It’s Go Time! … Game 2: Rangers at Bruins

Must win? Not yet.

But you probably don’t want to play with those matches again, right. The Rangers came back from 0-2 for the second time in team history against Washington, so you really shouldn’t figure that can happen again, right? I don’t think the Rangers are dead at 0-2, but they’d be really close to the cliff.

Game 2.bruins logo
Rangers at Bruins.

The Patrick Elias Sports Bureau just informed me that in the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the winner of Game 2 is either 2-0 or 1-1 in the series. And that either the winner or loser of Game 2 has gone on to win the series 100 percent of the time.

Same lineup for the Rangers, which means no Marc Staal (eye), Ryane Clowe (probable concussion) or Darroll Powe (probable concussion). Henrik Lundvist in goal vs. Tuuka Rask. Duh.

Sounds like the B’s won’t be getting back any of their injured D-men, Dennis Seidenberg, Andrew Ference or everybody’s favorite, Wade Redden. So the kids will play again.

And the Rangers power play rolls in at a hefty 6.4 percent clip.

Don’t forget to vote for the Three Rangers Stars, and to follow me (and Josh Thomson, 26) on twitter: @RangersReport.

Also, it’s now official. Our first-round predictions contest winners are: 1. Mike S, 2. Michael Raffo, 3. Lyova. Congratulations, boys! Please email me your snail-mail addresses to

  1. WOO HOO! LGR’S…..

Moore and McDonagh on the points on the PP.. I’m beggin ya Torts!

  2. RangerSwegian on

How the Byfuglien can NBC schedule a game at the same time as the WC final? I have to choose between my country and my club. So the Rangers game it is! LGR!

  3. RangerSwegian on

Good point Carp, so if we can finish off the cheese in the first period everything will be fine

  4. SufferingSince79 on

I must be on a delay. REPOST: Had a thought…lets stop calling it a Power Play or Man Advantage and call it the “EM” (Extra Man). We’ll keep our expectations low and soon any connection to Power or Advantage will fade. Maybe it won’t seem so bad.

Still optimistic . Lets Go Rangers!

  5. Hagerstown Md Rangers fan on

I hate afternoon games. They have a tendency to really mass up the day. Rangers are going to win today. Why? Why not? They usually lose afternoon games so this time they will win one. Seems logical to me.

  6. SufferingSince79 on

Can’t be terrible on the Extra Man. All you have to do is have more guys on the ice than the other team. Problem solved.

  7. 6.4 % on the power play, abysmal. They should try five D instead of the five forwards they send out at times. It changes today! we creep up towards the 9.0% mark.

  8. Dear Lord. Anyone else think everyone is blowing Tort’s commments about Hagelin wayy out of proportion? I don’t think Hagelin is going to lose confidence or get his feelings hurt because Tortorella “called him out” in that press conference. If anything, it’ll inspire Hags to try that much harder. Those guys will run through a wall for Torts.

  9. On the PP- put out your 5 best offensive players and tell them to play hockey. Throw out whatever scheme they are trying to run. Get back to basics. Shoot the f’n puck

  10. Olga Folkyerself on

You’d think with an Extra Man the Rangers would play with more power.

  11. Agree completely, Jeremy.

he’s a jackwagon for saying it, but that’s his relationship with some of these guys, and he loves Hagelin.

  12. Exactly, Jeremy. Last time Tort called out Hagelin it worked pretty well. Expect Hagelin to be on 1st PP unit.

  13. Olga Folkyerself on

It doesn’t seem like a good idea to say your player stinks, unless it’s a misdirection and Hags is out there on the next PP.

The works “stinks” should be saved for Richards.

  14. Does anyone know the last time these two Original Six franchises met in the playoffs?

  15. Not saying I like what Torts did/does with his players but Pillsbury should be the last person to give out advice about how to run a team.

  16. Good afternoon all! Lordy I hate the No Brain Cabal….I listen to Kenny and Dave until ridiculously late puck drop.

  17. John Giannone says that the face off is officially at 3:20 PM.

    @jaygeemsg 1m
For those wondering, #NYR-BOS Game 2 officially faces off at 3:20p. There’s nothing going on that’s creating a delay. Teams ready to hit ice

  18. Pillsbury should stick to telling us how he built the Islanders into the eighth seed they are now.

    JBytes, I’ll google that.

  19. SufferingSince79 on

Geico using Caps in their commercials like Papa Johns using Payton Manning pre-Super Bowl. Oops.

  20. anybody else think it’s grossly disgraceful that NBC used the Boston Strong graphic during the Game 1 highlights?

  21. LOL JBytes, I’ve been wondering that myself…..I actually cited that mystery number when I was asked to work some OT this afternoon and had to claim Rangersitis :)

  22. Norm Merton on

Torts can do whatever he likes, like saying, what, six times, that Hagelin stinks on the PP, and make a big joke of the thing in the bargain. And I don’t doubt his relationship with Hagelin or that Hagelin’s play will suffer as a result. But he can only get away with that kind of idiocy for so long, and not all of his players will want to run through walls for him if he keeps doing it. I hope he keeps coaching well otherwise, as he demonstrably did against the Caps.

  23. SufferingSince79 on

“anybody else think it’s grossly disgraceful that NBC…fill in the blank.

  24. Marchard is another one of those guys that you hate to play against and just hate in general but would absolutely love on your own team…

  25. Win or lose Torts comments are indefensible. Winning thi same or series does not erase that.

  26. They are standing us up at the Blue line. We need to get the puck into the zone! More dump, chase, forecheck and cycle!!!

  27. I thought the Rangers played a pretty decent road playoff game in game 1. They were not really dominated for long periods and showed some semblance of offense and skating. It was definitely a blown opportunity as they could/should have stolen that game. As much as I hate these day games I think they can be a benefit to the road team as the crowd is usually not quite as boisterous. Also the players are not accustomed to playing at these afternoon start times so things like this could help the road team offset the home ice factor.

  28. After Boyle decided it would be a good idea to try to split those defensemen when he can’t handle the puck and can’t skate very well, why the HELL did he go to the bench instead of trying to get back in the play?

  29. I could have made money listening to this on radio so they better hartnelling get their act together!!!!

  30. RangerSwegian
Game on. Season on. Hire everyone back!

  31. “…as Barkowski and and Brassard are going at it”… as we show you something else.

  32. Doodie Machetto,3.5 on

Love our captain. Way to rebound from an absolutely dreadful game 1.

  33. Hamilton stopped skating on the Callaghan goal. We need to take advantage of the Bruin D

  34. Game Center Ice has Rangers radio feed on in case you want to avoid talking penis and co. on NBC.

The feed is few second behind but it can be easily fixed by pausing the dvr and syncing it with the live game.

  35. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

    Sorry, meant to readjust there.

Hopefully they start getting a little more possession.

    Ha, “stars” like Rick Nash.

  36. You would think that when the Rangers see 4 Bruins at the blue line they would DUMP THE PUCK IN

  37. They are standing them up at the blue line… Another pathetic power play..Bruins 2 shots on goal, Rangers none during the PP!

  38. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Funny, Torts could say the same thing about Richards (and pretty much every other player), yet he goes out there on every PP.

  39. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Too bad they don’t have Gaborik on the team anymore. I would say to put him on the ice play the PP as a 4 on 4 instead of a 5 on 4.

  40. SufferingSince79 on

It’s all a ploy. Hagelin will be on next PP. Boston will ignore him knowing he stinks. Hagelin scores. Torts a genius.

  41. Norm Merton on

Great — they’re playing the presser. Anyone still think it was OK? Among other things, he can’t play Hags now even if he wants to.

  42. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Yeah, but Pierre thinks every player is amazing, so nothing could ever be their fault.

  43. Kreider looked good on the PP. By that I mean, he understood that you have to get the puck BEHIND the wall of Bruins.

  44. Best pass on the PP was Richards hitting Kreider in full stride as he was crossing the blue line and his stick blows up. Would have been able to walk in.

  45. >>Callahan looking like a young Chris Drury on that one

Uh oooh! Does that mean we have an old Chris Drury in the making?

  46. Norm Merton on

If he said it about Richards, he’d be an even bigger idiot — at least folks don’t hate Hagelin yet. Contract’s too small.

  47. @ MANNY: SPOT ON! If they are standing you up at the blue line and you can’t get in; you must dump and chase…

  48. Also, on the PP… Nash is a HUGE body. Stand him right in front of Rask and screen the damn guy!

  49. Olga Folkyerself on

So if Hags stinks on the PP, and he doesn’t use Hags on the PP- why does the PP still stink?

  50. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

They should go with a “Statue of Liberty” play, since they’re all statues out there.

  51. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

If Hagelin stinks relative to what is already on the PP, then he must be just taking the puck and shooting on Lundqvist.

  52. Torts tried to sneak Nash out there vs. the fourth line. Kreider sprinted to the bench right off the draw … unless something happened with Kreider.

  53. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Instead of doubleshifting Nash, why not double shift a guy that might actually score a goal.

  54. that’s where Richards belongs, on the half wall, to where he drifted and then made a play. Not the point.

  55. pierre is just awful, it’s unbelievable he has a job… how many times are we going to hear ’19 in black’ today? he sounds ridiculous.

  56. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

    iCallahan, Stepan, and Hagelin might.

Nash’s playoff performance is unparalleled for a top player. I’ve never seen a guy who scored goals at a 30 goal pace go so long with NO goals in the playoffs. One goal? sure. But zero? This is pathetic.

  57. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Richards is not a centaur. Centaurs would be much better on our PP.

  58. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Oh thank god we have a Crosby update. I definitely wanted to know about Crosby while watching this Rangers-Bruins game.

  59. why don’t we just call the Rangers power play
    what it really is…
    a Bathroom Break?

  60. You guys remember when Gaborik was the difference between the Rangers and the Bruins early in this Bettman’d season…right??

Hat trick? Yup, I do remember it. I thought that was the beginning of something special with Gaby and Nash….boy was I wrong…

  61. Czechthemout!!! on

If Torts said that about Richards he would right to say it. How many total PP has Hags actually been on this year? 3-4? A stupid ignorant comment by Torts.

Fyi. At UMich, Hags was a key player on their PP. you cannot make a judgement on a player based on being on the ice for 4-5 chances all season.

  62. do you guys think pierre’s family even likes him? i bet no. i’m guessing he just lives between the benches giving out opinions even when no one’s around

  63. uh oh. powerplays for Rangers: 2. powerplays for Boston: 0
    conspiracy, ovechkin?

  64. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Carp, can you think of another goalscorer who went this cold in the playoffs?

Everyone got on Gaborik for slowing down so much in the playoffs (when it turns out he had a torn labrum), but at least he still managed to score a few, including the triple OT winner.

  65. I actually like Pierre … as a person, not as an analyst.

Hope we get Part II of the Crosby interview between the second and third.

  66. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Carp, maybe they can just give us a 2.5 hour Crosby interview and have the game play PiP in the corner. That would be ideal for me.

  67. Czechthemout!!! on

And not for nothing, Torts has no clue what a good PP is based on the last 4 seasons.

  68. Nice of Nash to shoot from far out instead of driving strong to the net and getting a better opportunity.

  69. McGuire might be a nice person Carp, but he could be the most annoying color commentator in the history of the sport. Thank goodness Doc “shaaaaaaatttttttt” Emerick is not doing the play by play.

  70. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Nicklas Backstrom went 0 for 9 with only 2 assists a couple of years ago, but he isn’t a goal scorer.

But the 2 assists to Nash’s 3 is worse, given Backstrom’s status as a playmaker (read: gets assists on Ovi’s goals when Ovi is playing well).

  71. I learned this is Norway….Pierre is a Pølsehodet…you can look it up :)

  72. Stranger Nation on

please no more Richards – being outplayed by Collie’s kid

    just brutal…

  73. Krug = Bourque? Inexcusable. Hit him till he doesn’t want to
    play any more.

  74. I think I saw Richards chasing his tail on that goal against.

Big Nash with the Big Answer! 2-2.

  75. Jon Paul G. on

    That was incredible. Nash!

Will Pierre Maguire just shut up? He is annoying and incompetent.

  76. Norm Merton on

Bruins must be killing themselves twice giving up the lead so quickly. Good stuff.

  77. i tell ya, this would be a tough series to lose, whatever ends up happening…

rask has looked very beatable if we could get enough chances, and chara absolutely cannot keep up with nash at all… it’s there for the taking

  78. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Lyova, I never questioned Nash’s efforts (except the couple of games where he was pretty rotten all around). But effort and $2.50 will get you a ride on the subway.

  79. It is refreshing to see Nasher socring and being a force in the o-zone. You guys are right…Chara can hardly keep up…

  80. OK, now we have seen the Bruins goals replayed about 400 times… ENOUGH! Someone, put Pierre out of MY Misery

  81. Norm Merton on

4 on 4 looks dangerous for once. Next Bruins penalty, designate a Ranger to immediately answer back, get on the 4 on 4 for as much of the 2 minutes possible.

  82. Doodie, You have given up so many times over the past four seasons plus on this board that it is impossible to read a word you write and take it seriously.

  83. haha that camera just took a mean right cross from rask! also how’d we not score on that??

  84. The Rangers are the better team. Soon it will show in this series. “Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.”

  85. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Thanks, Stemmer. You’re right. No fan goes through emotional swings. Just me. I’ll take that note.

  86. One thing to go through emotional swings. Another to tear your panties off and run for the exit.

  87. How does anyone get a Penalty there. And how, in the world, do the Rangers get one?

  88. Hags responding to Torts comments? He is having a great game. Wish he would have elevated that shorthanded shot.

  89. No idea how you’d check, Doodie, but it wouldn’t surprise me _that_ much if eight games without a goal for a top player wasn’t a massively rare occurrence. Gets magnified a lot more when it’s the first eight games.

  90. NYR should take advantage of long change if it’s to be four on four. Start with Stepan and Callahan out there so that Chara stays on the bench. Once NYR have possession in Bruins zone, throw Nash on.

  91. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Ok, it’s been about 10 minutes. Time for a Syndey Crosby interview.

  92. No, jpg. Mrs. Manny forced me to mute it to negate my screaming at the TV all the time.

  93. SufferingSince79 on

It’s a courageous official who call a penalty on a guy punching someone in front of the net and the guy getting getting punched.

  94. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

We have to change our defensive zone coverage. We’re getting killed by their D being involved in the offense.

  95. Jon Paul G. on

We keep getting the score even, and then giving them a lead. Lundqvist looking extra sharp today.

  96. Last series we were complaining about WSH defensemen having too much time at points. I’d take that over players being wide open anytime.

  97. another shot in the chest
    another shot in the chest
    another one goes
    another one goes
    another shot in the chest

  98. Girardi NEEDS to be paired with McDonagh or Staal. He’s too dumb to be paired with anyone else, for all his ability to make great plays.

  99. Gaborik had abdominal surgery. He’s not playing golf.

Can anyone on our team learn to bleed?

  100. Jon Paul G. on

We play well 5 on 5 and 4 on 4. Is it possible that we can succeed with a 5 on 4?

  101. Wow looked like his head was about to snap off. But of course Brassard is the diver

  102. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Carp, do ya think it might be nice to have one defenseman that can move the opposition out of the crease????

  103. RangerSwegian on

I’m happy I’ve got Mattias Nordström commenting on the Swedish feed. Only Pierre time is that stupid coach interviews

  104. If he calls Cally the “fearless leader” one more time, gonna throw my macbook thru my TV screen!

    PP looks better!

  105. just awful, Stepan and Hagelin not moving at all with the puck at the points and Callahan in the slot.

  106. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

defenseman closed his hand on the puck. Missed which one, but definitely did.

  107. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Trailer getting free shots every time for the Bruins.

And that replay shows it was Boychuk who closed his hand on the puck.

  108. Rob in Beantown on

I don’t usually get on the guy because he’s been the Rangers best player, but Lundqvist is getting outplayed by Rask this afternoon

  109. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

Man, Julien must be a TERRIBLE coach. For the players that are on this Bruins squad, they sure look like a pretty average squad.

  110. ThisYearsModel on

So far, our GAA for the first 2 games is 3. We have not won many games this season giving up 3.

  111. Stranger Nation on

yes, somehow we always make goalies look better than Henrik, unless he gets a shut out.

    What does that tell you?

  112. Norm Merton on

Richards easily the best Ranger on the PP so far, not good enough for this crowd, but good nevertheless.

  113. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

King, he needs a few more years and a few more individual accolades, but he definitely may end up that way.

  114. Yea apparently it is as Callahan got away with punching Hillen from the Caps in the head.

  115. 6 goals against hank so far in 2 games. not over yet either. boychuk campbell and krug. wheres our 4th liner richards to bang in a goal every now n then??

  116. Gravy, Just Gravy on

Listening on the radio…sounds like the Rangers are the better team, but the Bruins seem to score on every opportunity. Sounds like Rask having a great game?

  117. King With No Ring on

    The Stanley Cup-less King.

What’s a King without his chalice?

    Not much of one.

  118. Czechthemout!!! on

So far I have to say that Boston is a very beatable team. I have to say that Hank and the PP is the difference in this series so far. And not in a good way. Four out of the six goals Hank has given up have ben putrid! Very pedestrian effort by the so called best goalie in the world. Being out played by someone named Tuka Rask.

The Rangers were the better team last game and have been the better team this game.

  119. rask is saving the bruins right now. we are playing better than boston. we will tie it up no doubt, but what about ot? idk

  120. If NYR had even a lousy PP, they could be up 2-0 in this series … and could have beaten Washington in less than 7.

  121. Analyze away but the bottom line is we can’t score on the power play.

Why? Simple, too many passes waiting for the perfect shot and no big men who crowd the net with the ability to deflect the puck.

Callahan can not be the only player trying to do this.

And while Cally is playing like a big man al credit to Marchand who is doing a similar job for Boston.

In a playoff setting Zuccarello is a liability and his skill set plays better as a center.

The Rangers will think long and hard about signing him long term and should. “Pesky” only works when you have size to complement it!

  122. Onecupin73yearsandcounting on

    Too bad M cDonagh can’t finish…
B are beating up the rangers forwards and B’s defensemen have a free reign

  123. it’s a bit premature to describe Lundqvist that way, especially given the teams he’s had … and how many great players never win a Cup or a Super Bowl?

Do you think Lundqvist wins a Cup if he’s on Chicago or Pittsburgh?

Ludicrous to say stuff like that about him. And he’s still got a lot of prime left.

  124. Describing the Rangers as a better team today is as wrong as it was to describe Boston as head over heels better than the Rangers in Game 1. Even teams. Bruins have managed to score 1 more goal in both games so far.

  125. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Lets hope Girardi can score for the rangers in the 3rd….he’s scored 3 for the bruins so far…

  126. Doodie Machetto, 7.5 on

    Adjustments to make:

    1) Better coverage on the trailer
    2) Take away time and space from their defensemen in our defensive zone
    3) Carry the puck to the net, especially against their younger and smaller defensemen, like Krug and Hamilton. Don’t need to necessarily put it on goal from there. I’ve noticed that when the puck comes close to the goal the Bruins collapse hard to the net and it opens up a soft space near the hash marks. The Rangers have had a few good chances on those layoff passes. Keep that up.

  127. Norm Merton on

Boy are we spoiled by a great goaltender if we expect him to cover each and every soft defensive play, to see through every screen. He probably expects to, though.

  128. Reginald Dunlop on

Please please take 36 off of that line………….he is putrid…….put him with 19 and move 20 up…………wake up genius

  129. King With No Ring on

The next Dan Marino, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Karl Malone, John Stockton. All are choke artists when the pressure is on.

  130. Boston is playing with 3 rookies on D, imagine the Rangers in the same situation?

In any case who are the true scorers on the Rangers that other teams would fear?

Nash with room, Cally maybe a 25 goal guy in regular season?

Possibly Stepan and Hagelin , maybe 18-25 goals in regular season.

And those last three have no size!

  131. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Norm – how do you have time to blog and wear #19 while playing in the game?

  132. Three rookies as opposed to Moore, who’s practically a rookie, and Eminger, who’s worse than Redden, Comn.

  133. Stranger Nation on

Girardi with a great game – greatscreen on 2 goals and an assist on the other
Great game for Bruins that is

just figured it out…Girardi in front of Rask on our. PP!!

  134. LW3H, Nash on the Hawks or Bruins is a steady 40 goal guy as would Marino have been with a better cast.

These are team games, Gretzky couldn’t do it by himself but he played with a team of all stars!

  135. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carp – Girardi playing worse than Eminger today… MDZ not so bueno either….

  136. Here we go again another series down 2-0 and Torts saying “they are close” and the players saying how many positives to be taken from loss. Please spare me

  137. “The next Dan Marino, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Karl Malone, John Stockton.”

Marino, is BY FAR, the best golfer on that list…

  138. You guys are so stupid. We don’t even get past the first round without Hank. We probably don’t make the playoffs. He’s the best goalie in the world.

  139. so he’s a choker, King. do you watch the games, or just go to and get the stats afterward?

  140. Now the fair weather fans are ragging on the only true star of the team?

The only reason the rangers are where they are?

    Take a cold shower!

  141. Normally, with his back to a wall, Hank would never let 2 out of those 3 in.
MDZ is not just God awful, he is damn dreadful. Dull as a tree stump.
Cally tries to compensate bad last game with an enormous energy and is the best on the court so far.
With normal for Rangers amount of mistakes, team plays good, solid, mediocre hockey.

  142. King With No Ring on

How many magnificent saves will the King with no Ring be magnanimous enough to make now that the Rangers are down a goal in the final period?

    Answer: None.

    -King with no Ring.

  143. girardi having some game… and the reality of this game is that it seems like every chance the b’s have had has ended up in the back of the net

  144. If Tortorella blames the loss on Lundqvist I may just finally be done with the hypocrite.

  145. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Normally, I’d say in a situation like this to goon it up and send a message for the next game, but I think the Bruins would pummel us if we took that approach.

  146. I can name about 150 or 200 or 500 NFL teams that would rather have had Marino as their QB than whomever they had. And I guarantee you that Boston, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and others would trade their goalie right now, straight-up, for Lundqvist.

I don’t even know why I’m discussing such a nonsensical topic.

  147. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

I thought MDZ played Bergeron fine. Forced him into the corner. But man, Girardi. *WOOF*

  148. I agree that this is one of the worst games I’ve seen Girardi play, but this isn’t anything new. He makes terrible plays like that all the time, in number they probably equal the amount of great plays he makes. McDonagh is way better, and shelters Girardi from many of those opportunities for him to fail.

  149. Chances of scoring 5? SLIM.. Carp, it is clear you have some trolls with some of the ridiculous statements being made.

  150. Boston still doesn’t look like all that great of a hockey team…but we just aren’t good enough to beat them.

That’s my overriding feeling right now. We just don’t have the ability to beat this team.

And even if Boston wins this series, I can see them getting destroyed in four straight by the Pens.

Our players have brain farts and it ends up in our net. Their “inexperienced” defensemen are making us look like garbage.

Ah, well. Not over yet. But certainly a horrible feeling right now that we’re done

  151. Ye the amount of times theyve rubbed each other while saying Callahan’s name out loud must really be upsetting the Bruins fans.

  152. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Llatona, that is probably true, but McDonagh wouldn’t have been able to do anything about that last one. Yuck.

  153. Love Girardi, but this is one of the worst games I have ever seen him play.

  154. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

MZA learned his lesson and tracked that one hard on the backcheck.

  155. King With No Ring on

All four goals are the fault of Dan Girardi.

Lundqvist is in no way responsible for any of the goals. He is, after all, only the goalie.

  156. Never say never, Doodie. I didnt think he’d actually tell McDonagh that Staal being out is “none of his business.” And I didnt think he’d call Hagelin’s play “dumbness” or that he “stinks”. And certainly that he doesnt whine about calls when 3 days ago he was telling Oates that he lost because of whining.

  157. Doodie: I think any defenseman interested in staying with his man would have been able to do something.

  158. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Hagelin is the only forward that has shown anything of value this period, so make sure to keep him off the PP.

  159. Stranger Nation on

Enough of Zucc, he looks like a drunk elf on roller skates out there

  160. Rob in Beantown on

Serious question, has a hockey player ever carried a small razor blade on his equipment, a la the WWE, to bleed on command? I can’t believe nobody has done that

  161. Powerless play. Think 2 more pp goals last series and its a 5 or 6 game set. Special teams is what will do us in. So frustrating!

  162. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Maybe next time, Brassard could telegraph his shot a little more. Maybe do an interpretive dance to let them know he will shoot.

  163. King With No Ring on

When the game was tied, Rask made saves to keep his team tied.

35 shots on goal for the Rangers. The King has answered with 33 saves.

Some defenseman is responsible for the two goals scored upon King Rask. Not the goalie.

  164. *Staal Wart* on

can you imagine how much better this team would be if the PP had even a little power.

  165. That power play looked like they thought they were winning 6-2 with a minute left in the game

  166. Rob in Beantown on

Yes, I guess that’s the difference between a camera that intentionally obscures and one that does not

  167. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Boyle, oddly, has looked pretty good on the PP when given the opportunity. I’d put him on our #1 PP unit at this rate.

  168. Hate to sound like a jackwagon but we need a fight or an injury here (one of the ones Duguay says are OK).

  169. Stranger Nation on

Richards is on the ice and here comes the B’s scoring chances

    Beer Me!!

  170. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Save of the game there. Lousy coverage all around on that one. Moore on the wrong side, Stralman and Kreider not picking up the open man left by Moore’s vacancy.

  171. King With No Ring on

Larceny by Lundqvist, as he steals the hopes of Rangers fans yet again.

  172. I think Rask is very good, but if we’re placing entire team’s playoff records on goalies’ shoulders…anyone know who was in the Bruins’ net when they blew a 3-0 series lead and 3-0 lead in Game 7 in 2010? Might have been that goalie’s only other second round playoff appearance too.

  173. Pierre was right earlier. It’s not the players on the PP, it’s the schematic. It’s not working. As much as I like Torts, we’re not going to grind ourselves to a Stanley Cup. There needs to be a new system that can push the offensive play without totally abdicating the defensive aspect. If other teams can do it, so can the Rangers. They just don’t.

  174. they are using the same zone entry every rush and getting good shots off it every rush

  175. Doodie Machetto, 2.5 on

Nothing will get us back in the game like more Richards. Yup. That’s what will get us two goals.

  176. *Staal Wart* on

True Carp. 24mil and he won’t have to shy away from hits or more move his legs.

  177. You can’t beat this Bruins team down low easily…you have to get behind their d…

  178. *Staal Wart* on

The Rangers do not appear to be a dangerous team right now…
Hopefully they can bounce back at the Garden.

  179. I’m done with Girardi…always sliding around on his belly…for crying out loud!

  180. Offense (PP aside, obviously) has looked OK in this one. Worst game of the playoffs for defensive breakdowns though. And the dog in goal.

  181. Well, that leaves Tuesday as a Must Win. And I highly doubt we can pull it off.

Just look far too overmatched right now. Bruins can do whatever they want to us it seems.

    Ugh, so freakin depressing

  182. Reginald Dunlop on

boy. 4 is bad in every facet of the game…………5 just as bad today..
……19 should be bought out before game 3
Now going through motions …..showing a lot of heart…..hey room full of good guys…..part of the process……he will never change and this team will never overcome his stubborness

  183. Are we still blaming this game on Henrik? Or can we wake up and see the absolutely ATROCIOUS defensive coverage? Del Zaster and Girardi on the ice for every goal.

  184. Only thing in our favor, if you can call it that, is that the Bruins have been known to cough up leads in the playoffs.

    It’s our only hope.

If Hank was bummed about the OT loss, imagine how horrible he’s gonna be feeling today

  185. Yes, Girardi was sprawled out like a goon on the last goal, but MDZ wasn’t even in the zone yet after yet another poor pinch.

The two of them are now -4 and -3 respectively.

  186. Honestly, for two periods the offense/forecheck/tempo/physical play were all fine. Few defensive breakdowns, and an awful power play prevented that from translating into a lead.

Now it’s just all gone bad.

  187. Olga Folkyerself on

“Are we still blaming this game on Henrik?”

We? The only idiot doing that is King with no Ring.

  188. Norm Merton on

Nothing today says the Rangers can’t win the next two, but what a flop of a third period. Rask the difference today in the second.

  189. As Brad Richards contemplates which country clubs he will be playing in a couple of weeks counting his $24 mill …the Rangers are about to go down 0-2 in the EC semis…

  190. ThisYearsModel on

Well this was a total team effort. I sure did not expect this kind of performance.

  191. Stranger Nation on

Does McD get half of Girardi’s salary for carrying him around all season?

  192. Dan Girardi sliding on his belly in a -4 effort

Rask emerging as a true elite goalie, outplaying Hank

    Bruins win, 5-2.

  193. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Girardi and Del Zaster – #1 and #2 stars as determined by Boston Media.

  194. Ralph from N.M. on

Carp, you keep saying what a good coach Tort’s is . Boston is showing what a bad coach he really is.

  195. Czechthemout!!! on

Hank gave up two softies when the game mattered. He is not the reason they lost but he sure as hell was a major contributor to it.

Any review you write tonight on this game has to include the putrid play of Hank,Girardi,MDZ and of course the keystone cops PP. other wise it will lack credibility.

  196. Stranger Nation on

Time for Richards to chew a while on this. May be tough for him to swallow…

  197. Czechthemout!!! on

This loss was Hagelin’s fault. He stinks on the PP.

Always someone else’s fault. Never the coaching.

  198. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Krug and Girardi with somefind great skatework on that 2nd Boston goal.

  199. this is gonna be a FUN press conference with Torts
here’s hoping someone’s gonna ask him why he didn’t put Hags on the power play?

  200. SufferingSince79 on

There’s 3 hours I’ll never get back. Last time Lundqvist got super ticked he picked up his game big time. Bounces didn’t go their way. Not an excuse. Bad, bad game today all around. Same place we were vs. Caps. Also, Bruins were up 3-1 on Leafs and let them back in (and should have lost).

Ledge will be crowded. I’m standing a bit further back for now.

King with No Brain…you’re a dope. Go hit the Devils blogs. If you’re lucky you might get a Flyer fan trolling there this September.

  201. Hey, they played a stinker! But, I think they have the ability to come back and win 2 at MSG. Aint gonna be easy, but they can do it!!!

  202. Boston 2-0? Could be fools gold- Bruins were a turnover machine for first two periods- anytime we put pressure on their D- Rask played well and Ranger D unit (including Henrik- Marchands goal can NEVER go in along the ice) did not- Girardi picked a real bad time to play maybe the worst game I’ve ever seen for him- Bruins got a couple of good bounces. Maybe I’m being naively optimistic but… I thought Rangers were sharp today and see holes to exploit in Bruins. Change of venue?

  203. Evrock The Boat, Baby on

The Rangers couldn’t wait to get home so much they forgot to come out for the third period. Didn’t anyone reminds them their are still three periods in a hockey game?
Girardi looked like he was playing with that slingshot that they use to slide kids from one end of the rink to the other between periods. He sure loves to slide doesn’t he?

  204. Doodie Machetto, 0.0 on

ABlndy, I thought I saw some holes in the first two periods. But then the Rangers basically stopped playing.

  205. they’re not even worth getting on the ledge today.

it’s the Stanley Cup freekin’ playoffs!!
if that’s the best you can show
and act so sporadic in all 3 zones
    no Hockey Basics, etc.
i’m not gonna let my emotions
get taken over by such a pile of

  206. Tom Foolery on

They’ve had 2 bad periods – problem is it was an OT and a 3rd. The only good thing so far is Nash looks much better.

  207. Doodie Machetto, 0.0 on

OK, heads. I’ve got a busy couple of days at work ahead of me. See you once things cool down.

Hopefully, none of you will have actually jumped.

Remember, heads: It’s just a game.

  208. I think considering the team as it is now, getting to the second round is probably much more than we should have hoped for this season.

Maybe in the off-season they can make some changes toward a better team. Considering the last 4 periods + halfish period of OT, they definitely all appear to be eagerly awaiting next season anyway.

  209. Ehh, so we are down 2-0.

Game 1 was certainly winnable, and game 2 was as well inspite of not making the on-the-fly adjustment to their D-men jumping in the play.

One thing Boston did really well was collapse in front of Rask. Very similar to our style of PK / defensive zone coverage.
The powerplay did look better, but Dave Maloney is right – they need to pass it quicker and shoot. There is too much contemplating when someone gets the puck, which allows the PK to adjust. Pass it with authority and load it up.

I am strangely confident that we are going to win Game 3 at MSG.

I hope that cheers everyone up on a rainy lazy Sunday afternoon!

  210. Nash does look better. I thought we looked good for two periods.

Rough game for Girardi, he and MDZ played the puck instead of the man a little too much tonight and paid for it.

    This team really misses Staal.

The powerplay still sucks, and it’s not Hagelin’s fault, it is JOHN TORTORELLA’S FAULT!

Richards shouldn’t be on the ice, who’s fault is that? see above.

we are down 2-0. The coach isn’t doing everything possible to give this team a chance.

I really hope to be celebrating a win by the NYR on Tuesday.

  211. Onecupin73yearsandcounting on

    Nedamansky would fit right in

well if the NYR win the series then maybe we’re in for something special

  212. Ralph from N.M. on

I have always felt that Tort’s plays favorites . I’d bet that when Gabby was traded , that Richards wasn’t even thought about to be traded [ not that anyone would want him ] the Bruins stopped us at the blue line all game . dump & chase and they beat us to the puck all game . Tort’s had no stratigy [ spelled wrong ] . He may be a players coach , but he is certainly not a Hockey coach

  213. Jesse Spector ?@jessespector 37m
Tuukka Rask was asked about the electricity in the building, and replied that he thought the lighting was fine.

  214. Messier works for the team and leetch works for msg-any thought to having them work with the coaches on the pp? What bothers me most is torts’ arrogance, he can’t admit he can’t fix it so instead of acting like an adult he pees on hagelin on national television

  215. Jon Paul G. on

Tortorella and Lundqvist were overmatched and outclassed today by their counterparts.

This game was an example of why Tortorella does not open it up.

  216. tape the game, was out, didn’t see game but had a feeling they lost so I checked before watching the game. I’m glad I did so I wouldn’t waste my time watching the rangers get there butts kicked. I had rangers in 7 but this series is over, bye, bye rangers just like the knicks, even worse. The bottom line, when you have a owner like dolan nothing good will come out of it.

  217. Evrock The Boat, Baby on

Carp,I do not envy your job of reviewing this one. That’s gonna be one long, mostly negative bunch of bullet points.
Every time Lundqvist was screened and a puck got through to him also got through to the net. The Rangers defense needs to get Hank a clear line of site and part of that is not adding to the problem. It’s bad enough Lundqvist is already screened, no reason to add to that screen with your own body.
Rask played a great game, aside from being juked out of his boxers by Callahan. Somehow the pucks were finding him. He had a rather lucky game. Rangers put a lot of pucks right on him from up close.
Speaking of up close, is it too much to ask the rangers point men on the power play to move in a bit and then fire? They did their usual “we can’t leave the blueline by more than three feet” thing again. Too bad they do the exact opposite in their own zone. They still let the opposition have a free pass into their zone with absolutely no pressure whatsoever. That’s how goal #1 was scored. Overall the defense was terrible in this game. The only positive point was McDonagh joining the offense and finding himself on Rask’s doorstep a few times and almost putting one home.
Girardi…. He’s not exactly having a fantastic postseason, punctuated by his wonderful prowess at sliding around on the ice at the wrong time and wrong place actually almost directly at fault for two of the Bruins’ goals. Just putrid.
