It’s Go Time! … Islanders at Rangers

[polldaddy poll=7734053 align="left"]
Game 52.fishsticks
Islanders at Rangers.

The Rangers and Islanders play the first of three head-to-head games in 11 days, including next Wednesday’s  Yankee Stadium game, and another meeting at MSG two nights later.

The teams have split the first two meetings, each winning on the road.

The Rangers have won six of their last seven games and are 6-1-1 in their last eight at home and 11-3-1 overall since a Dec. 20 loss to the Islanders. The Islanders are 9-3 in their last 12 games and have won eight of their last 10 road games.

Henrik Lundqvist will not dress tonight. The team said he’s out with the flu.

Cam Talbot gets the start in goal, and the Rangers, scrambling for a backup, signed David LeNeveu, who was on a minor-league contract with Hartford (AHL) to back up Talbot tonight.

Kevin Poulin is expected to start for the Isles.

Red-hot Islander Kyle Okposo comes off a Gordie Howe hat trick plus a skills competition goal vs. Philly Monday.

Don’t forget to vote for the Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left.

About Author

  1. re-post:

I was thinking the same thing, Jonathan, as were many writers … but the Rangers insist it’s the flu. Not that we must believe them.

  2. Flu? Lundqvist looked fine to me the other night except when he tweak something in the 3rd period. This is exactly why you cannot trade Talbot. Lundqvist is now in his thirties. Body could start to break down.

  3. *Step* on their *necks*, Rangers. On their *freakin* necks.

Would be so damn *METAL* if ya did.

  4. Jeff in South Dakota on

I thought Hank has had a nagging injury for some time now. He tweaked it last game and also it seems to me he’s lost his stick a lot of times this year, like he’s had problems with his grip.

  5. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

*Chemistry* from Kreids and Nash, eh? Somebody had a sleepover last night.

  6. Remember the good ol’ days when we were seriously considering that the Rangers should probably buy out Nash or Hank rather than Richie? We’re a completely different team now.

  7. You expect us to wait for a TWO game losing streak before we start all that again, Carp? =)

  8. Isles really bringing the pace. Rangers will have to match it or hope they can’t sustain it. Can’t defend like this for 60 minutes!

  9. Wheres McDonagh? The D has been screwed up for a couple shifts. Staal was playing with DZ, Stralman on the left side with Moore. Thats why they look lost, the D pairings have been off

  10. iManny, King of Metal on

Awesome outlet pass there by Girardi. Nash has stolen Ovechkin’s soul.

    Tavares: -2

  11. I like how that puck ping-ponged around in the Islander net behind the goalie! I could watch that all night!

  12. Carcillo had some room top corner. He’s almost scored at least twice in the last few games.

  13. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Why was the original comment acceptable but the response unacceptable?

  14. I thought I saw one of those fruity cocktails with a little umbrella in it on the back of Cam’s net. The guy looks so relaxed out there!!

  15. iWork’s love to have seen girardi level okposo there instead of tiptoeing through the tulips

  16. iManny, King of Metal on

Latona would really appreciate the term *ledgehog* based on his affinity for interesting animals.

  17. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

The original comment was accusatory and disrespectful to Nash. I am not permitted to challenge anyone.

    *Cameron Talbot*
    *Richard Nash*

  18. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Isles not bringing it at the moment. Good._

Another attempt to undervalue the excellent play of Cameron Talbot.

The Islanders scored. Are you happy they brought it and scored?

  19. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

A power play goal would be the ideal response to the Islanders goal.

  20. I like Capuano, but he needs to buy some new clothes. It’s been awhile since he lost that weight and I don’t think he bought any smaller suits.

  21. Manny, saw your post in a thread or two ago talking ’bout Founders Porter. It’s freakin amazing! All told.

  22. Jeez, I go in to have a quick dinner with the wife, and you boneheads can’t defend a 2-0 lead for me? Write better! Though the Isles deserve something for all their efforts, I suppose.

  23. Rangers better tighten up in their zone.
    power play looked better tonight
more so than the last 3 against caps

  24. #19 doesn’t even appear on the D screen 80% of the time. And when he does, he’s either seriously avoiding making a check or bothering OUR goaltender.

  25. Sam yakking so much about inconsequentia that he completely misses Isles dangerous rush just before Nash’s goal.

  26. Also hasn’t noticed yet only one ref, saying both refs them missed the trip by Isle’s goalie.

  27. The Blues are plus 62 wow we are plus one including tonight. The Ducks are 20-0 at home. Nevermind the champs. The West is the best.

  28. Good evening all! Man, I miss being more regular here….know I’m late to the party, but the Torts story cracks me up….LGR!!!

  29. no goal
    but pp looks better
here’s to putting one in the net
    next time
    there will be a
    next time

  30. A gift from your friendly refs…..remember that when we all complain. A bad of a call as I have seen in a long time. And that’s saying something. Even saw it on replay

  31. See CC Kreider, now see what you have done.

Agree with the general consensus on the call….

  32. Wow…Nash is possessed. Let’s keep it going until June!!

Kreider only 1 point behind MacKinnon in rookie scoring…

  33. Stupid @19, all he does is help us score on the PP. We’d have something if he’d only hit more.

  34. Am I going to get yelled at because I was bummed Messier’s goal record got passed by the former mullet?

  35. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

A terrible defensive breakdown right in front of the crease.

  36. The D better bring their A game vs. St. Louis, the Debbies are putting the Blues in a bad mood.

  37. was that a major league dive by Nash?
    and if so
    why bother
he had room and has been going inside to the net?

  38. Be thankful have a lead. Rangers have been awful in there d zone coverage. Guys wide open all night. Why do I feel this will turn bad.

  39. Carp, and anyone at the game…get home safe. It’s a hartnelling clutterbuck out there….

  40. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

More defensive breakdowns lead to a goal against and a tie game.

  41. Isles down 2 goals at one point…had us right where they wanted us. We should’ve put em away while we had the chance

  42. Rangers don’t seem to want to cycle at all tonight. That sometimes happens when goals come fairly easily. Maybe time for fourth line to grind out a shift or two?

  43. Rangers acting like pre-losing streak
not being disciplined in all 3 zones
    and strong on forecheck
    getting into bad habits
hoping we end up in tie or ahead
    and get our act together

  44. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_too bad they cant just use @19 on one side of the redline_

That is what he is paid to do. Offensive production.

  45. Would have been nice to steal this one on counterattacks and PPs, but the Isles have been the better team through 2. Going to have to earn it.

  46. iMister D
“…Carcillo looks 10 pounds heavier than when he was acquired”.
First, he is full of carsillo.
Second, he is just sad – no one wants talk to him

  47. On one hand you feel for Tavares/Okposo that they’re stuck in that franchise. On the other hand they’re Islanders and you hope they get hit by a bus.

  48. LOL, Jeff. … Would you love to have either of those guys?

Couple of seasons ago, when I thought Isles were headed the right way, I liked Okposo. Then last year I thought he was overrated. Now he’s a monster again. Seems like a great kid, too.

  49. Rangers playing terribly. Awful through the neutral zone, nobody skating, lots of reaching and nudging pucks but nobody strong on the puck. Nash is back Henk is back, but Pouliot is back too. Time to find a better winger for that line.

Better get it in gear or they’re blowing two big points to a hot divisional rival. And better raise the intensity bait – somehow never high enough for the Rangers against the Isles.

  50. Playing like we got the flu. Could be. Zucc getting small minutes, McD, Danny a step slower than usual.

  51. Carp must be because the rivalries built through the playoffs and season over the last decade or so have been with the Devs, Pens, Flyers and Caps. Really tough to get up to play a team that’s always on the bottom. But guess what? They ain’t anymore. Would guess lots of the Isles live in NYC but get less respect everywhere than the Rangers do and that probably gets them PO’ed in general.

  52. feared that all the winning
    was going to go
    their heads

    the way they’re playing
    it has
    and they’re acting as if
they don’t have to put in any

  53. Never NEVER will SalmonJoe say that #19 is floating or is responsible for any of a myriad of bad plays. A 20 goal scorer is not good enough to play just one way.

  54. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I would take *Okposo* and, of course, Tavares. Despite his *penalties* (jk)

  55. Weird, because I don’t hate the NYI as much as I do PIT, or the NJD, or of course PHI. No doubt it’s due in part to them being down for so long, but given how much pain they caused me (’80-’83) it is a strange sensation.

  56. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Zuccarello only 7:53 through two. Not sure if he was hurt a some point and missed shifts.

*Helloooooo* I was complaining about this above when Zucc was missing from a number of PP’s in a row. That’s why Kreider/Nash/Stepan got more time on the ice during those two.

  57. Two of the three (maybe all three) have been the result of really lackadaisical defense. Considering their recent streak, I’m actually going to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust them to tighten up and play real hockey in the third.

Torts needs to take this intermission and whip these guys into shape!

  58. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_A 20 goal scorer is not good enough to play just one way._

    Fair counter.

  59. Hey Mama!
    thanks for the haiku love

did you get the Bruce with the DVD?
is it worth the extra $$?
    (i would think so but…)

  60. Okposo is another guy like Kreider just growing into his body and his hockey skills. Helps big time playing with 91 but he is another strong dude.

  61. iManny, King of Metal on

Thanks, *Carp*. Too little, too late.

*Mama*: I was certainly making fun of *us* and not *you*

  62. iManny, King of Metal on

I think Zucc had an *equipment malfunction* because he was off the ice for a few PP’s. Can’t be on purpose.

Unless AV was mad that he started that scrum.

  63. I enjoyed to Benn elbow too.

How about that bizarre story about the Ottawa owner hiring forensic professionals to prove Cooke intentionally cut Karlsson with his skate last year?

  64. Talbot has not controlled rebounds well in this game, though none have resulted in goals against.

  65. Not liking the feel of this game from NYR perspective… I would be happy with a point. NYR not assertive enough.

  66. Olga Folkyerself on

Don’t wait for a stick raising tonight Mama. I don’t think they have it in them…

  67. What’s more likely a late goal by rangers or def zone issues on isles gw.

    That’s why I want ot.

There speed is a problem off the rush.

  68. POULET doesn’t score on the easy tap-in … SHOCKING.

Next up: He’ll complete his “penalty box hat trick”

  69. Btw I will be freezing my arse off at Yankee Stadium…anyone looking for tickets? I have 2 extra, Main 232A 3rd row.

  70. iManny, King of Metal on

I think the Rangers are tired because AV made them have a *non optional* skate this morning.

  71. iManny, King of Metal on

“Hey. Psycho. Take off my Van Halen T-Shirt before you jinx the band and they break up.” – Robbie Hart

  72. There they are Hedberg.

Actually thought Hagelin was really good on early PKs. Not much 5-on-5 for either of them or their centerman. Or the third line.

  73. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_No OT, no SO, win in regulation….please!_

Why does it matter as long as the Rangers win?

  74. “Sir, one more outburst and I’ll strangle you with my microphone wire. You understand me?”

  75. Is the league not embarrassed to have a terrible officiating mistake change the outcome of an entire game?? That was so ridiculous

  76. iManny, King of Metal on

“Now let’s cut the cake because I know the fat guy’s gonna have a heart attack if we don’t eat soon.”

  77. How stupid could you be.

Kreider use your freaking head. His penalties are just careless freaking careless.

  78. You just know this is going to be one of those idiotic penalties that we end up not killing off…

  79. iManny, King of Metal on

That was a really stupid move. He wasn’t even over the wall when he was playing the puck.

  80. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

New NHL rule: 4 minutes of penalties assessed to the Rangers for having Two Too Many Men on the Ice.

  81. Love Stralman on the PK. He’s very good and has earned a multi-year, multi-million per deal.

  82. Wow, the tank jobs this team has done against the Devils and the Islanders this season are truly awe-inspiring. In a bad way.

  83. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

They believed their own hype, took the Islanders for granted, and got a dose of reality.

    This shouldn’t have happened.

  84. I will say this in all seriousness, Richards is great in that situation, just knows what to do there

  85. I don’t care what you boneheads say about Pittsburgh, Philthy, Washington, and the Derbils — I bleeping HATE THE FISHSTICKS PASSIONATELY.

  86. yes ADMIRAL
    as scripted
i am trying not to go post-angry
at what should have been 2 points
    so i couldn’t think correctly

  87. Brutal. Hope this isn’t the start of a losing streak considering we can’t beat Isles or Devils

  88. Well, Trautwig has to fake it now.

Very bad loss. Up 3-1 at home in the latter stages of the 2nd and you lose? Brutal.

  89. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

    Columbus beats LA (29-16-6)
The Devils blow out the Blues (33-11-5)

And we can’t beat the Islanders.

Way to show you deserve to be taken seriously, guys.

  90. Lots to be ashamed of tonight. Not just from the Rangers, but from me for getting excited for this franchise for a day and a half.

Shame on me for forgetting a lesson I’ve learned time and time again.

  91. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

I was mourning the defensive breakdowns that caused Cameron Talbot to allow four goals against.

  92. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Again, team as it is constituted currently, not physical enough on D or the Fwds

  93. No answer for Tavares. The dude dominated the Rangers more than any player I’ve seen recently

  94. Carp, I think if Hank is in net, hockey is still being played. Talbot was alright tho, can’t fault him for most of those

  95. Didn’t have the puck enough… Isles beat the D pretty bad all night. Definitely not Talbot’s fault tonight. Oh well, if this is them laying an egg, I’ll live with it. Win the next one.

  96. Life as a Rangers fan is to live everyday in a Greek mythological tragedy. It is as freshly painful day after day.

    (See: Prometheus)

  97. Is there an antithesis to the Broadway hat?

183rd Street jock strap? Whatever it is, Girardi is wearing it tonight.

  98. They got beat to just about every loose puck in their own end and were losing the puck battles along the walls all night. I wonder if the flu is going thru the team? Zucc was pretty invisible tonight, and everyone seemed lethargic.

  99. No, I don’t think Talbot’s at fault whatsoever. I’m just saying, sometimes Lundqvist steals one like this. And this would have been a steal. Almost was, actually.

  100. Haha I just realized David LeNeveu is included in the poll for 3 stars. My mind’s struggling to come up with a scenario where Talbot gets pulled, LeNeveu comes in, and earns the 1st star with a stellar performance.

  101. Can’t win ’em all. Great game, though, terrific finish. Credit to the Islanders — they keep coming.

  102. Hey, we really sucked tonight. But of course, it HAD to be against the Fishsticks…

    As scripted.

  103. Wow, that was Carcillo with the soft play on the Martin goal. I thought it was Hagelin or Zuccarello earlier. And of course, Girardi was really soft on Tavares first.

  104. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Traid everyone!!!

    Burn down msg!!!

Get your dad punched in the stomach!!!

  105. Tavares’s career completely wasted so far. Guy deserves to be captaining a team to a Stanely Cup, not stuck in a complete waste of an organization.

  106. NJ NYI bluejackets all win we lose. Negative on goals for n against for the yr. again. Bad night

  107. Roll over, but it’s how they respond to losses like this one that will matter. Two more shots at the Islanders coming, and they know they can’t relax for a moment against these guys.

  108. 2011-12 team comes right back with a strong game. 2013-14? We’ll see. They did in the Pittsburgh-Toronto back-to-backs.

  109. Isles skated circles around the Rangers…they were the better team tonight and deserved their hard won victory. Ranger puck possession was abysmal. Talbot kept them in the game. Fish sticks, mish sticks…they played like a team possessed.

  110. Richie and Katie Strang, Carp? More interesting than talking about that game. Even Cally was awful.

  111. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_2011-12 team comes right back with a strong game._

Are you suggesting there is momentum from game to game? The Rangers lost a game in 2011-12, so they used the loss an impetus to play better the next game?

  112. This game was disturbing, at best. Everyone called it. If not for Nash’s brilliance and FINISH(can anyone else even spell that?), we would’ve gotten blown out, and probably should have.

Take it easy, it’s just the Isles, right?

  113. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Momentum is synonymous with impetus. A loss would be the impetus for better play the following game.

Your dismissal of momentum is a dismissal of the performance and results of one game affecting the performance and results of the following game.

I agree with your dismissals. If the Rangers lost a game in 2011-12 and followed the loss with a win, that win had nothing to do with the loss prior to it. If the Rangers win their next game against the Blues, it will not have had anything to do with the loss tonight.

  114. This storm is pretty bad … but does anybody else think that it never used to get so bad on the roads after the first 2-4 inches as it was today?

  115. I dismiss momentum from one playoff game to another.

and dismiss the notion that teams don’t react one way or another to a loss.

  116. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_dismiss the notion that teams don’t react one way or another to a loss_

I believe this is a disagreement, then?

Each game is separate from another. A win or loss has no impact on the performance or results of the next game.

  117. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I have zippo problem with Pouliot cross checking the hell out of McDonald, he was getting mauled there.

  118. You need more than one line showing up to win. They all took the nite off. Awful some times you need a crap game like this to gget back on track. No speed out of the defensive zone, no checking, hitting, no cycling. Transition game sucked. Isles controlled center ice all game. And yet we could stole this game Carp. But you know what we did nt deserve this win. Good way to build character. Was Cally playing . Giradi out there fore oa few goals. So was Mac
