STADIUM SERIES RECAP: The Rangers swept their two-game Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium to improve to 3-0-0 all-time in regular season outdoor games. The Blueshirts are the only team in the NHL with two or more regular season outdoor victories, and have come back from behind in each of their three wins. The Rangers defeated the Islanders, 2-1, on Jan. 29 at Yankee Stadium, and won by a 7-3 score over the Devils on Jan. 26 in their first Stadium Series game. He notched the opening goal in two straight games during his five-game goal streak – Jan. 19 (1:10 of the 1st) and Jan. 21 (1:02 of the 1st). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last Rangers player to score a goal within the game’s opening 70 seconds in consecutive games was Jan Hlavac in 1999-00. Nash was also credited with the game-winning goal in four straight games in which he scored a goal from Jan. 10 – Jan. 19, becoming the first Blueshirt to do so since Tom Poti in 2003-04.

THE PUCK STOPS HERE: The Blueshirts have allowed two goals or fewer in 33 of 56 games this season, including 10 of their last 12 contests. The Rangers have also allowed two goals or fewer in seven of their last eight games at home and eight of their last 10 at Madison Square Garden. New York is 26-7-0 when holding opponents to two goals or less.

  1. Shut em down for 58 minutes they still tie it up and win In overtime. Gonna be a tough one tonight. Cannot concede the first goal. Must not be distracted by cally rumors. Got a bad feeling about this one but not as bad as the St. Louis game. We will see……

  2. Is Cally distracted…or focused on showing intetested teams he is worth 7mm….of course there might be some hesitation on blocking shots or extra hits…dont want to be known as injury prone…but of course…the act of avoidance may lead to an injury….business side of the game is never pleasant…good luck to all sides…especially ours!

  3. SeeeDubbb says Sign Cally on

Time to take some points from a western conf. team. I think we will. Let’s make it a season long streak and win this fourth in a row.

    LGR !!!

    Sign the Captain.

  4. wow!! can’t believe the flyers beat the sharks and Columbus beat the best team i9n hockey both on the road. Looks like this metropolitan division is going to be a barn burner to make the playoffs.

  5. callahan getting injured isn’t going to make the rangers keep him, it will allow callahan to sign with another team in the off season and the rangers getting nothing for him.

  6. Tommy G, or, it will show other teams and perhaps Cally (and his agent) that asking for 7 years is foolish!!!!

  7. first of all, Callahan isn’t even worth 6 million a year, never mind 6.8 million a year and definitely not worth giving a 7 year contract. All it takes is one team to give Callahan what he wants and as we’ve seen over the past several years there’s always a dumb enough GM that will pay. It’s not going to stop a GM from over paying and Callahan getting injured isn’t going to stop that GM for over paying to get Callahan.

  8. Any GM willing to give Callahan 7 million dollars needs to be fired. You cannot pay players of his caliber that type of money in this cap era and not expect a lock out every few years. And Sather certainly can’t give him that kind of money and additionally bring in the type of guys we need to make the team a success at some point. That being said I’d still rather have him than not. so once again, this sucks.

  9. Stranger Nation on

$6.8 for 7 years is what it costs to play on Richards’ line…it’s like playing shorthanded when 5v5.

  10. Good morning, boneheads!

Wow, if his demands are truly in the range of $6.75Mx7 years then Sather doesn’t have a choice. The gap is way too big. Sounds like both parties are trying to play this one out.

  11. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I will be seeing *Amon Amarth* tonight. Opening for them is a band I don’t care much for, *SkeletonWitch* and another band whom I am most excited to see, *ENSLAVED*

  12. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Also, while I don’t want to see Callahan go, and think he is completely, 100% irreplaceable, I understand what your saying, James. This is exactly the situation that leads to lockouts. It’s the combination of the Cap and the Penalties. It isn’t like Baseball where you can just bury a contract and it only costs you money. In the NHL bad contracts cost you roster space.

  13. I totally agree with you, Tommy G. Everything you say makes sense; the dumb GM, the exorbitant annual cap hit, the years he wants, everything!!! But I still want him to stay a Ranger Captain!!

  14. We need to all have a little talk. His asking price can’t be insane if we recognize slash fear he’ll get that asking price on the open market. And it seems pretty hard to even lament salaries in a league that just shut its players out to reduce wages despite being financially healthy. At some point just accept “players make a lot of money, even if they aren’t Crosby or Stamkos” and maybe you’ll be a little happier. You can still debate whether individual players are worth it, but taking it to the next level or WHO THE F DOES HE THINK HE IS ASKING FOR THAT KIND OF CONTRACT I NOW HATE THIS PLAYER I LOVED is just ridiculous.

  15. Both my grandmothers are dead, but I bet one would like Callahan (catholic NYer) and the other one would smile nicely but not know what hockey is.

  16. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I think the issue there, *The Doctor* is that there isn’t enough of a disparity between the *Crosby* contract and the *Clarkson* contract. The salary cap needs to be significantly increased for that *disparity* to be acceptable.

  17. Rob in Beantown on

He’s probably gotten used to the new pads enough that it might mess him up to go back to the old ones, and then he’d have to readjust after the Olympics. Probably a good idea.

  18. Of course he is used to his new equipment. I like this one though, I thought it was said directly to this one jackwagon who was constantly wishing Hank would lose a game or two.

“The people who said that the pads were the reason I was not playing well, or said I’d been good before because I’d been cheating, maybe I’d care if they weren’t ignorant about the game and the position,” Lundqvist told The Post.”

  19. I worried about that being a factor, but I’m glad its not and also I’m very ignorant to the position.

  20. Excellent statement, Hank!!!! All the anti-Ranger and anti-Hank fans were saying that he slumped because he had to go with smaller pads.

  21. Manny, don’t forget to pack your inflatable *Viking* *WAR* *HAMMER* to the show. Gotta fit in.

  22. Mr.

Hard cap means tough decisions. If I have to choose between the front and the back of the jersey, it’ll be the front every time. 6,5/6,75 or 7 mill for seven years? No way compadre.

  23. I have no issue with Cally asking for the moon, but the Rangers can’t give it to him. He’s not good enough to warrant a contract like that.

Doesn’t make him a “bad captain”

  24. Funny thing is, the only people who truly know about what is going on are Sather and very close Co., Callahan and his agent. We are left with a lot of guesses and rumors. Maybe overreacting isn’t what we should do?

  25. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

You laugh *Booby* but I Have one! Just kidding. I do not. But last time I saw *Amon Amarth* a lot of people did have them. Then their parents were waiting outside to walk them home.

  26. Lets flip this over from a Ranger-centric viewpoint: If you’re Callahan, how do you _not_ ask for (and expect) more than Richards gets annually? Seriously.

  27. It sounds like Bartlett is going to talk to Sather this week, *and* both sides have been quiet about what’s going on the past few days, *and* the talks with other team(s) have been substantive *might* lead to some more fruitful negotiations.

And, I agree with MD’s point. Every year that goes by from when Crosby, Tavares, Stamkos, Nash, etc. signed, you’re going to get contracts that make those look like bargains.

  28. repost:

Callahan does have an ability to score some amazing goals.

Sather needs to decide on other soon to be UFAs before the deadline.

Pouliot should be re-signed for 2 years.

Carcillo should probably be re-signed for about 1 mil.

Dominic Moore and Boyle probably traded especially with great penalty killers like Powe and Fast down in Hartford.

Stralman and Girardi are a tough call I am guessing Stralman re-signs for about 2 mil, if not then trade him wouldn’t miss him too much as he has been not as physical as he used to be and not producing many points like I thought he would under AV.

Girardi is a tough call on one hand he is very good on the other hand not really and somewhat overrated, not to mention slow. If we can get a big return for him we should do it, if not then re-sign him for 5 to 5.5 mil.

Callahan + Stralman + Moore for Stewart + Polak + Lapierre + prospect/draftpick that would make us a much tougher team to play against. Stralman had his best offensive season under Hitchcock. Lapierre had good success under AV. this would be an awesome trade for us.

Carp, if you are connected to people that have Sather’s ear, maybe you could suggest this trade? If Blues really want Callahan I think they wouldn’t mind this trade. Moore could be “upgraded” to Boyle if they aren’t crazy about Moore.

BTW I have this feeling that it is Brad Richards who is giving bad advice to players like Callahan to demand crazy contracts.

  29. Cally has earned the right to try and get what he’s asking for. I remember the last time I stepped in front of a 100mph Chara shot at work and broke myself. Once the pain subsided I immediately decided that I wanted more money.

  30. Also: We should trade Stralman. Girardi and Klein can carry the RHD minutes for the rest of the year and he might bring us back more than he should. That’s the kind of UFA you can safely dump.

  31. Stranger Nation on

Like Richards, Cally will learn to go UFA and make boat loads of money being over paid for on ice performance.

Just like the Stars would not sign Richards for that money and those years. They knew what they had…or didn’t have…

    It’s business…not personal

  32. QQQ, how about an avatar to express your *individuality*? Maybe something with the letter “Q” in it?

  33. MD…I was thinking the same thing recently. What do you think we could realistically get for Stralman?

  34. “QQQ, how about an avatar to express your individuality? Maybe something with the letter “Q” in it?”

I don’t see a way to do it

  35. Some very average players were traded for a 2nd round pick in recent years. Maybe we can find the dumb GM this time around.

  36. In my perfect world, he brings a excess 3rd liner from a team that needs D and has too many forwards. Like an Abdelkader-ish player from before Detroit had everyone start getting injured and Abdelkader started playing up.

  37. A hard to play against young 3rd liner (not coming from St. Louis carrying a $4MM price tag) would be a cool thing for this roster.

  38. QQQ, you just have to sign up at en.gravatar.com and upload a photo. It’s free, and they don’t spam you.

  39. _So a tougher and less dumb Pouliot. I like it._

More or less. A guy who helps you avoid the need to rotate through Pouliots every offseason.

  40. Abdelkader not only is good at hockey, but also has a name that sounds likes something you would use to *dismember* someone.

  41. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

?@KatieStrangESPN #NYR Ryan Callahan is on the ice for Rangers morning skate at MSG

    Not Traided yet!

  42. here is the really unfair thing, Richards will get bought out( we all hope n pray). Then another team picks him up for 2.5 million more. somebody help me on how much Bucky gets I n his pocket for being bought out. Sick n it’s throwing the whole league off along with Kelly Clarkston

  43. Vanek turns down $50M/7yr deal. Yikes.

I guess he doesn’t like scoring a point per game with Tavares.

At least he’s had a 40-40 80pt year, and scored 40 goals twice. I would think he would be the right addition, but would he play for Rangers?

Seriously, for a production point of view, points, goals, overall talent. Wouldn’t the Rangers be better with Vanek over Callahan. If you had to pay one guy $50M? Basically Richie Rich’s money after he’s bought out this summer.

  44. Callahan. I’m working on a new theory that contact-averse, points only players are the least efficient means of building a team. I need more time to flesh it out, but it goes along the lines of “they always look great but your team eventually tops out because they can be neutralized”.

  45. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

If it weren’t for the *recapture* penalty I would completely keep Richards.

  46. Islanders new *sweaters* are going to be plaid and visors are going to be replaced with *thick* *rimmed* glasses.

  47. And I just made fun of myself because I own a lot of plaid and I wear pretty thick rimmed glasses.

  48. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Agreed. The Stadium uniforms for the Islandorks were clearly better than their regulars and *leagues* better than those awful Knicks Inspired *Thirds* that they wear.

  49. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Wicky is the *worst* guys. Don’t give him your *phone* number. He will just demean you relentlessly.

  50. Marc Staal is a *father*. Did you know the baby has two uncles who also play in the NHL? They both play for Carolina. I heard a rumor the baby is looking to buy a house in Carolina. Does this mean Marc is *as good as gone*? We should trade him now just to get something for him.

  51. E2: Sather offers baby 7 year 49 million dollar contract. Trade of Callahan for the afterbirth imminent..

  52. If you offered to *pay me* the equivalent of what a trip to the Olympics would cost me, I would not go. This looks like a real *pending disaster*.

  53. Last week I was all “I wouldn’t bring my family to the Olympics. It’s just safer that way.”

Now I basically think that you would have to be an absolute moron to bring them there.

Even though the only thing connecting me with Russia is my fluent Russian and my Russian accent when I speak English, I really wish my wife doesn’t see this latest news. Although, I’m not surprised. Oh yea, that’s pretty appalling as well.

My buddy Ilya actually moved back to Moscow and has been protesting. It’s kind of insane.

  61. Nine months ago today, the Rangers lost Game Two to go 2-0 down to the Capitals in the playoffs. Inappropriate behaviour in the circumstances by a guy wearing a letter, even if he was injured, if you ask me.

I remember the *first* time I got my hair long enough to *bang*. That was a glorious *summer*. I used to like to do the *bang* to knee *drop* That was an *epic* move

  77. the more I think about, I would not even sign Cally to the 5 year deal. he has been in the league 8 years now, and has never really established that he is a top 6 player. he is a very good top 9 player, but he is asking top 6 money. Cally is not all of a sudden become a consistent 30 goal guy. you pay guys with still more upside big money. I think we have seen Cally’s upside already.

  78. Must be a 34-year old journeyman out there we can dump Cally off for and save a few bucks for the trouble, right Slats? It is amazing how, every year, this man wastes money on FA’s then tries to recoup for his stupidity by chiseling Ranger organizational stalwarts. He has devolved into a robotic, knee-jerk zombie.

  79. I think you look to trade Cally for someone who can help this team this year, and in future years. if you can’t get that you keep him, and let him walk after the season. an own rental if you will.

  80. And of course, if we lose Cally that is the cost for re-singing Richards.

Way to go Slats!!! We knew you were myopic beyond “What’s for lunch, every day of your life?”

  81. I always loved the slow bang. The eyes closed I look like I’m really drunk but I’m not bang.

  82. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

That’s a quality one, *Booby* I might break it out tonight. Even though my hair is only down to my *eyes*

  83. If you can get a Kadri for Callahan, you probably do it.

If you can get a Stewart for Callahan, you say “of course I could get a Stewart for Callahan, but why the hell would I want to???”

In either situation, I make tears.

  84. not sure why most of you hate Stewart. I would take him before I took Kadri. Stewart would fit the Rangers very well.

  85. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I love Nazem Kadri. He would allow us to have insane depth at Center.

    Kadri > Stewart

  86. what would make you sadder, Mr D. Cally being traded, or Cally walking away after season ends?

  87. Kadri is younger, cheaper, under control longer and has 1st line upside. We know what Stewart is and its nothing to lose your mind over.

  88. and then what Manny? Stepan, Richards, Brassard, Kadri, Moore. Stewart makes a lot more sense, and is a much better fit.

  89. All depends on the return, Bull Dog. Walking away after this year’s playoffs falls between a Kadri-ish return and Stewart-ish return.

  90. also, if you are dealing Cally now, you want him out of the conference. no reason to help somebody in the East make a run.

  91. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Stewart has been *demoted* to the 4th line and is currently playing *5 Minutes* a game. He is averaging under *13 Minutes* for the season. That’s not good.

  92. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Would the Maple Leafs be interested in Callahan? How can they even have the room to sign him?

  93. Best I can count, it would be 3 more years of Kadri versus 1 more of Stewart. That takes it from a no-brainer to a super-duper-no-brainer.

  94. _also, if you are dealing Cally now, you want him out of the conference. no reason to help somebody in the East make a run._

I know this is a rule, but I *hate* this rule. How about believe you’re smart enough to win the trade and your longer term asset will make the other team loathe the rental they bought from you? Best trade is best trade, no?

  95. Kadri is miles better than Stewart and an RFA after next season with a $2.9M AAV. Even if he is resigned at $5M AAV after that, it’s better than paying Stastny $7.5M AAV.

Richards would move to the wing this year and out the door next year. Having Kadri would be one more tick in the “Buy out Richards” column for Sather.

  96. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I’m not worried about where he ends up. Seriously. If we get better we should be able to beat anywhere in the East!

  97. yes and no Mr D. yes you want the best possible trade regardless of conference. but how bad would it look if you dealt Cally to Columbus, and they knock you out of the playoffs. you can’t take that chance.

  98. (I should add that no part of me thinks Toronto would actually do that whereas I think St. Louis would jump as fast as possible even without an extension. Kadri was an example of “good, upside, young and controlled and may on the outs with his team”.)

  99. I am also now of the belief that Cally’s demands are what they are, because he wants to leave.

  100. _yes and no Mr D. yes you want the best possible trade regardless of conference. but how bad would it look if you dealt Cally to Columbus, and they knock you out of the playoffs. you can’t take that chance._

Honestly, I don’t care. If we’re better positioned later on I don’t care. I might even prefer it because I’d far rather see Callahan and the old Rangers advance than Boston or Philadelphia.

  101. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

St. Louis has a chance to win this year. A *very* good one. Toronto has issues. Many of them.

  102. Kreider – Stepan – Nash
    Richards – Kadri – Hagelin
    Pouliot – Brassard – MZA
    Boyle – Moore – Dorsett

Next year, you replace Richards with Moulson or equivalent.

  103. _I am also now of the belief that Cally’s demands are what they are, because he wants to leave._

So if the Rangers agreed, he wouldn’t sign?

  104. It would be such a weird feeling if Cally for Dubi actually happened. That’s a lot to *process*.

  105. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

*Booby* just read a review of last night’s *Amon Amarth* show and it appears that *Enslaved* played *6* songs. By their length that’s about 40-45 minutes of *Metal*. Not as much as I was *hoping* for but definitely something to be *happy* about.

  106. as big a Dubi fan as I am, I do not want him back. that ship has sailed. Brooks reported the Rangers interest was in Atkinson.

  107. Kadri is only 23 and has two 40+ point seasons (including lockout-shortened season). I don’t care if he was on the Devils.

And yes, this is all fantasy land.

  108. Maybe everyone from Amon Amarth will get *injured* before the show, thus increasing the *awesomeness* for *you*.

  109. Gravy, you took Hagelin, and Richards and moved them off there position’s to fit Kadri. we have already seen the Richards can’t play the wing.

  110. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I mean *we* already have *Zuccarello* (All *praise* the Hobbit Wizard for *HE* is Lord of the *Rink*). What team wants *two* players measuring *under* 5’7″ on their team!?

  111. dude also has 17 goals this year, and as important, he was a teammate of Kreider at BC.

  112. He scored a boatload of points, and it’s not like he’s a good defensive center. It took a lot of defensive responsibility away from him, so if he continues to score, it’s a net benefit to the team.

  113. How much would you pay, if you are an explosive winger, to have #!9 ‘checking’ you all night?

  114. I thought the rule was that if the Rangers trade players to a Western Conference team, that team ends up in the Eastern Conference within two years anyway?

  115. Let’s face it, the Rangers will get a player the other team either wants to “dump”, or we will get draft picks.

Cally will be treated as a rental, for a cup run only. The only place he really fits is St. Louis.

The Kings NEED scoring, so they won’t be knocking on Cally’s door.
Vancouver maybe, Torts could have his hard working Captain that road him out of town back. I’m thinking not.

Vanek will be the #1 Rental for scoring. The guy is a beast.

  116. Maloney’s advice to Shattenkirk, ‘Do something to make them know you’re out there every shift.’ Same advice as old man Dorsett gave his kid. Seems to have worked.

  117. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Cam Atkinson would be a giant leap in the wrong direction as well as potentially signalling the end of the Hobbit Wizard.

  118. SeeeDubbb says Sign Cally on

Unless Cally goes in a package, your not getting any body that can help the team. Instant down grade.

    Book it.

  119. It would be really helpful, numbers wise, if you guys all watched the videos. Or at least clicked on it with the sound off until after the commercial is over … The better our numbers, the more time they let me spend on your NYR.

Also wanted to ask you guys, do you like the post-game/post-practice audio things? If you do, even if some of you do, I’ll keep doing it. Just want to know that I’m not completely wasting my time. Thanks. — The MGMT.

  120. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Callahan is being moved at his lowest value. He’s essentially a rental. Therefore, the team isn’t getting much back, and if anything, they are getting a rental. If the Sabres are honestly going to *pay* him that money then, maybe Moulson, depending on his Current IR situation. At least you’re getting a rental you can use with the ability to attempt to sign him longer.

Maybe I would be OK getting Pacioretty?

The problem is, in my opinion of course, that Callahan is your grittiest and toughest Forward. If you move him for Atkinson you’re getting a 5’7″ Shrimp that is scoring a bunch this season but has never done so in the past. Thus, the team would be getting smaller and softer. That’s *bad* (in my opinion of course).

If *Stewart* is the best you can get then…. I don’t know. Wow. He’s a step in the direction of bigger and tougher but he’s hardly an improvement over the guy he’s replacing. He’s also currently a 4th line player makeinv *over* $4M

  121. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I listen to the audio after about 40% of the game. I watch the video’s maybe 30% of the time.

  122. Prediction: If we do trade Callahan, Devils fans will hate it. We’ll be all sad for losing Cally but I bet some GM out there would overpay. Like how some Devils fans were sad about Clarkson but we were like “oh, damn, I was hoping they’d be dumb enough to give him a huge deal”. But then they signed Clowe anyway.

  123. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Maybe you would get more hits on those videos if you get a buxom blonde to do them? Maybe you can do a voice over?

  124. Manny

I think you have to trade Callahan regardless as you cannot let a tradeable asset walk away for nothing and if that means “ruining chemistry” which is so overrated its ridiculous, then so be it.

The Rangers farm system is really bad right now. If we can get a top prospect and a good young established player then I’d rather have that than just the cap space to waste on someone else.

  125. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I can make a few calls. You might want to ask ORR if he knows anybody. That’s more _his_ area of expertise.

  126. Carp – well done.(Golf clap in the backround) Who held the camera for you? Does he have Parkinson’s :) I kid, I kid.

Honestly the post game audio, is hard to listen to. And Jim has the video on Blueshirts, with the same conversation. Only stating this because you wanted feed back.

  127. Always watch the video, less often the post game audio because it’s rare that anything interesting is said, except sometimes for AV. That said, all boneheads should click on the video to keep Carp duly assigned to us!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Manny if Buffalo is willing to sign him, won’t they be looking to dump salary?

Stafford looked good last night. I would rather have a healthy Stafford than a Stewart. IF it’s the same money.

    Just throwing that out there.

  129. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

It’s just my *opinion*, Bull Dog. I don’t claim to know anything or have any expertise. Just go with my gut.

  130. He’s not a rental if the trade is contingent on a contract. That’s bad economics on the acquiring team’s side, but GMs show all the time they aren’t economists.

  131. Nicky Fotiu, on 98.7 says that it distresses him to see all the pucks on the ice after warmups. Said he would throw every one to the blue seats! Nicky!

  132. Rob in Beantown on

Maybe you could get the Bay Ridge Honda girl to do the videos? I guarantee more viewers then!

  133. Rob in Beantown on

Truthfully I don’t usually watch the videos or listen to the audio, but it’s not anything personal. I don’t usually like video or audio coverage on any websites — too impatient for them. I much prefer written content.

But since you asked and if it helps I’ll start running the videos.
