It’s Go Time! … Rangers at Coyotes

[polldaddy poll=7441888 align="left"]

Game 1.coyotes
Rangers at Coyotes.

The start of the 2013-14 season and the Alain Vigneault era faces off with a nine-game road trip. Ya boys head to California for games in Los Angeles Monday, San Jose Tuesday and Anaheim next Thursday. Then St. Louis, Washington, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Detroit before the Oct. 28 home opener against Montreal.

Ya boys, of course, went 1-5 in the preseason with nine goals.

Means nothing tonight.

Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal. Ryan Callahan is out, but should play on the trip. Aaron Asham and Justin Falk are prucha’d.

Don’t forget to vote in the Three Rangers Stars poll after the game.

(Minus the “g” for the spelling police)

  2. He mentioned that he’s going in for a new pacemaker, eric. But he’s here. Hope he makes it through the game :)

  3. I’m steppin out to get a celebratory pint of ice cream!

We are going to win the Cup!!!!!!

  4. FWIW, I have not seen Pidto or Duguay at a single practice. Nice work ethic. Maloney, Albert, Micheletti, Rosen, Giannone are there all the time.

So Duguay’s going to give us inside info even though he probably hasn’t seen or spoken to any of these guys.

  5. According to Ron Duguay, Brad Richards is bigger, stronger, and faster. Ah yes, The Six Million Dollar Man!

  6. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

Carp/Caped Crusader – Did you get the photo of the shine box I sent you?

  8. Great, first four games are 10/10:30pm games and I have to get up at 4am. Oh well, DVR running. Good night and good luck folks!

  9. Hi guys!

Welcome back to another NYRangers season … one assuredly wrought with amateur-hour offense, Mickey-Mouse defense, and overall bush-league play quite typical of this dogs-breakfast-of-a-squad that moonlights as an NHL team … but hey, the no-talent clowns / court jesters could surprise!

    – Miami Pimp

Don’t want to seem pessimistic, but I already saw the view from the ledge.
Whoa!!! It’s a looooong way down!

  11. Izzy Mandlebaum on

Sam: What improvements have you made on the Power Play?
AV: Well, we put Richards on the point…

  12. Gomez’ goal was a thing of beauty. Nash only dreams he could score a goal that pretty.

God, I wish we had that man on this team. What a hockey god.

  13. Let’s go let’s go Let’s go Let’s go!!! Hope springs eternal at the start of each season!! The futures so bright we outta wear shades!! 3-1 rangers it

Sather walks into a bar with a dog under his arm. The dog is wearing a NY Rangers jersey and Slats is holding a Rangers pennant.

The bartender says, “Hey! No pets allowed in here! You’ll have to leave! ”

Sather begs, “Look I’m desperate. We’re both big hockey fans, my TV set is broken, and this is the only place we can see the game! ”

After securing a promise that the dog will behave and warning him that if there is any trouble they will be thrown out, the bartender relents and allows them to stay in the bar and watch the game.

The game begins with the Rangers winning the faceoff. They sweep across the blueline, fire a shot and it rings off the crossbar and in the net. With that the dog jumps up on the bar and begins walking up and down the bar barking and giving everyone a high-five.

The bartender says, “Wow that is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen! What would the dog do if they win a Cup?”

“I don’t know,” said Glen, “I’ve only had him for fourteen years.”

  25. Byfuglien already!!
    thanks to Center Ice
    i’m stuck with

  26. Can’t help but smile seeing Dom Moore back in a Rangers sweater.
Hopefully ill still feel that way after 25 games :/

Olga , I never did read it…I saw Sather ( rolls eyes ) and knew something ignorent was said . SO THERE!!!! BLAAAA!!

LETs gog gog go gog go gogoog!!!

    FIRE OLGA!!!!

  28. Olga Folkyerself on

Greg, you admit you don’t know anything about it and you still complain. You must be a republican.

  29. iManny of Steel on

Great advice by Joe. Keep the puck away from the Coyotes goalie. Don’t shoot! He can handle the puck!

  30. Lmgo Carp. Musta been all that golfing in Scarsdale. Glad he got his first give away out of the way early

  31. Doodie Machetto on

Highest win percentage in franchise history- I bet it’s the only coach with a percentage over .500.

  32. Lundqvist misplayed it, Stepan turns it over. Shoulda taken the Rangers deal when it was on the table Henrik.

  33. goalies who’ve spent decades being unable to handle the puck don’t suddenly learn how to handle the puck…in other words, that ship has sailed.

  34. and then you have Sam confusing “handles the puck a lot” with “handles the puck so well.”

  35. Olga Folkyerself on

Richards on the point. It’s a clean slate, but it still looks black.
    We’re doomed.

  36. Carp
    or anyone
    serious question
    is the ice slushy
and the reason why Rangers keep
    losing the puck or…?

  37. don’t really know anything about Benoit Pouliot but he played that odd-man rush like a moron

  38. I had a moment about 2 minutes ago where I realized Taylor Pyatt was still on this team and groaned involuntarily

  39. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Staal with the BIG HIT!!!!! Team Canada is lookin on feeling reaaaaal good ’bout that!!!

    Staal = Beast

  40. For 5 months I was stress free. This team can’t finish. Is gaborik available.

Del zaster in mid season form

  41. B-Rich to Stepan – “See that deep left corner in our zone? That is where I take my naps”

  42. Doodie Machetto on

I like that they are ready to break up ice for 3 on 2s. It would be better if they actually knew what to do on one.

  43. iManny of Steel on

Ugh. I’m trying to vote for Doan as a star of the game by he’s not listed. Any help?

  44. are we going to have
    to talk Gartner
    out of retirement
we can have at least one player
    who can

  45. Olga Folkyerself on

If they shoot every time and still don’t score on the PP, what will the Garden faithful yell?

  46. including the time Sam mis-ID’ed Richards as Nash, we probably heard them mention Pyatt more than Nash

  47. iManny of Steel on

Maybe the better tr but Smith was the better goalie. Which is why Hank directly helped the giveaway

  48. Pouliot doesn’t belong playing with Zucc and Brass…the guy is a 3rd or 4th liner and can’t finish…but, hopefully I’m wrong…

  49. I’m enjoying the fast pace. This style of hockey is sooo much more fun to watch…just sayin’

  50. At least their first game is definitely livelier than past season last.
Hope Hank won’t be a problem and soft Step will play better.

  51. Zucc 3rd line at best. Can’t finish either.

In the end it will be Moore for gabby. Brassard will be good then bad and Dorset is what he is.

  52. Micheletti seems like an amiable and knowledgeable guy, but someone has to tell him to STFU with his rambling stories about cows in Manitoba and 2 minute biographies of opposing players while the action is on. Sam is too polite.

  53. iManny of Steel on

If Brassard and Hobbit Wizard are going to play the second line they need some size there. Thus, Pouliot.

  54. Micheletti seems like a knowledgeable guy? Which Rangers broadcasts have you been watching?

  55. I didn’t like the Pouliot signing from the get-go. So, I’m looking for reasons to demote him…

  56. _Pouliot doesn’t belong playing with Zucc and Brassthe guy is a 3rd or 4th liner and can’t finish_

LOL as if Zucc a great finisher

  57. Stralman has a bit of a problem with positioning and he sure likes to shoot the puck to no avail. However, compared to Hamrlik, he’s Bobby Orr.

  58. HockeymanRangers on

Has any one said it yet. Did you see at the end of the interview Richards was drinking the Kool Aid.

  59. Stranger Nation on

at this rate, when cally and hags come back there will be one top 6 forward who weighs over 180 lbs; Nash. This team is so poorly constructed

  60. feels like complaints about virtual non-issues like the hybrid icing rule are a big part of the reason people think hockey players (like Ron Duguay) are really stupid

  61. So that Vancouver PPG was a one-timer from a D-man with a big shot, set up by the Sedins carrying it into the zone. Why couldn’t Sully draw up that play in the last four years?

  62. Stranger Nation on

I foresee this DQ ad becoming very annoying.

I guess nobody left the gate open this year?

  63. Given good manners you will go far.
You will live in happiness too,
    Like the oompa loompa do-ba-dee-doo.

  64. iManny of Steel on

That Phoenix scoring chance was totally set up by the space behind the net created by the shallower net.

  65. you don’t have to say “right there” when a player is literally smeared against the glass and falls to the floor, Joe

  66. iManny of Steel on

So the PP looks better although they give up more short handed chances playing like this.

  67. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    STAAL = BEAST!!!!

  68. holy carcillo!!!

Richards kept the puck in the zone
    Nash showed up
    made a nice pass
    and Staal finished

  69. Micheletti gave that exact same speech about the Rangers taking shots down the stretch of last season

  70. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    Team Canada conection wtg boys!!!

    WE needed that goal!!!!

  71. btw
    i missed it
    what was the deal
with MacD being off the bench?
checking if he knew today’s date and
    subtract backwards by 7?

  72. This 10-minute interview with one of the Coyotes’ new owners on their broadcast is interesting for their local viewers, I’m sure. Would’ve fit nicely in the 17-minute intermission.

  73. iManny of Steel on

I’m not a big fan of the diamond PK. It’s scary and I don’t think they have the D Men for it.

  74. NYR are consistently one of worst teams at both clearing puck out of their zone on the PK and keeping puck in the offensive zone on PP.

  75. well Carp
    think Girardi
    should have stayed up
    instead of sliding around
and watch the puck go by him?

  76. I blame the forward on the pk there who can’t move. Pyatt can’t skate what the hell is he doing anywhere near the pk

  77. Boyle moving around without his stick on the PK reminded me of a kid just learning to skate.

  78. Gotta love the replay showing Lundqvist and the Coyote player clearly in the crease, followed up immediately by the explanation that Lundqvist was out of the crease.

  79. Looks like Pyatt hasn’t killed penalties at all since 10/11 and the last time he was over two minutes of PK per game was his last year in Vancouver, whose coach was…

  80. Olga Folkyerself on

Korpikoski. Why did they trade this kid again?

Sather had the hots for Enver Lisen.

  81. iManny of Steel on

I can’t remember Richards ever playing Wing. His instincts for the net seem to have resurfaced from that position. Me likey

  82. BTW if you were paying attention, you would have noticed Richards and Stepan switched positions halfway though his period

  83. So far, things i’ve liked:

More creative breakouts (aka not going up the wall the whole game)

d-men not hesitating go in deep and play offense

having every shift in the zone not end with D-men sprawled out blocking shots

    things i haven’t liked through 2

    d-zone coverage

Boyles speed being really exposed (both physical and think speed) with our “new system”

  84. ‘That Staal family, I tear up, Joe, every time I hear their name.’

    “You’re right, Sam.’

  85. iManny of Steel on

I’m with Gravy. I think Richards is taking left side offensive zone fade offs. We all know how Vigneault loves his zone starts.

  86. iManny of Steel on

Yes Draxen. Like. Love. Breakouts. No more of that strong side breakout crap every single time. Inventive, guys holding the puck longer to let other guys move to space. Really nice to see.

  87. For once micheletti right. Those 2 pen killed any momentum we had as coyotes carried play leading to there goals.

  88. Not that difficult to see they’re playing a totally different style. Much more enjoyable to watch. The question is- do they have the right personnel to play it? It may take some time to answer that, I think.

  89. I don’t believe that Richie has even rubbed uniforms with anyone except when he fell down on a face-off. He floats so much, he should bring an inner tube out there with him.

  90. Gravy in the D zone Rich and Steps switched…..Step doesn’t have the legs or quickness yet to chase and play center in the defensive zone.

  91. Seems like they got caught for longer shifts than they wanted several times.

    The bizarro worlds TMM

  92. Rangers’ movement miles better than last year, more fun to watch, but where will the goals come from? Need a forward to score tonight.

  93. It’s late and I’m starting to doze. Did Duguay just say Zucc is a little guy with a little Johnson.?

  94. another thing, I’m not sure what would give me more heartache Hank’s ineptitude at handling the puck or Mike Smith’s rampant disregard for sensibility

  95. By the time the Rangers faceoff in Game #2, every other team in the division will have played two or three times. *Must win*

  96. iManny of Steel on

Fast has looked better than Miller although he’s bee given loads more opportunity.

  97. Lundqvist will want that one back. Not a great opening night for the Rangers best player.

  98. So many giveaways in this game by the Rangers…

Despite the fact that fired the egomaniac rat-faced coach and that they have changed to a “puck-possesion” style…

    What gives…LOL

  99. iManny of Steel on

    They seem very focused
On puck possession and are failing to forecheck the MAN with their body.

  100. well….
    what’s the worst thing
that slug vrbata getting a hat trick?
so awful in all three zones (but slightly better than pre-season)?
    losing the game?

  101. Wow. Thanks gosh we fired torts and shipped out gabby. We look like a completely new team. Well except we r still extremely easy to play against and wr still cant score but man this new system is so entertaining. Im just exhausted but how much im having. Now we just need a top line scoring wing.

  102. It takes bad games to appreciate good ones. Let’s hope we don’t end up being really appreciative.

  103. really Dorsett?
run into the goalie at this stage of the game?
    is anyone on this team
    not a bust?

  104. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

Well, they did some good things this game. Staal looks pretty darn good, too. Gotta take the positive and move on. They will get better.

Lot’s of new faces. New players. New system. Smaller goalie pads.

Plenty of time to turn this around.

  105. Down 4-1 and being dominated by Radim Vrbata and the Phoenix coyotes? This is no different from the preseason. This thing will be over before they even play a home game this year.

  106. Wow, Chris Brown plays for Phoenix? First he’s beating up Rihanna, now he’s fighting Dorsett.

  107. i imagine there are few people here now
but i would like to start a petition
demanding the Slats be taken out of the
due to his awful time with NYR
and receiving too much credit for
    Edmonton’s glory years

  108. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

looks like we’ll be tied with the Derbils after a game. Could be worse.

  109. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

That Norris trophy candidate you all love Stralman was fantastic tonight…or NOT

  110. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

Well, folks, someone has to defend our team. We have Dorsett and…………?????

  111. I blame the garden renovations for ending our season. Who the hell we beating maybe the devs that’s it.

  112. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

That’s right idiots, make fun of Nash because he actually cared enough to fight.

  113. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

Olga, I kind of like the way this team is put together. Masterful, I say.

  114. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGERS , im freaaaaakkin out..need to walk away…

  115. Possible this could turn around, especially when the shoulder guys return, but it looks as though there may not be enough finishing power for this new attractive style. Not sure what style would suit this mediocre forward talent, though.

  116. Interesting Wick…..every DMAN but Strallman is on ice for at least a goal against, but Strallman Sucks?

  117. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

More good news: Hank has less negotiating power. He could sign for less!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  118. Poo Poo… Time for some of you to go masturbate to Torts’ poster, brush your teeth and go to bed :)

  119. This team is just seriously lacking skill. It’s not that they lost, they lost so poorly. Gonna be a long season

  120. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

” Ok that was a nice pass by Teethchards”

Thanks CTB , that makes me laugh everytime.

  121. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

We are missing our captain and Hags. Seriously, this is a work in progress. No ledge here.

I look forward to hear what AV has to say. This is when I miss Torts the most.

  122. don’t know if anyone has says this or not, but Vancouver is losing 4-1 in the third like NYR did.

  123. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Using your logic, pyatt should be MVP this season and was the best forward tonight

  124. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

Duguay just called our opponent Washington. He has an ugly shirt on and a loose noodle.

Plus that hair is SO died. He would be a gray old man.

  125. yeah Matt,
we’re still missing a couple of
    the team just looks
    uninterested in doing much more
than chasing opponents who have the puck
    hitting the net (Brassard!!!)

  126. How long until “Fire Veen-yo” chants start? Maybe we’ll hear it on opening night at the World’s Most Overrated Arena…

  127. Pull-out acts like he’s still the star player
on a junior team and can act like
    Gretzky in his prime.

  128. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

So you feel quite confident in saying Stralman was the best ranger D man tonight?

  129. Olga Folkyerself on

Please! Ranger Fans… Don’t get down after the first loss of the season. I know tonight was a bit of a disappointment but it’s only the first game of the season. One technique I use to get over a bad situation is to mentally project past the bad times to the good times that are sure to come in the future. Just think ahead to after this year’s playoffs, when the Rangers win the Draft Lottery, and Sather picks Hugh Jessiman’s little brother first overall.

See? Now tonight’s loss doesn’t seem nearly so bad, does it?

  130. iWicky

    wouldn’t surprise me
if he blew out his shoulder
    and either will need surgery
and will be out for months
    or sticks around and be
    extra useless

  131. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

JPG, I am trying to stay positive. I jump all over our GM probably more than I should. I agree with what you say, but am trying to stay positive.

Let’s let them play a few games. See what happens.

  132. Stranger Nation on

My problem with 4th goal is Del Zaster has Step waiting for pass on side boards and he redirects the puck behind the net…

  133. _How long until “Fire Veen-yo” chants start?_

MSG operations staff: “They want us to fire T-shirts already?”

  134. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

Olga, nice projection. Don’t tell me he REALLY has a little brother. Now, I’m scared.

  135. Are you saying that Strallman played worse then Delzaster, Moore and Girardi?

    What game did you watch?

  136. iManny of Steel

    Looks good guys. Looks good.
    October 3rd, 2013 at 11:14 PM

    well done, Manny. well done.

  137. Matty "RichieRocketMyHero"Boy on

I am SO glad I didn’t bite for the lower level seats this year. May be a real tough sell in a few months.

  138. Boohooo…I miss Torts…boohooo…his team would never lose a game…boohooo…I miss his stiffness and jam made of balls…booohooo…

  139. 81 to go so can’t make too big a deal about a stinker. this team didn’t look particularly good tonight. fortunately they’ve only completed 1.2% of the season.

  140. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I wasn’t talking about all the D, I was talking about Stralman, who was bad tonight IMHO, but who was amazing and the next leetch according to a lot of people during the preseason.

In reality he is a 6/7 that makes 1.7 mil on a cap strapped team.

You on the other hand, by bringing up his +\- stat as even and being higher than all other D men, seem to be implying he was the best ranger D out there!!

  141. Doodie Machetto on

The PK system doesn’t work with our personnel. Way too aggressive for our forwards.

  142. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

So I disagree with you 100% on your opinion that Stralman was the best ranger D man.

  143. Olga Folkyerself on

Did you hear about the two guys arrested in Buffalo for plotting to kill Sather? The cops asked them why and they said that Sather has ruined the Rangers and will never retire or get fired, so he has to be removed as GM one way or another. Then the cops asked them why they were in Buffalo, and they said, “Because that’s where the line starts…”

  144. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Based on your proven statistical system, I assume your 3 ranger stars were pyatt, Stralman, and Pouliot?

  145. a compelling argument could be made that Pyatt doesn’t belong in a uniform let alone on the PK

  146. I bet you meet a lot of men, Elaine Benes. You know who’s a man? Charlie here, he’s a man. You know who else is a man. Me, I’m a man.

  147. Wick, I think you are inferring that, because of my citing of a specific game statistic, I am stating Strallman played “best” tonight. Not the case.

Forget the stats, I am stating directly for the record, based upon my sober oberservations of tonight’s game, Strallman was neither the best nor worst defensemen on the ice for the Rangers tonight.

What I will put forward, with all due respect, is that any and every error Strallman committed while on the ice tonight did not result in a goal by the opposition. I cannot make that claim for any of the other defenseman dressed for the Rangers this evening.

There was certainly good and bad in everyone’s game. Some had more good or bad than others.

  148. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Well put. I will take it a step further by stating that errors made by forwards while some D men were on the ice resulted in a minus rating for D men that did their job but received their minus rating due to the forwards not doing theirs.

Conversely some D men may have made some errors that were nullified by another player or forward covering for their mistake thus allowing them to not receive a minus rating.

  149. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

You are right, we might get a 3rd round pick if slats moves fast and trades him soon.

  150. “You come into this rink with a mind full of mush and you leave thinking like a hockey player.” Professor Kingsfield.

  151. Reporter to Gordie Howe (true): “Why do you wear cups and not helmets?”

Gordie: “You can always hire someone to do your thinking for you.”

  152. Still think Ash and Haley on 4th line, crashing on the forecheck, and let Richie float around with them to his heart’s content.

  153. And Wick, perhaps it’s time to let you in on a little secret. The Strallman / Norris Trophy campaigning led by me during the pre-season was meant to poke fun more at myself than anyone else.

A touch of self deprecating sarcastic humor, apparently poorly developed on my part. You see I’m fairly certain that Strallman is not a Norris caliber DMAN……at least not this year :)

  154. There are too many hockey players. Imagine if all of these guys competed to fill only an original 6?

  155. Hey Rangers in 60 just started for all the masochistic die-hards out there in Rangerland.

  156. Coach: “We lost 7-0, but I liked the way we played up the middle, we were aggressive on the forecheck, pretty much controlled center ice and won the critical faceoffs and mostly bottled them up in their own end. It’s an ongoing process.

  157. My next door neighbor watches the games with a professional hockey horn. Luckily, we don’t score that much.

  158. Really wasn’t much to like about tonight’s game but at the same time, i think there really wasn’t much to hate either. Weird.
