It’s Go Time! … Lightnings at Rangers

[polldaddy poll=7713518 align="left"]
Game 48.lightning
Lightnings at Rangers.

This was the last game of last season, Game 48. And on this date, they hadn’t even begun playing yet … the Rangers’ opener last season was Jan. 19, 2013. Strange world of lockouts.

The Rangers, in 48 games last season, were 26-18-4 for 56 points, good for sixth in the East.

Through 47 this season, they are 24-20-3 for 51 points, sixth in the East.

But ya boys are on a roll with three straight wins, 8-2-1 in their last 11, 5-1-2 in the last eight at home, as they play the third of a four-game homestand and a stretch of 10 of 13 at home (with two of the three road games at Yankee Stadium).

Henrik Lundqvist starts his fifth straight game in goal, and Alain Vigneault goes with the same lineup for the third game in a row. That means Justin Falk is the only prucha.

No. 1 goalie Ben Bishop is expected to return from an injury for the Lightnings, who are still without Steven Stamkos — on the trip recovering from a broken leg. Tampa Bay is finishing up a stretch of three in a row and seven of eight on the road, having lost in Columbus Monday.

  1. My therapist has cleared me to watch tonight. I much fear serious trouble in the fuselage, Frederick.

  2. On the Michael Kay Show earlier today, they had a Seinfeld trivia contest to give away tickets for the Stadium Series. Most of the callers couldn’t answer the questions…answers varied from “Moops,” “Kenny Rogers Roasters,” “Bob Cobb (The name of the Maestro),” etc. Very disappointing.

    Let’s go Rangers!

  3. AV could be a elementary schoolteacher, explaining to the 3rd graders on topic of general hockey basics .

  4. Indeed Carp, indeed.

BTW Ran into a one Mark Jannsens today…a fine one time blueshirt. Almost ad nice as gravy.

  5. Callyman, very disappointing indeed. Too bad we couldn’t have had Bonehead Nation call in. We could have won those tickets, like Elaine did for Mr Pitt.

  6. Exactly, SeeeDubbb. Ironically, another question was “Which balloon did Mr. Pitt want to hold in the Thanksgiving Day parade?”

  7. Carp,
are we already in the “Monster” mode, i.e. McD – Monster, Nash – Monster, Zuk – Monstrillo, Carsillo – ?,etc., or it’s still early. Give a sign, please.

  8. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Has Carcillo been this bad in the three games I missed?_

In the whopping 1:31 of ice time he has gotten thus far?

  9. ThisYearsModel on

Zucc sure is fun to watch. If Torts was still here, he would have been doing this for another team.

  10. Another crap shift by Carcillo — I admit I’m looking only at him and wishing he were Miller, but still… bad.

  11. Another soft goal from the soft floater — I wish he’d stop. Makes you all far less entertaining :)

  12. On travel to Florida, and AMAZINGLY the game is blacked out on NHL Gamecenter. What a great investment.

  13. Boyle is like Ferdinand the Bull. Big and a softy. ..which makes him a very nice guy off the ice.

  14. Im a big fan of Boyle. Seems to be a little extra stone handsy this year, but he’s still very valuable.

  15. Agree Booby. I love Boyle. He’s softer than Amanda Kessel but he does plenty of good things.

  16. I think that Boyle is a very good penalty killer and does a lot of little things. I like him, but he is soft.

  17. Carp what are the chance’s Richards plays so well, that Sather doesn’t buy him out / AV wants to keep him at the end of the year?

It’s starting to scare me a little, if that makes sense.

  18. ThisYearsModel on

I think Boyle has played very well this season. He is on the 4th line and PK, which is the perfect role for him. Where I had a problem was when he was playing 2nd or 3rd line and the PP under the former coach, who never gets credit for anything.

  19. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_That was his first hit of the season … oh, wait, it was his 91st._

    Hits = Toughness?

The Blackhawks were last in the league in hits last season.

Ergo, they did not have toughness.

    They won the Stanley Cup.

Ergo, a team does not need toughness to win the Stanley Cup.

  20. Blackhawks have four forwards better than the best Rangers forward, and an offensive defenseman better than the Rangers have had since Leetch. They have the puck all night. They don’t need to hit a lot. But to say the Blackhawks have no toughness is ignorant.

  21. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Richards is playing with house/Cablevision money. He can have fun, hope for a productive year, and pick a contending team next year that needs a complementary player.

  22. Manny, where waiting patiently at the end of the Winter Classic to see what Phil Kessel’s sister looked like?

  23. ThisYearsModel on

This is definitely Richards’ last hurrah in NY. Glad he is playing better. he was so bad last year that I was afraid he had totally lost it never to recover it. He will hit the jackpot and somebody will get a real good depth player for a few years. Why the union agreed to allow the Buttman punishment rule on previously signed contracts is beyond me.

  24. That’s part of it Carp, but mostly that Boyle does not deliver big hits for a guy his size. He doesn’t play with a lot of snarl either. He’s not nasty. Not that anyone not named Carcillo, or Dorsett is either. Also, he may have a lot of hits, but they are soft hits. :)

  25. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_But to say the Blackhawks have no toughness is ignorant_

If hits = toughness and the Hawks finished last in the league in a category that by your definition measures toughness, how can the Hawks be considered tough?

  26. Have you ever seen the Blackhawks play? Do you think they lack toughness? Or is this just another one of your disagreements just to disagree?

  27. Hawks are tough in the best hockey sense — they will take a hit to make a play. The Bruins series turned, I thought, when they stopped trying to match the Bs hit for hit and focused on scoring goals.

  28. Richards should be playing his best because essentially Richards is playing for a new contract next year, at least one would think so.

  29. Blackhawks have a few guys who can actually play hockey but when called for can drop the gloves and duke it out. Blackhawks have plenty of toughness which you will need inn the playoffs.

  30. or if you want to call them gritty, anyway you want to spin it the blackhawks have those guys. Shaw, bollig and bickel are tough, gritty guys who can actually also play the game. Those guys don’t grow on trees.

  31. Boyle could crush people if he tried….

sometimes you feel sorry for the guy he is hitting..

if he hit like kasparitis… he would have ended some careers already

  32. ThisYearsModel on

MDZ keeps playing like this, no way he gets traded and if he does, at least his value should have improved some.

  33. I’m just wondering, who will compensate Brich’s points (he is on pace of 21 goals and 40 assists)in regular and for how much? Too early?

  34. @NYRangers

#NYR Stats: not a bad 1st period for @BRichards_1991: scored a goal, won all 5 of his faceoffs, blocked 2 shots, had 2 shots on goal #Richie

  35. Disagree just to disagree, moi? If I have an opinion I will give it. It has nothing to do with being a contrarian. I think Boyle is an effective player. He is good at what he does. I just don’t think he’s a real “hockey tough guy”. That does not mean that he does not play hard and is a weak player. I think he is soft, in hockey terms, for a guy his size.

  36. No, Hank, that wasn’t meant for you. Nothing wrong with disagreeing. Just one person in particular … that’s all he does. If I said it’s 2014, he’d say 2013 or 2015.

  37. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Norm – you do see when positive things are said about Richards, yes? You have read that I’ve said he’s playing much better, yes? Or does your internal filter merely toss that aside?

  38. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_The Bruins series turned, I thought, when they stopped trying to match the Bs hit for hit and focused on scoring goals._

This is correct. They beat the Bruins by using their skill and speed to create goals.

  39. Just caught up on Dvr. We had a few chances from Kreider to convert. Good period hank was sharp. Little too sloppy in front of net.

  40. ThisYearsModel on

Anyone his size is considered soft unless he is maniacal like Lucic. Boyle has probably heard that crap his entire life. He has adapted his game and become an NHL player. I admire him for improving his skating, his face off proficiency and his hard work.

  41. looked to me Hedman lost his edge and went into the boards awkwardly. Lucky for him Boyle is a nice guy because Boyle let up a bit on his check. If it was a flyer Hedman would be toast.

  42. I like Boyle… he is an important piece.

    I like criticizing him too…….

I want to be a coach again every time I see him………

  43. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_ Or is this just another one of your disagreements just to disagree?_

This is a disagreement based on the numbers.

A counter to your contention that the Blackhawks puck possession being the reason for the few amount of hits they recorded is that their CF% and FF% (puck possession statistics) was not much different from that of other teams that were near the top of the league in hits.

  44. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

How do the Rangers allow a breakaway seconds after a center ice faceoff?

  45. This a prime example of why they will never turn the corner. Rangers aren’t capable this year winning 4-5 in a row.

  46. I actually like that Hank went for the poke check there. Obviously would’ve been nice if he connected on that, but still…

  47. Boyle should just leave the puck alone in front of the net. It has more of a chance to go in without his help.

  48. wow!! rangers losing faceoffs, taking penalties, keep this up this game will get away from them quickly.

  49. As far as plays go off the face-off, that was pretty good. Nice to see the Rookie get another goal against the Rangers. Ugh!

  50. Tale of 2 Periods. Could they be anymore lopsided?

If the Boys can even it up this period, they could still pull off a win!

  51. Here’s my 2 cents tonight… Been saying it for a while, do we ever score on breakaways? Now a extra do we ever stop breakaways. How is that not diving on Bishop come on heading towards soccer. Karma though Cally does a lot of soccer stuff as well. Boyle is soft in addition to embarrassing himself when he drops the gloves, doesn’t finish hard most of the time. Btw awful play in front of the net by him and Dom Moore on a 3/1 and he shoots from the blue line? Bishop would be my 3rd choice for the Americans as well

  52. Another great break away…. Fire it as soon as you get it….lesson learned from Dom Moore?

  53. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

    Lotsa missed chances….

Don’t want to wait for the Foxwoods 5 for their firewagon routine.

Sorry, I still have Doc Emrick on the brain.

  54. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

That was an immaculate save by Bishop. That save is not being made by Hanka Hanka.

  55. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Yes, Manny, he just did an interview in which he said he’s looking forward to playing Team Canada on his home turf.

  56. …and then run for Canadian Parliament.

His posture after he made that glove save just reminded me of Dryden. Although he was not quite as tall as Bishop.

  57. THE DOWNTON is on and it’s great. You guys should watch. Are we down 3-1 yet or are the no-talents waiting ’till the third to go down two goals?

  58. This game smells like the game in which POULET makes a terrible giveaway or goes into the box and the Lightnings beat us 3-1.

  59. Good chances tonight, so will AV keep faith with his lines or shorten and try to combine hot players to beat Bishop? I’d keep the faith.

  60. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Kenneth hasn’t been this happy in four games._

    Why would Kenneth be happy?

The Rangers are losing and neither goal was the fault of THE Hanka Hanka.

  61. I’m starting to warm up to Carcillo!

    Seems like a decent guy.

    Did I just say that??????

  62. …doesn’t look good. Difference in chances realization.
Than comes frustration and apathy after…Hope lives next 20 min. or till next Tampa goal. Than Game Over.

  63. Not sure I’m mentally prepared for more Game of Thrones after what they did to us last season. Still, can’t wait.

  64. Is MDZ playing on his off side tonight? It looked like he had no idea what he was doing on the Kucherov goal.

  65. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Kenneth just confirmed he is happy when Hank lets in goals that are his fault._

    I did?

  66. Callyman, didn’t read the books so was completely shocked. But I like shows that aren’t married to main characters. Creates a lot of tension that anyone can get killed.

  67. Olga Folkyerself on

Sabres found out that there’s money in changing jerseys every year. The pick ugly ones so that no one complains about changing them so often.

  68. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_What happened to just ignoring Kenneth?_

How could anyone ignore THE Kenneth?

  69. Thank you Manny for not knowing what a grandma slice is, selecting “peppers” instead of “pepperoni” and overall ruining my naughty approval to order a post dinner pizza pie.

  70. MDZ horrible on first goal, later, out of position again, caused Kreider to hook, resulting in Florida PP

  71. How nice of John to report exactly what the Rangers are going to do while standing next to the Tampa bench. Not that it’d make a difference, but.

  72. You mean like that time Geraldo Rivera Drew American battle plans in the sand on international tv?

  73. Game of Thrones is one of the more clever shows that doesn’t have that “main character” that fans can feel assured they have “plot armor” and are pretty much invincible. The Walking Dead is more or less like that too, but it’s not nearly as subtle or effective.

I haven’t read the books either, so that caught my completely by surprise too. I’m with you though, I like that about this show. If they kill off the imp though, that’s when I might have to reconsider haha

  74. Nash being stationary resulted in losing the puck behind the net, and J. Moore or whoever it was should have passed to a cutting MotZ instead of trying to force the puck through several men.

  75. Not bad news that a team in front of the Rangers is losing. Devils aren’t that good this year.

  76. Just noticed that Bishop’s career GAA against Rangers is going up tonight. He came in 4-0-0, 0.89, .970, two shutouts.

  77. TWD is also great. Probably stretched the Governor plot out a bit, but I like where they left off.

  78. IGravy, really? if the rangers lose tonight and the devils win they are 1 point behind the rangers.

  79. Eh, the whole Governor subplot with him attacking the prison twice was pretty redundant, and it made even less sense the second time around. The mid-season finale felt like watching the last season finale that we should’ve got. The flu epidemic storyline was fantastic though.

  80. IGravy, better be worried because there in the rangers division and if my memory serves me correctly are undefeated this year against the rangers.

  81. No way we’re scoring a clean goal off Bishop. Going to need a rebound, crashing the crease, dirty goal if we want to tie this up. Or maybe a PP goal?

  82. The Devils aren’t making the playoffs.

The flu thing wasn’t bad, but almost felt more like filler in between the Governor plots. I didn’t mind his backstory episodes. I like that the whole group got split. Should make for some interesting storylines.

  83. As improved as Brad may be on the PP, he still turns the puck over at least once every opportunity.

  84. Sam heard that post! Man, fantastic chances there.

I’m not fond of the Governor character. But I love where they left off, the rest of the season should be intense. When does the show come back anyway?

  85. Yeah, probably not going to happen. Bishop too good tonight. Lightning shot off the post and in, Rangers off the post and out. Will take something odd.

  86. Daenerys Targaerean is way hot in real life. She’s a brunette. But she was dating *SETH MACFARLANE*

  87. Thanks Orr.

How about Staal showing some onions there! Good PP even though they didn’t score. I have a feeling we’ll tie this up.

  88. “Yeah, probably not going to happen. Bishop too good tonight. Lightning shot off the post and in, Rangers off the post and out. Will take something odd.”

NYR scoring a goal in any way is odd.

  89. ThisYearsModel on

Can’t feel bad about this one however it ends up. Other than for 9 seconds and a moron call by a ref, we have dominated.

  90. I hate Seth Macfarlan. He’s Gross. I just asked Mrs. Manny when the last time Seth MacFarlan had a protein shake was!

  91. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

    _Lundqvist really good tonight._

Hanka Hanka has played well tonight.

  92. That’s *AWESOME* Carp!!!!! Thanks for putting yourself out there for us. I know it can be difficult being emotionally vulnerable. You were brave.

  93. Another big PP coming up. Had several excellent chances last time, they gotta come through here.

  94. I think I like Sean Penn! He does good stuff for people. But he did tough the Jewess Scarlett Johansen.

  95. Carp, that’s great! He has always seemed like a great guy. I look forward to Charping with him, it should be fun. Thanks!

  96. Theron was pretty great in Arrested Development. I had no idea she was capable of being funny.

  97. Can’t really fault Brassard there — he knows it’s going to have to be something special.

  98. Refs missed two obvious penalties. Pouleot was pulled down during the PP and the Zucc trip by Bishop. Do they need a 3rd referee?

  99. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

The Rangers played with a chip on their shoulders tonight.

  100. boxcareddiehospodar on

derrick stephan is god awful. how is even on the first line!!!

jt miller is no better than d>moore/boyle or hagelin!!!!!!!!

  101. Very good effort all around. Nine seconds of ugh! Have to tip your visor to Bishop. He was very good. The PP looks really, really good.

  102. Sabres winning by distracting Flyers with those uniforms. There needs to be an investigation.

  103. “Give Miller a game, let Step watch one, get his arse in gear.”

I like this in theory, but, what happens when it’s time for Step to rejoin the line-up? Miller loses again. Not fair to the kid.

  104. Another post for McD, and he’s all over the ice, up and down. He may lead this team in points before the season’s over.

  105. Coos, have you lost your marbles? Everyone in the rink saw Richards changing at the end of a 2-minute PP shift. Everyone but Nash, that is. I understand that it’s all Richards’ fault all the time, but surely you’ve got a better one than this?
