It’s Go Time! … Rangers at Senators

[polldaddy poll=7726251 align="left"]
Game 50.senators
Rangers at Senators.

The Rangers come off a 1-0 win over Detroit at the Garden and are 4-1 in their last five games, 9-3-1 in their last 13.

They have won 12 of their last 16 road games and are 14-10 on the road for the season, after starting 2-6 on that nine-game season-opening road trip.

Today’s game is the only real road game in a stretch of 10 of 13 at home. The other two are at Yankee Stadium next week.

Ottawa comes in also on a roll, 6-0-2 in its last eight. The Senators won all three meetings last season, one of those in a shootout. The good news for the Rangers is that Ben Bishop is now in Tampa. The bad news is that tormentor Chris Neil is back in the lineup after an injury.

Cam Talbot starts in goal after sitting out six in a row and nine of the last 10 as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup, against Craig Anderson.

Otherwise, Alain Vigneault goes with the same lineup, which means Justin Falk is the only prucha. Derek Dorsett remains out injured.

Also, Happy 53rd to the Captain! Or, as we say here, “Happy 26th!”

  1. Big 35th bday for me tomorrow. My mother in law watching my 3 year old starting 5 mins ago until tomorrow. Peace and quiet and ranger hockey. 24 hrs with no tantrums. Best part is I get to sleep in Tom past 5 am.

Give me 4pts next 2 days and the dinner my wife is taking me out for tonight could be awful and I wouldn’t care.

  2. Over/under on how long it takes for Neil and Carcillo to throw down? We’ll probably have a use for his antics in this game, as opposed to, in my opinion, the Philly game when we were already up comfortably and he couldn’t help but fire them up.

  3. Perhaps coos, but I don’t think we won that game because he took a couple of them off their game. Obviously I’m biased in my dislike towards him, but I just don’t think he helped much by being typical Carcillo in that particular instance. Today might be a completely different story though.

  4. Carp

Just having some alone quiet time over next 2 days is good for me.

That said talbot gets his doors blown off him today. Senators are rolling.

  5. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Ok, I should elaborate a bit, we are moving east just outside of manhattan, but it’s manhattan montana, not NYC.

It is right outside of Bozeman and pretty close to big sky resort.

I screwed up and got promoted again.

    Happy 26th Eric!

I thought we were besties no matter where we were geographically?

  6. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Did u see the little kid with the Rangers jersey entering the arena when the game began? He was wearing #19, and I though, “Poor kid. His parents bought him a Richards jersey.” Then he passed and I said, “Yikes.” He had a No Gomez jersey.

    Poor kid.

  7. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

The trick is to not spend your whole work day at your computer doing non work related activity on the worst blog on the internet

  8. I better not post today…since I have The Eric syndrome – bad feeling about coming game. Don’t ask why.
    Best of luck, nevertheless…

  9. It’s so nice that Talbot took time out of his days to help Hank get more solid. He deserves this start for his hard work as a mentor alone.

  10. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

    Yes, Carp!!! Dean Talafous.

When that kid’s parents decided on #19, he was doomed.

  11. Lol. You say that, Wicky but I am on here a lot and I got promoted about 3 weeks ago. I’m an “Agency Attorney Level 2” now. Promoted probably for hanging out on this blog

Rangers Report makes you rich and succeasful beyond your wildest dreams.

  12. My promotion doesn’t even require me to pick up my family and disrupt their lives either.

  13. Where is stralman going on the goal. However yes it was a nice shot but he saw it all way. Has to be stopped.

  14. Great takeaway by Carcillo there too. And he actually almost scored on a nice shot against Detroit.

  15. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

“Ron Duguay will be analyzing what he sees from New York.”

That will be a short segment.

  16. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

All very true mannulok, which is why you have always been a better human than me

  17. I just didn’t want you to act like disparaging the blog helped you get ahead in life, Wicky.

  18. #19 is clearly making his buy-out next summer a ridiculous fantasy.

    But good for him.

  19. Stranger Nation on

El Zotto passes it to Moore with a forward right on top of him – what a dumb assen

  20. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

The real reason behind the move is to make the ilbsters trip out here easier so they don’t have to go too far from the resort

  21. They really are, Carp. Richards will be difficult to replace. And not cheap. If not for the Recapture I would keep him. Really.

  22. Staal and Girardi have looked MUCH better the past few games. Combine that with Hank’s resurgence and it’s a great sign

  23. Stranger Nation on

Loved to see a scatter plot of Richards’ goals this season. He has scored some from very tight angles.

He is really good on 5v3

  24. Pay Leonard with some unexpected humor:

@PLeonardNYDN: Neil: “Hi, Dan. I thought you were on the Kings.” Carcillo: “No, I got traded.” Neil: “Want to fight?” Carcillo: “Later.” #maybe

  25. Condra was one of my favorite Nintendo games growing up.

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.

  26. Why do the cameras always show me players wailing down a tunnel instead of a scrum or confrontation!?

  27. Our PP’s been consistently good for a very long stretch now. When’s the last time we were able to say that?

  28. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I’ll reserve judgment on this period until I hear what Professor Duguay thinks.

  29. Don’t give Duguay too much credit now. I doubt he even watches the highlights. He always seems to be making it up as he goes along.

  30. leetchhalloffame on

Shooting blanks and shooting blanks and shooting some more blanks. This team must have the worst shooting percentage in the league.

  31. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I just noticed that the *last* 3 digits of my Credit Card are *666*. No Joke!

  32. would be nice to have one legit 30-goal scorer, leetch. Just a guy who could score one once in a while without having to work so hard for a goal.

  33. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

Maybe they should put you in the *production* booth, Carp?

Actually, an Idea I *have* is to develop a sports Network that is like HBO in that you can show ANYTHING including foul language. Viewers would pay for Hockey games and the sounds would be actual on ice cameras and you would hear the benches and the coaches and the refs and the players. Much like 24/7. The Cameras would focus on *action* and possibly get some cool in between period stuff.

Most of us don’t *need* an announcer telling us what’s occurring. We’re experienced *fans*

  34. Got it. I stopped reading his posts some time ago. The book I read to my daughter at bedtime has more meaningful content than his posts. By a wide margin.

“And a comb and a brush and a bowl full if mush. And a quiet old lady who was whispering “hush”

  35. Yup, that’s the point. They have a lot of guys who will work hard for goals. But nobody — other than Nash, when/if he’s going — who can score one easily here and there and change one of these games. I mean, if he scored one against Tampa … or today … or even Detroit …

Richards had two of their three goals over the last three games, Zuccarello has the other, on a pass.

  36. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Brian Boyle and Dominic Moore are interchangeable.

  37. My son gets a new book just about every day from school he has to read. My daughter like My Little Pony.

  38. The PP is really good. It’s unbelievable to see the Rangers have a threat on the PP. They got a little sloppy on the finish on that one. But still.

  39. Whoever asked, the Rangers team shooting percentage is 7.33%. Next to last in the league (Buffalo).

  40. there’s another example of having a tough guy (on the ice, even) doesn’t prevent another tough guy from running around. It doesn’t.

  41. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Whoever asked, the Rangers team shooting percentage is 7.33%. Next to last in the league_

Terrible luck. That percentage should progress towards the mean by season’s end.

  42. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Gravy – if you don’t count Girardi’s candy-ass wrist shots from the point, the shooting percentage is 12.94%

Not really, but none of those shots result in goals.

  43. St. Louis had a hat trick on us early in the season at Tampa, probably not against McD and Girardi

  44. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Neil turned down more money from the Rangers to remain in Ottawa. He saved Sather from himself.

  45. Nash isn’t getting an assist on this goal, but if you look at what happened just prior to it, you’ll know that Nash is back. He didn’t just dump the puck, he pushed it forward went for a physical contact which allowed his linemates to get deep behind the net.

  46. Stranger Nation on

Talbot – one of toughest guys on team

Man – he plays steady..none of the Zoolander drama when he is in net

  47. Talbot sprawled on ice behind net.

    “He’s an excellent ref, Sam.”

    “Yes, he is, Joe.”

  48. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

God….that poor little girl they showed in the stands is wearing a Chris Drury jersey. What’s next? Zherdev?

    Attention parents!

Update your kids’ jerseys, especially if they’re wearing &%^_@$!!! ones.

  49. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_you’ll know that Nash is back._

Nash has scored 5 goals in his last 6 games. It was already apparent that he was back.

  50. Retire Brad Park……I can get you Petr Nedved Jersey for real cheap if you’re interested.

  51. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

    Papa Bear

I’m holding out for a Reijo Ruotsalainen jersey.

He was a fave of mine when I was young. Boy, could he carry the puck from coast to coast.

  52. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

    _last warning._

Is this warning directed at me?

Did I violate the Terms of Service by stating facts?

  53. Rexi was a gifted skater. I loved when he would skate circles around the Philthies in their long dark pants.

I used to yell, “Go Rexi, Go”

  54. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Kenneth – read the fine print of the Terms of Service.

It says you can be voted off the island for being a d-bag.

  55. I like Step. Smart, game, and a stronger and better skater than he looks. But man he’s pulling a Richards from last season (and Gabby in years before) in all the points he piles up in one game before going cold again for five….

  56. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Since stating facts violates the terms of service, the Senators lead the Rangers 3-1 at the start of the 3rd period.

  57. Blister please with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he’d love to find your tongue in his teeth
In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
Sounding only at night as you sleep
And in my dreams you’re alive and you’re crying,
As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet,
Rings of flowers ’round your eyes
And Ill love you for the rest of your life when you’re ready

  58. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

If they play the same puck possession game this period that they played the first two periods, they should win. It is too early to go into a shell.

  59. Rangers have to pile up points now as they are healthy. That won’t last and lack of depth could be issue.

  60. Did you guys know that that ref is expecting a baby sometime soon? I don’t think Sam and Joe have mentioned that crucial bit of information nearly enough.

  61. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Carp – are you going to both Yankee Stadium games?

Mrs. Park and I are coming down from Cooperstown for them. (I know. I’m an enabler. I’m just putting money in Dolan’s pocket.)

If so, I’ll try to leave Stan’s Sports Bar early to find you.

  62. I’ll be there, Retire. Let me know where you’re sitting. don’t know how much time or access I’ll have to outside the pressbox. Especially if you’re anywhere near the moat.

  63. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

With the consistency which Richards is performing, it is unlikely Sather will buy him out in the offseason.

  64. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Not every team would take Zuccarello_

  65. ILB,,,,,,Nash was in line for a Papa Bear vote until he fanned on the pass to The Kreider.

  66. Back to back really strong performances for our team. I wouldn’t call the wins dominating, but they’ve played extraordinarily well. Keep it going!

  67. Talbot is also easy on the eyes. May not be spectacular but steady and makes saves look easy.

  68. Joe M called him “Kiss Kreider.” Do we have to start calling him that now rather than THE?

  69. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Rangers win behind a spectacular Cameron Talbot performance.

  70. Right Carp, just saying the last two in particular have been exceptional. They’ve been playing very well for longer than that, as you said.

  71. Better…

Time to see if the roads are still drivable up here, and if yes, find the place for an early dinner. The girls must be getting hungry.

  72. So glad my feelings were wrong. Beautiful win. Really good.
They better win again tomorrow – my big bonding day – go with both my boys to MSG (sec.200). Who else?

  73. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

In regards to a Richards buyout, two things must be taken into account: the inconsistency of Glen Sather and the rising salary cap.

  74. WARNING:

Tomorrow’s game against the plummeting Caps has danger written all over it if said danger is not taken very seriously.

I think Washington is going to be loaded for bear. But, like every fragile team, they will leave huge opportunities to exploit if the NYR aren’t flat.

  75. You will see me with the big sign: “Glenn, Rangers are OK now, TIME 2 GO!” and Olga’s tribute picture bellow.

  76. I really love Talbot. I loved how he bumped a sens player skating off after the second period, handles the puck really well. This guy is the real deal, rangers better not let this guy go.

  77. the salary cap’s not going up nearly enough for a team to be able to afford that recapture penalty for a player not on the roster. Not even close.

Is Slats a wild card? Absolutely. I think Gorton and Schoenfeld will quit if he doesn’t do it this summer. And if Dolan has even a small clue, he has to insist on it.

  78. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I love watching Hockey Night in Canada after an afternoon Rangers win. After a loss, not so much.

    Have a great night everyone….

  79. There is one factor to the Richards buyout and *one* factor *only* and it’s called *Cap Recapture Penalty*

  80. So the Rangers have 55 points and are in 2nd place. They have a chance to put some distance in that placement tomorrow against the Caps (and on Eric’s Birthday)

  81. carp, that’s true about the isles so there double dangerous. The isles have lost I think 2 games out of the last 10 or something like that.

  82. Manny, you know that I’m talking about photos of Papa in a bathing suit, right?

and now he’s talking skinny dipping. No thank you.

  83. That’s very scary, Carp. I assume those people are still reading along. They are just currently “occupied”

  84. Rangers don’t have cap room to keep Richards Cally Girardi and give raises to zucc Kreiider etc.

  85. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Too much is being made out of the cap recapture penalty. If Richards retires in the 2015 offseason, the penalty will be just below $3m through 2019-20. If Richards retires in the 2017 offseason or any offseason subsequent to 2017, the penalty will be $5.6m through 2019-20.

Based on calculations, the salary cap will likely rise to above $80m in the next 4-5 years.

A $3m-$5.66m cap penalty is not going to decide the potential buyout of Richards. If Richards continues to produce, Sather will certainly make the decision to retain him, in my opinion.

  86. What does AV do when DDorsett comes back? Have a feeling Sather is going to want to make a move here soon to bring in a quality forward or a RH defensemen.

Glencross from Calgary is a guy I think Slats has wanted to for years.

  87. Matty"ILikeOurNewStyle"Boy on

This team is playing really well now. Really well.

It took the guys quite a while to get what AV was trying to do. But, this is now pretty to watch.

Nice team win. Good goaltending, BotCam.

  88. Boyle made a play in the 3rd period that I thought was very impressive. Ryan had the puck and was driving to the net. one of those plays where he takes 2 players with him and hits the trailer. Boyle was one of those two players. he read what was happening, and got away from Ryan and was able to pick up the trailing player. subtle, but great play.

  89. Stranger Nation on

That was a 4 pt game – making up for some of those home baked stinkers from early December.

  90. There is no incentive for him to retire before ’17-18 … his salary would be $7M in $16-17, which is way too much on its own. That said, the next year his salary is $1M, and that’s when the Rangers figure he will retire … hence the construction of the contract that way. But if he retires that season, when his salary is $1M, the penalty is almost $6M per for the next three seasons … for a player not on your team. Makes Lundqvist and Nash look like bargains.

  91. Stranger Nation on

El Zotto really puts his partner in some uncomfortable spots – passing to him with a man on him, standing still without puck so he provides no outlet.
    MEZ for Methot –

  92. Stranger Nation on

If the team was loaded with playable top 6 toughness and Mr Ed could plan the hired gun on PP and sit in slot and wait for puck to come him, you could almost make the case with his hands for Ozeon passing, face-offs and crazy angle shots

There is good, but some really bad stuff – did his shot on Talbot count in totals or his lazy change when Sens get a door step scoring chance.

    Makes you want to sing…

  93. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

    _Carp January 18th, 2014 at 5:13 PM_

Correct. At the point of the ’17-’18 season, the salary cap will have risen by a large percentage of what it is now.

As you agreed, Glen Sather is a wildcard. When has Sather ever set his sights on the future?

I agree that buying out Richards this offseason is the best option moving forward. I doubt that Sather will see it that way if Richards continues producing under Vigneault.

  94. Stranger Nation on

would you do it Manny? He is a lefty as well

I wouldn’t trade Miller, prob Hags and MEZ

  95. as I said, I think Gorton and Schoenfeld might lock him in a closet on July 1, then let him out after the buyout.

    or they might quit.

  96. this team is 2 players away from being contenders. a rugged stay at home Dman, and a physical 3rd line LW.
by the way, if Talbot is an UFA after the season, you have to seriously have to consider trading him at the deadline. he has made some money with his play this year. somebody is going to pay him.

  97. Manny-O-War, King of Metal on

I would probably do it, Stranger. I usually get overly sentimental about my own players but we could us a D-Man like him.

  98. They really played a good game.
Cam is pretty steady, they got some bounces and made a hot Ottawa team look not so hot.

I haven’t been so relaxed in a third period in awhile.

  99. Got home after the game, watched the highlights without knowing the outcome (tricky, you have to blur your eyes) and if you go just by those, looks like Stepan finally got the memo. He may even get a shift or two in the Olympics if he keeps this up!

And best backup goalie in the league, or what?
