It’s Go Time! … Game 2: Rangers at Capitals

Truth is, this isn’t an actual “Must Win.” Plenty of teams have come back from 0-2, especially if returning home 0-2, and certainly against better teams than Washington and better goalies than Braden Holtby.

That said, though, this is a mammoth game for the Rangers because they proved in Game 1 to themselves and everybody else that they are as good as Washington. But they can’t have the kind of self-inflicted wounds they suffered in Game 1. They they just can’t.  And with the Rangers’ inability to score and their woeful power play, 0-2 would be an enormous hole.

Game 2. caps
Rangers at Capitals.

Ya boys get some of their injured back as Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett (who makes his Rangers debut) join the lineup. Marc Staal (eye) and Ryane Clowe (probable concussion) remain out. John Moore is, at least to start, elevated to a pair with Anton Stralman … or is it that Steve Eminger is elevated to a pair with Michael Del Zotto? Whatever, new second and third pairs on defense for now.

Kris Newbury and Chris Kreider join Matt Gilroy, Roman Hamrlik and Micheal Haley on the prucha’d list.

Henrik Lundqvist in goal against Braden Holtby, of course.

Oh, and how ’bout those Knicks?! Fortunately this isn’t an MSG game today so we don’t have to be bombarded with that garbage ad nauseam.

Please remember to vote for the Three Rangers Stars and to follow me on Twitter: @RangersReport.

Also, we will have at least one live chat during the week, not sure if it will be on a game day or between games. I will let you know.

No way you sit asham regardless of who comes back

    May 4th, 2013 at 12:27 PM

  2. jpg's sister on

I thought that Kris Newbury played quite well the first game. I don’t think he should be prucha’d

  3. pyatt brassard dorsett
    powe boyle asham

this 3rd and 4th line has zero chance of scoring.

    nash its on you

  4. This game should be a lot nastier with Dorsett and Boyle! Can’t wait!

  5. no carp

the 3rd and 4th line never will score. my point is we have such limited chances of scoring other then nash and step and cally

  6. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Brassard over to dorsett crashing the net….the puck is loose….brassard scores!!!!!

  7. Czechthemout!!! on

Actually, Kreider just missed scoring twice. One went off of Holtby’s glove, the other went just wide.

  8. kredier and newbury out and boyle and dorsett in.

absolutely you cannot take out powe and pyatt, this is on the seniority system not the merit system.

boyle kills PP like powe but you need to keep powe in the lineup.

disgraceful.. Powe must be torts son or something… guy could not score if I was covering him…

  9. eric, it’s terrible…Beautiful spring day and we’re all bunkered down inside to watch hockey…

  10. Czechthemout!!! on

At least it looks like Moore is on the second d pair today. At least that’s good.

  11. kreider should be in the lineup over powe no question about it..

    torts is a schmuck….

  12. Aaron Portzline @Aportzline Former #CBJ Derek Dorsett making his #NYR debut today vs #Caps. Rangers fans are going to love this guy.

  13. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I hope Stralman is out and mcilrath is in, Stralman was terrible last game

    I’m kidding about mcilrath…sorta

  14. actually, oleo, they led the telecast with all-about-Crosby even though the Penguins lost to the Islanders.

  15. LOLOL Kreider over Powe…. you realize that Powe plays the PK and Kreider does not?

I think we finally found Stuart’s new whipping boy once Halpern left… POWE!

  16. I do not expect Rangers to be any better than they were in Game 1. Same team, same result!

  17. Czechthemout!!! on

Could be that Emminger is promoted. I prefer it my way though. At least where Moore is concerned. He was very good last game.

  18. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I think the best thing for Stuart would be if we traded kreider

Or maybe that would be what is best for the rest of us

  19. Eminger was promoted. He’s surprisingly physical, more so than a lot of our other defenseman not named Staal.

  20. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

  21. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Eminger played very physical on the back end last game, something we sorely lack back there if you haven’t noticed

  22. Czechthemout!!! on

We should trade Kreider for another fourth liner. We dont have enough of those already.

  23. nobody has any patience with this poor kid, and very few want to see all his hiccups in these games. He’s going to be terrific. It’s going to take a little while.

  24. Stranger Nation on

Would have put dorset in for Pie-hat, but I understand the rationale Torts is using – thought Kreider is playing much more physical

  25. We are looking better already!!!! 5 men on the ice! It’s a step in the right direction

  26. When Richards is your shooting threat, it’s really not much much of a threat…

  27. Dorsett and Erskine chopping each other. NBC’s three sets of eyes and dozens of cameras missed it.

  28. Norm Merton on

The Capitals can commit penalties afternoon now — nothing to fear but make-up calls in their favor.

  29. No, eric, Boston has/had a worse PP.. and they won. But yes they were the exception not the rule.

  30. Stranger Nation on

Mr Erskine allow me to introduce you to Dr. Dorset. More of a butcher, than a surgeon…

  31. Richard$ is back to being the complete and total waste on ice that he was for most of the season before going on that lucky streak.

Nash still looks like he’s on Xanax.

  32. “the Caps know exactly what we’re trying to do on the PP”

Really? I didn’t even know that NYR knew what they were trying to do..

  33. Tortorella likes Richards on the point on the PP

    Therefore…Tortorella is a moron

  34. Ah, so Chris Dury is where Callahan learnt how to break his stick on the penalty kill. I see!

  35. Kreider would have gotten to the loose puck up the right wing boards that Pyatt got beat to by a defenseman who had a horrible angle.

  36. so, is it possible that that one coaching decision, Richards on the PP Point is turning me around the i love torts corner coming close to the fire torts superspeedway?

    it might be.

  37. Czechthemout!!! on

Boy Pierre is an idiot. I guess he did not watch Cally at the WJC that he himself was a color analyst.

  38. Why do hockey players and coaches like to start their answers with “You know what…”?

  39. Dorsset is playing and I can’t see or even hear the freakin game..this day is shot

  40. Moore and Stralman can’t chase the puck like that, and shouldn’t be on the ice against Ovechkin.

  41. @ Draxen – Tortorella continuing to put Richards on the point is like constantly pouring gasoline on a fire and then being completely puzzled why the fire isn’t going out.

That buyout letter for Richard$ should already be drafted

  42. I’m still at a complete loss at how the entire New York Rangers team is completely unable or unwilling to shoot the puck off the pass. It’s like they have a religious aversion to the term “one-timer”

  43. so it’s been a half period… is everyone in love with dorsett and forgotten about prust yet?

  44. Brassard thinks Ovie is on his team. Mr. Ramsey, please check him for a concussion.

  45. I like the physical play, but our “star” players still aren’t showing much

  46. carp

u know what i mean miller kreider and anyone else. i dont even consider step moore kids because they are regulars

  47. can’t shoot one-timers if you’re not hockey-smart enough to find open space, and if nobody has the skill to get you the puck.

  48. Stranger Nation on

We are playing MUCH more physical – pound their D men and they will cough it up
4th line looks good – Boyle has found his place!

  49. Would it be in poor taste to offer Oates a contract in between periods to play center for Nash ?

    Then Richards can coach Washington

  50. Norm Merton on

Well, there’s the nastiness everyone here wanted. Hope it doesn’t put us down one.

  51. Unlucky of Dorsett’s stick to hit whoever the hell that was in the face. I had a feeling he’d end up in the box today though.

  52. Stranger Nation on

Dorset was hit from behind and barely grzes the guy with his stick and a penalty
He needs to get roughing penalties, not high sticking

  53. Is This Real? on

Don’t know if Dorsett was actually trying to hit the dude in the face but yes he has to be smarter

  54. YES!!!! Zucc going after Green! Making plays all over the offensive zone.

  55. Nash needs to throw a check once in a while. I mean, he is 6’4″, 230lbs.

  56. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

Craps players are real tough guys…three jumping on Zucc…real tough

    We are soft.

  57. Stranger Nation on

Papa – couldn’t agree more – should watch Zucc play – waiting for game ot come to him – he has to enforce his will upon this game.
Is he hurt? Does he not care? WTB?

  58. wow! if that’s the best that we can do then we must be

    so offensively challenged
that they’re making my coughing fits worse

  59. Czechthemout!!! on

So we had about 4-5 shouts in the first five or so minutes and than 2 in the last 15. Maybe it is time to move Brassard in for Richards? Just asking.

  60. Carp seems to be on Brassard especially since everybody’s wipping boy is back…..6’6″ softie fouth liner BB

  61. Nash’s lack of physical play is puzzling for a so called “power forward”. Initiate once in a while. Maybe he is hurt?

  62. Zucc doesn’t back down from anyone. I love the little guy’s battle level.

  63. I completely agree with Milbury here…wow, can’t believe I just said that…

  64. Nash was more physical before his mysterious injury [read: concussion] during the regular season.

  65. rick nash needs to score goals if not then yes milbury and all of us can call him out. for 7.8 mil you cant have go back to back games perhaps with this one without scoring

  66. Hell, Milbury is 1000% correct on Nash. With his size and skill he should be dictating the game. Instead he floats and waits and avoids contact like….well…Richard$.

Nash’s talk about how “This is why I’m excited to be here” prior to the playoffs hasn’t translated at all.

Maybe Messier can grab him ‘twixt the nethers and see if this big guy has any stones down there

  67. To paraphrase the Great Bruce Campbell:

“Rich Nash and Brad Richards haven’t done but two things so far in these playoffs. Jack and S%^t. And Jack left town”

  68. On the hit by Ovie on Hagelin at the left wing boards, Hagelin passed the puck, Ovie was at least 10 feet away before he continued on to deliver a very late hit.

  69. Stranger Nation on

AGain – he is playing with Richards and Zucc.
When they went on their post trade offensive run, they had Richards with less PP time and playing with Pie-hat and Zucc.
That changed the last two games of the season and the offense hasn’t been the same since…
So blame Nash, blame Richards or Blame Torts
how bout all three but start at the end and work your way back

  70. Ovie throws late hits like it’s his job, why not, if you can get away with nearly anything.

  71. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

Geez you don’t have to be a hockey expert (which Milbury is not) to see that Nash needs to pick it up…stop ridding Milbury’s jockstrap, kids

  72. Umm it’s been 4 periods for Rick Nash and he leads the team in shots… might want to hold these crucifixions for a bit. Where’s Stepan been the past 20 playoff games?

  73. Penguins, especially Malkin, were playing as if they were the Harlem Globetrotters and paid the price. I

  74. Stranger Nation on

If you look at Crosby’s two goals last night – he was hanging on weak side for rebound gifts, but he is not called out for not ‘being in the play’ and engaged but being smart???

  75. Dude, Latona……different rules for superstars in this league. It sucks, but it’s a fact of life in the NHL.

  76. Miami Pimp on

    Well, what can I say?

    A total bush-league, amateur-hour, Mickey-Mouse of a period.

    As expected.

  77. Stranger Nation on

Ovie throws late hits on players the size of Hags..on Dorset or Clowe sized players…not so much
Not only was the hit late, he also kept his leg out.

  78. Cross Check Charlie on

If the Rangers had somebody that could finish Nash would have 3 assists by now.

  79. Stranger Nation on

must shoot high on the scrub goalie… not at his logo MDZ and Step

  80. Stranger Nation, I was thinking about that last night. It seems that big-name players can get away with hanging around the net. If someone like Kreider does it, he’ll get benched.

  81. Norm Merton on

Survived a boring period. Time to put on some speed, keep the Caps D honest.

  82. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

We are getting to the point where we NEED to prove we can put a shot on this guy. We need a clean goal.

  83. ThisYearsModel on

Caps have figured out that, when the Rangers are skating, take a penalty and the momentum will change. Especially with Richards looking clueless at the point.

  84. Do you find yourself hoping we don’t get scored on or hoping we score?

  85. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

backstrom with the smart lift of Hags stick. Gets the puck every time.

  86. Norm Merton on

Time to execute this year’s go-to plan: have the other team’s goalie play like crap.

  87. Holtby can be as shaky as he wants to be. He knows the Rangers, if they take a shot, will shoot it right into him.

I like Dorsett! He spared us a PP!!

  88. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, wasn’t the reason we made ALL these changes because we couldn’t score?????

I have news for Ranger fans…..

  89. ive seen enough of dorsett to say he will lose us more games then win us games next year

  90. These idiots have nothing better to talk about than eliminating diving?

  91. Best way to stop unsportsmanlike play would be to stop the Crosby updates.

  92. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

“Professional players don’t fall like that”

REALLY, PIERRE?? You talking penis! How about your boyfriend Cindy?!

  93. Is This Real? on

This maybe irrational but I feel we are at a point that a Caps goals buries the NYR and a NYR goal only inspires the Capitals to play harder

  94. Rangers dont have the talent, and unlike last year, they dont have the heart. Not playing badly but the Caps scoring chances are much better and if Nash and Richards arent going to be contributing, Rangers are going nowhere. Still can’t score goals.

  95. LETS FACE IT WE ARE OFFENSIVELY CHALLENGED. holtby can be shaky all night we cant score

  96. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Dorsett has more snarl than any ranger on the ice right now – get off his case

  97. So, wasn’t the reason we made ALL these changes because we couldn’t score?????

No, Matty, it wasnt. But you can go ahead and blame Sather as always.

  98. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

is it me or is time of possession hugely in favor of Craps this period??

  99. Rangers are not physical enough. Why is Ribeiro allowed to dipsy-doodle at will?

  100. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

They cannot score because they aren’t winning any loose puck battles. Gabby’s forte for sure…winning scrum battles…. Not

  101. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Thanks for the commentary on my posts, Lyova. I’ll start critiquing yours.

  102. Norm Merton on

Powe straight from NYR shooting clinic. Shoot at the goalie’s chest — maybe it will go bounce right back off your helmet and go in.

  103. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

But if you do notice, punk, I clearly kept the GM out of that. It was you who drew him in.

  104. Yeah, I agree Bowman was a genius. But it helps when you have that kind of talent to make you look like a genius every time you send a player onto the ice.

  105. I mean I can also make stuff up out of the blue and then blame Sather for everything, I just dont.

  106. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Gotta say, Norm, it seems Holtby’s big enough that he covers a lot of net. He was post hanging. Not much room for Powe.

  107. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

I hate NBC broadcasting crew… And you kids complain about Sam and Joe!

  108. Is This Real? on

NYR find a way to win this game and go back to MSG 1-1 you gotta feel pretty good

  109. Norm Merton on

This is one of the worst playoff games I’ve ever watched. Bad offenses vs. bad defenses. Goaltending pretty good.

  110. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Rangers just get rid of the puck against NO pressure – how many times have they passed to a Cap player today under no duress?

  111. CARP!! CARP!! CARP!!!!

why the eff do they do that?!?!?!
talkin’ Hags i believe who just shoots the puck out
of the zone just now as if they’re on pk
basically gave puck away when he had
TONS of time to something else with it!!!!

    it’s driving me flippin’ CRAZY!!!!

  112. CCCP, you think Doc has taken his Devils jersey off from last ECF yet? “They poke away at it, still it’s loose, poked at by Kovalchuk, THEY SCORE! Henrique! It’s OVERRRRRRR”

  113. Has anyone seen Hagelin skate at full tilt since the Ovechkin hit? He seems to be doing quite a bit of gliding.

  114. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Seems like you do. I purposely didn’t include him in my comment. You extrapolated.

Perhaps it IS the players not producing? Perhaps we are just a bad luck franchise?

It was just a point. But, as we haven’t scored a real goal in 4.5 periods, I believe, becoming a valid one.

Certainly no need to jump on me. But I will be on your posts like glue.

  115. these type of games are what this lineup is in for next year for 82. this is what this trade was about with gabby.

as carp and i and some others have said we still will need more skill come 2014.

i didnt mind trading gabby but with/without him we need more off

  116. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

I don’t think this period anywhere close to even…I think Craps are outplaying us

  117. Washington is a lot quicker to loose pucks. The score won’t be nil-nil for much longer.

  118. You said “is it me or is most of the possession in favor of the Craps this period?” Look at the stats or rewind and youll see why youre wrong. Just because the latest 3 minute surge has been in the opposing teams favor doesnt mean thats whats going on all game.

And no one is jumping. Replying to a post.

  119. These big Caps forwards are just destroying Rangers’ D. Need the puck more just for that reason, never mind offense.

  120. Caps forechecking the Crap out of our D. I don’t know if we have hit the D in this period

  121. They do need more shots though. Would love for them to play like the Habs and shoot from every angle. Believe they neared 100 shots on Anderson in the first 2 games of that series.

  122. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Eric – basic fundamentals are needed more than skill. The rangers aren’t in the slot, cannot make passes on the move, receive passes, get loose pucks… The rink is lopsided so far.

  123. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

We do look slow…Hank is keeping us in

…lets get puck deep (if we can) and play with it behind the net!

  124. Stranger Nation on

Doc loves Stralman – uhmm – he is sucking it big time today – Doc has to remove his head from his assen
Our D looks like crap – pun flippin intended!

  125. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

agreed, Eddie. Our last two shots, from defensemen, wide angle, easy glove. No rebound.

  126. I think skill is definitely needed. They didn’t have enough last year, added Nash, and lost Gaborik and Richards, or at least who those two guys were last year.

  127. another shot from another horrible angle
to help holtby get votes for conn smythe

  128. Czechthemout!!! on

An absolutely pathetic period so far. Where is the fugging offense!!!

  129. Norm Merton on

Both teams playing not to lose, hoping for the other to make a mistake, for some “puck luck”. Lousy advertisement for the sport.

Hey, Girardi just made one. Woo.

  130. Slats never addressed size problem, other than Clowe,
after all these years of seeing big forwards on Eastern teams

  131. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

According to Lyova, this has been a good period. Even with respect to puck possession. With the exception, of course, of 3 minutes. Just ask him.

  132. Stranger Nation on

Caps checking line playing against Richards line
    Step playing against Who?
    Where are you Step?

  133. I’ve watched every playoff game so far and aside from the first Pens-Isles games this may be the least entertaining one.

  134. Czechthemout!!! on

They scratched a skillfull player and kept a pylon in the lineup instead.

  135. Michael J. Fox in net for the Caps and NYR can’t get any good shots. Pathetic.

  136. CARP!! CARP!! CARP!!!

since you didn’t respond to my last comment
    how about this one?

have you ever discussed with Torts or players
why they don’t head to the net and be ready for rebounds?

  137. Where did I say it’s been a good period? Been chilling with Hwirth much?

  138. you know things are offensively AWFULLER THAN AWFUL
if Powe and Dorsett have best chances

  139. Norm Merton on

Wow, Capitals just tried a hockey play! Passing, movement… That’s more like it. Maybe it will rub off!

  140. Is This Real? on

shoot the puck low, crash the net for rebounds. it’s simple. when you dont have high end skill you have to simplify

  141. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Carp, do you think it’s lack of skill, poor game plan, lack of size, speed, or great defense? Why can’t we generate anything?

  142. mostly it’s skill, and I’ve kinda been beating that drum for four years … and will continue to do so. But that is exaggerated when the top skill guys play like crap.

  143. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Well, Eddie, ask resident genious Lyova on that one. Apparently, that’s not the case. You must be wrong and saying something negative about Sather, too.

  144. all the complaining aside, can’t be completely unhappy being 0-0 entering the third.

    absolutely not.

  145. iCCCP - Who Gives A Puck?! on

No, can’t complain about the score being 0-0 (thanks Hank) but can complain about everything else. This team is not going anywhere far…that much is clear

  146. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Seems like they key on Nash, physically, and there’s no one else stepping up right now. And, of course, 2 4th lines doesn’t help.

  147. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Skill? How about passing to a team mate. How about receiving a puck off a pass. Show some patience. Rangers treat the puck like a red hot potato. Way too anxious to just get rid of it.

  148. Gregm-section403 on

Hank must feel like he is in a shooting gallery. He’s probably wondering when the rest of the rangers will show up to play.

  149. Stranger Nation on

Nash needs to stop drinking before games. That being said, he has made some nice passes with no finish from his team mates.

  150. you could live with 0-0 through 2 but the problem is we apply very little sustained pressure at all and the shots we have are very easy to steop

  151. faceoffs are 23-21 in Washington’s favor. Torts hasnt used Dorsett on a single draw yet. That’s supposed to be one of his strengths I believe.

  152. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

We should be able to get 1 goal. Hank needs to pitch a perfect game today.

  153. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Would Staal and Clowe make a difference? I believe so. Staal’s loss is a big one for us.

  154. Stranger Nation on

The Right side of the Defense is having a brutal game – Dan G, Stral, Em…

  155. Czechthemout!!! on

Will we ever see Torts make an adjustment in a game? Zero offense. ZERO!!!!

Every god damn play goes behind the goal with all three forwards there. They are so easy to defend. I bet Holtby is not even sweating.

The King keeping them in the game once again.

For a team that plays a defense first system, they sure have alot of major defensive breakdowns, don’t they?

  156. Hits are 35-34 in our favor. Blocked shots 13-6 in our favor. Both have 5 giveaways and they have 4 takeaways to our 2.

  157. Carp thnx for easing up on Brassard, actually a little better n Boyle was ok. Need a big Cally period one good one, second one not so much. NBC has said Ovie has done everything this game. What’s the score again? How about Hank has done everything?

  158. Considering the fact that Staal would be a top pair defenseman on most teams, yes it is probably safe to assume he is a big loss for us.

  159. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

There is almost an air of indifference out there. Clowe’ physical leadership is really missing. I hope he heals fully in a hurry.

  160. not unhappy being 0-0
it certainly doesn’t look as if
we’re going to score on holtby
at the pathetic approach to offense we’re using

caps are going to have to knock one in for us
    ala Steve Smith

  161. Norm Merton on

Here’s the problem with safety-first, brain-dead, get-the-puck-to-the-net hockey. You’re going to give up a 2 on 1 break anyway (see Girardi this period) but it wasn’t worth the trade — there wasn’t one. When you try to create something, you’ve at least traded a chance for a chance. This game has been a coach’s dream, a fan’s nightmare. By all means mix in the hope for puck luck, but does it have to be the ONLY thing you do?

  162. there were a couple things i threw
in there that i was hoping you’d address
    that i noticed during gametime

  163. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

This series, the Rangers have not been sharp or focused. Hank the exception.

  164. i get a lot of crap on here for being negative but how you feel optimistic about this team when u see how our style of play is and very little sustained pressure game to game

  165. would you guys, those that have watched other playoff games, rather be facing Holtby right now or Luongo? Because despite the 0-2 Canuck record Luongo has been magnificent.

  166. Carp
just about EVERY Ranger is playing like crap
    or at the very least
are not showing ANYWHERE NEAR the intensity
    that’s needed for the playoffs.
    been watching some other games
    in particular Sharks/Canucks
    and compared to that
we’re running on fumes while those teams have
the volume knob turned to 11

  167. NBC has rangers with 8 scoring chances. Ha. By scoring chance do they mean soft shots at the logo or flip ins caught in holtbys glove?

  168. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

If we had kreider in, it would be 10-0 rangers…

If we had gabby it would be 10-0 rangers…

Blah blah, because both kreider and gabby make those great first passes out of the zone and neither one of them would ever turn the puck over in the neutral zone

    Your 1:25 dead on IMHO!

  169. Czechthemout!!! on

Making adjustments is more than just changing lines by using the Renney line generator.

  170. what would you have him do between periods? Install a trap? a left-wing lock? completely change the system? get real.

  171. Czechthemout!!! on

It is better to do nothing. Keep playing behind the net with all three forwards and keep using Richards and Girardi on the points , thats the ticket.

  172. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

You go in front of the Crap net and you are going to pay for it. Our net? Not so much.

  173. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

We may have gotten away with one there, but they have gotten away with a high stick and a number of holds.

  174. yes, that’s what they are, Czech. You can’t change the system during an intermission. I don’t agree with all of it, but you also don’t just flip a switch and change it.

  175. we’re lucky the caps players have been really pass-happy today. there’s been a handful of plays they should’ve just shot and they elected to force passes instead.

  176. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Great hold of Steps stick behind the net. there. No call, of course.

  177. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Looks like we have a bit more urgency. Let’s get sustained pressure.

  178. It seems like the Cap game plan is to bully us after every whistle and over pass the puck when they have good scoring chances

  179. Norm Merton on

Where is it written you do not change systems in a game? Like these guys have only played one system in their careers? Only know one forecheck? One neutral-zone formation? How hidebound can you get?

  180. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Ya think, Carp? And which $6M player just plain stinks, then?

  181. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

By deductive reasoning, Torts should be realizing he needs to cut Richard’s time.

  182. if the rangers win i am going to otb and betting its my lucky day in the derby

  183. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

For all the non-Boyle fans, he just delivered 3 crushing hits. and was the first forward back on D.

  184. Pinching D can’t get caught in between, you either go or back out. In between is recipe for 2-1 the other way. Not sure if it was Moore or McD.

  185. yea hank really is focused today. if we could just get this guy some help. u know like a 40 goal scorer. wouldve helped today. ;)

  186. this is what you call ranger torture watching this. can somebody come through.

  187. If I’m Lundqvist, I’m counting the days left on my contract so I can go to a team worth a damn offensively in the playoffs. This kid’s wasting year after year playing what’ll probably be the best playoff hockey of his career on a team that can’t get him a single goal.. wretched.

  188. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Man, Hank has had a dozen or more excellent saves so far today. So far, this is redemption in a huge way. They win, it’s because of him willing it. So far.

  189. We actually came out of the corner with the puck a few times in the last 5 minutes

  190. Nice to see that Oates brought some of the Devils holding/interference with him to WSH.

  191. @KennyAlbert 1m

Still 0-0 w/5:56 left in 3rd. Last @NYRangers playoff game scoreless thru regulation: 4/13/33. NYR won Cup on Bill Cook OT goal vs. Leafs.

  192. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Ref’s have only called one stupid one on us today. I’m a little concerned they do something stupid here.

  193. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Hey Adam, please put Ward on the last minute of regulation!!!!

  194. Wow. That’s the Rick Nash that’s worth the big trade and the big money. And what the Rangers desperately need.

  195. Norm Merton on

Carp, it is not absurd to realize that good coaches can and will change in response to what they see in front of them, that they do not fear taking chances if they think something can work. Yes, innovations like the torpedo do not occur mid-game, but these are professional hockey players who have all played many systems and can execute what they are given. The definition of insanity — I know it’s a cliche — is to keep doing what you have been doing and expecting a different result. That said, I don’t think anything drastic is called for here. Just some more freedom to create.

  196. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

quite the backhand pass at the blue line by Richards and the non-keep in. GET HIM OFF THE ICE

  197. Bring back Prucha on

If Lundqvist played for the Islanders, there’s a good chance they win the cup this year.

  198. maybe you confuse what a system is, Norm. You change personnel, you change things you do within a system. You don’t rip it up and start over during an 18-minute break.

  199. Richards walks blue line to open up space in the circle for Nash to skate in and fire a shot, but decides to pass to Stralman and puck gets cleared. Idiot.

  200. carp

at this stage i dont want to hear about better pp

did it score with the game on the line no

  201. well, eric, I typed that early in the PP and it looked better. I can’t do anything about them scoring. Sorry.

  202. Czechthemout!!! on

It is not bias. It is a fact!

He continues to play the same point men despite the fact that it does not work.

    You seem oblivious to facts.

  203. its not a penalty because it was a deflection. thats the only thing i can think of, ohh but, it might just have a little to do with BUTTMAN wanting his 2 superstars meeting next round

  204. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Haven’t read through the comments, but they have played well this game. Hank has been there to make a couple of strong saves. They’ve created some chances. Good playoff road game, but have to take this one in OT.

  205. Sorry guys. I keep telling myself think positive. But I keep visualizing the Nash shot hit the post over and over again. I think that was our shot.

  206. Czech, I have said almost all season about how bad the PP is, and how Richards shouldn’t be on the point. What do you want me to do, kick him in the shins. That wasn’t the argument. And if you want to call names, you’re the oblivious one. And you prove it regularly.

  207. Are these fools gonna say anything about the non-call?

    Anyone listing to the radio?

  208. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Grabby, hate to even think that, but the calls have truly been one way the first two games. They missed that delay of game, multiple holds on Nash, Stepan, MULTIPLE, the high stick of Boyle…..It’s adding up just a bit.

Yes we could have had 2 called on us.

Last game was clearly advantage to Craps on the calls also.

  209. Leetchhalloffame on

1 NYR goal in 120 minutes of playoffs. Stanley Cup contender? PRETENDER.

  210. Papa, they pretty much did say they thought it was a bad non-call, and were quite surprised at it.

  211. Czechthemout!!! on

I want you to kick him in the nutz!

And what names did I call you?

  212. I know Nash has to fight through it, but he gets tackled and hooked every shift, and facewashed after every whistle.

  213. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

We certainly have helped Holtby by hitting posts and cross bars.

  214. Tom Foolery on

They’re better off 5 on 5 anyway. Whenever I see Richards at the point it makes me want to vomit.

  215. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, what does NBC do if this game goes 3 OT’s and could interfere with the Derby?

  216. League should be embarrassed at the product they put out on the ice today- maybe next year we’ll start playoff games at 11 a.m. Rangers played the last half of this game like they had a 2-0 lead and just didn’t want to make a mistake- a real yawn. I hope they know they don’t get a point for this.

  217. 5 on 3 game 1 noting late pp game 2 nothing

fair to say pp is reason we prob go down 0-2

  218. Admiral Akbar on

    I don’t understand how that wasn’t a penalty…

…but I’m surprised they called that “slash” on Nash.

2 crossbars, 1 goal post, numerous non penalty calls, strange unsportsmanlike conduct call, “unseen” but obvious goal = rangers down 1-0 in games with 1 goal in 6 periods of play.

    But it could be worse.

  219. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Well, we CAN do this. Just keep Richards away from anything important. Let everyone else play.

  220. that ref should be let go from doing any more
SC games. looking RIGHT at the play and is too
much of a wussy to actually call the penalty.

what you get when you act like a 4th rate league!

  221. on a positive note
    we got a POINT
    and we’ll hopefully do well
    in the skills competition!!!!

  222. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

3rd period was their best so far.

I just busted out my lucky sativa – game over series tied 1-1. Book it!!!

  223. That non call on such an obvious penalty is what keeps this league from getting any respect. Complete horse crap

  224. Rob in Beantown on

Do people really think the NHL wants the Caps in the playoffs over the most popular team in the largest media market in the U.S.?

  225. not to mention three lockouts, withholding the playoff schedule, the clown network coverage, ticket prices, etc., dc.

  226. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Carpy, BTW, I am man enough to say for whatever I said after last game about at least one soft goal, if not 2 by Hank, he has been excellent today. It’s the way he needs to play. Yes, it must be a TON of pressure on him and he held up BIG in regulation.

Redemption even if they lose. And kudos to Hank. Classy game today!!

  227. Czechthemout!!! on

Wow! Oblivious is an insult? A little thin skin there Carp? But I am sorry if it offended you.

Just one question. Does Torts pay you to be his publicist or do you do it for free?

I may over do it sometimes but my god, you never see a mistake when it comes to him. Amazing,

  228. Norm Merton on

Psst, Carp, I’m a coach — I know what a system is. I know what it is to throw out a game plan that is not working, how to present the other team with what it does not want to deal with. Even at the NHL level, where the defenses are so disciplined, coaches will find holes and try to exploit them, preferably but not always with plays they have drilled — remember the center-dot stretch and tip from the beginning of this season? What happened to that? Wouldn’t you like to see something new every so often? I know Oates doesn’t. Either that or the anarchic offensive play that ripped the Pens up two months back when the new guys didn’t know the system, such as it is. Brassard passing backwards through his legs, etc.

  229. CARP

i agree that you can’t change the system in 18 minutes
    between periods
the players could at least understand
that they shouldn’t just give the puck back
like they’re crapping their pants out of fear
when no one is around them and they have options
Richards’ goals last year were more in the sniping variety

  230. Cousin Tom. That was a non-call. It wasn’t missed. The Ref was standing right there. I bet the explanation is the puck deflected off his stick and he wasn’t in control of the puck. Ridiculous.

  231. Tom Foolery on

On the bright side we haven’t had to hear the Caps obnoxious goal siren and watch them celebrate like 5 year olds (yet)

  232. doesn’t need to be deliberate. that’s the reason for the rule. to take the intent out of the equation.

  233. Maybe because, unlike you, I assume he knows his team and his players better than I do, czech. Norm, that’s not what we were saying.

  234. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, if Torts keeps changing lines when they aren’t working, why doesn’t he change his PP unit, because it isn’t working???????

  235. They better score on this one, but I’m not so sure the Hockey Gods will agree.

  236. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Come on PP! Get one here and it erases the bad ones.

  237. Stranger Nation on

How is pie-hat in the line-up?
How is Richards on the PP?
How is Dan G on PP?
    Torts’ prevent offense strikes again

  238. Czechthemout!!! on

Based on the last four years, he certainly does not know his team very well when it comes to the PP.

  239. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

A long OT is exactly what the Craps want. MacD and Girardi logging huge minutes. They must be dead already.

  240. Duckbill platypus on

Girardi must be the life of pool parties with his high level of belly flopping acumen.

    Kind regards,
    Le Duckbill

  241. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Agree that Richards shouldn’t be on the point on the PP, but more so in OT.

  242. ThisYearsModel on

Washington is the more talented team….by a lot. They easily kill our PP and now we can’t get out of our end as they have all the momentum. What are we doing? Playing rope a dope? We don’t want to play in their end?

  243. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

We had the same difficulty clearing the zone in last year’s playoffs. You’d think some adjustments would have been made for that, too.

  244. Braunschweiger on

Brassard 9-5 on faceoffs, Richard 4-10, makes sense to have Richy Richy take the PP faceoff.

  245. McDonagh shouldn’t even have been out there … and now they have to kill a penalty without him.

  246. And the Hockey Gods do it to the Rangers again. Don’t know why McDonagh didn’t play it through the middle to the three open Rangers.

  247. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I know, Carp, the guys can’t be tired. We talked about this last year. But that was a tired mistake to me.

  248. Czechthemout!!! on

Yeah, he knows his fugging players. Pyatt, Boyle, and Richards on the same line! The slowest line in the history of hockey!

  249. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

That was all on Boyle who couldn’t handle a pass – he sucks

    4 AND OUT

  251. Norm Merton on

    Fair outcome.

Boy, is that last trade looking bad right now, but still a chance to turn it around.

  253. thats a pp

  254. mcdonagh with a horrible horrible penalty.

ranger PP as good as ever.

powe and pyatt huge today, playing great as usual.

again they do not need anymore offense. play powe on the first line.

    f in disgrace…

  255. Duckbill platypus on

At least the game won’t interfere with the Derby of Kentucky 3 hours of advance coverage. No?

  256. ThisYearsModel on

Well that is an appropriate outcome. A PP with 4:00 in regulation and in OT that we do not even threaten the goal, and the Caps win. They are the better team, and they skate and pass the puck instead of backing in 5 on 5 and playing like you are shorthanded.

  257. boxcareddiehospodar on

Remind me again why Richards played the PP and not strahlmann

why not play mcdonagh another 20 minutes.

oh and finally let’s play guys who has been injured the last few weeks!!

    you gotta love torts!!!

    this can’t end soon enough!!

  258. i dont want to hear any crap from any of you we will do this non sense were done. we have zero offense and zero pp.

this is a a flawed freaking team

  259. Tom Foolery on

Not even angry. This is the difference between a good team and a mediocre one. Impossible to win with an incompetent power play. Until if changes the team is going nowhere.

  260. boyle cannot receive a pas but that is not even debateable..

Richards on the point, guy shoots like me…

they have no 1 who can shoot the puck from the point, no 1…

mcdonagh delay of game inexcusable… totally..

  261. Norm Merton on

Nauseating interview with Holtby – How Do You Stay So Calm!? Against One Of The, uh, Better Teams? And Nash! Give him credit for not being honest and answering, “It’s easy staying calm when not much is happening in front of you.”

  262. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Hank played amazing today. We need him like that. Stay positive, Hank!!!

  263. boxcareddiehospodar on

    keep drinking the kool aid.

the PP stinks and our coach is clueless!

  264. Holtby was not even tested.

Team can’t pass or recieve passes. They make bad decisions and passes on every shift. They just hand the puck away. I don’t even know how they made it to the playoffs the way they are playing. The team literally just dumps the puck to nobody or the other team setting them up to attack again. This is pathetic and Torts looks disinterested.

We need to send Delzotto packing. He is a serious problem and liability on the ice. Some of these guys have no business being on proffessional ice.

  265. Amazing what can happen when your D man can hit the net.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard, “Del Zotto, shoots wide” I’d have my mortgage paid off.

  266. Sonny Boy just texted from DC……”Season Over”

Yea, the apple didn’t fall far from this tree.

  267. Rob in Beantown on

I only voted for one star, everybody else on this team should be watching from home

  268. Again, looking on the positive side — only 6 more periods of Tortorella as head coach.

  269. well i can’t watch MSG
cause i’m in the boonies near pittsburgh
where their players at least get pucks on net
    and look what happens
    they score more than
    ONE GOAL in 6 periods
    the islanders

  270. jpg, bright side is you don’t have to listen to Duguay, and you don’t have to hear the cliches in the lockerroom.

  271. again Carp

    the McD penalty is EXACTLY
    what i’ve been talking about
    and throughout the season
    and even last year

there is NO REASON why McD needed to chip it off the glass
to get it out of the zone when there was NO ONE
    around him.
    NO ONE!!!!
if he had succeeded, all he would have done was give it back to caps for the next wave of forechecking and Rangers not getting fresh legs on the ice.
it’s a STUPID STUPID play that the Rangers did ALL game long

  272. I think you’re wrong Carp. If there’s two people you can count on to have hockey smarts and make the right decisions for the Rangers, it’s Glen Sather and Jim Dolan.

They’ll definitely make the smart call and dump him after this year.

  273. Del Zotto had nothing to do with the play, but his play the whole day sucked as usual. The only upside he has is jumping in the play occationally, but he is way to much of a liability and has next to zero talent on breakout plays. Strallman is our best defensman now.

Hank is the only reason the Rangers were close. The absolute only reason. Richards looks terrible again. This is how the team is prepared for a playoff game. It’s pathetic.

  274. I thought McDonugh didn’t have to reverse with the puck, he could have skated it up the left wing. He had no legs.

  275. ThisYearsModel on

I am surprised that that Boyle-Pyatt-Richards line did not pull the game out. Let’s face it……..the losses to Florida and Buffalo late did tell a tale. We’re not that good. I hope Lundqvist is pissed. he deserves to be.

  276. Reginald Dunlop on

when are they going to be ready to FIRE this guy……….his system sucks, 3 guys below goal line, no shots, no rebounds, 3 on 2’s and 2 on 1’s going other way……never shoot the puck on the pp, yet he continues to put same crew out,he’s horrible……good move putting Nash with Richards and Zuccarello……dumb…put Nash with Brassard and Dorsett dummy …. FIRE HIM……….good move keeping a guy who plays 2/3’s of game out there for a 2 minute shift…………

  277. please Carp
    i’m begging ya!!!!
    ASK the coach or players
even if it’s OFF THE RECORD
    why why WHY
they essentially pass the puck to the opponent
even though they have other options and no one is around them.

it’s playing with fire and usually we get burned.
    makes no sense at all

  278. Better watch out and hope Hank isn’t too pissed… He can leave the team after next year. He wants a cup.

  279. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Watch a replay and count the number of passes that Boyle couldn’t handle. All that pressure and at 13:25 the rangers have a chance to take it deep – Boyle F’s up the pass – caps storm back in – mcD penalty – game over

  280. Za'rat "The OTHER GUYS Greed" Jones on

I am disappointed to say the least. I know what’s wrong. Torts needs to stop the excessive shot blocking. Guys go down like a Thai hooker on New Year’s Eve, and they skate around us like a pylon and shoot wide open!

Note to Torts: the guy who solved the shot blocking and ultimately buried us last year is the same Hartnell who is coaching the caps!

  281. Papa, I thought McDonagh should have passed it to one of three Rangers in the middle of the ice with no Caps nearby.

  282. Yea Nash with Richards is seriously a retarded move. Richards is bringing players down now. Why would you put your most skilled player with him. His decisions make next to no sense and the only thing saving him from the bottom of the standings is Hank.

  283. just wondering why you guys who are blaming Del Zotto and Boyle and Pyatt aren’t blaming Stepan, Callahan, Nash, Hagelin, Zuccarello, Brassard, etc. (and I know you all blame Richards, deservedly). You know, the guys who are supposed to score.

  284. can I chime in long enough to just say that I too have been watching Rangers hockey for a long, long, long time. That McD penalty is the worst penalty I have ever seen. Ever. If this game was 9 periods like baseball, we still wouldn’t score…the Caps scored our only goal for us. Our O is actually WORSE than last year. This has to be th eworst offense that any of us can remember…worse than the worst Jagr years

  285. Awesome, we lose on special teams play again.

How do you not even get a SHOT on the powerplay?

What a waste of a saturday afternoon.

  286. Norm Merton on

Torto will probably double down on safety-first at MSG, noting that his team has only given up 4 goals so far. Or maybe, just maybe, he will help create a different kind of goalie contest — Whoever Stops the Most Breaks Wins — rather than Whoever Misses the First Weird Deflection Loses.

  287. And yet – Nash’s post hit goes in and we are all talking about whatever (little) good stuff might have happened out there. That said: That PP … ten pounds of suck in a sandwich baggie. I’m sorry — that has GOT to be on the coach’s head. An absolute season-killer and STILL we see ‘Richie’ and now ‘Pysie’ out there, and ‘Dansie’ or whatever the F. Avery was right.

  288. If the Caps had Hank in goal, they would be the favorite to win the east. Better the Pittsburg and MAF.

  289. While I’d usually be eager to bet actual money on Glen Sather making smart hockey decisions, I think I’ll have to pass you up on your offer, Carp.

  290. Reginald Dunlop on

too bad Carpy……….because I and am sure you too could have coached that Tampa team to the cup……he managed to beat Jarome Iginla in 7 games, that’s all the Flames had up front, Iginla and his system with 3 bona fide stars took it to 7 games…….his judgment is terrible, completely overrated as a motivator….watch how many times players take shortcuts like just slapping puck instead of playing with purpose….

  291. its a collective effort of losers on this crap team we root for.

maybe getting swept will be a good thing for next year

  292. Carp
    i blame them ALL
only one who came to play was Hank

other than his little scrum Zuc has been just as absent
as the rest of the gliding team

  293. That was on Torts. Kept McBust out after he just was on for 2 minutes straight only so he can play on Ovi. Made a dumb mistake which is what happens when you get real tired) and it came back to bite them.

Caps deserved it. Without Henke, this game would’ve been over midway through the second.

And where is Franchise Savior Nash? Shows up for two plays all game.

  294. Za'rat "The OTHER GUYS Greed" Jones on

I take back that last post! How about we just get rid of that arrogant idiot! I wanna slap torts in his face now! Great plan! Way to prep the boys! Down 0-2 with absolutely no game plan?

FIRE THAT IDIOT! Send someone out and take out Ovechkins knees! I don’t care! Just find a way to win!

    We’re about to get swept!

  295. Czechthemout!!! on

Boyle Richards and Pyatt on a line in OT? Or anytime for that matter. Coaches decision.

Use the Boards use the boards, use the boards! Coach’s system and decision. It is ingrained in their heads to always use the god damn boards! Coaching.

All offense is started by dumping the puck behind the net and sending three forwards in. Result, zero offense created. ZERO SHOTS on goal in the third period!!! Coaching decisions.

No PP for four seasons now. Even worse, using the same point men and personnel expecting a different result. Insane!. Garbage like Pyatt on the PP? Coaching decision.

Just the facts! No bias. What say you ?

  296. I cannot figure out why McDonough, who seems to improve with each game, nevertheless reverts to bonehead plays in big games. Two years ago against Washington in the playoffs he tried clearing a pass around the boards, it was picked off and wound up in the net costing us the game and eventually the series. Again today. I know he was tired when he shot the puck into the stands, but come on. I think our wins down the stretch against non-playoff teams (except the Islanders) masked how deficient this team is a number of areas: power play continues to stink, we continue to have trouble getting our of our own end, and we cannot seem to put lengthy offensive attacks in the other team’s end.

  297. The PP is on Sully. He’s the one in charge of that pathetic mess, unless I’m mistaken. Bring a 3rd guy in. Enough of this BS. There has to be someone out there with a little creativity that can turn vomit into a milkshake!

  298. jpg's sister on

I usually try to be positive, but Really. When you pass the puck to the guys wearing red shirts and forget your teammates are wearing white shirts, the red shirts are going to have more chances. How many times did that happen this afternoon?

  299. Tom Foolery on

Orr – I’ve said several times that Torts should be forced to bring in a new power play coach or be fired.

  300. Skinny Guy on

Fat Guy- Worse than the Jagr years? Jagr set NYR season records in goals, points, power play goals, should I go on?

  301. i mean that’s a legit question to ask
will a full training camp and pre-season
lead to some tinkering with the system
    it’s killing of creativity works
when you have players who aren’t able to do much more than
    Board Hockey
not having actual breakout plays from your zone other than
chip puck out and hope you luck out and get to it first
    needs changed

  302. MagooPunch on

Both teams had PPs in OT. One scored, one barely registered a shot on goal.

Rangers PK, giving up their entire body and positioning to block shots. Easily overcommit, just use fake shots, turns into a 5 on 3. Look at everyone in front on lundqvist.

Rangers 3 men up high. No one in front. Blocked shots, wide and 200 ft down the ice.

Why stand around during pp? Why abandon work ethic for a couple of free shots on goal?

  303. Reginald Dunlop on

It’s over………..didn’t the genius coach say that if they didn’t win this one, it’s over?????? dumb dumb dumb….you have to have the respect and a care level from the players towards their coach……..did you see how the Caps players listened to Oates on the bench??? big difference from the Rangers bench……

  304. Za'rat "The OTHER GUYS Greed" Jones on

That’s not fair to say. I felt it made sense. That was harsh

  305. I’m not defending the coach in all of this, Czech, I just am not. I think he deserves a lot of the blame … and mostly for the power play the for his faith in Richards.

I’m just telling you, he’s not going to change the system at this stage, especially after it got them into the playoffs and what it accomplished last season. He’s not.

But mostly, I’m telling you what I know. He’s not being fired. And I tell you that with this caveat. My job would be much easier and more pleasant if he was gone and a Tom Renney type guy was hired. But it’s not happening.

  306. papa bear

    del zaster looked good tonight.

are you stupid or just say dumb things. was he not part of the most horrific pp in hockey.

    wake the hell up dude

  307. IF IF IF IF…we’re small…we’re soft…we have no PP…deja vu all over again and again and again. We knew the Caps would get a PP, did not know we would hand it to them on a platter….but still, once our pathetic PP was done we knew it was a matter of time. Monday night, lets see who wants to be on the team next year.

  308. I don’t even give an F anymore…watching this dookie is like opening your lunchbox and seeing that your favorite sloppy joes sandwich soaked its way all the way through your bread

How we could not pot one of those good chances in period 1 is just mid boggling…we literally have not one finisher…but we have a lot of enders

  309. and I, unlike many here, have said the Gaborik trade was all the coach’s fault, and how much I dislike that deal.

  310. I think the truth is McDonough isn’t a first pair Dman. problem is msg loves to overate the Ranger players. So everyone thought he was the best, but he’s average and doesn’t have much skill.

You can also talk about hypotheticals all you want. There are glaring issues with management and some of the players chosen to play and this whole system.

Yea and blocking shots is situational but the Rangers take themselves out of the play constantly when attempting to block. Teams have figured that out about the Rangers and Torts doesn’t now anything but sacrifice you body and depend on your goalie.

  311. Reginald Dunlop on

I know you’re not arguing Carpy, I just fail to see the love affair with this guy…….well I guess I can understand the stupidity of lil jimmy

  312. jpg's sister on

oh and how many times did they not go to the net and Not screen Holtby. That is how Washington scored A screen. Did not create any of those against Holtby

  313. Thank god for mint Julips…….uggggggh…
I get to go to a derby party now with isles and bruins fans. I smell discomfort.

I know it is simple but gotta be better in the o-zone in better positions to shoot and ESP better on o-zone faceoffs. if they are taking the walls away and behind the net, need to make adjustmentsand for the love of god more freaking pucks ON net.

  314. ThisYearsModel on

CARP–Hard to fault Cally…..he left it all out there today. Not hard to fault Richards, Nash, McDonagh, Del Zotto, Stepan, and others and surely not hard to fault the idiot coach who changes lines every 5 minutes, but can’t stomach changing up the PP when it is not working. Look, the PP has been brutal all season. Why would it be a surprise that it isn’t working now? Remember, the coaches don’t coach offense.

  315. Skinny Guy – BY the end of the Jagr era, our offense sucked…all Jagr all outside all a waste

  316. So now McDonagh’s not a first-pair D-man. Somebody opened up the crap faucet, apparently.

Or maybe it’s just angry fans being angry fans. Maybe I should cut out.

  317. Eric @ 3:58

*Eriic, go cry in your pancakes you whinny little girl*

grow the ef up, you sorry little jack off

And learn something about hockey too.

  318. Balcony Bob on

The sole reason the Rangers are 0-2 is the lack of a power play, as we all know. Their power play is just horrid, abysmal, atrocious, amateurish, etc., etc., ad nauseum. (add your favorite negative adjectives here). It’s been this way for far, far too long. This alone is sufficient reason to fire the entire coaching staff, because they are unable to fix it.

They are experts at passing the puck around the perimeter, (in the rare instances when they are able to keep the puck in the offensive zone), but there is never, never anyone in front of the net screening the goalie. This is why they make journeyman goalies look like Vezina Candidates.

    It’s just sickening!

How long before NFL training camps open?

  319. Carp may have to put the blog in lockdown for 30 minutes until every cools off…get the taser out, mi jefe

  320. Two posts. Some missed calls. Not getting enough pucks to the net. Give Caps defense and Holtby some credit. Need a big welcome home from MSG fans. Keep the faith!

  321. McD is 1st pair
but i HATED what he did there
when he, like other Rangers during the game,
    had time and other options

  322. So this organization is going to go down the tubes because they won’t fire Torts? People need to get over him. he’s just all bark no bite. Don’t be scared to call him out. Nobody likes him especially non Ranger fans. He’s a stubborn idiot if you ask me. Ruins guys Ranger careers out of personal reasons.

Why oh why does this organization love to sign soft players. They do nothing in the playoffs. Even the big guys we have are soft. Excluding Clowe.

  323. Reginald Dunlop on

just heard, for game 3, the NHL has decided to play a small area game below the goal line with the net facing the backboards…….might actually have a shot, but then again the genius might adapt his system to be run and gun for that one……

  324. I’m not giving any opposing defense any credit based on a game against us

  325. the caps are not that good. rangers cannot score.

pp is horrible but the caps had 1 more point then the rangers and played in the worse division in hockey by far.

    powe out kreider in.

    pyatt out and clowe in

emminger out and staaal in… not complicated.

Richards off the point on the PP…not real complicated

  326. Brad Richards is a thief. he should pay everyons’e admission on Monday night.

  327. ThisYearsModel on

McDonagh is a terrific player that is just approaching his prime. he made a mistake. the game should never have gone that far. And remember…..our coach ran the OT specialist we did have out the door at the deadline. he thinks his team is better now. I like Brassard and Moore a lot……but if Brassard is going to get 12:00 playing with stiffs so that Richards can get his 20 minutes of futility……we will be done quickly. Holtby could have been in a lounge chair for most of the afternoon.

  328. or you can take out asham for clowe and keep pyatt in.

    play your best players…

  329. For everyone hammering the Rangers powerplay, don’t forget that Boston’s powerplay during their Cup run two years ago was clicking at a historically futile 11.4 percent (25 games total).

  330. having leetch and Dugie together on the air is like watching Jim Leyland being interviewed along side the guy who lost the little league WS

  331. sorry
    not giving holtby
all that much credit when shots
are consistently coming from bad angles
    (or good angles for him)
    shot into his chest

out of all our shots that actually HIT the net
i would say chances would barely reach a handful

  332. We Will, We Will Evrock You! on

Is it just me or do Ranger fans seem to hear the word “pathetic” a lot? We definitely understand the meaning of it better than most people.

  333. Czechthemout!!! on

Not casting blame at all. Just frustrated and angry because I truly believe we have good players and should easily beat this Craps team. I think he is hurting this team and wasting a truly great goalie. It is just frustrating when you defend him sometimes.

Just venting. You do a great job here.

  334. Cory but they had an amazing goalie and defense. The kings had a bad powerplay too, but those teams scored even strength. The Rangers don’t score and barely get chances. So the PP becomes more important.

  335. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Team effort – team collapse – too much blame to go around. Hank deserves better.

  336. Carp, I’m only responding, not initiating.

Eric apparently has his panties all bunched up and decided to take a swing at PB. He can disagree, thats fine, but can he keep it respectful?

  337. who cares about the missed pemalty call..we wouldn’t have scored anyway

  338. Torts’ trust in Richards is one of the few things that I can’t stand aboot him. I’m so sick of seeing this guy in important situations. Bucky O’Hare is done. He’s a borderline 3rd liner, so stick him on the fuggin 3rd line where he belongs. Put him on the 2nd PP unit, and just wait out that miserable goddamn contract, or buy the fugger out.

  339. Reginald Dunlop on

“Because if we don’t win, we’re done,” Tortorella said…………. nice…….

  340. rangers are better 5 on 5 then the caps. the stats for the season show it.

again remove powe, and ahsham or pyatt from the lineup

add clowe. on d add staal play him 3rd line and remove emminger…

this team has talent a lot of it…their Pp is a joke.. part is the players part is the makeup of the group…

  341. Duaguay looks like a transvestite who rushed to wipe off his makeup before the camera turned to him

  342. Henrik has to go…what good is a high priced goalie if no money is left to get someone to score him one?

  343. We Will, We Will Evrock You! on

Cory, that Boston team also had the best 5 on 5 goals for/goals against ratio in the league by a mile. I don’t think the problems with the power play are the only problems for this team.

  344. players move I disagree with torts on is Powe. he stinks and is not needed. pyatt love also.

the makeup of the PP, play D men on the point, Richards has a popgun shot….

  345. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I don’t hate torts at all and as I’ve said before, he is my second favorite ranger coach in the past 20 years but there a 3 things I don’t understand that he does

    Richards on the point

Richards plays well on the third line and with third line match ups, so why isn’t he there

Why the hell have our d men never ever under torts tried to separate the man from the puck? I mean the caps d men are instantly in ranger forwards face at the circles and more often than not the rangers never even get a shot let alone a quality one. If he is encouraging this stupid penguin routine, he needs to stop. If he isn’t encouraging it, he needs to show the d tapes of the caps d men and instill separating the man from the puck instead of sliding on the ice and backing up until they are in hank’s grill.

  346. a harsh group today. I too wish I had gone food shopping today, butI took my chances…..

  347. First game I’ve seen in this years playoffs where the better goaltending didn’t win. We shoot at Holtby like we were shooting on Hank. Hard to take anything positive out of these two games- except Caps aren’t very good-either.

  348. Czechthemout!!! on

At this point, 11.4% PP would be a god send! We are at zero over 2 games! The notion that you dont need a good powerplay is just foolish.

Plus Boston got away with it because they have an offense,we dont.

  349. It’s kind of silly to be upset at this point. Considering they got objectively worse in terms of on-ice talent since last year, while maintaining the same poor coaching staff, a sixth place finish is pretty good for this team and probably better than they deserve.

Hank played out of his mind last year and hauled a very mediocre team to the ECF. Now he’s just playing at super-hero level and the team is back where they belong… losing to the Captials in the first round.

You can’t get blood from a stone.

  350. Ryan Callahan is going to be using two canes when he gets his jersey retired at MSG in 10 years

  351. Pretty sure we could have scored zero goals with dubie, artie, gabby, prust, and feds. And probably would have been more exciting.

  352. too bad Torts didn’t decide to go to that charity dog walk in Yorktown today

  353. even our muchnkin teams had more scoring and chances against the DYNSATY Isles

  354. Reginald Dunlop on

where’s Larry Brooks???? man has he gotten soft lately, used to like it a lot more when he held the genius accountable, now the genius just Bullies media………

  355. I agree. Our PP is hard to watch, but I have a feeling we will score a handful of goals back at the Garden. What did that stat say about playing in D.C. — nine goals in the last nine playoff games? (haha make that 10 I guess!) I think Brassard deserves a look in Richards’ spot alongside Nash, though line juggling won’t change the fact that we’ve been playing a lot perimeter and behind the net hockey. Clowe hopefully is feeling better and can help the powerplay get the puck settled and moving.

  356. The Rangers had not been shut out with Boyle out of the lineup.

Today, shut out in 3.4 periods.

    Aha, aha.

  357. Reginald Dunlop on

even our muchnkin teams had more scoring and chances against the DYNSATY Isles

real coach with a real system………..remember???

  358. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    Fat guy
Different game back then, what most people don’t understand (including bettman) is clutching and grabbing actually leads to more offence

  359. Lmao, even Deugay does a obvious facepalm regarding Torts then corrects himself politically.

    I don’
