Buffalo Baby Buffalo Bonehead … and volunteers wanted

033-1Forgot to post this photo earlier. It was sent to us from our friend Sioux-per-man.

It’s what he calls a “Buffalo Baby Buffalo Bonehead.”

Meanwhile, as we count the days until camp officially opens on Sept. 11, I need a couple of volunteers to do the preseason game reviews of the Sept. 16  exhibition game at New Jersey , and the Sept. 17 preseason game at Philadelphia. I’ll be around, but my “other job” responsibilities might prevent me from watching the games those nights.

Also we could use a couple more guest blogs. Got one from our friend George Grimm in the coming days. But if anybody wants to volunteer to do one in the next few weeks, or to review one of those two preseason games, drop me an email at rcarpini@lohud.com.

ps, for newcomers or those with poor memories, the term Buffalo Baby Buffalo comes from a story from one of our readers. A girl in Buffalo was asked “what’s a Sabre?” and her answer was “It’s a baby buffalo.” Hence, in our twisted jargon here, the Sabres became the Buffalo Baby Buffaloes. And Buffalo chicken wings became Buffalo Baby Buffalo chicken wings. Etc.

Manny, my wife and I were looking at getting some bikes because the kids are getting to riding age. But, I have no idea what type of bike to purchase, what’s cool, etc.

  7. I didn’t know either, Gravy. It’s kind of hard to understand bikes. I bought one on Craigslist and had my hipster bike friends check it out for me and make sure I wasn’t getting ripped off (by the unemployed hipster that sold it to me).

This website is pretty good. The bikes are SUPER affordable. http://www.bikesdirect.com

  8. Gravy, Just Gravy on

I think I like the look of mountain bikes the best, but I don’t see myself doing a ton of off-road biking. Maybe a hybrid?

I wonder how they are on gas.

  9. I think it’s silly that Team Canada and I believe team USA Olympic camps are not on ice. They didn’t get the insurance. Now they are running ball hockey drills and doing line rushes. I would think the chance for injury is as high or higher going this route? #dontgethurtcally

  12. Rob in Beantown on

Henrique gets $4M per year for 6 years. Did the price for Stepan just go up considerably?

  13. Looking at Adam Rotter’s tweet. If Staal is indeed 100%, that makes our team incredibly stronger. I’m keeping my fingers crossed

  14. Gravy: I grew up on a Trek Hybrid, 21-Speed. That bike served me well in my country upbringing. Pretty rad.

  15. I probably still won’t relax until Zucc scores that fifth goal.

BTW some of the boys are skating together today, a pre camp skate.

    BRich, well he’s golfing.

  16. based on these reports you would think marc staal would win the norris trophy this year. god i hope he is healthy.

  17. Here is a revised Sochi 2014 American Men’s USA Hockey team.

  19. As with RC Priests, Rangers should not be allowed to marry. They should devote their time to on-ice skill development for our enjoyment or ticket prices should be reduced in compensation.

  20. Not so fast, Elaine! Only the bike’s true owner would rather

  24. See – tee shirt, shorts can’t be more than 1″ above the knee, shirt not tucked. (Maybe he has a collar on that tee – can’t really tell.) I have no problem with any of it – just sayin’.

  25. Nor me, Carp. As a kid, used to tee off late afternoons at Winged Foot with my mom and no one ever said a word. Couple three times groundskeepers even pulled the water hoses they were using off the greens as we approached. :) Wouldn’t try that today, for sure.

  26. let’s talk about something controversial… anti-gay laws in Russia. I do not agree with that law and i do believe in human rights no matter the color or sexual orientation, etc., but apparently, now we have to hate on Kovalchuk and Datsyuk because they have a different opinion on the subject and because they stand by their country? BS! At least they were honest and didn’t take “oh we just play hockey” route as Lundqvist did… so, imho, you have to respect the honesty…

  27. Actually, no one’s business what Kovi or any other athlete thinks about ANYTHING other than his sport, and it’s rude to ask.

  28. agree… no one’s business…but… reporters need a juicy scoop so now you have players’ opinions… and everyone has to deal with them. I just think its wrong to point fingers at people just because they dont think the way you want them to…people in the former USSR have always been persecuted for anything and everything…why is this such a news all of a sudden?

  29. Agreed I think it’s crazy guys like Datsyuk and Hank are being slammed for basically saying nothing.

  30. I think Eric was asking earlier if anyone knows when “1994: Knicks March to the Finals” is scheduled to be shown on the MSG network again?

  33. Good morning, boneheads!

So, the article by LB ( Manny, 3:38 pm ) suggests that Richards thinks having AV and his offensive style of hockey, instead of Torts’ defense first style, would be good for him next year. I believe he is right. But he’d better come out swinging next year because, if not, he will displace Boyle on WBM list real fast. For the record, I think Richards will be a much better player next year regardless. He is a proud person and will be determined to prove that last year was an aberration. I still think he *HAS* to be bought out next summer.

  34. He will not be if he has himself an all-star season.

Rangers fans better hope he stinks up the joint again this season and leaves no doubt in management’s minds.

  35. Lundqvist, Callahan, Girardi, Brassard, MDZ, Kreider, ( just to name a few, and not counting their need to fill up some other roster spots) will all be up for a raise in 2014. Unless the salary cap goes up by 20% or so, I don’t see them having enough space to sign them all without removing Richards’ $6.67M cap hit.

  36. Boyle, Pouliot, Pyatt, Powe, Moore, Asham, Stralman, Biron come off the cap.

I could see Stralman being re-signed, Del Zotto, Hagelin, Brassard being moved in the right trade.

Too early to view the salary cap as an obstacle.

Rosters can look very different in the first game of one season compared to the first game of the next season.

  37. it would be cap suicide not to buy out Richards next year regardless if Richards plays well or not.

  38. Players coming off the the cap will have to be replaced. Players moved will bring players and salaries back. Also, we are talking about their core players. Do the math.

  39. Not really. With the salary cap increasing each offseason, the cap should be at $80,000,000 in a few years.

Put it this way, Richards is being given the opportunity to thrive under a new coach. If he does, he is not going anywhere.

While the possibility exists that Richards will thrive, I believe he is cooked.

  40. Players coming off the cap can be replaced with cheaper, internal options.

Players moved in a trade can bring back only draft picks or cheaper alternatives.

  41. Dan Girardi may not be retained next offseason.

Another team might offer Girardi more than the Rangers, and it might not be cost efficient to sign Girardi to a long-term sizable contract to be a 2nd pair defenseman.

  42. $80M? You think that’s a possibility? That’s a heck of a lot of money and means that the NHL starts bringing in some serious increases in revenue. That’s like a 1/5 increase. And since the NHL is AROUND $3.3B right now…that would mean bringing in a clean $4B in revenue.

  43. Girardi might also take a puck to a bone and end his own career by playing like a crazy person. He’s the best.

  44. I do, Manny. Count on another lockout after the expiration of this CBA. Greedy owners trying to rectify their own careless spending. Irony, eh?

  45. Rob in Beantown on

He’s the best until he snow angels at an inopportune time, at which point he is *literally* the worst

  46. $80M is very realistic, but only in a few years. Generally, 7% per year is very possible going forward. Do the math. It’s only about $4.5M increase next year. 2014-2015 season is when the Rangers have most of their cap issues. They will need much more than that to resign their core players (including a “2nd pair Girardi)

  47. LOL Rob, he doesn’t look quite so menacing in that pic.

Unless Richards wins the Art Ross trophy, he must go.

  48. agree with carp

richards bought out regardless what he does. cap will rise prob to 70 mil for 2014-2015 season based on revenue and all these outdoor games.

did we trade del zaster yet. raise for him i will screammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  49. 4 Spots left in my Yahoo! Fantasy Football League. Standard 12 team, Head to Head league. Buy In amount is currently up for discussion.

  50. We are still working out draft time details. There is a message board post attempting to find a reasonable time for everyone.

  51. If Richie has a rebound year, couldn’t he be traded for some picks, simultaneously alleviating his salary burden, jettisoning his contract risks, and
    stocking our futures? (Just axing.)

  52. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Cooz, I think the only way that is remotely possible is a small market team using the contract to stay above the cap floor. But, they will get little to know player/pick value in return.

  53. Rob in Beantown on

We can’t just have that buy out burning a hole in Sather’s pocket. Who gets bought out then?

  54. Gravy, Just Gravy on

I think a majority of Rangers fans are also Yankees/Giants fans, yet somehow, I managed to pick the three least winningest teams in NY.

  55. Granted, Gravy re: your analysis. If the league knows the NYR are up against a cap wall with integral players who must be signed with significant raises, they’ll anticipate that Richie will be jettisoned, thus reducing his (trade) value.

  56. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

LOL @ the NHL and EJ Hradek, that link rob put up at 9:42 discussing the rangers has the wrong Falk (Faulk) in it!!

  57. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Rob, to play along, the only other player that can be considered is Nash. Everyone else only has one year remaining on their contracts, aside from McD and Hags (who they just signed and could not be bought out through amnesty, I believe).

  58. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I’ll be shocked if we don’t have phanuef later this season or as a free agent.

  59. Hey Carp,

Not to ask a stupid question, but where the hell is the Traverse City roster for the Rangers? Seems like all the other teams have released them and the only one I can find for the Rangers dates back to 2011 and has Carl Hagelin on it.

Does MSG just seriously not care? Any word when they might release them? The Tournament is in less than a week.

  60. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Actually, it’s pretty crazy that only Richards, Nash, and McD are signed beyond 2014-15. I suspect Stepan will be too when all is said and done.

  61. I think Glennie made a whale of a deal with McDonuts, who obviously sought security over dollars. I mean, after all is said and done, how many potatoes can you eat? (No offense to potato eaters, of which I am one.)

  62. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

As I look at the current roster, we are soft as hell and smallish in the top 6 forwards. I feel bad for dorsett, he is going to end up being a goon even though he isn’t one because there is no one else and I mean NO ONE who has the mentality to drop them consistently.

  63. Beard Contest is in!!

    @NastySays 41s

Big that you to all my voters and of course to the man that made it all happen, @MrManager5 ! Thanks brother.

  64. A guy who plays with an aggressive edge like Boyle doesn’t really have to drop them to be effective. (see Ulfie) We just want him to because he is so damned big. Agree about Dorsett, though. I remember when Steve Vickers was expected by management to score 35+ and also be the guy to fight all the bad guys and he got tired of it.

  65. Unless we replace Clowe, Dorsett might should sign an early-bird special locked-in price with a hand surgeon.

  66. Maybe Dorsett’s agent can get him a Backstrom commercial with helmet slivers in his knuckles.

  67. @JimCerny: Several NHL players including Matt Moulson and Travis Zajac skating w/#NYR contingent at MSG Training Center today

    Skating with enemy??

  68. …and Dorsett can’t police the whole team, Asham may see some ice time yet. He still has one of the best wrist shots on this team, sadly.

  69. Since he cleared waivers, I guess I’m the only one who thinks so. If he were 30, he might have been grabbed.

  70. Gravy, Just Gravy on

When I think of toughness and booming slap shots, Backstrom is definitely the first name that comes to mind.

  71. In case anyone cares or is looking to get a little agita going for the mid afternoon. The Rangers are the team of the the day at nhl.com 30 in 30 series.

  72. Speaking about toughness… The most intriguing thing next season with the roster virtually unchanged, will be of course,to witness the change of culture(if any)in the team with new head coach and his surrounding. I liked Vanc. finesse offence a lot, but toughness wasn’t their best virtue, to the some embarrassment sometimes as I remember. With Dorsett unproven yet and definite lack of “power personnel” in the team, I’m eager to see, with a grain of skepticism, what’s going to be their mental preparedness.
    in a posttorts era.
Another issue IMO,should be addressed is byfuglien blocking. We can admire all day long, really incredible courage of our guys, blocking the shots, but I was always a firm believer, that the Rangers should stop doing that, despite it occasional effectiveness. First of all, those readily falling bodies most of the time just blocks sight and trajectory expectation for Hank, when blocker miss a puck, not to mention numerous wrong deflections. How many times we saw those painful, almost self-inflicted goals against. Too many. Secondly, our defense spend too much time, habitually laying down in a most dangerous zone in front and around the goal , making it easy to attacking opposition to skate around this live, slowly sliding cones, supposedly second to last, defense bastions. Third, every time when collective Chara makes a swing-up, my bickels goes down, below knees, in expectation of inevitable LTI. Is it really worth, risking your best players’ further ability to play? This quasi-macho, needless culture, like ultimate tactical tool, has to be changed, particular when playing in front of goalie, who is the best in the league in his reaction on pucks WHEN HE SEES IT.

  73. …Sorry, after I placed it, I see that it really looks like a “guest bloggers suck” post. LOL.

  74. Stranger Nation on

Game 7 replay last night Richards gets slammed and is lifted airborne into boards during 3rd period by Great (HGH) Ape. Part of it was Richards’ inability to get out of way, part was Ovi’s mission of pain.

Happens this year and we may be stuck with an anvil of a contract around the neck of this franchise.

    Where is the ‘playable toughness’?

  75. Could have sworn I just saw something here about Rick Nash. Guess I picked the wrong day to give up Visine.

  76. NHL .com ranked our top ten prospects. Kristo = # 1……Sioux is gonna loooooove that!!!! Mcilrath came in second , can’t wait to see what he does in camp ! Let’s go!!!

  77. You think the US sweater is bad, take look at the Russians’. If they weren’t so intent on running gays out of the country, they might have had themselves a reasonably fashionable sweater.

  78. Gravy, Just Gravy on

I think the Russians’ motto printed on the jersey should be “I must break you”.

  79. Rob in Beantown on

I’m sure the Nike logo on the shoulder has Lenin is rolling over in his crystal entombment

  80. If you play hockey and don’t sweat, do you still call your jersey a sweater? In Richie’s case last year, he should call it a leisure suit.

  81. Nike must dump steamshovels full of money on all these sports teams, college and pro, 24 hours a day.

  82. Any Boneheads get tickets yet for the stadium games?Curious to know what seats & price range left I don’t get to buy until Thursday.

  83. Jeff in South Dakota on

Hello from South Dakota! #4 in the US for beer consumption at 38.9 gallons of beer per capita per year. Yahoo!

  84. “Leisure suit” lol.

#19 DID skate at today’s pre camp workout. So at least we got that going for us, which is nice.

  85. Richie’s obviously distressed at some opinions that his best days are behind him. Ergo, we should expect maximum effort and (maybe) a renaissance. Things being what they are, I’m trying to erase bad memories and enthusiastically root for him.

  86. Jeff in South Dakota on

And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

  87. no longer will I participate in the ongoing debate regarding the skill and talent of one Michael DelZotto. His play on a regular basis is borderline Brutal. Ranger brass couldn’t even find a sucker GM who would trade for him, so the secret appears to be out – MDZ no good. Playing without the benefit of Coach Tort’s defensive system (:-), his lack of hockey I.Q. and abysmal play away from the puck will be exposed even further.

This season, I am happy to report I will focus my attention on assesing the play of first line (power?) forward Rick Nash. :-)

  88. BTW,i am still upset over the *RIGGED* bear contest… i thought, and still think, giving the top price to Nasty was a slap in the face to all the participants by Manny…yup.

Sam didn’t get fired, GregL. He moved on and became an edtor of GolfDigest to do what he loved to do. Carp took over ( temporarily, lol) in January 2009. He, Jane, and Laurel cleaned this place up. The rest is history.

  130. Sam rules! Without him, this place doesn’t exist. LoHud has two actual pro blogs, Yankees and Rangers, because Sam and Pete Abraham built them and gained a following. We don’t do blogs for Mets, Jets, Giants, Knicks, etc. There’d be no Rangers blog if not for Sam.

  131. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L on

Sam does rule , he gave us all a forum to talk on . He never charged anyone any money and anyone could say what ever they wanted . It kinda went crazy at times with troll city but all in all Sam gave birth to us boneheads!!

Ilb gave me a bonehead t-shirt years ago and it was too small cuz I was a little off in the healthy department but it now fits beutifully ,ty again ilb.

  132. All price ranges available beginning from $149-$279 a seat. No $79 or $119 available.

I think they kept options for all days as a season subscriber.

  133. Rickie Fowler’s missing something on his orange jumpsuit that Aaron Hernandez does have on his : Bristol County House of Correction.

  134. My first year on RR was Sam’s last year on RR…I found this place quarter into the regular season…time when guys like “Beer Me” ruled the blog….I remember there was a lot of betting going on between ORR, Greg and I Bleed Blue, I think… Sam was kinda lame…I agree with Greg. Sam never interacted with posters…never answered any questions…he would just give you the story and let you do whatever. Then came Carl’s regime…that is when this

  135. Stupid iPhone!! Made me submit before I finish typing my post!

*that is when this blog became AWESOME! With Carl, Laurel, Jane, Claw and Paws blog! Great times!

  136. Sorry…my fingers are not my friends today…been up since 5 am…Summer is over!! Bastages!

  137. I got here right before Sam left. what makes this place great is all opinions welcome, and the fact that Carp responds and will battle you over your opinion if he does not agree. plus the game review’s are can’t miss.

  138. you’re right, bull dog! Beer Me LOVED Renney! He was ready to die for the coach! lol

Beer Me and i had a HUGE argument (about me being a foreigner aka different from ‘murican) which led to Beer Me leaving the blog :)

  139. Hey there’s Carp’s Bonehead!!!

Sorry I was in the wild wild west all week.

I took the bike to the street fair one night, and came across this bonehead. I thought of Carp right away, and took a picture and sent it to him. Thinking he would need a bonehead on his wall :)

He requested a Baby Buffalo, instead of the boneheads we have laying in the pasture back home on the farm. So I bought it, and put it on the wall at work. He’s not a baby probably about 3 years old. The painting on the forehead – looks like a Sioux sundial.

So is Step a Ranger yet?
