It’s Go Time! … Game 4: Bruins at Rangers

737

As you’ve seen/heard by now, Brad Richards is a healthy scratch tonight, and is certainly done as a Ranger (unless they somehow come back in this series, maybe?) …

He will be bought out after the season, the Rangers paying him $24 million  over 14 years as a parting gift that will remove Richards’ salary from the diminishing salary cap.

Bruins at Rangers.

Final game at MSG? Final game of the Rangers’ season?

Anton Stralman is out after being squished by Milan Lucic in the second period of Game 3. Roman Hamrlik will make his first appearance of the playoffs in Stralman’s place.

Arron Asham is also scratched, not sure if he’s healthy. Micheal Haley and Kris Newbury are in for Richards and Asham. Chris Kreider will also play, despite an injury he suffered in Game 3.

  1. Anything said against him is viewed as having an agenda against him. Yet no one has any problem having an agenda towards Richards for example. Richards couldve easily avoided the media today and several times this year. Media has to guess what mood the coach woke up in every day. Quite the leader.

  2. Marc Savard’s tweet is as out there as Hull’s.

Tortorella should get fired right after the game he has ruined all of his players confidence #Richardswillget80pointsnextyear #ByeByeTorts

Haley and Newbury in…..they need to make Bruins feel them

  12. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

LW – odd though that Hull and Savard, two impressive former players, went public so quickly.

  13. As Savard is still technically a non-retired, paid employee of the Bruins, does the league take kindly to public pronouncements a that another team’s coach should be fired?

Not saying it is a big deal, but the league tends to be a bit sensitive about stuff like that.

  14. No Pierre “Personally Offended by the Rangers PP” tonight! obviously he was our jinx so far this series, so this is nothing but good news so far! Also really liking the kreider, brassard, nash line. Lets Go Rangers!!

  15. I have to put up with Brian Engblom’s rambling all night long? NO WAY! The Mute button will be quite busy.

JR – “it may be true Hull is not dumber than me, but I’m sorry, even I take a back seat to Engblom”

  17. Why don’t any of you understand that the reason the crowd is quiet is because we’re all sitting on this blog instead of being at the game?

  18. King with no Ring on

It was desperate of Torts to play McIlrath instead of Hamrlik today. He is trying to pull out all the stops to extend this series. Oh…

  19. Let’s pass to McDonagh who’s covered on the wing instead of the open man in the slot!

  20. are those shots considered oppurtunities? at this point i’ll take anything in the bruins end as a positive

  21. I’m gonna make this game memorable by parachuting into the center ice faceoff circle from the score board in 3……2…..1……lookout below

  22. SufferingSince79 on

One consolation I have regarding a Richard’s buy out is knowing the Flyers will be paying captain moonbeam until 2020 and that in order to sign him they provided the Kings the means to win a Stanley Cup. Misery, meet company. Company, here’s my friend misery. Lets go Rangers!

  23. They keep on saying that they will go to the other game at 8. Will we in NY still have the game on?

  24. He said it was nice not have to shade his eyes from the glare of the lights off Pierre’s coconut

  25. what other channel are the rangers on? on time warner thats my only option. I am gonna lose it

  26. I am not impressed by either team so far…smells like both feel inevitability

  27. MDZ “afraid to make a play” again there as he turned it over trying to deke around a second Bruin in the neutral zone…

  28. Steve Ott ?@otterN9NE “@joegud: @otterN9NE @smallenfreuden What do you think of the benching of Brad Richards?” Absolutely ridic, he is a game changer!

  29. Missed a TV timeout there with the lack of a stoppage in the last seven minutes. Tough carcillo, Mr Jacobs.

  30. Every pundit, analyst, writer, ex player with a voice jumping on the Torts sucks, Fire Torts, bandwagons.

  31. Slatsko Folkyerself on

    Richards buyout.
Sather making more millionaire retirees. He’s better than a pension plan.

  32. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Re-watching this game, I’ll have to count how many TO, regardless what the stat sheet says, MDZ has tonight.

  33. Czechthemout!!! on

So some decent things happened. The fourth line of the Bruins was neutralized. The new fourth line did some good things.

Now for the bad. Torts has still not made an adjustment on how we come out of the zone. They still try to rim the puck around the boards even though it is clear to even a blind man that the Bruins have that covered. Yet, no adjustment made.
The PP still has MDZ on it on one point, Stepan on the other point. Amazing!

  34. Hammer and Eminger in a decisive 2nd round playoff game tells you just how thin the talent level is in the NHL.

  35. boxcareddiehospodar on

i may be too optimistic but it does not seem the bruins are taking many liberties against us tonight.

next game sit either stephan or hagelin. they are both playing very tenative and just pass the puck to no one.

    bring up mashimnter

  36. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

The rangers passing to the bruins more than to each other. This game has a funeral-like feel to it.

  37. Norm Merton on

Richards is behind the bench whispering to the guys, “You stink. Pass them the puck. Be soft on D. You stink. Heh, Heh.” And did you ever notice what big teeth he has? He’s the worst player off the ice. I can’t believe they let him in the press box. And he has big teeth, like a horse.

  38. Eddie, take your time, you’ll probably have all summer to re- watch this one.

  39. CTBlueshirt on

Really don’t know why they decided to scratch 2nd leading scorer Asham

  42. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

There must be something going on in that room. This is as bad as they’ve played all year.

  43. boxcareddiehospodar on

time for newbury or haley to drop the gloves and get the place going.

  44. The Ranger forwards need some of that Duluth underwear….need to “get a pair’

  45. Norm Merton on

Yes, Richards’ teeth are indeed large. It’s important to note, when a once-great athlete hits the skids, that his teeth are oversized. Ha, ha, ha! They’re so big, they resemble the teeth that a horse has in its mouth. He’s like a horse! With the big teeth and all.

  46. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

If there is a hockey god, we will see this go 7, then whatever, but first just some intensity and passion….

  53. Rob in Beantown on

This is an elimination game and its tied after one period but its the least stressed I’ve been watching a Rangers game all season

  54. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Norm – there is nothing funny or unfunny about Richards’ teeth. They are just big. No worries. More importantly, the rangers gave the puck away at every turn.

  55. King with no Ring on

If there was a stampede in the seats, would the other fans even notice while they are using their iphones?

  56. Rob, if they won’t fight, you make them fight by going after one of their young DMen.

  57. maybe we can sign jagr next season and bring dru back for a bit, snatch gomez away from the stanley cup winning sharks too. show these young spuds how to do it!

  58. bold prediction of the night: Rangers score 2 goals this period (knock on wood)

  59. Norm Merton on

Yeah, Eddie, but they’re just so damn comically big, right? Seriously, how can you not laugh about those crazy-ass teeth, especially now that he’s been benched in an elimination game after an all-star career. And another thing, while he’s been struggling this year — because of his teeth, I think — he’s been making more money than me. He must be lazy and a bad person, again probably because of those teeth.

  60. i dont get it… why can’t they keep that game on the channel it was on and just start Detroit game on the other channel?

  61. I said all year the rangers should buy out Richards after this season even though some thought after next season. I’m happy to see the rangers management have come to there senses. One more bum and salary off the books.

  62. King with no Ring on

The Rangers can not afford to fall behind in this game. They have played well to this point.

  63. funny how people on this blog killed Dubinsky because he was making to much money and my argument was Nash isn’t a super star and didn’t make Columbus better and won’t make the rangers better but is getting paid like a super star at 7.8 million. I give it to the middle of next season Nash will be the new whipping boy.

  64. SufferingSince79 on

Sad how Nash came to NY to play with more skilled players and have chance to win. No Gabby. No Richards. Same team. Higher cost of living. No winning. Ugh…great goal. Here we go.

  65. Czechthemout!!! on

Boy, if they backed in any more on that goal, they would be in the seats with the fans.

  66. FlaRanger
Richards will be working in Drury’s place folding pizza boxes

The ownership of that pizza place has an annual combined cap hit of $13.8 million per fiscal season.

  67. “Sad how Nash came to NY to play with more skilled players and have chance to win.”

agreed….would have been nice if he helped

  68. TommyG, obviously ignoring my MisterSoftie posts Re: Nash. He’s already on my WBM.

  69. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck got a $24 million buyout payment?

  70. TommyG I always said that! Nash is a good player, not a superstar. I watched him for two years as a graduate student in Ohio. His contract is terrible too! He will be making a ton and I think he is post peak.

  72. Carp, that’s so obvious! :)

These “fans” at MSG don’t deserve a final salute….I’m really really pissed

  73. Norm Merton on

Ha, ha, ha, Woodchuck!! That’s funny, I get it. You’re saying that the benched Richards’ outsize teeth resemble the teeth that a woodchuck has! So that in that way he is comparable to a woodchuck!! Only that probably a woodchuck is better on the Power Play. Richards is a WOODCHUCK!!

  74. boxcareddiehospodar on

nice matador play by stephan on the goal Ola

at least newberry is trying and not intimdated!! more than hagelin and stephan

  75. carp, so would I, if you remember, I really didn’t want Nash. If people can go back at the time in those post you will see I was against it because great players make player around them better, not the other way around and now we have a 7.8 million dollar contract that won’t be worth the player, like Richards, like drury, like redden, like gomez, see a pattern here. Wake the fugg up dolan and clean house and for god sake hire competent management.

  76. I might prefer to buy out Nash & Rehab Horse Teeth. Sorry Norm for the HT comment.

  94. Papa Bear
TommyG, Rangers need Torts to lead them through next years transition phase.

yea, something the rangers are good at every few years. I’m starting to think sather has a dart board in his office with one side showing who to draft, one side who to sign via free agency and one side who to trade. While sitting in his chair smoking a stogy he flings the darts at the board and where it lands he makes his decision.

  95. Admiral Akbar on

    Sather = great at trades

    Sather = ok drafts/player development

Sather = absolutely awful at free agents

  96. Oh yea, the “Player Transaction Dart Board” .. Sometimes he gets lucky.

  97. Slatsko Folkyerself on

And the only dart in Sather’s office is stuck into the side of his head…

  98. How does Sather have a job? I mean really? He over pays for everyone! The Garden, despite the age of the teams playing there, really does not have many championship banners hanging for the rafters. This city deserves better.

  99. Slatsko Folkyerself on

    Sather = ok drafts/player development?

I beg to differ. Want me to start another list?

  100. Five percent on the power play. Come on, that means it could still be worse!

Re. Krug the punk. Do the Rangers have any goalscoring punk defensemen in the system?

  105. What? MDZ is a top 4 defensemen Stemmer. Maybe you didn’t get the memo? It’s been circulating here all year. :)

  106. Admiral Akbar on

Sather orchestrated the No Gomez trade, which is genius.

Also did well with people like Prust, Sjostrom, etc.

  107. Czechthemout!!! on

So we had a nice spurt of play late in the second but did not score after that nutty goal by Hags. Usually these things work like this. Rangers come out and put on some heat on the Bruins the first five or so minutes, dont score ( what else is new) and then the Bruins score two or three more and final score is 4-1 Bruins.

  108. King with no Ring on

I am interested to learn in the postgame if Lundqvist attributes that magnificent Krug goal to a lucky bounce.

  109. did i just hear right? the 2 dummies on cnbc just said”its a slippery slope for the bruins ONLY up 2-1″

  110. I don’t know about anybody else but I’ve seen enough of rangers hockey this year, trust me, it’s better that the bruins put the rangers and there fans out of misery. Why would you want the rangers to play one more game, especially in Boston. There is no need for it, really.

  111. Embarrassing listening to Roenick describe lack of effort in a playoff game

  112. Eddie. Never give up hope with the Rangers. One year again we might be rewarded for staying loyal to the end.

  113. Admiral Akbar on

    Merton–

I direct my frustration at this fellow Krug who has decimated the Rangers in this playoffs. He is playing really well in this short series. Lets see what happens next serason (refer to Kreider).

Rangers are supposed to have Del Zotto. But that hasn’t worked out well. McIrath is a project. So, nobody in the system can score as a defenseman. Forgive me for my frustration.

  114. TommyG, with each extra game, Torts has another opportunity to step on it and commit a major infraction with the media or the league, which may help lead to his termination.

  115. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Draft picks 1st & Second rounders- Dylan McIlrath Christian Thomas Michael Del Zotto Evgeny Grachev, Alexei Cherepanov, Ethan Werek Antoine Lafleur Bob Sanguinetti,Artem Anisimov Al Montoya Lauri Korpikoski Hugh Jessiman Ivan Baranka Nigel Dawes Lee Falardeau Dan BlackburnFedor Tyutin Garth Murray

And when he does find a decent player, he trades them off or releases them outright.

  158. As the son of Tony from AZ says…..sorry all…Jesus Tits!!! Or JT as we all say….

  159. Admiral Akbar on

    Win a face off…. Bodies to the net…. Shot on goal… Deflection…….

  160. great, lets stretch out the misery a little more, why not, ranger fans are use to it by now.

  161. Norm Merton on

Tough OT coming up — win it and all you’ve done is prolong the agony. Lose it… stinger. I say prolong the agony.

  162. Krug this.. Krug that.. didn’t know skating the puck out of the zone was such an amazing feat. And the announcers fail to mention all the screw-ups he’s had.

  163. Rick Nash gliding around reminds me of Jagr’s last few games As a Ranger. He must be so frustrated on the inside but to the rest of us looks like he just can’t hack it. Hope he is hurt and not a bust!

  164. Czechthemout!!! on

    Papa

Amazing right? Right back to first period mode on the breakout! Skate it out through the damn middle already. As I said before, a blind man can see that the Bruins have our vaunted breakout figured out.

  165. Onecupin73yearsandcounting on

Ok there will be a game 5 Saturday, Hank can’t be this BAD..

  166. Czechthemout!!! on

Krug is ten times the player MDZ is. He is what we all thought MDZ would be. All the mistakes? Funny!

  167. I love (most of) you all, but this is one of those times I wish I was not a hockey fan

  168. Cnbc will probably cut to their regular programming in the middle of overtime! No respect

  169. Kenny Albert Rules! on

Kreider not looking terrible. Anyone like what Hamrlik did or would Gilroy have been better?

  170. Kenny Albert Rules! on

John Giannone – bruins have made dman changes while possessing the puck in the rangers zone 3 times in the last 2 games.

  171. King with no Ring on

    Blogmama

When did Torts say hartnell? Hartnell is not on either team.

  172. Kenny Albert Rules! on

Don Lagreca just made a Martin Brodeur reference. Marty was 3-11 after first 14 OT playoff games. #15 was game 6 vs Dallas to win it.

    Not portending well for Rangers

    Holy Carcillo!!!!

    Game over! Sweep Avoided!!!

    Miserable Season Continues!!

    Undefeated without Richards in lineup!!!!

  176. Norm Merton on

Next time we hear the Nash-never-scores business, let’s not forget that pass. God, what a hockey play by both guys — no grind, no grit, just hard skating, hard stop, hard pass, great goal.

  177. boxcareddiehospodar on

and kreider was not good enough to play the entire year.

The only lineup change should be strahlman for hamrlik and clowe for zuccs

  178. Admiral Akbar on

Too bad Richards wasn’t sat down earlier…

Great work by Kreider. Great play by Nash.

Way to hang in there in OT, Hank. Your boys rewarded you!

  179. The atmosphere at the Garden in the final period + overtime was loud.

You called it, Admiral & King. Kreider was flying all night.

  180. NBC apologizes for Tortorella’s language but not for rushing to jump from the game coverage.

  181. Admiral Akbar on

This Bruins team won the Cup in 2011.

This Bruins team also lost to Caps in first round 2012.

This Bruins team also choked a 3-0 lead in games to Flyers (Jokinen Shootout Loss) despite leading 3-0 in Game 7.

This Bruins team CAN BE HAD.

They are just as capable of choking as they are capable of winning. This is still a winnable series. Shift by shift, period by period, game by game.

    DARE TO DREAM BIG!

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!

    RANGERS

    GO

    RANGERS!!!!

  186. Add your game 5 !!!!! I actually was enjoying this tonight. Sort of like a convict enjoying a big meal before….

  187. The game is slowed down in Nash’s head, the thing that separates the very good from the good. This game is too fast for Richie. Will Torts have the gonads to sit him again? Ham and Eggs, #40, 44 glaring multi- car pile up waiting to happen. The swift BC kid played Okay, not great, but the goal should restore confidence, make him feel more a part of this group. That speaks to good prospective.

  188. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Hank has won many games in Boston in his career. The B’s will rue this day come next Wednesday.

  189. another game = another chance to give marchand a permanent seat next to marc savaard.

  190. I’m with Eddie – ruuka won’t be up to the TASK on Saturday ! LGR!!!!!! Holiday weekend of baked Boston beantowners!!

  191. Hammer played more positional defense in his limited time than #44, who, though I like him for his tenacity and grit, scares me half to death each time he goes over the boards. I was scared half to death numerous times tonight, so I must be completely dead and dreaming that I’m posting.

  192. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Brassard continues to lead the team in scoring. He will have a big game Saturday. I believe we can win this series.

  193. The question, coos, is whether he’ll have the nads to put Richards back in. Not that he deserves it, but will T. consider a chastened star’s response to being scratched or go with the ineffective Haley and Newbury again? Either way is a gamble.

  194. Will Richie be given another chance to go for a 100% long-term Cap-busting disability pension?

  195. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Get an early lead in the first period in game 5 would be ideal. Coming back from 2-0 in game 4 – amazing resolve.

  196. Coos, what if he slips on the way up to the press box and breaks his leg. can he still be bought out or are we back in LT Cap Busting Pension area again?

  197. If Kreider can be a legit LW on a line with Nash it fundamentally changes the prospects for this team, including whether to look at next year as contending or transitioning.

  198. IMO, if it’s up to Torts he will put Richards back in the lineup. I think that Sather had finally seen enough and had him sit. Torts probably went along because he knew that Richards would get booed like crazy. If he plays again and gets hurt it will set this franchise back tremendously.

  199. Rask joins long list of those who hate Kreider. He’s right behind Torts, just ahead of Richards in the I hate Kreider line.

  200. Newbury took a costly and stupid penalty and won zero faceoffs. I did think he made some good plays here and there, but overall I’d say it’s a pretty big risk having him out there, as it is with Richards. No easy answer.

  201. Admiral Akbar on

Ex3 – we are vibin’ about Newberry.

    Richie sits.

Now watch him play for Toronto or Islanders.

  202. Really wish JT Miller’s wrist was doing better. Would have liked to see him get some playoff minutes.

  203. Richards can’t dress for Game 5….if decision has already been made to use the buyout…you can’t risk injury and be stuck with him and his cap hit

  204. Torts speaking: “Brad Richards is a hell of a hockey player!”

No, he’s not any more. He used to be. I appreciate the loyalty, but it has been way too misguided.

  205. Eddie, I admire your optimism and your view of the Rangers’ resolve. But they were dead in the water at 2-0 when Rask turned the game on its head. They did at least accept the gifts, though, and show some pluck after that. And that OT goal is right up there.

  206. Norm Newberry hits and will take a hit to move the puck. . He’s certainly not perfect but he played better than -horseteeth- Richards

  207. 2-0 Wings. Cleary into the empty net.

He’s always someone I’ve envisioned being an NYR.

  208. i was one of the few that said Detroit will beat Chicago. Looks like it’ll happen. Proud team. Proud coach.

  209. Wings playing like a legit Cup Contender. And to think, this was suppose to be a year of -rebuilding- transition.

  210. Any lineup changes for Game 5? Richards back in? Clowe? Stralman > Hamrlik (who was *not* bad)?

  211. Newbury did his best with what he’s got, and I love it that he got a look after such a good year in Hartford. I just don’t think he’s good enough to compete at this level, but I hope he takes a hit to score a goal if he’s in the next game. I’d go with the pedigree, though — if there’s a response from Richards, there’s a greater upside.

  212. Let’s face it, Tortorella’s lip lock on #19 cost this team dearly, 5 on 5 and power play for a long, long time. If Sather made the decision, good for him.

  213. I think Newbury should get a REAL look as a 4th line Center for us next season. We finally have a 4th line with our backs against the wall. I’m fine with the one we have now. Haley-Newbury-Dorsett. Bring it.

  214. Hawks 3-1 down to the #7 seed after two straight first round exits, Toews goalless in nine games, Kane basically benched late in the third.

Obviously comparing apples and oranges, but it does show that these things happen to other teams too.

  215. I love that after almost getting swept we are in the same boat that the President’s Trophy winning ‘Hawks are in.

  216. Double joy – toothless Chicago sucked big time and can start preparing to pack…

  217. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Orr – perhaps so…. Ranger’s first 2 goals were out first good bounces this series.

  218. If Richards ever gets in front of the net, it’s his own net and he stands before it zombie-like and flatfooted while big opponents bang away at Henrik’s pads. How many times do we have to see it?

  219. @NYDNRangers 18s
Torts says it’s his decision, blame shouldn’t fall on Richards, tells media: “Kiss my (***) if you want to run something different.”

How can anyone now love this guy?

  220. Very impressive. That’s all I can say- thought we had little to no chance tonite , especially without Strahlman- I stand corrected. By the way, no question that Chara is hurting big time- if you get a chance rewatch the game and just watch him. It’d be a kick to somehow win saturday and watch the beads of sweat form on Claude Julien’s head.

  221. Torts telling the Press in salty language what they can write and can’t write. Talks about Richie like he was Lou Gehrig.

  222. Norm, the 2nd round of the SCP’s is no place for sentimentality. Richards must sit again in game 5.

  223. I think, not using Ash is a mistake. So far he was the best in ratio “scores/TOI” tough enough an with a good shot.

  224. I appreciate the nobility and toughness of a veteran pro like Newbury. But, the guy is due for a bad penalty almost every game. Better than Richards? …not sure anyone would say that or thinks that.

Call me crazy (I was in attendance tonight) but sounds like fans look for reasons to blame Tortorella, even during wins.

  225. OMG Epic Typo by me! I love Tort.

    @NYDNRangers 18s
Torts says it’s his decision, blame shouldn’t fall on Richards, tells media: “Kiss my (***) if you want to run something different.”

How could anyone *NOT* love this guy!?

  226. Carp: Gehrig and Jack Kerouac both had football scholarships and played for Columbia. How’s that for worthless, but interesting trivia?

  227. Sentimentality? Good Lord, I just want to see the Rangers win, and trying to out-grind Boston will never work. Rangers won with open-ice goals tonight, and I think Richards gives them a better shot at those. I’ve never met the guy, as I suspect is the case for most people here, so it pisses me off when everyone goes all third-grade and kicks a proven player when he’s down. There’s not a soul left on this blog, including its moderator, who is able to notice any more when Richards makes a good play. I’d say it’s likely he has some more good hockey in him before he’s officially done, more NHL minutes ahead of him than Newbury, and perhaps the Rangers can take advantage.

  228. This organist in LA sounds pretty good. Recognized some Pat Benatar and some Doors over the television..

  229. What’s come over the Rangers? Movement on the power play; Snarl on the 4th line; An OT win. The rebirth of THE KREIDER! All resulting from the benching of Richards!! (s)

    Amazing!

  230. Carp tells the Press “don’t try to coach,” but he thinks he can tell them how to write. He’s becoming more and more brazen with everyone and, like Caesar surrounded, he will one day look for his pal Brutus and Brutus, too, will be holding the knife. It is the destiny of despots. On the other hand, LGR!

  231. Norm I’m with you on not getting personal and kicking someone when they’re down, especially with the horse comments, but seriously hockey-wise how can you possibly see Richards making any contribution and being anything other than a liability. I mean do you watch him, I don’t think it’s possible to exaggerate how bad he is.
