First, please take a moment to vote in the poll on the right. If it remains near 50 percent, then nothing will change.

Also, if you have serious concerns about the new look (see the thread below), please feel free to email me at rcarpini@lohud.com. Suggestions made in the comments section can easily be missed, especially on a game day. Thanks.

From the NYR:

RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FREE AGENT FORWARD MATS ZUCCARELLO

NEW YORK, March 28, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Mats Zuccarello.

Zuccarello, 25, registered 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points, along with 30 penalty minutes in 44 games with Magnitogorsk Metallurg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) this season. He tied for fifth on Metallurg in goals, and ranked sixth on the team in points and assists. Zuccarello also registered two goals and two assists in seven playoff contests with Metallurg. He tied for second on the team in goals, third in points, and fourth in assists during the postseason.

The Oslo, Norway native returns to the Rangers where he has registered eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points, along with 10 penalty minutes in 52 career regular season contests from 2010-11 to 2011-12, after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent on May 26, 2010. Zuccarello tied for the team lead and tied for fourth among NHL rookies with nine power play assists in 2010-11. He also tied for fifth in the league with five shootout goals and second with three game-deciding goals in the shootout that season. Zuccarello tallied his first NHL point with a power play assist on December 27, 2010, against the Islanders, and notched his first NHL goal with the overtime, game-winner, and added an assist for his first career multi-point performance, on January 5, 2011 against Carolina.

The 5-7, 179-pounder has also skated in 73 career regular season games over two seasons with the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), registering 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points, along with 38 penalty minutes. Last season, he ranked fifth on Connecticut in points (36) and power play goals (five), tied for fifth in assists (24), and was tied for sixth in goals (12) despite skating in only 37 AHL contests while splitting the season between the Rangers and Whale. Zuccarello made his North American debut on October 9, 2010, against Charlotte.

Prior to signing with the Rangers, Zuccarello skated in two seasons with MODO of the Swedish Elite League (SEL), registering 35 goals and 69 assists for 104 points, along with 100 penalty minutes in 90 career regular season games. In 2009-10, he captured the Guldhjälmen award as the league’s Most Valuable Player after leading the SEL in scoring with 64 points in 55 games. Zuccarello has also represented Norway in several international tournaments, including at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.

  1. hopefully Zuccarello can add some scoring but makes the rangers even more of a softer team.

CARP the “jump the shark” wasn’t mine.

But I’m thinking I would rather try to jump a shark …. than trade Gaborik for and old Boyle!!!

CARPani’s – I would like to buy a round for everyone!!!

    Welcome home, Bilbo.

In regards to the new look site, as long as we don’t have to pay nobody is in a position to complain.

  4. Time out. Seriously.

Everyone seems CERTAIN that the Penguins have now secured the 2013 cup. Really?

Guys, that was a team that looked great on paper last year – just like us. They however were hammered by Filthy first round. For a team currently enjoying paper champion status (eh hem, guilty) we should be aware that too many cooks in the kitchen might make for a lengthy recipe for success.

NO – I dont think Pittsburgh got worse this week nor do would I bet against them but surely they play multiple seven game series for a reason. I think we CAN challenge them if we play to potential and have ZERO doubt that the B’s, Habs, Ducks, Blackhawks, etc can handle them as well.

Lets go Rangers – big one tonight and another high scoring outburst wouldn’t hurt the psyche of this squad.

Come one come all the Lord of the Rink has entered the race.

The #PenguinSlayer is here to start the Iggyshuffle!!!

  6. Tommy – Zucc plays with some feistyness and isn’t afraid to work the boards. Wouldn’t say he makes us softer than when Boyle’s in ;-)

  7. Is it true that MZA cant officially play until he has his visa issues figured out? If it is true then how was he even allowed to enter the country?

  8. You really got this lady, Liz Johnson, a lot of comments, Carp. Looks like her LoHud Blog is BLOWING up. I felt bad about inundating her blog with our BS so I tried to make her feel better.

  9. Dudley, we should start by making at least one of our regular season games against them somewhat competitive before saying we have a chance in a 7 game series.

  10. “Where is Torts? I want him to stand next to me during the press conference so I look a little bigger.”

  11. Apparently Shero has said there is one more major move in the works for the Pens and Tyler Kennedy and Dustin Jeffrey are missing from practice

  12. I’m still wondering why the Pens chased after B. Morrow when they were in the hunt for Iginla. Can’t imagine Morrow getting major minutes over Iginla, Neal and Kunitz. And Dupuis has worked well with Crosby the past few seasons.

  13. If there is one lesson learned being a lifelong Bonehead it is you cannot buy a Stanley Cup.

Penguins will not win the Cup.

  14. stevezipay So I ask Ottawa coach Paul MacLean his thoughts on Iginla deal: “I don’t know why we’re going to bother playing the playoffs.”

  15. Maybe the Penguins are trying to trade for Kiprusoff (who would rather stay with his newborn in Calgary).

  16. Gravy, You Know You Want Some Marty on

In my opinion, it’s more of a pain to scroll down on mobile than online. So my vote is new comments at the top for that reason only. Unless there is a way to refresh the mobile so that it jumps to the last comment you read, like on the interweb.

  17. Lev – I hear you but think you’re missing my point.

We haven’t been at our best though I believe we are riding an upward trajectory – I trust we’ll be playing an altogether better brand of hockey by playoffs.

I’m also referencing that a team that just won 10+ in a row is now a significantly different squad – could take some time to see it gel the way they might like.

Finally – a pair of regular season games don’t make a seven game playoff series. It’s just an entirely different animal.

Are you arguing that we WOULDN’T have a chance in 7 games against the Pens in another handful of weeks? If so and depending on your confidence level, I’d love your thoughts on a few investment ideas.

  18. The Penguins also lost LeTang to a toe injury, possibly Flower to a concussion and then, as Dudley points out correctly, added a ton of different players to their most important lines. Could backfire.

  19. Doodie Machetto on

    Carp,

I tried to answer the poll but “Rangers miss the playoffs” wasn’t an option.

  20. Doodie Machetto on

In all seriousness, I like the comments on the full site the way they are, I just want the mobile site to match how they are displayed. Failing that, I would prefer the mobile site to put the newest comments at the top and the full site to remain the same. Failing that, I would prefer both at the top. I just absolutely hate the mobile site the way it is.

  21. I’d hate to say it but almost for the pure schadenfreude of the Greatest Team of All Time not winning this year, I’d almost make that deal with the hockey gods, watching the Devils win if it meant the Pens not winning.

  22. The more I look at the new site, the more I hate it. There are no breaks in between what each person is saying. The shading on this site is terrific for ease of reading. Second, it focuses too much on the flashiness and not enough on content and I don’t know if it’s built to handle the absurd volume that RR generates. Third, if someone wants to be funny and post as “Marc Andre Fleury” or something like that, the Gravatar thing ruins all that. Fourth, you can’t use *bold* _Italic_ +underline+ or @Red@ on that site. Which was really hard to learn here. Fifth, Emoticons…really? I know Jimbo will enjoy it but the rest of us might not. Finally, I don’t like change. Never have, never will. I like my life to remain consistent.

    My two-cents.

  23. I refuse to believe the Iginla “trade” has happened until Doodie can prove it.

My preference also for comments to stay top-to-bottom, but to have a “skip to newest post” option or something.

  24. Just put a “jump to bottom” button on the mobile site. That would probably make things a lot easier.

  25. Simply judging by the way we’ve played as a team so far, nope dont think we have much of a chance. Pens make scoring seem easy.Add Iginla to that, even if it takes a week or so to gel together, and they have a clear path.If Fleury can stop a beach ball there is no reason the ECF shouldnt be Boston-Pens based on the makeup of teams right now. What would I like to see the Rangers do to better themselves at the deadline? Still debating that myself. Wanted Iggy but realized that had no chance of happening. Definitely want to see someone that can kill penalties brought in. Cullen? No reason for Minny to move him though. Jagr? Not a fan at this point.

  26. Jay Feaster just traded Cammalleri to the Penguins for Chad Enfreuder, a 34-year-old backup goalie in the ECHL.

  27. Retire Brad Park's #2 on

So Zuccarrello has been in North America for about ten minutes, and Tortorella has already decided not to play him tonight or (maybe) in Montreal.

Why? Because this team has such incredible chemistry during their one game winning streak?

P.S. I prefer to scroll down to read the newest comments in chronological order. TSN does it in reverse, and it’s hard to understand why posters are %)&^(*&^ing on each other unless you read the earlier posts. IMHO.

  28. Stranger Nation on

So will Frodo (MZA) prevent Golum (Malkin) from getting the ‘ring’

Is Iginla an Ork, because we know Orpik is…

  29. MZA is Ruotsalainen's love child on

Had to jump in. Trading Gaborik would be a poor handling of our assets. He is coming off of shoulder surgery in the offseason. I have had that surgery, and it took quite a while to get back to full strength to be able to snap off a hard shot – which is how he scores. Combine that with the fact he was moved to the opposite wing from what he has played most of his career (to make room for Nash) and his struggles aren’t surprising and likely temporary. He’s been a good soldier as a Ranger, even with Tortorella’s focus on a defense first system. His value is the lowest it has ever been or likely will be, so we will not get a huge return for him, and he very well could return to form later this season or next. Find me a 30 goal scorer available in return, then that’s a fair trade, but not for some spare parts.

  30. If -Fleury- Barrasso can stop a beach ball there is no reason the ECF shouldnt be Boston-Pens based on the makeup of teams right now….

    YES

  32. Apparently Iginla is having immigration issues. I guess the Canadians won’t let him go…

  33. If youse have any more serious concerns/suggestions/questions about the coming re-design, please email them to me at rcarpini@lohud.com … going to be tough to sift through all the comments on a game day and find those comments about the new look.

  34. CARP,

CTBlueshirts suggestion is a good one … not as a replacement, bu in addition to just putting the latest comments first.

  35. Stranger Nation on

Challenge with new format is pics are given priority so we will have to wait for pics to load causing major delays, every time.

Would love a ‘text only’ option if there isn’t one already.

  36. Wicky©This team is too soft...bring back the Rupp! on

so last night I see on twitter that iggy goes to Bruins and I’m musing here about it and….

    The Pens do it again…unbelievable!!!

Glencross would be a good player for us, not for Gabby straight up, but in a reasonable deal.

I wouldn’t trade gabby unless you get goal scoring back…consistent goal scoring.

I think Clowe is a no brainer, and I WOULD send a 2nd rounder for him in a heartbeat. Today is the first day I have actually seen his name linked to the rangers in the rumour mill.

  37. Sioux-per-man on

I’m with Gravy – if your going to change, might as well improve something about it that makes it easier.

That way you only have to scoll down your last message and read what’s above. Now you have to scroll all the way down, and move up to your last message.

  38. CARP,

My only other suggestion is for the design team to really think hard about what distractions they can eliminate from the blog (particularly the mobile). Take out everything that dissuades people form engaging (I know some stuff has to remain because it’s advertising, pay-by-link, etc. … but as much as can be eliminated, the better the user experience and the higher likelihood of engagement frequency and engagement duration).

    Best,
    – The one and only Miami Pimp

  39. Carp, is there a way to filter out those comment I don’t agree with before I read them?

  40. Manny, I have addressed the breaking up of the comments, as has Josh, 26, for his blog, and others. Hope they can figure that out.

I also prefer status quo, but I understand the need to be more mobile-friendly.

  41. Wicky©This team is too soft...bring back the Rupp! on

    Carp
Do whatever you think with the redesign. I also think the avatar thing would be cool. As far as the rest goes, what everyone else thinks is fine with me.

Keep Prust on Woywitka—> just put a translation link for Ukrainian along with it ;)

  42. Stranger Nation on

Both Neal and Iginla play RW, so the lineup

    Crosby – Iginla – kunitz

Malkin – Neal – dupius (if no Malkin, then Sutter)

  43. Marian the Friendly Ghost on

Who figured Coyotes/Kings last year in the west?

Mother Hockey is a mad scientist friends

  44. Carpsie, is there a way to place Eddie3X, Koos and Papa in a perpetual moderation folder???

  45. I’m not sure why Zucc wouldn’t be playing….

Oh yeah, Torts hates Zucc…I almost forgot…

  46. pretty sure i read somewhere yesterday that due to visa issues zucc may not be available to play for a week or so

  47. Glencross is better than the other Flames names bandied about today. At least his cap hit is a reasonable $2.5M. I still don’t see it being a game changer for us and thus, not likely.

  48. Wasn’t it Glencross that nailed Drury and basically started the steep decline for pizza pants?

  49. Doodie Machetto on

Nowhere worth trading Gaborik. Seriously. I would say St. Louis for Shattenkirk, but no way do they make that deal. Maybe Gaborik and MDZ for Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart?

  50. Carp, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of Bonehead nation come to their senses and start Vibin with PB. :)

  51. Wicky©This team is too soft...bring back the Rupp! on

I have no idea why everyone is so excited about MZA. His stature seems to be the main talking point and that is like saying we want VPG because of his haircut.

  52. Sioux-per-man on

WOW!!! Just checked out Walters on the food blog.

Just imagine what Carp can do with the new site with the Rangers!!!

Perhaps you’ll combine them…… Eats & Greats from MSG????

We get to see the $20 Prime Rib sangwich?

  53. @wicky

because most people dont know much else about him, lol.

    hello all!
obviously had to comment on this article today.
my boy is finally coming back!

  54. Sioux-per-man on

Stranger – I’m sure Zucc jumped in his Fiat and drove it over…… just like the commercial :)

  55. Wicky a second rounder for Clowe is only for the other 29 teams. If the Rangers want him they’ll need to give up McD, Stepan, Christian Thomas and one of Kreider or Miller.
