provided there is further analysis for each player? In Richards’ case, I think both +/- stories are too simplistic. In Ovechkin’s case, spectacularly so.

Outside of poor roster construction, unnecessarily prolonged contract negotiations with Step, not buying out Richie Rocket in off-season, overpaying for a 32 yr old Goalie and trading our only productive two way veteran forward Capt AND 2 first round picks for another small one dimensional player…Sather has done a FANTASTIC job!!!!

  123. Well, I’m not good at math, but I think if you play every single PP and not a single PK ever, you better have a pretty good plus number. Almost impossible to not have a good plus number. Even on a bad PP. Rangers have 46 or 47 PPGs this season. So you could even argue that his number needs to be a lot higher than it is.

  124. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

E3 Red Hook , South Brooklyn although you wouldn’t recognize either neighborhood today.

  125. I’m not a fan of Sather, I’d rather see them promote Gorton. But it wasn’t two 1st round picks for Callahan unless the Rangers reach the ECF

  126. I would argue — and God, I hate sounding as if I’m defending Sather — that the Stepan negotiations were prolonged because of Stepan’s agent. That Sather would have overpaid if that negotiation was shorter. Just as he would have overpaid if he’d signed Callahan.

Red hook, home of Joey Gallo :) ….Ria – east ny, is the worst slum in all 5 boroughs……

  128. Just catching up on the chat…some thoughts

    1) Brassard is over the inconsistencies? Well then. That’s fantastic!

    2) AV should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Torts until he wins a few playoff rounds, has the best record in the Eastern conference for the regular season, and makes it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Oh yeah, what is this team’s identity again?

    3) Taxes will play into Cally’s contract decision, as will ownership and management. Tell me then, why wouldn’t he want to sign with Tampa Bay? No state taxes, legend as GM, and an owner who is described as the “best in sports”. Again, what is so great about Rochester?

    4) Remember, Cally is a character guy and at the end of the day the Rangers traded him. It wasn’t the other way around. Cally didn’t walk. We only heard stuff through Twitter (which is like a game of telephone). The Rangers were only worried about the risk of him walking away for nothing. Trading Cally was less about cap-prudence and more about trying to win this year, in Slats’ crazy mind.

  129. Sure his number should be higher — but AV has used him wisely to have him, others and the team on the right side of the ledger. Not a bad predictor, right, overall goal difference?

  130. Czechthemout!!! on

Not enough assets left to make a deal for Kane. JT Miller has some value and I think there is some friction going on between him and AV based on the comments AV made about him last week.

I think when we made that stupid deal for MSL, we lost our opportunity to compete for players like Kane and one of the Staal brothers who may both be available according to Dreger last week.

  133. _Rangers have 46 or 47 PPGs this season. So you could even argue that his number needs to be a lot higher than it is._

You read my mind, Carp. It’ll be pretty easy, just a bit time consuming, to figure out what each Rangers’ “pure” +/- should be, I just need some time. Maybe tomorrow. What a cliffhanger!

_Not a bad predictor, right, overall goal difference?_

Predictor of what? Future usage patterns?

This is the team (cumulative +151) overall …

    Mats Zuccarello: 34
    Chris Kreider: 30
    Brad Richards: 28
    Derek Stepan: 28
    Benoit Pouliot: 25
    Derick Brassard: 24
    Rick Nash: 21
    John Moore: 14
    Ryan McDonagh: 13
    Raphael Diaz: 6
    Michael Del Zotto: 4
    Kevin Klein: 2
    Ryan Callahan: 2
    Daniel Carcillo: 0
    Martin St. Louis: 0
    Carl Hagelin: 0
    J.T. Miller: -1
    Anton Stralman: -2
    Dan Girardi: -5
    Derek Dorsett: -5
    Justin Falk: -5
    Jesper Fast: -7
    Dominic Moore: -8
    Marc Staal: -10
    Taylor Pyatt: -12
    Brian Boyle: -15

    That list tells you something?

  134. Also, regarding Sather’s grade this year, MSL has been far worse than Callahan to date. So to call it anything other than “really bad”, knowing there are still two 1st/2nds to pay, is silly. McD was a great signing, but to give that offset credit you have to believe that Sather did something other GMs couldn’t in that negotiation.

Sather had a great 2-3 year run, but dismantling the core he built up has pretty much wiped it out.

  135. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Ria – you must have had a nice view of lower manhattan, yes?

NYR fan – funny thing. Nucks fans are saying that you can’t mention AV and Torts in the same sentence until Torts a) makes the Playoffs; b) wins the President’s trophy; and c) makes a Cup final…

  136. Basically, its like how we *WON* the Nash trade at the time … and now we wouldn’t be able to give him back for AA straight up, let alone plus Dubinsky plus a 1st plus a (fading) prospect.

  137. E3, it’s way too early for people both on sides of the continent to grade either of them :)

I still dont understand the potential two 1’s for MSL. According to Sather himself, Yzerman called to offer MSL. I dont understand the need to include two potential first round picks especially the guaranteed pick in 2015 for a guy who Sather himself refused to admit made them an instant Cup contender. Plus the fact that he is going to be 39 years old in the summer?

And he has been terrible for the 15-17 games he been here. To me his best game was his first and then it all been down hill.

I am still shaking my head about that trade.

  140. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Czech – MSL will turn it around once he shakes free from the Horse in the room, that is, Ritchie Rocket.

  141. What that long list of overall +/- tells me more than anything is what a spectacular season Zucc has had.

  142. Czechthemout!!! on

You think so? They have tried him on every line and every player combo except most of the the 4th line guys. They even tried him with D. Moore because of familiarity and so far I have seen nothing from him in almost a quarter of a season to give me hope of a turn around.

I would have loved to have seen Cally traded for Cris Stewart plus a 2nd if you believe the stuff out there a week before the Del Zaster deal.

Wicky would have loved that deal. Stewart = playable toughness!

  143. I’m not complaining aboot MSL. Guy is a proven winner and great talent. It’s only a matter of time before he breaks out of the funk or retires ;) I kid.

  154. You’re right, it has been a crap shoot that has not gone our way at all. I’m not going to complain too much aboot losing those first round picks. Not saying they didn’t overpay, but just saying “Gorton’s picks” have not been very reliable.

A lot of talent missed because of those picks.

  155. Papa, I hate him too, but my disdain for him grew even when he was GM.

As a player, I would have to say Dave Brown or Dave Schultz.

  156. Very strange. Persons still posting on pre-Charp post until 6PM; persons posting here since before 2 PM. This is why we had insufficient defenses at Pearl Harbor.

  157. I see Norm is arguing his case simultaneously in two courts. I don’t think that Richards is the scapegoat; I think he is the goat.

  158. Czechthemout!!! on

First round picks can be a crap shoot but good organizations always seem to pick up premium talent in the first round. We always get the following “superstars”

Jessiman,Montoya,Korpikoski,Bobby Sags,MDZ,Mcilrath all this wealth of talent since ’03. Many of these picks were top 10 or out of very strong drafts. I think the problem is that the scouting staff is questionable to say the least.

That said, 1st round picks are a valuable asset and can be used to help acquire premium young talent instead of 39 year old players for 1.5 seasons.

  159. PP TOI – PK TOI …
