It’s Go Time! … Maple Leaves at Rangers

The Rangers return from a three-game road trip (1-1-1) and complete a home-and-home against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following tonight’s game the eight-place Rangers will have only eight games remaining, including Saturday’s crucial visit to Long Island.

Game 40.
Maple Leaves at Rangers.

Ya boys are 3-1-1 in their last five, but coming off a hideous loss in Toronto Monday.

So they sit with 40 points,  two behind sixth-place Ottawa (and prematurely-ordained coach of the year Teddy Roosevelt) and the seventh-place Islanders, tied with ninth-place Winnipeg and two ahead of 10th-place New Jersey. The Rangers have a game in hand on the Islanders, whom they visit Saturday after a couple of days off, and two games in hand on the Jets from the Southeast.

Same lineup, which means Henrik Lundqvist in goal, Roman Hamrlik and Matt Gilroy prucha’d. Marc Staal (eye) and Derek Dorsett (broken collarbone) remain out indefinitely. J.T. Miller was sent to Connecticut (AHL) on Tuesday.

After Monday’s defensive nightmare, Ryan McDonagh will be reunited with Dan Girardi tonight.

We are planning a Live Chat for Friday at noon. I will remind you (over and over, ad nauseum) before then. But plan on being there. Or else.

Don’t forget to vote for the Three Rangers Stars over there on the left <——– and to follow me on Twitter: @RangersReport.

Brian Boyle with the game winning good look , te game winning good wall work and the game winning blocked shot tonight. Total ice time tonight for Boyle will be about 18-19 minutes!

  5. Coach: Due to our recent bumbling and fumbling, we’ve decided to turn over a new leaf and take it two games at a time.

I shouldn’t have said that! Carp will now banish me for 40 games without posting privileges and send me to blog anger management class .

Wow something wicked did just blow in…made it home just in time!

  11. so those don’t count, right mothman? or if they win against this crap Toronto team or the crap Islanders team Saturday nobody should be happy? little perspective on what the comment was needed?

  12. While this end of season ranking math always makes my head hurt, it pleases me that the Debbies are just disasterous

  13. NYR, I think Tiger was really, really happy just before that fire hydrant hit him, and that didn’t work out so well.

  14. Best angle shot Richards has had in 3 weeks. From the right wing corner…at least he was on his forehand!

  15. I know, mothman … it wasn’t Cup-inspiring, but the original comment was, would it kill these guys to win three or four in a row. and tell me you wouldn’t take three straight wins over the next three crap teams.

If hip hop came out of Pennsylvania it proves my point.

Oh, is there a game on? Have the Rangers started playing yet?

  18. was that brassard with the nice give away to kessel for the all alone shot in front of Hank? Nice…

  19. We need to start hitting, defending, forechecking, and scoring. Otherwise we look great tonight

  20. Czechthemout!!! on

Richards falling over himself with a wide open net? LOL! 7.5 million.

  21. Carp 7:29.. Depends who is on top of the leader board for me. Plus if my teams were vere in the SB or Stanley Cup, no contest.

  22. Do any of our Defenseman have any experience with a 2-on-1? Why do they never, ever take away the pass?

  23. Czechthemout!!! on

I dont know. They just are not playing like a team desperate for points. Very little emotion.

  24. Manny, If CABER was here, he would show them…

Hands to the chest, take the man, no swan-diving…

  25. appears to me the rangers have settled in nicely after the trade right back to the same crap I’ve been watching all year.

  26. A general LOL….too many posts making me chuckle

I am seriously getting tired of hearing “Kessel”

  27. Tullamore, Tullamore, Tullamore Dew….

    Looking lovely again tonight…

Thank God you show up for theses games.

We don’t need no stinking goal scorers

When I have my Tullamore Dew

  28. that whiff by Richards is the most hilarious moment of the Rangers’ season so far… and Richards’ career as well…

  29. anybody impressed with clowe so far. I haven’t noticed him since the first game he played for the rangers.

  30. I actually hope it is being spun, Czech…but don’t count on Boyle moving down to the 4th…

  31. These honda commercials are so bad I’d rather see the presidents day sale returned.

  32. I give him some credit for tossing hands with Engelland, but yeah, Clowe hasn’t done much … nor should he really be expected to do much.

  33. There are three guys that I wouldn’t want anyone on our team to fight that play for the Maple Leafs. One used to be a Ranger I think…

  34. I would expect Clowe to be more aggressive on the forecheck and bang bodies…that is his game.

  35. carp, without Kovalchuk and against a bruin team who plays low scoring games. I am confident that game is over, no 3 point game for you.

  36. so what’s the odds the rangers get rid of 1 bad contract (Richards) and adds another (clowe) to there team.

  37. we came back from down 3-1 in the 3rd period last game…someone tell me why we cant come back from 1-0?

  38. LMAO! Richards is drop passing to Leaves again. Somebody buy him a hot dog at the turn…

  39. Boyle SUCKS! Send his ass down. Get kreider up here. No reason why Boyle should be in this lineup, forget the fourth line.

  40. Leafs are better than the Rangers. Toronto fires Brian Burke.. There is no justice as Sather lives on. Oh well.

  41. Just confused as to why, when Richards completely screws the team over, Boyle gets blamed. That’s all. I don’t really get the Boyle hatred. Kreider won’t kill penalties. Kreider won’t take face offs.

  42. LMAO!!!!!!! Awesome C3!!!!!!! Wish I’d found that myself…

can you send me a link for that? Not to use here, of course….

  43. not for nothing but Boyle is a very small problem in the scheme of things with this team.

  44. Manny. 8:13… It’s a general overall frustration that is vented on occasion to selected players at various times depending upon whom made the most or last mistake or whom has contributed the least to the team. Fairness is not a variable in this equation.

  45. Boyle is better off doing buddy the Elf impersonations than he is at taking face-offs.

  46. LMGO. Boyle would be a hysterical Elf. It would be like Will Ferrell in Elf. He’s HUGE.

  47. ranger fans, wait until next year when the bluejackets are in the division with Gaborik scoring goals and the jackets and islanders will be better than the rangers. Future looks great in ranger land, I think I am about to puke.

  48. Czechthemout!!! on

This is why I can t warm up to this kid. Never gets his shot on the net. Either blocked, or wide.

  49. Gravy, You Know You Want It Marty on

Or is it copywrited? Either way, everyone on it but Lundqvist.

  50. Carp….understanding the game, not required. Interpreting stats, definite requisite. :)

  51. Sorry to say, so far, (in spite off our recent goal),,,, it appears our boys are having problems matching the Leafs in the physical aspects of the game

  52. Good thing I broke out my Swagelin 62 shirt tonight. Obviously a bit of that “luck” and “superstition” we were discussing earlier.

  53. Seriously, Boyle should be on the fourth line to improve it, because those three guys are all worse than he is.

  54. Too all you guys who complain about us playing behind the net……Sometimes we can score from behind the goal line……:)

  55. Gravy, You Know You Want It Marty on

The Rangers may be ok in the playoffs if we take away their visas so they can’t play CanadiEn teams.

  56. Remember that time, in the playoffs, when Bickel took a shift as a Defenseman but forgot he was playing Forward that game (or maybe it was the reverse)?

    Classic Bickel.

  57. Ugh, at least Drury would take a hit to make a play, not spin away and throw the puck blindly like Dru 2.0.

  58. Strange thing is, Pyatt doesn’t seem to make huge blunders or take penalties, nor does he do anything especially impressive. Just skates slowly up and down then finishes his shift.

  59. For those of you keeping score….Steve Eminger 12th overall pick in the 2002 draft.

  60. Czechthemout!!! on

They need to sit the center on the slowest line in NHL history. Put the Third liner on the fourth and figure out how to use Clowe the rest of this game.

  61. I’m hoping it’s because of the shortened season because this team is baffling, at times I think, ok, where good and other times I think, wow, this team isn’t that good, this team makes my head spin.

  62. Lets go into our prevent. Hank, 2 D-men and our Center stand shoulder to shoulder from goal post to goal post and dare Toronto to put it past us. Pyatt and Asham chase the puck.

  63. this team is so up and down game to game, period to period. I can’t imagine watching the rangers play in the playoffs this year, going to cause me to have a nervous break down.

  64. Richards’ drop pass led to the penalty, which led to the penalty kill, which turned the momentum in the Rangers’ favor.

Hence, Richards = No. 1 star.

  65. Me too, Carp. I brought it up at the deadline when he was injured and I thought he would be cheap.

  66. I do not like the fact that MSG is showing highlights of Islanders scoring against Rangers.

  67. I hope the 73 Knicks Championship tape is clearer than the video shown in the promo. Looks like a blizzard.

  68. carp, seriously, no kidding aside. I can’t imagine anybody with any sense really thinks that a full training camp is going to turn Richards into a elite player, this guy is so done it’s not funny.

  69. ThisYearsModel on

When Clowe-Richards and Boyle are on the ice, it looks like the Toyota super slow motion camera has been turned on.

  70. I don’t know much about Clowe but has he always been a slow skater? if not, here comes the rangers next bad contract.

  71. One goes in off Richards’ skate in third and he gets the first star from 40 boneheads.

  72. Finally made it home for the game. Turn on the tv for MSG 150 … Seconds feel like hours and always the plug for the Knicks. On the good not NYR and in the lead!

  73. Gravy, You Know You Want It Marty on

    1) Richards
    2) MDZ
    3) Pyatt

  74. Gaborik’s playing well for CBJ… o h well.. Torts didnt like him so i guess we didnt need Gaborik then…

glad we kept the coach (s)

  75. Czechthemout!!! on

They seriously need to look at buying out Richards. They can probably get more production out of Miller next year than out of ” Ritchie” . But they wont.

  76. Czechthemout!!! on

Atta boy Leetchie! Telling it like it is. They were flat for a period and a half.

  77. Czechthemout!!! on

By the way, almost five games in and the best player of the new guys is Moore.

    Sorry to say.

  78. Gravy, You Know You Want It Marty on

I thought they’d buy Richards out after next season, but wonder if they want to risk injury, especially with his concussion history.

  79. I think they’re going to hope that happens, tommyG. I agree, he should be sent packing immediately after the season, but I don’t think they will do it.

  80. CCCP, they weren’t like that last year with the same coaching – I think it’s the locker room. Maybe no Prust? Maybe he was the guy that revved everyone up before games.

  81. duckbill platypus on

NYR_fan, you always had faith in Zuuc…he looks real good this go round!

  82. Yup, great return for a potential 40-goal scorer next year, Czech. On the bright side, they’ll have enough money left to sign Clowe to a bad contract.

  83. Richards will be bought out the minute they think they have a replacement. I don’t think they will object to giving him a shot to get in shape, get his head in the game and give it one more go.

  84. I had my TV on Mute for a while. Did Joe Micheletti use “tall and lanky” in a sentence yet?

  85. ChrisOD

but the season before last season they were as inconsistent as they are this season… with Prust on the team…so no, i dont buy you Prust theory but thanks for trying :)

  86. LOL – hey, if I had all the answers, I’d be getting paid big money coaching this team instead of doing the crap I do all day long.

  87. Tommy G.,you realize I said that about Clowe yesterday and asked all if they resign him and at what contract length and dollars?

Carp,is that whatb youn were agreeing with Tommy on?

He’s basically a third liner on better balanced teams.

  88. wow, merchant, nose picker just got a flying elbow by one of the devils defensemen, down and out. That will be a definite suspension, not only was it charging but he leap in the air with the elbow aimed right at the head.

  89. Zucc is the only guy to stand up to Panufff. Problem is when he does, he only comes up to his nipples.

  90. Does ‘Nuff complain to the refs that it’s not high sticking because his head doesn’t come above his waist?

  91. Sam doing his best John Sterling “caught on the warning track…… no it’s a home run” call

  92. That play is just as typical of Girardi as is making a tremendous block or winning a tough battle in the corners. I’ve said it about him his whole career.

  93. No Carp, sorry misunderstanding….not yours….the McDonald voting….I was suggesting you do your own.

  94. Phaneuf played in the WHL and Nash in the OHL, for what it’s worth, so not opponents in juniors either, Sam. Keep trying.

  95. I understand that Girardi’s is a good not great defenseman and we are lucky to have him but he makes more bad plays than any good not great d-man in NHL history

  96. The mistake at the point happens on the Garden ice a lot. I’m not giving Girardi a free pass, but what the hell was McD doing not taking the pass away???

  97. this team is so frustrating to watch this year, there is no other way to say it, brutal.

  98. What is the problem with Girardi this year? He has pinched at the wrong time so many times this year and he has lost the puck at the offensive blue line more times that I can remember. He has been responsible for a lot of two on ones and goals.

  99. McD did not pick up the 2nd man! 2 games in a row they oth go to the puck holder! Hence hank needs to make a sliding save but is too late getting over

  100. _The power play has also nothing to do with coaching._

Nothing has to do with coaching with this team cuz there is no coaching lol

  101. I wonder how much money Girardi will want when he becomes a free agent. Is he worth more than 4 mil a year?

  102. ThisYearsModel on

Let’s make sure to get that passing pair of Asham-Girardi back on the ice STAT. One shot by the Leaves, and it is in the net. Cripes.

  105. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Boston has better not blow that game…and I mean let the Devs even get one point.

  106. Admiral Akbar on

If Salmon Joe say once more about how “light” the Rangers final schedule is, I’m turning the damn tv off. They are setting up for a collapse as the Fishsticks will cruise into 6th.

  107. Czech,,,,,first time I’ve ever heard or scene the word sycophant in relation to a hockey game …Good stuff.

  108. Czechthemout!!! on

So now in such a big game, this team has come out with almost no emotion or fire. They are not prepared to play in such a big game. That is all on Sather right?

  109. I can actually see the rangers collapse and miss the playoffs, way to inconsistent this year and very sloppy defensively.

  110. Holding an opponent’s stick to draw a penalty is called cheating, Joe. It doesn’t make you smart.

  111. Carp, you think the NHL will ever reevaluate this horrible hooking interpretation we’ve been dealing with for the last 8 years??

  112. Admiral Akbar on

Zucc came prepared to play these 2 games, can’t say so for the rest of them.

  113. Manny, when he plays physical like that, I have no problems with him being on this team.

  114. either do i manny, my point before is that this team needs offense and there is more upside to krieder or miller in that department on the 3rd line. Cally and step are #1 PK forwards anyway.

  115. Admiral….:) but the radio and tv heads only talk about those three…..not dismissing the dang JVR

  116. I would buy out Richards in the off season. Richards is dead rotten wood. Why waste 6.67 million against the cap for somebody who adds nothing.

  117. Well…a point is a point. Even if it’s against a team ahead of us. Gotta get ahead of the Isles.

  118. Czechthemout!!! on

Played like crap in the third until they were scored on than they woke up. This happens way too much.

  119. Olga Folkyerself on

Don’t even try to score. Just let the clock run out like football. The fans love that.

  120. The Gaborik trade buys Richards at least a year more. Him and his Horse Teeth will be gone by 2014, thankfully.

  121. If the rangers make the playoffs, I don’t think it will matter which seed they get because there not beating anybody in the top 4.

  122. Admiral Akbar on

    Carp —

They’ll play for the Bettman Breakaway Contest. That’s why they got Brassard.

  123. Czechthemout!!! on

Moore, when he played, was the second best dman tonight. His reward, no ice time in the third. Great coachng!

  124. I’d rather see Zucc during the 4 on 4, than hope for the best in a shootout…

He sat out the last one…

  125. Mama – no need to do the math – ESPN’s standings page has a separate column for Shootout wins and regulation and overtime wins

  126. Carp…How many juicy rebounds were there for the taking tonight that we never got too?

  127. Admiral Akbar on

Nice to see The Coaches got to work with the new guys on the power play, great results this game.

  128. OMG, bruins were winning 4-0, it’s now 4-3, are you freaking kidding me, unbelievable.

  129. Thanks COD!!! I still prefer not have to worry about this nonsense…..remember when we all prayed for Tampa? I had a great night, but still….:)

  130. Least you can hear the fans tonight, but seems like NYR can’t get a grip on the puck in front of the TOR net.

  131. I think the was the best save ive ever seen lundqvist make. He reacted to that point blank chance perfectley. Also on another note. The game is so fun 4 on 4. So much more action. Reminds me of hockey in the early 90’s.

  132. Olga Folkyerself on

Mama, shouldn’t they do the stick salute when they lose too? Are the fans any less worthy even though the team lost?

  133. It’s true, Getreal. Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of the shootout they had two 5 minutes 4-on-4 periods?

  134. Czechthemout!!! on

They suck! Bottom line! No guts, no emotion. Way too many soft players on the ice mentally. Totally unprepared to play an important game like tonight.

  135. That will probably get the Tiny Tot’s confidence up for the actual game they will play on Saturday.

  136. I love the Hank punch out when we win a game. He always looks so happy skating off after a win. Best reaction in sports.

  137. *When does the Coach realize Richards is a lost cause. Putting him out for the last shift in Overtime is unforgivable*

  138. why is it that even though they won I’m not impressed with there play. This team is very good at being inconsistent, they are frustrating to watch.

  139. Yes manny. Or dare I say just 4v4 for the whole game. I doubt there would be any ties in a 4v4 setting.

  140. Admiral Akbar on

Hank has the best celebrations because he is a real competitor and is not full of any pretenses or BS..

  141. This is 4th time it was mentioned on MSG how clowe fight was a turning point. Should we brace ourselves for an announcement?

  142. Admiral Akbar on

  145. Strange, no excuse for Richards on the ice in the last minute. horrible job coaching there. no?

  146. Stranger Nation on

Boyle had a great game – glad they recognized it. His performance this season must be giving him nightmares or maybe missing his bor-ham Prust too much.

Leonard Nimoy – In Search of….Brad Richard’s game

  149. Manny, Vibin on Eminger. Makes mistakes for sure. but overall, competitive, good skater. he has finally had a chance to play and I thinks he is doing okay.

  150. ANy way we can click on these avatars and enlarge them so we know what we’re lookin’ at?

  151. I’m with you Papa. I can’t really believe that Richards is on the ice in that situation. I would have assumed Boyle would be out there based on his previous play.

  152. Papa, that’s Nicholson, pointing and saying ‘the people who give a chit are right over there.’

  153. Stranger Nation on

Now I feel bad for Boyle.

How did he muster the strength to play hockey after such little sleep??

  154. Manny, not sure, but don’t recall if Boyle was on in the OT. Definitely prefer him over Richards. Torts has to be better than that.

  155. It’s good to see that the Yani is not doing the Post-Game with Al tonight. Leetch is really good!

  156. He wasn’t, Papa. Richards and Hagelin were the final forward pair. I would take Boyle Zucc or Boyle Hagelin over that.

  157. He was really good, Carp. No? It’s not all about putting the biscuit in the basket, right?

  158. Maybe they are trying to help him get over the super secret, but often mentioned, ailment he’s suffering from.

  159. Roger your 10:20 Coos….disregard my 10:19 (2xs) and my 10:22. That avatar is Cookoo Cooscoos.

  160. DelZ and Girardi are serviceable, but overrated. We’d better be looking around just in case. I gave Boyle the third star, too, for undaunted effort.

  161. Maloney is exhausted. He looks exhausted and he just said he lived, “10 minutes from the Airport in Toronto” followed by the Roenick-like word “Minimalize”

  162. Stranger Nation on

Sorry Manny, can’t find what treatment he is receiving for the mystery ‘sleeping’ ailment. That is a strict order from MSG medical office.

Rumor had Torts applying a therapy last seen in A Clockwork Orange…

  163. Stranger Nation on

Was Kessel #1 star? They didn’t show anything after Hank and Hags or did I miss Norwegian Meatball?

  164. Micheletti: “One top Ranger is dealing with life and death issues. No need to go into it here, just want you to know.”

  165. Czechthemout!!! on

You need to stop bothering Hags when he spaeks. And what is it about chewing gum into his ear?

  166. Stranger Nation on

wonder what kind of gum he’s chewing??

Seems like he did not heed my warning for sun tan lotion when meeting Mr. T…

  167. “Do not go gentle into that good night; Rage, rage, against the dying of the light!”

  168. Freedent. Yes, my 55 SPF didn’t do the trick. I was actually whispering to Hagelin, “it’s about time.”

And you don’t have to worry about my self control. I won a contest.

  169. Can anyone with DVR get a nice screen shot of Carp on MSG there? Might make a nice addition to the blog…

  170. send it to me, I’ll put it up … wonder if I can get the video of them mocking me … but what did they say?

  171. Braunschweiger on

Al said it’s not easy being Rick Carpiniello, 26, holding your arm out for 5 minutes.
    Dave said Carpy and laughed

  172. Carp, Al said something like: ” It’s not easy being Rick Carpiniello holding your arm out like that for that long.”

    Nice face time big boy!!

  173. They said something like, “It isn’t easy being Rick Carpiniello” Then Dave said, “It’s tough to hold that Tape recorder up for 5 minutes!”

  174. Czechthemout!!! on

They said something about how tough a job you have, holding your arm like that for 5 minutes. Something to that effect.

  175. Czechthemout!!! on

Would Torts ever let you get that close behind him like that? And if he did, would he let you hold that recorder over his shoulder like that? :)

  176. Let TroutWig contribute to and run a blog from 9Am to 2AM and cover sports with elan at MSG and all over Westchester and meet all the deadlines and I’ll give him a modicum of credibility.
