It’s Go Time! … Rangers at Capitals

[polldaddy poll=7482051 align="left"]
Game 6.caps
Rangers at Capitals.

Finally, a game against a team from the Leastern Conference and the Lesstropolitan Division.

First meeting since Game 7 last spring.

Ya boys play their sixth in a row on the road (12th counting preseason). This, by comparison, is Washington’s fifth home game of the season.

The Rangers will be without Michael Del Zotto (flu), Rick Nash (concussion) and Carl Hagelin (shoulder). Hence they will have no pruchas. Cam Talbot dresses as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup, and J.T. Miller goes into the lineup up front. He should see second-unit power-play time, while John Moore goes with the first unit on the point with Brad Richards.

Washington’s power play leads the NHL at 36.4 percent … your NYR are paddling along at a very acceptable 23.5 percent, tied for 10th. Alex Ovechkin has six goals and three assists in six games, with three PPG and a whopping 42 shots on goal.

LIVE CHAT THURSDAY: We will host a live chat here Thursday at noon. Be there. Or else. Reminders to follow.

Also, please don’t forget to vote for the Three Rangers Stars in the poll on the left.

Don’t quite understand why they went with Brahms’ Hungarian Dances for that Ovechkin piece.

  4. wasn’t NBC’s rivalry highlights out of sequence. I think the “Can You Hear Us? was in 2012 or 2011. Then the Game 7 they showed, Lundqvist’s second straight shutout, Zuccarello goal, was last year.

    LETS GO!!!! LETS GO!!!!

  6. hard for me to believe some of you guys rate-hate the Capitals ahead of the Flys, Devils, Penguins and Islanders. But that’s just me.

  7. Lets be honest these last 4 on road are vital to season. Starts tonight.

Columbus was 5-13-2 missed playoffs by a point.

We go 1-8 we might never recover prior to a home game. Even 2-7 isn’t good enough.

Truth is no more messing around. We need pts

  8. What’s the over/under on penalties taken by Dorsett and Falk tonight?

As a follow up, how many of those penalties lead to Caps PP goals?

  9. It’s really a combo of being friends with some moronic and uninformed Caps fans and recent history being as it is, Carp.

  10. Can’t wait for name that squirt or this guy played pee wee hockey in Regina and then his echl days.

  11. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Lets gogogo gog og ogog ogogoo!!!

LETS GO LETS GO hello Carp LETS GO LETS GO LETS GO!!!!!!!!!

  12. Just hoping Rechlicz who went punch for punch with Lucic in the pre-season decided to take the game off.

  13. Wow. Look at how good Backstromcis. Shooting pucks I to an empty net in a poorly lit arena. Ugh.

  14. they make MSG look pretty good, Duguay, Pidto and all, don’t they, Cally? And I like Eddie a lot, know him really well, and am friends with Doc and Pierre.

  15. do you think the caps players are
threatened with bag skates if they
    don’t participate in the Geico

  16. Agreed, Carp. I’m under the impression that Sam and Joe get too much hate around these parts anyway. But uh oh, you’re not going to tell those two about anything we’ve said here, are you??

  17. I’m not much of a systems guy, but “all losing your man” is a bad thing when playing man-to-man coverage, right?

  18. Penguins and Flyers are definitely at the top of my list. I get far more upset when we lose to those teams, moreso than the caps

  19. Good evening all! Skating in late from work….really, a late start for two metrosexual teams????

  20. I don’t understand why players still take hooking penalties with the exception of preventing a breakaway or odd-man rush. You KNOW if you put the stick parallel to the ice into the hands they’re gonna call it. WHY THEY HELL WOULD YOU DO IT THEN? Same thing with slashing, holding, etc.

  21. I preferred it when the Caps’ PP in the playoffs had Ribeiro holding the puck and refusing to shoot for 90 seconds.

  22. I can’t decide if the rangers defense is playing better or is it the competition where west teams are much better than the east teams.

  23. I swear I knew Doc was gonna make some byfuglein stupid aasen dog comment when he mentioned Beagle. What a hack.

  24. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Waffle boarded away…now thats funny. Its better then those MORONS in California . Those announcers are idiots and the people then have on during halftime to talk…are NOBODYS!!

IM still upset and have a sour taste from the west coast disaster!!! Carp is west really that much better then the Leastern?

    RAAAAAAAAAAAANGERS kill these bums!!!

  25. AV told Falk he needs to play a bit meaner to stay in the NHL, so he goes and fights in the next game. Not sure that’s what they drew up.

  26. Was that a case of the Rangers playing a good period, or the Caps playing a bad one? A little bit of both?

  27. Good period. What was so good I mean it wasn’t terrible but far from good. These guys are a joke

  28. Olga Folkyerself on

    Worst teams?
    Flyers-by far.
Habs- too many Cups, too many wins over NY
Devils- by a nose over the Isles.

  29. I thought the Rangers played well. Not so many lost assignments. Very fast on the puck. Getting pucks deep. Now just need better sustained pressure and better shots.

  30. You want to talk about bad replays, look at FOX. Every replay is an extra slow-mo shot of trivial things like baseball players slapping each other on the butt or an extra zoom shot of a player’s face. Dreadful

  31. Rangers look much better, could be the opponent…and they won 90% oif the faceoffs, makes a big difference (they lost most of them to the Blues) Still haven’t scored…it will come if they keep the play in the Caps’ end of the ice.

  32. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

No determination can accurately be made till after the game. A win is a win and a loss is a loss egg egg egg egg egg

  33. Stranger Nation on

Zucc looks horrible; beniot balls pullout is worthless
Miller and Fast taking body – much better forecheck. Penalties had us on our heels during last 5 mins of period

    Brass best player on ice

  34. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Family time watching the croods, so watching the dvr’d game later.

Can’t wait to see indispensable Norris winner Stralman (according to some of you brilliant hockey minds) score a Hattie!!!

  35. Stranger Nation on

Dorsett had Moore and Girardi with him and was ahead of play – should have shot, just had poor aim

  36. Good period in that their not behind. They’ve been outscored 7-2 in first periods so far this year. Looking a little more like a Torts D too.

  37. Zucc had his stick slashed out of his hands. No mention by the broadcasters, no call either

  38. I admire Richards’ desire to put the puck on net every chance he gets, but come on, his shot is to weak to beat NHL goalies from the blue line.

  39. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Moore with the nice back check. But, is this what we can expect from him or is he rusty?

  40. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

nice pass, Cally. Some good things going on here. Some bad, too. But, this is progress.

  41. Here’s the issue we lack Finishing.Too many guys who just can’t score

    Zucc brassard Pyatt Boyle

  42. Stranger Nation on

Moore had nice move comign down off pt on pp to keep it alive. PP constrained by Richards presence on pt.

  43. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Eric, how many years have you needed to say that? We did have a 40 goal scorer once, you know.

  44. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

    He speaks Latin in Russian

Protons look negative compared to him.

    He eats uncooked brown rice

    Stay thirsty my friends

  45. Does anyone know where Dan Girardi played Juniors? I have a feeling we will hear before the period is over.

  46. Boyle was just trying to get his stick on the puck
and not do a rub-it-in-your-face move ala hertl
    ya carcillo mcguire!!

  47. Staal put Miller in a low percentage position there. Hope AV doesn’t look at that as Miller “losing a puck battle.”

  48. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Manny, agreed. Points are secondary. This is the beginning of working out the new ‘style’. Better total team ‘d’ coverage, not flawless, but better.

And does Hank look like he’s rounding into form, or what?

  49. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

MAZ = rag doll. The guy drops and flops. Dangles and bangles. Falls in the halls. Hits he deck with his neck.

    He freaking is too small.

  50. Tremendous Freudian slip by AV — “we are working very hard, doing everything we can to PREVENT our scoring.”

  51. Nice sympathetic phrasing of concussion recovery by Pierre there, implying that Nash had to “get his wits about him”.

  52. you wonder (and hope)
    that the Rangers learn
    from that goal
    and stop with the slapshots
    that aren’t attracting
    teammates going for rebounds

  53. Anywho, re: Stralman.

I would rather have Falk and Del Zaster than Stralman. But I would rather have almost anything over Stralman.

  54. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Gaborik trade loooookin reaaaaally good right now!!!!

  55. Rewind your DVR. Nice little pinch by McDonagh like a full 1:00 before the goal made everything possible.

  57. well, I learned one thing tonight. The rangers division is weak, pens are not as good as they’ve been over the years, the rest of the division from what I’ve seen aren’t that good. The western conference teams are very good.

  58. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

And Shero wouldn’t be watching a number 27 on the white shirted team, or a number 21, would he?

  59. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

So, anyone notice that our defense has better balance with the addition of just one guy that can actually fight and clear the crease? Not so sure Falk is the answer, but the concept is working. Having physical deterrents are simply a part of hockey.

  60. Like that play from Fast. Saw Boyle open in the slot for a split second, but recognized WSH covered him, so he held onto the puck and made the safe pass back up to the point. From what I’ve seen of him in preseason and the NHL, the kid doesn’t panic with the puck.

  61. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Sorry, Boyle does so many important things for this team. He is an unsung hero.

  62. Richards looks great. At this point we might be able to trade that front loaded contract with low salary and high cap hit to a floor team like the NYIslanders.

  63. Olga Folkyerself on

“It hit him right in the mask”
“He had no chance to see that puck”

Are they talking to each other?

  64. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

It is VERY early, Carp. But Rocket has started this season looking 2-3 years younger. I am very impressed by his offensive play. He’s got poise and confidence that he simply lacked last year. Good for him.

  65. Callahan is the ultimate teammate, isn’t he?

If Hank can learn anything, besides stick-handling, it’s how to be a teammate.

  66. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

That pass to himself off the boards in traffic was a very special play that lead to Cally’s goal. We had a bad angle on it, but he knew exactly what he was doing. No way he does that last year. No way.

  67. Doodie Machetto on

I’m just so scared of how well Richards is playing. God help us if Sather doesn’t amnesty him after the season.

  68. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Manny, the unfortunate thing is that Prusty complemented him perfectly, so he was even better. I, too, miss that guy. Those two had a special chemistry.

Matter of fact, if Boyle is an FA, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him look to rejoin #8. Prust saying.

  69. Doodie Machetto on

I really don’t like what I’ve seen from Pouliot and MZA. I kinda liked Pouliot against St. Louis. He had a lot of second chances around the net, and I thought that might be the precursor to some goals. Tonight, trying to be too cute again.

MZA, it seems like every shift he’s complaining to the ref. Not a good look on him.

  70. Rangers outshot Caps 21-6 in the 2nd period.

    That’s how you win games.

The greater shot difference between 2 teams indicates greater possession of the puck for the team outshooting the opposition.

  71. I have always hated zucc from first time I saw him. What does he do well.?

    Shootout slowed down

  72. The guys I would replace with kids would be: Benoit Balls, Dom Moore, Pyatt and Zucc. Also Stralman

  73. I would bring up Hrivik, Miller, Fast, Kreider and Mcllrath with Haley and Mashinter.

Let ’em work. Let ’em live.

  74. I’m sure as the season goes on there will be changes, it’s early yet and the team is learning a new system as the new coach and gm figure out how to improve the team.

  75. Stranger Nation on

Norris Stralman playing on #1 pair with McD – holy underwear!
Trade MED for a Bruising Righty Dman

  76. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Seriously, it is a good arena. Especially the Club seats. They are great. ‘Free’ food and all.

  77. They have those embarrassing ice girls at the rock. Super embarrassing when they dance in the aisles.

  78. None of this possible without Lunqvist’s great play — good to see him making big saves again.

  79. iDoodie Machetto on

Best part about that second period is that it was better than the first. Good teams get better as the game goes on.

  80. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Stranger? Next GM of the Rangers!!!! Right on, brutha!! Bone crushing righty d-man.

  81. I thought pooalot and D Moore were going to be a solid upgrade over powe and Halpern but thusly they look like the same guys.

  82. Stranger Nation on

Richards making plays either on PP or when D is exhausted after killing off PP
    We Won’t be fooled again!

  83. I would be embarrassed if my mom was as bald as Pierre. As long as it was natural and she was healthy otherwise.

  84. Finally caught up with the live action, WOW cally has some sick hands! Richie leading the team in points…no one tell Sather that!

  85. Richards has convinced me of little except he can put a pass on a stick so long as no one is near him, and ditto on shots when no one is around him. Like a West Point basketball player who is deadeye in his driveway, but has difficulty when in real game and defensed.

  86. Olga Folkyerself on

Every time I see Pierre between the benches I think “Who turned on the flesh colored light bulb?”

  87. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

No doubt, THe Craps came out with some anger this period. The question is what is our teams response? Do we have ANYONE that can be tough? Don’t tell me Dorsett.

  88. Don’t you mean Nick Foligno, eddie? And what about that kid who went and died on us? I guess he could be considered a Rangers killer too..

  89. It’s a reckless penalty at a minimum. If the ref really saw that and said it was incidental and nothing else, that’s a bleeping joke.

  90. Not saying it wasn’t dirty. Just saying that the replay they showed isn’t convincing. The Rangers sure think it was dirty.

  91. iDoodie Machetto on

I would’ve said accident as well if it wasn’t for the explosion of his arms after the contact.

  92. If this game is safe late, Brouwer better get blasted. Extra stride if need be, it’s not getting called anyway.

  93. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

At a minimum, Carp. Honest, we all know Brower saw his head and went for it. Too many head shots going on. That was one.

Perhaps teams take the liberty of doing it against us because we are relatively defenseless.

  94. God d-word I’m pissed off right now. Just another round of finding-the-reasonable-doubt on a hit that doesn’t desert that benefit.

  95. Brouwer went right for his head intentionally, that’s how I saw it. Stepan didn’t even have the puck and was back skating and Brouwer on his way to the bench went right for his head.

  96. At least NBC have shown the replay multiple times so we can get a clearer picture of what happened. Otherwise we’d almost be in the dark about an incident that has injured a key player.

  97. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Agreed. SOMEONE has to stand up to Brower and Stuart. Someone.

    Zucc’s?????? Anyone.

  98. (I assume dammit is ok here but paired with god I’d rather err with caution. Totally Shanahan’d that one.)

  99. And for the incidental BS, if he “incidentally” turned on a line change and that was Laich, is that how they make contact? Give me an f’ing break.

  100. Rule should be you sit out as long as injured player is out. If injured player has to retire, your suspended for life from hockey. Get a job like the rest of us.

  101. Being a fan of this team is torturous, at best. Even this victory carries dire consequences. Such a joke.

  102. League is completely out of control. That was definitely a head shot as Step didn’t move, te head was the principal. Point of contact and brower made no effort to avoid it and step was defenseless.

And he is definitely concussed so now we are without two of out top forwards for a few more weeks. Ridiculous. Soon there will be no talent left in the league.

  103. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Torts: “you guys keep talking about me like that and I’ll come over and rip you a $($($($ing new #(#(#(#(!

  104. The Rangers medical staff must be miracle workers since they got such an injured, key player back on the bench so quickly.

  105. Slatsko Folkyerself on

“Rule should be you sit out as long as injured player is out. If injured player has to retire, your suspended for life from hockey.”

Nominee for “Dumb of the Month”.

  106. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

So, I guess Step will have to go take care of business with Brower and hopefully not get concussed.

  107. I’m glad I was wrong, obviously Stepan wasn’t concussed but that head shot by Brouwer was dirty.

  108. So MZA just got interfered with in very much the same way Chompers interfered with Laich and no call.

  109. Same, Latona. Unless he says it rattled his collarbone or something just give him the 14:00 off.

  110. If that check by Richards was a penalty in 75-79 the Canadiens would not have won 4 straight Cups.

  111. Wow The Doctor. Mine is Chris Neil number one. Then a huge huge gap and guys like Konopka, Hendricks and Erskine.

  112. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Well, it’s time for that vaunted 2nd Goose Martini.

Chilled glass. Three olives. Cheers, boys!!

  113. Re: Stepan’s head shot – When is a penalty not called a penalty because the perpetrator “didn’t mean it?” Gimme a break.

  114. Oh my god in my anger I forgot about my fish chowder on the stove and ruined it. If I didn’t have more in the fridge, I might have driven (fast) to DC and hit Brouwer myself (with my car or a weapon but not my fists by any means).

  115. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Our puck pursuit has been good this game. Caps are gonna have nightmares tonight.

  116. Two shifts for Fast in the 3rd, none since around five minutes in. Guess we’ve found another coach who doesn’t “roll four lines” when protecting a lead late in the third period.

  117. I like this quick line changes. Obviously weighted towards the better defenders but getting everyone our there a bit.

  118. Yea. I take back everything I said about Dom Moore. He’s been very good since I criticized him.

  119. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Hank: “Not now, boys. This is an extra $100k per year here. Please play some ‘d’ “.

  120. OMG, Callahan with the major Gaffe in the slot in front of lundqvist which almost lead to a craps goal.

  122. I wish someone did a study on the value of shooting at the EN beyond “ITS WRONG AND SELFISH!!!”

  123. You’re right Carp. I’m eating a huge plate of crow. I guess I just haven’t seen these Guys play with a lead. Ever.

  124. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Hank played well. The team played well.

    We win the cup!!!

Sather’s a genius!!! Extend Sather and Rocket!!!!

  125. That was awesome. Definite progress. Much better defense. Much better style with the lead. Awesome.

  126. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

So, if we win 70% of our games against the eastern teams and none against the west, do we make the playoffs??????

  127. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

But I do recall having the roll 4 lines discussion with you last season ….I think vs the islanders…..

  128. well, now that I’ve seen the metropolitan division play since I’m getting a free preview of center ice I have to say the rangers should take second or 3rd place in there division. The craps don’t impress me one bit and the rangers have done well against them the past few years. The islanders are the islanders, nothing has changed there with the islanders, flyers aren’t any good, devils, eh. Columbus reminds me of the rangers of past years.

  129. We are in their heads on the pp. Ovechkin must see McDonough in his sleep. Glad to shutout the Caps three straight.

  130. Hank with THREE shutouts in a row against these Caps (including games 6 and 7 from last spring). Incredible.

  131. Finally AV realized it’s McDonuts and Girardi. Took him long enough. Sorry, AV, but let’s gdamn face it!

  132. Not encouraging to see Steps go off and no retal. I think AV wanted this W so much, he held them down. I hope.

  133. Glad they won, but still a lot to work on in the D zone. Way too many screw ups early in the game. Against a better team, they’d get killed if they played like that.

On the other hand, the wingers were playing a bit deeper in the zone to help cover the slot. Also they played more simple hockey, like the last two years, just playing along the boards and firing it on goal to get rebounds/tips. That’s what this roster needs to do. Just have to hope they can do it when they play better teams.

  134. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Richie really took a bite outta the big apple tonight!!

    Rangers – 2 Wash – Neigh

  135. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Pierre: “Brad, you’ve scored 90 points or more in this league, yet sucked last year. You have confidence back in your game. Why is this year so different??”

Rocket: “Well, I was a bit pre-occupied with the lockout (did I tell you I hate Torts now?), and didn’t have a chance to prepare for the season as I usually do (did I tell you Torts had no idea what I went through?) and was behind the 8-ball when I started the season (you DID hear he had no tolerance for that didn’t you?). So, I was a bit slower than usual (they now call me ‘The Rocket’) and I feel I can pass and shoot (did I tell you Torts totally gave up on me?) like in the past. I also had a tiff with the coach. “

  136. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

and I voted!!!!! Yeah games not complete untill ya vote!!!

  137. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Every chance in the world to prove what he had. He just had nothing last year.

Nice to see him start the year like this. Quite surprising.

  138. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

ORR , be satisfied , we suck . Our new system , new coaches , new expectations , no home games , no Nash … and we won tonight? Yeahhhh!!!

  139. Matt "GetWellNasher"Boy on

Gotta wonder. If Richards played like this last year, is Torts STILL the coach of the Rangers???????????????????

  140. Johnson Mucklerself on

Well, that narrows it down to a few hundred… I won’t get too many guesses if I’m wrong, though.

  141. Graves – First time in over a YEAR Richie Rich falls of the WBM!!!

History has been made……..this is what cups are made of!!!!!

  142. Nice win for a change…even if they played a sucky team, needed this for some team confidence. The time off showed, they seemed to have some energy in this one. Looking forward to back-to-back wins! We need a winning streak!

  143. Great to see them preserve the shutout for Henrik! Richards seems to have re-found his game, may be a difficult decision at season’s end, particularly if Nash ends up with serious PCS. An unbridled victory!

  144. The Hat Trick………..

Govt. back to work…….Rangers back to work. ……games over before 11:00 PM.

  145. Johnny Moore looked good tonight.

    Nice win all around!!!!

Only 2 under .500 we can still save this road trip…. 9 points still doable!

  146. The Transylvanian’s tailor should have told him he looks taller and thinner with his car seat properly covered.

  147. And as for the Brouwer hit, you guys are kidding yourself if you think that was intentional. He was watching the puck the whole way and when it got chipped up ice, he saw Stepan at the last second and put his hands up to brace for impact. Anyone who has been in that kid of situation knows its just a natural reaction when you see you are about to run into someone and don’t have time to avoid it.

Completely unintentional. If he did that intentionally, he would’ve run his shoulder right into his head a la Cooke/Savard.

  148. Well Carp. it has come to this. Seeing this discussion and opinion page growing in leaps and bounds over the years, and I’ve been a contributor when I had something I felt like saying.. not particularly anything that others were frothing at the ears to read. As you know I’ve always made a point of picking out the “olden days” of the NHL with some of the greats of the past as for incidents of praise for the league back then. yES I ADMIRED “B0NNIE pRINCE cHARLEY” Chuck
Rayner, and TUrk Broda of the Leafs and his stacked pad slides to break up plays, and when a hit of a guy into the boards regardless of the violence factor was a foul and was penalized with a trip to the penalty box. Yes I saw the greats of those days, Rocket Richard, Boom Boom Geoffrion, the Bentley brothers Max and Doug, and many others. I admit that the players today are bigger, faster, and afr better paid than then, but it was still a wounderous period’

My personal opinion of the modern boarding incidents whether players are injured or not, and endangered unnessesarilly, should have no place in this game. The league could put a stop to it, and I believe it would make for a better game in the long run. I did not know of Boyle going from
    Rangers…\How did that happen?

Just recently I saw the name of Kaleta show up in the TV comments and wonder it was part of the Kaleta who played year ago for the Black Hawks, and that name was either Max or Henrik if memory serves me right…they also called him
(“Killer) Kaleta. He may have also played for Rangers…this I am not certain of. In final….it’s a great game and league…..but it could be better.
