From the Rangers:

RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FREE AGENT DEFENSEMAN CONOR ALLEN

NEW YORK, March 29, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Conor Allen.

Allen, 23, registered five goals and 14 assists for 19 points, along with 53 penalty minutes in 33 games with UMass-Amherst of Hockey East this season. He established career-highs in assists, points and penalty minutes. Allen led all team defensemen in assists and points, and tied for third among UMass-Amherst blueliners in goals. He also led the team in blocked shots (57), ranked third in assists, tied for fourth in points, and ranked second in penalty minutes.

The 6-1, 210-pounder has skated in 99 career collegiate contests over three seasons with UMass-Amherst, registering 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points, along with 110 penalty minutes. Allen established career-highs in games played (35) and goals (seven) during the 2011-12 season. His seven goals tied for the team lead among defensemen that season.

Prior to joining UMass-Amherst, the Chicago, Illinois native skated in 48 games with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2009-10, tallying seven goals and eight assists for 15 points, along with 69 penalty minutes and a plus-nine rating. In 2008-09, Allen appeared in 46 games with the St. Louis Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), registering five goals and 10 assists for 15 points, along with 48 penalty minutes and a plus-23 rating.

Yes Yes Yes is there any better than watching your arch rival lose to a Yale team, when your deep in enemy territory?

  2. yep

look, I know this is just a depth move but it would be nice one deadline to not say, “Oh good, the Rangers strengthened their AHL roster!”

  3. I will eschew the flippant remarks preferred by many to offer the -blindingly obvious- important view that this is an organisational depth signing with next to no relevance to the NHL team’s short-term prospects.

  4. But it is better than saying, Oh, crap, the Rangers just screwed themselves for years to come.

Or better than saying, Glen Sather announced that the Rangers have traded a draft pick for John Scott.

  5. Do you think Richards regrets coming to play here especially if the offers were equal from several other places?

  6. Was this the kid they wanted via the widget earlier this week? or was this the kid that no one wanted because they were all fighting over the one who went to detroit?

Perhaps a trip to Pittsburgh, the trip to the frozen four just got a little easier!!!

    Let’a go Boys!!!!

  8. “Hey James here’s 60 million dollars. come here and do your best for as long as you can when you’re feeling up to it”….I sure as hell wouldn’t regret that lol

  9. What I don’t get is how Sather didn’t see this Richards thing coming…I mean he was already
slowing down in Dallas…It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see that he was going to slow down more once he got to NYC.

List of 30+ goal scorers since Lockout II.

Narrowing down the list to guys that have put up more than one 30+ goal season you get 56 players. Of those 56, I counted 36 (could be off on a couple players) of which had done so with their original team, which includes a couple of guys like Gaborik that did it with both his original and his new team. Of those guys, none were Rangers draftees. Drafting productive, if not elite, offensive talent has been an issue with this team for a long time. And there’s no more expensive role to fill than a premier point producer when it comes to free agency.

“He also led the team in blocked shots (57″

Yes, but how’s his snow angel?

  12. Cross Check Charlie on

Staal Wart – I have a feeling that Richards problem might be that he did nothing during the lockout and has been out of shape. An off season of conditioning and a training camp and maybe he comes back next season and plays up to his previous standards. That is, if the Rangers don’t buy him out.

  13. czechthemout!!! on

Sather was awfull at the draft from 84 – 99. He was a poor choice when they brought him then and he is still a poor choice. Just because he made some good trades cleaning up the mess he him self created, doesnt absolve him from the plethora of stupid moves and draft picks he has made.

    Fire Sather!!!

  14. Carp, there’s actually plenty I wouldn’t do for money. Playing the sport I love is far from one of them.

  15. The logical move would be to keep Richards and gaborik next year with a full training camp and season, than after next year the rangers buy out Richards and gaborik walks.

  16. tommy,

Agreed. Unless you can trade or in Richards’ case buyout and then sign someone else, those guys to get players to replace the offense those two are supposed to provide, which is a 35-40 goal scorer and a 50+ assist playmaker.

You’re not going to get either of those for Gaborik or Richards straight up, they’d have to part with more assets that will weaken the team somewhere else. Their best hope is that those guys return to the level that’s expected of them and get some improvements that should come from guys like Kreider and Miller having a pro season under their respective belts.

  17. 60 million comes in handy when you have to replace the crankshaft on your ’88 Celica.

  18. Cross Check Charlie,
It may be because Richards didn’t play through the lockout, but he’s a professional…it’s his job to make sure he’s in shape to play…just sayin’

  19. Not to exempt Sather by any means, but Cherepanov very well could have been an elite talent. RIP.

  20. iWicky "Frag Out!!!" on

    I’m at work…

What trade offers? For who? What the hell am I missing?

  21. “Snow angel” is my new favorite Rangers concept, so thanks to Carp or whoever brought this to our attention. A note of respect to the Rangers’ snow-angel specialists, mind you, what with the pucks in their broken teeth and all. But when I became a man I threw away childish things, I think the saying goes, so enough already!

  22. AGrossRecord Toward the end of practice, Gaborik and coach John Tortorella had a 12-minute coach-player discussion along the sideboards near the bench.

AGrossRecord Torts did most of the talking. It never appeared to get heated but there were times when Gaborik didn’t seem to be looking at Torts 2 hours ago · reply · retweet · favorite

AGrossRecord Torts and Gabby would not talk about what was said. Gaborik also wouldn’t answer when I asked him whether he agreed with Torts assessment 2 hours ago · reply · retweet · favorite

  23. Sounds like every long coach-player interaction I’ve ever seen or been part of.

  24. Agree with Asham in place of Pyatt. If Gaborik doesn’t score, Asham and Newbury beat the living carcillo out of him. It might work.

Lev, maybe try Leva instead? :-)

  25. Cerny, Zipay et al saying the Allen contract only starts next year (like the Nicholls one recently), so still doesn’t yet contribute to the 50 limit, in terms of deal flexibility at the deadline.

  26. Cross Check Charlie on

“it’s his job to make sure he’s in shape to play…just sayin’”

    I agree with that.

But, your previous post insinuated that he’s done. Maybe not. Maybe a good off season and he’s back to where he was.

  27. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

CT, interesting stats, for sure. Actually, there were 2 Ranger draft picks on that list of 30 goal scorers. Prucha and Amonte. BUT, I believe, both NOT drafted by Slather. But, he’s done really well in his 13 years, for sure.

  28. Coos- that works only if you want to find a few terrorist. Scoring goals in hockey is a much more difficult proposition.

  29. Richards wasn’t working out because he was busy as one of the head guys in the lockout discussions for the NHLPA.

  30. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I’d say we stand pat at the trade deadline. Slather has done well. Just like Shero. He used his prior depth and draft picks to round out the team. Voila!! Presto!!

Shero only got Murray, Morrow and Iginla. HA! Take that!!
Slather got Zuccarello, Fast, Fasth, and…..ta da!!!….Conor Allan.

    WOOHOO!!!

    Extend Sather!!!! Extend Sather!!!

  31. Plenty of guys work 9-5 and still work out and stay in shape. Never mind a three hour meeting twice a week.

  32. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, MacKenzie, on NHL radio this afternoon had some interesting points. Talked about how many teams in the east, aside from Boston, Montreal may just not want to hurt themselves by making trades because Pitt is SO deep. About the Rangers deadline deals he said they should think long and hard what they want to accomplish. With Pittsburgh so strong, he was pretty strong in saying that this ‘underperforming team’ can’t make up enough with trades to make them true contenders.

Then he talked about Calgary. Sounded familiar. He said their lack of being able to draft was their downfall and because of it they were forced to go this route.

  33. If Richards didn’t bother to stay in shape during the lockout, it speaks volumes about his integrity and dedication (as in lack thereof) as a professional athlete. Forget about his Conn Smythe from near a decade ago…it’s a disgrace for a guy making THAT much money to sit on his ass eating cheez doodles knowing the lockout could end at any point and he’d have to pop those Mr. Ed teeth in and earn his salary again.

Richards may end up being a worse signing than Gomez or Dreary…

    THAT is a horrific thought

  34. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I think the Devils may go 2 rounds this year. I like their chemistry despite injuries. Once Kovie’s back, whenever it is, they will be fine.

  36. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

CTB, sure it’s nice to draft 30 goal scorers (and no one is defending their draft history), but it’s not bad to trade for a 22-year old Graves either – or a 20-year old McDonagh. I understand your point, but does it really matter if they draft young players or acquire them via trade?

  37. I’m sure Richards was working out. I was just saying he wasn’t playing games since he was one of the main NHLPA reps. So he didn’t get to play overseas or anything.

  38. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Gravy, how can you deny that drafting well deepens your organization?? I don’t get that. Drafting with a 20 % NHL efficiency is better than a 35% efficiency? Please explain.

  39. Drafting is the cheapest route. Trading is ok but even then you better get the guy when he’s in his early to mid 20’s to get his best years. The age when most guys become UFA typically aligns with when most guys have hit their productive peaks. From then on you’re hoping that the guy can maintain a couple of peak years and a gentle decline, which is more likely to happen if the guy is hitting UFA at the earliest age possible. Getting guys that are already around 30 if not older is usually not going to pay off vis a vis the long term deals.

  40. Depends on how you look at efficiency Matty. Would you rather have fewer of your draftees make it to the NHL but those guys turn into top 6 forwards and top 4 D or a starting goalie? Or get more guys that are lower skilled.

  41. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

What has made Detroit and the Derbils, too, is that they go into the 6th, 7th rounds and find hidden pearls that become a Zetterburg (7th round) or a Datsyuk (round 6). THAT’s called doing your homework. Good front offices are complete and do it.

    Many don’t.

  42. You know, not for nuttin’ but when Carp or anyone else says something like “agree, Czech,” it’s a pain to have to scroll through twenty or thirty posts to see what’s being agreed upon. Maybe if we put, “agree with your 5:58″ or whatever, it would make it easier on the interested. Plus, I hope the time line is included in the new format.

  43. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I’ll go along with that. Note that most of the players that Shero traded for his big 3 deadline deals are draft pick depth. Because he picked well and has layers of NHL prospects. I don’t blame him for taking his shot, especially because Sid is healthy again (who knows for how long?) and the team is ready. Makes sense!!

Sather can’t do that because he hasn’t drafted well.

According to MacKenzie, somehow Feaster accepted the deal despite the fact that both players sent by Pitt were C+ prospects, plus the first round pick.

  44. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Jshim, from your mouth……supposedly lots of teams want both of them. Boston wants Clowe. They may have a bit more as trade bait than we do. Maybe.

  59. @GlobeKPD@ : Recovery for NYR Staal slower than hoped. Earliest hope of return now would be mid/late April. Good days/bad days. Frustrating.

  60. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

I think it’s best if staal take the rest of the season off…. No reason to rush back whatsoever.

  61. I dont know, Gross seems to think Gaborik is on the way out either now or at the end of the season. I think that is a crock. I think Torts is at odds constantly with his best players because he is often pushing them harder to be better. Gaborik has not done anything this year, and Torts is just trying to get him playing well. Why on earth would Torts want to simply beat up on Gaborik and not get him going? Whatever he is doing, he is trying whatever he can to help Gaborik.

I agree that it seems like Richards should be in the doghouse more, but maybe the experience is that if he gets Gabby pissed enough, he’ll get something from him, whereas Richards’ confidence is so low, nothing Torts can do to punish him will help at all.

Say what you want, but Vinny Prospal basically flipped Torts the bird on national TV in Tampa, but when he had the chance, Prospal signed up here in a nanosecond.

Yea, Manny. With the exception of one goalie, Nicolai K, 2001-4 or so, they have had nothing between the pipes.

  70. Hey Carp and company,

You guys see the nhl.com voting for top goalie in the league? Out of 10 “analysts”, most had Hank #1, the rest had him #2, and only one ANALyst didn’t even have him on the list, behind Rask, Lehtonen, Price and Anderson; to name a few. You guessed it: Barry Melrose. King of the dooosh!

  71. TheGoodShepherdChastened on

In honor of my Unforgettable master (Mi-Mi, Poo-Poo, Tsk-Tsk???).

    Yeah. Prolly. Unh-unh. S’long.

  72. Just curious, why weren’t the Rangers in the running for those other 2 Dmen, one being who signed with the Red Wings?
One day someone has to explain to me why these players are free agents instead of going into the entry draft. Maybe they were in previous drafts but were never selected? Sorry for my newbieness when it comes to the draft but I never understood whch players are eligible to be drafted as opposed to the i.e. NFL draft, where we know all the players are coming out of college.

  73. Manny, right? I was a little off though. 6 first place votes, 2 second place votes, 1 third and a goose egg from Barry(he could’ve even picked Hank 8th best, didn’t make the cut). We know his vendetta with the Rangers will never die, but he just thrives on being a fool in defiance of fact. Cool.

  74. Oh. Ducks beat the Blackhawks for a third straight time. Haven’t lost to them all season. Am I still stupid for calling the Ducks the team to beat in the west?

See how the next few go, but if we don’t seem to have it, then it may be smart not to try to add for the sake of the present. Problem is, and it is a big problem, will our GM know who to sell so it doesn’t hurt us, and grab a pick or two AND if we get a pick or two, what are the odds he uses them wisely??

As such, it is a dilemma. Who knows what he will decide…..
