It’s Go Time! … Islanders at Rangers

Game 36.fishsticks
Islanders at Rangers.

… Or Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals for the Islanders.

The Rangers have played two consecutive shootouts, a skills competition win over Calgary and a tiddly-winks loss to the Penguins.

They are 1-3-2 on this nine-game homestand, which winds up with Minnesota Sunday and Toronto Monday. That is followed by a five-game road trip after Christmas.

The Islanders have lost 13 of their last 14 games — what happened to that team that was supposedly on the rise to the Eastern Conference’s elite — and Jack Capuano remains seated on the hot chair, though honestly, when does GM Garth Snow’s seat heat up?

Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal, assuming his neck is feeling OK … he appeared to be fine during the morning skate. J.T. Miller, called up from Hartford Thursday, goes into the lineup in place of Arron Asham, who was sent down with Dylan McIlrath Thursday. Taylor Pyatt is prucha’d.

Miller skated on a line with Brad Richards on the left and Benoit Pouliot on the right this morning. Rick Nash was with Derek Stepan and Mats Zuccarello, while Chris Kreider drops to a line with Carl Hagelin and Derick Brassard.

  1. Talking to oneself is very underrated! My picture’s fine, 4ever.

So who wins this battle of mediocrity? Our mediocre, .500 team? Or Tavares and his awful team?

  2. Maloney: “John Moore and Hags looked like they CARED ENOUGH to win the hockey game.” Indictment handed down!

  3. Say what you want about the actual jerseys (not to mention all the outdoor games in general this year), but that MSG commercial was pretty great

  4. Jeff in South Dakota on

At least, with Center Ice, I get the “MSG” feed tonight — but likely it will be the away feed.

  5. Let’s get this show of low quality hockey going!

Here’s hoping I get to see one hit before I fall asleep!

Nabokov doing what Hanka has been unable to do so far this season.

  8. Cally, radio is waaay behind the tv tonight, but at least Maloney knows enough to butt in during lack of rapid action, giving LaGreca free reign to run the actual show.

  9. Pyatt…what a great signing by our amazing GM…D Moore is another great one. Too bad Dan Lacouture wasn’t available

  10. What the matter? Out of gas? Deflated? Spring charge off? Can we at least finish 1st without of goal against? Too many questions – too little hope…

In order for a penalty shot to be called, the player must have possession.

What likely wasn’t a penalty resulted in a penalty shot goal.

  12. Great defensive play, not even a penalty. Had it been a penalty, it should have been a penalty shot.

  13. Terrible call, but there was a point in my life where I was confident that Hank would stop that. I expected a goal there.

  14. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Had it been a penalty, it should have been a penalty shot._

    No.

  15. (iii) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must have been denied a reasonable chance to score (the fact that he got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the foul was from behind and he was denied a “more” reasonable scoring opportunity due to the foul, then the penalty shot should be awarded)

  16. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck_

It was clearly the opposite. Not a penalty shot.

  17. Stranger Nation on

Zucc had a horrible power play – lofts a shot into the goalie’s logog off a clean faceoff win and then standing still pass to McD with Grabner on his arse

  18. Kenneth, he was in front of McD and clearly would have had possession if the “penalty” didn’t take place. Just admit you’re wrong and move on for once.

  19. I don’t get some of you…before Hank was the greatest…now, he signed new contract and all of a sudden you turn on him?

I don’t like his big contract, but I don’t expect Hank to suddenly pitch shutouts every game just because he got a raise.

  20. Rob in Beantown on

If it was a penalty then it should have been a penalty shot. Just like the pens should have gotten one two nights ago

  21. Rob in Beantown on

Hank stops those with regularity before, though. Now I have almost no confidence in him to stop those

  22. True about the Pens game, Rob. I was wrong because I thought it shouldn’t have been since he got the shot off.

  23. That official is just going to get away with that too. It’s just going to be forgotten tomorrow, and he’ll keep officiating.

  24. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Just admit you’re wrong and move on for once._

There is no right or wrong in this instance. Since the call was based on whether the player would or would not have gained possession in the referee’s estimation, the call is subjective.

  25. no tv..am i reading right? we gave up two shorties? to cal ckutter no less. was that all on same pp? man he still world talent but i have started to wonder about hank…i hope they were highlight reel shots.

  26. Agreed regarding Hank. Goalies are probably around 50-50 to stop a breakaway, but he always seemed to be 2 out of 3. Not making those big saves as much lately.

  27. With all seriousness – what to do with Hank, by inertia everyone still consider him great with temporary slide, but it’s too long and painful. But definition of greatness in goalies is saving even in a hopeless situations, not to mention having less then few softies. This team, handicapped on scoring, goes nowhere with his all season and current play.

  28. “Virtually every penalty call is subjective, aside from shooting the puck over the glass.”

As we saw last year in the playoffs last year, that one is too.

  29. As awful as they are hank really pissed me off there. I usually support him 90 percent of time but make a save on grabner and clutter buck for god sakes.

  30. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

    _so sick of the king_

Only now you are sick of Hanka? I was sick of him after his numerous postseason chokes.

  31. _There is no right or wrong in this instance. Since the call was based on whether the player would or would not have gained possession in the referee’s estimation, the call is subjective._

I guess he could have had a seizure and missed the puck.

  32. Stranger Nation on

That penalty shot being awarded was an absolute disgrace.

Grabner’s first goal since opening night – HAH!

Rangers score on PP without Buckey and nash

    hmmmm

  33. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_I guess he could have had a seizure and missed the puck_

He could have received a phone call and been distracted. (:

  34. Hank is normally a reliable goalie.

This year, he’s the complete opposite. The team can’t count on him like they used to in the past.

Why? Was it Torts’ system? Maybe Hank’s not getting laid? Maybe Baby Lundqvist cries all night long and keeps him up?

  35. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Boyle may be credited with the goal.

Lloyd Braun may have been correct.

  36. CC, I think the top team teams in both divisions go against the wild cards, and the 2nd & 3rd place teams in both divisions go against each other.

Which basically means if NYR make it, they’re going against the Caps….again.

  37. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Sam and Joe don’t know how Hanka got the first one or second one.

He’s a goalie. That’s his job. That’s why he is being paid an average of $8.5MM beginning next season.

  38. Stranger Nation on

Like the new lines – Richards with two fast skaters
Really like Miller in the lineup – makes smart plays with puck in Dzone

  39. See, I don’t get that. Hank gets killed if he doesn’t stop 2 breakaways, but when he makes 2 great saves in a row, it’s just status quo and simply what’s expected of him since he’s being paid so much. He can’t do any right no matter what he does unless he puts up 3 or 4 shutouts in a row.

  40. so he called a penalty shot because he “thought” McD hit his glove?

you would think litmus test would be more before you award a Penalty shot

  41. hard to decide among so many quality candidates but would you say that girardi and hank are having the most shocking terrible seasons on all the team?

any insights as to why bith – once pretty dependable – are basically liabilities this year?

  42. I meant the one where it was going behind the net, but he missed that one too.

By the way, that was another horrible clearing attempt by Girardi which resulted in a goal.

  43. …” when he makes 2 great saves in a row, it’s just status quo and simply what’s expected of him since he’s being paid so much”…
ABSOLUTELY! Particular for HIGEST pay and universal title of BEST GOALIE in the world.
    Here is a “proof”!!!

  44. Slatsko Folkyerself on

You’re all falling for the biggest Sather fallacy there is.

Paying someone more money DOES NOT make them any better.

  45. Well using that logic, then we should never ever praise Hank for a great save ever again. He should pitch shutouts every time out, no matter how we play defensively in front of him, simply because that’s what his contract dictates, right? Never give Nash credit for a nifty goal ever again, either (although it’d infinitely help my case if Nash was actually playing lately). Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get that mentality.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

Goal is soft to glove side. First NHL goal with first NHL point on the assist. Is there a more typical goal that we could have given up?

  47. Boyle driving to the net. Its his only move, but it works sometimes.

he is making a few checks tonight too.

  48. Stranger Nation on

Wow – Hags playing tough behind the net with Martin on last sequence. Dude was getting slapped around and kept at it. Love the effort

    “Yes, Sather Claus”
“Did you make a lot of saves last year?”
    “Yes, Sather Claus”
“Well, here you go then…. Mer-ry Christmas!”

  51. Worst team since the 04-05 lockout… Hands down. This team has NO backbone… And Nash isn’t the same player he was 5 or so years ago….

  52. Even if Hank was decent it makes no sense to have a 8.5M goalie on a team with this many holes and needs.

  53. Olga Folkyerself on

    Tomato trying to ketch up

  54. Goaltenders outside the crease should be fair game. Hags turned away from Nabby thinking they would collide – if contact was legal, Hags prob would have scored.

  55. Doodie Machetto on

Kreider and Pouliot have traded places in the box score. Pouliot with the goal, Kreider with the offensive zone penalty.

  56. Carp– His playoff performance was deplorable last year. For a man of his size, I’m sorry… The guy’s knocked off the puck so easily the last couple of years.
I’d trade him for Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixon and a #1…. Oh wait….

  57. Doodie Machetto on

Someone compared AV to Renney. No way. No way does a Renney-coached Rangers team give up 3 or more this often.

  58. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

I am relieved that Boyle was not credited with that Dorsett goal.

  59. Never thought I would tremble with fear at just about every shot thrown at Lundqvist. Just terrible. And McD and Snow Angel looking very shaky. Nash with 20 lb weights around his ankles. Richards back to contract buy out form…

Nice time to be a Rangers fan.

  60. I have an idea… Lets bring rusty back, trade for John mitchell…. Kidnap Prust…. Offer Anisimov unlimited goal celebrations to defect from Columbus ….. And offer Dubinsky an 8 ball.. We’ll use Nash only 4 on 4 and power play. Who’s with me?

  61. Nash is making some nifty plays that go unnoticed. He’s worth every dollar of the 3 and a half million they pay him. (s)

  62. Softish softie softer såft.

In good news we’ve scored three and it’s only one period left

  63. Doodie Machetto on

Started with the bacon. Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

We had steak for 2 med rare and for 3 medium. I was on the med rare. Both were cooked perfectly. The filet portion of the steak was probably the best filet I’ve ever had. The strip portion was delicious as well. For sides, we did fries, hash, and creamed spinach. Both potatoes were amazing. spinach was adequate.

Seriously, the whole thing was really great. Bacon was probably the best part.

  64. Doodie Machetto on

I think it’ll be either Nielson or someone scoring their first goal, like de Haan or Strome.

  65. This team is a skidmark. Seriously. The Isles have lost like 14 straight and we’re going toe-to-toe with them. It’s a joke. Any borderline playoff teams blows the Isles off the ice. Especially at home.

  66. AV’s two PP units:

    Stepan, Nash, MotZ, Richards
    Brassard, Poulet, J. Moore, Girardi

    This guy’s a clown.

  67. If it were up to me, the only player of those eight I’d have had out there is Brassard. Brassard, MZA, Kreider, and McD sounds a lot better to me than either of those groups.

  68. Doodie Machetto on

Richards is the worst forward on this team. Stralman is the worst defenseman. Lundqvist is the worst goaltender.

  69. Who is assigned to sweep up the piles of sand in front of Stepan’s and Girardi’s lockers when they take their skates off?

  70. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

None of the 4 goals allowed were even strength. Two breakaways, One 5-on-3. This is hardly the fault of Hanka Hanka.

  71. Doodie Machetto on

Been saying this ever since Sauer got hurt: we need another right handed defenseman. Stralman had a career year last year but he has been just terrible this year. The fact that Girardi has struggled has only emphasized how bad we are at right defense. And we all know how bad MDZ has been playing the offside. Or the left side, too. Just bad.

  72. Stranger Nation on

it is a lame excuse because NYR is horrible, but the refs have completely controlled this game

  73. Kenneth get a freaking clue

U pay your goalie 8.5 mil against clutter back and grabner and strait goal he can make a freaking save or two. I usually defend him not tonight. He was piss poor.

  74. Doodie Machetto on

stranger, its especially lame since when they gave the rangers 3 PPs in the first period, we gave up two shorthanded goals.

  75. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Brian Boyle didn’t take the puck away. It was given to him.

  76. Why would Bran Bole waste his energy fending off Fishsticks if he was just going to tap the puck to them anyway?

  77. I don;t care if they weasel a point out of this dreck. When you are losing at home in the 3rd period to the worst team in hockey, you suck beyond any hope of redemption.

So embarrassing and infuriating. Richards now is worse than he was last year. Nash is invisible. Lundqvist looks like Doug Soetaert.

    Set SATHER on FIRE.

  78. Carp

I am sorry. But Cal Clutterbuck has to be stopped by Hank. No excuses. Ten times out of ten. Horrid. Without a second thought,

  79. whatever, Stemmer. I agree it could/should have been stopped. You don’t blame the goalie for giving up a short-handed breakaway.

  80. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Our friend Cam Fowler scored tonight._

McIlrath had his face pounded by McGratton. We will always have that cromulence.

  81. eddie eddie eddie on

    he speaks german in french

    lions fear him

light moves slow compared to him

    stay thirsty my friends

  82. Carp

I’m asking to be banned. Do me a favor. I may say crap tonight to get me in trouble. Between this team and some morons on here

  83. 1) I’ve never been a huge Henrik fan and I thought signing him to that deal was stupid (yet necessary), but it’s hard to make saves when you have no forward support on defense. This system doesn’t work with these players. Torts his a lot with his defensive style and Henke just had to clean up the mess. Now it’s a lot of mess but he can’t clean it all up.

    2) I read people saying that Nash wasn’t like this in Columbus, but if you watched him when he played there you’d realize that this is th same way he played in Columbus. He’s always been a soft player, although he’s playing even softer now that he’s head a few concussion. He always played his best hockey against crap teams when he could dangle and nobody would touch him. When he played against tough teams like the Blues or Sharks, he turtled because guys would hit him and he didn’t have space to dangle.

  84. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Have to think about pulling Hanka at some point during this power play.

  85. NYR power plays feel like they last 30 seconds. Power plays for opponents feel like they last for 5 minutes.

  86. Doodie Machetto on

I’ll give the refs this: they’ve been consistent. It’s not like they swallowed their whistle after calling it tightly. They’ve continued calling pretty much every miniscule infraction.

It sucks, but at least it sucks consistently.

  87. Kinda sad that the Fishsticks could afford to have someone out of the zone when NYR have 6 skaters.

  88. We had a better chance to stop that breakaway with our goalie pulled. There was actually some hope there.

  89. 1st goal since the 1st game for Grabner, 1st PPG for Vanek, 1st regulation win in 17 games for the Islanders…lots of 1sts and lots of streaks broken tonight against us. Awesome

  90. Getting real sick of this team. Nash is a lazy bum. Lundqvist is playing terrible. We have 2 fast skaters and a bunch of small slow skaters.

  91. Grabner. Who hasn’t scored since Pearl Harbor. No, excuse me, since Gettysburg. But no matter! Because all he has to do is come to MSG and turn into Steve Yzerman. Do you know how many times I have seen this movie since I have been alive?

I am so angry I cannot see straight, Repulsive and wrong: Fire everyone.

  92. Olga Folkyerself on

Keep buying those tickets, jerseys, and sandwiches, folks. Dolan thanks you for your support.

  93. Rangers playing to the level of the opposition. TIme for the AV-watch to begin. He hasn’t convinced enough of these guys to try hard enough often enough, and that’s his job.

  94. I remember trautwig saying there is a perception that this team Is an above 500 team, and there is a reality that they are a 500 team. Well the reality is the rags are below 500. Not blaming injuries on this one.

  95. Rob in Beantown on

This team is an absolute disgrace and so is the coach. Burn it to the ground. Hire Laviolette. Traid everyone.

  96. Olga Folkyerself on

Ahhhh. The post game. Which excuses do they use tonight? I can hardly wait to hear them.

    Grabner wears the broadway hat.

  97. Norm, I think that’s a totally bogus aspect of a professional coach’s job. If one of us doesn’t show up to work “motivated”, or if we don’t “try hard,” we get fired. However, for some reason, these guys aren’t trying hard under AV. It’s definitely an issue.

  98. There are those who will say that Henrik was not directly responsible for 3 of the 4 goals, but he is not paid to be ordinary.

  99. They can’t score AND they’re softer than baby crap… I never thought I’d long for torts. In my estimation, he had this collection of players pegged pretty well and played a defense first system. Vigneault either won’t or can’t adjust.. Dude needs to go. But this is all on dumbass Sather. As they say…. “The fish rots from the head down.”

  100. Nothing like home ice advantage! Hard to believe where Lundqvist has sunk to this season, but there are just too many people on this team that are mailing it in. Sather has to go! PERIOD!!!

  101. Our record might not show it yet but we may be the worst team in the league

Guys are playing like they believed their parents when they said it doesn’t matter if you win just have fun

  102. eddie eddie eddie on

But, if the rangers go on a tear and win 38 in a row….we will all sing a different tune…

  103. Every beat reporter has a responsibility to tell it like it is, for as long as it takes to have the message saturate this market:

For Sather to have a job for life, given his deplorable record over 13 years,
    is a crime against nature.

That should be the theme that underpins every single story written about this franchise for the foreseeable future.

  104. A big part of a manager’s job, at any level of management, is to motivate, to sell belief and to get production. AV is not getting that done, you can’t fire the team, and there’s nothing to trade. Looking more and more like a mismatch at this point.

  105. Rob in Beantown on

_Without extraordinary goaltending this team is in the lottery!_

YES. Hank masked so many Sather mistakes in the past. Now that he isn’t its all visible for the world to see

  106. Been watching the Rangers for years and have seen many different flavors of teams. This bunch is the most passive and passionless I’ve ever seen. And those of us who called for the Rick Nash deal should be ashamed of ourselves. This guy looks like he’s incapable of playing on the big stage.

  107. leetchhalloffame on

FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE Sather (begging on hands & knees).

  108. No, a slump is when you are underperforming.

This team is garbage through and through. So this is no slump. This is what is.

  111. Used to be Dore33 on

I don’t post anymore, but I still read cause I think Carp is a good writer, but I really don’t watch the games anymore and I never thought I would say that being a former (priced out) season ticket holder. But this sport is horrible. From skills competition, to defensive, boring, god awful hockey. This sport is in bad shape and no light at the end of the tunnel…when the left wing lock or trap or whatever you want to call it is the norm it does not show the skills of the players…my god the devils with that roster still win games, horrible hockey…there are too many rule changes, too many lockouts, too many people doing a bad job…Now to the Rangers…a team filled with 3rd and 4th line players, a superstar goalie who may not be such a star with the smaller pads and not in a defensive minded system may not be as good as we thought…Slats – I have nothing good to say about this person…he has done nothing to take this team over the top and when you listen to the players and fire a coach who had a team playing over their heads that shows me he has no clue…if dolan or slats REALLY care about this team then Slats needs to go and some new, younger people need to be put in his place…I don’t believe they care that much…they have priced out most of the real fans, I have friends including myself who have not been to a game in years because we refuse to pay the outrageous prices…It’s a sad day and I hope for you loyal fans who still care about this team the very best but I don’t believe it will get better any time soon. The sport needs an infusion of star players like the days of Gretzky, Yzerman, Lemieux, Mess, and many of the greats from that era but this style of hockey will never allow it…I won’t even get into Bettman…that’s a nightmare all in itself…good luck to all. Peace out!

Bill peedo, JoeM, and tout-wig……talk about a scary 3-some

    Doc – “ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”

  117. This is stating the obvious but…

No wonder why these guys aren’t playing hard. The head coach has said on multiple occasions that he wants to play a better style of hockey but doesn’t have the, ahem; “personnel” to do so.

Is that supposed to motivate the team? At least Torts, when asked about the team as a group would always say that he liked the makeup of the team. We may see the end of Vigneault sooner than we thought. Torts will be in his glory.

  118. To those who think firing Torts was a mistake, of course, your opinion is valid as mine, but I disagree, here. Reason being, just look at how beaten up some of the carryover players on this roster are, starting with Girardi, playing the worst hockey of his now precipitously falling downside career; and Callahan, who, after Girardi, was the second most prolific shot-blocker on the team, last year.

Coaches who get their players beaten up black and blue blocking shots in the regular season, have, conversely, taken their team into the post-season in a condition of running on close to empty. Poor AV, not to make excuses for him, but to his credit he does have to deal with the remnants of the physical train wreck Torts left behind.

This is why, young as this team is, it REALLY needs to begin a rebuilding program. Too much of the core of this team is just flat-out mentally and physically whipped!

  119. eddie eddie eddie on

robbie bonfore – werd up yo…..the torts is gone, long live the torts….i bet the nucks miss the playoffs this year…

  121. When Dolan told the team in camp that this years key was Hank, they thought he said this years key is to tank

  122. This team is like a prospeective Derby horse who becomes a stakes horse, then an allowance horse, then a 20 thousand dollar claimer who can’t even beat other 20 thousand dollar claimers.
