A new post for a nice, snowy (icy?) day

Just because I figured the comments were  piling up in the previous thread, and since I had really nothing to add today, here’s a brand new fresh post. Clean slate, grab it.

It’s been a while since the Rangers didn’t play for two straight nights, hasn’t it?

We’ll be back at it tomorrow with the whole game-day sha-bang. Until then, be safe and stay warm.

  1. There is simply *no* sport that suspends and punishes their players like the NHL. James Neal’s suspension cost him $112K or something like that. It’s massive. The NHL should publish the dollar amount so other sports stop crying that they don’t do anything.

  2. “BCATHGE on right now in AHL outdoor game. Best hockey I’ve seen in a while! NHL network.”

That’s because you’ve been watching the Rangers.

Neal got 5, Thornton 15. Both suspensions are 50% of what the perps should have received. The NHL still does not wish to truly clean this stuff up.

Thornton should have got more IMO. He basically assaulted Orpik from behind. It was a slew foot, and reckless punching to the head. Gloved or not, clearly he did damage.

Neal’s act was certainly cheap and cowardly. He should have got double digits. He loses a lot of salary because he gets paid a lot. It’s all relative.

You want to deter? Make the threat of suspension loom large. Image in you got 15 for your first offense, 30 for your second, and a season for your 3rd? Might think two or three times before you hit someone from behind… or basically perform an assault and battery on ice.

  5. I think the league would have given a non enforcer type way less games.

But what Thornton did is awful. Horrid.

    Nice to see you Gab!

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya Manny!
Violent Gents is toying with our emotions… I want to Kronwall someone over there until I get my shirt!

  7. I think Thornton would have gotten a longer suspension if he didn’t play for the Bruins. Remember Jeremy Jacobs is a Bettman favorite.

Neither of those plays were ‘hockey’ plays. Orpik never had a chance to defend himself, and Neal is very fortunate Marchand wasn’t seriously injured.

Both acts were disgusting, and don’t belong in the game. Neal is going to have to answer a few bells when they play Boston again…

  9. Hello Heads!!

They really have to invoke a team penalty in conjunction with the personal penalty. I think the team should not be able to dress a player in the suspended players place for the duration. Then the player is accountable to the team as well as the league.

Be out if the game tomorrow.

hmm… Interesting approach SeeDubbb. Kinda like a red card in soccer to a degree. Though that leaves the entire team shorthanded for the remainder of the match. Imagine if something like that happened? yeesh.

I do agree that penalties for egregious acts should be harsh. Look at MLB’s penalties for positive PED tests. Big time suspensions. I’d like to see that kind of definative, hard line consequence for vicious acts that take place on the ice.

  11. I’ll say it again, make the suspended players team play a short bench for the duration of that players suspension.

Hurt the player in the wallet, hurt the team during the games the player misses.

Team has one player suspended, dress 19 instead of 20; two players suspended dress 18 instead of 20, etc. No exceptions.

Probably has to be Collectively Bargained so it will never happen.

  12. My approach to combat flagrant fouls that injure: the player that commits the foul cannot play while the injured player is out of the lineup. Once the injured player returns, whatever suspension that the league imposed will begin.

So, if the player is out one month, the player that caused the injury is out for one month plus.

A career ending injury would end two careers (as in Sauer, for example). The crap would stop very quickly. If you don’t want to do the time, don’t commit the foul.

Obviously, the NHLPA wouldn’t hold still for this, which raises the question as to whose interests are they protecting.

  13. what a joke, 15 games? if you really want to stop this crap, suspend for the season, and tell him if he wants back in next year he will have to have another hearing.

Anyone going to a game at the Newly transformed Chase bank in coming days?

    I mean Chase square garden.

I mean Madison Square Chase Bank.

    Chase bridges.

    Bank at Chase.

    :)

  15. SeeDubb, it makes to much sense for the NHL brain trust to even consider. The run the league like the WWF.

  16. Olga, I’d stay away from former Rangers, 1 too many and before you know you go from defending Cup Chamos to round 1 upset.

  17. Romeo, that’s the Pens gaming the system. Predict 10, act like its not enough, you’ll get 15.

  18. I don’t understand why players who savagely injure other players are allowed to return before the injured player returns, if ever. Why that goon in Toronto still has a highly-paid career is a mystery to me? I grieve and mourn for Sauer, and for the cost of his career-ending injury to the Rangers.

If the league really wants to put a stop to the thuggery, all it has to do is mandate suspension = time lost punishment. Until then, it just goes on and on.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. But free refts do.

wait for it……. waiiiiiit forrrrr itttttttttt……

Ironically, our players getting concussions the last three seasons were also the bigger guys on the team; Sauer, Boyle, Staal, Nash

  21. Robby, to easy to game that system. Playoff series, lose a 3rd liner to a hit by a stud defenseman, the Penguins will sit that 3rd liner for the rest of the series keeping said stud DMAN out as well .

  22. My rady better put anofa rog on the fiy-ah before rights go out and we arone in the cord and dark.

  23. I rike that song goes Rouie Rouie rah rah, Rouie Rouie. I rike it rong time ago, stirr rike now. Groe frigure.

  24. You guys like Game of Thrones? If you could speak one language from that Show/Book which one would it be?

  25. I would choose Valerian. Probably because they make the most cool stuff and seem hella powerful. But English seems to get you by.

  26. If you guys could be one race or ethnicity from Game of Thrones what would it be? What family would you want to be part of? Remember you can date within your family back then.

  27. Rut oh, rights out, propary roose bratery powah on ipad soon. I be ronery with out my rads to tawk too. Hope not to rong I be in dawk. Bright side, maybre I get rucky with my rady.

  28. If you were making a game show based on Game of Thrones called Game of Shows how would the Game of Shows be formatted?

  29. Mist edrie, Terr your rady you by her bronde wig, pray for a ritle bit as a bronde. She might rike it too!

  30. Seriously, I’m rehearsing for a part in a local production of the Sand Pebbles. I’m working on my dialect. How do you like it so far?

  31. I’ve got my clipboard, text books
    Lead me to the station
Yeah, I’m off to the civil war
I’ve got my kit bag, my heavy boots
    I’m runnin’ in the rain
Gonna run till my feet are raw

  32. Starting Monday, a loaded week of college hoops at the Garden. Rangers may as well wear boat shoes on the ice.

  33. Good point, Papa Bear –

How about suspending the coach, when his team goes head-hunting like that? That would rein in the coaches’ maverick players, quickly.

  34. “These back to backs can be tough, Sam. Rangers are bound to come out a little tired tonight.”

“That’s right Joe, but with a few days off, they are bound to come out a little rusty.”

    Excuses R Us

  35. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Let Brassard center Miller and Kreider 15 + minutes a game. Ignore *all* mistakes. Let them play, learn, and grow together

  36. It’s an absolute joke and a half that POULET skates with the first-club morons while MILLER-TIME and MONTE KRISTO light up the second-rates.

F the salary and bring up the guys who could possibly be good.

We know POULET is a waste. We don’t know yet of the other clowns are useless. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t.

  37. coos, took a day away from the sad-sack Rangers today and went to Iona basketball. Not much better, 102-89 loss against St. Bonaventure. Too slippery even for a Walter’s pit stop.

  38. Is anyone watching this farce of a Pens – Red Wings game?

Crosby high-sticks his own player and the Wings get called for a penalty.

    This league is sickening.

    Bush. Bush league.

  39. This is crazy! The site won’t let me post under a different email address! Who’s in charge of the filters for this site?! FIRE THAT GUY!

  40. Carp – saw that score. I had thought that the early season Kansas game would help them against the “locals.” When they won at Fairfield by 10, I thought they might be on their way. No such luck. I saw they had a ton of turnovers and their 7 footer plays limited minutes. Next, Dayton (out there.) Rotsa Ruck. :)

  41. Yeah, hopefully better results than the last few. That would be fine. I’ll be with and trying to feed my six year old, so I’ll do my best :)

Any place in particular that would be best?

  42. Just saw your Iona video, Carp. Cluess’s comments could easily come after a Ranger game, point by point. Sounded a bit more like Torts than AV, only with a grudging smile for the Press.

  43. Gravy, just inside the door for Section 110?

AV used a timeout the other night. Saved it and saved it and saved it for 33 games, then used it.

  44. Never call CARP’s work “bush-league”!

CARP is a beast. A tour-de-force of Rangers blogging.

    Nothing less.
