Rangers-Avalanches in review

1) Mucho confusion in the immediate post-game about what has to happen for the Rangers to clinch a playoff berth. It cannot happen tonight, no matter what goes on in Washington-New Jersey. The Rangers can clinch with two more points, or a combo of points the bottom teams fail to get. It could happen Saturday. Bottom line: if/when they win another game they’re in the playoffs. More bottom line: The best thing that happened besides the point the Rangers got was that Columbus-Philly was not a three-point game. The Rangers are four points up on Philly (which has now won one of its last six); the Flyers have two games in hand, but the Rangers own the tiebreaker, so in effect the lead is five. The Rangers are six up on Columbus, which has two games in hand, but the Rangers own the tiebreaker by five. So in essence they are seven ahead of the Blue Jackets. In other words, the Rangers are almost certainly going to be a 2-3 seed.New York Rangers v Colorado Avalanche

2) And while we’re at it … Been calling it the Lesstropolitan Division all season long. Well, it’s now very arguable that the Metro was the better of the two divisions in the East.

3) About this game. The Rangers did just enough to not win it, and to give it away at the end. They looked like an exhausted team in the third period, in that altitude (no, Doogs, the visiting team does not have an advantage in the thin air). They backed up a little too much, IMO. They had three shots in the third, and I thought they made some critical mistakes in both ends — most notably Mats Zuccarello and Benoit Pouliot with the fancy passing on that 3-on-2 that didn’t produce a scoring chance … and could have put the game away.

4) The tying Colorado goal was a mess. After the icing (and a Patrick Roy timeout), the Rangers had Derick Brassard on the ice with Brad Richards’ wingers for the 5-on-6. Brassard won the draw (a Rangers rarity), Dan Girardi tried a soft bank off the glass that had no chance of getting out, Marc Staal had the puck for a moment and failed to get it out, and Martin St. Louis looked like he was flying the zone for the empty-netter, skating right past the spot from where the tying goal was scored.

5) Then a funny thing happened. The Rangers dominated overtime, got more chances on one shift than they had in the entire third period. And their shooters let them down in the skills contest they sometimes hold after the hockey teams stop playing the hockey game.New York Rangers v Colorado Avalanche

6) Still, the Rangers went 2-1-1 on the trip, are 7-1-1 in nine. They got John Moore back, they got decent news on Ryan McDonagh (day to day, no structural damage, hopes to play before the season ends next Saturday).

7) Henrik Lundqvist. Was good again. He’s rolling now. Again. As he usually does at this time of year.

8) John Moore got it going, with the work of the Rangers best line again. I thought Brassard had a really good game, if one can have a good game taking two not-so-good penalties. I thought Pouliot and Zuccarello were strong again, despite that brain-lock 3-on-2.

9) Daily Nash-O-Meter. That line did some great work on the 2-1 goal, and Derek Stepan showed why he needs to shoot the puck more. In intermission interview with John Giannone, though, Stepan he said he was thinking pass all the way. Anyway, they took away the pass and he shot and it was a rocket. I think Carl Hagelin really fits on that line, as Chris Kreider did when he was playing well. Stepan has really picked up his game the last few weeks. Been a No. 1 center.

New York Rangers v Colorado Avalanche10) Not everything is rosy, even given the playoff race situation and the 7-1-1 streak. Faceoffs continue to be a huge, huge problem. Hard to believe it can actually get this bad with five veteran centers. I have said it before, I think a lot of it has to do with concentration. Then there’s the power play, which is just so last year again. Both of those aspects will be vital in a playoff series, any playoff series. The coaches better use these last 10 days to get that fixed for when it counts.

11) Martin St. Louis. Had some chances. Needs to bury one. Was partially guilty on the tying goal. Had an odd failed move in the shootout. He and Richards showed zero interest in covering the point with Girardi in deep after Dan Carcillo delivered a hit, resulting in the 2-on-1 goal against Moore that tied the game at 1-1. A terrible play by two vets who should know a lot better. Overall, not a good night for St. Louis, IMO. Not good at all.

12) Alain Vigneault had some interesting comments about J.T. Miller and his “commitment” on and off the ice. And that if Miller figures it out he can still be a good NHL player, and if not, he will be a good AHL player. Not surprised about this “revelation” about Miller’s commitment. I am surprised that AV said it publicly. Maybe he’s trying to push Miller’s buttons. The kid has not been very good up here, has been good, I guess, down there. Not ready for the big leagues at all.New York Rangers v Colorado Avalanche

13) Is it just me, or do Colorado’s players seem to, ahem, go down easily.

14) BTW, ex-Rangers fourth-line center John Mitchell re-signed for three years, $1.8M per. I think that’s Brian Boyle’s ballpark. He might get more on the open market. He won’t get much more, if any more, from the Rangers. And if he wants the $2.5M that’s floating out there, and that Brandon Prust got from Montreal, he won’t be here next season.

Games that matter tonight:

Chicago at Columbus, Washington at New Jersey.

  1. Thanks Carp, I know it’s beating a dead horse but Richards is hard to watch. Why was he on that O zone faceoff at the end before the tying goal? Too many brain locks and not enough effort but sure throw Miller under the bus.

  2. Good morning!
Just saw that some questioned that the Rangers would give Zuuc a solid raise because they might be unsure if he would produce as good next year!?
    what do you think?

  3. We lost a skills contest? meh!

Is Boyle really looking for $2.5m?
Wow, bye bye Big Brian “hands of stone, fists of blancmange” Boyle

  4. I think Zucc deserves a raise, he’s earned another 2 years, but i have no idea what his market value would be?

If i compare him to Stepan who has similar tenure and is on $2.3m (rises to $3.85m next yr) – i’d say Zucc is worth $5m over 2 yrs maybe?

  5. Rangers don’t need 93 pts to beat out leafs/devs. Not one tweet mentions devils. Again it’s 92 because of tiebreakers. Zipay Leonard gross incorrect.

Rangers need 1 pt more or devs/tor lose another game in any fashion.

And yes Washington loss in regulation tonight eliminates them from catching rangers. Magic number 2 for caps

  6. Has anyone watched “Last Gladiators” ?
Watched it last night on Netflix – awesome documentary, centred around Chris Nilan. (also made me dislike Brashear more!!)

  7. So UK Ranger, you mean he is not worth more then Hagelin even when he produces more points??

  8. Great review Carp. Pretty good game but that third period was like watching Tort’s Ranger teams when the strategy was to put all six guys in the blue paint. The tying goal surprised no one. Though you have to be happy with the road trip.

  9. Only one point I would argue.

Overall, not a good night for St. Louis, IMO. Not good at all.

That should probably read, not a good MONTH for MSL.

  10. Its waaay more complicated to figure out with this 2 division and wild card system this year – nice one Bettman!

  11. Hagelin is in year 3 (not 4) and is on $2.1m this year. Next year his contract pays him $2.4m. Would Hagelin get much of a raise after that year?
I don’t necessarily think points should be the only guidance too, Hagelin rarely gets any PP time, in the same way that Zucc rarely gets any PK time. Therefore opportunities aren’t necessarily there like they are for Zucc.
I think Zucc will get a 2 year deal between $5m and $6m total – thats just my opinion. He is an RFA too, so UFA market is less relevant.

  12. Ok UKRanger I see your point. But I still think that Zucc has been and is better player in total.

  13. I knew through the whole game when the rangers didn’t convert on 4 or 5 close in shots that they should have converted on, they were going to lose the game and they lost the game.

  14. Great write-up, as always. On #11, though, it looks as though you’re pandering to the crowd. I know the alternate name of this site is Hump Richards, and he did not have a particularly strong game, but that goal is Girardi’s all the way. It’s a complete float, not a pinch but a prayer, and when he sees Carcillo go in late to make it three forwards deep, he’s got to bust it back and across rather than paw at the air. And St. Louis absolutely needs stay with his man rather than cruise behind the net. His man scores. Say what you like, but NHL has a perfect replay of this breakdown, and Richards Anita the problem on this one.

  15. Defending Richards is just weird. The criticism is well earned. Pray he stays healthy and gets bought out.

  16. Anyone else notice Nash standing in the Avalanche crease like he was waiting for a ticket to the game while MZA was having his face smashed into the ice? Not a leader, not even a man. Put him in some hot chocolate and watch him melt.

  17. Looked like they were out of gas in the 3rd at the end of a road trip…fluky goal to tie it but still a good point against a good team. Right on with #13, some of Colorado’s attempts to draw penalties were embarassing. Did not realize that Landeskog was such a cheap shot artist.

  18. Matteau!, you have perfectly captured the ethos. Defending Richards IS weird. None of the cool kids do it.

  19. Stranger Nation on

_Martin St. Louis looked like he was flying the zone for the empty-netter, skating right past the spot from where the tying goal was scored_

This is getting worse than one could have ever thought of. Now we have two top 6 forwards that can’t play with anyone else so AV put Carcillo with them. Carcillo, ok? Yes, that Carcillo. The one who sucks. Actually, the one who looked better than the other two.

So the defenders of Richie the Floater and Dispirited St Louis need to ask themselves why are these two “great” players with some slug.

  20. I thought that was a typical 4th game and last game of a road trip out west in altitude. They looked spent by the 3rd period and I just knew it was inevitable that COL was going to score. I guess they found a little bit of a second wind in the OT though. What bothered me was the faceoffs again. They get COL suck in their own zone for about a minute, COL is gassed and they ice the puck. Rangers win a faceoff and they get great scoring chances. But of course they lose the faceoff, COL clears and that’s that.

I thought the officiating was horrible last night. COL DOES dive a lot, and the Rangers even got away with one.

Overall, it was good they got a point in a game I had them figured to lose. And Philly lost. Now they better win these next three winnable games!

  21. Matty"MARTYSCORED!!!!!!"Boy on

Thanks, Carp, great post, as usual. Getting down to PO posts soon!! You usually kick it up a notch for them, too!!

  22. Stranger Nation on

McD plays that game, we win..period
Diaz looks very shaky out there…no confidence for him in April
Faceoffs: Step, Bros-hard and now Boyle. If he cannot win FOs…big problem
Weak PP: ton of opps, the ‘first unit’ is horrible
J Moore: Great shot, but he cannot let that pass get over on 2on1 goal
Staal/Stralman: way too much stick checks, but ain’t going to change now
Dorsett continues to make plays and get the puck deep

  23. Matty"MARTYSCORED!!!!!!"Boy on

Have to tell you, I would not be upset if all 3, MSL, Richards, and Nash, were dropped from the team and new “stars” were found.

Yes, they each have some individual talents, but they are liabilities, each in their own way. Not worth it.

Nash, at least, can PK. More than you can say, defensively, about the other two.

So much for hoopla around “big name players”

  24. Carp – On #12, care to elaborate with your views on what exactly ‘commitment’ on and off the ice means?

I think I’m clear with on the ice, ie he needs to play better and be more responsible.

What does ‘commitment’ off the ice mean? Does it mean he has a bad attitude? He’s lazy in practice? He’s immature? He’s more concerned about partying in NYC? I’m curious…

  25. Stranger Nation on

    Capt. Callahan: 15 games; 6G, 5A (+4) shooting: 15% (clutch, no?)
    #1 Pick 2014: Alex Tuch – 6’3″, 215 lbs Center
    #1 Pick 2015: Paul Bittner – 6’4″ 220 lbs – LW

Leave me in St. Louis: 16 games: 1G, 3A (-1) shooting 3.1% (not clutch, yes?)

  26. With any two on one with Hank in goal i’d just block the pass in any way i can (not a snow angel!) and back my goalie to save the shot, because he probably will 9/10.

  27. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

Once again ,the opposing team took the liberty of hitting the Ranger d men at will with no repercussions.. just wear the D down .

  28. Have to say i’m curious about the JT Miller thing too…he’s looked calm, reassured and hard-working at times but others you can see why he’s up and down between NHL/AHL.

Although to be fair, AV’s methods have worked with Pouliot this year so can’t question him calling the kid out to the media.

  29. UK – AV is just pushing his buttons. A coach has to use every tool he can to motivate his players. Nice, simple way to send a message don’t you think?

  30. Stranger Nation on

JT’s issues seem to be off the ice

Taste Great on ice…Less Filling on land

  31. If AV wanted to send him down to the Sioux for next weekend I’d be alright with that :)

  32. Off ice as in he could be in better shape? Work harder?

On ice – to play both ends? Get back in time to not get caught short handed?

If only he would shoot the puck into the net, then those high rebounds for easy breakouts – that lead to goals wouldn’t happen.

Sometimes he reminds me of Del Zotto, missing the net by inches, where he could have scored the game winning goal, instead it goes the other way for the loss.

He’ll be a good AHL player, he scores a point per game for them. Someone has to lead the Pack.

Time to pull up the goal scorer…..

  33. SN – Less filling in the net.

4 pts last year (26 games)
6 pts this year (30 games)

I blame the Rangers for trying to fast track this kid. Sometimes 18yr old kid need a couple of years just to *grow up*. Torts messed up the PRA-cess on this one, and AV hasn’t done anything to help his PRO-cess this year.

  34. Doodie Machetto on

I’m sure somebody has probably pointed this out already, but we are actually four points up on the Flyers, which is significant because we now control our own destiny. We haven’t in a long time.

  35. Carp – has Boyle been made an offer yet?

I would be surprised if he turned down any offer from the Rangers.

  36. Really strong 1st and 2nd, terrible 3rd, good OT makes for a tossup game that they wound up on the wrong end of. I think we all would have signed up for a 2-1-1 road trip (though expecting a win in Calgary and a loss in Colorado).

They can’t play like they did in the third, but 7-1-1 speaks for itself. They’re likely heading into the playoffs on a high note, so let’s hope they can make some noise.

  37. I really like Boyle, but again, $2.5M is pretty high, especially if it’s over 4 years. $8M over 4 seems like the wheelhouse to me. That said, they should make every effort to retain Boyle and D Moops. Carcillo I give a take it or leave it offer, if any.

  38. This blog needs an injection of *METAL*. Probably should mainline it today.

Bottom line: The Rangers needed 3 points. They got 1 of them. Just win Saturday or another weirdo combination of a point plus an OT loss or something by the right team and they are in. No need to keep worrying.

Today’s *METAL* selection is from 2013 and is by legendary Scandinavian Progressive Death Metal band *ENSLAVED*. These Viking legends have put out a vast and varying catalog of music in their time together. None better than their most recent release *Riitiir*

I would suggest listening to this one because they are one of my favorite bands and this album is by far my favorite album of 2013. These guys combine and layer different vocal types, keyboards, guitars and just epic, epic song structure. Please do listen.

  39. But Gravy, that is what we all said for Prust and then missed him dearly. If Boyle ends up getting $2.5 for a few seasons the FINE. The guy is invaluable to this team. He’s also HUMUNGOUS (which makes him tradeable at any point)

  40. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t we *4* points up on Filly?

Also, I don’t know anything about this Miller situation, but how can he be fully committed to a team that treats him like a yo-yo?

  41. I hear you, Mannü. And he does play every game. I wouldn’t hate it if they went $2.5M, but I think closer to $2M is more his value.

  42. Yergs – that’s the gamble HE took, jumping into the ring of fire, before he was ready.

AV is simply trying to send him a message. Either it will motivate him to learn, or he will be the “Leader of the Pack”.

  43. @textsfromtorts: hey Richie, great to see u the other day. it’s been too long. really enjoyed our chat about the PP. hope my advice helped!

  44. Manny, I’d rate Boyle valuable, not invaluable. He might be more valuable for what he could bring back given Sather’s track record on trades.

Yergs, isn’t that argument a little like an alcoholic who says he drinks because he has problems? While the truth is that he has problems because he drinks.

  45. Rob in Beantown on

Dom Moore is a free agent too, isn’t he? What he going to get, and do the Rangers resign both him and Boyle?

  46. Good morning, boneheads!

Two teams with great speed. The Rangers can skate with any ream in the league, and are faster than a good bunch of them. The passing is sharp and precise, nice to see. What a difference comparing to previous years.

Yes, they are 4 points up on Philadelphia. Not only that, winning both games in hand won’t be enough for Flyers. They actually have to gain 5 points to move ahead because of ROWs. Columbus is even further removed- 6 points behind and 7 points to gain on NY. The rest of it isn’t much more than math.

The first celebration for me will be when the Devils are officially eliminated.

  47. Fair enough Sioux and Heave Ho. Like I said, I have no idea what’s going on with Miller and while AV felt the need to say something (after he’s been quiet about a lot of things all season), but I DO agree that he’s trying to motivate Miller, which is good.

  48. I’d resign them both. Moore is making $1M this year. He’s played well and will probably make around the same as Boyle. If you can sign them both for a total of $4-4.2M, I think that’s good value. You have Dorsett signed for one more year, so your 4th line is done.

  49. Doodie Machetto on

If Torts had said this about Kreider last year (which he basically did), everyone would be killing him over it. TORTS HATES KREIDER! etc. Personally, I didn’t think it needed to be said to the media.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

Moore and Boyle will both be looking for multiyear 2.5 million deals. I think they both could find it on the open market.

  51. Rob in Beantown on

I would keep them both too. The only problem is that seems like a really expensive 4th line. Do you consider trading Dorsett if you can get a good return and maybe try to re-sign Carcillo to replace him? Not sure what I’d do.

  52. Rob in Beantown on

I agree. I think Boyle gets the money because of his size. Dom Moore could be every bit as good but I don’t think he gets paid Boyle money. I think he gets $2M tops.

  53. I think the expensive 4th line is more than offset by the value of a #1C at $3.1M and a #1D at $4.7M. And hopefully Miller, or some other kid can win a spot on the 3rd line.

  54. Rob in Beantown on

The 4th line’s been really good. Better than the 1st a lot of the season. I think I spend the money to keep it together. One less thing to worry about.

  55. Sather generally stinks with the big ticket FAs, but he did a good job picking up Pouliot and Moore, and re-signing MZA to a reasonable amount (which I didn’t agree with at the time).

  56. Since AV has respected the locker room and kept issues behind a closed door he must feel pretty desperate to voice his opinion publicly about Miller. On the bright side, he’s not writing the kid off and must think he has the potential to make the team.

  57. Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Rangers play Columbus in the 1st round, then Tampa in the 2nd? Talk about storylines.

  58. I don’t mind a relatively expensive but solid 4th if you’re willing to let some kids play on the 3rd.

  59. Miller needs to buck up, and if he feels sorry for himself, then you probably don’t want him on the team anyway.

  60. I’m hoping for Moore at 1yr/1.5

Boyle for 2yr/2-2.5 but he’d have to really want to stay here at that price because somebody will give he 3 years on the open market.

    Zucc for 3yr/2.5-3

  61. These clowns are going anywhere.

MSL is a dead pony (next to Richards, the dead horse).

Flyers will destroy us in 4.

    Book it, (Danno)

  62. And, it’s not like this 4th line is a goon it up, can’t play otherwise line. It’s a legitimate one that you can roll.

  63. ILB

Magic number to eliminate devs is 1. They need to win out and we need to lose out in regulation.

Wash/devs tonight only scenario keeping both teams alive from catching us is a devil overtime win.

Magic number on caps is 2.

I don’t mean to get in gross and Leonard and zipay but if your mentioning leafs still being able to catch rangers not one of the beat writers mentions devils.

It’s a moot point but has to be mentioned

  64. @textsfromtorts Henrik and/or Daniel: how’s your brother doing? The one that got injured?

  65. Gravy

Cannot play Tampa in 2nd round. They get bruins/wild card winner(Columbus)

Rangers get Pitt/wild card winner (Detroit)

  66. *Dennis*: Break down what I’m holding in my hand, right now.
*Mac*: Uh, that is a Dave & Busters power card.
*Dennis*: Yeah. Now – does your Dave & Busters card work at any other similar establishments, like say a TGI Fridays?
*Mac*: Mine does not. Believe me, I have tried. Several locations.
*Dennis*: Yeah, because if you recall I’ve actually been with you on many of those occasions where you tried
*Mac*: Right. I don’t think I’ve tried it enough.
*Dennis*: I think you have, because clearly at this point you should have realized that it doesn’t work anywhere else.
*Mac*: There’s one out in Franklin Mills I haven’t tried, I feel like it might work.

  67. I wouldn’t have a problem with them going 3 or 4 years with Boyle. He is only 29 and has stayed healthy.

  68. Oh, I’m sorry. Well I could put the trash into a landfill where it’s going to stay for millions of years, or I could burn it up, get a nice smokey smell in here and let that smoke go into the sky where it turns into stars.

  69. Rob in Beantown on

*Charlie:* Lemme handle this, Frank. It’s not bullbird. He’s making a few good points. Look buddy, I know a lot about the law and various other lawyerings, uh, I’m well educated, well versed. I know that situations like this, real-estate wise, are complex.
*Lawyer:* Actually, they’re pretty simple. The forms are all standard boiler-plate.
*Charlie:* Okay. Well we’re all hungry. We’ll get to our hot-plates soon enough. Let’s talk about the contract here.
*Lawyer:* I’m sorry, I forgot. Where did you go to law school again?
*Charlie:* Well I could ask you that very same question.
    *Lawyer:* I went to Harvard.
    *Charlie:* Ah, mhm.
*Lawyer:* How about you? Hm? Uh?
*Charlie:* I’m pleading the fifth, sir.
*Lawyer:* I’d advise that you do that.
*Charlie:* And I’ll take that advice into cooperation, alright? Now what say you and I go toe-to-toe on bird-law and see how comes out the victor?
*Lawyer:* You know, I don’t think I’m going to do anything close to that and I can see clearly you know nothing about the law. It seems like you have a tenuous grasp of the English language in general.

  70. That doesn’t sound right, but I don’t know enough about stars to dispute him.

  71. Doodie Machetto on

eric, the wild card teams are not set in stone. Far from it, in fact. We could end up with #Lumbus in the second round.

  72. *Frank*: Feast your eyes on your new business. Knives!!!
*Dee*: You want me to sell knives door to door?
    *Frank*: No! You’re selling vacuums!
*Dee*: I’m sorry… I took out a high interest loan to invest in a door to door knife and vacuum selling business!?

  73. Frank: You’re not calling the cops! They’ll find the bug I’m gonna plant!
Dee: That’s a baby monitor, Frank. You’re planting a baby monitor?
Frank: Yeah, a lot of people are bugging their babies these days… I guess babies can’t be trusted…
Dee: What are you expecting to find?
    Frank: Lot of shady sh*t.
    Dee: Like what?
Frank: Like maybe Bruce is banging dudes!
Dee: Why would that be shady?
Frank: Maybe the dudes are babies!
Dee: What?! Bruce is not banging any baby dudes!!

  74. Yes doodie I know listed that as of today fully aware jackets can catch flyers and that’s what I would prefer.

  75. Rob in Beantown on

*Dennis:* Can I stop you guys for one second? What you just described, now that just sounds like we are singing about about the lifestyle of an eagle.
    *Charlie:* Yeah.
    *Mac:* Mm-hmm.
*Dennis:* Well I was under the impression we were presenting ourselves as bird-MEN which, to me, is infinitely cooler than just sort of… being a bird.

  76. Mac: I think you should bang Gail the snail.
    Frank Reynolds: My neice?
    Mac: Yeah.
    Frank Reynolds: Gail the Snail?
Mac: Dude what’s more depraved than that huh? So she’s not blood related so it’s not that weird.

  77. If MSL were just some guy and not *MSL*, how long ago would he have gotten a night or two off?

  78. We were so used to Torts not giving us ANY info on anything that now when AV gives honest answers we become shocked!

  79. _Over / under: MSL’s new goal drought – 0 goals from now through entire first round of playoffs._

Then scores the clincher that advances us to the ECF, where we get shutout in the entire series.

  80. Stranger Nation on

Sioux – JT is a point a game player in AHL, Kristo…not so much
    J.T. Miller 35 games 12G, 25A – 37 pts +/- (+13)

What 3rd line will he play on – the Richards/St. Louis 3rd line?
Actually, may not be such a bad idea…

  82. Why would CarProblems not want to re- sign? For the first time in his career, he has a coach who sees him as a hockey player and his hands look like little soft baby dog balls that they make golf gloves out of.

  83. “If MSL were just some guy and not MSL, how long ago would he have gotten a night or two off?”

Dunno if he would have. BRAD hasn’t.

  84. SN – That’s exactly where I would put him. 3rd line winger, he has speed, has a wicked wrist shot, and he can be a playmaker for Marty.

They are in the playoffs after Saturday, so give him a few games on varsity. The Rangers might need him to score a goal in the playoffs.

  85. Unlikely that giving Richie or MSL a night off would do anything to motivate either one of them. Giving Richie a seat might better the team. Richie -1 last night with 1 shot on goal in almost 20 minutes of ice, 5 and half of that on the PP. No wonder Miller has AV pissed.

  86. Rob in Beantown on

Did anybody else cringe when Sam said “these are two playoff teams” at the end of the game last night?

  87. For some reason Miller has jumped over Kristo as the bubble boy, yet he doesn’t produce at the NHL level. All I’m asking for is to give Kristo some games and see what he can do for the Rangers. You might be surprised.

Re ferguson…that is awesome. Love the guy. Never seen him in person though.

  89. Robby Bonfire on

So the other team got a free, end of regulation power play because they needed a tying goal, not because the Rangers committed an infraction. Glad the entire universe from here to Mars is ok with that, with just one, little dissident voice.

At least the universal population is in agreement about something. I am happy for all of you, on the condition that you are happy with this bogus, “traditional” result. Now if we can only get the Rangers to lose the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals this way, so we can ALL be overjoyed over farcical rule book technicality endings to these games. Who wants to win the Stanley Cup legitimately, when we can lose it this way? Oh, I see, everybody in the universe except me. Guess I am shouted-down, again.

  90. 7-2-1 in the last 10. Just imagine if Marty & Nash get going, this team could surprise a few playoff teams along the way. The X Factor is the KING, and Henrik is peaking at the right time. McD will be healthy for the playoffs. This team has to use it’s speed, to offset for it’s lack of onions.

*If* Nash could play more “Columbus” type games, and Marty could find that extra goal a game, they have as good a chance as anyone in the EAST.

  91. Rob in Beantown on

I didn’t go to BU for undergrad so I don’t hate BC like some BU fans do. But BC really doesn’t need any more banners. I _was_ pulling for UMass-Lowell, but now that they’re out I guess I’m pulling for the Fighting Sioux

  94. *Mac*: Frank, What the hell are you doing?
*Artemis*: He’s been trying to climb through that trash can for 20 minutes. I’m pretty sure he’s on acid.

  95. Nash played better in the regular season than the playoffs last year. Maybe the reverse this year?

  96. Not going to debate the delima on the faceoffs, they have to be better.

The PK makes up for the PP, as long as one of them gets a goal.

I think this team wins 2 rounds, then lets the “cards” fly in the Finals. Sometimes it’s easier to win when you are the underdog.

It could work for the Sioux, as well as the Rangers this year.

  97. Gravy – perhaps we need Columbus in the 2nd round to wake up Nash. Not like that’s going to happen, but what a series that would be.

  98. ‘Yeah, I believe in the underdog,

The shy kid who gets the prom queen,

And those two lovers hitched at city hall,
They’ve got each other, so they’ve got it all,
Call me a dreamer, say I’m a little naive,
    Oh, but I believe
    In Underdog!’

Interesting comments and another great recap. A few observations……..you cannot be giving up tying goals in the last minute with the goalie out. You have to find a way to get through that, because playoff games are going to be like that every night. You certainly cannot be flying the zone while down 6 on 5 looking for an ENG. One goal in 16 games, out there in the last minute and you fly the zone? I have no problem with the coach calling out players, like he did JT Miller. I am sure there is good reason for it. The problem is when moves like MSL’s last night is not called out. AV has done a marvelous job with Pouliot. Not so much with Richards and MSL so far, IMO. Both get far too much ice time for the production they provide.

  126. Gravy – I’m down Malkin, Toews, Okposo, and now my top goaltender.

I have a dog-breakfast team, you could cover it will all kinds of GRAVY and the dogs still won’t eat it.

    Stick a fork in me.

Here’s hoping the REAL Fighting SIOUX show up on Thursday :)

  127. Stranger Nation on

The Big Money players never get called out. When it gets to the breaking point, for instance, down 0-3 in a elimination game, that is when you sit your high priced non-performing ‘star’.
Until that point, you are showing up the GM and you don’t want to do that…

  128. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Next season the league won’t run on statistic but rather on my observations of each game. I will look at the matchups daily and select a winner based on who I think played better.

  129. _Doc – 1 goal per game out of that line would be better than what they are getting right now. Yes?_

I’d be more worried about what’s happening on the other end if you add a kid like Kristo to 19 and 26.

  130. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Lol. I like the sentence about how the players would prefer a buzzer in their uniforms that tell them when to change.

  131. Isn’t the problem with Kristo and generally every point leader on each AHL team that they’re all sub-6’0″ and sub-200lbs?

Not to say some small guys don’t make it to the show but I have to imagine based on size alone a lot of these types of players just don’t get the look

  132. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Is the Masterton less relevant during Contract negotiations than the Lady Byng?

  133. JJP – I would say it hurts them in the draft, but it didn’t hurt Kristo he was taken in the 2nd round in ’08. He’s been playing the whole year for Gernander, he had an injury for about 10 games, but he’s back now. I just think his shot, and playmaking ability could really help Marty & Richie Rich. He certainly isn’t going to slow them down. Richie would be the one that would have to keep up.

Kristo played in every situation in college, PK & PP, 4 on 4, and he is much faster than Richards. So I’m not worried that he would be a liability on defensive side.

  134. _Next season the league won’t run on statistic but rather on my observations of each game. I will look at the matchups daily and select a winner based on who I think played better._

    This should work :)

  135. Richards and Nash should share the Lady Byng because they’re nice about not hitting other players hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

  136. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Random thought: Why would James Dolan give a hoot about winning the cup? The Islanders and Devils have won a bunch and no one goes to their games and their teams are completely broke. It seems like, from a business perspective, winning a cup or two is really a detriment.

  137. If we all agree that they need an upgrade in their size/grit department, they can’t keep everyone, no? Someone has to go. That’s why I think Boyle and Carcillo will have very little leverage in the upcoming negotiations. I think keeping Moore, Pouliot, and MZA is much more important. And at this point I have no doubt they will qualify Brassard.

  138. I’d bet against Pouliot being back if I were a betting gentleman. He’s a 3rd liner and with our salary structure you have to have cheap and young talent on the 3rd line.

  139. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Pouliot now has a very, very solid season to bargain off of. Good enough to be on any NHL team but not good enough to be kept from walking away from any NHL team. He’s got Nashville or Phoenix written all over him.

  140. “Hello, General Manager of a cap floor team? This is Kent Hughes, agent for Benoit Pouliot and I was wondering if you had a few minutes to talk …”

  141. One thing that’s surprised me as the season has gone on is how Pouliot uses his size in front of the net and to play a bit physically. He’s 4th in hits behind Girardi, Kreider, and Boyle.

  142. I’m confident they will sign everyone they want to because playing in NY, for an original 6 is the best, and money doesn’t mean anything. (s)

  143. From NHL.com….

*The Buffalo Sabres could end up with three first-round picks. They could receive the New York Islanders’ selection through the Thomas Vanek trade in October. If New York’s pick finishes in the first 10 selections the Islanders have the option of sending the pick to the Sabres or keeping it, which would mean the Sabres automatically receive the Islanders’ first-round pick in the 2015 draft.*

So The Buffalo Baby Buffaloes could potentially have two top 10 picks, at least, in 2015, maybe even top 5. Wow!

That’s how you rebuild a team. Garth Snow is a tool!

  144. MD, they’ll have no problem with all the *hometown discounts* their FA’s take.

  145. Good point, Gravy. I hope Callahan calls Sather and is like “I’m sorry I didn’t realize what an honor it is to play in NYC and now I realize that while every team thinks players should play for them Rangers fans are the ones who are actually right” and then he agrees to a 4 year deal with $6.5MM total.

  151. Is that a 3rd liner who plays on their first line? :-)

This is the best Pouliot has looked in his career. He had one good season in Boston a few years back. Maybe he is figuring it out, maybe he likes to play for AV and likes his structure. Regardless, he has size, speed, physicality, and skill. He drives to the net more often than others. Unless his contract demands are outrageous, they should try and keep him

  152. Hockey Dad to son: “Be honest, be loyal, be true.”

No way i let pouliot walk. I’m going to get killed for this but pouliot is a far less expensive cally imho. He is NOT as consistent night in night out as cally, but can put up the same type of points as cally, plays physical like cally, speedy and more talented than cally…and bigger.

Moore or boyle needs to go. We need more effective truculence than what we ahve…I know everyone jokes about TRADE EVERYONE, but I think a minimum of 4 guys need to be moved and replaced with a bit more size and truculence that is playable (I’d move six guys, but whatever).

    Just a couple of opinions

  177. bull dog line on

easily replaced thats for sure. Boyle is having a solid season, but guys that play his role are replaceable. remember when Blair Betts, and Freddy Sjoostrom were going to mussed.

  178. If Boyler played like Richie, just hanging around waiting for someone else to break his azz and slide him the puck, he’d probably have 15-20 goals by now.

  179. From Stranger some time earlier today.

This is getting worse than one could have ever thought of. Now we have two top 6 forwards that can’t play with anyone else so AV put Carcillo with them. Carcillo, ok? Yes, that Carcillo. The one who sucks. Actually, the one who looked better than the other two.

Totally agree, working harder than we should to get a couple of superstars going is a huge problem, huge.

  180. Wicky, in November and December I could not have disagreed more about Pouliot but now he is an important piece and I think we should keep him. But I would have paid Cally so what do I know.

  181. The fact that Boyle ranks 5th (and Moore 6th) in D/O start percentage means less than zero because, really, that could be anyone out there and it just so happens to be him (them).

  182. Dominic Moore plays the same role and is a better penalty killer and faceoff winner.

  183. _Dominic Moore plays the same role and is a better penalty killer and faceoff winner._

You know a great hockey player when you see one! Re: Callahan. I tend to agree with PIMP on Poulet; he’s been quite good since the new year, but I don’t see it continuing for very long.

I am bummed about lapierre, but stoked about Pouliot. Several threads ago I suggested him as an inexpensive pick up. He’s a fast skater and will occasionally drop the gloves, decent sized and has skill.

  193. _Moore has more than one role to play. Boyle’s only role is a defensive role. Boyle should be on the first PK unit._

No, he really doesn’t, unless “Carcillo also has a 1st line role to play”. They basically play identical roles w/ Boyle getting the tougher 1st PK minutes. And you probably know that’s true.

  198. I thought for sure Gerbils would score there. Seemed just like the moment they needed to begin their miraculous run to the eighth and final playoff spot.

I don’t think anyone can say who is going and who is going until this season plays out. We sure could use a couple of gritty tough power forwards and a couple of big hitting, crease clearing men but – all that in good time. Let’s go rangers.

Anyone know how the 2nd round opponent is determined in PO’s?? If the season ended today, we play Flyers. What happens if we/they win??

I would not want to play Detroit in the PO’s. Tough to beat them at home and they are still SO talented. Anyone who’s watched Nyquist knows he literally could be top 5 league over the next year or so. Very elite talent. Add in Dasyuk, etc., etc, Yes, no Lidstrom, but they are the real deal.

Devils lost Elias and Henrique tonight. Can anyone spell R-I-P, Devils????

  204. I had a terrible cough, so I finally Weissed up and drove my Datsyuk to the CVS and got some Lindstrom to gargle with and some Nyquist, then read a bit on my Kindl and finally fell asleep.
