It’s Go Time! … Panthers at Rangers

Not much needs to be said. This is a fairly critical game against a very bad team, much worse than the team that beat the Rangers Tuesday. Of course, if you don’t or can’t score goals, every team is pretty dangerous, right?

So let’s say the Rangers need to go 4-2 in their last six (pretty random, but maybe conservative) … if they lose tonight, that becomes 4-1. Don’t think they want to put themselves into that kind of position.

Game 43.
Panthers at Rangers.

Ya boys have lost one in a row, after going 5-1-1 in their previous seven, though some of those were hideous.

Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal vs. Scott Clemmenson.

Chris Kreider replaces Brian Boyle (right knee), who will not play tonight or the next two, minimally. Marc Staal (eye) and Derek Dorsett (clavicle) remain out.

Matt Gilroy and Roman Hamrlik are prucha’d.

Other games that matter tonight: Islanders at Toronto, Washington at Ottawa, Devils at Philadelphia, Carolina at Winnipeg.

I also am under the assumption that Kreider wont be on the fourth line very long. But you never know. Surely the notion that a slow skating, totally non producing player over the last 34 games is not a better option on the third line than Kreider, right?

  2. Good evening all! LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!!

iPad out of juice so no me til intermission or a better charge…..

  3. Paul in sunrise on

Biron is the first star. Pyatt over Kreider? Just let em play. Let’s go rangers.

  4. Gift of GAB-orik-ohio-o-Clowe on

That Boston pre game anthem was incredible. Very moving to watch.

  5. I’m sure someone’s down this before, but has anyone referred to Pyatt as Taylor Not Swift?

  6. If Steven McDonald doesn’t motivate you when he personally addresses you, I don’t think there’s ANYTHING Torts can do to motivate these clowns.

  7. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

    Amen Latona.
If I were playing tonight, my first shift I would try to check someone into Penn Station!

  8. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Mama I’m with you. That guy gets me everytime. Especially tonight

  9. Stepan would have been a good choice, but don’t think you can ever question Callahan.

  10. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Gotta take care of business at MSG, but would be nice to get some help tonight. Preferably from the Canes.

  11. Stil think that PP is more of a 1-1-3 but man I love that setup with Stepan facing backwards.

  12. Rob in Beantown on

Assuming GameCenter is correct and Hank got the assist. It’s been wrong before

  13. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

GameCenter almost always shows a goalie assist on the play by play at first.

  14. Tonight I am just just a boneheaded Rangers fan, but hoping for a super Hurricane in Winnipeg!!!

  15. Rob in Beantown on

My bad, GameCenter changed the assist obviously. Not by a TV as you might have guessed.

  16. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Topo Gigio was the lead character of a children’s puppet show on Italian and Spanish television in the early 1960s. The character, created by artist Maria Perego, debuted on Italian television in 1959 and has been customarily voiced by actor Giuseppe “Peppino” Mazzullo and later Davide Garbolino. The Italian nickname “Gigi” is a derivative of Luigi (“Louis”),[1] so Topo Gigio could be translated as Louie Mouse.

  17. Clowe is an icing machine.

Let’s hope the Panthers take more Penalties because the Rangers look pretty sloppy at even strength.

  18. I will root for a Rangers PP anytime I see a PK that features two Defenseman positioned behind the net thus created a 2-on-5.

  19. Cripes all, thanks, but I who Topo Gigio is…..don’t know what the reference means in terms of team…..

  20. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Kreider says NHL benches are more comfortable than AHL benches. He’s got a bench in his backyard he calls his Torts Tushy seat.

  21. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Clowe has won more face offs this game than Richards has all season. No. SERIOUSLY.

  22. that pretty play by Brassard is exactly the kind of play that lets teams back in games, when it seems too easy.

  23. For a team that’s system is based on defense…….pretty bad in their own zone.

  24. Manny, why you dis mama….I never ignore you…maybe I just missed it??? Lots of stuff going on….

  25. rangers are making the panthers look like a top seed in the east. Rangers look slow compared to the panthers, mean while the islanders skated circles around the panther the other day.

  26. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I know it’s a split second decision, but Hank has to go get that.

  27. Rangers getting destroyed in the Neutral Zone. Florida is unchallenged in the Neutral zone.

  28. I’ll say it again. Rangers failing to challenge Florida puck carrier in the neutral Zone. Defense conceding the blue line

  29. islanders are going to be a tough out in the playoffs, I don’t care who they play. The rangers, well, if they make the playoffs, they will be an easy out.

  30. I would give Clowe 2 yrs max, he won’t get any faster. He won’t sign for 2 though

  31. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Shots are 17-3 isles in that game. THAT is how you play determined, even after being down 2 on 2 shots

  32. Gravy, hard to tell with the avatars so small, but even enlarged on iPad…it just seems, not right…:) Gravy baby indeed….

  33. clowe was not worth the picks sather gave up for him. There was a reason why the sharks looked to move him. Think about it, why would the sharks, playoff contenders want to move clowe, sather blew that one.

  34. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

It is hard to see, it’s a spoonful that’s dripping back into a gravy bowl.

  35. Czechthemout!!! on

The value of a good power play! Outplayed for a god chunk of the period and because the power play worked for a change, we still have the lead. The Panthers showed the text book way to play against us. Put a lot of pressure on the dmen by sending two men in deep and cover the boards with the the other three players. Creates turnovers in their zone. Easy.

  36. Ahhhh! Now I see it!! Excellent!!!!!!

Pardon me, but it looked a little funky to me :) Bad me.

  37. Based on what we’ve seen so far, I think Clowe is allowed to walk. He’s not going to settle for two years, or reasonable money. And the conditional pick is lower if he doesn’t sign here. They’ve already given up too much for him. Too bad, because if he was who he’s supposed to be, he’d be a big help to this team.

  38. Hagelin should score the name of Topo’s tailor and get himself a little sweater. The one he wears must have belonged to John Scott.

  39. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Understandable, Mama. It just looked to me (when larger) like something that would tempt Marty to sit down and drink.

  40. caught up on dvr to real time. had to put 2 yr old to sleep.

there 5 on 5 play needs lots of work tonight. too many quality scoring chances.

pp is a plus for once.

brassard needs to shoot on the 2 on 1 that 30 sec later cut it to 2-1

  41. If Brassard shot and didn’t score, and the Panthers went back down and tied it, would we be saying he should have passed?

I have more of an issue with Zucc’s half-aasened poke check.

  42. Clowe will have some big moments before we are done, which scares me. 2 yrs or nothing. He will say thnx but no thnx

  43. Czechthemout!!! on

I think Clowe needs to drop about 10 pounds or so. He kind of looks over weight to me.

That said, I agree Carp. Let him walk unless he takes a 2 year 6 million dollar deal.

  44. This game is not like a pro fight, but rather like the amateur Silver Gloves where 1 guy takes a big lead, then has no strategy and lets the other guy back in.

  45. NYR make way too many blind passes for a team that can barely complete sighted passes.

  46. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I’ve agreed that Kreider needs to earn his time, but he should be given a chance over Pyatt.

  47. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Remember those first two PPs when they shot the puck and scored?

  48. I take back the comment the other day about maybe tortorella has worn out his welcome with this team. There isn’t a coach in the league that could do much better with this group of rangers. This team is slow, soft and not very talented.

  49. I’m not Hockey Expert and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but, that was awful. Two times in a row.

  50. Czechthemout!!! on

The simply pathetic Brad Richards continues to get power play time despite being a detriment to it. It looks like either the Panthers coach adjusted how they kill the pp or we went back to our stupidity on the PP.

  51. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Well, the PP is never going to operate at 100% efficiency. 50% is still pretty good.

  52. … and that last PP they actually moved their feet and moved the puck, but never got it to an open man … of course, as the crowd was screaming “shoot” for the entire two minutes.

  53. HockeymanRangers on

Something really stinks in NY Ranger land?????? I don’t like to sit on here and complain but those 2 power plays stunk up the entire NYC.

  54. NYR power plays feel like they last thirty seconds. Power plays for every other team in the league feel like they last five minutes.

  55. Who cares if somehow this team finds a way to make the playoffs, they are a one and done team. Dolan is the only guy who hopes they make the playoffs so he can make money at the garden in the first round.

  56. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Huberdeu is gonna be a great fit for the Rangers in 14 years. Ya know, after his prime and all.

  57. Czechthemout!!! on

Embarrassing! Being outplayed now by the last place team in the league on home ice with the playoffs on the line.

  58. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

I’ve won more NHL face offs than Richards.
Ok not really… But give me 10 and I’ll win more than him!

  59. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Sather will think signing him at 35 is a sign from Heaven-
    Give Huber dough…

  60. Czechthemout!!! on

That play by Clowe was a remnant of what he did in SJ. Also not something we do. Go to the net and pass the puck to the net from behind the goal line.

  61. I’ve felt months ago that this team would not make the playoffs. Why would anybody in the right mind want to see this team squeak into the playoffs only to get embarrassed. Please don’t tell me they could be like the kings of last year because they are not a talented team like the kings.

  62. “find me a positive besides the lead at the moment. this last 25 mins has been awful”

  63. Why would I want us to get into the playoffs, tommy? Because we don’t have any picks and I’d prefer for our drafting position to be low in hopes that CBJ, SJS, etc. will screw them up.

    But we know they won’t.

  64. Olga Folkyerself on

No lead is safe. Safe is Death. Death is inevitable.

    Therefore no lead is inevitable.

  65. eric, you also told Carp that NYR would never see the top eight again. And you said we would lose 2-1 tonight.

  66. Gift of GAB-orik-Ohio-o-Clowe on

Help would only let this team off the hook. If they win, they get in

  67. “Buy out Richards and give ALL the money to Clowe.”

This funny and true on so many levels…

‘Buyout Drury and Sign Richards’ sounded like a great plan, too…

  68. eddie eddie eddie on

Rangers second line center, D. Bros-sard with a great goal to open the scoring

  69. ThisYearsModel on

I already voted for the star of the game….Taylor Pyatt, our 3rd line winger.

  70. “Please don’t tell me they could be like the kings of last year because they are not a talented team like the kings.”

Henrik Lundqvist is the king of Sweden, I think.

  71. seriously, a guy with Richards’ pedigree, you’d think he could get by to a degree just on smarts and instinct and hockey IQ and experience … but he doesn’t.

  72. He skates, he passes, he shoots, he fights…impressive games for the kid so far as a Ranger…

  73. It was awesome when he ripped that idiot’s helmet off and then pounded on his head. OLD TIME HOCKEY

  74. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Getting Moore will be like the McD trade, except Gaborik was good.

  75. Part of the reason the McD trade was so legendary is because we got Gaborik as a free agent after dumping the Gomer’s salary.

  76. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

So now it’s Gomez for McD, Brassard, Moore, Dorsett, and No Gomez.

  77. tom is our game in hand we lose we fall to 9th should we hold on tonight and scores remain same elsewhere.

    5-2 isles now

  78. By the way, if any team could be like the Kings of last season, it’s the Islanders…

Ok, I am going to barf now.

  79. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

True, but to Dubinsky’s credit, he didn’t back down from anyone, even actual fighters.

  80. After all these nights of me being the only two (2) people (that’s right I vote from my phone and computer) that vote for John Moore to be a star of the game, tonight I will have some company.

  81. Richards scores…makes it 6-1…clutch…

Man, Clemensen is having a ROUGH 3rd period…

  82. HockeymanRangers on

Ok let’s hope they can keep this going tomorrow night. AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT GOES. But their power play still really stinks, all the way down here in PA.

  83. I thought they played like carcillo. Especially Gretzky. Gotta step it up vs the legion of doom or this will be a short series

  84. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

Brassard can pass ,skate ,shoot and has good poise . Hes the real trade piece in the Gaborik gonzo Gomez stleeeee!!

  85. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

    NYR_FAN …and Moore can fight!!!

Rangers got younger with the trade .

We scooped up Columbus’s 2 first round draft pick guys…what a steal!! Sather is a genious.

  86. 1 game without Boyle. 6 goals and a win.

Earlier in the season, 3 games without Boyle. 3 wins.

  87. Dave Lozo @DaveLozo
John Moore just laid a beating on Jack Skille that was reminiscent of what Frank Costanza did to that guy who wanted that doll.

  88. This one cracked me up!

@DaveLozo I’d love to see Dancing Larry’s apartment. I wouldn’t go alone, though.

  89. ZzZz NYR ZzZz©" Don't Stepan the logo!!!"...says Greg L. on

  90. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Brassard with NYR 9 games, 5 goals, 6 assists.

Gaborik with CBJ 8 games, 3 goals, 4 assists.

  91. Is it just me or is Brassard probably kind of a dork? I feel like the Rangers guys kind of try to avoid him off the ice. Seems a bit clingy…

  92. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Oops, apparently Rangers already added Brassard’s 2 goals from tonight into his stats: 8 games, 3 goals, 6 assists.

  93. Remember the all for one, one for all team efforts last year? Hmmmmmm. Zzzzzzzzzzz. Glad my votes matched what you all are voting so far…and I would add Honorable Mention for Ryan Clowe and Zuc. In general, these guys played like they were going through the motions and afraid they might get hurt in a game against the team in the league cellar…not what you want to see at this time of the year. The score was right, but that’s about it.

  94. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Gotta be happy if Brassard matches Gaborik’s production. Can’t say it will happen, but good start.

  95. Skille has 68 PIM in 173 NHL games. Let’s not get carried away. Did appreciate that uppercut, though.

  96. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Washington wins 8 in a row against teams that don’t help NYR (while giving up a point to the NYI in the process), now going to end the steak against Ottawa.

  97. Wonder if Moore actually responded “Sure, why not?” on the ice. Seems like the kinda guy that would.

  98. this was against the worst team in the east so lets not get delusions of grandeur that the rangers were as good as the score tonight. I bet you they lose tomorrow and possibly Sunday, maybe squeak out a point Sunday.

  99. If Washington loses and Winnipeg wins, Gravy, the Jets are only two points behind the Caps as well, and they’d have the same number of ROW wins. Scary.

  100. 3-1 ottawa empty netter

pick up 2 pts on caps. jets hold on they will be 2 back of caps.

  101. missed the richards goal sure it was a masterpiece…

closer game then the score indicated. panthers actually out played them thru 2 periods for sure..

kredier played well in his 7 minutes ..

take the 2 points and run…

  102. The rangers defense has been very spotty. They need staal back, staal seems to balance out the defensive pairings.

  103. winnipeg has

winnipeg ends season thursday isles friday rangers next saturday

  104. Giannone, uncharacteristically, asks stupid question of the week: To John Moore: ‘were you trying to make a statement out there to show your teammates who you are?’

  105. Facto: Richards played like a bow wow for 90% of his ice time. For the other 10%, kudos. Now, reverse the percentages, okay?

  106. I think there were four stars tonight.

Zuccarello, Richards, Brassard, Nash and Lundquist of course

  107. I wish NYR could figure out how to play consistently like the surges of energy of this game

At least they came out in first period with energy

  108. over time in winnipeg

you guys relaize how vital this point is.

we lose ROW WINS and this would make rangers have complete control of destiny

  109. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

DJK, the Jets have the tiebreaker (non-shootout wins) if they end up tied in points.

  110. Torts is “starry-eyed and vaguely discontented, like a nightingale without a song to sing.”

  111. Love that remark likening this win to glistening fool’s gold, Papa…and I agree 100% about that win…I was a rock hound of sorts (not the Elvis type) in my younger days…must lead to using bear icons on blogs in later life.
