NHL prognostications: Season begins tonight … make your picks

203

Happy October, or as we call it, hockey season.

As you may or may not know, I have correctly predicted the outcome of every division race and every playoff series for several seasons. Or maybe not.

Anyway, here are my picks for each of the new divisions in this numbingly dumb new realignment. It’s going to be increasingly difficult, especially in the 16-team East, to make the playoffs for teams who previously benefited from being in weak divisions (looking at you, Southeast).

In case you need a refresher, there are four divisions (the Metropolitan — gag — the Atlantic, the Central and the Pacific). The top three teams in each division make the playoffs. Then there are two wild cards to be awarded based on record, and it could be that one division will have five playoff teams and the other three. Also, as if we needed a lot more games with no passion, no juice, and reduced playoff implications, every team will play a home-and-home against every team in the other conference.

Without further ado, my picks (next to each team are the latest odds to win the Stanley Cup, according to Bovada (www.Bovada.lv, twitter: @BovadaLV):

Metropolitan (cough, cough)
Pittsburgh (15/2)
Rangers (20/1)
Washington (25/1)
New Jersey (50/1)
Columbus (40/1)
Islanders (33/1)
Philadelphia (22/1)
Carolina (40/1)

Atlantic
Boston (10/1)
Ottawa (20/1)
Detroit (16/1)
Montreal (28/1)
Toronto (18/1)
Tampa Bay (33/1)
Buffalo (100/1)
Florida (150/1)

Central
Chicago (6/1)
Nashville (50/1)
St. Louis (12/1)
Winnipeg (66/1)
Minnesota (22/1)
Colorado (50/1)
Dallas (40/1)

Pacific
Los Angeles (12/1)
Vancouver (16/1)
San Jose (18/1)
Anaheim (25/1)
Phoenix (66/1)
Edmonton (20/1)
Calgary (100/1)

My preseason Stanley Cup pick:
Ottawa over Los Angeles.

I’d like to see your picks in the comments section (no prizes, sorry).

Headed over to Rangers practice this afternoon. Will tweet (@rangersreport), blog, post audio and hopefully video later on. Wednesday too. Then Wednesday afternoon or evening we’ll have our Rangers preview stories up right here.

    Steve Mason or Ray Emery.
That would not be as bad, but the Defense in front of them is horrid, save for Colburn

  12. Rangers go 0-10 to start the season. They call up Kreider and McIlrath. After the callup tey are 72-0 for the remainder of the season. They win the cup in 16 games. Wanted to keep my prediction realistic.

  14. So in every other conf, the 2nd longest odds are equal to or longer than our longest. And we have 8 teams. Yikes.

  39. Morning all,

So about the Hockey-Related Ridiculousness (HRR) from last season that resulted in the lockout: the owners complained and complained about handing out too many long-term deals.

The reality is, some players deserve them based upon season after season of stellar play. The King, for instance.

    However, some don’t. Here’s a perfect example:

Phil Kessel gets 8 years @ 8M per from TOR.
    Really?
What has he done to merit such a big-time deal? This is not an elite player.

  40. Manny,

Your picks are great – all except the Calder.

Hard to get that one. Too many variables with these kids.

  41. _What has he done to merit such a big-time deal? This is not an elite player._

I don’t know, man. I don’t like Kessel and really don’t like looking at his face, but he’s right in line with guys like Giroux, Perry and Getzlaf and they’ve all recently signed for $8MM+. At some point, we need to reset our baselines in terms of who should be worth what.

  42. Thank god we got rid of this kid: @Aportzline 41s #CBJ D Tim Erixon wearing a full cage today, NCAA style.

Drouin was sent down. But as you said, there are so many crazy factors. I assume Tortarella eventually wants some *fresh* energy on the team and brings up a youngster.

  43. Dunno, Ben. Can’t say I’m Kessel’s biggest fan either, but he’s top-10 in total goals, top-20 in points since he got traded and more players are going to be getting that kind of dollars with the term limits now.

Did we ever reach a consensus on the *elite* definition?

  44. Yeah, that’s the other thing with the cap and term limits. The elite guys will obviously max out, but so will other not-quite-elite and maybe-could-be-elite guys.

  45. LW,

For elite, the player should be a game changer, consistently great season after season, lifting his level of play when the games mean more – and helping his teammates do the same.

Jonathan Toews for example – this is an elite player. Kessel is not even in that conversation.

  46. Kessel’s production over the last few years actually puts him in the $7m+ bracket surprisingly. He’s had 4 consecutive 30+ goal seasons before the lockout. I’m surprised they had to go to $8m to sign him though.
That new deal puts him just below Eric Staal and Ryan Getzlaf and above Gaborik, Parise, Nash, Heatley and Stamkos – yeesh!

  47. “Only by NHL logic are Raleigh, N.C. and Columbus, Ohio — two cities separated by 480 miles of Appalachian wilderness — in the same “metropolitan” area. Calling this thing the Metropolitan Division makes about as much sense as the glow puck, and by January we’ll all have our own new names for it”

Nope – it seems we’ve got all ours on October the 1st!

  48. It’s the Maple Leafs so not much that they do financially will make sense to anyone with the ability for rational thought. But Kessel is an elite skater and an above average scorer and fits that system perfectly. What else could they do?

  49. _That new deal puts him just below Eric Staal and Ryan Getzlaf and above Gaborik, Parise, Nash, Heatley and Stamkos – yeesh!_

Based on that list (and ignoring Stamkos, who had some pre-UFA years in his contract), you can pretty easily argue Kessel is underpaid by current standards. He’s the youngest and most consistently productive player on that list. And not even the ugliest.

  50. Depends entirely on what different people mean by *elite* obviously, but I completely agree Kessel is a good step below Toews and a few others. But a top-10/15 scorer is probably going to get that kind of deal more often than not now.

If Toews was negotiating a deal today in the same circumstances, he’d presumably get max term and well in excess of $8m per.

  51. Agreed, LW. If you do it from the standpoint of “if everyone were a free agent and it were a signing free for all, who would get $8MM” you get a better feel for market value. Kessel and his near lock for 30 is going to get $8MM.

  52. Other max term deals signed since Lockout III:

    Perry $8.625m
    Getzlaf $8.25m
    Rask $7m
    Malkin $9.5m
    Giroux $8.275m
    Letang $7.25m
    Bergeron $6.5m
    Brown $5.875m

  54. LW,

On those max term deals, all are Cup winners, except Giroux and Rask.

Rask is a Risk, by the way – really based on last season’s stats alone. A hunch by Peter Chiarelli, who is rarely wrong. But in no way, shape or form should he be paid more than his teammate, Patrice Bergeron.

Now all things considered, Bergeron is an elite player. Does everything at such a high level – and played the entire SCF last season pretty much held together with Scotch Tape. A leader and a winner, for sure. I’d pick him as Captain of Team Canada for the Olympics, instead of Sausage Lips.

  55. I don’t see how Kessel is any different than a player like Stamkos. And he’s not much different than signing a player like Getzlaf to a deal that he will never live up to. Kessel is the Leafs franchise player. That’s a choice they have to make since they don’t have a goaltender.

Our main problem is probably that players get paid MAX or players get paid minimum. The cap structure will destroy the middle class of hockey players. Also, it will make it nearly impossible for anyone to have a very balanced team.

  56. Manny,

    Agree 100%.

I don’t know how Rey Shero is doing it in Pittsburgh.

He has Sausage Lips, Malkinstein, Letang, Kunitz, Dupuis and Fleury locked up for long-term deals. That’s a lot of dough for nearly one-third of the roster.

  57. Although Shero will more than likely tried to unload Fleury before too long.

Perhaps a swap of the Flower for Ryan Miller, who wants out of Buff.

  58. I think Boston was close to that middle of the road payment and balance at least until the Rask deal. What about Detroit?

  59. I totally forgot that they have Bernier. I was still thinking of the Rimer/Scribbles tandem. Right. Maple leafs could be good if Bernier can indeed act like a starter. They will score a lot.

  60. Kings are going to be tough this year.

ESPN Challenge. Set your team each week. Can’t spend over 100M.

You basically play the player that plays the most games.

But each week the players go up I value.

    Get in the Game!!!

  63. _Our main problem is probably that players get paid MAX or players get paid minimum. The cap structure will destroy the middle class of hockey players. Also, it will make it nearly impossible for anyone to have a very balanced team._

Yup, the middle class will be young players who took early long term deals and are underpaid or UFAs who reached the open market and found someone to overpay them. A true $4MM players making $4MM will be rare.

  64. Basically, outside UFA is something to avoid almost entirely unless a franchise level player hits the market. The guys who make it will not be worth what you’ll give them. In fact, some will be outright b(r)ad.

  65. _It’s going to be tough to get Hank done, if Richards gets injured_

If this happens, our best bet is Chapter 11.

  66. I didn’t mean to do it. I make that same mistake attempting a bad=brad joke every few months.

  67. If Richards suffers a career ending injury, can the Rangers place him on the long term injury list and recover 100% of his cap hit to spend on others players moving forward?

  68. “Basically, outside UFA is something to avoid almost entirely unless a franchise level player hits the market. The guys who make it will not be worth what you’ll give them. In fact, some will be outright b®ad.”

Unless your franchise hasn’t had a homegrown player score 30+ more than once in about 20 years.

  69. You know he won’t, Papa. He’ll tear his ACL in game 82, we’ll miss the playoffs and he won’t pass his buyout physical. We’ll all cry and cry and cry and barf.

  70. And if so, what’s that Galooly guy from the Tanya Harding deal doing these days?

But I think we get murdered with penalties, which is the biggest fear.

  71. I’d argue Gaborik was a franchise-level player when he was available, CTB. Unless you meant someone else.

  72. He was, but in terms of how teams in general should avoid overpriced UFAs given that UFA age more closely aligns to post-peak years than prime years especially in goal scorers. The reason you’d go after the pricey UFAs is if you can’t develop your own productive scorers as the Rangers haven’t since Amonte.

  73. Papa- to answer your previous question. Yes, theoretically they can. If he sustains a career ending injury, the Rangers can place him on LTIR and use his full cap hit for replacement players, providing they max out on the cap each year.

  74. wow!!!! Kessel getting 8 mil per, the league keeps this up and Nash’s contract will look like a bargain.

  75. When was the last time had a homegrown guy lead the team in scoring? I’m thinking Zubov in 94?

  76. Does anyone remember when the Flyers beat the Rangers in the season’s final game in a shootout to advance to the playoffs instead of the Rangers?

  77. Actually Dubi might have led them in points a few years ago but he was hardly among the league leaders.

The point is the Rangers have rarely developed premium scoring talent over the past 2 decades and it’s why they’ve had to chase after high priced UFAs during that time.

  78. CT- I remember someone else who was drafted and developed by Rangers and scored 44 goals and 95 points in one season elsewhere. Finished his NHL career with over 1000 points.

  80. I remember him too, and it was too bad he was never able to produce like that wearing a blueshirt

It’s a good thing the Rangers didn’t hire Eakins, or else the top 3 lines would all have A’s on their chests

  83. There is no such a thing as an assistant captain in hockey. It’s interesting that it was twitted from an official Edmonton Oilers tweeter accountant. They should know better.

  84. I agree with you, ilb. But I have heard actually NHL players use the term “Assistant.” So I guess the whole “Alternate” thing is a thing of the past.

I’m taking the rest of the day off to CLEAN my SLATE. By Thursday, it should be nice and clean to start the season.

I’m beginning to think the Rangers win the cup, with the clean slate, that is.

Let’s GO Rangers!! Cup is ours this year!

  87. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

We go as Richie Rocket goes. His slate has been wiped clean. I think he’s good for 50g and 75a, 125 points. 82 game season, not a half year.

He is going to be amazing. As a wing, and clean slate and all. Our savior.

  88. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

Sioux, have you seen The Kreider in person? He really is impressive, good skating, speed, hands.

His head is just turned about 90 degrees the wrong way. Hope he can get his act together. He has the physical attributes. His drive is a question.

  89. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

And, aside from MacIlBust, he is BY FAR our biggest prospect. His size makes him stand out like Marilyn on the Munsters.

  90. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

RJ, welcome!! Enjoy the season. If you love the game and especially our team, you can’t find better!!

  91. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

Glad the Filth signed Gill. Man is he big. Don’t let him catch you.

But that’s ok. He was slow as molasses 3 years ago. Speak of immobile.

  92. RJ, welcome, it is a great site. Its even better when we’re winning and last I checked, we’re in first place!

    LGR!!!

  93. HA!!!HA!!! Hal Gill, it’s amazing how the flyers keep reaching for defensemen and goaltending. They still don’t get it and hopefully they never get it. Flyers will end up 2nd to last in the metropolitan division.

Ria – great to hear from you. Post more often, unless you are saving yourself for the night crew

Flyers have scoring need D, Rangers have D need scoring…hmm…

never happen in my lifetime, but the options are intruiging

  97. Hi RJ. You have about 10 more minutes to declare whether you LOVE Brian Boyle or HATE Brian Boyle. Only two options.

  98. _Flyers have scoring need D, Rangers have D need scoring…hmm…

    Simmonds for Stralman.

  99. Matty "RichieRocketOurSavior"boy on

I know it might hurt, but I might consider throwing in RichieRocket along with Stralman for Simmonds. DOes that sweeten it up??

  100. Ria( the silent bonehead) on

The “day crew ” not too shabby either its just that the “night crew” makes me LMFAO. Humor is the best medicine.

  101. Folks here strangely high on the Rangers. Vegas strangely high on the Rangers. Must be Lundqvist or perhaps Vigneault, because the the line-up is decidedly mediocre — hard to see where goals might come from without a bunch of career years. Or is it the relative crappiness of other teams? I hope people are right about them, though!

  102. So you had to try and one up me, Doodie? In Hindsight, that probably wasn’t very nice of you.

BRich still on first PP unit, Clean Slate? Not so much.

AV, how about checking out a bit of tape from last season, please.

  104. Doodie Machetto on

Manny, no, I was taking the coward’s way out of not having to make an actual prediction.

  105. AV: “Brad, you know I haven’t looked at any tape …”

    [Brad high-fives AV]

AV: “… so I was thinking about trying you at the point on the power play. Have you ever played there before and failed miserably?”

BR: “You’ve watched no tape, right?”

    AV: “Nope.”

    BR: “None at all?”

    AV: “Not a second.”

BR: “I’m willing to give the point a try.”

AV: “Alright, lets go. Clean slate.”

  106. I read BR on the point on the PP in practice, OH BOY!!! Here we go!!!!! I wonder how many break away goals the other team is going to have against the rangers this year.

  107. bull dog line on

AV needs to put Richards in a position to succeed. this way, when he fails, the benching will have merit.
