I haven’t been following Group A of the women’s tournament except for today (as these were the games that were actually going to be contests). Why is Labonte starting over Szabados?

  2. Rob in Beantown on

Jonathan Quick will start for USA tomorrow. Not sure I agree with that. It seems like it should be Miller’s job to lose.

  3. Question to anyone who follows Women’s hockey. I know Amanda Kessel is Phil’s sister. There is someone on US team with the last name Bozak, and #3 on Canada named Laraque. Are they related to any hockey players too? Wonderful families?

  4. When are these American women going to man-up and take it to the Canadians? This is unacceptable.

  5. I can’t watch sports events that aren’t live.

Except for non-sports like the Mrs enjoys (figure skating and the such)

    My impressions through two:

    1) USA is carrying the play. Canada seems content to sit back, put the body on us, then try and counter if an opportunity presents itself. Very little sustained pressure by Canada. Will be interesting to see if that strategy changes down 1-0 or if they just play physically to send a message for the Final.

    2) Kessel needs to use her liberates more. Once the puck is on her stick, it does not touch another American stick until Canada has had possession. Either she tries to carry in 1 on 2 or even 3, or she puts it on goal. She needs to work it out to her teammates which will help her in two ways. First, the Canadians won’t be able to focus all of the attention on her. And second, it will allow her to get into a better scoring position before receiving the puck. But man, I love her game.

    3) The best line in this game is that of the Lamereaux twins, but it’s their line mate Duggan who has been the best player on that line. The Lamereauxs look like they couldn’t put it in the ocean.

    4) Both goaltenders are starting to slip a little bit from their early form, especially Vetter. She was absorbing everything that hit her, now a few pucks hit her and drop down in front of her to cover. Not a huge deal, but if a Canadian stick is there, they might poke one home.

    5) Ray Castoldi is amazing. I’ve heard him play Brass bonanza, Hava na gila(sp.?), bohemian rhapsody, and the house of the rising sun. Amazing.

    6) I’m interested to see if Canada is playing possum for the gold medal game or if this is really all they’ve got. Because if they play like this against the Americans again, America is winning that game.

I was going through the Battery Tunnel during the first four minutes of the third. I missed the first Canadian goal entirely. How did it happen?

The second goal, which I saw on a replay, was almost just as I said: Vetter drops a rebound in front of her to cover, exept instead of a Canadian stick poking it home, it was an American one.

That third goal also as I said: Canadians on the counter.

Did the referees really allow a goal after the whistle? If so that’s just about the most inexcusable call

  9. Doodie Machetto on

The refs blew an early whistle on a puck that was not even remotely covered. Instead of being covered, the American defender (Schlepper), in an attempt to play it into Vetter’s glove for the cover, actually slid it into the goal. The whistle blew while the puck was sliding under Vetter. It was CLEARLY not in, but it also CLEARLY should not have been blown. Two wrongs make a right?

  10. Well, they both know they can beat each other, but they already knew that. Disappointing. Neither team looked very good.

  11. Doodie Machetto on

I thought USA looked awesome through two. Finishing needed to be better, but I thought they were playing great hockey.

  12. They’ve played much better against this team. There were moments that will give them hope, though.

  13. The whistled goal isn’t the only controversy so far. Japan appeared to have scored against Russia yesterday, but the play was never even reviewed.

  14. ilb, I dunno about Laraque, but the chick on Team USA is “Bozek” not “Bozak.” I’m sure her family is wonderful anyway..

“SOCHI, RUSSIA—Engrossed by the competitive game’s odd rituals and strange rules, Americans across the country reportedly expressed fascination Wednesday upon discovering the bizarre Olympic sport of hockey. “From what I can tell, it’s this weird foreign ice sport with a lot of sticks, but it’s really interesting watching everyone chase after this little black disc,” said Bellevue, NE resident Lucas Castillo, 32, who was captivated by the strange intermissions when a loud siren blared, the competitors left the playing field, and a mascot entertained the crowd by driving a funny vehicle on the ice.“I can kind of follow it, but I never really know what’s going on. Players try to put the disc in the net, but they have to avoid crossing weird lines on the ice or something. It’s one of those things that’s fun to watch during the Olympics, but it’s easy to see why it hasn’t caught on like handball.” Despite their mild interest in the sport, Americans unanimously confirmed that there’s no way hockey could ever gain widespread popularity in the United States.”

  16. Breaking News: Czech Republic’s Petr Prucha has been offically listed as “Prucha’d” for the rest of the tournament.

  17. Im listening to the Canadian broadcast…”the goalie has to have that one” .

They are already talking about pulling the goalie

  18. Rob in Beantown on

    Jason Brough @JasonPHT
Henrik Lundqvist credited with a second assist on Berglund’s goal. Piling up the points already.

  19. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Who chose to put on Suiss vs. Latvia on NBC instead of this Sweden vs. Czech game?

  20. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I literally don’t know. But the announcers for the Suiss/Latvia game said “so and so” of the Hartford Wolfpack…

  21. Rob in Beantown on

For this game you need to have your credentials from your cable subscription to watch it. It isn’t free if you don’t have cable.

The U.S. games may be free, I don’t know.

  22. Rob in Beantown on

    Dan Marrazza @DanMarrazza
Remember, goal differential is a tiebreaker, so running up the score will benefit #Sweden a lot.

  23. My guess is that they were referring to Swissman Andres Ambuhl, who played for Hartford several seasons ago.

MDZ and Seguin on vacation together. Seguin looks high as a kite.

I’m not working today because I had an *upper endoscopy* this morning. The anesthesia was awesome. So don’t envy that.

  26. Rob in Beantown on

Czechs outshot the Swedes 29-25. Where’s Eddie to calculate a save percentage when you need him?

  27. Rob in Beantown on

They’re interviewing Lundqvist now. If you look up close you can see that Nike _seriously_ put Viking ships on the Sweden Jerseys. Way to ruin the classiest international sweaters in the world, Nike

  28. I’ll have to break out my Sweden Jersey for the replay :)

Last time we were in New York, the night they won the Super bowl. We friended some guys from Sweden, at an Irish bar, go figure. We became “facebook” friends, and kept in touch.

We had a side bet last year for the World Juniors, USA vs Sweden gold medal game. USA wins – Jonas sends me a Forsberg Yellow Jersey. I have to say it is one of my favorites.

  29. Rob in Beantown on

Can somebody explain to me why Ted Nolan is the coach of the Latvian National team? Is he *Latvian*?

  30. Babcock said the day Nash was named that he wanted him to participate in the PK. Nash IS large, with a long reach, and can be very fast if motivated – and has killed penalties in the past. Maybe the large ice fits his ‘latent’ D game? Who knows?

  31. looks like snider (aka comcast)
    is going to gobble up
    Time Warner Cable

    should i worry?
(rates? channel selection? 24/7 flyers commercials on every channel? bills that come in the colors orange and black?)

  32. Interesting thing about the Comcast/TWC deal. Charter offered MORE money in the stock price ($160) than TWC is getting from Comcast.
