Rangers-Hurricanes in review

Thoughts:

1) Holy shishkebob. I’ve been watching NHL games for a long time, and I’ve watched a lot of bad games by bad teams and good teams and I’ve learned this: A classic indication of a team taking a team lightly, of showing an opponent zero respect, is playing Harlem Globetrotters hockey …  When you try passes you would never try against a Boston or Pittsburgh or Chicago …  fancy, no-chance passes instead of just shooting the puck and trying to create something ugly. Might as well attempt a couple of behind-the-back,  between-the-legs passes.

2) Not that the bad, wish passes they repeated from start to finish were the only lousy part of the Rangers’ game on this night, because they were bad in all areas, and almost all of those from a complete lack of try. Just gliding, no-forecheck, mindless forays to the ice and back to the bench (or penalty box). To use another metaphor. If this was a football game, the Rangers would have had a lot of clean jerseys. Disgraceful.New York Rangers v Carolina Hurricanes

3) Especially so for the supposed top guys. My God. You guys know I’m usually more a see-than-stats guy. I saw awful. But some impressive stats: Brad Richards: 1 shot, 0 hits, 3-9 on faceoffs. Rick Nash: 1 shot, 0 hits. Derek Stepan: 0 shots, 1 hit, 8-11 on faceoffs. Carl Hagelin: 1 shot, 0 hits. Derek Brassard: 2 shots, 0 hits, 4 giveaways.

4) Worse, did you see the way those guys jogged on the back-check on some of the goals. Holy crap. That one goal where Nash, Stepan and Chris Kreider floated back, Marc Staal went for the no-chance pinch and Anton Stralman went for the hit that only created a 2-on-none … I was having flashbacks to the Ron Low-John Muckler-Bryan Trottier eras.

5) Geez, the top six forwards really mailed it in. By the middle of the the third, it had spread through the third line that is, in reality, the first line, too. Lazy garbage.

6) Staal and Stralman were both minus-3, and in this case, plus/minus was indeed a telling, accurate and defensive stat.New York Rangers v Carolina Hurricanes

7) After a fits-and-starts start, starting with Stralman’s lazy penalty at 0:16, the Rangers had what Alain Vigneault might call some “Grade A” chances, a few of those by Martin (no goals, four games) St. Louis. Not many of them actually ended up in shots on goal, though.

8) Here’s another great stat: Derek Dorsett, back in the lineup, had six hits. The other 17 skaters, all of them, had a total of 15. Fifteen! … and Stralman had four of those. So the other 16 skaters had 11 hits. Eleven!

9) The 1-0 goal … That’s the kind of goal the Rangers allowed late vs. Chicago, then the next three games (all losses) vs. Philly, Boston and Toronto. With the supposed first line on the ice. Then the 2-1 goal, with the first goal on the ice again, ugh. Really all five of them were very guilty on both. Well deserved double minuses for all. Just awful. My buddy Andrew Gross appropriately called the second goal a “FUBAR.”

10) This was one of those rare games when one of the teams was worse than the refs.New York Rangers v Carolina Hurricanes

11) The one Rangers goal was yet another goal for the first line that shouldn’t be the first line. Good plays by John Moore — who had another terrific game — and Benoit Pouliot, before the pass from Mats Zuccarello to Kevin Klein. Zuccarello had an up-and-down game with a lazy penalty to boot. Their center, Brassard … never mind, we already covered that.

12) The fourth line, with Dorsett, Dominic Moore and Brian Boyle,  put togeteher three good forecheck shifts to pin and wear down Carolina after the 1-1 goal. Lot of good it did them. Later, Dorsett replaced Hagelin. But … nobody else was interested in joining the third and fourth lines in getting dirty, or doing much defensive-zone work.

13) The Daily Nash-O-Meter. Don’t even ask.

14) Did MSG Network really choose to read, on the air, a tweet from a fan who claimed the game could have gone either way and was a matter of puck luck? Really?

15) I say this sometimes, but not enough. Rangers really do wonderful work with Garden of Dreams. Just a great endeavor that is a major commitment by the entire organization.

16) The guys who, ahem, participated in the game should donate their paychecks to the charity.

  1. Does the team buy Hank wine after a game like this? He sure could use 18 bottles of it right now. Rumor is he slept last night like a baby…got up every hour and cried!

  2. Good point, Tomb.

I guess MSG did me a favor by not showing the game up here. From the posts last night and this review, I probably won’t be watching it on the dvr either.

Sounds like they could have used some intangibles.

  3. Looking for good news……this just might be the game that gets Richards bought out. Wishful thinking? No chemistry with MSL. Maybe just maybe. I’m trying to resist definitely 3rd in the East comment.

  4. Who knew Carcillo wad such an impact player……JK. Thanks Carp, unfortunately another all too accurate write up. Just a day ago filled with optimism and then this, hard game to watch, wife kept telling me to stop yelling at the phone. Maybe Stall was showing how well he works with his brothers. At least he didn’t get concussed again. Wild game next, what will AV do to light a fire?

  5. Well written, CARP.

It was the ultimate bush-league display.

    Complete amateur-hour nonsense.

    Dog’s-breakfast-of-a-performance, really.

I would have put these no-talents on a bus to Minny. Seriously.

  6. Couldn’t have put it any better Carp! The pace was so slow that I forced myself to stay awake. Thank goodness I fell asleep in the third.

  7. Thanks for another incisive review, Carp…no question, whether exhaustion or lack of motivation, effort was appalling. Maybe trying to imitate the Canucks? Arghhhh….arffff…your Dog’s Breakfast prediction came true last night, Miami.

  8. Exactly what I saw Carp. I can’t remember a more frustrating game with this group. Horrible. Even McD, who usually shows up for every game was not that great last night. The worst thing is, they did all the right things when they beat them less than a week ago, 40+ shots and all, and they decide to play pass happy again? And now they have three tough games in a row. You can’t give away games like this. You just can’t. Play like this and I’m going to have to stop defending them.

  9. Good morning, boneheads!

Between Carp and Miami, it’s all covered.
Ugh, what a horror show that was. Or no show, to be precise.
I counted 5 and a half players who came out to play last night- the fourth line, Hank, Klein, and MZA at times.
    Move on!

  10. Matty"DissapointedInCallahan"Boy on

Thank you, Carp. Your reviews are sometimes more the addiction than the game itself. Long may you do what you do!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Matty"DissapointedInCallahan"Boy on

This was worse than the game they lost to Philly after Olympics prior to knowing they would lose the next to Boston. Two in a row lost then, the former, an opponent they could have beaten.

Much the same, but worse, a 10% effort and you win this game. But now, 2 points lost AND, they have 3 tough games this weekend.

This was one they could look back at with great regret………….

  12. Matty"DissapointedInCallahan"Boy on

Seriously, you just have to chalk this up to a long schedule, Olympic break, over confidence, poor leadership, a day off granted by the coach, and somehow, some way, the effort is pathetic. Ya gotta believe this is a quick rock bottom and they rebound from here.

  13. Matty"DissapointedInCallahan"Boy on

AV’s timeout was timely, wasn’t it?

    Flush, flush away……….!!!!!

  14. Hagerstown Md. Rangers fan on

Bad game all around. Very ugly. Just wondering, has Martin St. Louis reported to the Rangers yet?

  15. This just in: it is 9:00am and the Rangers have just attempted another lazy cross-ice pass. That was two and a half hours of my life that i will never get back.

  16. jimG the desertrat on

It was a game you kept waiting for something that would jumpstart themselves. They proved their not good enough to just show up. Marty gets pushed off the puck a lot easier than zucc.

  17. Maybe we should *pass* on caring about this team the way they *pass* on taking shots.

  18. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Today’s *METAL* selection comes from Swedish Heavy Metal band *Grand Magus*. While many would argue that this is merely Classic Rock turned up a notch and specifically *not* metal, I think the lyrical themes along with the battle cries lend this to being *Metal* Just a bit more classic Heavy Metal.

This was selected because the *Rangers* desperately need some *Heavy Metal* to wake them up and call them to battle so they actually win one of these things.

You can stream their new album _Triumph and Power_ here: http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/grand-magus-exclusive-triumph-and-power-in-full/

  19. THE Kreider – cost the team the LOSING goal :(

Didn’t you catch the replay showing his error not skating back to the blue line, instead he went to the front of the net. Easy 2-1 turned to 2 on ZERO, slam dunk goal. Sorry Pimp, part of that was on your boy.

  20. How dare you blame THE Kreider!

If you look back on the play, it’s clear that Richards’ ugly mug caused THE to lose focus.

    Blame THE Horse.

  21. Here’s something I can say definitively: Because you cannot _prove_ a connection between Callahan’s leadership and the team’s performance and effort levels, there must therefore be *zero* connection between Callahan’s leadership and the team’s performance and effort levels. It is mere coincidence a unanimously declared “worst game of this season, maybe multiple seasons” happened a week after he was traded.

  22. Let’s hope the Horse gets bought out today!

Every time he got on the ice last night was a heart attack.

  23. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I had an amazing burger at Minetta Tavern, took the day off work to hang with my wife, shared a bottle of Lenz Vineyards 1999 Cuvèe and had a nice night of sleep!

Also, I love calling Mister D a/k/a The Doctor “Doc”. That’s gonna stick.

  25. Jeff in South Dakota on

Spot on analysis Carp. By the middle of the second period, I was flipping back and forth between the game and Futurama reruns; have not done that this year — not even during the first nine games.

  26. Didn’t get to see a minute of the game last night. Celebrated Mom’s birthday with a nice family dinner. I obviously wasn’t too crazy about Mom scheduling her birthday on game night, but based on the scathing review I guess that all worked out pretty well.

Oh jeez, there I go again bragging about going out to dinner when so many families struggle to put food on the table. I really need to be more *sensitive*. Sorry blog.

At least dinner wasn’t in the Caribbean, right?

  27. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Your mom is so insensitive. But please remember that not all of us get to have birthdays each year. Some of us don’t even know on which day we were birthed.

  28. I’ve had enough of the Garden of Dreams. First off, according to their latest tax filing, they paid out $1.2m in grants on $2.5m in contributions. That’s an abysmal ratio for a charity.

Second, I’m somewhat offended that they are constantly asking for additional dollars from fans to fund their charity efforts. Now MSG wants me to pay for their charity work too, so they can take credit in the community? It galls me that in this age of escalating ticket prices and player salaries the fans are being asked to fund a charity as well. Let’s be realistic, MSG could just cut a $2.5m check.

Nice idea, it’s fun to see the players but poor execution and minimal community impact.

  29. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Doesn’t the other, remaining money, go towards putting on those events for kids?

  30. I would rather an cute orphan toddler with a cap hit of less than $1.5MM than Richards and/or Nash on far too many nights.

  31. After having to work occasionally at 2nd job and getting home at midnight and thus having to be up by 5 today I wish I could get back the hour from 12-1am I decided to watch this game on Dvr.

All I could say is this was an utter disgrace and like carp tweet said this will be the 2 pts they look back in in end one way or another.

Seriously might have well stayed home that get on a plane and give us fans that performance. Completely unacceptable at this time if year.

This franchise will never see a cup again in my lifetime and I am 35. Mark my words.

  32. JJP – just because all the money didn’t go out in one year, doesn’t mean it didn’t go into the endowment for the fund.

I worked with Cullen Children Fund. They would donate about 1/2 of the money each year, and let the rest build up for a few years. Then they wrote a $1,000,000 check to the hospital, specifically for the children’s wing.

Granted his charity is on a much smaller scale than the Garden of Dreams, but still it will give you an idea of some of the work behind the scenes.

    If that helps.

  33. Now I sort of want to see the books, see if there’s garbage-y stuff like renting space at MSG or whatever.

  34. Manny – So the Garden of Dreams collected $2.5m in 2011, paid out $1.2m in grants, have other expenses of $1.1m and keep $200k.

In the $1.1m of expenses is a fee of $600k that is paid back to MSG for facilities/services/promotion, $270k for something called direct program services, only $150k is marked for events and the remainder is overhead.

25% of the money collected is going back to MSG.

  35. The Garden is about to pay the *Zen* Master 15-16 million to be a figurhead. Money’s gotta come from somewhere.

My cable bill and the children will *suffer*.

  36. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Brassard is still top 5 in the league. Everyone has a bad day once in a while.

  37. So I don’t sound totally heartless, I will say that I’m sure a fair number of MSG employees donate their time for free to run the charity and events. That is commendable and difficult to put a price on.

I’m just not keen on being asked to contribute to captive charity more than once a year from a business that already asks me for more money every single year.

Thought the JD & The Straight Shots royalties would be enough to hold him over…

  39. _So I don’t sound totally heartless, I will say that I’m sure a fair number of MSG employees donate their time for free to run the charity and events. That is commendable and difficult to put a price on._

No doubt, the people *donating* time are usually doing it from the right place. But MSG charging for space and promotion of a charity event? C’mon. That’s gross.

  40. It figures that Live Nation and Cablevision CEO’s top the list, Stranger. Two of the most evil companies around.

  41. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Remember when Wyclef ran for president of Haiti and it was revealed that his charity was kind of a masquerade for him to put on concerts and get paid very lucratively for them?

I still think he did a lot of good for Haiti and donated a lot of money. It’s just a known fact that no one in a business position will do ANYTHING if it’s not going to make them money somehow.

Always be suspicious of charity from big business.

It’s about time. This might actually have more effect than all the times Torts did this. When your coach who almost never calls out your team in the press does so, you REALLY have to look at yourself. Could Cally have made a difference? Doubtful. Messier might have, but Cally was never a fire and brimstone type of leader. What was most disturbing is we’ve seen the Rangers play a period or two like this before, but when the 3rd comes around, they turn it up a notch. They were actually WORSE in the 3rd period than the others. I kind of made me think maybe there’s a flu bug going around. I don’t know, something just didn’t seem right. Hank REALLY looked frustrated with the team, and Hank NEVER does that. Glad to see that too.

  44. Good research jjp – 600,000 for rent? or tv spots for advertising?

You would think the Billionaire could donate some of that space & time for a good cause.

So the $100 I sent in last night $25 pays for the commercial? Well at least I didn’t get Dugay on the other end.

  45. Nash, Richards and St. Louis for Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Prust, 3 1st round picks and like $10MM in cap space

    Problems solved.

  46. I was surprised to see that Anisimov has 19 goals. I always liked him and thought he could be a decent #2 center for someone. And he was not afraid to go to the net.

  47. _I was surprised to see that Anisimov has 19 goals. I always liked him and thought he could be a decent #2 center for someone. And he was not afraid to go to the net._

Before I whined about Brassard’s linemates, I whined that Anisimov always skated with checkers. Never used right here for more than a game or two at a time.

that is soooo 3 years ago

  49. Carp, I was telling Manny I’d love to see Anisimov as a wing w/ Brassard and then a front of the net guy. Could be a lot of fun or a defensive nightmare.

  50. I honestly didn’t see the first 2 periods, but the boards exploding that this is the worst ever or this yr….. How’s about that early road trip where literally, yea literally we didn’t know what the heck they doing in any zone and Hank spacing out….short memories. Long time fan, long memory of so many lazy, fat cat, no grit, vomit in my mouth, no heart losses it makes wonder do I have any common sense left. I really believe my final straw will be if Richards isn’t bought out. 35yrs old passionate rooting is ready to go out the window.

  51. JJP- sometimes tax return doesn’t tell the whole story. You need to ask for a specific breakdown of that $600K. While it sounds a lot, the facilities need to be maintained. Most of the work is done by employees for free. Their actual program expenses as reported by charity watch dogs is 88%, which is pretty good. The actual overhead is minimal.

  52. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Staal-he’s just too injury prone IMHO for whatever his next contract is going to be (see Callahan, Ryan)

Boyle- I like him, I think he has played pretty well all season. He is effective in his role. I think d Moops has just been a little better. It’s a numbers game.

NATW-the guy got cut from the devils (due to their Norris like depth) and turns down a 3 yr 9 mil deal when he has been on as many teams as Pouliot (ok, 1 less but you get the idea). I’d rather see a bigger guy in that spot that makes between 2 & 3 mil per season.

Hagar-I like the guy, love his wheels, no fit for him. He’s not a top six and need some more bite in the line up (his one suspension and hagoonelin moniker do not give him enough “bite” cred IMHO. He has trade value!

Secretariat-do I really have to say anything?? Cap killer!!

Stephanie-ok, so he’s not a 1C. He should be better than a 3C (which is how he is playing). He is soft on a team that is way too soft, I actually think he is making his linemates worse, lacks skating speed for the new system with the new coach. Classic example of a player that excels in certain systems (see torts, John) but does not excel in others (see V, A). Still has trade value around the league…will be grossly overpaid on next contract compared to his value in current coach’s system.

  53. _Anisimov, IMO, wasn’t a bad defensive player at all._

He was a very capable defensive player, but when he made a mistake, he really made it.

  54. _35yrs old passionate rooting is ready to go out the window._

    Overreaction. Just stop watching instead.

From the daily news (sorry carp)

Dorsett didn’t start the night impressively on Tuesday either, but a lot is being made by fans of Dorsett’s dressing being a major reason for this defeat. Let me make this clear: Almost the entire team played terribly, Boyle and Dom Moore also did nothing … AND, at the end of the game, who was promoted to a higher line? Dorsett. And he applied better offensive pressure playing with Kreider and Richards toward the end.

Like I said, sit Hagar and put dorsett on the 3rd line. He has more skill than he is given credit for.

  56. “He was a very capable defensive player, but when he made a mistake, he really made it.”

We talking about Anisimov or Girardi?

  57. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I really have no idea what we would replace Staal with right now if we were to lose him. The time to trade him would have been this season when he had a full season left under a reasonable contract. Going to be very difficult to get any return next year.

  58. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

What we should do is lock up Hagelin for a long amount of time at a reasonable contract and *then* trade him. Or just keep him because he’s incredibly fast and looking pretty lethal on the PK

  59. Could Staal’s problems last not be a result of him not wanting to hit his brother? Considering what Eric did to him once, maybe that’s on his mind here?

  60. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

He must have also told the team to really leave Jordan Staal open whenever he’s around the cage.

  61. What do you pay a guy like Hags though? We’ve given him enough time to develop I think, and we know what he really is. He’s a guy with a lot of speed, but hands of stone. He’s a decent PK but terrible on the PP (I wasn’t the one who originally said that :) ) I don’t think he’s ever going to be more than what he is. But, he’s the kind of guy that fits AV’s system. It’s a tough call.

Carp, I think the 4th line wasn’t the worst line out there last night. I thought they played ok, and they actually were the line that started the one small stretch in the 2nd period where they had sustained pressure for a few shifts. I like Dorsett but the way this team is configured, there really isn’t room for both Dorsett and Carcillo.

  62. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Hagelin will probably get paid like a “good” 3rd liner and fetch anywhere from $2.8M – $3.2M

    That’s a guess. Anyone?

This will be the moment I simultaneously barf AND cancel my season tickets.

  64. Lets face the truth. This franchise will never win any cups as long as that Piece of carcillo owns the team and sather is running it, book it. I got to enjoy a 4 year window when they were going in the right direction in drafting and developing and than Sather went back to his old bag of tricks. It’s over folks.
