Do-over: Ticket contest … predict the score of tonight’s game

OK, so nobody predicted the score of Saturday’s 4-0 Devils win in Newark (and that really is the contest, predicting the score) … so let’s try it again.

Our gracious and generous donor has given us a pair of tickets to give away, so we’ll have another contest today, from now until “It’s Go Time!” is posted around 6:30. The winner will get two tickets to the Oct. 31 game against Buffalo at Madison Square Garden.

So let’s review the rules, shall we? (answer: yes).

1) This is the easy part. You pick the score, then a bunch of tiebreakers: game-winning goal, Rangers shots, Devils shots. Your entry should look like this (with different numbers and names): Rangers 17, Flyers 1. GWG: Avery. Rangers shots: 18. Flyers shots: 44.

This is new!!!!: Don’t use NYR or Blueshirts or Philly or Philthy or Phlyers or Orange Crud or Mr. Snider’s Heroes or anything other than Rangers and Flyers when you make your pick. Don’t use abbreviations, nicknames, colons, dashes or semicolons or any other punctuation between the team name and the score. Just keep it very, very simple and do it exactly like this:

Rangers 17, Flyers 1.

If there is anything other than the name of the team then a space then the score, as shown here, you may be disqualified. Then add your tiebreakers.

It just makes it much easier for me to scroll through all the entries that way. Thank you.

2) The score of the game must be exact. Not closest. Not margin of victory. You must have the exact score to win or to move on to the tiebreakers, if needed. Note that the game-winning goal is the goal that provides the margin of victory, whether it be the second goal in a 17-1 game, or an overtime or (God forbid) winning shootout goal.

The Rangers’ shots tiebreaker shall go to the closest prediction without going over. If contestants are still tied, the Flyers shots tiebreaker shall be used, and also will go to the closest prediction without going over. If all remaining contestants are over the number of Flyers shots, the contestant closest to the correct total wins.

Finally, if still somehow tied—or if nobody picks the exact final score—I will either give the tickets to Sally again or flip a coin at Blog HQ.

3) The most important rules regarding entry into the contest: DO NOT EVEN DREAM ABOUT ENTERING MORE THAN ONCE. This is also new!!!! You MUST have a legitimate, working e-mail address in your comment header … you know, when you enter your screen name, etc. before the first time you comment. I will check for e-mail addresses and IP addresses from any entrant whose screen name I do not recognize. Multiple entrants will be disqualified. Capisce?

Only entries in this thread will count. In other words, don’t put your predictions in any other thread.

4) Don’t get me aggravated with dumb questions or details.

5) *-The judge’s decision on all issues will be final. (*-I am the judge; though I may be appointing a sub-judge for this contest).

Good luck, and have fun.

See youse tonight.

He has more points than Norris Stralman, the mad bomber, and OPG combined (not saying much).

And he has one less point thru 7 games than all the ranger d men combined through seven games.

  3. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Rangers 6 Flyers 2….GWG Richards…Rangers shots Cabo Wabo Tequila, Flyers shots Makers Mark Whiskey

  4. ‘Bangin’ on the bongoes like a chimpanzee
Oh, that ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Get your tickets for nothin’, get your chicks for free.’

  5. Six Miniature Dachshunds, ordered by Torts to walk to Vancouver, arrived today, 09:45 hours.

  6. Wicky is TOTALLY right about Mcllrath. I mean, Vigneault played Tostitoes! So he knows the importance of a heavy. COME ON

Also, if you picked against the Rangers: *I Hate You*

  7. If Hank hated Tort so much why is he being so closed off about his injury? Shouldn’t he be disclosing all?

  8. @HartnettHockey 1m

Luongo on John Tortorella: “We’re enjoying the way he coaches, the way he motivates guys. Guys get really fired up with that kind of stuff.”

  9. Only one GWG: Stephan and it was immediately corrected. Very disappointing.

And CCCP isn’t complaining incessantly about the contest either. Not the same around here any more…

  10. When the Rangers have to leave MSG do you think they will be able to get ice time at _War Memorial Arena_ ?

  11. Flyers 5, Rangers 2. GWG: LeCavalier. Rangers shots: 23. Flyers shots: 33.

    We’re Number 30! We’re Number 30!

  12. Yeah, I don’t believe that these are all independent posters who just happen to be coming in little spurts. Just some guy (Brad Richards earlier) going down the row in his computer lab or the library or something.

  13. Rob in Beantown on

I don’t think they can claim the prize unless they have an actual working email address. So unless they’re also creating fake email addresses it’s a waste

  14. I have like 4 or 5. The good one, my work one, couple old ones, the spam one, the one I gave Manny …

  15. All I know is,These rags better play with some damn effort with a bit of heart sprinkled in.Even if they would play to half of calli’s heart and effort, that would be good enough.

  16. Matty"GetBetterNasherandCally"Boy on

    Rangers 2 Flyers 5
    GWG Streit

    Shots: Rangers (28) Flyers (31)

(just playing along. if i happen to guess right, I will donate tix to the second best guesser)

  17. Matty"GetBetterNasherandCally"Boy on

Manny, I will agree with you above. I take back anything bad I said about Torts. Then again, don’t think I did either.

Will go on record and say this early season slump was thoroughly predictable (as some of us said) as a let down from his pushing the team to achieve. Hope they listen to someone, anyone sometime soon.

  18. Scott suspended indefinitely for that total cheap shot on Erikson. As far as I’m concerned it should be permanent but the league will probably give him 3 games claiming the intent wasn’t there but it was reckless blah blah blah. That was the absolute worst kind of dirty hit since it was pretty clearly designed to not look dirty and take advantage of what would appear at normal speed to be typical contact. To hell with that talentless thug.

  19. Ah human nature! Cerate a “contest” with any meaningless prize, I mean at least you can turn off the TV, and even the wisest posters jump in like.

Lemmings, I mean fans who continue to fill the MSG coffers for the privilege of witnessing mediocrity! ;)

  20. Rangers 2, Flyers 5 GWG – Lacavalier SOG – Rangers 32, Flyers 28

In honor of THE Miami Pimp, I have THE Krieder scoring both our goals in ESPN Top 10 eligibility

  21. Doodie Machetto on

I just finished reading Bettman’s decision on Kaleta. I could write a goddamn treatise on it. It’s brilliant. Holy carcillo.

  22. Dubeliveau believes that TAL-BOW (as VEEN-yo-yo calls him) is Lou Gehrig to Hank’s Wally Pip

  23. Well, it looks like this blog doesn’t like foreign accents. I’ll spell his name the American way: Jan Hlavac.

  24. Doodie Machetto on

Lloyd, it was probably written by someone else, but I don’t care. It’s REALLY good.

  25. Rob in Beantown on

It’s amazing to me that the NHLPA defended Kaleta and went so far as to assign blame to his victim who he recklessly injured. Why throw the victim under the bus to protect the creep who has injured players in the past and probably will again?

  26. I have a hard time believing that Kaleta’s suspension should be the same number of games as Clarkson’s when Clarkson was guilty of coming on the ice when he wasn’t supposed to and Kaleta has literally years worth of egregious hits on opposing players.

  27. Is there another back-up goalie for da ranger tonight or is it Hankie?? If it is the future Sewdish olympian we may be in for a looooong nite since Hank won’t be anywhere near the ice no matter what the score. Let’s hope he’s channeling Ken Dryden.

I am volunteering my services having played goal in the Stuy Town roller hockey league circa 1970. I was tough, no mask, no cup, just a towel.

  28. Gentlemen, I have something important to tell you … so important, in fact, that I am taking 30 seconds from my workday to point it out:

  29. A lot of people seem to be around today. Anyone ever sit in the West Balcony seats? Opinions?

  30. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Dennis Potvin on NHL Radio laughing out loud about tonight’s game in Philly. Stopped short of calling either team pathetic, but did say he hoped they both tried.

“Uh, I guess I shouldn’t be laughing”, he said. “I make my living doing hockey sports analysis”.

  31. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

    New addition to English Language:

    Satherize (pronounced ‘Sathreyes’)

verb. meaning ‘to cleanse or purge an organization, to totally bleach out it’s talent, and leave them with nothing’.’to purge or clean an organization’.

  32. Being a Red Sox / Ranger fan, on first blush it looks like I have a happy conflict tonite. But there’s a good chance the Ranger game will sort itself out before the 8:07 PM first pitch (yeah right). But if that fails and for some ungodly reason I decide to stick with my Blueshirts, knowing the Sawks, I’ll probably only miss the first 2 innings, though it could be a quick game with Wacha-Wacha and nose-picker Lackey

  33. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Injuries to key players happen. Our team is missing, arguably, our top 3 players (Nash, Hank, Cally) and, maybe, number 5 or 6 (Hags).

    Not pretty.

Couple it with ridiculous road trip. New system, new coach. We’ll get better. We will.

  34. Matt Green is a Stanley Cup Champion and past Captain of the Fighting Sioux. Came across a favorite story:

When Matt Greene was a freshman, Blais told him that if he takes one more penalty, he’s done for the night. If I recall correctly, Greene did take a penalty in the first period, and instead of going to the box, he skated straight to the locker room.

  35. Rangers have held the opposition under 4 goals twice out of 5 games this season. I have a very hard time believing number 3 happens with Cam Talbot.

  36. Great article LIR. Thanks for sharing. I didn’t even consider that this is pretty much the beginning of him backing up Hank which means his NHL career has begun and it’s up to him to lose it.

  37. Rob in Beantown, yeah didn’t realize he went to college in the hockey hotbed of Alabama. Definitely beat the odds.

  38. Talbot is coming in on a winning streak. The kid of full of confidence, and excited to be dressing for his first game.

I think he wins tonight, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he shuts them out.

  39. You clowns want to watch the World Series instead of a The Kreider renaissance / hat trick game?

Go ahead and roll the dice.

  40. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Sioux, I agree. This team is better without MAZ. And bigger. Smart decision.

  41. I have a feeling The Kreider is going to do something magical tonight. The likes of which we’ve never seen in the NHL before. I can’t exactly put my finger on it. It could be a 10-goal game … or a new “The Kreider Hat Trick (three goals, 5 assists, and a complete beatdown of the Flyers goalie) ..

But something is going to happen. And it’s going to be marvelous

  42. Matty"We'veBeenSatherized"Boy on

Cam had an ok pre-season. He’s not awful. This is a good spot for him to prove himself.

Here’s hoping our defense will be a little…uh…tighter than the last few games we played.

  43. Pimp we had The Kreider in the playoffs. Part 1
Last years 3 points Part 2

Tonight is Part 3 or THE KREIDER III

I’m thinking its going to look like Rocky III in Philly but you never know.

The Kid needs to make a name for himself – sooner than later.

  44. If we are going to struggle for goals all year long.

I would rather do it with Kreider-Miller-Kristo with 3rd line minutes. Scoring goals, instead of grinding out the same old nothing, with 0 pts, 0 hits.

  45. ah dang I only put “Schenn” on my entry

hey Carp, is it ok if I post my entry again specifying which member of the Schenn family I meant?

  46. Don’t ban Scott! He’s not a dirty player. AT ALL. He has never, ever been suspended. Come on.

  47. And we all know suspensions are the measure of whether a player is dirty. Hagelin is like, what, 85th percentile in dirt?

  48. I really want to see a The Kreider – Stepan – Callahan line (once Cally is done being a woman)

  49. I disagree, respectfully. I see nothing wrong, on Scott’s side, with the Kessel situation. Scott told him to move because he was going to fight someone. Kessel admitted that John Scott warned him and told him to move. Kessel decided to throw his gloves like a tiny idiot. Then Kessel swing his stick like it was 1920 out there. That was the only thing that should have been suspended, in my opinion.

It’s hockey. It’s the NHL. You don’t get suspended for fighting someone smaller than you that decides to be a willing participant in said fight.

Honestly, I would take John Scott on this team over some of our current 4th line players. He’s one heck of a deterrent when used properly.

  50. Thanks, Carp. ;-)

Rangers 2, Flyers 4. GWG: B. Schenn. Rangers shots: 22. Flyers shots: 31.

  51. What happens if Kessel simply says “no” when Scott said he was going to fight him? Scott wouldn’t have dropped his gloves and attacked?

  52. Also, Manny, Kessel didn’t drop his gloves. He threw his hands up and then acted like a tiny idiot swinging his stick. That wasn’t a “poor decision”, it was an attack where the attackee did something dumb enough to gloss over the attack.

  53. Not a chance. Scott has never before fought a tiny guy on the ice. Scott wasn’t out there looking to kill Kessel. He just started a line brawl and as you see from the video, he immediately disengages with Kessel when a more formidable opponent comes along.

You might recall that a few minutes earlier a lopsided bout the OTHER way occured when Corey Tropp fought Jamie DeVane. Scott admits that, what he missed on the ice, was that Tropp consented to the fight. He was protecting his guys. That’s his job. That’s the way hockey has always been.

I’m not saying John Scott was perfect and did what I would have done. I don’t like what he did but I don’t think it’s nearly as egregious as everyone thinks. He didn’t even land a punch or even throw one!

  54. I see that Tort scratched David Booth last game and instead played Andrew Alberts for a whole 37 seconds. They won’t be trying to acquire Bickel for that role then.

  55. I had this fight earlier today on Twitter. I will see eye to eye with almost no one (except Wicky) on this situation.

And I love (most of) you guys/gals. And I think you all bring great things to the table and we can all agree that HOCKEY is the best sport ever and we all LOVE the NHL.

But we will all agree to disagree on this subject. We just won’t see eye to eye on fighting and enforcing in hockey.

  56. John Scott’s sole talent is being able to stand on skates while throwing a punch. In terms of hockey skills he’s utterly bereft. Might as well start pooling WWE’s developmental organization and teaching those kids how to skate.

  57. I guess if you’re going to have a total goon, might as well have the biggest, meanest, orneriest varmint on the planet … but the guy really can’t keep up. Makes Taylor Pyatt look like Yvan Cournoyer. Meep meep.

  58. lol@Carp

although on that basis one might also conclude that Taylor Pyatt has no business being in the league either

  59. again, if you’re assessing a hockey player’s worth on the basis of physical stature you could start putting pro wrestlers in uniform.

  60. Not suggesting Scott should ever play hockey again, but if for some unlikely reason he does get permabanned as many are calling for, that’s pretty ridiculous considering Matt Cooke is still in the league.

  61. He sure didn’t look like he wanted to beat the snot out of Dorsett, but Dorsett wanted his snot beaten out. Scott was laughing before and after.

  62. I hate to say it, but I agree with Milbury. John Scott’s “contribution” to this game is to knock skilled players out of the game for extended periods if time. He hasn’t prevented anything. He should be out if this league.

  63. LOL, Carp. Scott really won that fight by a huge margin. I’m sure if you scroll down you will see my comments there….

  64. I don’t mind enforcing and I’m only half on the “get rid of fighting” train. But when the enforcer is the guy targeting actual hockey players with cheapshots, he has no place in the game.

  65. Who has John Scott knocked out of the league? He usually fights big boys. In fact, he is so big that he actually usually has no one to fight. Everyone is a fraidy cat.

  66. Latona, Matt Cooke is a changed man.

I’ve been saying this for some time too, Cooke shouldn’t be playing in this league either. Neither should Raffi Torres and Kaleta. But at least those guys know where the net is.

  67. I don’t think fighting needs to be eliminated from the game. But, I also don’t know if a dedicated enforcer has any value.

  68. I didn’t see it, Manny … but I did see this one:

“That Dorsett is a couple of sammiches short of a picnic isn’t he?”

  69. But it’s not fair to make a distinction between “Enforcers” and “actual hockey players.” They are the same thing. Enforcers ARE Hockey Players. Behind every great scorer there was an enforcer keeping things safe for that guy. Joey Kocur and Probert, Georges Laraque and Dan Maloney and Tony Twist. Those guys actually helped out their teams.

And yes, I know all those guys are more skilled than John Scott. But I bet John Scott could knock a bunch of ’em out.

  70. why does it appear to me when the rangers get these so called best fighters in the league they come to the rangers and lose fights and aren’t impressive, never mind they can’t play hockey.

  71. It’s close to irrelevant what suspension Scott gets anyway. He plays a couple of pointless minutes a game for one of the worst teams in the league. Was the same when VPG got his 19 games or whatever it was. Who’d notice?

  72. lmgo, Carp. I actually post on Hockey Fights under the name of my favorite hockey player as a child: Zarley Zalapski. Loved that guy when he was on THE WHALE.

  73. If Matt Cooke is a changed man, that means he is no longer intentionally trying to injure people, which means that he once was trying to injure people.

(I couldn’t tell if you were being sarcastic or not ilb. But I still wanted to say that.)

  74. Here is what I say to anyone who wants fighting banned in the NHL: For a nominal fee you can buy a season pass to watch the Swedish Elite League or some other Euro league that plays on huge ice and doesn’t allow fighting. You can watch 400 Erik Christensen’s pass the puck to each other while doing twirlie-do’s.

Please don’t ruin the NHL which has been this way since the 1917 and actually made hockey safer than what preceded it at the turn of the century.

  75. Colton Orr was/is one heck of a fighter. He’s another good heavy. He’s even score double digit goals I think.

  76. hate to break this to you, Manny, but as someone who played junior hockey for 7 years, I can guarantee you there are plenty of guys I came up with that you’d proudly label “enforcers” and not a one of them could play worth a damn. they existed solely because they were larger than other players. there’s this myth that these goons are, like, elite goal scorers at lower levels of hockey and find as they get older that, like a sidearm pitcher, the only way they can hang in the upper echelon of the sport is to develop a gimmick. in the case of your pure goon, that is absolutely not the case. by birth, they are gimmicks. there’s no hockey skill and they are generally little more than barroom tough guys in skates. and if you could find any guy who’s big and willing to learn to skate he will be able to do exactly what any other “enforcer” can do. so yeah, to hell with John Scott. it’s not as if there aren’t literally hundreds and hundreds of other guys in the system who couldn’t do the same thing.

  77. CARP,

Serious question here: Does The Kreider hold his own in a fight against John Scott?

  78. I’m not saying John Scott is the *best* fighter of all time. Just saying he could go toe to toe with the best of them. There are plenty of smaller guys that are faster than him and can probably “fight” better than him. But he’s just so flipping big.

I mean Terry O’Reilly was 6’1″, 220. Dale Hunter was 5’10”!!! Joey Kocur was 6’0″. Those guys are some of the best but they are tiny compared to John Scott. Even Probert was only 6’3″.

I would love to see John Scott fight Stu Grimson (6’6″, 240lb). That’s probably fair. Grimson would lay him the eff out.

  79. Rangers 3 Flyers 1
    GWG Brassard
    Rangers shots 23
    Flyers shots 27
Btw wishin my son (baby vibz) a happy 26th (-20) birthday! Cant believe he’s already (twenty) 6 years old! But he bleeds blue just the same LETS GO RANGERS!!!

  80. Oh, Lloyd played hockey so we should all listen to everything he has to say.

So sick of that argument. On both sides of the coin.

  81. Manny, I’m telling you something a person who never played juniors (or better) wouldn’t likely know. I mean, you’re more than welcome to think you know every facet of the sport because you watch games on your wife’s iPad Mini but there’s some real-life data out there that may prove useful to consider when forming your arguments.

  82. Pimp – I hope your boy shows up to play tonight.

Zucc didn’t set the bar to high for him to steal his job.

  83. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

If Scott gets anything more than 10 games, kessel deserved 20 for the stick swinging incident.

Scott keeps getting nhl jobs, so some people still think he has value!

  84. 1.57% said the Scott/Dorsett tiff was a tie. Dors listed at 6’0? Try 5’9 and 3/4. Game little monkey, though.

  85. Good evening all….Yeesh, this team is like the pre-winning Sox…cursed. I will not place bets on score, don’t care what it is as long as we win. Come on Talbot!!! If we lose to to the Sniders I will cry so loud you will hear me across the globe…

  86. Can’t make it Oct 31; I’m going door to door as Pyatt. If I win, give my tickets to one of the girls.

  87. Oh dear, reading some of this thread, we need a ref, and some penalties….Oh yes! Season has begun!

  88. Glen Sather has played in the league and believes Derek Dorsett is a valuable hockey player so someone who hasn’t played in the league can’t argue with Glen Sather!

  89. FYI the Rangers had 30 shots, ORR. Phlyers had 27. You were close because the Phlyers had 25 shots that didn’t go in the net.
