Sharks at Rangers … It’s Go Time!

[polldaddy poll=7883659 align="left"]
Game 69.sharks
Sharks at Rangers.

Jumbo Soft Shell Shrimp Joe Thornton and his Sharknado gang have won five in a row and are 44-17-7 for 95 points, second in the West.

Of course you probably remember Tomas (Hollerin’) Hertl dancing for four goals against ya boys in that 9-2 win Oct. 8.

The Rangers, just 16-15-4 (so really 16-19) at the Garden, play their only home game in a stretch of seven. After today, only five home games remain.

They go back on the road for games in Ottawa Tuesday, Columbus Friday (Rich Nash’s first trip back) and Newark Saturday. Then it’s home for two (Phoenix, Philly) followed by a four-game trek through Western Canada and Colorado.

Henrik Lundqvist starts vs. Antti (Em) Niemi. With his next victory, Lundqvist will break Mike Richter’s team record of 301. And with his next shutout, he will break Eddie Giacomin’s record of 49.

Same lineup, which means Derek Dorsett, Justin Falk and Raphael Diaz are prucha’d.

  1. Oh, I forgot Stuart concussed Nash in that game!

They lose 9-2, Nash gets elbowed in the head, and nobody does anything aboot it.

What a nightmare of a game.

Honestly, how does NYR lose this? You have all the bulletin board material in the world to motivate you to show up!

  2. Orr

They lose this cause sharks are faster stronger deeper. Real simple recipe.

It’s go time should be changed to is it elimination time.

Rangers hit ice as 2nd wild card currently. Can we hold off wings caps devils for 8th.

  3. I don’t disagree on any of that, Papa.

But at least they got rid of that young captain who never tried to win or compete.

  4. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Kooz chased norm Von trapp. It’s been down hill since…..

    Rangers 4
    Sharks 0

    GWG Brassard

  5. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

The next ten games are a minefield. Maybe they’ll surprise me against Ottawa and Phoenix.

How many points will they get in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver? Should be six. I’ll say three.

By then, my neighbors will think I have a dog named mother$&%(*” from hearing it screamed so many times.

  6. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

We lack the necessary players with the necessary mindset and size and temperament for playoff success.

I would love to be wrong, but I’m not!

    LGR and LGD!

  7. Knowing rangers prob have to win in Montreal last day of the season house of horrors with 1 win this year in last 5 years just to okay boston.

  8. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

This is the type of game that next year’s captain, Brad Richards, tends to dominate.

    Book it

  9. Maybe sharks after two wins in Columbus and islanders take a game off. Only way we win.

  10. @rangersreport

IMO, the 9-2 loss in San Jose in October wasn’t as bad as the mailed-in loss in Carolina last week.

  11. Stranger Nation on

Step comes down the middle with Nash on his right and THE on his left and fires it in the zone

you have to carry and create!!!!

  12. finally on the board
must admit for those watching on Center Ice
    and have the sharks announcers
    i really like them
    especially Drew Remenda
i believe he played and was assistant coach
he offers a lot of insightful comments

  13. Typical Ranger start at home. Skating well, territorial advantage, NOTHING to show for it.

  14. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Need a staged fight to bring some life into the place…

    Oh that’s right…soft

  15. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

All about points and nothing else matters…lol

Clearly those who think that don’t understand hockey and think it is baseball.

  16. Too many NYR panic in both zones. Brassard has much time and space to get that past Niemi, but for some reason decided to lunge for it and fail.

  17. That’s why they won’t finish in top 3. They don’t finish chances. The puck never goes in easy for them

  18. >>You couldn’t pay me to watch beginnings.

Good! I thought I was the only one who “could care less” about players’ beginnings.

  19. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

You do realize brassard is bigger than step, hags, Richards, dorsett, cally (no longer here I’ve heard) right?

  20. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

As the open ice and overall space disappears due to playoff position fight and actual playoffs, so will smaller and softer players and smaller, softer, less physical teams!

  21. Freaking team is an utter disgrace.

Carp get a freaking clue 2nd place. I like you I really do but your lost on this one

  22. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Yeah. Just keep putting Richards on the point for the power play. It works SO well…

  23. Matty"UnbelievablySoft"Boy on

    Time for our secret weapon:

AV: “Now, Horseteeth, go commit a penalty. Our best offense comes when you’re in the box.”

  24. Matty"UnbelievablySoft"Boy on

Not only is Richards so slow he can’t keep up with Couture, but he’s so uncaring that the thought of him diving on the ice and reaching for the puck is foreign. Perfect guy for the point on our PP.

Just like what Montreal has, right?

  25. Thinking about the Rangers’ present and future potential I’m reminded of the line in the movie THE GRADUATE when one of Dustin Hoffman’s father’s friends says to Hoffman, “Plastics.” For the Boys in Blue management my words of wisdom would be “size.”

  26. Johnnyboy

Last time I looked u need to score to win. Who gives a crap how much time they have the puck

  27. ThisYearsModel on

Henrik used to stop breakaways. That gear must really be a lot smaller this year.

  28. if MZA scored on the pass from MSL, and it’d be 1-1 right now it’d be one of the best periods of the season against one of the best teams in the league.

  29. Can’t Rangers fans put money together for a hostile takeover of the team? That’s probably the only [legal] way we’ll ever get rid of Glen Sather.

  30. Seriously, eric, you know hockey better than that. Zone time is not worthless.

they had no zone time in SJ. And I’m trying to remember how that game turned out.

  31. Since the last game was 9-2, this is nice to see.. sorry my glass isn’t empty like yours

  32. ThisYearsModel on

What possible benefit is that shield on Hagelin’s helmet? Keep pigeon poop out of his eyes?

  33. Stranger Nation on

    MZA shoots into goalie
    Brassard shoots into goalie pads
Richards and Girardi shots are harmless.
    Nash…Nash – is he playing?

  34. Wow – 65 SOG sure will make it look like we played well tomorrow. We might break 100 if we actually put the top chances on net

  35. I’d love for MSG to show the old Jim Mora footage on the big screen- Playoffs? playoffs?

  36. I love these intermission reports where guys come on and try to analyze or correct the Rangers play as if they are a talented top well coached team

  37. Rangers lose tonight watch garden tomorrow send out playoff invoices. I may lose it on my rep tomorrow

  38. Bonilla to wife in Greenwich: “Honey, my check come in yet? Hate to have to show Wilpon the hood.”

  39. Richie to Slats: “Uh, regarding that buy-out, boss, when you put it all in one big lump, what does that amount to?”

  40. Blah, blah, blah – this team is a garbage, blah,blah,blah,- Richards sucks, blah, blah, blah, – fire Sather, blah,blah,blah,- Stralman what a moron, blah, blah, blah, – McD is Monster, blah, blah, blah, – Kreideer is THE! Blah, blah, blah, – all is soft except Johnson,
Worst team in the League. Worst blog on the internets.

  41. ThisYearsModel on

Olympics are over. Rick Nash will clearly be a perimeter prance for the next 4 years.

  42. Players who’d probably be better than Nash: Ash, Bash, Cash, Dash, Fash, Gash, Hash, Lash, Mash, Pash, Rash, Sash, Tash, Wash.

  43. maybe a devils or islanders fan
buried something in the NEW Madison Square Garden!
    to curse the teams
what the red sox fan tried to do at yankees stadium
was smart enough not to boast about it.
    seems to be working

  44. Stranger Nation on

Hate the MZA – Brassard – MSL line; no balance – horrible in D zone. Not sure it is MZA still being hurt and MSL pressing with new team. Broshard rushing plays as well.

Richards requires two fore-checkers/2 way players (Hags & Pullout) screwing up our lines.

  45. Madonna not scoring on open net, so does MDZ, Brass(2). Wonderboy Staal making more mistakes than damned Stral, what’s up?

  46. Yeah, all we just need – Cally back and timeout on the middle of the game. We will be 2nd in division and safe passage to finals.

  47. This reminds me of Briere’s goal no-goal in Game 4 against the Sabres in ’07. Everyone knows it went in, but the video evidence fails at the critical moment to decisively prove so.

  48. sather gets rid of all the heart and soul guys for supposedly scorers and we still can’t score and now the rangers are a bunch of cream puffs. I’ve had it and can’t stomach sather anymore.

  49. LOL! That’s my favorite quote of the night. St. Louis can score 4 goals against SJS as a Lightning, but none as a Ranger!

  50. There was no conclusive proof other than the video of the puck entering the net …

seriously, they should just go back to goal judges and no replay.

  51. Toronto peeps reviewing from the brass rail…something(s) must have been blocking their view.

  52. SHAME! Toronto should be leveled and new Hockey Center be build in South Florida.

  53. As a member of the International Fraternal Order of Goaltenders, that is no goal. As a goalie that has played for 30 years, that was probably in.

It really could have still been on the goal line. 2″ of goal line, plus 3″ of puck diameter means the puck could have still been on the line. Or it could have been just over. No way to tell, Niemmi may not even be sure.

  54. Toronto must have gotten an envelope from Lou Armadillo earlier today. Do they deliver mail in Canada on Saturday?

  55. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    No review, goal judge only.

    Too many game stoppages!!!

    Hybrid icing sux

  56. Stranger Nation on

Al Troutwig – what a tool! Do they provide him questions or does he come up with these beauties all by himself?

What was it like on the bench during the goal review?

  57. Based on the league standings, there are obviously teams worse than us

But we look turrible way too often

  58. ThisYearsModel on

Clearly, conclusive evidence of the puck being fished out of the net by the goalie does not constitute conclusive evidence that the puck actually entered the net in the first place.

  59. Why is it that Sather always gives up two player/draft picks of our players but no team ever gives us two good players for one of ours…

  60. Sam: “Nice play by Richards there, unsuccessfully attempting to control the puck. Nice play there, nice play, nice play. Good attempt, there. Neat little deke there by Richards, avoiding the hit and almost keeping control of the puck.”

  61. Toronto review the goal and must have seen the net tip forward and the pick slid in from the back of the net…that’s the only way the goalie fishes the puck out…

  62. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" LETS GO LETS GOl!!!"...says Greg L. on

Sharks , time to play in OUR building!!!

  63. Slatsko Folkyerself on

“there are obviously teams worse than us”

    That will be Sather’s Legacy.

  64. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" LETS GO LETS GOl!!!"...says Greg L. on

  65. ThisYearsModel on

I understand you completely. The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation.

  66. I bet if that goal was scored against the Rangers, Stepan would have been in perfect position to fish it out.

  67. Yeah, if they can’t say they intended to blow the whistle, hey, it was hidden by the pad and over the goal line. Are we 1 for 6 on these types of call this season? and they seem to lose their bite after the call.

  68. 4generations 4 cups on

these games have been such snoozers. they dont have any fire in their game or want to puck at all. every chance is a pass instead of a shot. derek stepan is absolutely lame on the puck on every chance he gets. hasn’t been nearly the same player he was last season.

its boring as hell to watch a team that would rather just take their paycheck rather than really hustle for it.

  69. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Stepan skates in on his penalty shot ….he dekes annnnnnd passes to empty ice

  70. Is it in Richards’ contract that if he is bought out, the next team he signs with has to put him on the PP point?

  71. Nash invisible again for a lot of the game, but did draw a couple of penalties and then should have gotten one there driving to the net.

  72. I guess Nash as a 7 million dollar penalty drawer is better than…well…Wellman

  73. I guess my view of this team is different than yours, eric, because I really am so detached that I don’t suffer the emotional ups and downs you do. I still think they’re better than Philly and the others, and will be in the end.

  74. and by the way, if Toronto doesn’t screw up that call, you guys are all saying what a great game they played against one of the best teams in the league.

  75. Just flew in from Kuala Lumpur. Paid a visit on a recalcitrant diplomat who lied to us. All I had was a jar of pickles and a Ralph Lauren tie. Mission accomplished.

  76. Pouliot could have used a rebound there

But would have shot wide anyway so who cares

  77. Even if that goal counted yes niemi playing well but it’s not good enough u have find ways to score.

Much like Toronto game bruin game tonite they fire 20 shots on goal control play yet nothing to show for it.

Tonite game was lost in 1st period yet again.

  78. Stranger Nation on

Richards just missed it, really, he really really did. Just missed it. So close, so so close

  79. I’m starting to root for the Blue Jackets…you know the “Rangers” of the Ohio Valley.

  80. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Brassard will score after Hank is pulled with 24 seconds left.

    *i see dead people*

  81. Chicago’s the best team in the league, Slatsko, but man is that going to be a rough road in the West this year.

  82. I miss snipers like Jerry Butler. And John Bednarski. And Dan Newman. And Dean Talafous. And Mark Heaslip. And…..

  83. ThisYearsModel on

The Rangers have played a pretty good game. Of all of them, McD has been terrific. He is the best skater we have by far.

  84. Can’t believe this isn’t a rookie in his first appearance in net for the Saint Joseph Carcharodon carcharias

  85. You mean to tell me J.T. Miller couldn’t play better than those Big Name stiffs in the lineup?

  86. yeah Carp
    that’s what worries me
is that the best from the west
will beat the heck out of each other
    possibly be weak
for a possible match with pens

hopefully pitt will be long gone and i won’t have to worry about that.
    no way in hades
i have to worry about this team doing much in the playoffs
unless they find the “On” switch soon

  87. We here enough of “we played a pretty good game” during the post game player comments.

Who cares? What does it mean?

  88. ThisYearsModel on

And they cannot even shoot the puck in deep. They are going out with a whimper. Too bad.

  89. 4generations 4 cups on

i wish this team were capable of actually caring about the game, minus hagelin and McD

  90. 4generations 4 cups on

we should trade more picks away to win now. cause we’re on fireeeee lol

  91. ThisYearsModel on

Hopefully, we can trade the rest of our high draft picks away before the draft. Then none of us will be tempted to pay any attention to it. Getting Martin St. Louis has been a huge boost…….er……bust.

  92. Joe M

“if only the Rangers could have gotten their 2nd shots over Niemi”.

    Really now.

  93. Best case scenario 2nd wild card/8th place lose Ito Boston in 5 or miss playoffs. Everyone with 2-3 games in hand flyers jackets wings.

  94. Sather really killed this team now and in the future and the sad part is this old piece of carcillo will still be the GM.

  95. ThisYearsModel on

2 dependable leaders came through for us tonight. Brad Richards and his exemplary leadership on the power play leading to a shortie, and the War Room in TO.

  96. Richie! Do not allow that man to score. I don’t care how many penalties you take.

  97. Wonder how Slats would define mediocrity if there were no salary cap and he had spent #125 mil of Dolan’s money fighting for a wild card.

  98. :) Richie: “Cally was too young. His youth is still kind of a residual around here, but once he’s totally forgotten, we can turn this around.”

  99. Anyone who has been watching a fair amount of Flyers, Jackets, and Rangers games over the past 30 days can clearly see who the worst team of the three is. Hope that changes, but that’s where it is right now.

  100. Philly, before its home and home against Wilkes Barre (AHL) this weekend, was 3-3 in its last six, including a loss to the Devils and a 7-3 loss to the Sharks.

  101. The rangers couldn’t beat a cardboard cutout goalie

The best they could hope for is a shot to the belly goes right thru

Goal would be called off by bob and Doug Mackenzie in Toronto anyway

  102. Blue Jackets are 3-2 in their last five, with losses to the Sharks and the Blackhawks.

But the Rangers can’t compete with the Flyers and Blue Jackets for the next 13-14 games, right?

  103. The New York Rangers: Where goal scores go to die (while collecting big paychecks). Hockey’s different here

  104. and, yes, I know there were circumstances and that the guy is hurt a lot, but the one goal scorer who came here and didn’t retire his shot was run out of town after scoring 40 twice in three seasons. For a third-line center, a third-pair D and a regular scratch.

  105. AV: “Some of my friends, I didn’t say it, but some of them say that Toronto makes it up as they go along.”

  106. and despite that, and how much “better” Columbus and Philly are, they are all separated by one point. Miracle!

  107. ThisYearsModel on

I agree Carp—–When I heard that Gaborik was traded to Columbus, I listened waiting to hear the names Johansen, Johnson, etc. When I heard the real names, I was shocked. Sather has hamstrung the team going forward. The good news: Marty St. Louis is happy to be playing closer to home.

  108. Why was Torts so confrontational with Gabby while he let Richie off with accolades? (Until, too late, he finally sat him, then got himself tossed?) Dolan and/or Slats MUST be protecting him to this day.

  109. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Same with Verbeek. He got 40 some goals one season for NY. What happened with him?

  110. Repost from previous thread:

    Papa Bear
Carp, it’s me. Sorry to say I’ve soured on this year’s rendition. Don’t like this team much at all right now.

    March 16th, 2014 at 3:25 PM

    Papa Bear
In genera, I don’t like their effort, compete level, the way they get pushed around and don’t respond.

Specifically, I can’t stomach -Nash- and Richards anymore.

  111. Nash: “Wanna grab a rib eye?”
Richie: “Would, but I got a tanning appointment.”

  112. Slatsko Folkyerself on

St. Louis: I’m a big fan of ribeye.
    Nash: You’re not a big anything…
