Rangers-Maple Leaves in review

Thoughts:New York Rangers v Toronto Maple Leafs

1) The Leafs — is that the same team that played in the Winter Classic? — really put up zero resistance, and the Rangers sure appear to love playing against them. The Rangers, a team that can play with anybody if allowed to skate, allowed to use their speed, just sped right through the neutral zone all night, right through the Toronto Ole’ defense.

2) That said, you have to take what they give you, and if the Leafs were giving, the Rangers were taking, skating, feet moving from very early on when Chris Kreider backed them off, and Rick Nash followed up and backed them off some more, skating like he has very few times this season. Both of them were going, but who wasn’t? Ryan Callahan, much better in his second game. Derick Brassard, Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello of course, Carl Hagelin. All of them, really. I mean, give them credit for playing with some energy and some purpose. Just that, there was a completely different level of fight for ice than there was the night before in Pittsburgh.

3) … and yet another example of how mediocre the East is, and why this team is going to be in the middle of it down to the end.

Toronto Maple Leafs play the New York Rangers4) I don’t mean to be a complete downer. Give the Rangers high marks for a much better effort, especially defensively in their own end, and in being committed to not turning over the puck repeatedly, as they did in Pittsburgh. Then  again, Pittsburgh is a team against which you are forced to take care of pucks, forced to defend, and the Rangers didn’t do either.

Toronto Maple Leafs lose to the New York Rangers 7-15) Kreider. Ya gotta like when the kid went grill-to-grill with Dion Phaneuf (again) and then, as soon as play resumed, he absolutely flew up the left wing for a breath-taking goal (even though the defense, again, was non-existent). That kid must be dynamite during the 4-on-4 OT. Oh, wait. … But then he had to drop the gloves for the first time in the NHL, and while it was a wrestling match more than a fist-fight, high marks for him again. And, I’ve been telling you what a bear this kid is. He overpowered Phaneuf, a big and very strong man.

6) Cam Talbot. He had to make some big saves early, and he did, and he was solid throughout, even though at times he didn’t get much work. Can the Rangers have two rookie-of-the-year candidates? And, yes, this was a different game, and yes, the Rangers play better in front of him — in general terms, I think teams tend to be more defense-conscious in front of backup goalies — but Talbot has delivered, too, and given the guys in front of him some confidence. I think it’s silly to think he’s going to usurp Henrik Lundqvist as the No. 1. But Talbot has been the better goaltender to date.New York Rangers v Toronto Maple Leafs

7) The Rangers really, really have had a lot of deflection goals this season. Or is it just me? Two of the better changes under Alain Vigneault: the power play, and guys to the front. Not mutually exclusive.

8) Good for Dominic Moore, and for a lot of the guys who haven’t been getting in on the offense much, especially those who play a dirty game every night.

9) Has Benoit Pouliot really figured it out?

10) Do people really want to trade Michael Del Zotto for Jake Gardiner? Or anybody for Jake Gardiner? I mean, did you see that guy try to defend? I think we saw, too, why Nazem Kadri might be available. Toronto Maple Leafs play the New York Rangers during the 2nd period

11) I was going to lead with this, but the more I thought about it, the more insignificant this move for Daniel Carcillo seems to be. Part of my job is to have an opinion, and I always think it’s better to first-guess than second-guess. My first guess was that it was a mistake. Yeah, it’s almost no risk whatsoever (a seventh-round pick). And yeah, this clown will probably have a fight in his first game at the Garden and win over a bunch of fans. But to me, this is a guy who didn’t just step on the Rangers logo, he urinated on it. It’s like the Donald Brashear signing again, and you know what? If Brashear wasn’t such a washed-up has-been, he might have been accepted. To me, I wouldn’t want Carcillo on the roster if it was my team, and from what I’ve heard from you guys, you don’t want him either, not after that garbage he pulled with Marian Gaborik. …New York Rangers v Philadelphia Flyers

12) But I will add this. I haven’t seen a lot of Carcillo since he left Philly. The few times I saw him with Chicago, he stunk. The only time this year I saw him with L.A., he stunk. He is one of those repeat offenders — so don’t cry about the Patrick Kaletas and Matt Cookes if you’re going to cheer for this guy — and he’s a bad penalty waiting to happen. So the penalty killers might get more ice time. The Rangers, who desperately need some anti-softness in their lineup, didn’t do this from the seat of their pants. They scouted the guy for a while, did some research on his persona and character. They thought it’s worth a shot. They should know better than I. We’ll see.

13) The irony of the whole thing is that it was the whole Carcillo-Gaborik event a few years back that forced the Rangers to toughen up, to get Brandon Prust in the Olli Jokinen trade, to man-up as a team. Carcillo’s disgusting mugging of Gaborik eventually made them the rugged, all-for-one team that slapped up 51 wins, 109 points and a trip to the Eastern finals in 2011-12.

  1. If I am not mistaken I don’t think Talbot could be rookie-of-the-year since his 26th birthday occurred before Sept. 15.

If Asham could still skate they wouldn’t need Carcillo. But apparently he can’t.

  2. “I was saying some really dumb stuff,” Kreider told The Post. “I probably just should have kept my mouth shut and played hockey.”

  3. the time distribution for the forward lines were pretty darned even. really…. 15-17 min for everyone

  4. Cacca Carcillo –hopefully, he’s not a Carcinoma for this team. Accurate observations Carp…saw a headline in the NY Times: *Great Lakes Brace for Carp*…hope you stay right here (except when reporting on Rangers vs. Detroit, Buffalo, Toronto, Chicago…) Another Sather special trade…read about these chemistry experiments with methanol gone awry with disastrous, tragic results? Let’s hope he stays off the ice, as some of you note.

  5. Don’t forget Nash missing an empty net from 1 inch away or Boyles forcefield interfering with the goalie

  6. Nice review Carp!

“Leaves” fans are having the same day we had yesterday.

Good win and two big points!

Carcillo remains a piece of Carcillo.

  7. If Carcillo plays, especially after a game like this, I won’t be watching any more. To think some actual hockey player might have to sit… Ugly day in Rangers history.

  8. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I heard Sather reached out to Chris Simon and Hannibal Lecter before making the Carcillo trade.

  9. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

The Lecter deal didn’t work out because he wanted guaranteed top six minutes.

  10. Nice review Carp! Good bounce back from the debacle in Pittsburgh and like it or not, a 3-2 road trip…not bad!
Carp is right. However we may bash the GM and the coach, they are good and experienced hockey men and I am quite certain they did not grab Carcillo without a good deal of thought. This team needs to demonstrate that they will not tolerate anyone taking runs at our skill guys. I only wish someone had gone after that A-Hole Zack Sills on Friday night. He looked like Fedoryk out there taking runs at our guys and NO ONE responded. If Carcillo can add this dimension, it will be worth the price.

  11. Is cool when Carp, Kenny Alvert and the Boneheads all pick the same three stars.

    Great review Carp.

  12. Carp – Not to nitpick, but Gaborik was the guy who dropped the mitts first, after the two exchanged a couple of gloved punches. In fact, he had no business at all trying to tie up Carcillo, especially after he moved him away from the scrum. Was still lame what Carcillo did, but but that was a can of worms Gaborik smashed open.

  13. And for what’s it worth, the Rangers should NOT trade Michael Del Zotto least of all for some bum from Toronto. Kadri is vastly overrated and Gardiner…please! It seems to me that when MDZ is in the lineup, the team plays better. Good, solid, homegrown guy who can skate, shoot and has a mean streak. If there is a personality conflict between AV and MDZ, it needs to be fixed. You don’t throw a guy like this away. The fact that the Rangers have hesitated in pulling the trigger on a trade indicates that they realize this.

  14. I agree. I’m on the keep MDZ train now. I don’t think he brings back anything that even closely resembles his presumed potential.

    Gardiner is awful.

  15. CARP,

What happened to respecting THE Kreider?!

It’s THE Kreider! Especially after a game like this!!!

  16. Stranger Nation on

_However we may bash the GM and the coach, they are good and experienced hockey men_
    really? says who?

_t seems to me that when MDZ is in the lineup, the team plays better_
Umm…no they don’t play better unless they are playing the Loafs are some other non-physical team. MEZ does not like to be hit, period!

  17. That’s actually true. Cam Talbot is not eligible for the Calder Trophy. But The Kreider is. Really makes the award extra meaningful!

  18. Great review Carp. I could not agree more with point #11. Sure this team needs some onions. but see if you can find a tough player who can play. I realize they don’t grow on trees, but do you have to right for one of the two or three bottom of barrel players in the league?

Do Sather and AV want so badly to build a team built on speed and skill that they would let their skill players (with the exception of Krieder) spend most of their shifts looking over their shoulders and trying to avoid being hit?

We have the WBM, the Nash-o-meter and maybe we need toughness rating, the Onion factor. If it was a One to Ten system with 10 being Milan Lucic and 1 being….Oh, what the heck: Rick Nash, we would have four, maybe five players at a 5 or better and one of them is a Hobbit.

  19. Stranger, disagree. MDZ can take a hit and can certainly dish them out. And he has the speed to join the rush and be a credible offensive threat. Still remember the play he made in the 7th game against Washington when he dumped Ovechkin on his a**, passed the puck, joined the rush and buried the rebound which proved to be the winning goal.
His old man was a football player and I have no doubt he instilled that toughness into his son.
    Keep Del Zotto!!

  20. Love The Kreider, but it just feels like he’s been around, up and down, for too long to be eligible for the Calder. Give it to a pimply teenager.

  21. Carp: Totally agree with your Cancerillo take. I hate those types of guys and none would ever be on any team I’d build (if I could build a team).

They should be legistrated right out of the game.

Another lousy move by a lousy GM. Worse, he saw the impact Prust (and Rupp and Bickel) had on the team’s fortunes so why did he allow this team (and last year’s) to have none of that type of player?

What the heck is this man thinking, anyways?

  22. Good morning, boneheads!

    Nice review, Carp.

Good win, everyone contributed. Including Toronto. In fact, the Leaves was the main contributor. All you needed is to see that woman sitting right behind Randy Carlyle. Her facial expression was priceless.
Carp, right on the money about Jake Gardiner. I’ll keep MDZ, thank you. By the way, apparently goaltending has been the strongest part of Toronto’s season. I didn’t see it yesterday.
What I especially like is that this team can really kill you with their speed. It’s not only Kreider and Hagelin, it’s also Brassard, Pouliot, J. Moore, McD. Refreshing to see.

Do not underestimate this win, folks. Toronto, along with Detroit, are two teams that everyone pretty much penciled to win the wild card race, leaving only 3 spots for Metropolitan Division. I’m not so sure it won’t be 4 and 4 now.

On Carcillo. I really don’t want to talk about it too much. I’ll just say this: I root for everyone the very moment they start wearing NYR sweater. Always have. So far, I find it very difficult rooting for him. And that is an understatement.

_So far, I find it very difficult rooting for him. And that is an understatement._

You will not have to root for him for long. He will likely see a maximum of ten games in a Rangers sweater this season.

_I think teams tend to be more defense-conscious in front of backup goalies_

There is not one shred of evidence to support that.

  25. Really? I dig *Liturgy*. How did I miss that? I’ve got a freaking membership so I get flooded with info but never saw word of that. #stinks

  26. Agree regarding Carcillo, but it’s unfair to say Sather could have gotten this guy or that guy before. The situation changed when. Dorsett got injured.

  27. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Boyle scored an unnecessary goal last night. _All teams would take Boyle for their 4L_, except for the teams that have tougher, more skilled and faster 4L.

  28. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_The situation changed when. Dorsett got injured._

Boyle scored. I agree with Gravy. The world is coming to an [BOOM]

  29. Kenneth, all you do here is keep mocking people. You haven’t come up with anything of substance that could even remotely contribute to this blog. Unless you count your childish “Hanka Hanka” a contribution. If you it were up to me, you would last on this blog shorter than Carcillo will last in NY. Luckily for you, it isn’t up to me.

  30. He’s still a piece of Carcillo. Can’t even begin to describe my level of disgust. Even though Gabby and Pruster aren’t on the team, we’ve betrayed them and our logo.

  31. Hank n Boyle for JVR n one of their goalies. Then cut Richie. Trade Nash n Giardi for big Buff n Kane. More cap space a banger on D. More grit and scoring, plus gets us younger. Add to either package as you like. Shouldn’t be that hard to do.

  32. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Do explain how I mocked you by stating that Carcillo will likely play a maximum of ten games in a Rangers sweater.

  33. boxcareddiehospodar on

wow so we are all back on the moore/stephan/hagelin bandwagon?

they will pull a houdini act when we play Columbus.

Regarding Carcillo, can’t stand him but, if he sticks up for lundquist and a few other players let him play.

What he did to gaborik was a joke but, as usual no one stood up to him.

  34. Does anyone remember what Carcillo tweeted some time ago about a woman he was dating? If Avery said that, he’d be decapitated by the league.

  35. Don’t know about MOMA, but you can’t bring prostitutes to the NY Botanical Gardens. You can’t lead a horticulture.

  36. Rob in Beantown on

The MoMA is awesome. Fun fact: if you have a SUNY college ID, admission to the MoMA is free. My ten year old college ID stays in my wallet forever, except now it’s my “get into the MoMA for free for life” card.

  37. MOMA began as one floor of the Rockefeller NYC family home. Nelson called it “Mommy’s Museum.”

  38. Totally, Rob. The fine folks at my school decided to hand out college ID’s without any dates on it. It will NEVER leave my wallet.

  39. Good morning, Sally!

My bad. Talbot is indeed a rookie but, I think youse are correct, ineligible for the Calder.

Mister, agree on DZ for Kadri, but doubt that could happen. Big hell no to DZ for Gardiner.

  40. Oh yeah, we’d have to add, but I’d reasonably add. Like + Fast or Kristo or a dude like that? Have to.

  41. Also, last night was great for continuing to get my 2 year old into paying a little attention to hockey. She likes when they score and hug and I refuse to call her in to see a goal against so good guys 1st or early 2nd goals are awesome.

  42. And a spot-picker like Carcillo will, for example, get into it with Rinaldo, and one of his linemates will end up having to fight or avoid fighting Rosehill.

  43. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Great review!!

    Lmfao@#5 and “breath taking”

I’m neutral on carcillo, if he puts the effort into playing for us he did in Philly against us, I’m ok.

_Today, you’ll see Cam Talbot’s face on http://NHL.com stats page as league leader in save % at .938. His 1.66 GAA is 2nd in league_

    That is because his team plays better in front of him than Hanka Hanka. (;

  45. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

Carcillo trade just shows you what an empty set sather is … he is always reaching for the players who tormented the rangers in the past. Drury ? Gomez ? Mc Carthy etc..

shows lack of depth and talent , if you can’t beat them .. well Beat them.

  46. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Fighting for your teammate is what makes this sport leaps and bounds above any other!!

  47. Booby, You mean Boyle wasn’t already exposed this year when Chara, Bieska beat the crap out of him? I thought he was exposed long ago with a bunch of ass kickings i’ve failed to mention. I think Redden was/is tougher than him.

  48. from what I’ve been told, they don’t think Asham can do it anymore, and more importantly, that he doesn’t want to do it. … and I wouldn’t want to come up here and fight, either, knowing I’m going back down.

  49. not being a good fighter does not make you soft, Boyle is plenty tough. he just not a good fighter.

  50. The D did not play that well in front of Talbot last night, though they have supported him well in the past. He made some great saves and is a superb backup goalie. Lucky to have him, credit to mgmt. for keeping him instead of the merely decent Biron. Still need Lundqvist to recover his consistency though if this team is going anywhere.

And, no, the Leafs did not look good at all last night, but for once the Rangers had something to do with that. And they didn’t need a bum like Carcillo to do it either. Wishful thinking on my part, to be sure, but I’d like to see that thing stay in the press box, with the forwards looking up to ask themselves, “I’m going to sit for that a—-le? Better hustle.” Then Hartford, then Worcester, where he’d be more appropriate for the audience.

    Holy Carcillo!!!

    One dimensional @ $825k

I’d still rather have a team leader, excellent PK man, good defensive player, and pay the guy more. What’s morale and work ethic worth?

    Undo the whole Prust situation.

  54. Prust wanted every last dollar, just like Avery before him. the Rangers made both there careers, and they left. Good Riddance!

  55. Notice how all the Toronto Homers had a good game? Dom Moore, Nash, Girardi, DZ, Talbot…

Some of them were clearly savin that energy Friday Night so they could burn up Toronto in front of family and agents.

I don’t want to trade MDZ for Gardiner, per se, but it seems that is all they can get for him. And he is buds with Mac and Step.

What we really need is an actualized version of what McIllwraith should be. Mac ill Wrath. But DZ will not bring that return. I don’t think we are prying Byufuglien loose. But they might get a RH shot. Maybe Bogosian, Sarich, Klein or Sjustr. There is not a lot out there.

I would love to have JVR on this team, and I think he’d be a better fit with Nash and the K. So I would trade Stepan, and MDZ or some combo for him. I know it is blasphemy to some of you, but I would do that in a heartbeat. I think JVR is a significant upgrade to Stepan.

Trade Brady Bunch Skej or someone for the bruising Dman we need.

  56. Don’t look now but Cam Talbot… LEADING THE LEAGUE IN SAVE PERCENTAGE on NHL.com.

Trade Boyle now while his value is up. He should have had 3 last night. JT Miller should play over Boyle. Always.

  57. Won’t be any reaction from me other than, “Call me when it’s over.” I can’t stand watching that stuff any more, even between my fingers. If it’s Miller who has to give way, well, I can’t even begin to fathom that one.

  58. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Feel free to mock me all you want! If you have never been in a situation where others willingly put their physical well being on the line for you, then you do not and will not understand my previous comment so don’t waste anymore of your pretty little brain cells trying to figure it out!

  61. Wicky rules. Don’t *mock* him. He’s the resident enforcer and tough guy! I got his back too. And I am a Violent Gentleman.

  62. But, seriously, Carcillo should not crack this lineup. Let Miller center the 3rd line. Please.

  63. One time Ken said something dumb and Lloyd and Vino both stood up for him. Looks like he wasn’t appreciative.

  64. I suspect you guys may be overreacting a bit to Carcillo. he will play in the type of games he is needed. I think it is good to have a reckless player on the Rangers. it will keep the other team honest.

  65. That is a fair point, bull dog. He will be reckless and a distraction to opponents. Can he stay on or around the line without crossing it?

  66. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I like the Carcillo trade. They needed someone that will stand up and kick some assen. I hope Miller can stay in the lineup….sit Ritchie Rocket

We haven’t had an obnoxious player since Sean Avery. I’m happy we have Daniel C.

  68. here’s a legit question. why would two serious Cup contenders and recent Cup winners give this guy away within about seven months? asked a similar question with the Ryane Clowe disaster last season.

  69. Godwin’s Law Violation ahead, apologies in advance, as I note Boneheads everywhere gradually getting used to the idea of Carcolini being on the home team and then, as they lust for war, supporting him whole-heartedly before he even hits the ice. He and Sathler will distract the enemy, they dream — unlike the soft team that just waxed the Leafs — and lead us into the promised land, alternately supporting and purging teammates as we annex the Sudetenland and walk into the first round of the playoffs unopposed. He’s good for us! cry the Boneheads. Gaborik and Dubinsky were never true Rangers anyway. With Carcolini, we will rule hockey for a thousand seconds!

  70. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carp – I’d rather Haley and Bickel get called up. Rangers must see something still in the tank. Clearly, even with a healthy Dorsett, something needed to be done in terms of toughness. The pens game exposed a marshmallow soft team….

  83. Carcillo is a punk who can barely play. It’s a really dumb move when guys like Tootoo and Konopka were available for nothing.

I’m not sure why you trade a guy like Rupp for Powe…Waive Powe and then sign a guy like Carcillo. From bad to worse to worst…

  84. With all due respect to the 9-man group of experts who selected the US Olympic Squad, the goal The Kreider score was exactly why he should have been picked for the US team. World class, as in WORLD CLASS speed and burst that will keeps team honest and wary.

BTW, Bryan Burke is a boorish bully pig. His comments on Bobby Ryan were undignified and unnecessary and the equivalent of kicking a guy when he’s down. What an effing jerk.

  90. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I think a big trade is brewing. Sather and his brain(trust) were watching last night in a sky box….penny for their thoughts….

  91. They were also heavily scouting Colorado-San Jose. Sather’s always sitting upstairs with his lieutenants, though.

  92. I don’t like Carcillo one bit, hate his type, would rather just use Haley, etc, etc … but he can play a little bit of hockey. Not much, certainly not enough to play in the league without his “toughness”, but a little. Two double digit goal seasons in his past.

  93. I had heard that Haley was injured as well. It even raised my curiosity when Asham came up over him. I didn’t think he did too bad last season. he actually played with some sense and skated well. Guess we blacklist players and keep them buried in Hartford now.

  94. (And I hate the Avery comp. He was a straight-up antagonist, not a threat to every opponents career every night he dressed.)

  95. Carp @ 2:53 – Yup, can’t wait for that one. Wonder what percentage here work to excuse it when it inevitably happens.

  96. though Islander fans will tell you Avery deliberately kneed DiPi in the head to concuss him and give him health issues. He was the epitome of health prior to that. And Cup bound. don’t forget Cup bound.

  97. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carp – which one of his lieutenants is the “shaker” not that I think you’d know….

  98. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

The camera was on slats only a minute yet get got up to tinkle three times during that minute…

  99. 1). If they include The Kreider in a trade without bringing back a Crosby type player, I’m finished with the Rangers.

And this time I mean it.

Are teams, under this current CBA, able to trade for players such as Richards and then use a compliance buyout on that player? Or does would team that originally signed him (the Rangers) be the only one allowed to use the buyout option?

Pardon me if this was already asked and addressed before, but I don’t always pay too close attention when it comes to contract talk.

  101. Also pardon the poor editing in the post above. I was just wondering if Richards would be a viable rental trade.

  102. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

James – I’d rather trade Hank. Tam is going to be a superstar and Hank would net (pun not intended) a good return.

  103. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Anyone give any thought to the fact that Talbot could be trade bait by March?_

I have already suggested that. He is signed through next year and could be sought by a playoff team in seek of a goalie upgrade.

  104. Cross Check Charlie on

Nobody has any problems with Dorsett, but have a lot of problem with the Carcillo trade. Carcillo takes stupid penalties? Yeah. Dorsett doesn’t? Dorsett sticks up for his teammates. Carcillo won’t? Carcillo is basically the same player. He’s a better fighter even though I put as much into that aspect as some others. And, he’s not a goon that can’t play. He’ll fit into the fourth line in place of Dorsett just fine. He’s in a contract year so he was only picked up to replace the injured Dorsett. People scream how easy it is to play against this team – that they are too soft. Well? Carcillo is the type of player you want. The only reason for all the negativity is because of the Gaborik incident. And, if you remember, it was Gaborik that dropped the gloves first.

  105. Good afternoon all! Last night would have been so much more enjoyable if not for the carcillo news. The only slim silver lining I can find is that Carp and finally agree about something on Avery!!

Mainly though, I agree Carp, we didn’t lose anything. But I don’t think we gained anything worthwhile either.

Some folks are saying don’t just hate on him cause of the Gaborik thing. The point is, many of us have despised him WAY before that!

I know trades happen all the time and teams have to get use to former “enemies.” But I can’t imagine how Cally and some of the other boys will handle this.

I’m still sick. Mama rant over….

  106. Cross, have to disagree…..the Gaborik incident was one in a long line of many. He is a goon, I hate him, and always will. And have talked to many fans who agree.

Not saying you’re not entitled to your opinion, but I just strongly, and respectfully, disagree.

  107. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I for one am tired of the NY Cream Puff Rangers. We should welcome Carcillo with open arms. If he can help the team what’s the problem?

  108. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_I for one am tired of the NY Cream Puff Rangers. We should welcome Carcillo with open arms._

For those craving *toughness*, Carcillo fits the description. Do not complain. Embrace.

  109. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Mama – hope my post draws not your wrath ;). Just tired of my team getting pushed around.

  110. e3 I’m not factoring preference. I just think with Hank locked up Sather could very well see him as the best asset available to acquire a top 6 at some point..Certainly wouldn’t put it passed him.

  111. Since Talbot is an RFA at the end of his contract, there is a chance he may be more valuable in a trade. More so to one like Edmonton.

  112. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

There’s a big difference between toughness/sticking up for teammates and nut job/d-bag players who have no qualms hurting people.

Please don’t compare Dorsett, Bickel, Prust, etc. with the likes of Carcillo, Raffi Torres, and Patrick Kaleta.

    Huge difference.

I hope Carcillo leaves this team as quickly as he came. Find another tough guy with some integrity.

  113. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Since Talbot is an RFA at the end of his contract, there is a chance he may be more valuable in a trade._

    He is a UFA, bub.

  114. Do you really believe anybody would give up much and take on Hank’s contract? You can fit in 15 Talbot’s for 1 Lundqvist.

  115. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If Tam is a legit number 1, and I think he is, one of them should be traded. I’d send Hank. But I have no say, obviously…

  116. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Cap Geek – not disagreeing. I just think Tam is better this year and will continue to be better…,,David Duval, world number 1 ranked golfer, Pre Tiger’s ascent, still in his prime…..and POOF…..he fell faster than a bolder off a cliff…..

  117. What RBP#2 said; not all middleweights are equal. Long long road from Prust/Dorsett to Carcillo.

  118. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If Carcillo helps the team, and I think he will, we should all stand and cheer.

  119. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I think goons in todays NHL are a waste of a roster spot. the guys that are more valuable are the crazy ones, who can give cheap shots and not have to answer for it. Carcillo fits that mold. now if you get rid of the instigator rule, than goons can be helpful. to say any of them have integrity is not being realistic.

  122. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

If *toughness* is not *toughness*, then what is *toughness*? This leaves quite the quandary regarding *toughness*. *Cromulence*

  128. I’d say if Nash is selected or being considered for the Olympic team, he can probably be traded????

  129. Let me go on record now, before it happens, that I do not support Sather’s next moves: Trading for Patrick Kaleta, Matt Cooke and Zac Rinaldo.

  130. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Nash has done nothing to earn that spot._

Stepan has done nothing this season to earn his spot.

  131. Carp: That just proves what I have felt all along. These national writers/commentators such as McKenzie reach a certain level and stop watching games. Too busy on the phone, texting or emailing and not watching tape.

Like I said before, as a USA hockey fan, I am rooting for Nash to make Team Canada.

  132. Rangers need to get rid of these pathetically soft players:

    Nash – 5 hits in 26 games
    Stepan – 19 hits in 43 games
    Richards – 14 hits in 43 games
John Moore – 31 hits in 41 games
    Stralman – 40 hits in 42 games
Del Zotto – 34 hits in 33 games
Dominic Moore – 37 hits in 35 game (low for a checking center)

And also get rid of Boyle because he sucks.

  133. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

S.Nation – Richards will be running at Hollywood Park during the Olympics.

    Neighhhhhhhhhhhhhh Wilber

  134. And get a real coach to coach the Wolfpack. Gernander blows, nobody can score on that team and they cannot win games without Talbot.

BTW when will AV finally realize that Lundqvist is garbage and Talbot is his best goalie?

  135. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

For the record, a Stepan “hit” is accorded when he brushes up against an opponent.

  136. “For the record, a Stepan “hit” is accorded when he brushes up against an opponent.”

lol, same goes for 98% of Rangers’ hits.

  137. The only thing I’ll say about Carcillo is that I’d rather him be the punching bag than any other player on the roster.

  138. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Rob – Troy Ache Man and Joe “my daddy got me this job” Buck are the biggest homers ever re: Cowboys. Perhaps next year for the Gmen as they need to regroup and figure some stuff out.

  139. Carcillo?? Is Sather ma…. oh wait, he’s both mad and senile.

Did you all know about this:
http://mustbepop.net/ It’s a role playing game where people can pretend to be athletes or celebrities. Apparently half the Rangers ‘team’ is there, including Lundqvist, with the person who plays Lundqvist threatening to kill his daughter because it ruined their ‘storyline’.

What kind of low-life would do that??

  140. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Troy is unbeliable. Cruz could catch the ball in the middle of the field and he’ll say he moved before the ball, pushed off, and he didn’t get both feet in bounds after the catch.

  141. Romeo wrote,

Rob – the penguins announcers vs Troy/Buck: you decide. Wish all 4 would spontaneously combust.

  143. Paul in sunrise on

Agreed ken at clinchers. Same for cally as he is often injured and has not played enough to earn spot. But he fills a certain role and is tough and fast. So I understand his selection. But Nash and Step are ???

  144. I can’t watch the Rangers. Hope the Jackets steam roll them tomorrow. Rangers franchise is a farce.

    Same to you, Latona.

  145. Rob in Beantown on

The Penguins announcers are the worst by far. They actually sound like dudes I would _still_ hate even if they weren’t blatantly smack talking against my favorite team. Aikman and Buck are probably decent humans, even if annoying ones

  149. Hockey’s Future has NYR at 27th, with CAR, NJD, and PHI behind them. WSH is at 25th. Bodes well for the Metropolitan division, doesn’t it?

Maybe NYR should try to tap into a less scouted prospect pool like DEN, NOR, GER, LAT, etc. I think SJS has had some success with German draft picks over the years, and I think VAN has recently taken several Danes. Extensive knowledge of one or some of those prospect pools could make a difference; might even be able to take a real good prospect late in the draft simply because other teams are unaware of them. I understand you want to have your scouts watching teams in CAN, USA, SWE, RUS, etc. as well, but Central Scouting and even TSN figure those guys out pretty well.

  150. Yeah no, Kenneth. Won’t ever do that for this farce of a team.

It’s the truth, Eddie. And yeah, that is not happening. JArmo and JD would laugh hysterically then hang up the phone in Sather’s ear.

  151. Stranger Nation on

Yes the Pens announcers are homers, but we have the two lackeys who think they are doing the national broadcast of the Olympic Selection Show for the Prairie Hokey Companion.

  152. Papa, and others, McKenzie made it clear that the “guess” team he tweeted wasn’t necessarily who he thought should be on the team, but rather who he thinks will be on the team. He has a pretty good idea what’s going on up there. He’s probably going to be about 90+ percent right with his “guesses.”

I hope Nash does not make team canada and it gives him time to think and really get PO’d about it and plays like a man possessed after the break!

  155. Good point Carp. McKenzie reporting, not advocating. My bad.

The thought of Nash being rewarded over other deserving players makes me sick to my stomach.

  156. @TSNBobMcKenzie

On D, Boyle or Seabrook could displace someone on right side; Giordano or Marc Staal options on left side.

    I do.

I was on the fence re: Gnash trade. I didn’t want Dubi to go. Would have preferred Hags and Artie once consummated. However, in hindsight, the trade was, as my lil angel would say, not good. If he can be moved, I’d do it.

  162. Eddie, agree. If he can be moved gotta do it.

Thank God Sather didn’t also give up The Kreider in that deal.

  171. Excellent write up Carp! I have said for a while that you can’t just give DelZ away. You hang on to him and then deal him at the deadline if you have no intention of resigning him after this season.

Also, there is Pittsburgh, Boston, and the rest of the East. We are in the lesser of all four divisions, and the lesser of the two in the East, but After Pittsburgh and Boston, it really is mediocrity.
