It’s Go Time! … Rangers at Red Wings

[polldaddy poll=7509588 align="left"]
Game 9.wings
Rangers at Red Wings.

Finally, and end to this torturous nine-game road journey to start the season (15 counting preseason). Whether it ends with a win, loss or Bettman Bonus Point it’ll be good news for the Rangers that it’s over.

Cam Talbot starts in goal again. Henrik Lundqvist practiced Saturday at the morning skate and said he hopes to play in the home opener Monday.

Justin Falk and Brandon Mashinter are prucha’d, as Mats Zuccarello gets back into the lineup.

Ah, the Good Ol’ Joe. Maybe now that the Wings are in the East there can be a rivalry built. I don’t recall a lot of Rangers success there. I remember the night Joey Kocur fought Bob Probert on Mike Keenan’s orders, and Probert’s mom scolded Kocur after the game. I remember the night Michel Bergeron fell off the bench and disappeared behind the players.

I also recall, chillingly, going in and out of there the same day, with a police escort, in the first sporting event involving a New York team after the 9/11 attacks (one of the rare instances where reporters flew with the team due to the circumstances and Glen Sather’s understanding) and how emotional it was flying directly over still smoldering and smoking lower Manhattan.

CONTEST WINNER: Congrats to What The HECK!, the only entrant to predict Flyers 2, Rangers 1 and the winner of two tickets to Thursday’s Halloween game against Buffalo.

Don’t forget to vote for Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left. And if you want to help me select Three Stars in my next-day reviews I only have 73 openings left (plus playoffs).

  2. From tc03: (to moi)

    “You are an idiot.”

“Pull your head out of your behind.”

I suppose you thought you could get away with that, you nasty little pencil-necked troll who hides behind posts under four different handles for anonymity.

    LGR!!! LGR!!!!

If we can shut them out we might win!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

I do believe Kreider may be called ‘The Kreider’ shortly. He will can those. Just gotta keep positive and dig. He’s a player.

  5. not a good start for #14.

the Rangers look pretty good otherwise. MDZ still making lazy passes.

  6. Doesn’t matter if Pyatt didn’t realize Kindl was there. Why the hell is his stick that high to begin with?

  7. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Man, who shot that Red Wing? Oh, sorry, he got lightly tapped by a stick. Nice flop. They teaching that over there?

  8. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

This is some PP unit. We are defending nicely. Talbot is huge.

Damn. Possibility of no “Fire Sather” chants on Monday night.

  9. So here is my annual “Glad I paid for the Centre Ice package, only to have games blacked out” rant. Forced to watch the Detroit feed.

  10. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Would love to be able to check Talbot’s blood pressure right now. Calm????

  11. Hey, there’s something new. A Rangers forward lost the puck at the blue line on the PP and led to a shorthanded scoring chance.

  12. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

JT and Kreider look like 2 of our better players tonight. Great to see.

  13. ThisYearsModel on

When did the Rangers bring back Gene Carr? They couldn’t put the puck I the ocean if they were shooting it off a pier.

  14. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Pullout needs to be outta here. Agreed. He’s too slow afoot and really slow thinking. Not a skilled player but thats the square hole he’s pegged into. Bad choice.

Trade him for a 2nd and a 3rd and a conditional next year 2nd, ok?????

  15. Maybe this is like “Louie” when CBS lets Louis CK do a pilot in the hopes of replacing a retiring Letterman but really CBS is just using Louis to negotiate a new contract with Letterman and give Letterman less $$. Maybe Cam Talbot is helping us rope in Hank!

  16. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

I don’t mind if they play like this all year. Win or lose it’s not boring. They’re trying, even though they’re not talented. Just play. Just try.

  17. Agreed Matty. Like the effort. A lot. Hopefully Vigneault notices what the kids are bringing to the table.

  18. Even with a period where they weren’t outplayed they still can’t score and zuccarello hockey iq equals borderline stupid.

We can’t score doesn’t matter how we play

  19. I just spotted a “Little Ceasars” at _The Joe_ . Bet the newly renovated MSG doesn’t have that type of luxury.

  20. The team needs results it could only happen if we score. We can’t .

Maybe gaborik old get here for 2nd per. Anyone see brassard tonite

  21. I thought Scott Ariel watched every pp last year. How can richy and del zaster still play the point. It’s beyond a del zaster.

  22. At least this season is being tempered by Mrs. Manny turning into a culinary genius and utilizing our proximity to the Brooklyn Farmer’s Market

  23. Who woulda guessed there’s still farmers in Brooklyn

What kind of seeds take root on the chewed up Gowanus?

  24. When captain America throws his mighty shield
All those who chose to oppose his shield must yield

  25. >>They look like they need a 40 goal scorer … Oh, right.

I’ll settle for a one goal scorer right now.

  26. iDoodie Machetto on

Wow. Howard stopped that second Boyle shot out of mid air with the paddle while reaching behind him. This is going to be a shut out.

  27. You’d hope their shooting luck might eventually turn around if they keep playing like this.

    Howard shutout then…

  28. “Utilizing our proximity to the Farmer’s Market” sounded like a euphemism to me as well. Not sure what for though.

  29. iDoodie Machetto on

LW, maybe he is being meta about it, like, everyone knows Osgood was just lucky to be on such awesome teams, and that Osgood still deserves SOME credit.

  30. iDoodie Machetto on

I would’ve taken one year of Gaborik and the roster spot next season and/or deadline deal this year.

  31. iDoodie Machetto on

I’ve been saying for a few games now: I like how Pouliot attacks the net when he isn’t paired with Brassard. Finally paid off.

  32. How I knew that was going to happen. We suck we have no luck we take pen after goal. I hate this freaking team.

  33. They really, really are, Denny. I’m shocked that the Diamond PK is working for them. Shocked.

  34. Pretty rough first home game for AV when the fans start chanting to fire him

    Ray Handley was more comfy

  35. When summer arrives, we’ll all be saying, “Remember that time last fall we were tied with the Wings. Ah, those two minutes. ’twas lovely, lovely.”

  36. Another one of those “we are getting close” and “we did a lot of good things” games.

Useless. They will be saying that for the next 10 games when they are 2-16

  37. Exactly when your 2-6 it’s results and wins otherwise all this solid off zone Time means Crap.

Last time I checked we were 15th in east of 16 and 7 of 8 in div.

  38. Lindy Ruff, Dallas Eakins, Torts and Messier all have a better winning percentage behind the bench than AV so far.

  39. Gotta start playing better before things turn, boys. It’s not accepting a good effort over a win. It’s that it’s a necessary step toward winning. If they play like this they will win their share.

  40. eric- u need some kind of happy pills. by march, we will have forgotten this little losing streak. and if we dont, we get a top 5 or so pick. its all gooooooood

  41. u need to detach yourself emotionally from the team, get yourself a hot horny honey and every lil thing, gunna be alright mon

  42. It’s beyond frustrating in a game where they look like an NHL team to have guys incapable of finishing and when they do another lazy pen kills any positive feel.

  43. I just turned on the game when they were facing off for the 3rd period. I see some things never change. Rangers struggle to score goals. going to be a long season. 2-7 here we come.

  44. Other than the giveaway, he’s really been moving his feet. A lot of guys have, more than any other game, I think.

  45. Doodie Machetto on

Good work by Brassard there. Gotta give him credit when he does good things since I hate on him so much.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

tommy, it’s two games. Let’s not trade Lundqvist and ride the undrafted free agent just yet.

  47. Mrs Biron sent a limo to the airport to pick him up for his retirement party, but the car slipped through his fifty hole

  48. ThisYearsModel on

Miller would be at the Detroit airport waiting for a flight to Hartford under the former coach.

  49. Calbot is a humongous upgrade over injured Hank with no solid defensive plan in front of him, too.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

The driver pulled up to the Holland Tunnel and was confused. He had found Biron’s five hole, but Biron was nowhere to be found.

  51. Doodie, I hear you but so far so good with Talbot, a lot better than I thought. Do you want to pay Lundqvist 8+ mil per year, not a smart investment.

  52. Rob in Beantown
“Talbot is a humongous upgrade over Biron”

He is a big upgrade over this season Lundquist

  53. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

I lost about one minute of live action but I imagined that:

    a) Boyle gave someone a halfhearted check, then lost his edge;
    b) Girardi shot a candy ass wrister from the point and caused a stopp

  54. I saw him play in Hartford, Rob. He’s the biggest person ever. He’s HUGE. The cross bar comes up to below his waist. He has to have back problems trying to crouch that low all the time.

  55. Can you imagine? First NHL win is with an original six over another original six? Awesome memories for Tabby Cat Talbot.

  56. Cross Check Charlie on

Didn’t get the score right, but got the result right!

    Cross Check Charlie

A pre festivus miracle tonight. Rangers win 5-3.
    October 26th, 2013 at 10:24 AM

  57. MSG giving Brassard the star of the game is symptomatic of what we deal with here daily. All people notice is goals.

Meanwhile, the Tabby Cat who sat in net for the second time in his life gets no credit. Good call

  58. Why do the Hockey Night Live guys laugh at everything … they come on the air, Al starts with a summary, and everybody’s laughing. Nitrous oxide being pumped into the studio?

  59. HA!!! HA!!!! works every time with the teams I root for, be extremely negative and they will do the positive, it worked. I had the rangers going 2-7 before the season started and the last game of the 9 game road trip in OT they find a way to win and go 3-6. Enjoy the Dogs carp, I’ve been Carped again.

  60. I thought all the guys who scored actually did play much better tonight, along with a bunch of guys who didn’t score.

  61. Doodie Machetto on

They still have that stupid hat? That’s an old team’s identity. Stop trying to be that team. You are NOTHING like that team. Get your own identity.

  62. Doodie Machetto on

I agree, bull dog. Easily his best game of the year (that includes all of last season).

  63. Well, as awful as they’ve been, the Rangers would have taken 4 wins off this trip before the season started, and they got 3. Not all bad.

  64. I wanted 8 pts 4-5 prior to season I will gladly take 6 after watching this crap team for the past few weeks.

Watch us get blown out Monday at HOME.

  65. I know people are going to think I’m nuts but this reminds me of the transition of Vanbiesbrouck to Richter. Lundqvist to Talbot.

  66. tommyG

analogy is flawed only because Vanbiesbrouck was playing better than Lundqvist was before being “replaced.”

  67. Stranger Nation on

    Holy Hot Dog

    Pullout pulls up

    Zucchini served with wings

    Brass is polished

    Lets Go Rangers!

  68. Carp stops for a moment between dog #8 and dog #9 to say, “Eric, would you stop complaining? Please? I’m tryin’ to eat here.”

  69. Doodie, that’s funny. When I saw that replay of Rinaldo getting hit in the face I said pretty much the same thing.

  70. John Scott’s Lament

I’m just a soul whose intentions are good.
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

  71. ‘Wish I were a headlight on a westbound train,
    I’d shine my light on
    Cool Colorado rain –
Goin’ where them Chilly Winds don’t blow.’

  72. not going to get carried away after 2 starts but:

    (a) Talbot’s 2 starts have looked better than possibly all of Lundqvist’s starts this season

    (b) Lundqvist is dealing with something and not rushing him back and letting a younger goalie have a tryout can’t hurt anybody

    (c) a little healthy competition will be good for Lundqvist

  73. Very strong game from The Kreider. He doesn’t look lost this year. He’s going to get even better as he gets more playing time.

  74. We did it!

Everyone liking the OLD TIME -HOCKEY- BASEBALL occurring in St. Louis tonight? Double Switches, no DH, fat guys at first, pinch running……
