It’s Go Time! … Rangers at Senators; Live Chat Friday at noon

782

Game 33.
Rangers at Senators.

Ya boys on a one-game winning streak and NHL-undefeated in two, technically 3-1-1 in five.

They play the second of a three-game road trip tonight at the arena that changes names every five seconds, in Kanata, Ont.

Mats Zuccarello’s signing was made official today, but he will not play tonight (I’m assuming they want him in at least one practice before he plays; and assuming they don’t want to break up the lineup that worked in Philly).

So same lineup, meaning Matt Gilroy and Darroll Powe are prucha’d along with Zuccarello.

Henrik Lundqvist in goal against Ben Bishop.

  3. Good evening all! I’m watching the game from a rink in Connecticut, where later I’ll be watching CTBlueshirt play in a beer league game! Big hockey night for mama!

  4. “(I’m assuming they want him in at least one practice before he plays; and assuming they don’t want to break up the lineup that worked in Philly).”

wrong… Torts hates MZA. Simple as that.

  5. Koos,,, I thought McLain had his foot accidently stepped on by Bob Lanier and the size 22 triple EEE Routeweillers he called feet.

  6. You made the page shrink to the size of Tortorella’s duvet with those exclamations, grabby. Also the most cogent thing you’ve said in weeks.

  7. it’s amazing with all the injuries the Sens have had this year and where they are in the standings. They kind of remind me of last years ranger team.

  8. ThisYearsModel on

LGR. On SLAmtrack going from Santa Barbara to Orange County with a loudmouth jerk on the phone behind me. Got the music turned up all the way on the iPhone. Need to make a statement tonight.

  9. gotta go now. watching on hockeystreams. tomb i’ll chat with you in a minute. anybody else joining us?

  10. I understand the desire to make quick passes, but for f’s sake, make sure you don’t flub it!!

  11. ThisYearsModel on

Some doofus sat next to him. This should be good. Now I can film when the other dude feeds him his cellphone.

  12. Olga Feedthecat on

You want to beat a pressure team on the power play? Try making two passes in a row.

  13. ThisYearsModel on

Ths moron is giving everyone in his phone a freaking play by play of his stupid trip……………..station by station. I don’t HAVE this many friends to call. What a pile of Carcillo.

  14. Heres a trade for ya’s: Gaborik for a “player never to be named” ……..addition by subtraction.

  15. Nice job by Kreider hustling back and force that offsides – good to see the kid has his legs right now

  16. Those MSG heads never call a match without saying “[fill in player or coach name] was telling me/us this morning.”

  17. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, I’m disappointed you didn’t use Mats Prucharello. I was pretty proud of that joke.

  18. This 10-minute anecdote about Roger Neilson by the Sens broadcasters thankfully not interrupted by any action on the ice.

  19. If I wanted to listen to long anecdotes about something Senators-related during the game, I’d put Sam and Joe on instead.

  20. Carp, how can I help get the website numbers up when it complains that I’m posting comments too quickly?? =)

  21. Czechthemout!!! on

Not too many chances but an overall good road period. They will need to step up the offense next period.

  22. The No. 1 line sure had a crappy first period, and the No. 1 center some of you were putting in the Hall of Fame two nights ago had three putrid shifts, including the PP.

  23. ThisYearsModel on

One period complete. and I slayed the loudmouth dragon by playing “Silence is Golden” on my iPhone and singing along with it. My falsetto is not real good anymore. Everyone around me was laughing, and he finally shut up. Now. LGR and LGCarp!

  24. putrid’s a good word for that period – this is certainly not the type of game that will help me convert my wife into a hockey fan

  25. Sioux-per-man on

    Tied

Looks like its going to be another one goal game for both of them.

    First goal wins??????

  26. DelZ. Sam just about made him the player of the period with only three or four giveaways and near giveaways.

  27. Papa Bear – it would stop the complaining when I’m watching hockey if she wants to watch, too

  28. Yup, overall, good road period.

Great job, ThisYears. I would have preferred hearing that you shoved the phone down his throat, though.

  29. Slatsko Folkyerself on

    Penguins are ready.

Is Sather going to sign anybody?

Does anybody want to play here?

    Is Sather still anesthetized?

    FIRE SATHER!

  30. Sam: “NICE play by Gaborik on the boards.” I haven’t seen a nice play by Gaborik on the boards in eons. Tonight included.

  31. LOL – one TV and no cable, Papa Bear – she likes to spend time together in the evenings

  32. I saw someone wrote, “bush-leaguing it up”.

    Glad I’m being represented.

These no-talent clowns are going to lose BIG tonight, just you wait.

  33. “Hamrlik vs. Pyatt in a match race, length of the ice, who loses?”

Carp, whoever chooses to watch it!

  34. Slatsko Folkyerself on

Hamrlik vs. Pyatt in a match race, length of the ice, who loses?

    The timekeeper. His watch stops.

  35. _Good to see the refs got the reminder that Chris Neil is not to be called for anything._

    Is this sarcasm?

  36. Doodie Machetto on

“Hamrlik vs. Pyatt in a match race, length of the ice, who loses?”

    The Rangers.

  37. Doodie Machetto on

There are good 0-0 games, and bad 0-0 games. This is, unfortunately, the latter.

  38. Czechthemout!!! on

So now it is not a good thing to knock someone crowding he goalie down? Ok!

MDZ just cant get his shot to the net, even when he is wide open it gets blocked.

  39. eddie eddie eddie on

Hi Im rex, Im ryan….we are “twins” we are also fans of “da rangers”…we are wearing our “throwback jerseys”

    we are also “annoying”

  40. you look at ottawa roster who the hell are half these guys yet they are 5th in conf with 42 pts.

hoffman o brien gryba smith kassian

  41. Carp, i don’t know who loses that Race but I know neither Pyatt or Hamr would actually win

  42. Doodie Machetto on

Lundqvist’s best save of the season, not counting that glove save that robbed a goal, because it probably should have been a goal.

  43. Czechthemout!!! on

For a team the preaches defense, its amazing the amount of good chances they give up.

  44. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, it wasn’t just the dive, he tried to swat it with his glove! not even the stick!

  45. The Penguins are admirable. Their idea of upgrading near the deadline is Iginla, Murray, and Morrow. The Rangers idea of upgrading near the deadline is Scott and Hamrlik.

  46. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

If Weirdcock takes a penalty, does he go to a penal facility?

  47. Doodie Machetto on

When the Rangers draw up plays on the PP, do they start from behind their own goal? Because they are just brutal with the puck in the zone.

  48. I see nothing has changed with this team, they are good at one thing, being consistently inconsistent.

  49. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

To be fair, Ottawa is a very good PK team. And the 2nd unit looks much better than the 1st.

  50. Is it really important to find out who’s the coolest athlete or greatest Ranger of all-time?

  51. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

If fans of both teams think their teams stink, does that mean both teams are playing good?

  52. Doodie Machetto on

Gravy, no this isn’t one of those “a good deal is when both sides aren’t happy” situations. They both are playing like my name.

  53. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

_Gravy, I thought the Rangers game was a commercial break for Pens updates_

    True Doodie…my mistake.

  54. That was actually the beginning of a sarcastic comment. Reason 74 the blog needs to be more iPhone friendly. Of course it doesn’t help that the future Mrs G is hauling ass down 684 as I type

  55. Admiral Akbar on

Sam: Chris Neil back on bench, Joe. That’s good news.

Joe: Yes Sam, that IS real good news!

    (Ugh…..)

  56. Turris taking on a defender wide with fast feet, getting to the net. Anyone in a white shirt watching that? DO IT.

  57. 11 shots on goal, leaky defense, yea, there stinking it up tonight, not going to get better with montreal and pens twice coming up.

  58. Had to happen. Nice to see what an actual patient, passing power play looks like.

  59. Czechthemout!!! on

It must really be nice to have someone who can shoot the puck from the point.

    Game over?

  60. Leetchhalloffame on

Great job by McDonut pushing Neil out of the way AFTER the goal was scored. Team full of wusses.

  61. eddie eddie eddie on

back seat of the bus…. back to the hotel aint gonna be pretty if this keeps up

  62. Down only 1-0 to a much better team. Gotta find a way to steal a point here in the third.

  63. thats the islanders. what does that have to do with us? have u watched this team at all this year?

  64. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I don’t care who wins in Philly, as long as it’s in regulation.

  65. gaborik is useless right now. just trade him i cannot stand him anymore. its getting so bad that i never expect him to do anything lately. i’m happy if he gets a shot off at this point

  66. eddie eddie eddie on

carp – you just know newbury will put this team on his shoulders…and lead them home…

  67. How can this team continue to employee the buffoon who runs the power play? Beyond pathetic.

  68. hard to watch. rangers skating in mud. gabby and richards are not even playing tonight…

they are not very entertaining which I could accept if they won more but what 15 shots after 2 periods..

stralman has taken a step back since his minutes have gone up, emminger has hold up fairly well.

  69. a much better team? they are missing speza, michalek, karlsson, anderson, who else? and were gonna be fighting just to tie them? cmon.

  70. Flyers, Leafs and Panthers have all blown 2-0 leads tonight. Probably playing against teams who’ve had one or two shots themselves though.

  71. Giannone: “has this game, through 40 minutes, gone according to how you drew it up?”

Yes they always draw up a game to be down 1-0.

  72. Ottawa just has speed that the Rangrs cannot handle. I guess Philly was more awful than we thought last night.

  73. carp, do u really think im serious with that comment? its called sarcasm. ya know, its hard to spot on the internet i know

  74. they have no powe and halpern and they still have to many slow foot bricklayers in the lineup.

g-d can they move boyle at the deadline please!!!

he stinks…miller with at least 2 bad turnovers a game, trade henrik get him out of this train wreck… to say they are offensively challenged is a understatement….

mza in the lineup next game; sit boyle, or newbury or pyatt, or asham..

really should trade gabby whatever they do does not work with him; right wing, left wing, different cernterman etc…he has been a total bust this year.. WOW. he is invincible many nights….

  75. not defending the power play, not at all, but when they can’t get the puck into the offensive zone, that’s execution, not the plan.

  76. _you guys really are awesome. like you’ve never seen a game before._

It is like they have seen too many Rangers games, and understand the levels of their scoring ineptitude.

For the record, I have not conceded this match. However, I understand the opposing viewpoint.

  77. gravy

are you lost. phil is 7 pts back isles are two why would u care ot tonight flyers need win

  78. Grabby, watch the game, not the letters on the back of the jerseys. Ottawa is better in the standings and in this game for a reason. One reason being their coach. They were better than the Rangers last year, too, but not in the nets.

  79. nothing has changed with this team, consistently inconsistent from game to game. If they do make the playoffs it will be the last day of the season for the 8th spot. Than it will be laughable watching them play the pens.

  80. Richards and Gabby are dead weight, trade them before the deadline while they still have any value.

  81. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

eric, are you concerned that the Isles are emerging?

    They scored by the way.

  82. LOL Kreider actually forcefully clears the crease and Henrik tells him to cool it. No wonder the kid is meshuggah,

  83. Yeah, that might happen amare. Richards is untradeable, and what do you think you’re getting for Gaborik at the bottom of his value, and how will you replace him next year? C’mon.

  84. could be costly night with isles and carolina rallying from two goals back. as good as tues was for rangers they give right back with loss and other scores

  85. I’m going to go back into the archives and check, or maybe google it, but I think the Rangers won that series.

  86. yea carp, did u notice how scared they were on the pp? they were playing like a team without any leadership. im not knocking their captain. not at all but somebody has to step up and make a play sometime and nobody wants to take charge it seems. until miller and kreider got on the ice, they were defending on a pp!! unacceptable.

  87. _not defending the power play, not at all, but when they can’t get the puck into the offensive zone, that’s execution, not the plan._

It is a combination of game-plan and execution.

  88. Even with his too frequent giveaways, the youngest kid (47) is twice the player Gabby is this year.

  89. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Just to make everyone feel better, Giroux got crunched from behind, and no one on the Flyers did anything about it.

  90. Jeez, Carp, thanks, I had no idea the Rangers won that series. I just think they were the better team, hardly a controversial opinion, but you know that so what’s going on here? Is it only a match-up problem, or are they just better? Is their coach any good, or was he a finalist for a reason?

  91. Kreider,,, having the best game of any forward, yelled at by goalie,……unbelievable

  92. Could it hurt to give Kreider and Miller a look on the power play of more than, say, 15 seconds? This isn’t Philadelphia.

  93. A guy who makes $7.5 million a year who skates around and doesn’t score, create any offense, hit anyone or go in the corners. How will we ever replace him next year?

  94. a guy who has been known to follow bad years with good years and score 40, who will be playing for his next contract. Want to replace him with another 0-15 goal guy, because, what, they don’t have enough of those yet?

  95. cooscoos March 28th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Even with his too frequent giveaways, the youngest kid (47) is twice the player Gabby is this year.

i’m with you and eddie now coos, ive had it with gabby its getting ridiculas now.

  96. CraigWeather on

Does this team understand that in order to create chances you can’t stay on the boards the whole FREAKING time?!?!?!?!?! I’m so sick of it!!!!!!!!

  97. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

The “move of the game” never seems to result in a goal.

  98. Papa Bear March 28th, 2013 at 7:57 pm
Heres a trade for ya’s: Gaborik for a “player never to be named” ……..addition by subtraction.

  99. CraigWeather on

This “team” sucks….. I’m sorry. Can’t watch anymore. Just a collection of players. No cohesiveness whatsoever.

  100. Czechthemout!!! on

The sad fact is that after so many games against this team, the “coach” has still not figured out a way to play and generate offense against this team of half AHL players. Amazing. Bishop has not faced one tough shot on goal yet.

  101. and the “playing for a contract” theory … and the, you’re not going to get another player capable of doing what he could still do theory.

  102. eddie eddie eddie on

if gabby is still a ranger…..that will be one bet i want to lose btw……

  103. CraigWeather on

Wow they actually moved the puck AWAY FROM THE PERIMETER….. It IS possible guys. I wonder how much of their crappy style of play is attributable to Tortorella…

  104. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

You guys are gonna be really surprised when Gabby scores, now arent ya??

  105. Potvin said he saw Nash with his hand fully bandaged earlier today, which he “wasn’t supposed to see”.

  106. Czechthemout!!! on

And there you have it. Bishop actually gets some real saves and LQ gives up a softie.

  107. A rare softy by Lund. Too bad, though, those were great chances at the other end. (And bad misses, it must be said.)

  108. eddie eddie eddie on

rangers can come back…they are only down 2…..not like its insurmountable

  109. This is why you don’t get excited about putting up a 5 spot on a bad Philly team.

    This roster needs an enema

  110. Slatsko Folkyerself on

They aren’t exactly household names scoring for Ottawa. Silver Bird, Adinnerjacket and some guy in a dress.

  111. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I’m with you, E3. We score one here on the PP, then we score another at some point. No problem-o.

  112. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I think if the Rangers score two more goals before Ottawa scores one, they will tie this game up.

  113. Slatsko Folkyerself on

    This roster needs an enema

And Sather is where you insert the soapy water.

  114. And the Islanders win. Shucks. The Senators are good. It’s a hellish matchup for us. Kind of like us last season.

  115. Not the first time ive heard Callahan being accused of diving/embellishing and Sam and Joe have called him out on it too. I dont respect that one bit.

  116. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

This is one of the better games Boyle has had this year. Thats a positive.

  117. Admiral Akbar on

    Carp,

Are you still thinking this TRAIN-WRECK of a “team” (Rangers, Blueshirts, Rags, Smurfs, etc.) will be making the playoffs??

Do you want to change your mind on that prediction?

  118. Here comes the stupid Alfie chant… Why did we pull so early? We cannot keep the puck away that long!

  119. Bad score, but excellent period by the Rangers. Didn’t get the goal, but sure could have.

  120. Hwirth wasnt around following that Philly game (shocker)….fully expect him tonight. So see you guys tomorrow.

  121. _you guys really are awesome. like you’ve never seen a game before._ to the blokes conceding this match following the second period.

    You were saying…

  122. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Eddie, no problem going through Pens, then Bruins, then Montreal to beat Anaheim in the finals. Simple.

  123. Every season but one under Torts we either miss playoffs or battling for the last available playoff spot… *great coach*, eh?

Cmon Torts lovers…come at me! :D

  124. eddie eddie eddie on

matty – piece a cake….might as well play the best if you want to be the best

  125. shocker, rangers need to score late and they have boyle on the ice and they do not score.

WHAT A SHOCK. BOyle could not be any more innefective if he was a plant for the opposing team…

how about some Gabby love. he looked great tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a joke, europansie of the highest degree.. he is softer then the donut I am eating at the moment….

  126. Because they’ve just had so much success every time you’ve pulled the goalie w 2 minutes left Torts. Way to go boys. With one game you’ve averaged those 5 goals and lost your playoff spot to the Islanders. Enjoy Canada

  127. Czechthemout!!! on

Yup. The last game was more about us beating a dead team walking than anything else. Nothing has changed. Still cant generate enough offense. Still cant figure out a way to play against this team.

  128. Rangers definitely still have a chance at winning the playoffs, they’re just not a good team

  129. did anyone really think we stood a chance with bostons finest brian butt boyle on the pp late in the game? tiki?

  130. the list of the culprits in order of culpability; richards, gabby, boyle, and then you go down from there.

btw el capitan has 15 points on the season with 9 goals, not exactly sniper like….

  131. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

    WBM (c)

    0) Boyle
    1) Gaborik
    2) Richards
    3) Hamrlik
    4) Lundqvist
    5) Callahan

  132. This Ranger team, easy to watch in the third, hard to swallow the result. If they can commit to that level of effort and skating and keep the D. jumping into the zone, they will do well. Such a big if, though — they’re still mailing it in early and getting interested late.

  133. It is in fact time to start blaming the coach. What else are we supposed to do? It is his fault as much as anyone else’s. Especially after the Rangers lose to the Habs, Jets and Pens x 2 in the next week. Another 5 game losing streak aint gonna be surmountable here.

  134. mza in lineup on sat.

btw you know you suck when your coach starts the 4th line to start the 3rd period down 1…

gabby should be gone.. adios ………………

  135. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Could extend it to the coaches, but he and Sully would be permanent members with Boyle.

  136. carp,

gabby and richards were on the #1 line and the top 2 culprits on my list. Nash has not been great but no where as bad as others….

  137. If it wasnt for the Flyers, we’d be the laughing stock of the Atlantic division. Let that sink in for a minute.

  138. eddie eddie eddie on

assuming gabby doesnt score another goal…he will have had a 15+ ….82/game year

  139. tonight you are talking, I am talking for the season.

hagelin had a bunch of turnovers tonight.

i was talking with my list of culprits for the season not tonight.

  140. Olga Folkyerself on

It is in fact time to start blaming the coach. What else are we supposed to do? It is his fault as much as anyone else’s.

Then why aren’t you blaming anyone else?

  141. Carp when people get all upset on the board you sometimes ask why we root for this team at all. I do not know the answer. They’re truly good about once every 20 years.

  142. Honestly there is no excuse to “we dont teach or practice offense” when youre getting shut out by Ottawa and when youre losing games to Florida. At some point the blame does go beyond the players.

  143. Well, bad as they’ve been, they’re still in eighth, and I don’t believe at all in the Islanders. So, yeah.

  144. Because Olga, I’ve been putting this all on the players all year long. And there’s also a bit of sarcasm in that comment.

  145. Czechthemout!!! on

The third was a pretty good period for them though. They opened it up a little and actually played better than Ottawa in the third. Hank gave up a soft goal in the third but if not for him, it would have been long over way before the third. They just dont ever even try to open it up unless they are trailing.

I have said it before and i will say it again, they will not win playing this system with the players they have. The coaching is just not there.

  146. Yes Carp all 5 of those guys were equally bad and Cally though he hustled was also pretty bad. Couldnt hold on to the puc, couldnt hold on to his stick, whiffing on shots.

  147. eddie eddie eddie on

how much are torts/cally to blame? …..torts cannot get his team to play hard…cally who tries to lead by example needs to start raising his voice in the room…..if he has been yelling…..they are tuning him out

  148. what players, Czech? Geez, can you beat the same drum all season?

Their top three players, two of them have sucked all season long. After that, they’re thin and soft. I’m not absolving the coach, but it’s wrong to think this team has so much firepower it should be playing run and gun.

  149. I noticed a good shove somewhere along the line. I think it was Kreider, of all people. These guys play like the Ursuline Nuns.

  150. ok Carp. If the cant cut Gabby, fire Torts and Slats, then how bout they fire their entire amateur scouting staff?

    ;P

  151. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, Carpy. A lot of the good teams are doing it with goalies that don’t cost $6-7M a year. Which, in the world of the cap, it allows more money to be spent up front. I don’t envy our GM in resigning Hank, but if he’s gonna do it, he has to start the thinking about it after this season.

Aside from Price, at $6.5M and MAF @ $5.0M, there are a bunch of lesser goalies on playoff teams at lesser cost doing an effective job. Guys like:

    Hiller, $4.5M,
    Tuuka, $3.5M
    Crawford, $2.67
    Howard, $2.67

I know it’s unthinkable, but at some point, when your goalie himself cannot ‘steal’ games, do you consider putting the dollars elsewhere??

    Just a hypothetical question…..

(disclaimer: just throwing this out there because in his next contract, ‘the king’ will probably get north of $8.0M for 5 or more. Is it worth it?)

  152. czechthemout. just do not agree with you. think they have some skill they just do not have..

guys that need to be moved or sat down please g-d; pyatt(slow and a zero), boyle(no explanation needed), gabby, and newbury/asham.

they literally do not have enough players who can skate, receive a pass, and get a shot on net in less then 3 seconds….

btw hamrlik stinks, not a bad idea but man he is toast…..

  153. Not smoking, Ursa — later, perhaps — but the Rangers buzzed well before and after the 2nd goal. No sag at all after it, which bodes well. Just saying what I saw. The previous periods, though, I can’t stand. All this playing behind the net, generating hardly anything and wearing down I don’t know who. Certainly not the Senators D. They need to knock that off and play in front of that net.

  154. Oh, Czech is back. Missed you after the dominant win.

The Senators are a hellish matchup for this team. Hellish. Have been for two seasons now. It’s bad. They have a lot of the intangibles we all want. And a GREAT coach.

  155. Olga Folkyerself on

Trade Lundqvist to the Black Hawks. You can have Crawford AND Emery. They wouldn’t be needing either one.

  156. torts has a gun with no bullets..

line combos, give me a break. he has played gabby in every possible way to help the woosie get going.

    richards should retire, NOW.

THEY ARE THE 2ND worse offensive team in the NHL, think about that….

the PP tonight was especially crisp and nice to watch. they have no guys who have big shots, not 1 guy on the roster….not 1 player has a bomb but hey let’s open it up……what a joke……..

  157. Slatsko Folkyerself on

They would have to be 0-48 to get Sather out.

So it could be done in one year?

  158. _Oh, Czech is back. Missed you after the dominant win._

    Over the terrible Flyers.

Impossible to miss you, as you are here every hour of the day.

  159. not so much that the Senators are a bad combination that the Rangers (almost predictably) came out after one of their best efforts in a while and didn’t bother playing

  160. Matty,,,, Fat Boy in the Jersey goal always took a discount to play with Jersey. What makes you think Hank wont take a discount to stay here???? ;P

  161. Papa, I think some (a lot) of their scouts should have been fired long ago … assuming you mean the guys who scout the prospects for the draft.

But the GM isn’t going to be fired, the coach isn’t going to be fired unless it gets a lot worse — and I think mediocre is what you’ll continue to see, not a lot worse — and they can’t just give away Gaborik. Not only that, with Richards having to be the second compliance buyout, they can’t buy out Gaborik. So he’s here next year. Maybe they move him next season, or at the draft, but his value’s really low right now. If you get rid of him, you have to replace the goals (not the ones he hasn’t scored, but the ones he was projected to score).

  162. Special Teams is clearly the problem. Namely, the PP. Hopefully, the creativity of Zuccarello will help spark this team on the PP…

Gaborik needs to score soon and will…a garbage goal or something…so many great chances…no results…

  163. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Hate to say it, Olga. Wouldn’t want to be the GM on this one, but is paying $8M for ‘the king’ a good expense? I don’t know. Is he as dominant as….Crosby or Malkin who earn that amount? I don’t know.

When we won the cup we had a ‘great’ goalie. Brodeur, I hate him, but he won and he is great. Many greats have won the cup.

But at some point is the cost hurting the rest of the team in the world of the cap?

  164. Everyone keeps referring to Richards as one of the top 3 players. I don’t care what he is being paid, and I know he is supposed to be one, but he has not been one of the Rangers top 3 players for a very, very long time. ..and he will never be one again! So can we stop referring to him as one of them please?

  165. carp, does this team make the playoffs and if so, is it any better than the 8-seed at which point they’re bounced in about 30 seconds

  166. SalmonJoe make Bishop the (“big body, Joe.” “Sure is, Sam.”) goalie sound like Ken Dryden.

  167. If I were the coach Richards and Gabby would have been benched after they let Ottawa play keep away on that first power play. That was abominable. Cant imagine what the bench must have been thinking to see their ‘stars’ not even be able to possess the puck on the pp.

  168. they are not buying out gabby. he has 1 year left on his deal…

no chance of the gabby buyout. nada…

special teams problems. no friggin way… the crips passing on the PP, the ease of getting the puck in the o zone, this offensive juggernaut cannot be stopped….

  169. Lloyd, I think mediocrity is what they are. So, yes, I still think they could make the playoffs as a 6-7-8. I don’t see them hanging with Pittsburgh or Boston in a series, no.

  170. Czechthemout!!! on

    Carp

I have not beaten that drum all year. Just the last month. They outplayed Ottawa tonight in the third when they opened up the game by sending in the defensemen deep and also using the entire ice and not the damn boards. If you cant see that than I cant help you. I have never advocated they play run and gun. But they don’t have an offensive game at all to speak of. There is no doubt about that. Yet you continue to defend this coach no matter what. How can you defend not coaching offense or the PP? Torts is a coach I was hoping for when Renney got canned so I don’t say what I say lightly. Torts needs to go! And the way he’s played this season, he an take Gabby and Richards with them!

  171. Sure, get rid of Asham and Haley and Bick and we can get all beat up as well as being shut out.

  172. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I wonder, Papa. After the Vezina. I wonder.

Yes, there have been a number of guys that took a discount to their actual FA value to play in Jersey. In NYC, not so much.

  173. This is a good team with a one dimensional coach who can’t figure out his ash from his elbow. Fire this clown now.

  174. Carp, the thing is, they’re looking at going about 11-5 to even get in at this point. You have to admit that looks like a serious long shot right now.

  175. “Richards was a top-3 player last year…”

Richards was only marginally better for a portion of last year, namely, the playoffs…

  176. Would any of you take a discount to stay? I wouldn’t.

I don’t think anybody in that room would.

And a lot of you were doing cartwheels when they gave Richards all that money. If you compare his time here with Gaborik’s, Gaborik looks like Stamkos.

  177. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

coos, do you think they were intimidated tonight?

I don’t think that was the case.

  178. Rangers played the first two as though they were afraid they’d lose 3-0, and what happened. Why they think they’re going to out-defend anyone with this roster, I have no idea. Flyers game, this third period, they stopped trying to not-lose and tried to win. I hope they stick with that idea.

  179. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

Lloyd, do you think the Isles or Canes are going to go 11-5 or better? I don’t.

  180. I don’t think they have to go 11-5, though. I don’t think any of the teams behind them or directly in front of them are going 11-5.

  181. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I was happy when Richards was brought in. Now, I am so depressed. He is not too good.

  182. _carp – THom is funny…..i dont mind him…even when he busts my chops_

I would never bust the lamb chops of eddie cubed.

  183. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Sather: “Hanky, how about a little 10%’er or more, huh?”

    Hank: “What?”

  184. Matty, I don’t think they were intimidated, but except for a few, they have no grit or energy. Opponents, especially in the playoffs, feast on that weakness.

  185. ThisYearsModel on

Well that was fun peeps. What guts. What an inspiration. Hard to swallow when the fans bring more to the table than the team they support. Fortunately, CARP and everyone here brings it every game. That is why I am always lurking here, helping to push the hit chart upwards.

  186. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

_hank clearly loves the city….i could see some discount he’d give_

    Like Prust?

  187. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

I don’t see that either, Carp. So then, the question, is a goalie worth $8M in the cap world?

  188. Olga Folkyerself on

Matty I’d give the King the money. He at least earns it most of the time. But Sather’s list is too long to name for giving big money to past-their-prime players. When will he learn that paying twice as much doesn’t get you twice as much?

  189. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Carp – you know him…I just watch him play on TV….just hoping he’d take a Tom brady type deal

  190. Czechthemout!!! on

    Manny

Actually, I was in an airplane during the game with Philly. You see I have a life also. Just so you know, I have been posting on this blog when Wienman ran it. Long before you ever did. I post here during wins and losses. But you already knew that. But see, you are a slimy little worm who likes to take shots at people you dont agree with. You are a major league Back End!

  191. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Coos, I was actually surprised that Ottowa didn’t go after someone, like run Hank or something like that. We can’t defend ourselves physically. Someone can, at some point, exploit that. I don’t look forward to playing Boston, Ottowa, or even Montreal and Winnipeg in the playoffs.

    I think we need…John Scott.

  192. Stay with Torts, Czech — he’s beginning to change, I think, what with McD and DelZ joining in the zone more often. And he’ll have no choice after the trading deadline if he still has this line-up, which I hope he does. And no choice but to put Zuch and/or Fast in now. Pyatt surely has seen his last shifts for a while. Does almost nothing.

  193. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

I think more than the $8M is how many years. He’ll be 32, so the over-35 status comes into play.

  194. Barring a miraculous turnaround, Rangers only shot at the playoffs to me is the 8-seed at this point and that means instant elimination. Even if they manage to back in going 8-7 or thereabouts, they’ll not gain enough ground to pass the teams ahead of them in the standings. (Don’t count out the Islanders either.) And I’m not convinced Washington doesn’t have a big run in them.

  195. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

You’d think, barring injury, the king is in his prime, the next 5 or so.

  196. How bout we all meet at Walters, (I don’t have a clue where it is) have a few doggies and talk about the good old days???

  197. TOI:

    Richards:16:58
    Kreider: 12:58
    Hagelin:14:56

    Boyle: 17:02

Way too much for Richards, he should be getting Heimlk minutes. Too little for Hags & Kreider. Boyle ridiculous! They lost 3 zip!

  198. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Gravy – Prust doesn’t model – own restaurants – hang with Johnny Mac – blah blah blah

Different bird altogether – do you think hank would feel at home in Denver? Or Edmonton?

  199. Lundqvist, on balance, hasn’t been that great this year but he’s absolutely the least of their problems right now

  200. This is a great blog where if you don’t suck up to the moderator, carp, he attacks you.

  205. Gravy, You Know You Want it Marty on

e3, Prust loved the team, became a real integral part of it, had a coach and teammates who loved him.

  206. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

So, how the heck did Duguay and Maloney play on the same team, the same era? Either Dave dies is hair gray or…..Ronnie must do a little bit of a touch up…

  207. Make an example to the rest of these slugs. Trade Hank …………………..we can get three number 1 picks who we could then turn into 3 more Jessimans.

  211. Reginald Dunlop on

well something better happen quick……..because as constructed this team is going to lose a seven game series to Pitt in 3 games……now I thought non-effort would no longer be a problem once Tom Renney was gone and Tortorella was the coach, now it seems to be a problem?? there is a lack of total toughness, which I thought was another of the genius’ strong points……….and he does have a lot more horses than Renney ever had……….and if we use 48 game season as reason, are we just writing season off???? wasting a year of Hank’s career??……….his postgame even sounds like a loser, aw shucks, didn’t get it done……..

  212. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Hanky, is a little pissed off. Kind of perturbed. Not thinking they are gonna make it. Wants to play right wing.

  213. Admiral Akbar on

Prust didn’t take a discount, why should Hank??

Btw – lets get Prust off the twitter feed – he’s the last thing most of us want to be reminded of when we have to watch this team this season.

  214. Carp, your 10:17 post is an affirmation of every post I’ve ever sent on every blog!

    Thank you,thank you,thank you!

PS, I also remind you that the way to beat the Rangers is simply to beat them up.

As the Big Whistle used to say, “Singer’s Midgets” and on this roster even the bigger players play small.

Did someone also say “mediocre”,is that like average?

  215. look, I know I’m beating a dead horse here but how does Brian Boyle get 17 minutes

  216. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Duguay: “I think Henrik is sensing, in the last month, that this team is not as good as last year’s team.”

Me: “Ron, are you getting paid for this?”

  217. There’s no reason for Hank to take a discount if his coach cant start teaching some offense to his team. It’s ridiculous honestly. “hey boys we are only down by one, play good defense your offense will come from that. I wont teach it or practice it with you, just use your natural skill.”

  218. Czechthemout!!! on

Hank is very pissed! As he should be. They suck in front of him way too many games. This training camp excuse is bullcrap. No one had a lot of camp! They cant score and wont as long as this idiot stubborn buffoon of a coach is sill here.

  232. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Sally only posts once a week – and it’s only to say – keep Prust on twitter

  233. ThisYearsModel on

The flaws are pretty bad here. Let’s face facts……Richards stunk for most of the season last year and all of it this year. Gaborik has to go. No way he stays after next year with Torts here. I don’t blame him. Different players need to be treated differently. Torts should read Ken Blanchard’s books. Henrik will not last long enough for this club to get to the top, not with what is happening in Boston and Pittsburgh. So……….trade Gabby for as good a return as possible………..fire Tortorella, buy out Richie this summer and trade the King this summer unless he really wants to sign on for 8 more years and stay. Start over next season. Torts’ shelf life has expired. Guess he needed to win last season.

  234. Richards had one of the best years of his career last year; did you not watch most of the games?

  235. Unless and until this team develops some consistent energy, we deserve to have Prust trolling and tweeting.

  236. Admiral Akbar on

I apologize for sounding inconsiderate, but who is “Sally” and why does this person have so much say in keeping MONTREAL CANADIEN BRANDON PRUST on the Ranger twitter feed???

Do we really need to see this guy tweeting compliments and roots for his current team, the Canadiens???

Prust is gone — let’s all get over it

KEEPING PRUST ON THE TWITTER FEED IS AN INSULT TO REAL RANGERS FANS!!!!

  237. Czechthemout!!! on

    Carp

My agenda was,is and always will be for the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup! They will not win playing the way they are told to play with this team by this coach. So if it makes you feel better, fine. What is your agenda? To defend him? To defend Sully?

  238. “Rick Nash didn’t have a shot on goal and only attempted one. He, Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards combined for two shots on goal. The player who led the Rangers in shots…..Chris Kreider with four.” Pathetic!! Maybe that’s why Brian “2 Points’ Boyle played over 17 minutes. Pathetic! They should ask Torts about all this, but they are fraidy scared of him.

  239. I hope nobody knows where I live because I’m about to defend Gaborik, who looked good in the third tonight. He has not been good enough this year, but he has also been streaky his whole career. The OT winner against Boston that he batted out of the air was lucky. There has been quite a bit of the opposite lately, though. If he has a hat-trick next game (just sayin’) he’s on a 30-goal normal season pace as opposed to the 20 he’s at now. So, yeah, he needs to pick it up, and he needs a bounce soon, but the idea of dumping him in a bad trade is one I hope nobody in the offices is seriously considering.

  240. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Come to think of it, they looked exhausted. Like in the Devils series last year.

  241. Oh they were tired all right. I believe they were tired. Why they were tired is another matter entirely.

  242. In the next couple of years all of their forwards were 5’11” or smaller and McIlrath, Noreau and Delisle all make the team. That could be very fun.

  243. Czechthemout!!! on

    Carp

I don’t root for anyone on the Rangers to fail, ever! You were not here on this blog when I battled against a bunch of Renney lovers who laughed at me when I suggested Torts was a great option as coach. Several of them who laughed at Torts are still here and are now defending him.

I call out poor play and poor play, lack of effort and dumb coaching.

  244. Olga Folkyerself on

“If he has a hat-trick next game (just sayin’) he’s on a 30-goal normal season pace as opposed to the 20 he’s at now.”

Eddie, you’re the math major… what’s this mean?

  245. Czechthemout!!!

WRONG. Your agenda is to fire John Tortorella because you think he is terrible.

  246. This game was hard to watch. Just bring up McIlrath, Thomas, Yogan, Jean and others? Just let them play/get experience and give Columbus a better draft pick?

  247. Of course theyre exhausted. Girardi and McD are playing hurt and playing 25 minutes a night. Hank has played a majority of the games. No camp to condition themselves. But so what. Neither did any other team.

I cant imagine them not doing anything come the deadline. Taking everything into account Peter Laviolette has been more successful with his squad in Philly than Torts has been here in NY. There’s no reason this team should be fighting the Islanders to be in the playoffs.

  248. NYR_FAN

Do you think Torts is a good coach? Honestly? You dont blame Torts at all for what we’re seeing here?

Again, only ONE year since Torts became a coach this team put a decent season together… all other years were mediocre at best…

  249. Ottawa is a good team, having a bunch of youngsters come up and do their jobs and buy into the coach’s system is very impressive. But theyre a team this Rangers team shouldnt have nearly as much trouble as they have had.

  250. I do, honestly, think Torts is more than just a GREAT coach. He is probably the best coach of the Rangers of my lifetime…

Who was better in the last 30 years? Mike Keenan? Espo? Slats himself?

  251. I, btw, was one of the few remaining Renney supporters at the time. He was being blamed for absolutely everything then. Those two many men penalties every game brought some interesting comments from many here. After that game in dallas where there was a closed door meeting it was obvious a change was needed. I think we are nearing that time again.

  252. Torts’ new mildish demeanor tells us that he’s tried everything motivation wise and now realizes he does not have the horses, but feels that if Richie and Gabby come to life, they can at least compete and get a playoff round. There’s always a method to his madness, IMO.

  253. Admiral Akbar on

    Carp,

Then please plea with your Ruler, Sally, to allow us to keep Twitter feed limited only to current NHL’ers who play for the NY Rangers.

I’m serious, I’ve actually shut this page off when I see Prust trolling about garbage like where his fans will be “watching the game tonight” or his learning of the French language. It’s an insult, and makes it look like we are living in the past.

It is a shame that on a blog such as this where there are so few trolls, that the one persistent troll happens to be a former player (who skipped town in favor of more money)’s twitter feed.

I’m sure Sally is a reasonable sort, and would not object to the wishes of most of your loyal fans who also happen to be diehard ranger fans.

  254. Eddie Eddie Eddie on

Olga – if gabby gets a hatty next game he will have 12 goals… How many have they played now?

  255. darntwinblades on

Carp – to the extent that anyone is a jerk here, from time to time, the example is set
at the top. That’s where the stink starts – just ask Al McGuire:-).
And Thom gets a warning cause he has the nerve to give it back to your shoe-shine boy,
who has been going hard after Thom for a while now, in typical “Let’s-all-gang-up on the
    new guy” bonehead fashion.

The Rangers outta the playoffs? Ridiculous, you said; absurd you said.
You even called someone out for pointing out the harsh reality of an essentially .500 record since
    last March.

With a handful of stars out for the Sens, who played the Rangers tough last year (what’s so hard to understand RCarpini?- Merton said Ottawa better everywhere but goal last spring, a view shared by many observers-not-beat-writers) the still power-play clueless got hosed again.
The coach, who has had many or the right answers, has also had many of the wrong ones,
just like the GM and scouts – all adding to the mediocrity.

I think Gabby is still fighting the surgery, and will for a while, and no one taken seriously is demanding a trade for a 15-goal scorer. My own wish, like last year, would be something along the lines that Philly got from the Kings for Richards – two potential all-around top six youngsters like Simmonds and Schen(?)

And if (I think the bidding is now at “I’d make that trade 350-out-of-a-hundred times; no-brainer
indeed, like so many organization decisions for decades) The Rangers are not a demonstrably better offensive team (not more entertaining, as they are when he has the puck often) at the end of 2014, then that will be another Drury/Gomez/Redden special, nothing more.

And folks, please stop the “We all thought this was a cup contender” garbage.
Many of us, a minority, maybe, but not all that quiet a one, said from the end of last year’s playoffs this squad, with its front office and coach, would be hard pressed to be better than last year’s, Rick Nash added or not. We repeated it at season’ start; we repeat it after a mirage of a win like the one in Philly Tuesday (no, not anywhere near a “dominant” win to anyone more than
a SarasoTa Fan College grad). I warned, Lloyd warned, Matty, I think, and a few others said so specifically Tuesday night – do NOT get all excited by this win. Let them SHOW they can play like this in the upcoming gauntlet. Then y’got something to build on, but only then.

    Away from ledges….

  256. I think next year’s team will be much better. Probably not 94 better but top 5 next year. They may not make the playoffs, but they’ll be good next year and it will be due to Torts and his camp and the experience that Miller and Kreider get this year as well. Why not bring up a few more players to get them ready for next season?

Wrong!!! But your agenda as it always is,is to suck up to the hierarchy of this blog or some poster you think is glib.

I dont think Torts is terrible. In fact from what I’ve learned about him in the last few years, he is a very good person. He is not the coach that I thought we would be getting.

  258. Lev,,, Ranger youngsters buy into their coach’s system too…..Maybe that be part of the problem???

  259. Looked like the same old bad Rangers to me. I’m not sure what to say. They can’t play 60 minutes of inspired, good hockey, and their PK has really let them down this year. They seem to have a PK in the top 10 of the league year in year out, and this just magnifies their lack of goal scoring when they are giving up power play goals in 7 of their last 8 games.
Lundqvist is always pissed after a loss, especially tonight. He can’t let up more than 1 goal a game on this team right now. Who thinks he wants out after his contract is up and on a team that can score, and relieve the pressure he is facing now on a nightly basis?

  260. Speaking of good coaching, did anyone notice the Sens waiting out all those Rangers’ block attempts? Certainly on the power play shooting gallery they scored on, and definitely on the second when Girardi went to one knee — the shooter simply held the puck until Girardi had slid off to the side. Lundqvist will want that one back, true, but where was the D 101 of keeping the shooter wide, playing the pass and letting Lund. have the shot?

    Matty: interesting re: Hank.

NYGiants in similar fix with ELI: huge cap hit for a guy who is league average most
regular seasons, and great in an occasional playoff. Just miss playoffs some years, absent the dough to have a guy or two make a key play or two in December, ’cause Eli has it in his bank.
(Think the Gs don’t win again in Eli’s time, though they are validated by the two Lombardis, and have better front office staff, relatively speaking).

If Rs had a GM I trusted, I would seriously think of deal; but with current mngmnt, no confidence they would do a smart, on-the-run rebuild (similar to current reservations about trading MG).

My own guess, good for a long time, is that they will never win with Hank, because he’d have to be Vezina every year, almost every game, to win with Glen’s architecture.

Last year’s extraordinary whole-is-greater squad mighta been best chance, and I, for one, thought they did better than they had any chance to do….

    Keep up the brave commentary:-)…

  262. Norm, in the 1st period Neil was on the ice opposite Gabby every shift. Took him right out of the game. Good in-game coaching by McLean.
