It’s Go Time! … Blues at Rangers

[polldaddy poll=7739713 align="left"]
Game 53.blues
Blues at Rangers.

Are there really fewer than 30 games left after tonight?

Ya boys come off a terrible loss to the Islanders. The Blues come off an even worse loss to the Devils. Should be two angry teams tonight. How either team responds should tell a lot about the character of each. Or both.

The Rangers are 7-2-1 in their last 10, 11-4-1 in their last 15, and 6-2-1 in their last nine at home. The Blues have lost four of their last six following a 9-0-1 streak.

Defenseman Kevin Klein, acquired from Nashville for Michael Del Zotto on Wednesday, makes his Rangers debut, on the third pair with John Moore.

Henrik Lundqvist, who missed Tuesday’s game with the flu, starts in goal against Jaroslav Halak.  Otherwise, same lineup, which means Justin Falk is prucha’d.

New Rochelle’s Kevin Shattenkirk plays his first NHL game at Madison Square Garden: he played here twice in college, remembers being five when his Rangers won the Stanley Cup and his idol Brian Leetch won the Conn Smythe, played under coach Dave Maloney at Brunswich High in Greenwich, and has about 60 friends and family coming to the game.

About Author

  1. Richard Nixon's Head on

Oh, no? Well, listen here, missy. Computers may be twice as fast as they were in 1973, but the average voter is as drunk and stupid as ever. The only one who’s changed is me. I’ve become more bitter and, let’s face it, crazy over the years. And when I’m swept into office, I’ll sell our children’s organs to zoos for meat, and I’ll go into people’s houses at night and wreck up the place!

  2. When it’s all said and done, we’re going to regret throwing away those points against division rivals like the Icelanders and Debbies. Winning those games would give more leeway for games against top teams like tonight. Can’t stay and watch the whole game…maybe that’s a good thing. Or maybe my feelings are way off and we actually pull it off.

    Either way, let’s go Rangers!

  3. C’mon, Carp, it’s just innocent short for Richard. For example: BRich for his parents is just a Dick.

  4. OK, let’s start skating, Rangers! Looking forward to what the defense change will bring…looks like another night in the snow cave.

  5. Re: Shattenkirk – Kinda nice, in high school, to get personal attention and D coaching from Dave Maloney, wot?

  6. ThisYearsModel on

Go Time! Methinks this one could be ugly. STL is tough, fast and might just kick the Sestito out of us tonight.

  7. This Blues team is the toughest in the League. I’d be happy so long as we don’t get completely manhandled.

  8. Lose badly tonight, and get worrying. But to leap to the ledge over a 4-3 Islanders loss is crazy-pants. They’ve beaten some good teams this month. LGR!

  9. St. L is powerful 5 on 5. Will be interesting to see how they will do 5 on 4 when Richie is on the ice,

  10. “For sure, some guys enjoy playing the opposite side, but it’s a very different game and for me, I’ve played left side my whole career and it was a bit of an adjustment,” said Del Zotto, who will start with the Predators on the left side of impressive rookie Seth Jones.

  11. I remember when you couldn’t even hear the second half of the National Anthem at the Garden. Pathetic these days.

  12. Steen completely shrugged off a hit from someone. Might’ve been Kreider. Didn’t even flinch.

  13. Stranger Nation on

Step has the puck entering zone and he just throws it around boards – he has the teams two best snipers on his left and right – make a move, pass the puck

  14. MSG hates north country Ranger fans. Blacked out again. I’m watching tonight’s game through this blog cast. Tell me something good.

  15. Womp womp. This goal’s going to count. Simply can’t turn the puck over like that in the offensive zone

  16. Apparently Nash’s defensive prowess was one of the factors into adding him to Team Canada…

  17. Haha beats me Romeo.

Man, Kreider takes the puck away, hits the post, then gets taken out to reward him for all that. Then again, he was woeful on that goal against so..

  18. Re: Nash & Team Canada – Because he is big, the idea is he’ll throw his body around. He did it quite well in 2010. They aren’t relying on Nash to score…He’ll be on the 4th line.

  19. ThisYearsModel on

THE wrecks Bouwmeester, hits the post then gets wrecked well after the play right next to the ref. No call.

  20. Stranger Nation on

Kreider has to pay Back(es) for that cheap hit – cannnot believe they didn’t call a penalty

  21. Stranger Nation on

See dubb – can you listen in on WFAN on web? Kenny and dave is the best way to ‘watch’ the game.

  22. That was a deliberate but end of Backes’ stick to THE’s face! The ref is looking right at it. Of course no call! Somebody needs to punch Backes in the face for that and then punch the ref in the face for being an incompetent idiot!

  23. Knew as soon as Sam said we are 6th in power play that we were going to do nothing.
    as scripted.

  24. Stranger Nation on

Did Stralman buy a ticket tonite? seems to be just watching the game, not really participating…

  25. Dave Maloney thinks the Rangers played well considering they only made the one mistake where Girardi failed to get it deep and St Louis went to work…

  26. What kind of team bender did this bunch go on the night before they played the Devils? 7-1?? Why couldn’t they have done that last night?

Then again, you trade your spiritual leader? The guy that everyone wants next to him in a foxhole? There is bound to be an emotional letdown in the first few days after such a wrenching displacement.

  27. Fastest 150 seconds in National Hockey League?

How are these 150 seconds faster than any other 150 seconds?

  28. headache all day
    internet not working
    behind on work
    not having a
    great day
    this Rangers team
    is sure not giving me
    a small peak of

  29. Olga Folkyerself on

We had some sunshine today. The sun might as well have been painted on the sky for all the good it did.

  30. Speaking about easy goals – it’s amazing how easy Pissies can score – 2 min. – 2 easy goals against Fishies.

  31. St. Louie just wants to wear us down physically. J Moore skating a whole lot tonight. Me likes it

  32. @rangersreport

As if proof is needed that I don’t understand everything … I don’t understand what AV is doing with his D pairs.

  33. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I don’t seem to remember the first St. Louis loss as a “good one”.

I remember it as part of a nine game aasen kicking.

  34. Time to jinx: Halak is clearly gonna get the shutout tonight… I don’t think there’s any way the Rangers can score on him … how many blankings will he have in his career after this one tonight ?

  35. It seemed like Nash and Kreider had been getting breakaways in bunches lately. But St Lou is no Leastern conference softie.

  36. Stemmer…..Can’t jinx the opposition. Works as a reverse double jinx. Now he will get the shutout.

  37. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Stemmer – Halak has 28 lifetime shutouts. He’s en fuego. No way we score on him.

  38. Stranger Nation on

Nash seems to be looping high in zone away from ‘dirty areas’ against a hitting team like Blues

  39. I’m telling you, they broke the spiritual back of this club when they dealt MDZ. You can’t take away that kind of soul and not suffer from it.

  40. Little (Klein) plays solid so far. No wonder – according Sam he was in the top 10 D in Nashville.

  41. “Backes got the butt-end of his stick up again on Staal.”

there’s a lot wrong with that sentence.

  42. If Klein can play 19 minutes or more a game in the top 4 of Nashville he can certainly do the same here.

  43. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_I knew Nash was going to score there._

    Sure you did.

  44. Shattenkirk has weird eyebrows…

ps, is anybody else sick of hearing how “THRILLED” someone playing at the garden?

  45. Troutwig to Shattenkirk on live TV: “Would you like to come back and play for the Rangers?” Like he expects the kid to say, “Oh, yeah, I can’t wait to get out of St. Louis. Sucks down there.” What a goof.

  46. CCCP

Privyet — and yes. The edict from Dolan to his serfs that they exclaim about the arena and its specialness and its uniqueness at least eight times a minute is garbage and protesting too much

  47. Stem, it’s probably because you really didn’t believe what you were saying. in other words it was the
    “bogus” reverse double jinx.

  48. Trautwig’s lower teeth rack is scary. Which is not saying that the rest of him is a piece of art. But for a guy on the tube as much as he is? Wow. But then maybe it’s refreshing he hasn’t gone cosmetic man there.

  49. I’m here now. Caught up on Dvr. Had to attend my kid who is 3 parent day care teacher conf. Told teacher to shut up.

Anyway can we get a freaking point. The blues are a beast speed physical skill. They smother you.

    Nash PEDs?

I just remembered when I was in Vegas for work in July I bet the blues to win cup at 15-1 odds.

  50. Stranger Nation on

Coos – FYI – earlier in broadcast they mentioned Ulfie sets the D pairings

Girardi not playing well, not to mix it up

  51. Stranger Nation on

Klein sent Steen flying into boards mid way through period – Steen never came back. We scored next shift and played stronger the rest of the period.

    Prust saying…

  52. If somebody deserved a goal – it’s Nash. Really worked hard and in spite all mocking here, didn’t avoid any tough spots. Mentally unstoppable.

  53. Stranger Nation on

Shattenkirk cries in front of ref and gets a call.
Kreider gets a butt end in the face and doesn’t get a call

  54. Sam in the second period: “You know, Joe, the Blues have scored on the first 10 seconds of a PP 14 times…”

    PP goal within 9 seconds.

    Thanks Sam! talk about jinx

  55. This team’s PK at critical junctures has been horrendous lately. And the PP isn’t coming through at those times either.

  56. Olga Folkyerself on

CCCP-Did you know they started putting vitamins in beer?
Last time, I really got bombed!

  57. Admiral

Take it over. Besides the scoreboard they’ve smothered rangers almost all night. All shots from outside

  58. Blues are a better team than the Rangers (obviously) — it’s going to take a great effort to tie this one.

  59. speaking of jinx
    as soon as everyone
started talking about how successful our power play has become
    it’s gone in the

  60. maybe tonight’s game
    would feel less painful
    if the jackwagon blues
    would have actually beaten
    the devils the other night

  61. Super second guess, but a one-timer there would have been cool and maybe left a second for a rebound.

  62. NYR wasted the Nash advantage by completely deferring to him every time he was on the ice. When you do that, you eliminate yourself as a threat and STL can happily overplay Nash with no fear of puck punishment. Especially on the last play; it was so obvious that NYR were trying to get Nash the puck.

  63. I don’t think I heard Klein’s name once all night…just sayin’.

This Blues team is a Cup contender, for sure. Is there anything they don’t do well?

That PK late in the third was impressive against the Ranger PP.

  64. I’m tired of getting beaten by these guys who grew up Rangers fans… Shat, VanReimsdyk

  65. ThisYearsModel on

The Rangers once again play super soft. The Blues abused them at will with zero response. High hits, sticks to the face by Backes, late shots by Oshie, Jackman, and no push back. A clueless goalie that we could only get one puck past. The Rangers are very far away from winning anything other than one round in the playoffs…..if they get the right match up. Good thing they got rid of Del Zotto.

  66. This is exactly why, with a mid-level NHL team, you do not trade a young player for a much older player. This jerk G.M. always acts like he is just one journeyman body acquisition from sipping champagne.

Face it, this man’s blue print is just “making the playoffs,” every year, That represents “success” to him. Yes, trade Del Zotto the wash-out, but get some long-term value in return, Bozo.

  67. Robby, I am not one to defend Sather, but I think AV didn’t want MDZ. Sather traded other guys that Torts wanted out.

  68. Honestly, I’ll be pleasantly surprised with more than one point out of the Yankee Stadium games

  69. Longbeard Since 1994 on

In the “just sayin” category: How often do we hear Sam say, “Richards shoots from the point, and HE MISSED THE NET”!

  70. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Ty – I won’t be surprised (or pleased) with one point at Yankee Stadium, especially since I’ll be freezing my aasen off at both games.

  71. Did Cally play tonight Henrik has to stop passing the puck; everytime he does the other team gets it for 2 minutes Boy did you see 17 Moore cycle in the 3rd period. Is he ever fast and at home the left side. Stepon , Cally & Haglan hav o up their game. We re sStill careless in our own end and have to play with more speed and control to pressure the opposition

  72. ThisYearsModel on

Rangers under this ownership…”It’s Different Here.” Should be….Commitment to Mediocrity.

  73. Stranger Nation on

Klein looked good, so did J moore on his natural side

the trade can be looked back in 3 years as J Moore @ ~$2MM for 3 yrs or MEZ @ $3+MM for 3 years Plus we got a Right handed stay at home D who plays tough, can move the puck and skate a little.

  74. A good childhood friend (who married his high school sweetheart) and then made it sicko big on Wall Street hired a Dutch Nanny to care for his children.

Mama Mia. He was divorced shortly there after.

Remarried to a Wall Street bimbo.

    Divorced again within 5 years.
