Rangers trade Christian Thomas to Montreal for F Danny Kristo

From the Rangers:

Christian Thomas traded to Montreal in exchange for WCHA’S Top Goal Scorer

NEW YORK, July 2, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired forward Danny Kristo from Montreal in exchange for forward Christian Thomas.

Kristo, 23, appeared in 40 games with the University of North Dakota of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) last season, registering 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points, along with 24 penalty minutes. He established collegiate career-highs in goals, points, shorthanded goals (two), and game-winning goals (six), and tied his career-high in assists. Kristo led the WCHA in goals and tied for second in the Conference in points, while serving as an assistant captain with North Dakota. He was named to the WCHA First All-Star Team, and selected to the NCAA West First All-American Team. On January 12, the senior posted a collegiate career-high, four-point effort with two goals and two assists against Colorado College.

Kristo made his professional debut following the conclusion of the WCHA season, registering three assists in nine games with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League (AHL). He tallied an assist on the game-winning goal while making his professional debut on April 5 at San Antonio, and recorded two assists in a home-and-home set against Lake Erie on April 12-13.

The 6-0, 190-pounder skated in 157 career collegiate contests over four seasons with North Dakota, registering 68 goals and 93 assists for 161 points, along with 83 penalty minutes and a plus-49 rating. Kristo was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team and selected as the WCHA Rookie of the Year following the 2009-10 season, after recording 36 points (15 goals, 21 assists) in 41 games as a freshman.

Internationally, Kristo has represented the United States in several tournaments, including most recently at the 2013 World Cup in Ufa, Russia. He registered three points (one goal, two assists) in 10 games with Team USA. He was also a member of the 2010 gold medal-winning team at the World Junior Championships, where his teammates included Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider, and Ryan Bourque. Kristo recorded eight points (five goals, three assists) in seven tournament contests, as he helped lead Team USA to the title.

The Edina, Minnesota native was originally selected by the Montreal Canadiens as a second round choice, 56th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Thomas, 21, registered 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists) in 73 games with the Connecticut Whale (AHL) last season. He was originally the Rangers’ second round choice, 40th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

  1. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

I can’t tell you how good of a player Kristo is, but he has the biggest heart, and a true gentleman.

  2. Suddenly Kristo is 6’0, 190. Montreal had him listed as 5’11, 172. What I can find on him, skilled, good hands, plays some D, loves beer.

  3. Llatonaardvark on

Let’s flip him with MDZ, Brassard, and Syvret for Kane and Bogosian!

  4. My only memory of Thomas will be his tweet of “Whew. Safe” after the Rick Nash trade. Kristo seems to have some good talent and is lightning fast. Also has already played with Stepan and Kreider. *Chemistry*?

  5. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Coos he’s the real deal, he will jump over Miller, and he has everything that Kreider has, plus plays the body.

He will give Kreider a run for his money.

    The kid is 100% clutch!!!

  6. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Coos – that’s what happens when you spend an extra year on the weights, I’ll send you a picture of the weight room at the Ralph.

  7. _That said, not Richie’s fault for taking the money. The booing should be for Sather._

Eh. I’m almost never for the booing, a few exceptions for tangible cases of poor effort, so Richards earned a little by showing up out of shape.

  8. Sioux, heard he never passed up a Miller in college, or a Heineken either. “)) Read somewhere that his nickname out there is ‘Frostbite” which seems to have something to do with, well…not for me to say. Hope you’re right. Babe Ruth liked his cocktails, too and did OK. :)

  9. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Story was – He lost his shoe walking over a hard snowbank across the golf coarse, to visit his girlfriend. No booze was involved. But it was 30 below, and windy, so he ran. Well 2-3 minutes and it was frost bit.

What you WILL like about him, is that Montreal wanted him a year ago, and he chose to stay in school to win a championship. He didn’t want to give up his senior year, on a lockout season. Says ALOT about his character, to give up $1M, to stay in school.

  10. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

He’s 2 full years ahead of Miller. They play a lot alike, so to have Kreider-Miller-Kristo could be our top line years down the road.

The thing about Kristo he wanted to be on the ice when it matters most. He could physically WILL the puck into the net. A true gamer.

  11. this kristo kid will be a rfa next year and is making 1.3 million where as Thomas has 2 years left before becoming a rfa and is only making 970,000. This kid better be really good.

  12. I admittedly didn’t see much of Thomas, but from the little I did see plus the scouting reports, was he ever going to be a top 6 forward here? And if not, doesn’t it make sense to trade him for a guy who could?

  13. Kristo wont won’t ever see NHL ice.

Miller will not be a 1st line center down the road.

    So stfu

  14. I wish the kid well. That he made the unusual decision to stay in school and graduate when he would have been a first rounder does speak well of his upbringing.

  15. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

    FYI –

Kristo was a member of the 2010 gold medal-winning USA team at the WJC alongside Derek Stepan and Chris Kreider.

More recently Kristo led the WCHA in goals, with 26, for the University of North Dakota.

  16. just read a Canadian blog and from what I read I’m not happy with this trade. Thomas is 2 years younger and has 1 full season of ahl under his belt and had decent numbers and played a few nhl games last year also. This kristo kid played in college which is not the ahl. This trade probably won’t mount to much of anything for both teams but I don’t like the trade.

  17. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Nothing against Thomas, I think it is a size issue, and he didn’t really light it up last year.

Kristo plays like a true power forward. Very much like Oshie did for the Sioux. Only he scores more. He snap shot is his bread bread and butter in front of the net. But he will get in there and score the goals like Parise does as well.

    You won’t be disappointed!!!

We all like Stepan & Kreider, he could have a lot of chemistry with these two. They’ve already won a gold medal together. All play for the USA.

How can you NOT like this deal?????

  18. So who is left in the Vinny L sweepstakes? Hard to believe he’d go to the Flyers… Bruins need to resign a bunch of their own guys before figuring out what they have for others… Vinny L to the Rangers for a huge discount to get to play with old bud Brad Richards. Then Marty St. Louis asks for a trade to the NYR next trade deadline.

  19. Rangers couldn’t afford Vinny’s cousin.

Looks like B’s or Flys. B’s need to replace Horton and a few others.

  20. Not like Lecavalier is a bad player, but how the hell does he solve any of the problems the Flyers have?

  21. After last years’ lengthy lockout, Buttman presently negotiating to stop NHL play next year for three or more weeks to send NHLers to Olympics. Probably we’ll see training camp shortened and few pre-season games. All in the interest of “giving the NHL exposure.” Good for Buttman, screw the fans.

  22. Tim Panaccio ?@tpanotchCSN 2m

Source says 5 year $23.5 mill for Lecavalier as a Flyer. checking on that

  23. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Kristo could play for the Rangers out of camp. He will give the 3rd line a scoring threat right from the drop of the puck. Kreider-Stepan-Kristo could be the real deal for the Rangers for a long time.

I’m sure he will start in Hartford, until there is injury. But he is a goal scorer, and he will put points up for the Wolfpack right away. He may jump over Miller as a winger, but Miller is a true Center so they could play together.

  24. If I was vinny I would go to the bruins. I don’t see the flyers making any noise next year. I don’t even think they will make the playoffs. There defense still stinks and now mason is there goaltender.

  25. czechthemout!!! on

Total agreement with Soux! I watch a fair amount of college hockey and I saw this kid at 2010 WJC with Stepan and Kreider. This kidvis a beast. Very talented and tenscious. I would not at all be surprised to see him make the team. He has magic hands and moves. Perfect player if you want puck possesion as your style of play. He takes the body too and is a good finisher. Great trade and a steal by Sather. This McD 2.0!

  26. ‘Atta boy, Sioux!!

Nice move for NYR after plenty of bad ones by the Don Sather. Thomas was UNDERWHELMING and didn’t have enough bite. Glad we got talent for him. Kristo is going to be a player. Loaded with talent according to lots of folks…

I get excited about the Rangers roster when we add young American talent. USA!

The 2010 USA World Junior team had so many great players. I hope we get them all!

  27. Richie Rich, Off Off Broadway

    “I’ve run the gamut, A to Z
Three cheers, and dammit, C’est la vie
I got through all of last year
    And I’m here
    Lord knows I’m here
    Yup, look who’s here;
    It’s me.
    I’m still here.”

  28. Fan reaction on Montreal HF Board:

    1. Officially off the Bergevin fan club. What a terrible trade.
    2. I’m so ****ing angry right now
    3. let me puke, brb.
    4. Gotta think there must be more coming our way, right?
    5. Awful, Awful trade. Was a big fan of Kristo
    6. Are you kidding me? Let’s hope he becomes a good player, I have a feeling Kristo is going to be a good 2nd liner.
    7. Wait..what? Why?

  29. Glennie Slats is small and mean
    Don’t have much to say
Got a burr up his azz,
Kicked Gaby down the stairs –
But I’m all right so I don’t care.

  30. The Undertaker! Ready for Lucic, Parros, Neil? Just keep the puck out of the net, Rocky.

  31. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I like the idea of trading a smurf like Thomas because we have waaaaayy to many smallish guys…
Not so happy to see another smallish guy back in the deal.

Re last thread. Until I see cally or someone else in the top six dropping gloves protecting others in the top six, I’m sticking to no bite!!!

  32. I got to break to a Flyers fan friend, in order, (1) Vinny signing, (2) the years and (3) the no movement clause. I just had a great half hour.

(Granting, if they found a taker for Hartnell, this is actually a positive move for them. If it means they trade Simmonds because “eh, they’re both big and Simmonds has value and we always trade our kids”, its even funnier.)

  33. leetchhalloffame on

How on this earth do the Philthy Phlyers still have cap space? Does Buttman give extra cap room to Snider?

  34. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Konopka is apparently being shopped

I think the hiring of arniel is a horrid idea, loved the ulfie signing opposite end of the spectrum with arniel

  35. Hey Carp

Who’s going to be the first beat writer to ask Viggy why he has two assistants on the bench?

I think Arniel goes up to the bridge, Brown’s still in the mix and I think he runs the powerplay.

  36. I liked Ulf as a player. Hopefully the grittyness that made him a great player is part of his coaching mindset and furthermore, I hope it rubs off on the young guys.

But, at the end of the day, I believe Anton Stralman won’t be giving anyone a facial or battling in the crease…like Ulf did so great…

  37. according to capgeek the flyers are 382,000 over the cap. I would think Holmgren is going to have to make at least one trade to clear cap room.

  38. So how does this work? The Habs think Thomas is better than Kristo, and the Rangers think Kristo is better than Thomas?

  39. Carp
no chance to comment on your twitter post
    in regards to
no chance at Vinnie due to keeping Brad
i don’t know what the folks who weren’t disappointed
    in what’s happened are smoking

    on a side note,
what was Vinnie smoking to sign with the flyers?
have the riots started in montreal yet?

  40. Phlyers? Must have chosen that so he could play with Newbury. What an odd choice from LeCav…

  41. put the flyers ahead of us next year too

div order top 3 make it under new realigment playoff strucuture

  42. Also, Sioux….are you OK? The Rangers just got another North Dakota boy…..don’t hyperventilate!

  43. I know you’re about three minutes away from putting them in 6th, eric, but they can still make the playoffs by finishing 5th. Not all doom and gloom…

  44. Matty "SatherShouldHaveKnownBetter"Boy on

Sorry, but so glad to see smurf Thomas go. Who’s idea was it to bring him in the first place???? Thomas was trade bait, that’s all. Nothing to him. Nothing.

Kristo, on the other hand, seems like he could be a good NHL player. Size is an issue, but he’s got the hands and the drive.

Sioux, what about speed? Has he got some?

Looks to be a good move, front office!!

  45. I like it LW, plus I’m not so sure the caps are going to gather points as easily as they have in the SE all these years.

  46. Matty "SatherShouldHaveKnownBetter"Boy on

Did we not witness the meltdown of Richards for 60 games last year? Did he not show his legs are gone? Did he not show he misses defensive assignments almost every shift? Did he not show most of his points last year were by luck?
He is awful on the PP point. He can’t see anymore. Really????

Vinny can pass and shoot, creative, great on the PP. He is more injury prone, but he’s so much more the real deal than Richards, someone in the front office can’t see talent when they see it.

PLUS, you reduce your cap hit. Find a freaking center to replace this guy and be done with him.

I don’t get it. Ridiculous. Just ridiculous.

  47. I heard Richards was working on his passing, wants to hit opposing players ” in stride ” next season.

  48. Czechthemout!!! on

Why did the Habs trade Kristo for Thomas? What do they know that we dont?

Why did the Habs trade McD? What do they know that we dont?

Why did Pheonix trade Lindberg for Werek? What do they know that dont?

  49. Matty "SatherShouldHaveKnownBetter"Boy on

Eric@7:42, interesting stuff. I agree, we have minimal chance to hit the board. Not so sure Philly or Wash. are the teams that will outfinish us, though.

I know Carp thinks otherwise, and Garth isn’t the best, but if you check out how much cap space they have, the Isles could be LOADED in a few weeks. I’m thinking they are better than us. Columbus, too.

And let’s face it, if this past year was a full 82 gamer, the Derbils would have made the playoffs. Just had untimely injuries to their better players. They are aging, but they could be a contender, too.

The only given is Pitt. Don’t like our chances at all. Agree with that part.

  50. Is This Real? on

    another BLOCKBUSTER

    sather does it again!!

    what’s next?

Darrell Powe to CBJ for RJ Umburger ?

  51. Matty "SatherShouldHaveKnownBetter"Boy on

Can anyone tell me what it’s like to play on a team where one player, one freaking player, is overpaid and just plain sucks??? What does it do for morale when he can’t back up his team-draining salary with the caliber of play expected? Do other guys get jealous of him? Does it cause a malaise in the locker room?

You tell me. I am just a fan.

  52. Matty "SatherShouldHaveKnownBetter"Boy on

Sometimes the ‘small’ deals are what rounds out a team. We could be pleasantly surprised by getting something for nothing.

    Thomas = nothing.

  53. Cross Check Charlie on

Sorry Sioux, but I think you’re a bit too biased to give a fair evaluation of the guy.

I have to agree with CCCP and a couple others. Why did Montreal trade him? If he’s so great, why would they give him up for a marginal prospect in Thomas?

    I guess we’ll find out.

  54. McDonut was nothing but luck. Doesn’t happen often, sure as hell doesn’t mean the same team will make that mistake again.

I’ll wait a little before I start doing cartwheels over some college kid.

  55. I’ll gladly apply my annual phantom $10 blog wager to the Blue Jackets not finishing above the Rangers next year.

  56. duckbill platypus on

This duck just read a Parisian blog, and doesn’t know what to think about this trade.

  57. jpg, just saying, if I had to have a bad contract, I’d rather have Lecavalier’s than Richards’ and VL’s isn’t as bad.

  58. agree, aneirin, I think Brown will be their PP coach. And I think Vigneault will be the kind of guy you could actually ask that question and get an answer.

    still a stupid question, though.

  59. We used to have a guy at the paper who probably had a nice arsenal at home. His middle name was actually “Coffin” and he called himself The Platypus of Doom, The Ardvaark of Despair and The Armadillo of Destruction.

I never said a bad word to him ever.

  60. Carp
YES i know that’s what you meant
    i AGREE with you

commenting on the twitter replies to that being in favor of Brad not (cheaper) Vinnie

  61. Sioux-per-man on

I’m on top of the Moon Manny!!

You are going to love this guy!

He will be a fan favorite. He plays like Cally, has a snap shot like Gaby, and hits like a player we don’t have.

  62. I hope the Kristo trade is not another Korpedo for Lisin. But from what I’ve read and the clips Sioux and others have posted, this looks like a great deal. I really like that he puts on some monster hits.

  63. Sioux-per-man on

Boys I’ve watched him play for 4 years. If you had a son that played yputh hockey you would want him to at like Kristo!

If the Sioux needed a goal Kristo was on the ice. If they need to kill a big penalty Kristo was on the ice. If the game was on the line Kristo was on the ice

  64. Gotta love Philly in the offseason: needs goalie, youth, & offense – gets rid of goalie, drops aging center then signs an aging center.

  65. vinny and 4.8 more then 4.5 phil gave him is better then richy at 6.6 and 2 less years enough said

  66. Cross Check Charlie on

I don’t think Vinny L is done. He may be a bit in decline, but he’s still a good player.

  67. Weren’t people saying that Thomas was next Martin StLouis when Thomas was in college?

They always say good things about kids in college ;)

  68. Yeah, they were saying that CCCP. Except Thomas didn’t go to college. Shows you how much fans know :)

  69. This trade is bigger than the haters are making it out to be. We’re reuniting the 2010 Juniors team. Also, Kristo is legit and the kid will make the NHL before Mr. Invisible, Christian Thomas.

Falk was a great get. Kristo is a good get.

  70. NYR_FAN

did you google that up before you posted your answer? ;)

Junior hockey…what’s the difference? All I’m saying is that, lots of kids look good playing college / junior hockey…

Now go clean your Tortorella shrine ;)

  71. Sioux-per-man on

    Matty Orr Tommy

Check out the highlights above. He’s fast enough, he hits hard, he can steal the puck and score. His defense is as good as his offense.

I thought Kristo would go pro last year and Nelson would stay for another year. Remember the Habs fired everyone so they didn’t have a coach. The season was a lockout so he decided to Stay and play his senior year. Nelson took the money. And was the Islander top scorer on AHL team. Kristo has the same skill set just bigger.

    You will not be disappointed!!!

  72. Manny Sather heard us talking about Thomas on here yesterday.

Lecavalier went to my first choice: anywhere but here. Now for riots in Montreal.

Kristo Richards and a 2nd rounder for Vanek, Glen. Do it do it.

  73. Cross Check Charlie on

Checked out the video that Carp posted. The goal that Kristo scores going 5 hole was really lousy goaltending. I could have scored on that goalie.

  74. Manny, least you have your homeboy, Matt Harvey. Maybe someday he’ll have a supporting cast.

  75. iDoodie Machetto on

I don’t like this trade. Not the worst thing in the world, I’m just not a fan.

  76. Lets trade Nash to The Columbus Blew Jackets for Dubinsky, Anisimov and Erixon.

Lets follow that up with a trade of Veen-yo to the Vancouver Canooks for Torterella.

Lets then sign Mark Messier as a Special Advisor to the President.

    Lets Go Rangers!

  77. I’m not interested in seeing what he’s done in college, juniors or whatever. Lets see how he holds up in training camp, pre-season, etc. That’s where these kids make a believer out of me, personally.

  78. Sioux-per-man on

    This is McD 2.0.

Kristo will play a power forward on the third line. Score shorties on the penalty kill. Steals the puck like Datsyuk and scores.

Thomas was never going to be a ranger, he was an avg Whale player at best. Kristo has WAY more upside. It’s like getting another Kreider only this guy will hit.

  79. Sioux-per-man on

  80. Stranger Nation on

So does Kristo play with Nash and Step right away?

Power forwards are usually bigger than 6 ft. 190 lbs, but I will take a hitter over a smurf any day of the week.

We have five other forwards like Thomas including some Europansies

  81. Curious trade…..read that Kristi may be the fastest skater in all of Habland…can make plays at full speed….what was . Montreal’s reason for the trade?

  82. Gordie Clark re: cam Talbot – “You could go down to Connecticut and watch them lose 5-2 and 6-1 on a weekend and come away saying, ‘”Wow, he played unbelievable (sic). He’s going to give a run for the backup spot.”

No wonder they’re trying to find and stock defensemen.

  83. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Great trade. Kristo is fast, hits like a truck, and has uber soft hands…

  84. Hear Zucc will get a multiyear offer…not excited about that….showed balls in playoffs but totally overmatched…not what’s needed.

  85. Multi-yearing Zucc tells you how thin this roster is. I like him, but I like him as a pinch-hitter.

  86. I’d rather have Chris Christie playing the slot on the PP.

    Christie >>> Kristo

  87. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I agree on Zucc. Not what we need. Big heart. Good passer. Can’t finish unless it’s a SO. And was clearly overmatched in the playoffs. There were moments where he was swatted aside like one of us swatting a gnat.

  88. Wang: “We’ve looked long and hard for an offensive defenseman, and Weiner is as offensive as they come.”

  89. Wang: Weiner’s inching up on our depth list, high hopes, but still has shortcomings.

  90. Say what you want aboot Zucc but he had more points than Nash in the playoffs…second to only Brassard.

  91. Nothing bad about little Zucc, but he’s not the answer to a question that shouldn’t even be asked by a stocked contender.

  92. Saw the news over the weekend and it looked like Weiner was walking with a limp at The Gay Pride Parade…..not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  93. Llatonaardvark on

I’m above eddie and less than NYR on the Zucc scale, but I think Zucc outscoring Nash had much more to do with Nash sucking than it did Zucc shining. Zucc was fine during the playoffs, but he didn’t impress me the way Brassard did at all.

  94. I like Zucc because he has offensive creativity and he makes it work in an unorthodox way…I think he’s earned a contract…

Coos…can we also admit that contenders have +very small elite+ players (Pat Kane, Brad Marchand)

  95. Weiner playing hard ball, staying strong, standing tall and getting under the skin of Christine Quinn.

  96. Rangers Report ?@rangersreport 6 May
Zuccarello is so much better on the PP than any of the Rangers forwards …

  97. Kristo sounds like a good pickup and has played with Stepan and Kreider before. Looks like a smart move just like Falk.

  98. lol… a freaking monkey with a stick would be better than any of the Rangers forwards on the PP

  99. NYR – Things being what they are, I would definitely keep him, but I wouldn’t be so confident as to long term.

  100. McDonuts should have been on the PP blue line from the get go. That Torts never understood the obvious in this and in other issues is why I’m not sad he’s gone.

  101. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Give Zucc credit for playing a tough game while standing 4 ft tall. But he gets pushed off the puck easily, flails around on his skates (tho this year much better than last), and doesn’t seem like he’s earned a lot of respect from opposing players (IMO) – but the kid has heart.

  102. ‘You gotta have heart.
All you really need is heart
When the odds are sayin’ you’ll never win
That’s when the grin should start.’

  103. ‘Oh, it’s fine to be a genius of course
    But keep that old horse
    Before the cart
    First you’ve gotta have heart!’

  104. Look at me
I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I’m clinging to a cloud
    I can’t understand
I get Musky just holding your hand.’

  105. ‘Put me in, coach
    I’m ready to play
    Look at me
    I could be
    Center ice.’

  106. Stranger Nation on

Anyone read the article about Weiner at a club eating a hot dog at a cock fight with some member named Johnson?

    heard Wang was there too

  107. J: “It’s a testicle to Mr. Wang’s desire to beat the bushes in search of talent.”

  108. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Any speculation on who slats trades tomorrow?

    I’m going with bjork.

  109. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

While I like the hobbit, too many undersized guys. Get rid of him.

I’d take a potential injury risk clowe over him any day!

Can we sign konopka and lapierre?

  110. So when I first saw that the Rangers acquired a 5’11” 23 year-old who doesn’t have as many goals as Thomas, I was down on this trade. After some reading and some youtube clips I feel a lot better.

He may not make the team out of camp, but it is also possible he might outshine Kreider, Miller, Fast and company to become the teams best young player.

This camp will be great a lot of good story lines running through it.

  111. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Komisarek and Schultz getting bought out, any takers?

    Just a question btw

  112. Sioux-per-man on

Wicky this is like getting another Krieder or Hagelin on the team. Hagelin played 4 years in college. Kristo did the same thing. He was the point leader on a team that has 15 kids drafted in the NHL. Had Nelson stayed and Miller not bolt this team could have won an NCAA championship. It was a close team. I was shocked when he committed to stay an play his 4 year.

He’s ready. I wouldn’t be surprised if he out scores Kreider Miller Pyatt Boyle Powe Asham Dorsett. His talent is right there with Stepans

This is like winning the lottery for me. If I’m wrong ill buy the first round at stouts for all of you.

  113. Kristo comes from a good program and like the upside ..plus he likes beer and is coming to NY …sounds like a good combination!
