Rangers acquire Falk (not Faulk)

Little bit late. Was in transit to lovely downtown Newark. Gary Bettman has already been roundly booed once. … UPDATE: Twice.

From the Rangers:

Blueshirts send forward Benn Ferriero and a sixth round pick in 2014 to Minnesota

NEW YORK, June 30, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Justin Falk from Minnesota in exchange for forward Benn Ferriero and a sixth round pick (originally Columbus’) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Falk, 24, registered three assists and 40 penalty minutes in 36 games with the Minnesota Wild last season. He posted a plus or even rating in 27 of his 36 contests, and skated in his 100th career NHL game on March 27 against Phoenix. Falk also skated in four playoff contests, making his NHL playoff debut on May 3 at Chicago in Game 2 of their Western Conference Quarterfinal series.

The 6-5, 220-pounder has skated in 108 career regular season contests over four seasons with Minnesota, registering one goal and 14 assists for 15 points, along with 100 penalty minutes. He established career-highs in games played (47) and penalty minutes (54) during the 2011-12 season. Falk notched his first career NHL goal with a power play tally on January 24, 2012, at Colorado. He finished the 2011-12 season ranked fourth on the Wild with 78 hits, and ranked eighth among NHL rookies with 78 blocked shots.

Falk made his NHL debut on March 19, 2010, at Columbus, and registered his first career NHL point with an assist on October 19, 2010, against Vancouver.

The Snowflake, Manitoba native has also skated in 189 American Hockey League (AHL) contests over three seasons with the Houston Aeros, registering six goals and 20 assists for 26 points, along with 172 penalty minutes. Falk established AHL career-highs in assists (11), points (14), shots on goal (72), and plus/minus rating (plus-16), and tied his AHL career-high in goals (three) in 2010-11. His plus-16 rating led the Aeros that season. Prior to turning professional, Falk captured the 2008 Memorial Cup as a member of the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Spokane Chiefs. He was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star team after registering two points (one goal, one assist) and a plus-four rating in four tournament contests.

Falk was originally selected by Minnesota as a fourth round choice, 110th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Ferriero, 26, tallied one assist in four games with the Rangers last season. He was acquired by the Rangers from Pittsburgh in exchange for Chad Kolarik on January 24.

Can you imagine how that kid feels right now? In between Roy and Sakic, first overall, 17 years old. unreal

  2. Carp, on the board they are showing the NYR as having pick 27 from CBJ. They just changed it back to reality.

Sather almost thought he had pulled off a fast one!!!

  3. Czechthemout!!! on

Does not look like this team will do much in terms of trades to improve the team. So any kind of help will have to come from Miller,Lindberg,Fast. Otherwise boys, thats it!

  4. Arthur Staple ?@StapeNewsday 14s
#Isles have acquired Cal Clutterbuck from the Wild for Nino Niederreiter.

  5. Craig Button very effusive in his praise of Darnell Nurse. So his career projects as maxing out as good as Brad Richards in 2013.

  6. Llatonaardvark on

Still think Neiderreiter will end up a better player than Clutterbuck, but the Islanders did well to get something for the malcontent.

  7. schneider the the next goalie of the devils for the next decade. one year beihind brodeur and then the devils goalie of the future is there.

    lou did it again.

  8. I’m with LW. You guys think it’s a good move for the Isles?

NN was projected to be a first liner in the NHL. The Isles completed screwed his development. And, now they a third liner back for him?

Could be worse I guess. But, we would be tearing Slats a new one if he traded Kreider for Clutterbuck…

  9. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

If we were under torts still, yes I would have done the trade, under AV not so sure

    To amend my earlier post

  10. Is This Real? on

“Torts is hanging out by the jukebox in the corner. Doesn’t sit at tables”

  11. CCCP must be impressed by Mike Modano failing to pronounce correctly the tricky Russian word “Russia”.

  12. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Lol. He hasn’t been able to speak properly since the part medics dropped his stretcher

  13. Good afternoon all! I’m not going to let the draft ruin my Sunday…Love love love love love! that Bettman got booed…..glorious!

  14. Olga Folkyerself on

I just started reading War and Peace. I bet I can finish before the Rangers make their first pick.

  15. Sather got up 20 minutes ago and has not returned. Either working on a trade, excessively long bathroom break or grabbing some shut eye for next 3 hours till his team has a pick.

    I vote for #2.

  16. Slatsko Folkyerself on

    Slats itinerary:
20 minutes to walk to the bathroom
10 minutes waiting for empty stall
10 minutes fumbling with colostomy bag
15 minutes waiting for bashful kidneys to start
15 minutes trickling past swollen prostate
30 minutes waiting for pee-soaked pants to dry
10 minutes fumbling with stuck zipper
10 minutes screaming after he zips himself up in zipper
15 minutes fumbling with lock on bathroom door
    15 minutes washing hands
10 minutes negotiating double doors to bathroom
30 minutes explaining to security what he as doing in Women’s restroom
20 minute walk back to table dragging toilet paper stuck to his shoe
10 minutes to find his chair again
15 minutes trying to re-light his cigar stub.
5 minutes putting out shirt and tie fire
15 minutes asking everyone “When’s our turn?”

And still has at least an hour before Rangers first pick.

  17. As somebody who has projectile vomited on a bathroom floor in the Prudential Center, I empathise with Slats’ toilet adventure.

  18. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

The rangers credo is : ” draft ? what draft ?”
live and die by the trade and FA signings… Sather must still be having LSD flashbacks

  19. Czechthemout!!! on

My friend who is at the draft, just called to tell me that the hazmat teams have been called in by the bathroom that Sather walked into.

  20. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Article I linked earlier stated he was going to run the d and the pk.

  21. Slatsko Folkyerself on

AV to Sather: “I had nothing to do with it. You got Falk Yourself.”

  22. Slatsko- Easily the funniest itinerary I have ever read…CLASSIC !!
Wonder if Falk meant as possible Staal replacement?? Can we say goodbye to Hammer yet??

  23. Tortorella off to a fabulous start! “Luongo is shocked and doesnt want to give any interviews. He thought his time in Vancouver is done. 2 shocked goaltenders right now”

  24. Dreger: ?@1
TRADE Anaheim deals Bobby Ryan to Philadelphia for Flyers’ next three picks in the draft. Details to follow

  25. Has any team ever had picked a good player in the 3rd after not having a 1st or 2nd? In other words, can you grab a decent player after sleeping for the first 6-8 hours of a draft?

  26. Czechthemout!!! on

So Sather couldnt trade Mdz and two third round picks for him?

    What an ass!

  27. I guess Slats was sleeping in his hotel while Ducks were offering Ryan all around the draft

  28. Czechthemout!!! on

Oops! I forgot. We dont have any cap space because we have a great washed up center getting paid 6.6 million who we did not want to buy out.

  29. At least we have Falk!
That will be the missing piece that puts us over the top!
    And we have Richards! Yay!

  30. A lot if moves being made today. I wonder why NYR aren’t involved in any of them? Oh that’s right, they have no cap space because they decided to keep paying a practice player 6.67 million a year!

  31. It’s a fake as that account also retweeted a fake Mckenzie tweet of a trade of Phaneuf for Zetterberg and Kronwall

  32. Czechthemout!!! on

A tremendous amount of great talent still on the boards. Many first round quality players still around, perhaps as many as another 30-40

  33. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I have a rfa question, if you “qualify” them, does that mean they are locked into that price for a one year deal? What sets the qualifying contract amount?

  34. Oy vey….the thought of next season makes me hugely thirsty…Do I even want to watch first game between us and Vancouver??? It will be insane!!!!

  35. bull dog line on

Ulfie was better against the Rangers than he was for them. I could care less that he is an asst coach.

  36. Canucks, try as they could, couldn’t dump Luongo’s salary, so now he and Torts can butt heads. Should be fun.

  37. Just means you retain their rights and they don’t become UFA, wicky. The player doesn’t have to agree terms on the qualifying offer.

  38. Llatonaardvark on

It would be pretty funny if Luongo refused to play for Canucks. Poor Tort!

  39. wick, it’s a small raise, like 25 percent, that they can accept or reject, by by making the offer the team retains the rights to match an offer sheet or be entitled to compensation. if the team doesn’t make that offer, the guy becomes a ufa.

  40. Hey guys. Just got back from Gay Pride parade 2013 (not the orchid show, LW). Thankfully Wicky kept me updated.

Love the Falk acquisition. Huge kid with a bit of experience. Could be a huge upgrade over our current 3rd pair.

Schneider in Jersey is a disaster. Especially when they convince Hedberg to waive that NTC.

Amazing how quickly the Isles replace the whole left by Streit.

  41. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

So since the cap is going down this season and up next year to a supposed 70 mil, why wouldn’t you have the rfa’s take modest raises on a one year deal and give them longer better deals next year for the cap flexibility this year?

  42. You would as the GM, wicky. The people on the other side of the negotiation probably wouldn’t so easily agree though.

  43. I know next to nothing about Zach Fucale, but Craig Button seems to think he will be the best goalie in history based on his W-L record on a stacked junior team.

  44. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I certainly don’t disagree with you, nice to think a guy might do that to help the team improve.

  45. I hope there is a clause in Schneider’s contract that allows him an out if his paycheck bounces….

  46. Rangers Report ?@rangersreport 1m

Devils take Mahopac’s Steven Santini, a defenseman from the US developmental under-18 program, in the second round (42nd overall).

  47. Rob in Beantown on

Funny that a kid from Mahopac, probably a Rangers fan, gets drafted by the Devils

  48. Of course they take Santini. They love kids that have an NHL history in their family.

  49. trading for ulf was a disaster in terms of what we gave up, but hopefully he will be better behind the bench.

pretty boring not having any picks in the first couple here. would have loved to have moved up for zikhov, but having no 2nd rounder really hurt

  50. since all news so far is ugly and
we don’t pick til 3rd round
just got back from seeing Now You See Me

  51. Santini seems like a nice, well-spoken kid who plays with an edge. Best of luck! Looks a bit like Girardi, but handsomer.

  52. Vancouver Press to Torts: “How do you feel about your 2013 picks?”

Torts: “You writin’ a book? Don’t try to coach.”

  53. Czechthemout!!! on

Jordan Subban will be our guy if he is there. Big shot, great skating and stickhandling skills. Short but not small. Will probably it around 5 10″ -11″ and 195 pounds when mature. Could be a steal. Eric Comrie will be the next kid. A goalie. And then another dman.

  54. Olga Folkyerself on

Slats just tucked a newspaper under his arm and is heading for the Mens Room again.

  55. Czechthemout!!! on

Lets see how Tort’s vaunted defensive system works with a mediocre goalie. I bet it does not work so well.

  56. Kid’s 5’8 if he’s that big. You gotta be really good to be a factor in this league at that size. Maybe he’ll grow.

  57. Sportswriter to Slats: “Thought you said you didn’t read the papers.”

Slats: “I don’t, I just like to have extra toilet paper.”

  58. Czechthemout!!! on

Spencer Martin is another good goalie prospect. Also that Diaby kid is huge and can skate well.

  59. Rangers Report ?@rangersreport 8s

Rangers’ first pick of the draft, at No. 65 overall, is Adam Tambellini.

  60. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Sather: “The New York Rangers select for their first pick of the 2013 Draft…”

    Drew Jessiman!

  61. Czechthemout!!! on

Figures. The kid is soft and takes shifts off. If not, he could have been a late first pick.

  62. Llatonaardvark on

wicky, I think Marko Dano had a 3 on that compete level gauge and yet they were lauding his willingness to go to dirty areas and the fact he doesn’t give up on the play. So I dunno about the accuracy of these things.

  63. Czechthemout!!! on

Thats why i want the Subban kid. He is short but tough. Torrey Krug is 5 9″. No one questions his height or his toughness now, do they?

  64. So we drafted a guy that is phenomenal provided he will leave the KHL. Which would mean getting him to love the idea of a two way contract.

    Sounds promising!

  65. So the kid that plays in the KHL is lazy, takes shifts off, is soft and is iffy on making a career in the NHL.

  66. Czechthemout!!! on

This team just throws away draft picks year after year. We will never see the Russian lazy soft kid.

The Duclair kid maybe a good one, but is soft.

Interesting that all three kids are soft as butter.

  67. Czechthemout!!! on

He sucks! We will never see him here. Luke warm on playing in the NHL.

  68. Surprised Chicago overpaid for him. But he works so well with Toews and Kane. Not a bad idea

  69. Is that Peter Falk’s son? I’ll have to do a little detective work. Surprised he didn’t sign with Columbo.

  70. The Rangers, with no cap room, have told teams they’re willing to trade Ryane Clowe’s rights. Hes UFA July 5

thanks for the 5 games. well worth 2 picks.

    what a disgrace we are

  71. Czechthemout!!! on

Amazing! Traded a second and a third for a guy to play 15 games!

    Fire Sather!

  72. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

We are back to absolutely zero playable toughness in our top 2 forwards lines and we are worried about re-signing midgets Hagar and mza.

  73. Yeah Wicky I don’t understand not re-signing Clowe – guess they don’t want to take any chances with someone who is concussion prone.

  74. Leetchhalloffame on

Since when is Brock Beukeboom in the Rangers system? I see he’ll be skating at NYR Prospects Camp this week. Last I saw he was drafted by St. Louis a couple of years ago.

  75. no cally and hags to start the year throw in the fact prob 8 game road trip to start with garden renovations we could be 1-6-1 and no toughness

i have no problem not resiging clowe but whose his replacement for cheaper tell me

  76. Cross Check Charlie on

During the season all I read was how slow Clowe was. Now the Rangers don’t resign him and it’s terrible.

This place can be mighty fickle.

  77. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Knowing Sather, just how did you guys THINK this was going to turn out?

I’m predicting ninth place for 2014.

  78. There’s always hope, but I fail to see how we’re going to be tough to play against this fall.

  79. Further to @Real_ESPNLeBrun news from earlier, I’m told a handful of teams are interested in acquiring Ryane Clowe’s negotiating rights

Assuming the Rangers want a pick back in the deal. Team is up against the cap pretty tightly, can’t afford to take on salary right now

  80. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I have never had a problem with a guy if he is a slow skater as long as he knows what to do when he gets there. Plenty of Rico fata types with wheels that have zippo hockey sense.

I’d take ryane clowe any day!

  81. there is no more 9th place.

realigment playoff structure top 3 of 8 in ranger div make it.

  82. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Screw the scoreboard, we are going to get our butts kicked nightly unless slats has something up his sleeve to get some playable toughness in the top 6

  83. Slatsko Folkyerself on

The only thing up Sather’s sleeve is some green snot that seeped through from the outside.

  84. Cross Check Charlie on

Clowe was let go by a team about to make a playoff run. Except for his first game I didn’t see anything special that he did in his short time with the Rangers. He had two concussions in one season.

Not resigning Clowe is no big deal.

  85. Cross Check Charlie on

Just looked at the profile of the guy the Rangers drafted. 6’2″, 158 pounds. Are they going to use him as a stick?

  86. keep in mind anyone who wants tix to email me baum27@aol.com

section 214 row 4 seats 1 and 2 aisle seats . face value.

76 per seat 152 for pair. would like to sell 3-4 games to someone

  87. Leetch – last I heard about little Buke was that he was playing in the OHL for Niagara. ???

  88. Slatsko Folkyerself on

I haven’t spent a dime on the Rangers since the lockout. So far, I see nothing to change that…

  89. When I was 17, I was 6’2, 170 and I was a pretty tough hombre. Now I’m 225 and a bit softer, but with a better demeanor.

  90. so Prust retweets this
    Brian Gionta ?@Giostyle21 1h
Congrats to the newest members of @CanadiensMTL family. The future is bright! #Habs #nhldraft

if Cally was on twitter he’d probably tweet something
    like this
    We’re SCREWED!!

  91. Wow. Boston GM on Tyler Seguin –

“I know he got criticized for playing on the periphery and all that stuff. He did. He’s got to commit to being a professional and focusing on the game. Simple as that. He does that, we don’t expect him to be crashing and banging. Just play your game.”

Chiarelli said he hopes the trade talks give Seguin a reality check: “If it doesn’t, I’d be more concerned,” he told the Globe.

  92. czechthemout!!! on

Sather can’t be naive enough to think that we don’t need to make several changes to the bottom six and a PP point man can he?

  93. @NYRangers: Gordie Clark, #NYR Dir of Player Personnel, says 3rd rounder Pavel Buchnevich reminds him of the late Alexei Cheraponov, past #NYR No. 1

  94. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Andrew Gross @AGrossRecord
Clark said even though it was frustrating not to have a pick in first two rounds, acquiring Rick Nash and Ryane Clowe was worth it.

Apparently not if we are letting clowe walk

  95. iManny

    i’ll go there.
better have Pavel get a full check up.

(in a sour mood about anything in Rangerland)

  96. Rangers Dir. of Player Personnel Gordie Clark said hardest part of not having pick in 1st two rounds was seeing so much talent walk by

  97. What an awful day for NYR. It seems like everyone in the metro area was making moves and improving (with the draft being held here) and we stand still and do nothing. That Richards move is already looking good two days later!

  98. biggest disgrace is we trade 2 picks for clowe who plays 15 games and wont be back. what a waste

  99. Carp, any comments (off the record of course) from the inside about how bad a day NYR had today because the Richards move totally handcuffs the team?

  100. iManny,
A lot of things can happen in this crazy world but Slats doing the right thing isn’t one of them. NYR are screwed for this season (and many more if 19 gets hurt).

  101. eric,
why is it that the nyr never understand the value of draft picks? Especially now in this capped NHL you need to keep your picks. It’s amazing how bad he mismanaged the team this season and now continues to do so. I was really hoping someone inside nyr would make float something about how bad this Richards move has messed up this organization for this season coming and possibly many more.

  102. Rob in Beantown on

It would be a pretty you know what move to buy out Richards after telling him and telling the world he would not be bought out

  103. The spiral started this year and continues……

Blueshirts will miss they playoffs next year, you can bank on it………

And the debate then will be whether we should dump Richards or Nash with the final compliance buyout. ;)

  104. The sense of dread we had this morning was well founded. It was really great to watch other teams get better all afternoon. I hate that I love this team.

  105. I know. I know. But I can dream, right? We can assume that our management sees other teams making positive changes and thinks, “why can’t we so that?”

  106. BTW, Slatsgo post on Sather itinerary @ 5:09 is the post of the year!! I was laughing so hard it took me 15 minutes to read through it!

  107. And that’s the sentence C-Dubs. The one that sums it all up. “I hate that I love this team.”

  108. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Andrew Gross @AGrossRecord
Tight under deadline but just a Ryane Clowe clarification: Not having money to fit him under cap is not the same as not wanting him back.

Well if you wanted him back then buy out Richards IMHO

  109. I’ve got such a bad feeling aboot the upcoming season, it’s depressing. I’m going to enjoy every day of summer as best as I can.

That means Dexter and Breaking Bad final seasons! Weeeeeeee! Then the misery begins.

  110. How dumb of a GM do you have to be to give up a 2nd rounder and then walk away from the player because of a different mistake you made!
    The mistakes never end!
And then he is handed an opportunity to fix one of the f-ups and he doesn’t take it!
    It’s maddening!!!!!!!!!!!

  111. ORR!!!

Not me, C-Dubs. When the Whalers left CT I coul have picked _any_ team. I even have family in Montreal! But I did not choose wisely. Like the guy in “Indiana Jones” (the Holy Grail one) who chooses the wrong chalice. Oops!

  112. Ah, Manny, the chalice with the pestle is the vessel with the poison, the chalice with the brew is the one that is true…oops [showing my age, this is Danny Kaye]

  113. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Was at the Rock today. Live in Jersey. A pathetic showing by our team. Strapped by the Richards non-buyout, then the 3 draft picks-for-nothing-dumbest-trade-ever-not-for-Clowe, we are so far off the mark it’s silly.

The only thing to look forward to (and I agree with Eric, this team is not playoff bound next year), will be the ‘FIRE SATHER’ chants, which should start by game 20.

Both the Icelanders and Derbils will be better than us, in fact, not so sure who won’t be. In the good news area, that means we should get a solid number one pick (if dummy doesn’t trade it away again), but the bad news will be twofold. First, will Henrik want to stay to watch this crap? Second, we don’t know how to draft even when we get a good pick.

How many more coaches will he be allowed to fire until Jimmy realizes it’s the GM, not the coach???????????

    Awful. Just awful.

  114. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Hey, guys, no problem. This weekend starts Free Agency!!!!!

Oops, we have no cap room.

    Is this a nightmare?

  115. Rob in Beantown on

You’re right Wicky, not having the money to sign Clowe wouldn’t be an issue if they bought out Richards. Sather makes mistakes, but even when offered a get out of jail free card he doesn’t use it and just compounds his mistakes

  116. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

Winning the cup is hard enough , sather makes it impossible.. too bad the fans won’t boycott by not buying tix..

  117. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Sad thing is, so few are tuned in right now that understand, it will take till the team performs pitifully for the ‘masses’ to understand what has been done to this team in 2 years time. Perhaps a few losses to op

It’s really about the worst a front office can perform.

  118. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Could be worse. Sather could say we don’t have he money to resign MacD because we have to keep Richards.

At this point, nothing would surprise me. Nothing.

  119. Onecupin74yearsandcounting on

behind all the glitzy training facilities and a shiny msg facelift , the NY rangers are 2nd class

  120. Rob in Beantown on

Hank masks so many of Sather’s mistakes, Sather has to be self-aware enough to realize that, right?

  121. If I were Richards, I’d *ask* to be bought out. What’s the point of playing for a team that’s pretty much guaranteed to buy you out the following year? Why not take the buy out, and start looking for a team that’s interested in you?

  122. Rob in Beantown on

Well for one Richards is supposed to get $9 million next year. If he gets bought out he only gets 2/3 that and over twice as much time

  123. Is it really that big of a deal though? It’s not like he’s not going to be paid by another team. He’ll probably get a decent contract from some dumb GM delusional enough to think a change of scenery will do him good.

  124. Rob in Beantown on

Wouldn’t you sort of be embarrassed if, on what was supposed to be your big draft day, your dad had to pull some strings to get you drafted?

  125. Matty "HopeNashIsMonsterInYear2"Boy on

Orr @11:27, we have already seen that Richards has no pride. How else do you explain coming to camp unprepared for the season with the magnitude of a contract he has? One of our most important players, truly needed by the team, and THAT”S how he shows up?

No, sorry, it’s all about him and dollars. And he makes more dollars this way.

  126. Not easy to remain patient. But market for NYR hasnt changed, excepting Clutterbuck. VL decision froze the action, but he & agent are sensitive to it and promise quick decision. Expect nearly all players bandied to move in short order. Except Luongo LOL. Hang in there.

  127. Rob in Beantown on

The league is trying to play the Brodeur drafting like some great father son moment, but I think to most observers it has to appear a little pathetic

  128. Sioux-per-man on

    Sioux-per pick in the 3 rd !!!!

    Rangers pick Sioux freshman Tambellini.

    Now keep him there!!!!

  129. i just watched some Pavel Buchnevich highlights. This guy is pretty good. in this years U-18 tournament he had 5G, 6A in seven games, a lot more than Miller. He has two more years in the KHL though. could be a good one, of course he may never play a game here either.

  130. little Fatso now has something to put on his tombstone: NHL DRAFT PICK/ Got that out of the way.

  131. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Richards is more physical than Clowe. If anyone gets to rough with a ranger, you will be dealing with #19.

  132. He’ll actually get 9 million this coming season, down from 12 mil last year.

  133. Cigar face can still buyout Richards up to July 4th….c’mon Slats make it a happy 4th.

  134. Slats to Pysie – “We’re expecting big things from you this year, kid.”
