It’s Go Time! … Super Bowl XLVIII edition

524

Welcome to the annual Rangers Report Super Bowl party — the best place to watch the game (also the cheapest). The chicken wings, little hot dogs in blankets, and beers are in the back. Help yourself.

Just so you know, we’ve nailed the exact final score for, like, four or five years in a row. So here goes. But if you don’t want to know the final score, stop reading right here.

Otherwise, it’s undoubtedly, without question, going to be Seattle 43, Denver 8. Book it.

  2. shouldn’t that technically be a successful challenge and no timeout, since Carroll challenged the spot, and the spot did indeed turn out to be incorrect, even if it wasn’t enough for a first down?

  3. Maserati hands little kid a Scott Fitzgerald, E A Poe script and expects you to buy a vehicle.

  4. Spots are almost always incorrect if we talk a foot or so. Almost every one could be sucessfully challenged on that basis. Get your point, though.

  5. Someone is going to successfully sue these auto makers one of these days for promoting reckless driving. Book it.

Agree Coos, I thought that was really pretty special. I am admittedly a sap when it comes to anthems though.

  10. I bet a game once where I was leading 30-0 at halftime, and getting points; went to bed at the half and woke up to find I’d lost. AND, lost it on an intentional safety by my team and a free kick which turned out to be disasterous!

If Hank can make some big saves, rangers can some quick goals, we are right back in this game…

  31. While I am looking rather stupid right now, I am not suffering too much, given that I am a lifetime fan of “DeSean & Co.” Maybe when we lost to New Orleans and didn’t get to the round with Seattle we actually knew something and came out ahead?

I went through the downer of my team getting blown out in SB 15, and getting cheated out of another one by Belichick and Brady, and THOSE two debacles were a bummer! This, believe me, I can handle. “Where have you gone Matt Dodge, when I need you?” lol.

  32. Did these guys know the the “Legion of Doom” was already taken and thusly named it a different legion?

  33. Any given time Peyton is 75 percent of the Broncos neither he nor the team left Denver today and theyn ever played a defense this damn good Congrats to a great Seahawk organization. Carp what’s the probability of Callahan being traded by Friday Friday

  34. I’d say slim chance it happens by Friday. Was told today that, while the Rangers want to get it resolved by Friday, they haven’t actually set a deadline … because it would be dumb to take a bad deal, and a good deal is going to require Callahan agreeing to a new contract with a new team first.

  35. I’m having a hard time with the possibility of losing cally, I really am-last time we let a guy walk over the bucks was prust, and how did that work out? And Richards is still around. . .

  36. “Otherwise, it’s undoubtedly, without question, going to be Seattle 43, Denver 8.”

  38. We will be in serious cap trouble if Sather and Callahan come to an agreement at around 6 mil per.

McDonagh or Girardi are the clear choices for captain, but since Girardi’s contract is up, there is no way they give him the C before he re-signs. Girardi and Staal are getting pricy, I think Staal should get moved especially with his health issues.

I am warming up to Chris Stewart for Callahan, would be great if they throw in a 2nd rounder or a good goalie prospect. Stewart would fit nicely, we really need some true power forwards like him, he is basically Ryane Clowe, but younger and without health problems.

  39. “I’d say slim chance it happens by Friday. Was told today that, while the Rangers want to get it resolved by Friday, they haven’t actually set a deadline … because it would be dumb to take a bad deal, and a good deal is going to require Callahan agreeing to a new contract with a new team first.”

if he doesn’t get traded by Friday, let’s hope he and Stepan raise their trade value in the Olympics with their play and don’t get injured.

  40. Slats did not get a second rounder thrown in when he traded the 23-year old for the 29-year old.

  41. Glad I didn’t sit through that yawner of an imitation of a football game, even if I did get a chance to leave my snow cave due to high water. More concerned about the impending loss of Callahan. Hope he sees the light, if he really wants to be a Ranger. Another chink in team chemistry if he leaves. They do play better when he’s in the lineup. I don’t know why everyone assumes Staal would end up in NC…he’s a certified all star and makes a big difference to this team when he plays healthy and up to his abilities.

  42. OH, and I think Callahan realizes he has an outside chance to win a SC with this team, and he does not have a NTC. I think he wants to see what he can get from Sather, and he’s a tough, hard-nosed competitor. Will be interesting to see how it plays out…and will have an impact on the rest of the season/playoffs.

  43. Rob in Beantown on

I just gashed my hand open on some broken glass while taking out my garbage. I wrapped it in long band aids but it’s still bleeding a lot. Would you say that’s a *metal factor* of at least *7*?

  44. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

Can I get a *picture* Rob? That will help me judge.

For starters, since you used a *non Generic brand* Band-Aid, I have to knock you down to a *5*.

The most *Metal* thing to do would be *LET IT BLEED*

  45. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

The *Buffalo Sabres* have apparently offered to *match* Callahans’ 7-Year, $42M demand.

Who saw that coming aside from *everyone* ?

  46. Rob in Beantown on

Does that tweet by Liam mean Gift of Gaborik’s fundraiser was successful? That’s *awesome* if it’s true

  47. Rob in Beantown on

Why would the *hopeless* Sabres trade for Callahan during the season and give up assets when they can just sign him over the summer?

  48. Rob in Beantown on

Why would Callahan agree to the sign and trade to go from a hopeful team to a hopeless one, when presumably the sea offer will be available during the offseason?

  49. Don’t think he will see summer as a UFA, he is not the rental type player yet, and wants a long term deal. What does it matter if a team is a contender or not, with that asking price he can’t be picky.
Plus, can’t see a contender meeting Sather’s trade request , he won’t give away Cally

  50. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

That’s what the Sabres said. They *will not* trade for him but they will *meet* his price tag.

  51. Rob in Beantown on

I guess that just means Sather *must trade him* because he is *good as gone* over the summer.

  52. Good late morning all! Is it safe to come out that the Super Cup hoopla is over? I neglected yesterday to wish a very happy 26th birthday to Anthony from AZ….

This Cally stuff is making me very thirsty

  53. Morning fellas.

    What did I miss?

Yesterday game was a bore, until the end of the 1’st quarter, and I notice my 8-0 was the winner on our Super Bowl Board :)

    Happy, Happy, Happy

  54. So does this mean Buffalo circumvented the trade negotiations or that Sather effectively waived all tampering protection?

  55. Gravy vs Sioux this week!

Gravy what’s the side be this week?

A 6 pack of Labatt’s Hockey Jersey cans???? And NO you can’t drink them first :)

  56. So Captain Cally is going to be a Baby Buffalo?

This will hurt what we get for him, right?

Basically we will swap rentals, or get Stewart from the Blues with an extra 4M year.

  57. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

It sounds like we won’t get anything for him under those circumstances, Sioux. It sounds like the *Sabres* refuse to trade for him but will sign him as a UFA.

Whether they will or will not, it certainly is a stick in the spokes of the Rangers negotiating with him. Thanks, Buffalo!

  58. Oh, that’s nothing, really. Or atleast nothing new. If he’s dead set on Buffalo no matter what, we’re screwed and we already knew it. If he’s just looking for the price, an extension would be a part of the trade and compensation. So we’re where we were on Friday.

  59. Agreed, Sioux. There are places you couldn’t pay men enough to live and do my current job, tough to understand why guys making far more often don’t view it the same way.

  60. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

Vanek wants *money*. What kind of player says it’s their *Dream* to become a *Free Agent* ? Blech

  61. Vanek turned down the islanders offer. That trade made no sense. Islanders mortgaged there future for a rental. I don’t know how much Vanek thinks he can get but he isn’t worth what he will probably get. I stay away from him. Good thing the rangers have there own issues with the cap. This way sather doesn’t sign another bad contract.

  62. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

It is going to end up as a swap of *Moulson* for *Callahan*. A rental for a rental. Neither team gets better. And then we have to sign Moulson to an overpriced deal to be our 3rd line Winger.

  63. Tommy what if Vanek just wants to buy a house on a Lake in Mn, and live closer to his wifes family. When you’re making 5M+ a year, and chose where you want to live and raise your family.

I don’t blame him for wanting to play in MN. It really isn’t all that different from Cally. IF Vanek can get the same money, AND live where he wants to.

  64. I can’t tell if the Moulson/Vanek trade is a bad trade or not.

When you think aboot it, who gets you more at the deadline, Vanek or Moulson? I think teams are more willing to overpay to get a guy like Vanek on their team.

On the other hand, Moulson consistently put up 30+ goals a year there, and they burned that bridge by trading him. But who knows, maybe Snow knew he wouldn’t re-sign with them.

Either way, I’m happy. So who gives a fugg!?

  65. yea, I think Callahan for Stewart is better than Moulson for Callahan. Stewart will add grit and some scoring which the rangers need badly.

  66. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

If I had to take one I would definitely choose Moulson over Vanek.

    Tort hates *Weise*

  67. Orr, there’s a 1st and a future 2nd in the Vanek deal too. That’s what made it sooooooo gross for the Islanders.

  68. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

*Callahan* for *Stewart* makes absolutely *NO* sense to me. We are trading our *CAPTAIN* for a player that was recently *demoted* to the *4th* line and reduced to 5-6 minutes per game. In return for our *Captain* we get a guy that we *hope* the change of scenery does him well.

    *No* thanks

  69. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

    *Sully* hates *Weise* !!!

Also, I know you guys fail to see the inconsistency of a guy like *Brassard* so maybe you would *love* an inconsistent guy like *Stewart* I don’t want two Caspers on my team.

  70. I think the nucks made that deal for a defensemen because they lost at least 1 defensemen to injury recently.

  71. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

One Ring to rule them all, One ring to find them; One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

  72. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

@67sound Just a reminder, Habs drafted/signed Diaz, McDonagh, Grabbo, Streit, Higgins, Hainsey, Beauchemin, Robidas and have garbage to show for it.

  73. Sioux, you have to factor in this year’s playoffs. We’re a better team with Callahan than we are with Stewart.

  74. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

Has *MSG* decided to make an episode of _Beginnings_ yet for Coach Klein?

  75. Doodie Machetto on

Imagine my surprise at seeing Paul Allen receive the Lombardi Trophy last night. He should have no trouble getting reservations at Dorsia now.

  76. Doodie Machetto on

    Carp,

Let’s say when Vigneault got here, there was no captain, and he was picking his captain right now (forget contract situations). Does he still pick Callahan or does he go with someone else? If so, who? Just trying to get a feel for who will be captain once Callahan is gone.

  77. The Market’s tanking into free fall, my driveway’s covered again, another mortgage payment’s due, and I’m worried about whether Cally will get 5 years or 7. Riddle me that.

  78. The coach, IMO, in addition to everything else he has to do, doesn’t want to hear gripes piecemeal. He wants a Captain with a level head who can handle most things in the locker room via his own leadership. He also wants a guy who buys into his vision and exemplifies it. That’s a big reason management picks the ‘C’ and not the players. AV might have different thoughts than Torts in the choice, but in this case, probably not.

  79. Although some think our D is shored up, I think Slats is still looking, but of course secondary to a large, effective forward. Seriously doubt Girardi goes anywhere.

  80. My snowblower clogs at anything over 4 inches, Sioux. Very amateur. Not like Carp’s war surplus monster with headlights.

  81. Carp’s piece of equipment helped clear the Meuse-Argonne Forest of twelve foot snowbanks in 1918, preparing the way for the big allied push.

  82. IMO, Callahan’s the captain of this team, no matter what. I have no idea what AV might have thought if he had come into a captain-less situation, but it’s hard to imagine the C going to anyone else why he’s here.

as for if/when he’s gone, I’m going three Ds … Staal with the C, Girardi and McDonagh A’s. And eventually McDonagh C.

  83. Rob in Beantown on

Carp, do you think Nash will get an A “just because”? He wore the C in Columbus and he’s the highest paid skater. I think all those guys you mentioned are more deserving, but I think if management doesn’t give Nash a letter it will be perceived as a diss.

  84. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

How sad is it that we can’t think of a *Single* Forward who deserves a *letter*?

  85. Staal seems to me a bit taciturn and shy for that position. McD is coming out of his shell, but too early for him other than an ‘A’. An eventual ‘C’ for Staal might spur him and make him more inclined to stay here.

  86. Nash would have to get at least an ‘A’ politically. Ironic that #19, Tort’s large ‘A’ is reputedly the guy who had a heavy hand in getting him canned.

  87. Staal is the obvious choice, except they want to make sure he is planning to resign with NY. It isn’t an absolute thing. Nor it is a forgone conclusion that he wants to play in NC. But they need to be proactive with Stall, otherwise they’ll be trading their second captain in two years. On top of other issues.

For the record, I still believe Callahan stays.

  88. Doodie Machetto on

You think they give it to Staal with his impending UFA situation looming? I can’t believe they’d risk having three different captains in three different seasons.

  89. Maybe I’m way off base, but I would think Step might get consideration as well if he’s willing to go long term.

  90. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I’d give an A to dorsett

I wouldn’t mind the Stewart for cally deal (especially if they threw in polak) or some other decent player. We need to be bigger.

I really am starting to warm up to McGinn from Colorado. Like the way he plays…a lot.

  91. Ryan Callahan will stay. Thus far, the negotiation has been through news outlets. Once Cally’s agents and Slats sit down to seriously discuss matters, they will come to an agreement.

  92. Cally’s agent would much prefer a percentage of 42 million rather than 30. Cally, however, will make the ultimate decision.

  93. “Ryan Callahan will stay. Thus far, the negotiation has been through news outlets. Once Cally’s agents and Slats sit down to seriously discuss matters, they will come to an agreement.”

I hope not, Sather just grossly overpaid Lundqvist so he will likely overpay for Callahan, and Callahan is damaged goods.

  94. Stranger Nation on

This team has a lack of veteran leadership on the forward lines – Nash and Richards are not Capt materials IMHO. The whole notion of a ‘captain’ is a little dated.

Off the ice, they are the conduit for the coaching staff. On the ice, they get to converse with the zebras.

    Anything else?

  95. ‘All of my life
    I’ve been a-waitin’
    Tonight there’ll be no…hesitatin’
Oh boy, when you’re with me
Oh boy, the world can see
That you, were meant, for me.’

  96. Callahan is not even injury prone. He has played in 87% of the Rangers games the past 3 seasons. His play, though, has deteriorated a bit.

  97. On the flipside, Richards has only missed 2 regular season games over that time frame. Sooo … maybe we can accept that Callahan’s style, while not conducive to playing all 82, is more valuable than others that are?

  98. Callahan’s unreasonable demands are a stain on his leadership. Sure you want to get paid, but this is a team sport with a salary cap, be reasonable at least. You aren’t even that good, and you are not having a great season in your contract year and you have never performed much in the playoffs.

  99. “Callahan is not even injury prone. He has played in 87% of the Rangers games the past 3 seasons. His play, though, has deteriorated a bit.”

that is because he loves playing with injuries instead of taking some time off to heal properly.

  100. yeah, it’s actually 82 percent of the games the last 3+ years … and you posted the exact same thing under a different name in the last few days. So you’re out.

  101. Mark Messier, greatest leader of all-time, several times had long contract squabbles. Separated business from hockey.

  102. anyone thinking that this could be a part of what happened last spring with torts?

we’ll never know the crybabies that went to sather regarding tortorella but personally i never thought it could have been callahan. perhaps since another faciton of the locker room may have won out and gotten rid of tortorella, maybe the next step here to ‘clean the slate’ is get rid of his captain too.

i personally think the 7 years/ $42 million is crazy for him and hope we at least get a decent pick or players back for him

  103. Interesting games tonight. Curious to see Colorado against NJ. Also, Columbus and Philadelphia are playing away against WC power houses. The Rangers know what it feels like. And the main event- Bufallo against Edmonton. War of the Titans.

  104. Callahan, I’ve heard, was a big part of the mutiny. I can’t print that in the blog post or in the paper without verification, but that is what I’ve heard. And a few others that were shocking. And that Lundqvist was far, far less responsible than originally thought.

  105. I don’t know, I think that guy had a point. My manager at work doesn’t collect a salary because he just wants to do what’s best for the company and the people who purchase our product. That’s a true leader!

  106. Gulp! I can easily imagine that Torts was not easy to talk to and probably offered “suck it up” and “just do your job” retorts, which might be enough for me, too, to get fed up with him.

  107. “And a few others that were shocking.”

oooh, give us some hints please, who was shocking? McDonagh? Nash?

  108. #19 surely didn’t like being Prucha’d. #62 was openly and verbally dissed. Power Play was badly handled. Torts mind-bogglingly humiliated and pointed at Gabby while praising Richie. Mishandled Kreider. On and on.

  109. thanks for sharing that carp… always have wondered that…

him being involved in it never made any sense and still doesn’t… tortorella’s system is what put him in the position to be asking for the type of money he’s asking for. also, it always seem to me that there was no bigger ryan callahan fan in the organization than tortorella.

i mean, just at what happened by bringing in AV’s system, all of a sudden, callahan is practically a third liner and he isn’t needed to lead the team in PP goals anymore

i don’t get the biting the hand that feeds you think but can’t say that i’m shocked.

  110. Carp, is this new (leaked) info or something you’ve known for a while but not wanted to toss out there?

  111. I think it might more to do with him being a captain at that moment, tf It’s hard to to represent the players when you see them being constantly barked at, and constantly being disparaged by your coach.

  112. ThisYearsModel on

CARP–Interesting info. I am surprised, as I saw cally as a Torts supporter. Recall his statement after the Avery tweet? I was doner with Torts the season where we lost the playoffs in the shootout in Philadelphia. When he had Prust and Jody Shelly getting all the ice time while sitting Gaborik…….I knew we would never win the cup with him as coach and I began to wonder how Tampa bat EVER did. TB was loaded with talent, enough to overcome Torts’ idiotic approach. I am not a Sather supporter, but he did the right thing in whacking Torts.

  113. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

Yea – focus on that time that Tortarella was making the team grow rather than the time they got to the *ECF*

  114. i don’t know ilb… if chris drury is the captain when carl hagelin is getting ripped apart by tortorella, chris drury would say, ‘i’m not going to let carl hagelin getting verbally abused ruin my veteran’s day weekend’ and go make pizza in connecticut

    :)

  115. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

So we should be *really* ready to *dominate* the Avalanche since we have been *scouting* them relentlessly, right?

  116. “CARP—Interesting info. I am surprised, as I saw cally as a Torts supporter. Recall his statement after the Avery tweet? Teams that Tampa faced in the playoffs that year also weren’t that great.

  117. seriously though, i thought torts was awful for a lot of stuff, the treatment of gaborik near the top of the list, but the reality of the situation is he took a very flawed group to the edge of a stanley cup final due to a system he put in place that played perfectly played to their strengths.

to think that some of these guys, i’m thinking of the callahans and girardis who really benefited from that system would possibly turn around and try to get rid of him is gross and as i believe many of us said at the time, it feels a little dirty to be rooting for anyone who was involved in any kind of ‘coach killing’

all of that said, i’m getting more into AV’s system and we’re starting to see the results of it and it may happen that callahan doesn’t really fit into that system, certainly not at 7 years for $42 million. i like him as a player and think he’s been great, but if he doesn’t fit then we might as well get something for him before he walks off to buffalo

  118. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

As I have said, in the battle of *Coach* versus *player* I side with the coach 99/100 *times*

  119. Eh. Coach killing doesn’t bother me all that much, especially when it comes in response to the coach’s incessant player killing.

(This excepts coach killing a guy who got you a massive deal and gave you leash twice as long as anyone else. That’s always gross.)

  120. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

I said 99/100. Obviously there could be a situation involving *abuse* but most of the time, in *Professional* sports it’s a question of ego and effort and I have to side with the *coach*. This is for all *professional* sports.

  121. Love the Captain’s on-ice attitude, off-ice demeanor, but 7 years, 42 mil won’t cut it here.

  122. “but the reality of the situation is he took a very flawed group to the edge of a stanley cup final due to a system he put in place that played perfectly played to their strengths.”

Why was the group flawed? based on what? The system and coach was flawed, the group was no more flawed than any other team. That is why they lost to very flawed team which had a smarter coach with better system. And it was embarrassing that it took them 7 games to beat 2 other very flawed teams with 2 rookie coaches.

  123. _Love the Captain’s on-ice attitude, off-ice demeanor, but 7 years, 42 mil won’t cut it here._

I bet it would still be top 2-3 of our 6+ year deals over the last decade.

While Torts could be a handful and NOT a great communicator, having Sully as his second in command made a bad situation worse.

Helpful to have an assistant coach to address player issues and provide some counsel. Sully seems like a hot head jerk who liked to push buttons as much, if not more so, than Torts.

Did anyone see the footage of him in locker room coaching Nucks a couple of days ago? what a nut job – that and the PP sucked

  126. Rob in Beantown on

Whoa that’s weird. I’ve never seen anything like that happen before! Technology is amazing.

  127. Stranger Nation on

Re Cally talking to Mngt about the coach – last I checked, mngt signs the checks.

If he was asked about morale and performance with regards to the coach, he owes an honest answer.

  128. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

Yea. Get rid of our *Captain* so we can overpay some *aging* soft type *Star* !!!

  129. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

I really hope we get rid of *Callahan* so we can *KEEP* Richards, give him the *C* and let him center our top line. Then we can sign *Stastny* to Center the Second line!

While we’re at it we can trade *Stepan* because he’s garbage (being so talented, aware defensively, young and cheap) and throw a bunch of money at *Vanek* (who is horrible) and maybe even have enough to go after *Erat* (who is worse)

  130. Regardless what the reason was…Bad taste in the mouth lingers. Didn’t like it then. Do not like it now. And I understand that Torts’ approach grew old on this team. Still a big fan of his.

  131. SeeeDubbb says Sign Cally on

I know, we’ll trade the Captain for some one else’s dross because we “got to get something ” if he doesn’t sign.

Then, I like this part, we’ll pay some other thirty year old that same money, which I’m sure will work out swimmingly.

  132. Vanek would fit really well with Nash and Richards. POINTS POINTS POINTS POINTS POINTS POINTS POINTS!!!!!!!

  133. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

    Atta boy, ilb.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ME *PUKING* THE DOCTOR

    blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

  134. Is it fair to really like Torts as a fan and understand why players would really hate Torts as a boss?

  135. Manny-o-War, King of Metal on

It’s going to happen, ilb. It’s *Sather* we are talking about. He wants the team to go in a new direction, he loves *retreads* and he really, really loves aging veterans.

    Stastny = Richards 2.0

And if we clear Callahan’s well deserved salary then we can have Richards & Richards 2.0 on the same team. Maybe even the same line!

  136. watch for the Wild to end up with Cally. they have a need for him, and a good young player in Charlie Coyle to offer up.

  137. would you do a deal involving Bryan Bickel? signed for 3 more after this one. only 27. having a tough year, but usually a good player.

  138. I said this yesterday but Callahan’s $6m number isn’t ridiculous. His actual salary is $4.8m this year and I tend to think players look at their paycheck vs their cap hit. You can’t blame him for thinking he deserve’s a raise equal to the increase in the cap, ~10%, which gets you to $5.3m. Add that his production is in fact up since his last contract and he has leverage….$6m isn’t unreasonable.

My bet is that nothing happens pre-Olympics, Sather will let him shine there playing with the best players and probably increase his rental value. Sather’s final offer will range somewhere in between the two camps with the pendulum closer to Callahan – if he won’t sign at that point it’s probably just a good business decision to trade him for something.

  139. Bob Dylan shilling for a car company that the taxpayers bailed out and which is now owned by an Italian company. Sad day.

  140. so Carp was right on this yesterday. he said Cally was looking for more than 6 mill, and it is now being reported he is asking for 6.85 mill.

  141. ilb,
I was just looking at possible landing places for Cally if he were to be moved. Chicago is struggling right now, as is Bickel. thought it might be a fit.

  142. “would you do a deal involving Bryan Bickel? signed for 3 more after this one. only 27. having a tough year, but usually a good player.”

    sure for Boyle

  143. Hey Carp, maybe

    A. Cally and the missus just want to move back home to Buffalo
    B. Cally would like his PP time back, although I think his line is not really a third line but closer to a second.
    C. Both of the above, and maybe Cally really doesn’t want to stay here? I’d offer up that he was against Torts’ firing but Torts spouted off all summer about not hearing from any of the players.

  144. Jeff in South Dakota on

Still hung over from yesterdays spanking of the Denver Ponies and I didn’t drink — what did I miss? And yes I said hung.

  145. ORR – Cally is the captain of the team. I would not call his giving his input to the GM, as regards his and others disconnect with the coach “Crying to the GM.” There has to be some communication from the top with the players – unless you want the GM to smoke his stoogies in the locker room before and after the games.

  146. _Callahan, I’ve heard, was a big part of the mutiny. I can’t print that in the blog post or in the paper without verification, but that is what I’ve heard. And a few others that were shocking. And that Lundqvist was far, far less responsible than originally thought._

Carp – IF this is true, How do you not lose some respect for Callahan?

I’m was NEVER a fan of – the tail waging the Dog.

  147. bull dog line –

As per your good question as to who are the retreads on this team (?), I nominate the G.M. Any G.M. who cannot move some of the journeyman sludge on this parent club roster, starting with Stralman and D. Moore, and on most nights, Pouliot, to get serviceable and ready kids funneled into the lineup, starting with Kristo, Allen, and Miller, is the worst of the worst where NHL G.M. retreads are concerned.

No team, in or out of contention in this league should have career downside “retreads” cluttering its parent club roster.

  148. I highly, highly doubt Cally complained about Torts. That seems like a very fishy story, Carp. Of course, I want to believe you but seems like what you may have been told is not truthful.

  149. I’m a Cally fan, but to demand 6M for 7 years, you would think he was a 60-70 pt player. Right?

His best year is 54 points.

But Buffalo is willing to pay that, no one can blame him for taking the hometown “discount”.

    $12M > Rangers/Captain/Chance for the Cup.

  150. Now, if something Cally said something to Sather that unintentionally led to Torts’ dismissal, that’s another matter. I just think Ryan had too much respect for Torts, unless there was some sort of falling out that we are unaware of.

  151. Finally someone “in the know” mentions something about Callahan and Tortorella. No one else found it just a bit surprising that Callahan and Tortorella had 0 contact after he got fired? Not surprised one bit that Callahan was involved, and I bet quite heavily involved. Also how about him now asking closer to 7 million for 7 years. El Capitan.

  152. Callahan wants more than Datsyuk, Kane, Toews, Bergeron, Neal, Zetterberg, the Sedins and Tavares (best contract in NHL?) are making.

  153. “No one else found it just a bit surprising that Callahan and Tortorella had 0 contact after he got fired?”

How would we even know this?

  154. Honestly I never thought Callahan is a true leader or a captain material he just seems a bit snobby and too full of himself.

And Tortorella was never a headcoach material, assistant yes, but not head.

  155. _And Tortorella was never a headcoach material, assistant yes, but not head._

    QQQ

careful now! That kinda talk can get you banned here! ;)

  156. Even Prust, who was ‘Torts guy’ didn’t want to stay and play for the coach… don’t blame Callahan for throwing Torts under the bus… he (Cally) wasn’t the only one who got sick of Torts.

  157. Say what you want about Callahan’s contract demands, which are silly until he gets them … but to say he’s not captain material? really?

  158. Oh boy do I love when people get mad at a player for not taking a discount. So, so great and smart.

  159. Torts had an acerbic mouth and it would not at all surprise me that his denigrating routine carried over once too often to Slats, who was not about to accept any more of it. Pure speculation, but palpably plausible.

  160. Meanwhile, Brandon Dubinsky has 12 goals and 36 points, which would put him in top three in all categories on this team right now…and he has played 6 games less than our top 3 scorers.

    just sayin’…

  161. Has nothing to do with taking a discount. Got everything to do with “lets be real.” You’re a 3rd liner that misses a number of games every single year whose body will inevitably break down sooner than lets say, a Datsyuk, a Sedin, a Kane. At some point a line has to be drawn.

  162. Torts did his share of publicly denigrating Dubinsky also, when he was here, if my memory serves.

  163. coos

your memory serves you correct. dubi took plenty of abuse from the coach and from the retarded fanbase as well.

  164. Carp, for me, then, that’s fine. Let them. He is not even close to be worth paying nearly 7 million a year for 7 years. Those teams willing to pay him that much will be non-playoff teams. The obvious choice will be the Sabres. If he really wants to play for his hometown team and never play in the playoffs then by all means. Edmonton will probably try to get him. What good NHL team would be able to afford him without losing one of their actual stars in the offseason?

  165. Agree, Lev. That’s why he’s not going to be a Ranger, IMO. I think they would pay him $6M, which is also too much, but over five years. Not seven.

and the fact that most of the good teams will be up against the cap, he might have to be traded unsigned, for picks/prospects, as a rental and then go get his money July 1. That’s not a good deal for the NYR, IMO, but they have to get something for him. Unless they decide they need him to have a chance this year, and then let him walk for zilch.

Why knows what the GM for life thinks?

  166. Lev

Agree 100%. Callahan has been a great Ranger, but in a salary cap world you can’t afford to pay an injury prone low 20s goal scorer that much per season and for that many years, just because of his personality.

The Rangers have a terrible farm system right now and if Callahan refuses to sign a reasonable contract, then trade him for good young players and move on.

  167. Of course, the other hand says, will this GM go and get the right players/prospects if there’s a trade to be made, or will he wisely use the draft pick(s) he gets?

  168. Carp

I trust Sather 100% when it comes to making trades. Outside of the Korpikoski for Lisin mistake, Sather has won every one he’s made in the last decade, no?

  169. “The Rangers have a terrible farm system right now and if Callahan refuses to sign a reasonable contract, then trade him for good young players and move on.”

the only things terrible about our farm system are coaching and goaltending.

  170. “I trust Sather 100% when it comes to making trades. Outside of the Korpikoski for Lisin mistake, Sather has won every one he’s made in the last decade, no?”

no, he did not win every one.

  171. If you don’t think Callahan is worth the money, that’s fine, but you can’t say he’s wrong for asking for an amount _he will get_.

  172. Sather is a really good trader. He’s as good at trades as he is bad at signing other teams’ UFAs.

  173. “Big part of the mutiny” could also be interpreted as all the players complaining to their captain and he, responsibly, bringing their complaints to Sather.

    SIGN THE CAPTAIN!

On a side note, this is a really wonderful post about the Washington and Edmonton power plays: http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=6616

  174. Anyone who questions Ryan Callahan’s leadership skill is pretty clueless when it comes to a leader, not just in hockey, just in life. That said, his skill is not worth the 6mill-7mill over 6-7 years and its a damn shame its going to come down to moving him.

Coach killer? Perhaps..then again so was Messier. Then he won a cup.

  175. The most important question is how much can they get for Callahan? At the end of the day the Rangers are, IMO, the 3rd best team in the East and that has to be taken into consideration as well.

  176. _Outside of the Korpikoski for Lisin mistake, Sather has won every one he’s made in the last decade, no?_

    ummm…NO! Tyutin for Zherdev? Remember?

    Manny,
Who is this soft “aging” vet we are going to sign.

I honestly do not get your Stepan live at all, he exemplifies *NONE* of the traits of the other players you love…Bickel, prust, parros, Simmonds, e Kane…

  178. ThisYearsModel on

Anyone still think Sather won the Nash trade? As for Cally, if he was one of the players who threw Torts under the bus, my already high opinion of him has grown even higher. Torts tried to tell us that this was his team and their identity like he had nothing to do with it, then benched Gaborik because he did not block a shot. The Rangers were behind in must-win games and he is playing the meatheads instead of the scorers. I get the feeling that Cally will not be a Ranger next season. Hard to believe, but looks like there will be a lot of Callahan jerseys retired.

  179. Zherdev was our leading scorer that year so it’s hard to consider that a loss. We gave up Kalinin, Prucha and Dawes for Morris, all three of which were in the KHL within a calendar year. I’d say that’s a win.

A 2nd round pick for rental is not a loss considering the player we would have selected has a less than 50% of chance of putting the points both Clowe and Antropov did as Rangers.

  180. Nice link Carp.

Cally’s agent is cracked. If that’s true, I don’t blame Sather for shipping his 20 goal scorer out of town.

Too bad Cally didn’t take a page out of Browns book, and work his own deal. Oh well.

I still wish him all the best. The business side of this can really mess a good thing.

It would be nice to see him play for the Blues, before he signs his life away to play in the abyss.

  181. CCCP – How many Stanley Cup winning coaches, besides Torts, were not Head Coaching material? After thinking of Scotty Bowman and Toe Blake, I am rather lost.

  182. So what about this: what would everyone on this board say if Callahan played for St. Louis right now and in this upcoming offseason Sather gave him a $49 million 7 year deal? The only argument you can then make in supporting Sather paying that kind of money for him is that he is the team captain and the team chemistry is too valuable and we know exactly what we are getting with all the intangibles.

With that concept, is that Cally is worth more to the Rangers than to other teams and therefore should actually get a hometown bonus.

  183. _Zherdev was our leading scorer that year so it’s hard to consider that a loss_

How is losing your leading scorer cannot be considered as a loss?

    I am lost…

  184. wait.. i see what you meant, Oleo… sorry, long day..

but on the other hand, Tyutin is still playing in the NHL and Zherdev is not.

    Tyutin > Strawhlmun

  185. Thanks, Latona, and it was obvious at the time we should have kept him. He was our best shootout scorer.

  186. Stranger Nation on

Slatsko has a way to lay a stink bomb on a winning streak. AV must be scratching his head at this clown.

Re Cally – not worth the years or money reported, but love watching him play. Think the ‘captaincy’ part is overrated.

BTW – Russel Wilson is a great spokesperson for the NFL

  187. Callahan does have an ability to score some amazing goals.

Sather needs to decide on other soon to be UFAs before the deadline.

Pouliot should be re-signed for 2 years.

Carcillo should probably be re-signed for about 1 mil.

Dominic Moore and Boyle probably traded especially with great penalty killers like Powe and Fast down in Hartford.

Stralman and Girardi are a tough call I am guessing Stralman re-signs for about 2 mil, if not then trade him wouldn’t miss him too much as he has been not as physical as he used to be and not producing many points like I thought he would under AV.

Girardi is a tough call on one hand he is very good on the other hand not really and somewhat overrated, not to mention slow. If we can get a big return for him we should do it, if not then re-sign him for 5 to 5.5 mil.

  188. Callahan + Stralman + Moore for Stewart + Polak + Lapierre + prospect/draftpick that would make us a much tougher team to play against. Stralman had his best offensive season under Hitchcock. Lapierre had good success under AV. this would be an awesome trade for us.

  189. Carp, if you are connected to people that have Sather’s ear, maybe you could suggest this trade? If Blues really want Callahan I think they wouldn’t mind this trade. Moore could be “upgraded” to Boyle if they aren’t crazy about Moore.

  190. BTW I have this feeling that it is Brad Richards who is giving bad advice to players like Callahan to demand crazy contracts.
