With Ryan Callahan ready to return, Rangers assign J.T. Miller to Hartford

From the NYR:

NEW YORK, October 5, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned forward J.T. Miller to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Miller, 20, registered one shot on goal, was credited with one hit and one blocked shot, and logged 11:58 of ice time in the Rangers’ season opener on Thursday at Phoenix. He has recorded two goals and two assists in 27 career regular season games with the Rangers. Last season, Miller made his NHL debut on February 5 at New Jersey, and became the first Ranger to post a multi-goal game as a teenager since 1992 with a two-goal performance in his second NHL appearance on February 7 against the NY Islanders.

The 6-1, 205-pounder returns to Hartford where he registered eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points, along with 29 penalty minutes in 42 games last season. Miller ranked third among team rookies in goals and assists, and tied for fourth in points. He was selected to represent the Eastern Conference at the 2013 AHL All-Star Game on January 28.

The East Palestine, Ohio native was originally selected by the Rangers as a first round choice, 15th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

  1. and pretty soon, no Fast. its possible that Hartford’s top 6 may be better than the Rangers top 6.

  2. I would go along with that, Fast and Miller have done well but you know what you get with Asham and a pinch of sand.

  3. leetchhalloffame on

This is BS. Sending every kid down to Hartford and keeping NHL dregs like Pyatt, Aasham, Richards. Let the NHL draft lottery watch begin.

  4. I’m too many time zones away to know how that rep of Vigneault’s is really deserved, but Edler, Kesler, Raymond, Hansen and Hodgson were regulars in Vancouver by their age 22 seasons and their recent draft lists don’t scream out as having too many prospects who might have been held back (maybe Hodgson, Grabner and Schroeder?)

And they’ve had a contending team full of veterans for several years.

  5. Hope this doesn’t mean Richie goes back to center. He actually looked better on offensive wing. On Defense, he was, as usual, offensive (in the other meaning of the word)

  6. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Re the last thread and the ducks D man trade, I wasn’t implying getting a top 6 guy necessarily in the deal but a forward with size and grit that can play plus maybe clear some cap space.

Did anyone ever stop to think maybe our young prospects just aren’t that good? I mean does anyone really think AV wants to lose games and play inferior players? Maybe, just maybe the dregs in the line up are the best option…whether we like it or not.

  7. Wick, thumbs up to your second paragraph. When an accomplished coach makes a decision, we should ask ourselves, ‘hmmm, let me try to assemble the big picture on why he did that,’ rather than “what an idiot.” Doesn’t mean he is correct, but he probably is, since his livelihood and reputation hinge on those decisions.

  8. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

Coos, a lot of your comments are not only hilarious but dead on. The second sentence at 1:12pm, really had me smiling :)

  9. also … and I’ve said this before … NHL coaches like guys like Pyatt. I know you guys tend to think of them as piles of garbage. But coaches like big, responsible players.

  10. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

The 1:26 and 1:34 comments also dead on.

I went to the Dervils/Rangers preseason game 2 weeks ago. At best the Ranger prospects looed average. The Devils prospects were, in general, more gifted and talented. They had young players, yet, that I had never heard of.

Perhaps anything to do with our popular organization is a tad, let’s say, overhyped. Including our prospects.

  11. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

So, coining a new term, Richards plays ‘offensive defense’.

  12. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

Look at how far we have come over the last few weeks:

Richie Rocket (aka Richards) plays wing (no longer center) and is a top 6 player (according to AV, “with Callie and Hags out of the lineup; and Step and Brass centering”) who plays ‘offensive defense’!

Now, if that ain’t worth $6M per year, what is????????????

  13. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

It allows for a lot of ‘slate cleaning’, which, as AV says, is a good thing.

  14. Fans: ‘Who is responsible for this chit?’

Uh, they say Dominik Moore is responsible.

  15. Just saw ‘Deliverance’ again on TCM. I didn’t realize that Darryl Sutter was a movie star.

  16. I think having Cally back will make a difference. He will bring some energy and cohesiveness to the team. That has to help, or am I just talking myself into it?

  17. Coos, that is hysterical, I think I know which scenes you are referring to, Ned Beatty’s Beau?

  18. And, yes, Cally is this team’s spark plug IMO. Have to go all the way down to Asham to find even a semblance of another.

  19. The Kreider probably would have been better served playing junior hockey in Canada rather than Phillips Andover and BC.

  20. Coaches like players such as Pyatt because they are prone to choosing experience over youth, even if the experience does not provide any quality.

A coach’s primary interest is in keeping his job. A coach does not get second guessed as much when choosing experience over youth.

  21. I watched the Columbus game and the Colorado game yesterday.

It is definitely good to watch other teams to give you some perspective. There are a lot of good hockey teams out there.

Colorado has some good skaters. Those really high draft picks can help an organization if they are made well.

  22. Anybody see Anisimiv and Gaborik light the lamp last night? PA Parenteu too. Also, John Mithcell has as many goals as the entire Rangers squad.

Shocked to see JT sent down. I don’t think it’s a kid issue since Fast stayed. But I do agree that I would rather have Haley up.

4th line of Haley-Boyle-Dorsett is very solid.

  23. Like to see Dorsett on the third line, Ash, Boyle, and Haley on fourth. Welcome back, Manny!

  24. What is admirable about Dorsett, Ash, and Haley is that they seem to play tough, but more disciplined, making them a more valuable trio. Dorsett has more offensive upside, but Ash can shoot it if fed.

  25. Couple few years ago, opponents hated coming into MSG. Now, not so much, to put it mildly.

  26. we need to turn off the hot water in opponents dressing rooms.

Then skate around like sissies . that will do it.

  27. “We’re not rough, and we’re not tough, but we turned off the hot water, and that’s enough!”

  28. Rob in Beantown on

No games this weekend is BRUTAL indeed. If Monday’s game is going to be a 10:30 start, the least they could do would be put it on the weekend.

  29. MSG investing 60 trillion dollars in food courts, ice remains gar bage. And team opens season with 9 game road tour to accommodate roast beef sandwich stations.

  30. President suggests that Redskins change their name. Says he knows more about basketball than football. He thinks a crossing pattern has to do with DON’T WALK signals.

  31. How you feeling, Mannu?

Maybe AV sent down JT because he thought JT stood for John Tortorella and that conflicted with the whole Clean Slate thing.

  32. ‘The whole world is festering with unhappy souls

  35. Matt Harvey is from my hometown. I can have my relatives get in touch with his relatives and look into it.

  36. Most of you guys who live in the Big City, when you get a leaf that lands on your balcony, you call the Super to come up the elevator with a leaf blower.

  37. Matt Harvey and The Kreider really do look similar. I heard Harvey on the Dan Patrick Show, painful interview, didn’t want to talk about anything but the brand he was promoting. It was tough to listen to, yet I couldn’t change the channel. DP actually apologized for wasting everyone’s time.

  38. Harvey has really learned early to be a consummate off-field self promoter. It’s distasteful. I wish, however, that the Kreider would become more distasteful. Maybe that’s a part of what’s missing.

  39. Poor Harvey’s making under 500 grand through 2015. He may never be the same, but others have come back from similar surgeries. Still, he has to be nervous with all that innate talent and no guarantees.

Tee it up! Int’l team might make this interesting tomorrow. Hope so. Only like USA chants during hockey games.

  45. Pyatt and Fast are skating, Kreider gets sent down…..

Is that really the best thing for the Rangers right now?

  46. coos (I'm on a diet) on

You’ll know when the opposing winger is unchecked in the neutral zone. :)

  47. This team needs a d-man who plays an NHL caliber game the way we thought McIlrath would and a 20 goal scoring(at least)and hard hitting version of Pyatt. Should be super easy to get in a trade. Offer up Falk and Stu B and every team in the league will line up to trade whatever they done gots. Maybe offer up Richards to heat up the bidding wars.

  48. The guy who wrote the script said, ‘Trust me, I’m an artist and an English Major,” and Kreids fell for it.

  49. It almost seems like the team should assign a full-time hockey coach to Kreider.

A head shrinker who knows hockey………………

Not much of a gamble for a $750 million dollar team.

  50. There have been numerous tough, very effective, even hallowed D men in the NHL of lore who were as slow or slower than Bick and/or McIlrath. Today, everything is speed.

  51. All Kreider needs is a black beard, a sneer, and a pair of brass knuckles and most fans will put up with all his wandering deficiencies.

  60. LOL Brooks says Probert “contracted brain disease.” As if he wasn’t crazy before his first NHL shift.

  62. Rob in Beantown on

Thanks NFL. If you didn’t black out the Giants game in Boston I might have felt compelled to watch it.

  63. I don’t want to eliminate fighting from the game. I grew up with it and I enjoy it.

However real simple to remove it from the game.

Player who intentionally engages in a fight recieves a 2 game suspension ( current game and next scheduled game) AND your team plays short a skater during the suspension.

    Agree CDubbb.

    This is BRUTAL.

  64. 5 teams ( Buffalo, Rangers, Philthy, Nashville & Edmonton) without points.

Who will be the last man standing?

    I say Rangers.

  65. HA!! HA!! watching replay of islander/bluejackets game from last night. Goring said early in the third period that the islanders learned from making the playoffs last year how not to blow a 2 goal lead and that they will win the game. Hey Butch, they blew a 2 goal lead and lost the game, try again. What a moron. I thought Chico was horrible but this guy gives chico a run for his money.

  82. Interesting conjecture, Wick. Nash has been complaining (on ice) about uncalled interference, harassment, and being pushed around since he got here. He finally blew his cool. We need someone nasty on the first line or first D who will not accept it. Might help Richie to play with a little more grit, too, though unlikely, very unlikely.

  83. That Nash fight made it clear. This team misses Dubinsky. We have no one that will stand up for their teammates by engaging in a center ice hugfest.

the thing with Dubinsky at $4.2 or whatever it is, he’s still top six on this team right now. way more legit than Hagelin or Zuccarello and especially the guy whose cap hit is $6.7M, and probably the New No. 16, too.

No doubt, Dustin and friends are shaking in their boots!

Then AV says Asham cleared waivers so he told him that 30 other teams didn’t want him.

Again, Dustin Brown and comrades shaking, I’ll tell ya.

(You can’t make this stuff up!)

    i’m old school too
saw Crowes open for Aerosmith on
    that band’s tour supporting “Pump”

did a meet-and-greet with the boys from Boston
but still haven’t met any Crowes yet
did interview drummer and Rich Robinson
    over the years
and got some great shots of ’em
from recent shows in pittsburgh and
    Lockn’ festival

Now Ashram is not the answer to life’s problems, but he has the grit game and a nice wrister if provided some space. Would take him over Pyatt ever game and twice on Sunday

  144. Dale Weise, another one that got away. Anisimov, Gaborik, Dubinksy, The Prust, John Mitchell, PA Parenteau…….

Not for nothing as no one will be watching, but having Fouts do the color on the Raiders/Bolts game is akin to Aikman doing a Gmen gig.
How bad are these football announcers? Wow, just wow.

  146. There’s a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right

    And it’s very far away
But it’s growing day by day
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right

They can tell you what to do
But they’ll make a fool of you
And it’s all right, baby, it’s all right

Coos – put a banger with a scorer and a passer is a tried and true approach that got Gilles in the HOF. Instead at LW he have the options of Bucky or MZA…

  148. The boys just need to get into a better timing offensively. Crashing the net in unison. Like a ballet. Like an ocean if rolling waves crashing into the shore.

  149. And he’ll bump people who bother Nash, Strange. Glad there’s one person willing to experiment with the unspoken.

  150. I’m 100% into getting a tough guy who can skate into the top line. Asham would be ok if his back is healthy. Dorsett can also skate but doesn’t have the hands. Need a quick little anger ball.

  151. Strange, Manny, Coos groovin’ on a good idea. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, but never up, never in.

Pullout is 6’3″, 200 lbs and has yet to hit anyone. He could be a very contributor if he plays with edge and starts hitting.
    His Scouting Report from THN

Assets: Has a wiry body and plenty of shiftiness in the attacking zone. Can put up good point totals when he’s on his game. Oozes talent and has National Hockey League size to boot.
Flaws: *Needs to use his big frame more to his advantage and bring forth a more consistent effort. Can take bad penalties, mainly due to laziness. Isn’t assertive enough in the NHL.*
Career Potential: Inconsistent, yet highly skilled winger.

  153. Romo had a great game….

But, he still broke his fan’s hearts at the end. Not a real bad pass, but with him…. its always something.

  154. Stranger Nation on

    key words from that report
    plus: wiry, shiftiness, oozes, boot
    minus: bad, inconsistent, laziness, unassertive

    Sorry for the delayed response…
    This is what Nash said

#NYR Nash on fight with Phoenix’ Hanzal after Stepan hit: “Just sticking up for a teammate. Doesn’t matter if it’s a clean hit or not.”

#NYR Rick Nash continued: “Fighting’s part of the game.”

    From zipay’s tweet thread

  156. Wick, we waited four hours on pins and needles to hear that Nash said “it’s part of the game?” :)

  157. from the team website………..

J.T. Miller scored two goals and added an assist in his first AHL game of the season, and Dylan McIlrath’s first pro goal was the third-period game-winner, as the Wolf Pack posted its first win of the season, 4-3 over the Albany Devils, Sunday at the XL Center.

Chris Kreider also scored for the Wolf Pack, and Danny Kristo had two assists. Albany got goals from Scott Timmins, David Wohlberg and Joe Whitney, and defenseman Jon Merrill assisted on all three.

  158. Sounds like the kids have gone down their and chosen to prove that they are good enough to call-up. If they can continue to dominate at that level then no reason to keep them there, Slats can see what guys like Pyatt, maybe Boyle & Asham can fetch and bring them up.
