It’s Go Time! … Blue Jackets at Rangers

[polldaddy poll=7641207 align="left"]
Game jackets
Blue Jackets at Rangers.

The reunion of the former Rangers and former Blue Jackets is the story line, but tonight’s game is really about the Rangers’ need for a victory, and having to get it with a depleted lineup.

Big, tough 2010 first-round draft pick Dylan McIlrath — aka “Diesel” aka “The Undertaker” —  makes his NHL debut on defense.

Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov make their Garden debuts as ex-Rangers, though Marian Gaborik is out injured. Other ex-Rangers with the Jackets include Fedor Tyutin and team president John Davidson

Rick Nash, Derek Dorsett and John Moore also play their former team,  against their former team, etc. Derick Brassard, the third player acquired in the Gaborik deal, is out with a bruised, ahem, posterior. Other ex-Jackets with the Rangers include Anton Stralman and associate coach Scott Arniel.

McIlrath replaces Justin Falk on defense. Benoit Pouliot and Taylor Pyatt go back into the lineup for Brassard and Ryan Callahan (left knee MCL sprain, 4-6 weeks). Marc Staal (concussion) is also out indefinitely.

Henrik Lundqvist starts his season-high fifth straight game in goal. Vezina Trophy winner Sergei  Bobrovsky is out injured for Columbus so, hey, another backup goalie against the Rangers tonight — likely Curtis McElhinney.

Don’t forget to vote for the Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left.

  1. Let’s Go Rangers!

    Welcome back, Artie and Dubi!!!!

Why can’t we have someone like Burke in NYR management???

  2. Sioux-per-man Fire Up the Diesel on

    Fire up the TRUCK Boys!!!

    Diesel running!!!

Lets hope the boy is ready!

  3. I heard him get interviewed by Kenny and then there were the quotes from Portzline yesterday…I’m just kidding…

He said he expects a warm welcome from the “blue collar” garden faithful…

  4. many years we are leading into the holiday break, then barely make playoffs maybe this will be opposite, end up first at the end of the season

    i can dream

  5. That was I good interview with Dubi, but the blue collar fans are so few and far from the ice that you can’t hear them.

  6. Ice Truck with the Diesel? Will see of his RPM.
As for bragging/threating Duby and sheepish Arty, as far as I’m concern for next 60 min of hockey they are pure enemies. Period. …and should be treated as such!

  7. Stralman consistently lets opposing forwards get a step on him, making any 2 on 2 rush into a 2 on 1. But come on, Hank, gotta get a piece of that. Ridiculous.

  8. hideously hilarious!!!!!! Talbot should have started, our 8.5 million dollar goalie has turned into a pumpkin.

  9. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Loss tonight and I think there’s some movement before our next game. Dubinsky and company coming in and making Sather look bad will make Sather act and that’s scary but also kind of exciting since the guys I care about most aren’t likely to go._

Yes, the GM is going to make rash decisions because his team lost to a team consisting of former Rangers that he traded. Pigs fly, too.

Aside from the marginal call-ups or Mashinter for Beach trade, no movement will happen.

  10. iDoodie Machetto on

I’ll repeat what I said earlier: this is not a good team. I’m glad I won’t have to pay for playoff tickets.

  11. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_This new ‘defensive system’ is working well._

Sather thought he had a goalie that could hide the flaws of his defense. Instead, it was the coach, his system, and the defense that were hiding the flaws of Hank.

  12. “Instead, it was the coach, his system, and the defense that were hiding the flaws of Hank.”

Umm, it sure looked like Hank was hiding a lot of flaws under Torts too. And Renney.

  13. matty"WeShouldWearPinkPanties"Boy on

Kenneth, I actually partially agree with what you said. Still, with Torts and his system here, Hank had some tough shots fired on him, but this team is not defending well at all.

  14. iDoodie Machetto on

Carp, Eric can still afford tickets? I figure with how many hot dogs he owes you he will have to take out a second mortgage.

  15. Does anyone on this team have confidence? Hank needs to come up with a big save because this team just gets deflated.

  16. I must say this is the worse this team has looked since the year before the 2004-2005 lockout. I was against signing lundqvist to a long expensive contract. I am against giving Callahan and Girardi long expensive contracts but we all know Sather will do it. The future is very bleak folks. Rangers better start drafting better the next few years or else Sather will be trying to buy ufa’s again like he did before the 2004-2005 season.

  17. Not on that particular goal, but the first one. It’s a good shot, but he needs to pick up the team.

  18. This franchise is a joke. Next time I see Sam rosen. I’m telling him that one isn’t lasting a lifetime.

  19. Stepan – you have to hit the net on those. don’t pick a corner….

99% of the time it results in an odd man rush the other way.

  20. Man, I didn’t realize how bad of a skater McIlrath is. It must be those injuries, because he was a very highly ranked skater in the draft…

  21. Easy scoring…
It looks like if the former coach lost this team, the current didn’t find it.
Just bunch of so called hockey players with very little hockey in them.

  22. I’m not being crazy here: Fire AV and bring in MESSIER.

    And make trades too.

    The works.

    Who cares at this point.

  23. matty"WeShouldWearPinkPanties"Boy on

And the people in the club seats are on their cell phones playing games….none probably realize that the guy who just scored used to play on our team AND he has more goals than the guy that came here that was suppossed to be so great.

Actually, Dubie and Artie, combined, have 33 points. What’s our ‘superstar’ have???? 11???

And, which players have heart?? Oh boy…….

  24. iDoodie Machetto on

McIlrath takes himself out of position to take a penalty on a big hit amd we get scored on. Hope the bench is comfy, Dylan.

  25. Wow oh boy wow is this a bad night. If my potato and leek soup doesn’t come out as an A+ I might just get super mad and yell a curse or something.

  26. Good comment by Dave Maloney on the radio:

“Fedor Tyutin for Zherdev…you think they want that one back?”

  27. matty"WeShouldWearPinkPanties"Boy on

Sam: “Rangers need to change something”

Joe: “Can they change their GM????”

  28. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Hank’s got a hole burning in his pocket. He’s got millions to spend, that’s why he left the game early.

  29. iDoodie Machetto on

So now that he’s got a new contract so it can’t be weighing on his mind, what’s the excuse?

Dave said it best on radio “the rangers continue to be SO easy against in the defensive zone.”

  30. Can’t say I (or many of you) am surprised. It’s the perfect Ranger script….Vezina caliber back up goalie dominating the Blueshirts, former Rangers scoring… we’re missing the AHL guy with his first career goal or the Cam Janssen type with his first goal since 2003 (oddly enough, also against the Rangers).

Good for Artie though…I do wish he did the rifle cuz this team could use some disrespect….don’t want Dubi to score because he is overpayed and every GM in the league makes that trade so he can stop whining. Admittedly, we could use him to teach our team something about playing with some snarl and giving a full effort especially because you can’t score for sheik.

  31. Cool it on McIlrath; he is not the problem. This team (and I use that term loosely) is pathetic!!

  33. Okay, that was actually a pretty good goal. Great shot, great second effort. That’s the key word, of course. *effort*

  34. matty"WeShouldWearPinkPanties"Boy on

Is there one person at MSG thinking the Rangers can come back here? Psychiatrist needed, if so.

  35. leetchhalloffame on

Torts would have had McIlrath escorted out of MSG & waiting for the train from Penn Station to Hartford by now.

  36. Yea were not coming back that’s obvious, and it should also be obvious that hank is in major decline.

  37. As if under Torts they always came prepared to play… plz!

And i would still argue that Torts had much better roster than this one.

  38. isn’t it funny how if this was happening with messier as the coach the story would be how in over his head he was as a first time head coach but yet with vigneault the story is how bad the roster is?

  39. matty"WeShouldWearPinkPanties"Boy on

All I have to say, is this is another team with “big players on defense” that we can’t get through. It’s really not a hard concept. Fill your team with midgets or big men that are soft, you will struggle with bigger teams. Hard to believe a GM with 30 plus years in the business doesn’t understand that. Instead, playable toughness was let walk, traded away, and an afterthought for this team.

  40. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_If Torts was here, McIlrath wouldn’t even be on the team._

_Calling up McIlrath is a desperate attempt by AV to bring some toughness to this team. Not going to work._

    _He already looks overwhelmed._

  41. What is interesting about this is the “have nots” pushing around an elite franchise team. According to my latest issue of Forbes Magazine, the Rangers are the second-most valuable franchise in the NHL, after Toronto. Columbus, that expansion franchise dreck of an inspiration on the part of our benighted Commissioner, ranks 30th. So what’s the Rangers excuse?

  42. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Brian Boyle. That’s the essence of Brian Boyle.

$1.7MM ain’t what it used to be, ain’t what it used to be.

  43. “I don’t have the personnel to play my system.”

    Good coach?

sure… he says it like it is. If GM fires the old coach because GM thinks the style of the team isn’t offensive enough and then GM hires offensive minded coach and gives him this type team? What do you expect the new coach to say?

  44. That was one of the most pathetic misses I’ve seen from Bran Bole.

Good coaches create a system to suit their players. That’s what Tort did. AV hasn’t. I still think the 11-12 team played way above their heads, but at least that was the kind of team that you could build and improve upon. From the very beginning of the season this team has looked really poor to me.

  45. “isn’t it funny how if this was happening with messier as the coach the story would be how in over his head he was as a first time head coach but yet with vigneault the story is how bad the roster is?”

Interesting, tf. I kind of agree.

  46. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Talbot’s *toughness* gets those posts and crossbars to help him.

  47. I know it’s a big “IF” but if Talbot can keep Columbus off the score board for the remainder of the game I think the rangers could come back in this game. If Rangers get the next goal I can see them riding the momentum.

  48. Do the Rangers have enough guys with zero goals to make four? Moore, Pyatt, McIlrath, Stralman (does he have one)?

  49. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_and yet another stinker from Henrik Lundqvist_

He no longer has the defense-first systems of Renney and Torts to protect him.

  50. Say whatever the hell you want, and there are many levels of defensive and offensive problems here, but if No. 30 doesn’t stop the puck, the rest doesn’t matter.

  51. Someone here said Steps might be having problems at home. If so, it’s either with his mother or his super.

  52. also because i know you guys will appreciate this… me and my wife went shopping at Corner Furniture today. we sing the commercial all of the time.

seems like they have great deals and a really nice staff! we mentioned the commercial and they seemed embarassed by it

  53. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

You were right about The Undertaker not being ready.

  54. “He no longer has the defense-first systems of Renney and Torts to protect him.”

Not saying Henrik’s been good this year, but Henrik still bailed those teams out just as much as they helped his numbers.

  55. Radio is far behind the play tonight, but I still will listen to Dave and Kenny while watching.

  56. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

so now a third stringer will shut us down.

what’s next? the trainer will score an empty netter?

  57. Nice of Girardi to let that CBJ walk out in front and then to give the puck back to him in the corner.

  58. eddie eddie eddie on

posts and crossbars are often a result of good positioning….

I’d play Talbot next game and keep playing hum until he loses….

  59. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I’m watching on the dvr, so first period just ended…

8.5 mil…I know it isn’t all hanks fault, but 8.5 mil with so many other holes on the roster

Mcilrath…like the aggressive step up and then the flattened the guy in the crease…the goal in between the 2 hits sucked badly tho.

He looks ok, not great IMHO, understandably seemingly nervous..hopefully he settled down

  60. Sioux-per-man Fire Up the Diesel on

    Chance for Boyle……….

    – same chance I have on my $400M lottery ticket :)

  61. Wish they’d change the rest of the Potvin chants to Sather chants. One Potvin a game is enough.

  62. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Boyle just displayed his *toughness* on the bench. Looks like *impotence* to me.

  63. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Brian Boyle, 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike *toughness*, or *toughnesslike conduct*.

  64. Sounds good 3 x Eddie. My signature cocktail would be the Richards…a half an ounce of canadian whiskey for the price of a double…served with hay

  65. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

The height of irony, Richards stays till 2022 and Hank is bought out after this year….

  66. I know I’m beating a dead horse but I didn’t want the rangers to and I wouldn’t have given a 32 year old goalie a 7 year 8.5 million dollar contract. That contract his going to be brutal in a few years.

  67. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

TommyG – I’m right with you. Tam Calbot played well… bad game……Hank had 1 really good game (stars) and that’s been it – not enough

  68. That’s the kind of stuff I don’t understand. Stepan makes great recovery play snatching the puck back from Johansen, and then chucks it off the boards where it’s picked up by a Jacket. WHY?

  69. Like WTB Girardi. Seriously. What the BYFUGLEIN is the thought process there. “I have the puck, so let me chuck it into the mass of Jackets and now offside Rangers!”

  70. I’m sure some flat-earthers will think this is the *out of control* Dubinsky who takes *stupid penalties* but anyone who understands hockey knows he’s doing this because he still loves us and wants to help. #17 forever.

  71. McIlrath might not be ready but that can be said for practically all of the Rangers. Fire Sather from every position he has with the Rangers! Banish him to western Canada, never to be heard from again.

  72. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Zuccarello is all over the place, and he’s actually a threat to produce a goal. .

  73. Good idea, BigBadVinny, but let’s send him somewhere he can’t escape from. I’m picturing Sather being wheeled down the Canyon of Heroes chomping a cigar on the way to MSG like the return of Napoleon.

  74. When McKenna gets hurt, my neighbors kid will grab his baseball glove and catchers shin pads and get in goal to shut them out in the third. I guess he can leave home the orange rubber Burger King puck

  75. ThisYearsModel on

I will say it once again………If I were paying the garden prices to watch this dreck, I would be livid. They are being completely outworked.

  76. Have to admit, Wilbur is trying. Even threw a couple of ineffectual checks, but is more in the middle of it all, including some offensive crease work.

  77. Does anyone know what channel the Yule log is on? Might be a better option than watching the third period.

  78. There is a guy who should be the GM of the rangers. I despise Dolan that fat ugly cheese burger!!!!!

  79. JD – “You’re lucky to have Sam Rosen.” JD thinks he’s the Old Man of the Hills, telling the unwashed what’s good for them.

  80. Carp tells us more interesting tidbits in snippets than SalmonJoe do in their entire three hours.

  81. I’m trying to think how I can have less fun right now. Might mix some vinegar in my beer or something.

  82. I know that admission was difficult for you, coos, but he’s been better than 20, 21, 36, 61, and of course all the slugs.

  83. One word describes this team; DISCOMBOBULATED. But I must admit to myself, that when the Rangers are playing this badly, there’s something very intriguing about watching them fall apart. Is that weird?

  84. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_I’m trying to think how I can have less fun right now_

Go back and read your laughable advocacy of Boyle over Zuccarello.

  85. And now I feel better. People who have stalkers are obviously *very important* and, in most cases, *above average looking*. Thanks, Kenneth.

  86. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Do they have a safety net under Eric and the chase bridge?

The chase ledge has to be way over fire code capacity by now!!

  87. I hear Team USA is still interested in Stepan. God help them. They’d better be in a bracket with Jamaica, Nigeria and Belgium.

  88. Any chance AV melts down and has a Tortorella-esque postgame press conference after this mess is over? The slim chance of that happening is probably the only reason I’ve kept the TV on so far

  89. while my prediction about McIllrath being better than Anton Stralman may have been premature, I’m willing to wager that in the long run I will be right.

  90. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Jamaica had a bobsled team, they might have a hockey team that could beat a US team with Stepan.

  91. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Anything I can do to help you feel better about yourself, I am happy to, since your beliefs aren’t cutting it.

  92. Moore got lucky there with the linesman waving off icing, but seriously, WTB was he thinking? “Ok, I have the puck, let me chuck it off the boards down the ice instead of maintaining possession or passing it to a teammate!”

  93. Joe: “Make fewer plays.”

How many plays have NYR made tonight that they can actually make any fewer?

  94. Carp can you at least get the t-shirt shooter awesome wonder noise maker blow it into Eric’s area? Maybe that will make him feel better

  95. The hocket “IQ” of these guys is mind-numbingly awful at times. I have no idea what they’re thinking when they make bad decision after bad decision.

  96. Staal Wart? I was wondering the same thing earlier. I haven’t notice Nash at all but I have noticed Dubi and Anisimov.

  97. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Talbot with the miraculous save. Is there anything the kid can’t do?

  98. eddie eddie eddie on

wish we had chad’s johnson back….so that when he’s a sieve, we could salmon joe could say “pull Johnson”

  99. Ugh.. that was the goal that will make me wonder if we can actually win only to leave me even more disappointed at the end of the night..

  100. Now the Rangers are going to be really competitive in the last 8 minutes of the game, only to have our hopes crushed yet again when they give up an empty netter. Book it.

  101. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

What team would want Zuccarello when it could have the furrowed BriBrows?

  102. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

The Rangers used to be my sanctuary from the Mets and Jets….a glimmer of hope in the barren wasteland of NY sports

    No mas.

    No mas.

    R. Duran

  103. I’d just like to take this opportunity to point out that Kreider is a +2 tonight and leads the Rangers in Corsi rating over the course of this season.

    The kid drives possession.

  104. eddie eddie eddie on

al trout wig and peedough shower together……not that there is anything wrong with that….

  105. That’s why you STOP in front of the net, Pullout. Although he might have missed from there even if he had been in the right position.

  106. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

If we score now, Talbot takes the loss. Don’t score another goal. Let Hanka Hanka Burning Love take the L.

  107. Two pressing questions?

    (1) Why didn’t Henrik make “the big save”?

    (2) Why did the defense hang Talbot out?

Reverse the names if you like.

  108. Rangers are going to make it easy for me not to miss any tv shows, new or old this winter, that’s for sure.

  109. _iMister D, yea, forgot about McD. I would keep him and kreider but that’s it._

I feel like this used to be a longer list. Callahan is still on it because no-Callahan Rangers isn’t something I’m prepared to handle. JTM and Step would still require a “wow, we won that damn trade” return. Otherwise … lets make cool trades. Start with Nash for Pacioretty. Cap space a fringe benefit.

  110. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

A tremendous performance by Talbot tonight. He’s been a breath of fresh air. The L thankfully goes to Hanka Hanka.

  111. eddie eddie eddie on

Headzo – how about ordering a Sather….but you need 2 straws in order to suck it …

  112. As bad at hockey as Zuccarello is, he’s at least consistently getting his number called. If any of the others gave half the effort he did, they’d be in a lot better shape.

  113. Talbot may soon be Goalie #1, around here, if the Rangers go by results and not by salary.

  114. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

That’s a little harsh on Talbot, Carp.

What matters is how you’re performing now, and Hank’s not doing very well.

You don’t get bonus points for Vezina nominations, and he’s not keeping us in many games.

  115. I LOVE that come March when they’re scrambling for points we’ll be talking about this home stand and how they should woulda coulda…

  116. That last stop HAD to be made! McD had little choice but to try to keep that puck in late, losing.

  117. Mister D, in reality I don’t want Sather doing anything. I’ve seen what he can do in 13 years as a GM of the rangers. The rangers are screwed. Dark days are here and it’s not leaving anytime soon. Future looking bleak.

  118. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

Hank is no longer benefiting from the defense-first systems of Torts and Renney. His even strength save % is falling further by the game.

  119. Here’s the thing a lot of you guys don’t get so I’m going to spell it out by asking myself a rhetorical question …

“Hey, Mister D, who tried the hardest to get the Rangers a point or two tonight?”

“Brandon Goddamn Dubinsky. There’s no argument otherwise.”

#17 forever. Johnny Moore is a kid, he can find a new one.

  120. Sioux-per-man Fire Up the Diesel on

    Did Nash play tonight?
    0- shots on goal
    0- hits
    0- blocks
    0- PIM

I could get more out of Tommy Wingels…..

    Get KRISTO UP here. NOW!!!

  121. _Mister D, in reality I don’t want Sather doing anything. I’ve seen what he can do in 13 years as a GM of the rangers._

Unless they declare a secondary free agent market, we should be ok. He makes really great trades for the most part.

  122. Also, what the hell Sioux said. Can we look at the other guys making $7MM or more per season and debate how many you can watch without knowing you’re watching? Even Eric Staal (brother of Ranger Marc Staal) plays a physical game and will do something, even if its something dumb, to be involved. Nash was a complete no show tonight.

  123. Stranger Nation on

The Wrath was fine. Love when Salmon Joe mistook Bucky for The Undertaker on the pinch hit leading to Artie’s goal

Nash and Richards were an outright embarrassment tonite, just a sad effort by two of their vets…disgusting.

  124. Glad we dressed Pyatt again…why would he be out with Boyle when we are down a goal with under 4 minutes…slow soft and useless… Bring up frigging kristo

  125. Mister D, remember I said how Dubinsky has intangibles, you saw it on display tonight. Heart goes a long way when your not overly talented.

  126. I love that Anisomov is referred to as a player who never would have been a top 6 player…and yet his 8 goals would be second on this team right now. What’s that tell you guys about our offense?

  127. ThisYearsModel on

Anyone hear Pete DeBoer’s comment after the Devils game this homestand? “8 Million dollar goalie my a**.”

  128. Nash, more so Stranger. Thought he may have come out with a little edge tonight but not so much.

  129. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Mister D, remember I said how Dubinsky has intangibles, you saw it on display tonight. Heart goes a long way when your not overly talented._

    Intangibles 4, Rangers 2. (:

  130. Can we start the “We didn’t want him chant”?? I mean the fans did say that before Nash was traded here…

  131. Stranger Nation on

lets go through the checklist again

back up & back up’s back up goalie beats us – check

Ex-Ranger scoring impotant goal – check

BJ scores first goal of year – check

Hank gets beat high glove side – check

  132. Kenneth at clinchers of '89Flames '94Rangers '96Avs on

_Can we look at the other guys making $7MM or more per season and debate how many you can watch without knowing you’re watching? Even Eric Staal (brother of Ranger Marc Staal) plays a physical game and will do something, even if its something dumb, to be involved_

Mister D in a nutshell. Saying something dumb, just to say something.

  133. Rangers finally inching away from .500! And how come only Calgary gets to fire its GM? Does NY need to petition the league for permission?

  134. Sioux-per-man Fire Up the Diesel on

Sure glad we pull up a Guy from Hartford that’s going to help us WIN a game.

I want to see Kristo, and if it means losing every game to a backup goalie, and letting the other teams rookie’s score there 1’st goal of the year. So be it.

  135. Even Eric Staal (brother of Ranger Marc Staal) plays a physical game and will do something, even if its something dumb, to be involved

Yeah, like concuss hid brother with a cheap shot, hastening the end of his brothers’ career.

  136. Welcome back to the dark years.

How many #1 goalies have the Rangers faced all year? The most disturbing part is that the team doesnt seem the least bit incensed or angry that every tea that rolls in here throws their backup in against the Rangers

  137. Stranger Nation on

    luv Dalmon Joe talking Olympics

Dubi – what did those intangibles get tonite? Team USA – left hand side please

The BJs suck big time…we just suck it harder

  138. Our two goalies have 17 votes already. Either the bonehead contingent is evaluationally vacant or someone is trying (and not succeeding) to to be funny.

  139. Unless Sather is FINALLY selling to start over (ridding us of Rick Trash as a start), he shouldn’t so anything until he can let the crap 4th liners walk. He traded away a bunch of picks, so he should try to get them.

As for Lundqvist, he hasn’t been great, he’s been horrible actually, but the team in from of him has been brutal. This is the worse defensive coverage I’ve seen in years. Hagelin jumping over to his opposite wing without blocking the passing lame and leaving his point man wide open? You kidding me? That’s stuff they teach you in mites.

This AV chase around in the defensive zone system works when you have guys who can skate and possess the puck. The Rangers haven’t had that since 1997. Had he conceded that point and had these guys collapsing in the zone and protecting the slot like Torts did, they’d give themselves a chance to win.

But this is what Henke and Slats and half the Rangers fan base wanted, a more open and offensive system. This is what happens when you implement an offensive system with a bunch of guys who aren’t offensive/possession players.

They play 2011-12 and even 2012-13 Rangers hockey and this team will be fine.

  140. AV: “We work on it in practice.” What practice? Maloney says serious practices (for all NHL teams) are few and far between.

  141. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

    Thanks Carp

Al Trautwig: “So what is it?”

Dave Maloney: “They have no talent, ya mo-ron.”

  142. And those offensive players don’t grow on trees. In the post cap era, you need to draft them so that you get them in their prime. But instead we draft “hidden gems” like Sanguinetti and McIlrath instead of taking the guys that most other teams rate highly.

As for McIlrath, he made mistakes and he still can’t skate, but it’s his first game and that’s expected. I still don’t think he’s 1st round pick quality, especially when Tarasenko and Schwartz and Coyle and Bjugstad are available, but he’ll improve as he gets used to the speed. Is he an NHL player even as a 5th and 6th d-man? Maybe, but it takes time to find that out.

  143. Wick, I don’t see why not. I don’t know if he can skate well enough to stay permanently, but he’s not much worse that Falk, and he sure tried to be nasty.

_Why do they ask Henrik the same old questions and not expect the same (platitudinous) responses?_

Softball questions to the $59.5MM man.

  145. Also Carp, I’m not trying to be a smart ass here. But a season and a few months later, do you still disagree with me about the Nash trade?

I know player for player, it might still look good on paper, but instead of a balanced 4 line team like they had, they now have a top heavy team thanks to the payroll and lack of production from those guys.

  146. Player for player, Jonny, I still feel the Nash trade is a good trade. Where it went wrong was Sather not replacing the players (who, as much as I may have liked them, are more abundant than a Nash) who departed adequately.

  147. My vent consists of 3 words,,, Nash ( —-) (—-) …….fill in the blanks with whatever, doesn’t matter.

  148. Hey guys, remember when I started doing italics to quote a post I was responding to? Wow was that a *positive* step in Ranger posting for me and others who want to do things similar to the way I do them. Good stuff!

_Yeah, like concuss hid brother with a cheap shot, hastening the end of his brothers’ career._

Right, that wasn’t cool, but he was still playing a hockey game. Cheap shots suck, but checking and playing physical and doing anything is still a plus. I want neither at their cap hits. I want Pacioretty. And I want cap space.

  149. Someone told Richie Rich to throw a check now and again, and he tried, though ineffectively. Why, oh why do they have him doing his faux forecheck, standing in front of his offensive net when each time, the D sends the puck out and everyone beats him by ten yards down the ice?

  150. Best part of Dorsett ‘Beginnings’: His teacher says he never really liked school, wanted to get to the rink. Then she asked him “Were you able to read your contract, Derek?”

  151. _I know player for player, it might still look good on paper_

Does it? If we offered Nash back for Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixon and whoever that 1st turned into (he has a funny name), do you think Columbus accepts? Even pretend we eat $1.5MM or whatever to balance roster spots.

  152. Papa, it came out really good. Its the only reason I’m still hanging in here on an otherwise brutal night.

(Don’t want to further brag, but at 5’10, I further showed my *toughness* when me and the kid went to the grocery store only to find out they were out of chives. I *beared down*, grabbed some scallions and I made things work.)

  153. I think we do / should trade pieces for a superstar 120 out of 100 times. I think we misidentified a really good goal scorer with a great pedigree as a superstar.

Logical fallacy. Columbus got rid of Nash because they were in rebuilding mode and wanted to move his cap hit in exchange for a package of young players and picks.

  155. Intangibles led to me adding some shallots and smoked paprika despite those two ingredients being nowhere near the recipe.

  156. Dorsett: “Dad would be down at the shop and we’d wreck the house for him, me and my brothers.”

And then a year later traded pieces for a high cap hit superstar.

One season remaining on his contract, now an expiring contract.

  159. Stranger Nation on

Richards at Center just doesnt work – would have put Dom Moore between he and Nash. Nash does not play well with Richie…Gabby and Richie didnt work out. But he leads us in pts so we should stop complaining.

How did the PP work tonite? AV had 4th liners out there he was so disgusted

All that and we came a missed Zucc rebound from a tie in the 3rd

Would have loved to see Dubi and The Wrath go at it

  160. Latona – that’s fair, but let’s not forget the cap didn’t go up and players salaries for those guys did. Not to mention, guys who are 3rd and 4th line players are free agents for a reason. We seem to only buy crap teams former 4th liners.

And not to mention that on paper it looks great, but hockey isn’t played on paper. Even if it was, we went from a $7 mil 30 year old guy who scores 40 a year with a year left on his deal to a $7.8 mil 29 year old who scores 30 a year with 5 years left.

To me that’s just bad business (and I know they are two separate trades, but a team with Gaborik + almost a mil extra in cap space is better than a team with Nash IMO.

  161. Scumbag Lundqvist partying up his new contract with 4 straight losses and counting.

Sather was out of his mind when he throw that contract at Lundqvist.

McDonagh’s flaws and mistakes constantly go unnoticed as do Staal’s and Stepan’s.

And AV I totally don’t get. Why would he play Talbot against Jets right after he beat Canucks? And why wouldn’t he play Talbot against garbage Devils especially when they play the Capitals next game and then he doesn’t play Talbot against a weak offensively team like Nashville.

  162. I totally think it went wrong on the ice, Jonny, but I still think less of it has to do with Nash and more of it has to do with no Dubinsky and Anisimov replacements, and then Sather letting Prust, Mitchell, and Fedotenko walk and not replacing them either. Slats easily could have resigned the last two however, and if not, here are some players who could have replaced them and the others better than, you know, Jeff Halpern.

Zenon Konopka, Adam Burish, and Paul Gaustad could have been really nice fourth liners last year.

To replace Dubinsky it was definitely trickier, but I think Jay McClement could have nearly the trick. Maybe you couldn’t replace all of those players via free agency, I just think it was possible for Sather to have done a lot better job of it, and that wouldn’t make the Nash trade look so bad.
