Official announcement of the Callahan-St. Louis trade (UPDATED)

From the Rangers:

Send Ryan Callahan and two draft choices to Tampa Bay

NEW YORK, March 5, 2014 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired Martin St. Louis from Tampa Bay in exchange for Ryan Callahan, a second round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and a first round pick in 2015.

St. Louis is a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner as the league’s leading scorer (2003-04, 2012-13), and a former Lester B. Pearson Award and Hart Memorial Trophy winner as the NHL’s most valuable player as selected by the players and league, respectively, in 2003-04. The three-time Lady Byng Memorial Trophy recipient as the league’s most gentlemanly player (2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13), was also a member of the 2004 Stanley Cup championship winning Tampa Bay Lightning.

St. Louis has registered 29 goals and 32 assists for 61 points, along with six penalty minutes and a plus-12 rating in 62 games this season. He is tied for fifth in the league in goals and eighth in points. He is also tied for eighth in the NHL with nine power play goals, and ranks third among league forwards with 21:41 average ice time. St. Louis has registered 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) over his last 20 games, including a 10-game point streak from January 7 at Winnipeg to January 25 against Colorado. He posted his eighth career hat trick with a career-high, four goals, on January 18 against San Jose, and skated in his 1,000th career NHL game on November 19 at Los Angeles. On January 30 at Ottawa, St. Louis became the eighth active NHL player to register his 600th career assist.

Last season, St. Louis captured his second career Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading point scorer with 60 points in the lockout-shortened season. He became the oldest player in NHL history at 37 years old to win the Art Ross Trophy, and joined Mario Lemeux and Gordie Howe as the only three players to post a 1.25 points per game or better average at 37 years of age or older. His 1.25 points per game put him on pace for 103 points over a full 82-game season. St. Louis also led the league with 43 assists, ranked fifth with 17 power play assists, and ninth with 20 power play points. He registered his 900th career NHL point with a two-assist performance on April 9 against Ottawa.

The six-time NHL All-Star (2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) has skated in 1,041 career regular season games over 15 seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames, registering 369 goals and 604 assists for 973 points, along with 286 penalty minutes and a plus-24 rating. St. Louis currently ranks eighth among active NHL skaters in career assists and points, and 13th in career goals. He has reached the 30-goal and 50-assist marks six times, and has surpassed the 90-point plateau on four occasions. In 2006-07, St. Louis established career-highs with 43 goals and 102 points in 82 games.

The 5-8, 183-pounder was selected as an NHL First Team All-Star following the 2003-04 season, after capturing his first Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer with 94 points. He captured the Lester B. Pearson Award as the league’s MVP, as chosen by the players, and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s MVP that season. St. Louis has also been selected as an NHL Second Team All-Star on four occasions (2006-07, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13).

In post-season competition, St. Louis has registered 33 goals and 35 assists for 68 points, along with 28 penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating in 63 career playoff games with Tampa Bay. He tallied 20 points, including a career-high, 10 goals, in 18 games during the 2011 playoffs. His 10 goals ranked third in the NHL that post-season, while his 20 points tied for third in the league. St. Louis established playoff career-highs with 15 assists and 24 points in 23 games, en route to winning the 2004 Stanley Cup championship. He led the league in playoff assists and ranked second in points that post-season.

Internationally, St. Louis is a two-time Olympian (2006, 2014) and a gold medal winner as a member of Team Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. He has registered two goals and one assist in 11 career Olympic contests. St. Louis is also a two-time silver medalist with Canada at the IIHF World Championships (2008, 2009). He was named to the tournament All-Star team after leading all skaters in scoring with 15 points at the 2009 World Championship. In addition, St. Louis captured a gold medal with Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, tallying two goals and two assists in six tournament games.

The Laval, Quebec native was originally signed by Calgary as an undrafted free agent on February 19, 1998. He made his NHL debut on October 9, 1998 against San Jose, and registered his first career point with a goal on October 20, 1998 at Dallas.

Callahan, 28, has registered 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points, along with 16 penalty minutes in 45 games this season. The Rochester, New York native was originally selected by the Rangers as a fourth round choice, 127th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Statement from Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman:

“The Lightning are very excited to have Ryan Callahan join the organization and help us in our quest to make the playoffs,” Yzerman said. “Ryan is an outstanding player and leader who we look forward to seeing on the ice tomorrow night.”

“We’d like to thank Marty for everything he has done on and off the ice during his outstanding 13-year career in Tampa Bay. He has been one of the greatest players in the organization’s history but in the end we honored his request today. We wish him and his family the best of luck as he continues his career in New York.”

  1. Whoever said that there shouldn’t be a ‘C’ the rest of this year, but rather three ‘A’s) is probably correct, or should be. We need a couple more large players and less controversy.

  2. MSL qualifies as a finisher in my book… that being a principal shortcoming from the last couple of games

  3. Said it before. I think Staal gets the C (eventually), Girardi an A. After Richards buyout, the other A goes to McDonagh, St. Louis or Nash. I give it to McDonagh.

  4. TheMessiah11 on

What’s the feeling here? Are the rangers done, or do we believe there are more moves to come today?

  5. Stranger Nation on

Absolutely most dangerous part of this is the potential connotation that Richards does not get bought out. So not only do we lose Cally but gain Richards for another 5 years

    Holy Rat Turds!

  6. “If TB signs Callahan, why are we penalized with another first?”

We’re not, we get a 2nd in 2005, so essentially it would be just Callahan and a 1st rounder for St. Louis (assuming of course the Rangers don’t find a way to get past Pittsburgh)

  7. Don’t believe rangers are done. Expect another forward. However how we going to get him here in time

  8. Nothing to justify it but I’m guessing one more… hey Sioux – still sending a smoky treat ur way – this is a celebration!

  9. TheMessiah11 on

I would love for them to get Gabby back. I think he can thrive under Alain’s system.

  10. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Don’t like the draft picks surrendered, but we got a great player, payroll flexibility, and won’t have to watch a 36 year old, cap sucking shot blocker.

    Drury anyone?

  12. Richie’s wallet goes down to 8.5 mil next year. His agents will demand a trade or a bonus. :)

  13. Carp

Any chance Callahan goes to TB, misses the Rangers so much that he is willing to resign here, reclaim his C and signs a reasonable contract?

  14. Stranger Nation on

FWIW – MStL is probably the best bang for buck in the league given his offensive production

Now Dolan gets another big name to sell more jerseys and place on the marquee.

  15. bull dog line on

did you really say you would have rather traded Miller than the picks? Holy Spit!

  16. The more I think about this trade I think it’s obvious that Sather is “going for it”. Realistically, when do we think Lundqvist’s window of prime play closes, 2018-2019?

Sure they give up a 1st round pick but what is that worth to the organization? The Ranger’s will probably finish in the top half of the league every year or conversely, be at the tail end of the 1st round draft. Looking at past drafts back to 2009 (five years) – there’s a lot of guys in the bottom half of the 1st round who still haven’t made the NHL or aren’t crushing it.

Even if they drafted someone decent in 2015, that guy is probably not an impact player until 18-19 at the earliest at which point this team’s window is most likely closed anyway.

  17. Cally is smart. Much better weather in Tamper compared to Rochacuse.
Perfecting timimh too..heading down for Yanks spring training.

Eddie x 3 – set me up for an appointment with Callahan please.

  18. Sather Must Go! on

the rangers (sather) just do not value draft picks like other teams, which is silly with a salary cap dictating a lot of personnel decisions; a one for nash, a 2 and 3 for Clowe, a 1 and 2 for st Louis..poor ken gernander

  19. It’s the 2015 1st rounder in my mind is what we should contemplate. 6 for 37-38 too much by years 4-6

  20. Rob in Beantown on

St. Louis for Callahan doesn’t bother me either, ORR. And the 2nd rounder doesn’t really bother me either for that matter. The 1st in 2015 seems excessive though.

I’m really excited to see St. Louis in the roster tonight! Tonight’s game should be interesting.

  21. Unless Cally was involved day to day in these negotiations, he should fire his agent. Not worth breaking up his family for 5 months and facing yet again an uncertain future who knows where when you’re already independently wealthy.

  22. a lot of people not thrilled about giving away picks but it’s a crap shoot anyway…look at Edmonton – a dozen first rounders over the last ten years and they still suck?

  23. One thing is for sure, this is definitely an historic day in Ranger history,

Personally while I don’t like Sather I think this whole thing was a gianty CF by Cally’s agent. Way overvalued him based on what some second rate organization in complete disarray (see Lafontaine, Pat) would pay, then got into a staring match. I guarantee you Callahan wanted to stay here in NY and his agent told him to hold on, hold on, wait, we have all the leverage. Sather got PO’ed. Plus if you are Callahan you could have just signed for $36 million in a situation you knew you liked. Instead, you gave up being captain of the NY Rangers and have to pray you dont get injured in the next 20 games.

I recognize Sather should have dealt with this earlier and much differently to begin with, but Callahan’s agent just blew this. 6 years, 36 million for him is absolutely very fair. No way in hell this is what Callahan wanted to happen or expected. No way.

  24. Doodie Machetto on

That’s all I have to say.

  25. Doodie Machetto on

I bet Sather doesn’t buy out Richards. That’s how terrible of a GM he is.

  26. Dave Andreychuk on

Is Torts still coachin? Vinny coming too? Someone told me we’re getting the gang back together for the 10 year anniversary!

  27. According to Micheletti, St. Louis has a wonderful family. And did you know they live in Connecticut and love NY?

  28. Hey, if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. No way you would normally get MSL out of Tampa.

  29. @LavoieRenaud Kings-Red Wings and Wild are trying to get Ryan Kesler. #tvasports

  30. We are not making conf finals. So won’t be a 1st rounder.

Mcdonagh my dark horse for C

  31. Rob in Beantown on

No buyout for Richards; Sather is trying to reunite the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning on Broadway. WHat’s the coach of that team doing these days?

  32. Seriously, Doodie. I’m sure its temporary, but not only do I hate the trade, I’m completely disengaged right now. I just care less about this team sans-Callahan.

  33. I say we flip Stepan now and ask Kesler what he thinks of St. Louis trade and entice him to waive it to come. All in.

We need a bonafide number one center

  34. Sign Staal sooner than later. Similar, but a little less than what Gerardo got. Make him your new captain.

  35. Mr. Marty St . Louis on

Anyone thinks this trade stinks, should go read the Tampa They are going to burn the rink down and deport Yezerman

  36. T Seppa will have to postpone his reply until he speaks to his barber to find out what went wrong.

  37. Doodie Machetto on

“We need a bonafide number one center”

So why would we trade for Kesler, the king of #2 centers?

  38. I’m miserable, Wicky. I’m very bad at rooting for the laundry, my investment level is very tied to the players in it. Moving Callahan is just brutal. Take the guys I liked best from the 2011-12 team that I loved and they’re almost all gone. I might want a lunch beer.

  39. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

lol…do you think the rangers make any other deals?

  40. Wick, yes I very much do think they’re trying to do some other things … But no idea what’s going on behind the curtain.

  41. ThisYearsModel on

I wonder how Callahan feels. If he is truly sad to be leaving. I wonder if it is a shock to him now that he is finally gone. This stuff does involve actual people’s lives.

  42. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

    Mr. D
I agree re liking players…the way my luck goes with players I like, dorsett, brass, and pouliot will get traded today for heatly

  43. _Anyone thinks this trade stinks, should go read the Tampa They are going to burn the rink down and deport Yezerman_

Oh, I don’t doubt that part either. The rare trade where you can strong factions of misery on both sides.

  44. Never mind the money, the picks, St. Louis, the return.

I just can’t believe he traded him. Can’t believe it.

The fan that I am, the one that obviously does not intellectualize any of this or I would never root for this team for another second, just feels awful. Like we just got eliminated. And unfortunately here it is, reminding me that this is what it feels like to be a Ranger fan.

I’m sure MSL will be terrific but this definitely hurts.

  45. bull dog line on

your anger is misdirected. it should be at Callahan, not the Rangers. he wanted to leave. he wants to go to Buffalo. he left the Rangers no choice. he had to go.

  46. Fun Facts

Martin St. Louis is 8th in the NHL in points with 61
Ryan Callahan is tied for 215th with 25

Also, MSL’s 61 points at age 38 is 7 points higher than Callahan’s career high of 54, whose next best point totals are 48 and 40.

  47. It was either this or cally for another 6 with a 6 mill cap. That money could be used much better, and we have a top scorer for the next two years. Hopefully more. We lost a pick. I’d rather lose a 1st round pick than have cally’s contact gimp the Rangers.

  48. _First MSL hat trick and you’ll be back on board_

Oh, I’m sure I’ll watch tonight and all that, but there are certain guys you want to win with. Like it sucked to move Gartner before ’94, but not as much as moving Graves would have. And we were a ton closer in ’94. And if I weren’t really young in ’94 I absolutely would have been flipping out non-stop during all those trades.

  49. I say goodbye to romance, yeah
Goodbye to friends, I tell you
    Goodbye to all the past
    I guess that we’ll meet,
    We’ll meet in the end

  50. there’s no denying that Callahan will never be anywhere near the offensive player St. Louis is

but the trade wasn’t just Callahan for St. Louis

  51. I’ve been through this so many times with my favorite players. When Leetch got traded, I swore I was going to give up on the Rangers. He might have been my favorite player of any player ever on any pro team I rooted for. Seeing him in another uni just seemed wrong. I remember when Giacomin was traded, same thing. And Brad Park too, especially for Espo no less. But it’s a business, and you have to move on. Luckily in this case, St. Louis has always been one of my favorite non-Rangers, so that makes it easier.

I think this trade hurts more because Cally was a popular player and home grown. But if this team reels off 6 or 7 in a row, I’ll forget about it quickly :) I hated seeing Weight and Amonte go, but it helped us win a Cup. I can deal with it if we end up in the same place this year or next.

  52. AND, biggest point, ’94 was a tremendous historical outlier. This sort of thing almost never works out, even with better upgrades made to better starting points.

  53. @FriedgeHNIC Heard David Legwand just left ice at Nashville practice — and @JoshuaCooper just tweeted it

  54. On prinicpal, Girardi should be next captain.

  58. Carp, do you know if Callahan was still on the ice at the practice facility when this went down? It would be interesting to find out specifically how he found out, the players immediate reactions, etc.

  59. Oh, cool, we let Callahan go over $250K, or 0.35% of the entire cap. Way to play hardball, Sather.

    St, Louis in.

LETS GO BOYS , Our team had something we never had before according to Carp….TALENT!!! OH babyyyy , St. Louis is fast , ya see him score 2 goals the other day? He is gooooood. Rangers got better today folks if ya like it or not.

Callahan is a 2nd liner ,never won any medals, hits more then he scores ,great Ranger . If he goes down like a few years ago ..we are down and out. I noticed Cally wasn’t passing as much and was lookin like a guy wanting to prove hes the man ( Capt). In all reality he NEVER should have takin the roll as Capt on but really we never had anyone else. He was our best player drafted.

  64. Good God, Carcillo, with one lucky win over Lucic, now in running for extra F It Award.

  65. Stepan, Miller, 2016 1st, 2017 1st for Vanek. If Vanek resigns, we give the Isles our spot in the original 6 and our color scheme.

  66. Pierre LeBrun

LA Kings have acquired Marian Gaborik _ still pending trade call however

  67. Hank,

My son texted me saying that NHL Network showed Cally skating at Rangers practice, so they must have pulled him off when the trade went down.

  68. Hey Carp, can you please tell Pat Leonard that if he’s gonna retweet French quotes that he should translate them or something? I have no idea what any of that means. It would be like retweeting Jagr’s comments in Czech

  69. This franchise is officially dead. Stupid stupid stupid move by an egotistical dinosaur of a GM. You watch, Richards gets the C before tonight’s game and it’s announced he will not be bought out.

  70. Pat Leonard tweeted that Gaborik didn’t get traded to Los Angeles 1 minute before his peers all tweeted that Gaborik was traded to Los Angeles

guy is on top of things

  71. Kypreos is saying something called “Matt Frattin” was in the swap for Gaborik

  72. Ha. Look at the cost of Gaborik. Sather is just the best. Best best best best best.

  73. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

looks like that trade by slats getting rid of gabby was a pretty solid move

  74. I know, right, Gravy. I compared a guy like Gaborik, who could have teams competing for him, with a guy like St. Louis who would only accept a trade to one team. I totally ignored leverage.

  75. First, Rangers swap coaches; then, they swap captains. Could the much needed GM swap be too far away?

Well Torts , is losing every game with Vancouver and is crying that he was an IDIOT Coach a NEW YORK RANGERS saying all the dumb azz stuff about Hagelin and being a real Carcillio head .

  77. The comp is risk associated with the upgrade. Taking a low cost flyer on a Gabby type when you’re sitting low playoffs is fine. Paying a steep price for St. Louis to get you … what … locked into 6th? … is ridiculous. We made a trade a finishing touch trade on a roster not close to being elite.

  78. Maloney: “Cally was important to the room, valuable, not top 6 on a Stanley Cup team, not irreplaceable.”

  79. MD, I kinda disagree. I think Gaborik is a finishing touch, catch Lightnings in a bottle trade. MSL being signed next year does make a difference. No argument from me on the leverage.

  80. Doodie Machetto on

I’m not opposed to Callahan for St. Louis. It’s the draft picks that were dealt. It was a one team market!!

  81. AV gave the C to Luongo, right? Could def see it going to the King…not unprecedented. And, let’s be honest, he’s the voice and leader of this team…has been since he walked down the tunnel and took the job.

  82. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't hit me Callahan!!!"...says Greg L. on

HAHHAA Mister D is Mister mad aboot the trade , awww come here I’ll give ya a hug : )

  83. Technically, a goalie can’t get the C. AV got around it by just not sewing a C on anyone’s sweater.

  84. Frank Provenzano

With the return on Gaborik, the walls in the Islanders War Room are starting to look like the trash compacter scene from the 1st Star Wars

  85. Doodie is on point. It was a one team market. The draft picks are the problem. St. Louis is fifty times the player that Callahan is.

  86. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't hit me Callahan!!!"...says Greg L. on

Doodie , you worried about draft picks!!?? We took Mciilrath over Fowler !!! We aint getin NUTHIN for xmas ( Draft day).

  87. Yes.

I’m an isles fan. One of very few who doesn’t hate Garth Snow. People constantly highlight is mishaps, obviously you can look back in hindsight and say signing dipietro to a long term deal was a terrible move but at the time was signing an 20 year old all star goalie to a long term contract a bad idea?

  88. How can this compare to 1994 when the 1994 team was battling for best record in the league before trades?

  89. leetchhalloffame on

Understand the deal but Slats got fleeced with the draft choice situation. Don’t like that part of it one bit. Also who the hell is going to protect that midget? This team needs to get tougher and that doesn’t seem like it will happen today so we are no better in the long run.

  90. If Snow gets stuck with Vanek, or trades him for conditional picks, he’s even more of a joke than Sather.

  91. I am torn on this one.
Cally was perfect home grown captain. Loved the way he played, giving 100% all the time.
But 6M is way too much for him. This money is for 70-90 points players.
With St.Louis we are getting much better player even at 39.
He will lead us in points next year too.
The draft picks is a bit too much. I would be ok with 2 picks, bot not the 1st.
It was Cally choice to leave, but I was him and could get the money why not.

  92. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

You really have to think about if snow is a bigger schmo than slats…no contest

  93. St. Louis doesn’t need protection. He just needs his line mates to hole their weight. He was toe to toe with Backes last night, and I shouldn’t have to tell you that size difference.

  94. Sather > Snow.

That organization is a joke, having fire sales while so far under the cap, not signing their captain last year (could have overpaid to any amount), trading MacDonald.

  95. I have NEVER been this angry about this team in my life…I go back to the ’64 season when I was a kid…I’m 61 now…the next time they draft anyone who will help the team i’ll be checking out a plot in the great beyond..if tampa GAVE st. Louis to the rangers for a 6th pick, they still wouldn’t win the cup…but cally(understandable) AND a 1st,2nd maybe another 1st instead of the second.if they win two rounds, getting our hopes up again.then lose round 3,we have a 39(in june) yr old,and no no.1 pick this or next year…sather must have pictures of dolan with farm animals or with Elton john..i was shaking I was so pissed…all these other team(chi, bos, pit,la,ana, stl, det) rebuild the right way..even the lowly isles and sabres, maybe the friggin devils, will bypass us soon…if dolan gets to the 3rd round,he’ll allow cigar man to trade our picks the rest of the decade….I regret rooting for this team

  96. How in Holy Hell can Mike Gillies let Tortorella have any impact on the roster or future of the organization at this point. He’s outta there in 4-12 months.

  97. I’ve sold my entire wardrobe on eBay, purchased nothing but black and I’m listening to Joy Division. Anyone want some used lightbulbs?

  98. This is tough, but Sather could be doing the Rangers a favor in the long run. That is, if he buys out Richards this summer.

I have nothing but respect for Callahan. The qualities that make him what he is, are the qualities you wish you saw in more players. Well, in every player. But those qualities are big part of why his was not resigned.

I swear, during the 2012 run I heard those seven words in my head so many times:

“Captain Ryan Callahan, come get the Stanley Cup”

I hope we don’t see Tampa in the playoffs this year.

  99. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

Update,,,MSL chose cashews over almonds while in the air flying to new york

  100. My wife of 18 months, whom I turned on to hockey about 3-4 years ago, is devastated by the Rangers trading Callahan. Says I’m an evil, evil man who let her grow to love the sport and, especially, the players wearing the jersey.

It’s funny to me, because as a fan of over 30 years I’ve suffered through PLENTY of heartbreaking trades.

Nobody can doubt we got the better player in this deal. It’s not even up for debate. We got the FAR BETTER PLAYER. But Slats shoving two draft picks along reeks of his usual desperation to make a move.

There’s a reason why Glen Sather hasn’t done anything in a quarter of a century in the NHL. There’s a reason why he’s won nothing without guys like Gretz and Mess around. He’s the most overrated GM in the history of the sport. With an ego as overblown as Chris Drury’s reputation.

Callahan priced himself out, sad to say. God speed to him in his hockey career and with his family. But you just don’t give that kind of money to a guy who can’t crack the top two lines on his own team. We’ve seen what albatross contracts have done to us already…it was a move that, sadly, had to be made.

Take emotion out of it and we traded a good penalty killer for one of the Top 10 scorers in the entire league.

    It’s a no brainer.

And, sadly, the draft picks wouldn’t amount to anything anyway. Glen Sather has proven over the course of almost 3 decades that he has zero clue about young talent.

Goodbye Cally. You’ll be missed. But we’ll get over it.

Now put St. Louis on a line with Zuccarello and see if they are tall enough ride the Cyclone at Coney Island

  101. Legwand hasn’t been linked to the Rangers at all today. People are just screwing around.

  102. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

So Marty Brodeur wants to play meaningful minutes for a Cup contender….

Carey Price in injured, and Brodeur is loved in Montreal…

    …and Montreal acquires Devyn Dubnyk.

Read the writing on the wall, Marty.

  103. Legwand coming to NYR would mean that there is some shocking deal in which we dump one of our top 2 centers. Probably not happening.

  104. Loktionov going the other way. Lou really isnt as great of a GM as many people are making him out to be.

  105. In case anyone is wondering, I haven’t fully reacted yet. When the cost of Moulson matches the 1st + 2nd but not Callahan, that’s why I really explode. Tick, tick, tick …

  106. I’m still having a hard time understanding all these people high on callahan’s “heart”. If he was so heartful he wouldn’t be demanding such an outrageous number. No matter matter what his agent says. Unless agents completely control the process. Which seems absolutely ridiculous.

  107. No thanks, Jeff. Would rather have Moulson or, as a backup replacement for Callahan, Stewart.

  108. lou mounting up for the playoffs, building playable toughness, something sather seems to not understand.

  109. Apparently that Mason Raymond guy I have been whining about getting for the last year is available.

  110. I wanted Rutuu. more than good with the Cally deal, however and its a big however we buyout Richards….makes me nervous

  111. You can love your job and not be ok with your company undercutting your market value. Because, again, this is a job for the players. This is how they make their lifetime earnings.

  112. Because of his capitaincy and overall reverence among Rangers fans, Callahan felt like he had a lotto ticket to the tune of 8 years and $60 million. Don’t really blame him for trying to cash in but even at the considerably lower asking price the guy is still insanely overvalued. Let someone else overpay him.

That being said, 2 top picks plus Callahan for a near 39-year old forward sucks.

  113. Size doesn’t always help – look at Boyle – the guy is huge, but what does that matter. Nash is pretty damn big, but he’s not using it as well as he used to. I’m not so high on size…

  114. Your saying Callahan would be taking a pay cut by accepting less than 6.25 mill. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

  115. Kreider, Miller, 1st round picks from 2016-2030 for D. Sedin with a takeback option for Vancouver after this year.

  116. sather keeps throwing away draft picks like giving candy on Halloween. Apparently sather is back to his old habbits, throwing away future for quick fixes. I guess sather took notice what the knicks have been doing.

  117. Lloyd,

It goes to show how much Rangers fans overvalue their own homegrown players. Fans want to run the Canadian Gold Medalist Nash out of the country but wanted Callahan signed to a deal that severely overpaid him.

  118. Will be interesting to see how much or if St louis’ production drops playing with Richards rather than Stamkos.

  119. Like MSL, but grit-starved team loses major grit. Get some grit! 40 minutes ’til Midnight.

  120. This is BR’s team, has been since he was signed (he’s the one who asked for Gnash, asked to have MDZ excised, asked for MSL) and the Cigar’s eyes and ears in the dressing room…agreed, will be interesting to see whether he stays after this year. Later…

  121. speed > size

But speed AND size is what you want :) Hard to find those critters.

  122. Well, atleast that went better than Pettitte just after signing in Houston, right?

  123. Wow I think it sunk in for me the captain gone after hearing cally talk. She’d a tear.

  124. Stamkos hasn’t played a game since November 11. St. Louis has 22 goals and 23 assists since.

so yeah, I don’t think he’s reliant on Steven Stamkos

p.s. St. Louis has more points since November 11 than the Rangers leading scorer has for the entire season.

  125. Hard to understand the logic of so many who dislike Brad Richards yet like this trade.

  126. I’d like to take the opportunity to say this to Cally’s agent.

    Dear Cally’s agent,

    $$$$$ $$$$$$ $$$$ $$$$$$$$. $$$ $$$$$$$$$ $$ $$$ $$$$$ $$$$$$$ $ $$$ $$$$$$, $$$ $$$$$$$$$ $$ $ $$$$$$$. $$$$ $$ $$$$$$$ $ $$$$, $$$ $$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$ $$ $ $$$$$. $$$$ $$ $$$ $$$$$$$ $$$ $$$$$ $$ $$$$.

  127. Rob in Beantown on

Pierre just said he’s never seen a team lose their organ-i-zational identity faster than the Vancouver Canucks this year. Oof!

  128. Vanek is a Penguin. Good God i hope Fleury embarrasses himself again otherwise this is pretty bad.

  129. If it’s true, and Vanek goes to Pitt, that’s huge for us because it means they are *not* getting Kesler.

  130. Not having to pay Cally 6/6 is a good trade in and of itself. This trade is a first and a second for one of the league’s elite players. No brainer.

  131. Callahan sounds like he realized he byfugleined this one up. Still hate the trade, though.

  132. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Alain – please dial it down.

Ryan Callahan is a decent person, and we will miss him, even if we supported the trade.

Let’s not crap on him on the way out.

  133. Sutter and a pick is a very good return for a rental when your back is up against a 1 hour deadline.

  134. The rich get richer. Vanek on skid side geez.

Knew it was vanek or Kesler for them.

  135. Now Slats HAS to keep Richie to protect St. Louis, unless Hags turns into Dorsett. :)

  136. So the Pens improved by a wider gap than us today after starting today with a wide gap. Super.

  137. guys, please make sure you are using legit Twitter accounts and not just posting everything you read.

  138. Rob in Beantown on

    Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Tim Thomas headed to DAL. #Tradecentre

  139. Moulson to Minn. isn’t horrible for us. I would prefer him on our 3rd line.

  140. Huge bummer on Thomas headed to Dallas.

Best Reaction EVER. Luongo is a freaking GOD

    @strombone1 @TSNBobMcKenzie NOOOO!!!!!!!!

  141. Callahan deserves to be crapped on. He wasn’t interested in taking a home discount and didn’t care about the team’s cap. He wanted to be paid more than he’s worth with a complete disregard for the organization.

  142. _guys, please make sure you are using legit Twitter accounts and not just posting everything you read._

It was a legit account passing along a bad account. Fault lies beyond the nice people here.

  143. Thanks, The Doctor.

Also, shut up Lloyd. This is a free (meaning you don’t pay for it) website. If you want untainted information you probably shouldn’t rely on a bunch of completely over obsessed fans for up to the minute information within 1 hour of the trade deadline.

  144. I would, Carp. I regularly defer my raises to charities and less fortunate employees. (S)

  145. Carp posted the phony trade, Manny, not a “completely over obsessed fan.”

  146. JD should be the rangers GM. JD bled ranger red/blue/white and was a player for the rangers. Instead we get a overrated has been that never was.

  147. Really interested to see what Callahan signs for at this point. If he takes less than what NYR were offering him, that might change my can-do-no-wrong opinion of him. He should fire his agent as well if he accepts less.

  148. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

give us a couple of names that we may be in on late…PLEASE!

  149. @Eklund Moulson Details…Buffalo gets a second in 2014, 3rd in 2016….two other prospects changing hands

Haven’t done all my research on this twitter accuont, Lloyd. But this is really Eklund so take it for what it’s worth.

  150. He’s nowhere near worth 6.5. Even signing for 5.5 wouldn’t be a home discount.

  151. Rangers looking for D-man, don’t like the prices. Schultz goes for a 5th round pick. Now Sather has a problem trading picks?

  152. Hey everyone, please make sure you get the NHL trade call before commenting on what verified hockey accounts are posting on twitter, ok? Otherwise, look out, the lecture is coming and its coming hard. You’ve been warned.

  153. Carp, if I really liked my job I might, to a point. Grass isn’t always greener. That said, I don’t begrudge Cally for trying to maximize what he thinks he can get.

  154. Well TSN themselves, on their broadcast, had to admit that a fake Twitter account duped them as well.

So, again, Lloyd. Please shut up.

  155. For 1/24 of your salary, is it worth moving to Fla, making new living arrangements, leaving your family and young kids behind and starting all over with another round of new contract negotiations and toss your fate and your future location to the winds? I think so, but that’s just me.

  156. “Everybody knows how the business works,” Stastny said. “You can obviously go somewhere and get more money somewhere else. But if you have something good and you want to stick with it, that hometown discount is obviously something that everyone’s aware of and is important to do. You want both sides to be happy. You don’t want to (mistreat) the team and you want the team to be put in a good situation where they can kind of compete down the road as well.”

  157. Great call, The Doctor. I would recommend not just getting the trade call but checking with the NHL.COM Team Store to see if they are selling Sweaters with the alleged new player on the back. Further, I would order one, see if it comes, then try it on before trying to share any information with others completely unselfishly and for their benefit.

  158. or, you know, clicking a twitter link before making a fool of yourself, Manny

  159. Where the hell was the hometown discount from Lundqvist then? If he’s such a god and a wonderful person and teammate, then he should have taken a deal for $6X6.

God, everyone crucifying Callahan for this and not Lundqvist for being just as greedy make me sick to my stomach.

Prediction: Your preciouos Lundqvist and Nash both get season-ending injuries, MSL gets at career-ending concussion and Richards is totally healthy, named captain and gets a contract extension. All while the team DOES NOT make then playoffs.

  160. Idiot, you and the NHL offices both fell for a fake trade call. Don’t let it happen again.

  161. Oncupin74yearsandcounting on

Give me your #1 and a #2 and I’ll trade you my whole team player by player

  162. That’s a re-tweet from John Bartlett, Manny. Do you not know how the internet works?

  163. I wonder whether Cally was being manipulated by BR…for control of the soul of this team?;>(( Told him to hold out…don’t worry, Uncle Glennie will go half way at the end…Cally’s agent may be losing some clients, depending on what he gets after July 1. Is it technically possible for the Rangers to sign him over the summer?

  164. Hank did take a discount. He could have gotten much more on the open market.

  165. Lol, Gravy.

Correct Lloyd but it was Re-Tweeted by Bob McKenzie. Thanks for the lesson. I clearly know that you know how the internet works since you still have *NO AVATAR*

  166. Fat Marty definitely took a home team discount twice.

That along with alimony is why he needs to keep playing.

  167. When a player is comfortable and agrees to a home-town discount, that decision is made for his and his family’s various benefits, not loyalty to management, fans, or anything else.

  168. yes because choosing not to get an avatar is the same as passing along scoops based on fake twitter accounts. you sure nailed it.

  169. Rangers just landed Stamkos for a 2017 conditional pick as reported by @Pierrrre_LeBrrrrrrrrruuuuuun

    seems legit

  170. LOL! Craig Button talking about Thomas and Obama! No wonder this guy doesn’t have a job with an NHL team anymore!

  171. Where would Slats be now if Pocklington traded the Great one to Winnipeg instead of Edmonton.

  172. Get ready to implode, MD.

Nick; Guessing at this stage a second and a lower pick and a prospect. Something along those lines. Would be surprised if Wild gave up first for Moulson.

    Craig Custance

Don’t think the Wild would want to give up another first-rounder. I’d guess 2nd and prospect.

  173. Hey Manny, Lloyd doesn’t know that a legit Pittsburgh beat guy reported the Vanek “trade”. He thinks you got duped by a fake account. Lloyd doesn’t know how the internet works. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

  174. Don’t some give a bit of a discount to enable the team to build a cup contender within the cap?

  175. LOL, everybody getting their panties in a bunch over a fake twitter post.

    It’s Twitter for God’s sake.

  176. Hank has been the best goaltender in the NHL for the last several years. He would have been gotten a ton more in free agency.

  177. “Where would Slats be now if Pocklington traded the Great one to Winnipeg instead of Edmonton.”

  178. Oops, I meant if Skalbania traded Gretzky to Winnipeg instead of Pocklington and the Oilers, pretty much dropping a bunch of Stanley Cups in Slats’ lap.

  179. Robby Bonfire on

Well, let’s see, my NBA team (Philly) is tanking, and now my NHL team has succeeded in mortgaging the future for an extremely tentative present. As I said a couple days ago, this S.O.B. G.M. is going to play it like this team is one body from winning it all. How thrilling is it that this team is now just five bodies instead of six bodies from winning it all, with all the pickings in upcoming drafts of a scrap pile after the vultures have feasted?

  180. Yea, Carp. It’s Twitter. Where nothing is ever wrong or inaccurate. #integrity

  181. Tommy G. couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve made that statement more than once about JD. Instead Dolan keeps an overrated buffoon around. Probably thinks it’s keeping fans off his back. But it all goes back to Dolan. It’s on his head.

  182. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

I don’t care what hank would have received on the open market, I do not believe for a second you have to have a top 3 goalie in the league to win a cup.

I would have rather seen about 3 mil of that contract cap space going to other areas of need.

  183. _Get ready to implode, MD._

Its building. I’m going to go get a bucket for the bigger pieces of skull and paper towels for the blood and bits.

  184. BTW, those are posts from the live ESPN chat. I am working on confirming my sources.

  185. Hartford J.T. Miller (C) ADD Returned on loan from N.Y. Rangers (NHL)

    That’s on the AHL list

  186. Expect ray Shero and the pens to get Kesler or vanek for there price. They always do.

    Shero steals people

He’s an arrogant, money-grabbing assenwipe who doesn’t give a damn about the team, just about his face and modeling and his money.

  188. I would definitely do that, Stranger! Good call!

That Kesler to Pitt thing is fake, according to TSN

  189. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

Scroll up, I called mezsaros to bruins ;)

    Im beter than eklund

  190. Sather Must Go! on

If Buffalo wants a two for Stewart and we cant do it cause we included for St Louis that’s not good.. like him or not, stewart is big and has some “back class”

Cally plus a 1 and 2 for St Louis AND Stewart just sounds better

  191. You really shouldn’t be a sports fan if you resent athletes making money. It just can’t work out.

  192. Hank didn’t get max.

He could have signed a max 8 year deal with the Rangers or a max 7 year deal with any other team. He signed for 7. He also took less money per season than he would have gotten on the open market.

  193. NHL Network on SiriusXM is so dumb they’re reporting that Kuzma’s twitter account was “hacked.”

    come on, guys

  194. Ha, Manny, I was right. Lloyd doesn’t know who Rob Rossi is. He’s a *terrible* hockey fan.

  195. Even if JT Miller was sent down, he was probably going back there when Zucc is ready, which appears to be Friday. You just throw Dorsett into his role on the 3rd line tonight and move forward.

  196. Stranger Nation on

C’mon – someone wake up the Wizard and tell him to trade for some size and grit!!

  197. Lies, lies, lies!!

Lundqvist is the second worst thing to happen to this franchise, besides Sather. They deserve each other, dragging this franchise into a coffin.

  198. I can’t imagine being Terrible at being a hockey fan and getting an avatar and just being a mean person

  199. Will see what Ryan Miller and other UFA goalies get to get a better read on Hank.

  200. How can anyone possibly believe that Hank is a bad occurrence for the franchise?

  201. When Brodeur signed his last contract, it was considered a team friendly $5.2M AAV. The cap was $44M, so his charge was 11.8% of it.

If the cap goes to $71.1M (as projected), Lundqvist’s cap hit would be 12.0% of it.

  202. Sather Must Go! on

I still cant believe that the team actually got SMALLER as a result of the trade deadline

  203. Brodeur could have gotten a lot more on the open market twice.

It is doubtful Hank could have gotten more.

  204. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

OMG, there has to be more…size? grit? playable toughness?

  205. So which line does St. Louis drop into? If I had to guess, I would say he’ll play with Nash and Stepan and have Krieder take Callahan’s place with Richards and Hagelin.

  206. Better than Falk, maybe if they like him and he’s willing to sign he ends up being Stralman’s cheaper replacement next year.

  207. So all GMs protected their 1st round picks except Sather and the guy who was getting Miller and Ott for junk?

  208. Stempniak to Pitt I guess. TSN thinking Legwand has been traded.

Thank God Kesler didn’t go to the Pens.

  209. carp-it’s one thing to give a hometown discount..but even with the hometown discount, the difference is not life changing money, thusly you stay where you are if you like it and are comfortable there…

  210. Lundqvist definitely got the max and I don’t believe for a second that there was a GM out there willing to pay $9m+ for him by 7 years.

  211. MickeyM – Here is the difference between Lundqvist and Callahan.

Lundqvist=One of the best goalies in the NHL.
Callahan=One of the best forwards in the NHL – Not so much.

  212. Diaz and Gomez both have Spanish last names and played for Montreal. Maybe we can move Diaz for the next McDonagh.

  213. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

Mickey is a girl, and like everyone else here you are entitled to your opinion, but you should really Know WHO you are talking to and be respectful!!

  214. No, you are the moron, Alain. Stop sniffing Lundqvist’s jock and get with the real world. He IS the second worst thing to happen to the franchise and is bringing it down with his arrogance and wanting to be coddled.

  215. Wow Alain. Is Alain also LLoyd? Hard to tell with these jackwagons around here.

  216. Lundqvist is a jerk, plain and simple. He showed his true colors last year and this franchise will never win a Cup with him in goal.

  217. Problem is the newest ranger told the Air Dolan pilot his name was St. Louis and flew to Missouri.

  218. No, Hank didn’t definitely get the max. The max was 8 years and he signed for 7. Had he reached free agency, the more suitors bidding on his services would have resulted in a higher average annual value.

  219. Cut it out, Alain? MickeyM wishing injuries to Hank, Nash, and St. Louis and I have to cut it out.

  220. @BuffNewsVogl The Sabres’ Moulson deal is NOT the only one awaiting NHL trade call, according to league source. Buffalo has another move coming.

  221. If the Sabres have more going on it has to be either Tyler Myers or Chris Stewart (to us)

  222. LMGO

@GlobeKPD 47s Vanek is 6-2. League could deny trade to Montreal, based on fact he’s too tall to be a Habs forward.

  223. ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun Vanek to Montreal in exchange for a 2nd round pick and a prospect

    Fire Garth Snow!

  224. Oh man. The pick for Moulson is a 2nd. Sather is the worst GM and maybe the worst person.

  225. 2nd and a prospect for Vanek. So the Islanders traded Moulson and a 1st for a prospect. Emerging.

  226. Consider the following:
’92 Peter Ferraro, ’96 Jeff Brown,’97 Stefan Cherneski, ’98 Malhotra, ’99 Pavel Brendl, ’02 Lee Falardeau,’03 Hugh Jessiman, ’04 Al Montoya, ’06 Bobby Sanguinetti, ’08 Michael Del Zotto, ’10 Dylan McIlrath. Of this list only Montoya, Malhotra and MDZ are serviceable NHL players.

’01 Blackburn (freak injury),’07 Cherepanov (tragic death)

’05 Marc Staal (our lone 1st pick to meet/exceed expectations)

’09 Chris Kreider, ’11 JT Miller, ’12 Brady Skjei (All to soon to tell for sure, although Kreider and Miller seem to be poised to get over the hump)

In short, don’t worry about the picks. The Rangers usually screw it up anyway.

  227. Sather Must Go! on

Buffalo included Cody McCormick in Moulson deal – playable toughness, is there a team around that could have used that?

  228. “When you’re trying to buy in a buyer’s market, you’re going to have to severely overpay. That’s just how it goes.” – Glen Sather

  229. The Doctor: Especially if you’re in a market where the product only want to be purchased by one buyer and has the ability to control which buyer it is.

  230. _Wow, our price for St Louis just got way way grosserer._

Its unreal. Not impossible to say we could have protected both of our 1sts and Callahan and still added Moulson to the mix. All because of 0.35% of our cap. I’m going to go to Home Depot, buy a big ladder, climb onto my roof and then jump off my roof.

  231. “‘05 Marc Staal (our lone 1st pick to meet/exceed expectations)”

    I’d say meet…certainly not exceed.

  232. Been here longer than you, Alain. I get some leeway, you don’t you troll. Now go back to sniffing Lundqvist’s used shirt.

  233. “Lundqvist is the second worst thing to happen to this franchise, besides Sather. They deserve each other, dragging this franchise into a coffin.”

  234. So Vanek, Miller, McCormick, and Ott for Mitchell, Halak, Stewart, Carrier, a 1st in ’14, 1st in ’15, 2nd in ’15, 3rd in ’16, plus whatever picks the Wild send back?

    That’s how you rebuild.

  235. Robby Bonfire on

J.T. Miller goes back to Hartford, now, right? He’s just part of Rangers useless organizational sludge, no matter how well he plays up here, right, Uncle Glennie?

  236. @SNHockeyCentral 31s

Trade: BUF’s Jaroslav Halak to Washington, per @maydayhockey

Last one is a big one!

  237. Since Kesler nixed a deal with the Rangers, could the Rangers have made the same offer to Vancouver that they did to TB and wound up with Kesler instead of MSL? Would you have given up the same package for Kesler? I would have. Maybe MSL was just sloppy seconds.

  238. Is there any chance I’m about to wake up and it’ll be 7:30 and I’ll watch a presser where Sather and Callahan laugh that $250K almost drove a wedge?

  239. Sather Must Go! on

Not say he is the end all, but if McCormick was a available, Rangers shld have found a way to get him here (although just found out he is UFA after this year)

  240. Rob in Beantown on

    Rangers Report @rangersreport
So many franchises just flying into dumpsters.

    Present company included?

  241. Could the return be Holtby? Seems like Neuvirth does not think he’s been traded. Would Buffalo really accept one of the three Goaltending prospects that Washington has?

  242. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

caps got bigger and tougher and now have a very good goalie…not a good matchup for us in the playoffs

  243. Sather Must Go! on

yeah, I guess; he is just closer to a heavy than those two..sick of seeing them get pushed around, think better for playoffs (if applicable)

  244. Alain=massive troll. And don’t you DARE tell me that I’m not a true fan. You have no idea who I am.

Latona, think about it. If Lundqvist never gets drafted or becomes the number one goalie, maybe Sather is fired and the team has a competent GM over the arrogant has-been. Ergo, Lundqvist is the second worst thing to happen. After Sather himself.

  245. So some people are reporting that it is Neuvirth. So they traded their backup goaltender, who is, at time, better than their idiot starting goaltender LOLtby as well as being signed through 2015 and got a complete rental in Halak.

  246. Almost have to wait to judge the MSL trade until the offseason and see what Rammerfications it has on the Richards buyout and FA signings.

  247. Carp

it’s alarming how many Rangers moves can be described with those exact same words

  248. Festival week planned by 50 Newark Delicatessens to celebrate Marty’s retention.

  249. I guess I don’t hate the deal for the Capitals. They are stocked at goaltender in their system (which who knows how good they will actually be) and got Halak who they might be able to re-sign if they clear a few million in cap space.

  250. bull dog line on

  255. If Zucc isn’t ready to go tonight, why send Miller down to Hartford today?? I don’t understand the move…

  256. If Hank wasn’t drafted the Rangers would have gone out and found a competent goaltender.

Would the results have been so much different?

  257. They reportedly sent a plane AND a helicopter to get MSL here, uniformed, and ready to rock’n roll. True.

  258. Leave it to Grandpa Glen to wake up this morning, make the day’s biggest trade, and then nap up until right before the deadline when he makes another of his patented “why-did-we-trade-for-this-guy” deals.

glad both dorsett and carcillo will be in the line up…must NOT have them on same line though

  262. Mike Gillis has to be even worse than Scott Howson. Kesler is out of there at the end of this season, they’ll get nothing for him.

  263. Miller demotion not official yet … probably waiting for St. Louis to arrive … Guess they want Dorsett back in lineup, and Miller’s going down anyway when Zuccarello returns.

  264. Hey Carp and co- explain to me how acquiring a 39 year old is any better than letting Callahan walk on July 1? I mean they’ve essentially flushed another first round draft pick down the toilet (not that they’d know what to do with it if they kept it)DO NOT GET ME WRONG enough was enough with Callahan’s contract demands but let’s face it, if you were going to trade him the only picks involved should be coming BACK THIS WAY. even if it was a prospect or a 2nd and a 3rd at least you’re making a move towards the FUTURE. watching St Louis pop what I guess will be about 30 goals between this season and next isn’t a justifiable return in my opinion.

This team needed to get bigger grittier and younger and they did the exact opposite. top end skill? absolutely. Sure it’ll be fun to watch MSL score some goals but this team isn’t a realistic contender and won’t be next year either. So at 39 years old it’ll be nothing more than a side show. Uniting 2 players that won a Cup 7 years ago. All we have to look forward to is the eventual retirement (or passing since he’ll probably never step down) of Sather. Nothing’s going to progress until that happens. The identity and potential of this team that’s fell into Sather’s lap over the last few years is officially gone.

  265. The longer today goes on, the more I’m convinced Sather specifically engineered this trade to ruin my hockey fan life. It really hits on all points. The analytical side by giving up not only picks, but escalating picks. The emotional side by moving Callahan. And then the knife twist of doing it all in a buyer’s market over what amounts to less than 1% of the team’s cap. A masterpiece of spiteful incompetence.

  266. Doodie Machetto on

Staal, if not, why even make this trade? This is a win-now move. Sather must be thinking that now we have legit shot at CF.

  267. The Candiens will most likely make the playoffs, but if they don’t, the Isles don’t get the 2nd round pick. LOL.

  268. Thank You Martin St.Louis for coming here! This could be best trade ever for NYR! St.Louis is a super star and was best player in playoffs a couple of years ago! Wow!

  269. “Here’s the deal, we logically top out at the ECF because there are atleast two teams a clear tier above us in the conference. So what I need to do is find a way to make us maxing out while still not truly succeeding hurt even more than a typical ECF loss would.”

“What if you make that 2nd round pick become a 1st the second we’re eliminated from the playoffs.”

“Yes! Yes yes yes yes yes. That’s the solution.”

  270. Can’t wait to hear what San Jose offered us. I bet its amazing. We shouldn’t have given up a 1 + 1/2 for St. Louis as it was, but knowing that we could have made a different move will really help my mood.

  271. Do you think Kesler nixing the Rangers has everything to do with AV being the coach?

  272. & yes, we will miss Cally, but to get a player like ST.Louis for a guy who wanted super star pay and was a free agent is too good to be true for us Ranger fans! St.Louis has at least 3-4 good years left! and will make an impact on this team, he also kills penalties and can score short-handed, back-checks and is a great passer!

  273. I hope the expense expended in getting St. Louis to the Arena on time doesn’t count for the cap hit.

  274. Doodie Machetto on

If we somehow make it to the conference final, which Sather obviously thinks is a possibility or otherwise you don’t trade for a 38 year old MSL, we will be without a first round pick for three straight years.

That is just an absolute crusher to a franchise’s long-term viability.

  275. Totally carcards!!! St. Louis has been bottling up all his shorties since the last one in 2008-09 just for us!!!

  276. Afternoon all,

For everyone complaining about Glen Sather’s work today, how would you feel if Garthie the Snowman was your GM?

Callahan and his agent overvalued the product.

The Rangers got the best player in the deal. Period.

Sure, they gave picks away. But you never know how they’ll turn out. When you can get a proven commodity like St. Louis, you go for it.

And how will this trade look in the first week of July, when Callahan signs with Buffalo and Tampa is left with the picks only?

  277. _That is just an absolute crusher to a franchise’s long-term viability._

Or describes most of the last 15 years.

  278. _For everyone complaining about Glen Sather’s work today, how would you feel if Garthie the Snowman was your GM?_

Everyone out there sad about having a grandparent who died? How would you feel if all of your grandparents were dead?

  279. *Staal Wart* on

Doodie, that’s the problem…ha! a CF appearance is considered a success…other teams shoot to get to the Finals…lol

  280. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

Say what you want about slats, but I think it could be worse than him at GM

  281. If you line up the 30 GMs and draft, to end up with Sather, you’re picking in the 20s. And not trading the pick.

  282. Once Cally leaves Tampa, he can invest his riches in better golf clubs for use when everyone else for the next six years is in playoffs.

  283. So let’s take a look at the depth chart- who are our defensively responsible forwards? Do we have any size at center? are any centers capable of being legit two way center men? how’s the depth on RW? 39 year old, then Pouliot and Dorsett? Yeah things are going wonderfully.

  284. _Carp, any word as to whether the man behind the curtain will speak?_

    And interrupt his supper? C’mon.

  285. Slatsko Folkyerself on

For everyone complaining about Glen Sather’s work today, how would you feel if Garthie the Snowman was your GM?

I would feel we have the worst GM in hockey, and not the second worst.

  286. 2011-12 was such a cool *team*. This is a collection of more offensively talented guys.

  287. Garth Snow needs to get fired. I never thought I’d see him do a poor enough job that I actually would feel a little bad for them.

  288. Mickey drinking early today, huh? One of the less informed posters from over the years, I remember a few GEMS word for word.

  289. Sather is third worst until Snow and Gillis get fired after this season and he is still GM *forever*.

  290. Can we get a list of those super happy to see ol’ selfish Ryan out of town? I want to reference it when the inevitably bitching about us playing soft comes up again.

  291. Can we get a list of those super happy to see ol’ selfish Ryan out of town? I want to reference it when the inevitably whining about us playing soft comes up again.

  292. Wicky©Carp jinxed my macbook! on

Depending on matchup, we will be lucky if we get out of the first round

  293. Gravy, I look at Nash as a LW playing out of position. but its Potato PoTATo..if you look at him and MZA as RWs then my point is about the depth at LW…most importantly just the overall make up. This team is going to get one year out of St Louis. Just as they did with Richards.

  294. “Say what you want about slats, but I think it could be worse than him at GM”

    That’s the scary thing, wick!

  295. Happy to see overvalued, by fans and his agents, Ryan Callahan gone. If the Rangers don’t make the playoffs, it will not be because of the absence of Ryan Callahan.

  296. And Dubinsky and Prust leaving wouldn’t change the on ice product. I know. Toughness isn’t tied to actual tough players, its just an aura or something.

  297. Wick, they just don’t have the right make up with Callahan or St Louis or even if they landed Kesler (though he had plenty of tools they lack). Every season they just get further and further from the potential they once had to build on..

  298. Agreed, James G. This wasn’t a contender yesterday and isn’t a contender today. It is two very high picks poorer.

  299. Doodie Machetto on

“If you line up the 30 GMs and draft, to end up with Sather, you’re picking in the 20s. And not trading the pick.”

Are we only drafting currently employed GMs? Because I can think of some assistant GMs that I’d pick ahead of Sather.

Someone listed our RWs. Great! How about our centers and LWs? Not so great!

  300. Never thought Cally was selfish, just practical. His “leadership” and purported love for the Garden and fans was transferable and purchasable – that’s all I’m sayin’. Mickey Mouse is not so lovable and happy to see you if you don’t fork over the $ to enter the park.

  301. Oh god yes, Doodie. You start adding in assistants and buddies and people you only know over the internet and he’s going undrafted.

  302. Well, they certainly have committed to the speedy up-tempo style…guess we’ll see if it works.

  303. Sather got 24/25ths of the way to agreeing. That gap is on him, not on selfish heartless Callahan.

  304. Hot trade take by Missus D: “He won’t fit in down there. Its all old people and he’s such a young guy.”

  305. Being the hardline negotiator that he is, do you think Sather traded him to prove a point?

  306. bull dog line on

that 2011 team is gone. the coach is gone, and with that the style they played is gone.

Cally made a poor decision with the contract negotiations, if he really wanted to stay long term. I don’t believe he did. I think he was hoping to get past today unsigned, and not traded, then leave as a UFA. Sather did the right thing by trading him. you can argue the value if you like, but not the decision to trade him.

  307. _Being the hardline negotiator that he is, do you think Sather traded him to prove a point?_

I think if Callahan went to $6.05MM Sather would have held. Yes.

  308. Rangers Report ?@rangersreport 1m

A bottom line: At considerable cost, and discounting age, the Rangers got the best player who moved today.

Carpy excited about Diaz I see

  309. Graves, every exec comes to a point where he’s tired of incessant whining and pushes the button. The real reason for sports agents is to separate the two parties from inevitable recrimination.

  310. Could we survive rest of season without naming a new C? Could use it as bait to sign Cally in July one reasonable terms after we dump Richards…

After stewing in Tampa for a few months, I’d hope he’d come to the realization not many people have the privilege of wearing the C for the Rangers

  311. bull dog line on

this is not on Sather. this is on Callahan. 5×6 was more than fair, and after Sather offered 6×6 Cally should have run, not walk, to sign that deal.

  312. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't hit me Callahan!!!"...says Greg L. on

THE GAME is gonna be fun TONIGHT!!!!!

  313. From what I recall, St. Louis had a lot to do with one of the single most successful PP’s in the NHL. That’s prett yawesome.

  314. I’m glad they traded him, do not get me wrong Bull. I was hoping you’d be one of the go to guys to back me up on this. Our GM is looking into a microscope using a 100x objective when he needs to flip it back to 4x . You get St Louis at an advanced age to score some goals. By the time you get this team to even start out in the direction of being a legit contender St Louis is long gone. And all you’ve gotten out of the Callahan trade was some goals and some jersey sales next season. They weren’t getting anything for Callahan if he walked. They got St Louis. How’s that work out with the big picture in focus?

  315. Doodie- the other trolls are the tough guys, thanks for playing.

Salty- I only call them as I see them and if you don’t like it, then don’t read it. That’s easy enough to understand.

This deal will ensure the team does NOT make the playoffs. In fact, I would suspect they turtle very early on in the playoff hunt since it’s a team full of softies.

  316. The deal was essentially St Louis for a couple of picks. Callahan will be a UFA this summer as he would have been with the Rangers. The Rangers still have the opportunity to pony up the money to sign him in the summer. The question becomes, would the Rangers have gotten better out of those 2 draft picks than MSL? Proven talent is greater than draft picks. Most draft picks are hit or miss. MSL is still a point per game star.

  317. All these comments and potshots are just reasons I rarely come here any more. Can’t stand the boot licking of Nash and Lundqvist.

  318. You know what I hope for Carp? I hope they meet up with Boston in the post season so that Sather can see his short comings exposed two years in a row.

  319. Rob in Beantown on

Carp, what are the odds the Rangers re-sign Callahan over the summer? Better than zero?

  320. “Dany heatley for 2nd round pick and Jesper fast. U heard it here first”

    And last!

  321. Coos they cannot be ignorant enough to keep Richards over the summer. They. Can. Not. Be. That. Ignorant.

  322. And if you all think that this isn’t a sign that Richards is staying, you’re all crazy.

  323. ThisYearsModel on

The deadline deals showed the true trade value of Ryan Callahan. Look at what Vanek and Moulson brought. The deal was obviously more about the picks to Tampa Bay than it was Cally.

  324. Suzie Chapstick on

Not to take away from the ranting and apologies if I’m not supposed to ask here – but anyone have a pair for tonight that they would like to sell? Been on HF boards but nothing yet..gonna walk over to the garden after work.

Also Carp, what are the chances they sign Cally in the offseason? There are no rules against it and if he does decide he wants to stay, isn’t that a possibility? Does it not happen because it is frowned upon in GM or player circles? What prevents a backroom deal like hey cally, let us get marty then we’ll sign you in the summer wink wink?

  325. If we get our PP in super motion, it will help out with our general softness, but not the playoff face-washes, on-ice intimidation, un-penalized cross-checks if we approach the crease, and after whistle scrums.

  326. “James G

You know what I hope for Carp? I hope they meet up with Boston in the post season so that Sather can see his short comings exposed two years in a row”

  327. Sather has not seen his shortcomings for this entire century, but if the Rangers lose in the playoffs this year, he will finally see them. There’s a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.

  328. Wicky©We need playable INTIMIDATION! on

Maybe i need to re evaluate my phrase playable toughness because sooo many people think cally was “tough”. Ok, he was “tough” in a sense of tried hard and played hard, but didn’t really concern anyone on the ice. So I am changing my wanting “playable toughness” to “playable intimidation” so some of you do not get confused about what this team lacks…we need PLAYABLE INTIMIDATION badly!!

    Again, playable toughness=playable intimidation!!!

  329. Mickey what makes you so sure of Richards staying? Because he and St. Louis are former teammates? What’s a 39 year old got to do with Richards being here 6 more years?

  330. Pittsburgh did really well their deals today. Goc and Stempniak are good depth players for a Cup contender. Glen Sather doesn’t know how to make moves like that.

  331. Slatsko Folkyerself on

I would say you have about as much chance of Callahan coming back to NY as a sheep does of killing the butcher.

  332. The Martin St. Looie siutation viz a viz Yzerman is why baseball managers take their unvoted-in players to the All Star game over more talented picks.

  333. Yea he seemed to be pumping up getting cally, but you can tell he knows what he lost.

  334. I wonder if Diaz will step in over J. Moore, who has spent a bunch of games on the bench for the 3rd period.

  335. Chara and Lucic have to be top 10 playable intimidation and from Savard through Eriksson it hasn’t translated to protection. When I say tough, I just want a team that hits and can maybe get some turnovers out of it rather than being so damn easy to play against.

  336. Doodie Machetto on

“Sather did the right thing by trading him. you can argue the value if you like, but not the decision to trade him.”

bull dog, I think that’s my point. I wasn’t totally opposed to trading Callahan. I just really hate the return. A 1st and a 2nd (that’s potentially a 1st) for a guy who wasn’t going anywhere else?

Look at the Blues trade with the Sabres. Stewart, Halak, a 1st and conditional third for Miller and Ott. And there was absolutely no marketplace for Miller. Plus they get Ott.

Sather just bid against himself. I bet they were on the phone, Yzerman put himself on mute and let Sather keep upping his offer, while Yzerman laughed out loud on the other side of the line.

  337. Lloyd, I think the problem with Sather has less to do with making depth moves for a Cup contender than it does with knowing how to actually build a Cup contender.

Slatsko, what if the butcher is Sather? Then I’d say the sheep has pretty reasonable chances.

  338. I think at this point it’s looking more likely that John Moore could some day turn into Fred the Baker

  339. Latona, you’re definitely right about that. I was just pointing out one of the many ways that Glen Sather has distinguished himself as an utterly inept NHL GM since getting the job with the Rangers. The guy doesn’t know how to build period.

  340. Rob in Beantown on

Yzerman’s BATNA was to just hold on to St. Louis, though. I agree we traded too much, but even if Sather wasn’t bidding against anybody else, there was not a lot of urgency for Tampa to make the deal.

  341. Yzerman sure is laughing right now.

This deal could never be MSL for Callahan straight up.

  342. Lev, Manny can confirm from an early AM email I would have been *thrilled* to come out of today with just minor moves like those (or nothing at all). So atleast one *nice* fan would have been *very happy*.

  343. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't hit me Callahan!!!"...says Greg L. on

Callahan heart wasn’t in NY anymore…BRING ON THE ART ROSS CHAMP!!!

MARTY is a locker room presence. If ya don’t see it , you will. You will…

  344. James G- because its Sather. He would do it to prove that he’s right- the Richards was the best thing since sliced bread and that and he alone is calling the shots. Richards wants a buddy here? Conviently MSL wants to be here. Voila- Sather makes a horrid deal to keep old horseteeth happy.

God, I wish Sather would get lost in Canada somewhere.

  345. I guess I should be praising Sather for managing to acquire two players that I’d actually heard of before today.

  346. Yzerman laughing at pushing MSL to demand a trade, and only to NY? Doubt the fans are laughing along with him.

Spent a lot of time in the Tampa Bay locker room, have you

  350. St. Looie erupted in anger over being dissed Maybe that’s what we need in this locker room instead of complaisance.

  351. Lloyd, agreed. The Diaz move wouldn’t have been bad for a true Cup contender as well. But, this is NYR. So, yeah.

  352. Columbus and Tampa just made a deal that looks right in Sather’s wheelhouse

  353. Oh Canada, our home and native land. Rejoice. Gold medalists Rick Nash and Marty St Louis will link up.

  354. Oncupin74yearsandcounting on

The organization has taken a giant step back…

I really do believe that ONECUP is all most of us will see in our lifetime.

  355. Latona,

I’ll say this: if this deal was Callahan plus 1 of the picks, I think you walk away being pleased at a pretty good trade. That he potentially gave away 2 number 1s makes him look senile.

  356. ThisYearsModel on

If it looks senile… is senile. It puts the lotion into the basket with a couple #1 draft picks.

  357. to not be Nancy Negative for a sec…

St. Louis is on pace for what would put him roughly in the top 5 best seasons he’s ever had.

    Now to be Ricky Reality…

What is going to ruin that?

  358. Stranger Nation on

MStL will love aV’s system, that’s for sure. Our PP just got much better and with Zucc coming back could return to lethal status.

Would suggest putting J Moore and Stralman on PP Pts – to of our most mobile d men; no more Bucky at the point.

  359. bull dog line on

the best player traded today was St Louis. the Rangers got him. he is not a rental. reasonable cap hit. the Rangers win the day.

  360. only way Rangers win the day is if you believe (not unreasonably) that 1st and 2nd round picks are worthless in the hands of Glen Sather and co.

  361. If MSL had not listed ONLY Rangers as a destination, Yzerman would have been able to make a better deal elsewhere, and would have.

  362. no idea but that he didn’t hand one to Ryan Callahan was the smartest thing he’s done today

  363. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

So if I read into some of the comments from the presser with slats/AV….

Dorsett and his grit made cally expendable!?

  364. So open field means MSL returns a strong rental and 3 firsts or something? The extra year is nice but it’s not that nice, esp when you look at the Vanek and Moulson costs.

  365. based on the nonsense you folks spew about humps like Dorsett, he would absolutely make Callahan expendable given the entrance of a dramatically superior offensive player

  366. I wonder if we’ll ever know the backup Callahan deal because that’ll let us know just how “great” this trade is. Even if it was just a 2nd, that means we traded a 1 and 1/2 and a 2 for MSL. Who is the last guy who went for that kind of pick return?

  367. Hmm. Why didn’t anyone notice that Cally’s No Trade demands played a part as large as salary disagreement? (as per Slats)

  368. cooscoos,

The actual Pierre LeBrun, not the one people here cited as a source for a Vanek trade to Pittsburgh, posted this 4 hours ago:

    Pierre LeBrun ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun 4h

Callahan and Rangers were really close at the end, just $200,000 apart a year or so… lack of NTC in deal apparently big issue though…

  369. Stranger Nation on

Lloyd – thanks for coming back to remind everyone of a complete jackwaggon you are

  370. Wicky©This team needs playable INTIMIDATION!! on

wow stamkos sounds like his dog got rn over

  371. I got a notification from my ESPN app that the Rangers got Raphael Diaz from the Canucks but dont see it on Rangers website, ESPN, or…anyone else hear/read that? And idk much about him, so if it is true, is that a good pick up? Thanks and LETS GO RANGERS…btw, FWIW, read online earlier Rangers sent a private jet to pick up St. Louis so he’d make tonight’s game…wonder if they took Cally down there also lol

  372. Money aside, Sather traded a 29-year old AND two high draft picks for a 38 year old. How the hell does that make sense on any planet? And MSL told Yzerman that he wanted to be traded and only to the Rangers! So why did we have to pay a premium? It would be different if we were one player away, like the MEts when they traded for Gary Carter. But we’re not even in the same league as the real contenders. The most frustrating part is that when the deal backfires and the dust settles, Sather will still be in charge. There’s just no hope.
