Happy September! … New divisional odds for 2013-14

With the new month eventually comes actual hockey, training camps, preseason games, etc. (in years when there is no lockout, anyway).

Here are some new odds on winning each of the new divisions in 2013-14 … and also a reminder of who’s in what division and what are the names of the new divisions in the nonsensical realignment plan, in which somehow somebody thinks it’s better to have fewer games with playoff implications.

  1. Happy September indeed!

I think the Rangers will be pretty darn good this year. They had a pretty good record after the trade, without injuries to Clowe and Staal they would’ve given Boston more of a fight.

I am pretty psyched this time of year.

  2. Good morning, boneheads!

Happy September, indeed! Any time your team has 3 back-to-back battles in a month, you have to consider it to be a busy hockey schedule :-)

  3. Metropolitan Division (our division) is the toughest… we’re screwed!

Chicago got the easiest division and poor Panthers will never see the postseason.

  4. >>Metropolitan Division (our division) is the toughest… we’re screwed!

Are you saying it’s the Group of Death?

  5. its time for the Rangers to sign Stepan to an 8 year 40 million dollars contract. a bit much, right. let me explain.
to me it looks like the Rangers want Stepan to sign a 2 year bridge contract. based on the cap space they have left, figure 2 years, 2.5 per.
lets say Stepan puts together back to back 70 point seasons. not unreasonable, right. now he is an RFA again. time to lock him up long term. 6 years, 6 mill per. cap hit of 6 mill. if you sign him now to the 8 year 40 mill deal, you are looking at a cap hit of 5 mill. if you wait, it will probably cost another mill against the cap. I know it hurts the cap short term, but long term it helps.

  6. Works for me Bulldog. I think those point totals are reasonable and the long term wouldn’t scare me. Home grown, getting better and still a child. Get er done!

  7. Don’t we ever learn on 8 yr contracts? 2 for Step, n the only one longer than 4 yrs is Hank at 6. Eliminate Richards and things fall into place.

  8. carp,
I think it a win, win for both. Stepan gets more dollars early, and the Rangers would save late.

  9. A really big house on the ocean, a few original Warhols for the walls, a top of the line vintage Ferrari, and your 40 million is history and you’re eating at McDonald’s. Stepan needs ARod money.

  10. 8 yr deals to players coming off their ELCs have a much better bet of working out than 8 yr deals to players on the downswing of their careers.

Buying out what should be a player’s most productive years isn’t the worst thing the Rangers have done with their cap dollars.

  11. We just get over the hump and there’s another hump looming on the horizon. And it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. So we have that going for us.

  12. Rangers should do what the colleges do – let the rich fans induce signings and retentions by paying off the players with cash under the table.

  13. Carp, you should have majored in advertising in college. No more changing into golf shoes in the parking lot! :)

  14. Jerry Della Feminia, working on the Panasonic account: “From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor.”

  15. One time friend of mine came up with the Max Headroom commercials which I never thought funny, but made him a large fortune.

  16. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Can Serena skate? She’d fight right in on ‘d’. Bigger than MDZ! More accurate and faster shot, too!!

  17. my end of the season pessimism has somehow worn away and i look at the division now, i feel like we might be the second best team in the group…

i’m sure all of that optimism will be cured by the second game of the season.

cccp! bonehead fantasy again this year?

  18. Cross Check Charlie on

I’m surprised that there is such a difference in the odds between the New York Blue Jackets and the Columbus Rangers.

  19. Rob in Beantown on

It’s also a little surprising the Rangers and the Islanders have the exact same 7/1 odds.

  20. Saint stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes,
Country garden in the wind and the rain,
Wherever he goes the people all complain.

Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline.
Did it matter, does it now? stephen would answer if he only knew how.

Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell,
Hell halfway twixt now and then,
Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.

Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing what for? across the morning sky.

Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day good-bye.

    Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow,
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned.

Several seasons with their treasons,Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own.

Did he doubt or did he try? answers aplenty in the bye and bye,
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills,
One man gathers what another man spills.

Saint stephen will remain, all hes lost he shall regain,
Seashore washed by the suds and foam,
Been here so long, hes got to calling it home.

Fortune comes a crawlin, calliope woman, spinnin that curious sense of your own.
Can you answer? yes I can. but what would be the answer to the answer man?

  21. 9 days to training camp. followed by preseason games.

then the 2-6-1 roadtrip that will have us buried by the home opener

  22. Don’t worry eric, we open at home against the Habs. We never have any troub… I mean we usually beat th….. never mind.

  23. My prediction(20/1): we will start very slowly – too many road games,Cally/Hag absents, lack of immediate understanding between new couching staff and players about system implementation.Than,Rangers’locomotive will start gaining speed, leaving jackwagons, naysayers and panicers out in gutters, with usual peak after February deadline, toward March/April and…voilà – we are in a playoff ready to crush any team with any hope.
Our motto: “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate” – Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.(PO it is)

  24. That ‘Under John Tortorella (Parody of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”)’ song is pretty cool… i will be rooting for Torts to do well in Vancouver because i always liked that team. So…GO TORTS! :D

  25. I second that. He better be in Vancouver, farther from Rangers team and good luck to him and his new whipping boys.

  26. CCCP,
cheer up buddy, there is something to celebrate for you – isn’t today Odessa’s Birthday? 219 years old – almost as old as Sam Rosen…but younger by soul and attitude…and with much better sense of humor. Good reason for few “Gorilka’s z percem”, hah?

  27. Wow, it makes me salivated…no, not that wonderful food, – a picture in the upper left corner.

  28. ..OK, fuggetaboutit. Hennessy and shrimps are more than enough for envious salivating…Lechaim, boyare!

  29. Rob in Beantown on

    Hagelin – Stepan – Nash
    Callahan – Richards – Kreider
    Zuccarello – Brassard – Pouliot
    Boyle – Moore – Dorsett

  30. oh the days dwindle down to a precious few….September song…and my feelings now that training camp is in sight!! Ilb, regarding Pyatt? Says it all. The question mark should be part of his name at this point . Defense lines anyone?

  31. Could Pyatt? Be in the lineup opening night due to hags and Cally recovering from shoulder surgery? Camp should be interesting and more critical this year with at least two spots to fight for, even if they are part time.

  32. Big Rick (Carpiniello) had the same jersey number as Big Rick (Nash). They didn’t retire that number? A bobble head day at least?

  33. >>Does anybody else absolutely love this commercial?

It’s a fantastic advert. It would be even better without the voiceover at the end.

  34. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

While I can’t say that group would shock me, we are in deep trouble and will be pushed all over the ice if that is the finished product.

  35. Rob in Beantown on

If those are the lines, then I think the 3rd and 4th lines look very good. The 1st and 2nd are a problem, and with Callahan and Hagelin (maybe?) out to start the season there will be 3rd and 4th liners playing up again and marginal NHLers on the 3rd and 4th lines again.

  36. Rob – not that I’m a homer. But I honestly think Kristo will get a solid chance at the first 10 games. The kid has a great skill set, AND he finds a way to score. Which this team needs. More GOALS!!!

  37. I’m thinking Stepan might have Kristo on his side to start the season.

It would be Crazy if he breaks the ice on Nash’s line.

You could tickle me pink if he has a “Stepan” type first game. HA!

  38. Cross Check Charlie on

Your 2013 #NYR Traverse City Roster:

Forwards: J.T. Barnett, Anthony Duclair, Jesper Fast, Josh Graves, Kyle Jean, Michael Kantor, Danny Kristo, Paxton Leroux, Oscar Lindberg, Josh Nicholls, Thomas Spelling, Michael St. Croix, Klarc Wilson and Andrew Yogan.

Defensemen: Conor Allen, Charlie Dodero, Troy Donnay, Ben Fanelli, Ryan Graves, Tommy Hughes, Samuel Noreau and Jimmy Oligny….

Goaltenders: Jeff Malcolm and Mackenzie Skapski

  39. Rob in Beantown on

I made an admittedly unfunny wisecrack about Corey Crawford signing a contract extension, and the fact that the Rangers’ goaltender does not have any jewelry on his fingers, and my comment is now awaiting moderation.

  40. Extra funny because Crawford is really not a very good goaltender. He wins the cup in a Fluke system with Emery playing like a God behind him, they win the Jennings and he gets a massive extension.

  41. Let’s hope “Malcolm in the Middle” can pull off a Siouxper Series like he did in the NCAA tournament.

Siouxper excited to see Kristo in a Blueshirt.

Does anyone know if we are going to be able to watch it?

  42. Gravy, Just Gravy on

MSG is not showing Traverse City, but it will apparently be streaming online.

Any reason McIlrath is not on the prospect roster?

  43. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Looks like 2013 3rd rounder, Pavel Buchnevich, is jumping up the prospect list…only rated behind The Kreider and The Kristo.

  44. Sioux,
There was some talk of it being streamed online but that may not happen.

“DRW Events in TC Hi Robert, we have passed along some misinformation. The New York Rangers hockey club was interested in live streaming, however it is just a consideration at this point. If that gets confirmed, we will let you know.
    August 31 at 3:31pm”

  45. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Granted Buchnevich is only 18, so a lot can change. Will we hear Buuuuuuuuuuch at the Garden again in the near future?

  46. It’s a tie. In order to prevent the NYR from becoming the first team in professional sports to lose every game, the NHL steps in and declares the last game a tie.

  47. I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience .

  48. No politics Carp! Especially after August.
Ps-Why didn’t you married ‘heads warn me about all the damn gifts I was gonna have to make room for in order to appease the future Mrs G??

  49. I really wish just one of you Young Bloods would believe me when I tell you to not get married.

My goal in life is to change the mind of just one young man who is teetering on the edge…then I can pas son knowing I made a difference in this world

  50. ‘The preacher asked her
    And she said I do
    The preacher asked me
And she said yes, he does too
    And the preacher said
I pronounce you 99 to life.
Son, she’s no lady she’s your wife

  51. Stranger Nation on

    Kristo is starting center?

    Mcilrath in top 4?

    Fast/Fasth not eating enough?

    Richards training in South Hampton?

Torts refusing to pick up his dog’s poo in Vancouver?

JD & Straight Shots nominated for Grammy?

    another season on the brink…

  52. @TSNBobMcKenzie: Tough sledding for NYR/RFA Derek Stepan. Player seeks McDonagh $ (6 x $4.7M) but no arb rights, NYR holding firm on Subban level bridge deal.

Is he going to be a hold out? Too early to say? Too bad he’s not taking part in the pre camp workouts.

  53. My ex and I had a very amicable divorce. I know this because when I wrote the Facebook status “I’m getting a divorce,” she was the first one to click Like.

  54. My wife and I split due to religious differences. She worshiped money and I started to run out of it. :)

  55. A man tells his doctor that he’s incapable of doing all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination is over, he says, “Okay, Doctor. In plain English—what’s wrong with me?”

“Well, in plain English,” says the doctor, “you’re just lazy.”

The man nods. “Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife.”

  56. Doctor says to patient, “This is going to cost you $50,000 and I can only give you six months to live.”

Patient: “I can’t possibly come up with 50 grand in six months.”

Doctor: “I’ll give you a year to live.”

  57. Angry wife meets husband at the door, alcohol on his breath, lipstick on his cheek. “I assume that there is a very good reason for you to come waltzing in here at six o’clock in the morning?”

    “There is. Breakfast.”

  58. Knock on a door at three o’clock in the morning:

    – Who’s there?
    – Jean Claude Van Dam
    – I’m gonna come out right now, and beat the sht outta all four of you!

  59. Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.

  60. Once I saw a voluptuous woman wearing a sweat shirt with “Guess” on it…so I said: “Implants?”

  61. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

  62. …”Dad, where I came from?”
    – “Look son, problem is not where you came from, but rather why in the hell I decided to go there”.

  63. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Take my wife, please. I try to take my wife everywhere, but she keeps coming back. She said, take me someplace I’ve never been. How about the kitchen?

  64. :) Dangerfield: “My wife cut me down to once a month, but I shouldn’t complain. I know six guys she cut off altogether.”

  65. In the beginning, God created earth and rested.

Then God created man and rested.

    Then God created woman.

Since then, neither God nor man has rested.

  66. I miss Dubinsky.

I’d like to see how much crap, if any, Stephan will get from the garden faithful if he’s holding out…

  67. Rob in Beantown on

Why shouldn’t Stepan hold out? Seems like the smart thing to do

Uh oh, what day is it?

  68. Rob- Stepan has no leverage. That’s the only time when a team has more leverage than a player, a situation when a player comes off his ELC without arbitration rights. The best case scenario would be to sign him long-term, similar to McD contract. That way he gets his long term security, and the team buys a few years of his UFA. Truth is, the Rangers don’t have enough cap space to sign him to long-term deal. Bridge contract is what he is going to get. It’ll cost Rangers a $1M or so per year in his future contract, but that’s when the cap goes up, and Richards’ contract is off the books.

  69. Rob in Beantown on

I guess you’re right. I didn’t realize we had so little cap space– $2.18M according to capgeek. A McDonagh type deal seems like it would be preferable if we had the cap space.

  70. He’ll get his pay, Rob. If he plays well. In 2 years he’ll be a RFA with arbitration rights and will get a 6-7 year deal with AAV of over $5M. Holding out now and missing any parts of training camp, if not a chunk of regular season, with the new coach on board isn’t something his agents should be advising him to do, imo.

  71. In reality, all this, so called, Stepan “situation” we are discussing because there is nothing else to talk about. It is just normal, routine, business negotiations, where both parties involved, are pretty sure of the positive outcome and working more on a details and technicalities.
    Nothing to worry about.
Unlike our case, Kadri situation is much more “interesting”

  72. Gravy, Just Gravy on

I think it is likely that they are exploring a move/moves to free up some cap space and give him a fair offer. I don’t think this is just Sather playing hardball (which in current state, he would have no choice of playing).

  73. Cheaper options may become problematic if they can’t crack the roster considering that Callahan/Hagelin duo isn’t starting until late October. They need reliable players to fill in.

  74. Gravy, Just Gravy on

By the way, the $2.2M in cap space includes Asham and Powe at $1M each, so they actually have closer to $4M (assuming each is charged at about $150k against the cap).

  75. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Although, to further confuse matters, excluding them brings them to 12 signed forwards (excluding Stepan). So, they will need 1 more forward with Cally/Hagelin likely out. Assuming they use a rookie, I guess they’d have about $3M total, as is.

  76. Gravy, Just Gravy on

To continue, it should make camp interesting. If Kristo or Miller make a case for a spot, they have the most expensive contracts at $1.3M and $1.24, respectively. So, they would be hard-pressed to sign Stepan AND have one of those guys make the team. Whereas Fasth, Lindberg, Borque, etc. are $900k or less.

  77. With the cap, plus Hagelin and Cally injuries i can’t see us being able to move any significant salary to offer him more than 2yrs at around $2.5m (ie a DZ deal). We will save some on Powe/Asham demotions but will need to add at least 2 of Kristo/Miller/Fast/Lindberg to start the season which offsets some of that saving.

  78. Gravy, Just Gravy on

UK, they have 14 forwards signed, including Asham and Powe. So, if you take them out, but sign Stepan, they will have 13. Take out Cally and Hagelin, they have 11. So, they only need one more.

    Cliff notes: 14-2+1-2+1=12

  79. I dont think Cally or Hags can start the year on IR to save cap room can they? Isnt there a 10 game rule or something?

If it comes down to it Pyatt is the obvious candidate to be traded, with Boyle a close 2nd. Of course, this could have all been avoided…….

  80. Gravy, Just Gravy on

That was just the number of healthy forwards they would need to dress. Cally and Hagelin would still be counted against the cap. I think you’re right about the 10 games.

  81. Hjalmarsson’s deal raises the bar for Dan Girardi i think. Blockness is going to be in the $4.5-5m range for a long-term deal.

  82. There’s a big difference between holding out and not being signed. Stepan will not be holding out if they can’t find the cap space to sign him. …

and they could easily have had that space by buying out a certain other center whom they will have to buy out next summer, and whom most of the hockey staff wanted to buy out last July.

  83. p.s. thats just my guess, but what do i know? I thought BRich would be bought out, Step would be on a 6 yr $30m deal and Hank would be on an 8 yr $60m deal by now!!

  84. McDonuts, Steps buddy and roommate, to Steps: “Wanna grab a Subway foot long and a large Pepsi? I got a two for one coupon and I’m buying.”

  85. Putting everything else aside, I have to admit that Torts was entertaining in a gruesome sort of way. Who wants to hear the coach in a presser with the “one game at a time” BS over and over again?

  86. The sad thing … and I told him this to his face several times … is that when he felt like answering questions, he was usually pretty good at it. He didn’t spit out too many cliches (other than his own, such as “process”) and he explained how he felt about certain players and certain parts of the game.

  87. Don’t you think 2.5M – 2.75M for 2 years is what is being offered. A nice raise from 800K don’t you think.

No way Stepan gets the same deal McD gets, when he has no leverage in the deal.

His only option is to pull a Dubi for the first 2 weeks, and watch Lindberg take the draws for him?

  88. Coos its going to be boring with out the catch phrases like “it’s a process, Jam, he’s a pro’s pro, he gets it”

Still a Torts fan. He will do well with his new team.

Who has a better record AV or Torts?

Personally, I think Torts has more top end talent on the ice right now.

  89. Anthony, with your work ethic, we might be able to use you as a 4th line wing this year! Kudos.

  90. Was it my imagination or did Torts usually seem to give Carp considerably more respect than he did to some of the others?

  91. Just my ‘magination,,,, running away with me.

Yeah, it was just my imagination, running,,,,,, running away with me.

  92. ‘Come with me

Whoa, great article about Staal. The way he describes it makes it sound way worse than I thought it was. He’s lucky to be okay.

  98. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Yes, that was a good article.

Made me wonder…now that Tort(s) is gone, will we get more injury information?

  99. Well Thanks for not making me out to be a dead man walkin’ fellas : / (s)

Anyhow- I agree with Bulldog (god help me) It would make much more sense to just structure a deal wisely and get Step locked up for the long run. would hate to see this get drawn out through camp and pre season

  100. How could Torts NOT give Carp respect? He’s been covering this team since zambonis were just horse drawn buggies with shovels tied to the back : D

  101. lol. His original golf cart was also horse-drawn with hickory clubs, oil lamps, and rakes on the back.

  102. To my Russian speaking fellows:
