And down the stretch they come …

Happy Tax Day. Which is like saying Happy Colonoscopy Day.

Anyway, today there are just 13 days left in this hacked-off, Bettmaned 48-game, 99-day joke of a season. Which is a good time to take a look at the race for the final few playoff spots in the mediocre Eastern Conference.

Eight points separate sixth from 11th (and yes, I’m not counting out the Devils because they have two games left with the Rangers, but seriously, they have the most difficult remaining schedule of the six teams, and their record is actually 15-26 with the 10 losers’ points counted as what they are, losses.

Points-Team (games remaining, home, away)

48-Ottawa (7, 5H, 2A): At Boston, Carolina, Washington, Toronto, Pittsburgh, at Washington, Philadelphia.

47-Islanders (6, 1H, 5A): Florida, at Toronto, at Winnipeg, at Carolina, at Philadelphia, at Buffalo.

46-Rangers (7, 3H, 4A): At Philadelphia, Florida, at Buffalo, New Jersey, at Florida, at Carolina, New Jersey.

44-Winnipeg (6, 4H, 2A): Tampa Bay, Carolina, Islanders, at Buffalo, at Washington, Montreal.

42-Buffalo (5, 3H, 2A): at Boston, Rangers, at Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Islanders.

40-New Jersey (7, 3H, 4A): at Toronto, at Philadelphia, Florida, at Rangers, Montreal, Pittsburgh, at Rangers.

Today’s games that matter: New Jersey at Toronto, Ottawa at Boston.

Tomorrow’s games that matter: Rangers at Philadelphia, Florida at Islanders, Carolina at Ottawa, Tampa Bay at Winnipeg.

  1. Keeping my fingers crossed that we get into the playoffs…I think too many new faces in the lineup to carry this team to the cup this year, but a nice core going forward. I think the Nash acquisition was a major change in team character/talent toward a more grinding, power game. Time will tell whether it was the right move. The two trades helped both teams in certain ways, but I think the chemistry of 4-5 former Blueshirts in Columbus makes the transition easier for them, and has produced better results overall so far. Also, power forwards tend to have a target on their back (say Forsberg) which takes its toll over the course of a season. Lundquist is the glue that holds this team together.

  2. Oh, and I think Moore was a significant upgrade over Biokel/whomever…really like his play and skating so far.

  3. I have tickets for NYR @ Panthers, so these no-talents better not bush-league-it-up.

  4. Schedule schmedule. Lundqvist has this team on his back. They score two a game they win five. They score three a game they win them all.

  5. That was probably the best 60 minutes of 0-0 hockey ive ever seen on Sat night! I nearly woke my son up yelling when Blockness roofed the puck past Nabby.

Its there for the taking now, they just need to bring that effort each night and not give away stupid penalties.

  6. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

Carp…you are just so negative about the NHL and the Rangers. I think you should pass the baton and blog about something you have more passion and affinity for.

You have become jaded and an almost daily downer.

  7. With the subtraction of Gaborik, I think we need another elite scorer and I am hoping that is Kreider. I truly believe that he has 40 goal potential.

But, I like the guys we got and from everything I have read, Dorsett will be another blood and guts type of player who will be very popular at MSG.

I also think that even though they gave up a lot of draft picks, there is a significant amount of talent in the pipeline.

McIlrath, Skjei, Nieves, Thomas, St Croix, Lindberg, Fast etc…….

If John Moore and McIlrath can live up to their potential, I think the rangers have the chance to have the best D corps in the NHL.

  8. Stranger Nation on

Clowe commenting on intensity of Isles-Rangers match up and loving it!

Richards commenting on Masters and loving it!

  9. Yev, have you been following the careers of the prospects you mention?
    McIllrath,limited progress in 3 years.
    Skjei,big but acknowledged as a finesse D.
Nieves, a definite maybe ,ggood size, attitude but raw.
Thomas, another smurf who is not given much of an NHL chance.
St.Croix, good offense but another smallish forward.
    Fast(h),an enigma at this point.

The Rangers needs are a large, mean D who has enough skill to make the first pass successfully and discourage enemy forwards from camping in front of the net.

And larger, stronger forwards with enough talent to put the puck in the net.

Is McIllrath that D, not so far.
Krieder is the primary answer at forward, but like others has yet to play to his size and talent level.

I don’t believe their talent level would be called “significant”.

  10. Brad Richards loves golf. Maybe we should send him on the ice with a 2-Iron instead of a hockey stick. Might do more damage.

  11. Of the 6 teams mentioned above, is there anyone who doubts that we have the most talented, competitive goaltender, who is playing at the top of his game right now???

  12. Some players just don’t handle all the distractions associated with playing in New York. They lose their focus……Richards?

  13. Manny, maybe they should send Richards on a 13-day Golf Getaway Vacation Down Under and double shift DStepan while he’s gone.

  14. Stranger Nation on

Papa agree on Gold Getaway for Richie Rich

No need to double shift Step though; move Bros-hard to 2nd pivot and Boyle to 3rd line pivot

  15. Manny, many thanks for answering the Man with Many Names question for everyone.;)

Running Bear, the Richards comment about “loss of focus” even you don’t believe.

The correct answer is behind door 1, Sappy’s Sanctorum.

An absolutely terrible estimate of a center to maximize Gabby’s skills.

And lest we forget, on this one Torts definite had major input. A good GM takes opinions from his coach but does his own due diligence on a purchase.
Then again we’re talking about the sappy one!

  16. Morning folks, I think I woke up my whole apartment building with the guttural man scream that i bellowed when Girardi scored sat night.

Also, I don’t think anyone knew that Richards would degrade so quickly. I still think there is something physically wrong with him.

eric, must’ve been tough watching that game. The Islanders came in waves and really controlled the final 30 minutes of regulation. But how sweet the ending must have been for you! I would have loved to have seen the look on those dirty Islanders fans’ faces when Girardi popped home the winner.

  22. Wait…Richards hasnt been using 2-iron instead of the stick on ice? weird because I thought that is what he’s been using all season long…

You know, last year when season ended I had no issues with golf tweets from Teethchards but I do have a problem with it right now when we’re pushing to get in and Richards is having his worst career year. Bad taste, Brad.

  23. Sioux-per-man on

The fan in me says 9-0 in the last 9 games. 2-0 so far.
I thought maybe 3 somewhere along the way, but now I’m not so sure. The Devils will be twice as dangerous if they are out of it.

Hank with his first shutout of the year. If he plays this type of game all the way home, we just slip into th 6th spot.

Nash, Cally, Step, Hags, Del Zotto & McDonagh are all going to shine. And maybe just maybe Torts will put Hags with Richards and get him going.

Clowe and company will make this team tougher to play against, and if Staal makes it back in time. The Defense in front of Hank will get even better!

9-0 … picking up steam into the playoffs, I like our Chances against anyone in the league!!! Bring IT!!!

  24. eric,
one of the glaring flaws of the rangers is Richards. He is a anchor for this team and I don’t mean that in a good way.I agree he should be bought out this year but probably won’t be and tortorella most likely is the reason why the rangers give him one more year.

  25. Sioux-per-man on

Hags every line better. Richards can play a solid 3rd line center. He hasn’t been a top line all year, but Step has stepped up and is delivering the goods, so just let it go for now and concentrate on the positive.

Brassard is a solid center, with skill. I really don’t care WHO we call #2 or #3 just glad we have depth at center for the playoffs.

  26. Sioux-per-man on

    Boys get your popcorn ready…..

Dorsett on the ice this week. IF he can get ready in time to play against the Devils. This team becomes tuff as NAILS to play against.

Can’t wait to see him BRING IT!!!

  33. Maybe this has already been mentioned but can anyone explain why we would put 3 of our slowest skaters on one line? Richards between Clowe and Boyle? Really? If the Rangers were a herd of Wildebeest on the Serengeti I could only understand Torts putting them together to protect the rest of the herd because clearly thos 3 would get picked off first as slow as they are. We should call them Darwin line.

Cabrera said, “I’ll play with him,” and tried to pump up Scott by telling him what a great, great talent he was. Scott said he never forgot it. To see them walk off the green Sunday, hugging, speaks volumes about Angel’s sportsmanship, class, and humanity.

Tax Day is comparable to colonoscopies and to the Rangers offensive system. Now that the new guys are here for a week, their O has been gutted too.

  51. Oh, Derick Brassard and his eight goals and 16 assists in 40 games? Or Ryane Clowe and his zero goals before he arrived? Or Derek Dorsett and his magical offensive clavicle? Or that No. 6 defenseman?

  52. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

I see the fishies going 3-3 down the stretch.

Hey..I am sort of a colonoscopy expert..not that I wanted to be one..but I can tell you they are better than paying taxes (less painful and just as invasive) and significanlty less painful then getting your teeth cleaned (especially at my dentist who uses a woman leftover from the last Reich)…

Re:Rangers–relax–this team is going to give us the effort to make us proud and they are still learning to play together..and Staal may pop up somewhere and bolster our defense–Boiler showing signs closer to the guy we loved in the playoff..Brassard (who struggled most of the last game) has some real talent and a significant upgrade at center over some of his predecessors)..Clowe has been a bit of an enigma–but I sense we have yet to see his best outside of his first game…

  54. Speed and Savvy, what a combo. If you can only have one of the two, I’ll take savvy.

  55. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Not sure how the offencive numbers add up, but I would think if you totaled gabby’s, millers, and who ever else came out of the line up numbers and then compare them to clowe’s, brassards, moore’s and see what the difference is, weight have a better idea of the output.

Personally, imho none of the players will one on one replace gabby’s 40 goal 70-80 pt numbers, but clowe is a 50 pt guy, brassard is 40 to 50 pt guy, so theoretically if the other spot taken provided 20ish points it’s a wash.

Again, no one replaces gabby straight up, but depth scoring is much better.

Not like gabby was lighting it up this season. I liked gabby a lot, but I have said numerous times over the past few seasons I’ll take a guy that scores 30 that plays hard all the time in all 3 zones versus a guy that could score 40+ that plays hard sometimes…

Now if we can find that 30 goal guy…organization must think its kreider.

I doubt Gaborik will get his new team in the playoffs.

  65. Papa, re: your 2:24, asking about my 2:02 which referenced Wicky’s 1:52, sentences 4 and 5.

  66. gaborik can take his 40 goals (yeah right, 40 goals. best case scenario, he was on pace for about 24 if this were an 82 game season) and stick em where the sun don’t shine.

if i had a chance to take back any of the ex-rangers from Columbus free of cost for the playoffs, he wouldn’t even be in my top 3.

  72. If Sidney Crosby married Oprah and moved into her home, they would take up residence in the Sidney Oprah House.

  73. Carp,
I don’t get why still seem so down on the Gabby trade. Are they going to miss his goals next year, YES. But he was not going to be around after next season anyway.
Brassard & Moore have played very well since coming over and are certainly adding to the team. Dorsett is a good player (fan fav on CBJ) and will add alot of the toughness you even said was lacking since last season. All 3 players are younger at 22-26, as to Gabby at 31 yrs old. The 3 guys they got combined cost the team 4.8 mil to MG’s 7.5 mil. The team needed Gaborik to play at his best most nights and score this year and he didn’t resulting in their record before the trade (Richards failure also).
If the 3 additions continue to perform as they have, and the team now has some additioanal money to spend in the offseason to replace SOME of MG’s goals – how is this such a bad deal? Don’t you think the Rangers are playing better since the trade while also winning? I liked Gaborik a lot and would of loved to have him on the Rangers next year (comeback/contract season) – but I don’t think we got a bad deal for him.
It just seems at times you think this was a horrible trade. Was it really such a bad deal?

  74. Fight in Colosseum parking lot. Bear announces to fellow posters: “I’ll be right back. Gotta take care of something.” With that attitude, I’d give you 20 minutes on D.

  75. Rangers are playing more like the team a year ago which is to say they’re not very good offensively but Lundqvist is standing on his head. Though Micheletti’s pronouncement that Lundqvist should win the Vezina was absurd, he has been their best player for the last several weeks. After a pretty mediocre performance for most of the season, Lundqvist has been the team’s best player more often than not, and that he’s doing it at this stage of the season is why Lundqvist is as great as he is. I still don’t think the rest of the team is very good.

  80. Papa, re: your 2:53 –

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.

Lloyd @3:05, good point and I’ll go one further. This defense, with less shot blocking (no, I am not saying start doing it more, just making a point) is weaker as a total team AND our blue line, IMHO, is weaker defensively, too, compared to last year. Hence, Hank putting together this streak, subtle as it was at the beginning, obvious as it is now, is quite special. Yes, he truly is one of the best in the league.

  86. 27, that’s exactly what I think. They traded one of their two best skaters and got very little in return, and they won’t be able to replace those 30-40+ goals next year.

  87. the gaborik trade is still terrible considering their record since.

it was painful watching that offense on sat night. this team couldnt score with gabby and will struggle for 82 games next year.

wasnt opposed to moving gabby but we didnt get enough back from offensive talent

  88. by the way, go back and read the thread from the day of the trade … seemed a lot more people agreed with my premise then, before that ridiculous debut by all those new guys that night.

  89. Doodie Machetto on

27, I disagree on Brassard having played well. He had that big first game and one nice pass against the Islanders. He’s been mostly invisible otherwise.

This trade was a disaster. They got almost nothing in return for a 40 goal scorer! These guys don’t grow on trees. I don’t care how poorly he had played this year.

It’s not trading Gaborik that’s the problem. It’s the poor return. Every single player on the team can be traded, depending on the return. The return for Gaborik was NOTHING.

  90. Henrik Lundqvist might get a game off before the end of the season, according to Rangers coach John Tortorella.
“Sometimes you have to make some decisions along the way,” Tortorella said. He added that Lundqvist probably won’t play in all of the Rangers’ final seven games. Lundqvist has already played in 36 of the Rangers’ 41 games and Tortorella wants to try and keep him fresh, even if the Rangers are in danger of missing the playoffs.

  91. Yesterday, in the Ottawa Sun, Bruce Garrioch wrote that the Rangers were one of a few teams trying to entice Detroit to trade center Valtteri Filppula, 29, at the trading deadline.

Garrioch says that the Red Wings listened to offers from Pittsburgh, Boston and Toronto as well as the Rangers.

He has seven goals and eight assists this season and is a UFA at the end of the season.

  92. eric, consider the source on Filippula, though I’m sure Sather had a lot of oars in the water that day (or Gorton did). and I agree on Lundqvist. You don’t rest him until you’ve clinched, and you will probably have two or three days before playoffs start. This might sound nutso (probably), but almost better to play him all the way down the stretch (or until clinching) and rest him in Game 1. More important to get in at this point.

Here’s the link to the thread the day of the Gaborik trade.

  93. Doodie Machetto on

eric, Sather has a mandate to make the playoffs at all costs. All of his worst trades have been at the deadline.

  94. not sure about the “all costs” thing. In other years when it was a race he mostly did minor stuff — Antropov, CABER!, Morris, etc.

  95. Doodie Machetto on

Carp and eric, I agree on Lundqvist. The only ways they should sit him is if they are:

    1) mathematically eliminated; or
    2) clinched, with no possibility of moving up or down, and against a team that is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

  96. Not totally important but:

  102. To add insult to injury, Mile 26 was dedicated to the families of Newtown, CT. Many of the victims families were in attendance very close to the explosions.

Bart Hubbuch ?@HubbuchNYP 3m No words. RT @TimWilliamsCBS: #BREAKINGNEWS: AP reporter says Newtown families were in the VIP section right by the explosion.

  103. Doodie Machetto on

I say Thurs in Florida. Let Lundqvist play every other night from there on out.

  104. There is already one game the NHL needs to make up, right? From the storms. Didn’t that involve the Bruins too?

  105. Yea, Rob. There is already all sorts of outcry in the Twitter world about canceling it.

  106. manny

thurs 4/25 tampa at boston. make up game

in looking at ottawa and bost schedules i dont see how they make this up otherwise one team may have to play 3 straight days

  107. They can make the Bruins play 3 straight days. Especially if we are looking at a first round matchup with them. Three straight games and Playoff round begins on Day 4. Deal?

  108. Rob in Beantown on

MBTA service is shut down and a lot of the city is evacuated or on lockdown. Seems like it would be irresponsible to play a game

  109. no joke if there is a makeup here someone is playing 3 straight days. i was on tsn looking at schedules over final 12 days.

  110. Evrock Around The Clock Tonight on

Whoever is going top the Rangers/ Panthers game in Florida,I think we should get together before the game. If any of you guys are down here when the Rangers play the Panthers up north, we should go to the Panthers viewing party of the game all decked out in our Ranger garb. Lmao

  111. This Boston story makes me sick. I really really hope they catch the jackwagon aasen asshat carcillo hartnellers who did this.

  112. They did, Mama. Apparently they have someone in custody. Sounds like another domestic idiot.

  113. Carp you came through load and clear on your feelings that time. Don’t agree totaly since Gaborik was not one of their best skaters this season or goal scorers.
I do agree its going to be hard to replace even half of Gaboriks goals next season if he is back to scoring like he should. Very little in return on the trade is a bit extreme though – Brassard (talented center depth), Moore (young, good skater, offensively promising D) and Dorsett when healthy (will fill Prusts role) should fit the Rangers style nicely while leaving money left to spend on a UFA or their own RFA’s.
I would rather see depth through all 4 lines, then all the money and talent riding on the top line needing to produce ever night. If they struggle (as they did), it’s tough to win.
I think overall trading for Clowe cost them more, since he won’t be cheap to resign and they gave up a lot of picks for him.

  114. Politics? This is not politics. Unless one defines justice as a political issue rather than an intrinsically human one.

  115. But, I accept your comment as to not bringing “politics” into a hockey blog. I don’t think I did. – And on to more hockey opinion.

  116. I’m not preaching, Coos. Just making the old *NO* [BLANK] joke. Political opinions of any kind usually don’t end well on here.

  117. Agreed. Not attempting to start a fight. My opinion still stands, but it will herein stand silently.

  118. I like our new team, win, lose, or draw. Hope I will love our new team with a few changes next year even more.

  119. Manny :) Deep. Torts’ mom to carseat: “Stop arguing with your father. You have to be bigger than he is.”

    “Are you going blind, ma?”

    “I mean emotionally.”

  120. Sioux-per-man on

I’ve ran 3 Marathons, and had dreams of running Boston one day. I think I can cross that goal off my list. I think I’ll run Fargo instead.

  121. Onecupin73yearsandcounting on

There are times when hockey and sports and other trivial pursuits take a back seat..
This is the time..but let’s not dwell on the negative and get back to normalcy.

  122. All this on top of Losing our 37 year old cousin to breast cancer
Last night. Been up for 50 straight hours. Everything seems surreal.

To clear it up a bit, they have a Saudi National in custody under guard in a Boston hospital.

  124. Czechthemout!!! on

They also have videos apparently of someone bringing several back packs to the areas that had the explosions.

  125. Czechthemout!!! on

Oscar Lindberg has been nominated for the SEL mvp award. Hope he finishes soon and is ready to help in the playoffs. His team starts the Finals in a few days.

  126. Cross Check Charlie on

Czech, do you really think Torts is going to play Lindberg in the playoffs? I don’t see it happening.

  127. Evrock Around The Clock Tonight on

As ridiculous and pointless as I felt that the new metal detectors and wands were after they were Implemented at Florida Panthers games (I learned later that it was instituted league-wide) and although I will always ask the question “Who would bother bombing a hockey game, let alone in South Florida?”, I guess I’ll feel a little bit safer going through those machines prior to the final games of the season here after this Boston marathon business.
For a bit of levity, I can’t tell you how much I wanted to laugh the first time I was practically frisked at the bb&t center and I complained about it when I heard the explanation: “You wouldn’t believe the things people have brought in. We’ve even found two knives so far!” The funniest thing about this is that we’re in a state where you can carry a concealed firearm almost anywhere.

  128. Czechthemout!!! on

    Cross check charlie

Actually, his team is up 2-0 in the finals so he should be done by the weekend.

I dont know, Charlie. But from all accounts, this kid is NHL ready. Silfverberg came last year and was good for Ottawa against us. Kreider was our best forward in he Devils series and was a key player in the Caps series so who knows. But if he is indeed ready, than why not?

  129. Czechthemout!!! on

And you know my feelings about the fact that Kreider should be on the Rangers now, Charlie.

  130. The bombing in Boston is sad. Right across the street from where my wife used to work when we lived in Boston. Thoughts to all those in Beantown and to James G’s family and to everyone who has ever had a rough patch.

  131. As for normalcy, if Lindberg is ready and can play solid minutes as a third or fourth line center and make the team more competitive, why not. Curious to see if Miller or Kreider find their way back up this season or if they will have to wait until next season.

  132. Let me add condolences, James. Mere words are not enough when we come face to face with these things.

  133. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

Condolences to you and your fam.

Good on the NHL to cancel and move to day after season.

I like this post deadline team way better than the pre deadline team

  134. James, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

  135. Coos – not sure you’ll read this …BUT, you have earned MY respect, fwiw with your honest funny and witty commentary. Your story today regarding the masters put in a nutshell what I feebly tried to convey last night. Thanks for that Furthermore, your comment this afternoon was spot on . I respect Manny and well understand where he is coming from but I know that politics was as far from your mind as humanly possible. Thanks for having the Bickels to tell it like it is when necessary .

  136. Coos, out to dinner so late post.

Your earlier post about Sammara was the post from the script of “Appointment in Sammara”, it sounded very familiar and fatalistic.

  137. On this horrific day of tragedy and sadness (Both personal and national–condolences James) why the hell haven’t we beaten this pathetic Montreal team since 1987 again?!?!

  138. Carey price has let in 10 goals on the last two games as well. And we can’t put one past him

  139. dc – I saw and appreciated your Cabrera post last night and just thought I’d elaborate on what you said.

Comns – Should have put ‘DEATH SPEAKS’ on top of those sentences at 3:34. It is actually a short story by Somerset Maugham, “The Appointment in Samarra. The purloined title and content come from an Arabic fable. John O’Hara used it as a short prologue to his novel, “Appointment in Samarra,” and it proved to be the highlight of an otherwise very ordinary literary endeavor.

  140. “May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
    And climb on every rung
    And may you stay
    Forever Young.”

I’ll say this, if the Boston authorities shut down the cell towers right away, they saved a lot of lives.

    Cell detonated IEDs

  142. I repeat, devils are done. Can Habs be caught? Our efforts last week against these guys are starting to look a bit better

  143. Unreal. So devils are basically done, and suddenly the Habs have no goaltending. All more evidence why a shortened season is garbage. Over the course of a full season lots of these teams would fall down to earth while others would get healthier and better. such a joke. And where is Proust tonight?

  144. Looks like the Orange Crud are going after Gallagher tonight. They’ve taken two cross-checking penalties and one boarding penalty on him.

  145. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, LouLam will leverage his first round pick into a top 5, steal the draft, get a Parise, and the team will be back shortly. He’ll also find a way to draft a deep 2nd and 3rd round, having not given away his draft picks. Stick a fork in them, but when your Gm knows how to draft, not for long.

    Rip M-A-R-T-Y….

  146. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

When you guys type Proust it cracks me up because all I can think of is the German word proost!!!

  147. Prooouuuust!!!

Don’t be surprised when lobular trades for lounge or better yet Ryan miller. That’s what they need most

  148. Home at last…

what have i missed? I see B-Rich found some time away from watching golf to wish condolences to Boston…

    still, Bad Taste Brad.

  149. So how about that washed up Ovechkin guy, eh? 22 goals in the lat 26 games! The hottest hockey player in the entire humongous big Universe!

Not too shabby for a player whose NHL career ended two seasons ago ;)

  150. Monty: [about his Mother-In-Law] She says I drink too much, I smoke too much, I gamble. I mean she’s right, but what can I do? I got no… what’s the word…

    Nicky: Class.

  151. As John Davidson said to me one night long ago at a bar in Rye when I good-naturedly chided him about a recent winning game where he gave up 3 or 4 posts, “Part of the equipment, Bub.”

  152. WC Fields: “Come on, sit it, play a few hands.”

“Is this a game of chance?”

Fields: “Not the way I play it, no.”

  153. Waiting for Richie Rich to take the ice one night dressed like Payne Stewart, in knickers and an ascot.

  154. cooscoos, what an erudite reaction to this unfortunate misspelling of Prust’s name, it totally gave you away.

Just flew into Boston, I am heavily into NatSec, so that you know.

  155. Devils have lost 10 straight are 6 points out of the last spot with 6 games to go…I’m going out on (not much) of a limb and saying they are done

also, it wouldn’t shock me if the overachieving Canadiens ended up 5th in the conference

  156. Lloyd, this is a very exciting finish, anything can happen in these last two weeks, but ultimately, the Chicago team will overwhelm anybody who will come close.

  157. it’s just so hard for me to believe that a team with Corey Crawford and Ray Emery is going to win a Stanley Cup

  158. Lloyd, their goalmen are better protected there than Hank is with us, some of their D were derided in NYR (Rozsival) and NJD (Oduya). Plus Hjarmalsson is a shooter to be feared.

  159. They have a potential to become a dynasty similar to the Islanders of old or the Oilers more recently. Some people just put it together with luck or skill(?), who knows how it work for Al Arbour at that time, did he know what and how did it happen? I guess they just take it as presented and run with it… That was my impression in the 70’s when I was a very desperate Rangers’ fan, going to the East Side bars to watch TV and drink.

  160. Admiral Akbar on

I was at the Red Sox game yesterday with my wife. It was a beautiful day, people were off from work, celebrating in the street. Men dressed as
Revolutionary War heros, women, children, jovial college kids hanging outside their windows cheering the Marathon runners. When the game ended, we had to cross the marathon route in order to get back north to Cambridge where our hotel was. Near Fenway was mile 25 of the marathon, so we were real close to finish line. The time was around 2:00 — I looked over towards the finish line, and saw thousands of people shoulder to shoulder, and figured it wasn’t the best place for my pregnant wife to be! So, I elected to walk back west, towards Brookline and try to find a way to cross the marathon, which we did. An hour later, around 3:00, we saw throngs of black-colored police vehicles and ambulances racing east on Mass Turnpike. Then we found out the parade was bombed at the finish line. A beautiful day in Boston tragically ruined.
