Rangers trade Kris Newbury to Flyers for D Danny Syvret

From the Rangers:

Blueshirts send forward Kris Newbury to Philadelphia

NEW YORK, July 1, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Danny Syvret from Philadelphia in exchange for forward Kris Newbury.

Syvret, 28, registered six goals and 34 assists for 40 points, along with 34 penalty minutes in 76 games last season with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Adirondack Phantoms. He led the Phantoms in assists, ranked second in points, tied for third in power play goals (five), and tied for first among team defensemen in goals. He also led Adirondack with a career-high, 194 shots on goal. Syvret finished the season among the league leaders in scoring by defensemen, ranking seventh in points and tying for third in assists.

The 5-11, 205-pounder has skated in 483 career AHL contests over eight seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Grand Rapids Griffins, Springfield Falcons, Hershey Bears, Philadelphia Phantoms, Syracuse Crush, Peoria Rivermen, and Adirondack, registering 46 goals and 206 assists for 252 points, along with 243 penalty minutes. He established AHL career-highs in games played (76), goals (12), assists (45), points (57), plus/minus rating (plus-seven), power play goals (eight), and penalty minutes (44) with Philadelphia in 2008-09. Syvret finished second among AHL defensemen in scoring that season, and skated in the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic. He was also named a First-Team AHL All-Star following the season.

The Millgrove, Ontario native has skated in 59 NHL contests over five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Anaheim Ducks, registering three goals and four assists for seven points, along with 30 penalty minutes. Syvret tallied his first career NHL point with an assist at Calgary on April 7, 2007, and made his NHL debut at St. Louis on November 4, 2005.

Prior to turning professional, Syvret skated in four seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), captaining the team to the 2005 Memorial Cup championship after posting a 59-7-2 regular season record. He was named to the 2005 Memorial Cup all-tournament team, named the CHL and OHL defenseman of the year, and was named to both the CHL and OHL First All-Star Teams. Syvret also captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Syvret was originally selected by Edmonton in the third round, 81st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Newbury, 31, split last season between the Rangers and the Connecticut Whale, tallying one assist in six games with the Blueshirts and 62 points (20 goals, 42 assists) in 70 games with the Whale. He was acquired by the Rangers from Detroit in exchange for Jordan Owens on March 3, 2010.

Good luck to you, Newbie!! Hope you get some playing time.

  2. Zucc-Stepan-Nash

So THIS is the platoon of forwards people feel we would be ok going forward with?!

  3. That trade makes sense. Newbery wasn’t going to lace them up for the Rangers this year now that Richards is back and Torts is gone.

  4. Danny Syvret was a decent defenseman in juniors but never elevated his game in the bigs. He and Corey Perry used to live in my apartment building when they were training at UWO in London. Boy they looked like kids back then. I still wonder how the Rangers would be if they had drafted Perry instead of Hugh Jessiman. I’m hoping AV might get Syvret back to his A game…

  5. Omg, Newbury, noooo! How will we cope without his 5 minutes a night, 8 games a year!

  6. Good morning, boneheads!

Newbury was a good soldier, good luck to him. Unfortunately ( or is it fortunately ?) this could be the biggest news we get this offseason.

  7. The new blog format is so slow that its even F’ing up the phone of the guy next to me

Wonder if brodeur’s son will eventually room with matteau’s son

  8. Cross Check Charlie on

The Rangers traded for Danny Syvret? Really? Danny Syvret? Wow!

    Wait…….. who?

  9. Yea. The new blog format, on mobile, even when on my home WiFi, is horrendous. Not Carp’s fault. Probably a hassle for him too. Just really annoying.

  10. Danny Syvret! The guy that scored in the Winter Classic against the Bruins. You know, left handed Defenseman (Rangers favorite). Sizeable, nearing 30 “prospect.”

  11. I thought Newbury was important, like bench-Richards-in-the-playoffs-so-Newbury-can-play-5-minutes important

  12. saw Mike Richter yesterday walking past the rink in Rock Center, he’s even starting to look like a money guy – short and balding

  13. I made that point on Facebook in the Blueshirts underground group and some girl got really mad.

  14. People are shockingly into putting Newbury down. The guy is a very hard worker, is still in the AHL at 31, is the Captain of our AHL team and mentors a lot of our kids to play “the right way.” I don’t see what’s to knock. He seems like a good hockey guy to me.

  15. I certainly have no problem with Newbury. I’d take him over Pyatt any day. I’m probably going to hate him as a Flyer though.

  16. Stocking up on lefty defensemen again? We’ve currently only got Stralman and Girardi who are righties, with McIlrath the next in line. If McIlrath cracks the lineup from camp then great if not AV will have to find out who is the most comfortable lefty playing on the right side.

In terms of UFA’s Ron Hainsey is a lefty as is Ryan Whitney. Ryan O’Byrne is a righty.

  17. Last year I was in an airport in the Dominican and they made an announcement that “Ch(K?)ristopher Newbury” was late for a flight to somewhere in Canada and I got excited and told my wife he was a Ranger. Then we got back home and I saw CT was still playing, so it wasn’t him. That’s my Kris Newbury story. The end.

  18. It seemed like the right kind of story for a guy like Newbury. “Hey, this might be kind of cool” but then nothing in the end.

  19. leetchhalloffame on

Flyers continue to add guys who match Flyers central casting from the ’70’s. That’s why they have no shot at winning Cup. Sux for them.

  20. Cross Check Charlie on

“Hey, this might be kind of cool” but then nothing in the end.”

Sort of like the Rangers in the playoffs this year.

  21. “Hey, this might be kind of cool” but then nothing in the end.”

Sort of like a Hagelin break away.

  22. did we trade del zaster yet. i cant fathom bringing this roster back as the same team with changes in the 7ht 8th and 9th d man.

  23. It’s a sad day. The most hilarious professional sports contract of all time will come to an end with DiPietro being bought out.

  24. Good point, Jeff. It’s like the time George W. Bush wasn’t president anymore. All jokes lost meaning.

  25. *Sauer Not Given Qualifying Offer*

Andrew Gross reports that the Rangers will not be extending a qualifying offer to Mike Sauer, who has been out for over a year with a concussion.

If the Rangers were to qualify Sauer, he would occupy one of the maximum 50 NHL contracts they can carry. They obviously deemed the chances that he could return not to be great enough to justify that.

Gross also reports that Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, Mats Zuccarello and Justin Falk received qualifying offers. *He was silent on Nick Palmieri, Brandon Mashinter and Jyri Niemi. Whether that means the Rangers have decided not to qualify them, or rather they are just undecided is not known.* I speculated a month ago that qualifying offers for all three would be unlikely.

  26. Doodie Machetto on

Strang reported Niemi and Palmieri went without, but was silent on Mashinter.

  27. Re: Sauer. Heard he is still dealing with residual effects of concussion suffered Dec. 5, 2011.

  28. Hopes to return to NHL eventually, but Rangers’ decision not to QO him definitely an indication that it’s not a given. Very unfortunate

  29. Jeff – that contract is now not ending till 2029!!!
$1.5m a year for 16 more years!! Wang hahahahahahahahah

  30. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Offers have been made, but have the contracts been signed?

Do you feel any of these offers will be “battles” like DZ was last year?

  31. Czech I don’t see how you remove Pyatt, Powe or Asham from the cap without a trade. And I don’t see anyone trading for them at those salaries. You can send them down but as you noted there is still a substantial cap hit.

  32. Sounds like Sauer’s career is all but over, real shame he showed great promise (and was a righty)

  33. I assume if you waive Powe, Pyatt or Asham someone would claim them.

Why do we want Asham gone though? The guy showed some skills on the 4th line.

  34. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

I hope Sauer can make it back, but at some point you don’t want to do permanent damage to your head. Best of Luck in the Future!!!

  35. Sioux – only Stepan is not arbitration elegible so ultimately McD, Hags and Zucc could go to arbitration and then get settled, only Step’s could drag out depending on Slats negotiating tactics.

  36. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Carp – are you going to the Prospect Camp?

Any interest in checking out the new guys?

I would be interested to see how Pavel stacks up to the rest of the Rangers Prospects.

  37. Manny Asham is an enforcer that can no longer enforce. Couple big goals in the 1/4 final tho

  38. Sioux, tried to go yesterday and couldn’t. Might try to check in tomorrow at some point. No chance I’ll be there July 4 or 5.

  39. Doodie Machetto on

I’m surprised the Islanders are using a compliance buyout instead of a regular buyout so that 1.5 million would count against their cap to help them reach the floor.

  40. Carp – because they’ve drafted nothing but defensemen for years and they figure to try them out while they spend their last season sucking before moving to a new building and trying a bit harder? Plus – would be nice to move into a new building with a shiny new #1 draft pick in the fold wouldnt it?

  41. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Boneheads How would you list our Prospects 1-10?

    6-St Croix
    8-Pavel Buchnevich

  42. yeah, but are they getting better? are they attempting to compete? or are they being Wang’s bargain-basement Isles again?

  43. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, they didn’t toll Thomas’ contract because they don’t want to pay him $5 million to play (especially since he is rumored to be coming back).

  44. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Thomas could be a little higher, he did get one game in last year.

St Croix – sure put up a lot of points, I wonder if that will carry over to the AHL?

Pavel – is truly an unknown, but sure has a lot of hype in Russia. Could he be the real deal in a couple of years?

I’m thinking Bo should be in there, looks like he skates as good as any of them, probably should have put him in 8 or above now that I think about it.

  45. Leaving aside how crazy stupid the Richards deal is, there is hope for the season IF Brassard, Zuc, and Kreider, establish themselves in Viggy’s system as legit, consistent, top 6 forwards. Then you have:

Of course that is one huge IF.

  46. Manny I could be wrong but if those guys get waived and don’t get picked up they still hit the cap even if sent down. And I don’t see anyone picking them up at those salaries.

  47. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

    Matteau – looks good.

Top 2 lines might look a little different.

Richards in the 3rd line – until he can prove otherwise.

Zuc and Hags can fit anywhere.

  48. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Boyle did better along the boards.

I could see Lindberg getting a shot at center. He had a great year in Sweden.

  49. Doodie, I understand why. But they’ve got to have a mile of cap space now, so why did they trade/decide not to sign their captain? because they’re the bargain basement Islanders.

Matteau, is anybody else doing these lines worried that Mats Zuccarello, who might be a 10-15 goal scorer, is on the first or second lines?

  50. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

He did look good on the power play, so he might get 20 goals this year.

  51. Carp YES that’s why I say huge IF. It’s unlikely this team as constructed will be successful.

  52. zucc and hagelin are too overated by some ranger fans. they have zero finish ability. they can skate but they need to produce more and they dont

  53. Doodie Machetto on

    1) Kreider
    2) Fast
    3) Lindberg
    4) Miller
    5) Thomas
    6) St. Croix
    7) Skjei
    8) McIlrath
    9) Nieves
    10) Buchnevich

Honorable mention to Hrvik. If he bounces back to his form from before his consussion, I put him just behind Lindberg.

Also, a caveat: I think Miller is the most likely out of all the prospects to have a meaningful NHL career, I just think his upside is not as great as Kreider and the two Swedes.

  54. Doodie Machetto on

Zuc and Hagelin both are playmakers. Hagelin has a little bit better finishing ability, but he definitely leaves something to be desired there.

  55. Matteau, mostly agree. I love the Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett 4th, especially if the latter two eat up big PK minutes, but I just don’t see MZA being a top 6 forward on a really good team. Keep Nash/Cally/Kreider/Miller/Brassard/Stepan/Kreider in the top 9, find 2 more legit 2nd/3rd liners (with the stupid Richards dollars) and its nice enough.

  56. Keeping my fingers crossed that in the next 24 – 36 hours Sather/Ownership pull the plug on the Richards experiment.

  57. Rob in Beantown on

Highly doubt Richards gets bought out after the announcement was made to him and the public that he would not be bought out

  58. _Highly doubt Richards gets bought out after the announcement was made to him and the public that he would not be bought out_

I keep hoping it was worked out between NYR and the Richards team that we’d pretend to keep him hoping for a face-saving trade.

  59. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Doodie I put Miller over Fast & Lindberg, just because I think he will be a blueshirt before them.

Lindberg & Fast will start in Hartford, just to get use the ice size. But Lindberg will be the center to take Richards place when he is bought out next year.

McIlrath could be the next D-Man to get a shot, but I don’t see him jumping over anyone to get a start out of camp, unless there is an injury.

  60. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Mr – not with the new cap salary. No team will take that on. He plays this year, and then gets bought out.

  61. doodie

yes they are playmakers but when given the chance to score on the doorstep of the net it seems they never do. we need more goal production out of them over 82 game season.

where did you end up seats. the upgrade process ends at 12pm today. go on and check see if something opened up last minute

  62. _Mr – not with the new cap salary. No team will take that on. He plays this year, and then gets bought out._

I thought we learned never say never when Gomez was traded for a legit prospect and a decent enough role player. Hockey is seemingly the last sport where you see those completely stunning “what was that GM thinking” moves with semi-regularity, meaning something like Toronto accepting Richards and handing off Grabovski’s contract (or something) would make sense in an unlikely but plausible wow-Sather-did-it-again sort of way.

  63. Rob in Beantown on

If Richards is traded and then retires, do the Rangers get hit with his cap benefit recapture penalty or is it the team that takes on his contract?

  64. They do get charged, Rob. For the full amount of cap advantage ( the number representing money paid over cap hit )while he was with the Rangers. Not only that, the team he is traded to gets charged for whatever cap advantage they get. Trading him is taking more chance than not buying him out this year.

  65. Here’s the best I can figure it out, Rob. The cap recapture hits the team that benefited, so if we traded Richards this offseason and he retired heading into his 3 $1MM seasons, it would breakdown like this …

    Total Recapture: $17MM
NYR Portion: $10.67MM (2 seasons at $12MM paid vs $6.67 cap)
TOR Portion: $6.33MM (4 seasons at decreasing cap hit)

    Penalties: $5.67MM per year ($17MM / 3 years)
    NYR Annual: $3.56MM per year
    TOR Annual: $2.11MM per year

  66. Doodie Machetto on

Sioux, that’s fair, but as I said, I think Fast and Lindberg have much higher upside than Miller. Miller just looks like a solid third liner. A Manny Malhotra of a first round draft pick if there ever was one.

  67. Doodie Machetto on

Gross reporting that Mashinter was qualified. Answers my question from earlier.

  68. Someone mentioned that contract counts against the cap if a player sent to AHL. To an extent. Essentially, this year a team gets $925K cap relief for each player on one way contract who is sent to minors.

  69. Carp,
Any chance NYR calls Clarkson camp to see what the cost is? Or why just no $$.

  70. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

This is what Tambellini is looking forward to, and this is coming from Colborne, from a visiting team.

“I’m telling you, I’ve had the opportunity to play a Game 7 of the NHL Playoffs in an Original Six battle, and the feeling in both Toronto and Boston was unbelievable, but I don’t even know if you can compare it to the atmospheres that I felt in North Dakota and in Wisconsin,” said Colborne, with a fondness coming through in his tone of voice. “The fans love to get on you, they have chants that everyone in the entire stands knows, Wisconsin has little dances that they do—it’s an atmosphere you’ll never be able to replicate anywhere else but in college hockey.” –

    See more at: http://undhockey.areavoices.com/#sthash.0AeGX2RB.dpuf

  71. no doubt they’d be in the Clarkson hunt if they had money. but they don’t. i wouldn’t. he’ll be terribly overpaid.

  72. Why wouldn’t Toronto trade Richards for Grabovski? 1 reason …

    1. Grabovski is a younger, better player making almost $12MM in real cash less than Richards over the next 4 seasons.

    BUT …

Why would Toronto trade Richards for Grabovski? 4 reasons …

    1. Richards is a leader ™ whereas Grabovski is an enigma.

    2. Richards is Canadian whereas Grabovski is a Euro.

    3. Richards is a winner who has won a Cup and is thus able to win future Cups whereas Grabovski has never won a Cup and thus isn’t a winner and thus is less likely to ever be a winner (unless he becomes a winner in the future, at which point deciding someone is destined to never win because they’ve never previously won is somehow never brought up as stupid, and that label is inevitably passed along to some other player who is no more or less likely to win than anyone else once the talent level of his teammates is factored out).

    4. It would make me very happy and I don’t even really like Grabovski.

  73. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

He’ll make the Flyers squad…..which will make the game even more interesting!!!

  74. Rick DiPietro will receive 13 paychecks each year worth $115,385 apiece (before taxes) until age 48. #NYI

hal gill anyone? whats his contract

  75. Hagerstown Md Rangers fan on

For those of you who have invested in Kris Newbury jersies the NYR organization has announced that you can trade in your Newbury jersey for a vintage Glen Sather jersey. The NYR organization also advises that you hurry while supplies last.

  76. Afternoon folks, that whole DiPietro payout is so ludicrous. Has anyone talked to him about whether he will still try to play in the NHL or if he will just sit on his fat stacks of cash for the rest of his life

  77. _Any chance NYR calls Clarkson camp to see what the cost is?_

I think Avery probably called him camp a few times. He didn’t seem to like it.

  78. Llatonaardvark on

TOR seems to be a favorite to Clarkson. If they get him, along with adding Bolland, those are two pretty solid additions.

  79. Breaking: DiPietro has sustained “multiple fractures” believed to have been sustained on falling off a fat stack of cash.

  80. Is This Real? on

Rangers cannot go to war with this current line-up. Richards should be motivated and might be able to crack the 3rd line. i imagine something like this

    miller- richards-zuc

    not gonna get it done!

  81. _Grabovski is a crazy person who bites people._

Richards is one hit away from ruining more than a half decade of our salary cap.

  82. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

You guys are nuts if you think those top two lines are anything other than cannon fodder for big tough checking or top lines on other teams. They are smallish with no bite to them what so ever.

If those top lines are the ones everyone is counting on for our team next season, we are screwed!!

You guys better hope that slats does a torts 180 on the Richards decision before the buyout period ends or they unload some serious D men contracts before the start of the season and have 6 beukes starting on D because that is the only way any of those top 2 line smallish forwards will survive

  83. Oh, I would take Grabovski and his contract over Richards and his. Just pointing out that Grabovski is insane.

  84. why do I get the feeling that in Darth Sather’s sick mind he isn’t buying out Richards because he doesn’t want Richards to sign with the Canucks and reunite with tortarella.

  85. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Now this is what I’m talking about

    Andrew Gross @AGrossRecord
Dylan McIlrath just slammed Marek Hrivik into backboards. McIlrath got good leverage on check. Hrivik lifted off ice.

  86. Yea. Injure Hrivik again. He wasn’t supposed to be gritty or anything.

Can we please get Mcllrath and Falk up here to be our 3rd pair?

  87. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Instead he’d rather let clowe sign with the isles or devils and pound us into the ice all season

  88. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Falk and mcilrath a must this season. Get rid of Staal, OPG, and the mad bomber now!!!

  89. Bye, bye Stralman. I like that idea. Trade Staal before his eye falls out and we are stuck with him (Sorry, Mark!)

Go get me a REAL defenseman or top 6 forward with size, grit and fists.

  90. Won’t The Vig turn that lineup into a scoring machine like the Penguins with his more offensive minded system? We’ve got nothing to worry about.

  91. Cross Check Charlie on

“is anybody else doing these lines worried that Mats Zuccarello, who might be a 10-15 goal scorer, is on the first or second lines?”

Carp, I’m worried that he’ll be on the roster! Let him go back to Europe. I don’t see him as a legitimate NHL player. To keep him just because he’s good in a shootout is ridiculous.

  92. Darth Sather! That’s great. We should all chip in to send him the helmet prop that Rick Moranis wore in Spaceballs

  93. @DarrenDreger 6s Bozak contract talks expected to resume today with Leafs. Proposal on the table believed to be 8 years at less than $5 mil per.

  94. Llatonaardvark on

Maybe Brassard will be moved with MDZ, Thomas, Syvret, and a pick for Kane and Bogosian.

  95. Stranger Nation on

Sioux suggest you catch a Cornell Big Red hockey game if you want to see chants and a band that travels to away games. They sell out the MSG every year and probably could do it more than once if opportunity provided. Not bad for an Ivy League school with no scholarships to give.

They don’t have as many pros as ND but probably more professionals…

  96. _CCCP – not if it was from CATS_

Sioux, you mean my pastrami made from cats or from the KATZ’S? :)

  98. Once again, Stepan actually Centers the 1st line. Therefore, when he’s out on the ice he’s against the other teams shut down guys. Not entirely a fair comparison.

  99. Bogosian to Rangers rumors are heating up again. Word is, Bogosian asked to be traded to New York to be closer to his grandma who lives in Brooklyn.

Per local Winnipeg writer Bob Bullsheetskiy

  100. @GardenFaithful Word has it there will be no bridge over the rink at MSG. No Torts. No bridge. Henrik wins again. #AllHailTheKing #BloodOnThatWhiteGlove

  101. How about walking away from and trading some contract and attempting to acquire Vanek? he’s going to outscore everyone on our team not named Nash this year no matter where he plays and he’s 29.

  102. The thing is Charlie, in this stupid shootout format, Zuc could gain us 5 points all by himself scoring shootout goals. I still think that we just can’t tell right now how this team is going to be with a new coach with a completely different philosophy. The team is still pretty young. I think I’m worried more about our defense in this new style than our offense. Do we have the kind of puck carrying defenseman to set up plays and to play a puck possession game? I’m not sure unless Staal comes back. Moore and MDZ can do it but can they be consistent and not make disastrous mistakes. McD could probably do it too, but do we really want him to? And do we have the right stay at home types to let guys like MDZ and Moore be creative. And I think if our D can be creative, then our forwards will score more. I think you can play a speed game to counteract size. It’s been done MANY times.

  103. Llatonaardvark on

I really hope there is no bridge, Manny. I always thought that was such a stupid idea.

  104. The bridge is the stupidest idea ever. It will result in nothing but death.

  108. So a center with 4 other players and a coach who have no idea what theyre doing on special teams play should be able to create something in the post season. ok I’m with ya Manny- trade Stepan too!…..but keep POwe

  109. Hope you all join me in frequently reminding wicky that he just said Callahan has no bite to his game whatsoever.

  110. Yes, James. If they can’t do it alone they can’t do it at all. Trade ’em all. Bums.

lol re: Richards/Hamrlik. Sounds like he’s blaming those two on Slats, when it seems obvious that he, himself, was the foremost Richie fan. There were plenty of other choices out there for 60 million simoleons.

  122. Ruslan Fedotenko’s agent, Allan Walsh, tweeted that the Flyers winger signed a three-year, $9 million deal with HC Donetsk of the KHL.

    good nhl career

  123. Colorado Avalanche place Matt Hunwick on waivers.
It will be interesting to see if any team puts in a claim on Hunwick. The 28-year-old defenseman had six assists and a plus-4 rating in 43 regular-season games this season.

makes 1.6 mil for one more year. if he made less rangers sign as depth def not with that salary

  124. always thought that assistant coach was supposed to be
hard aassen to the head coach.

  125. Bergeron reports torn rib cartilage, broken rib, separated right shoulder, punctured lung, yet no surgery needed, AND will be ready to play at start of camp, two months off.

Not at all disparaging Bergeron’s grit, but seems he or someone else kind of pumped up the obituary.

  126. In the Navy, the Captain was beloved, his Executive Officer feared and disliked, by design. Rangers seem to have had both officers in the second category.

  127. Richards / Torts thing reminds of Pearn / Redden thing. Coach gets his old buddy singned for two boats of money and then gets fired sticking us with a player on a downside of his career.

    Sather is a sucker.

  128. That goes double for me, James. I have not made this place smooth. I should trade myself.

  129. So #NYR essentially got Justin Falk for a draft pick. #MNWild didn’t qualify Benn Ferriero, and will become a UFA.

  130. Red Wings have been told they are not in the Vinny Lecavalier bidding war. Sounds like he’s close to deciding.

good one less team in east for him no to go to.

    hopefully dallas it is

  131. Story about NHL teams and their amnesty buyout status:

includes this item regarding ya boys:

    *New York Rangers *
Perhaps the most compelling buyout candidate of all was centre Brad Richards, but he will not be bought out. The Rangers already used up one get-out-of-jail-free card on defenceman Wade Redden, but Richards is safe — and so are the other Rangers players — the team announced Friday afternoon. “He’s already on borrowed time,” says Hockey Central insider Nick Kypreos. “The Rangers can’t afford to keep his long term deal that might not be played out. No matter how much his play could improve next year, contracts like Richards’ with retirement years are a disaster for teams and their future cap hit.”

  132. Kypreos for GM!!!

at the very least he’ll be available to the
media much more often than Slats

  133. Weird to see a former player make his media name not by being loud or controversial or by simply showing up, but by being good.

  134. I wonder if a young bubble team with no buy-outs now or needed in the future would trade for Richie. He’ll have a bounce back year, bring leadership and could be a good 2nd/3rd line center. Then after the season they can buy-him out. Edmonton?

  135. I can’t imagine another team would acquire Richards for a buyout. The only hope is someone exchanging a bad but less bad contract thinking Richards is the superior player.

  136. Maybe that should be Sather’s approach. Offer Richards for pennies, then when the GM rightly rejects, fire back with “oh, you don’t think Brad is a champion?” and “oh, you don’t want to bring a good canadian kid back home?” and threaten to go to the media.

  137. So if 3 to 4 young guys like Kreider, Miller, Lindberg, Fast, Thomas, etc. have a great camp and make the team (And play well) does Richards spend the season as a black Ace? Does he get sent to CT? No idea, just wondering.

  138. He has a no-movement, so Black Ace or ice are his only options. Well, or trainers room, I guess.

  139. from Gross via coverage of today’s scrimmage

Blue: F Anthony Duclair-Boo Nieves-Christian Thomas, Sergey Tolchinsky-Carter Rowney-Michael St. Croix, Steven Shipley-Alexander Krushelynski-Josh Nicholls, Alex Gogolev; D Conor Allen-Dylan McIlrath, Charlie Dodero-Brock Beukeboom, Vojtech Mozik; G: Ryan Faragher, Mackenzie Skapski

White: Marek Hrivik-Kyle Jean-Pavel Buchnevich, Adam Schmidt-Andrew Yogan-Thomas Spelling, J.T. Barnett-Patrick Brown-Eric Robinson, Kyle Stephan; Ryan Graves-Sam Noreau, Ben Fanelli-Troy Donnay, Teddy Doherty-Brady Skjei; G: Eric Levine, Jeff Malcolm

Steve Fogarty isn’t there yet due to summer class

  140. not buying out Richards is suicidal. How moronic is Sather in this move not buying out Richards, stupidity at it’s finest.

  141. _not buying out Richards is suicidal. How moronic is Sather in this move not buying out Richards, stupidity at it’s finest._

I imagine they’re pretending its the same as signing Richards to a 1 year, $3MM contract and ignoring the massive injury risk.

  142. Does a NMC mean the player can’t be sent to the team’s AHL club? Dang, I did not realize that. So the Rangers can’t even send him down to clear cap space or pray that a drunk GM picks him up off of the waiver wire? Wow. Glen “I don’t need no stink’n options” Sather.

  143. Edmonton trades for Richie, pays him, in effect, 40 million for one season, then lets him go? Ahem.

  144. Yeah, that’s why my shot-in-the-dark had Toronto losing $20MM of Grabovski. Even then …

    This sucks.

  145. Rangers West

due to new CBA i don’t think a player can be
sent to AHL and have contract not affect cap.
    no more being Reddened

  146. Off season, Richie should change his first name to Boomer so that next year Salmon Joe can tell us the fans are not booing, but rather cheering- on old Boomer.

  147. That said, not Richie’s fault for taking the money. The booing should be for Sather.

  148. Vinny L will go to MTL, VAN, or TOR. We have no need for him. Need a defenseman with a rocket from the point for the PP.

  149. Vigneault has said he wants a coach to run the power play and one to run the penalty kill. Under Arniel, the Blue Jackets were 29th on the power play in his one full season and 22nd on the penalty kill.

great a guy with 29th ranked pp

  150. Hearing the #Rangers traded Christian Thomas to #Canadiens for Danny Kristo

    according to kypreos

say goodbye to steve thomas kid. hardly knew you

  151. I don’t get that deal at all, kristo making 1.3 million and is a rfa next year while Thomas is making 970,000 and is a rfa in 2 years.

  152. Sioux-per-man 10.0 on

Looks like I’m the last one to know.

Couldn’t get out of the oil can :)
