Rangers recall Kreider from Connecticut, assign Haley to Whale

from the NYR:

Assign forward Micheal Haley to Connecticut (AHL)

NEW YORK, March 20, 2013 –New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has recalled forward Chris Kreider from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), while forward Micheal Haley has been assigned to Connecticut.

Kreider, 21, has registered a point in six of eight games since his assignment to Connecticut on February 28, tallying six goals and one assist over the span. His six goals in the month of March lead the team, while his seven points rank third on Connecticut over the span. Kreider has registered 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points, along with 65 penalty minutes in 42 games with the Whale this season. He is tied for sixth on the team in goals, and ranks third on Connecticut with five power play goals.

Kreider returns to the Rangers, where he has registered one goal and one assist in 11 games this season. He tallied a point in consecutive games, including his first career regular season point with a goal on February 5 at New Jersey and his first career regular season assist on February 7 against the New York Islanders. He made his NHL regular season debut in the season opener on January 19 at Boston.

The Boxford, Massachusetts native was originally selected by the Rangers as a first round choice, 19th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Haley, 26, has skated in nine games with the Rangers this season, having made his Blueshirts debut on March 5 against Philadelphia. He returns to Connecticut where he has registered nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points, along with 158 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating in 56 games this season. He ranked fifth in the AHL with 18 fighting majors at the time of his recall on March 5. He also led the team and ranked 11th in the league in penalty minutes, and was tied for seventh on the Whale in goals.

The Guelph, Ontario was signed by the Rangers as a free agent on July 1, 2012. He was originally signed by the Islanders as an undrafted free agent on May 19, 2008.

  2. that was me with the “clown” label, Lev. It’s OK, you can say so. I also admitted I was wrong about the guy. I had never seen him be anything but a clown and he was not that at all since his callup.

  3. Gravy, You Know You Want Some Marty on

At the very least, we won’t have 10 posts from stuart about Kreider after every game.

  4. I hope he succeeds as well, Carp. I just doubt he is defensively responsible enough to be on a team that usually wins by 1 goal.

  5. I know he will eventually. But hope he doesn’t feel the expectations on him. Hope he’s ready for this and he stays.

  6. Of course, if he scores one every once in a while his defense will be OK, Manny. And maybe with the right linemates he will have the freedom Miller’s been getting.

  7. If he wants to stay I hope he’s been watching video of Hagelin and Miller. Because those kids bring it.

  8. Sioux-per-man on

We won’t see any Gordie Howe Hat Tricks out of him.

But I really think Miller & Kreider can play off each other. Just imagine if you put Hags with them?

  9. 6’2”, eyes are blue…. cooky, cooky, cook-ca-choo. has anybody seen The Kreider?

  10. It’s possible, Carp. I haven’t seen many people more highly touted and more completely lost on the ice than Kreider. And I want him to succeed. We need him to be a top 6 guy.

He just seems, to me, to have Semin and Ovechkin written all over him. Guys with enigmatic (that word) potential. Only difference is Kreider doesn’t play the size and doesn’t have the finishing power.

But he’s been crashing the net a lot. So maybe that helps up here.

  11. Sioux-per-man on

Hags is like bacon. He looks good with anything!!!

Seriously he makes a difference on every line Torts puts him on.

  12. Alright, let’s hope he understands what it takes. He sounds like a smart kid. According to Torts, while he started to score goals down in Hartford there were still certain things they were concerned about. But the last two games, the reports were good. They need to him to play well and contribute.

  13. Sioux-per-man on

Manny – don’t put him in the Russian box.

Kreider is a workaholic. He will never quit. He’s humble. Has talant.

But hey if he puts up a 100pts like OV, and makes our team into a playoff team like Semin has for the Hurricanes…….. I guess I’m ok with that :)

  14. It has been reported, ilb. Yes, best wishes to him. They do wonderful things with that particular cancer now.

  15. Hagelin-Stepan-Callahan

Here is my point. Miller and Kreider have a tough time being on the same line since they are both LW’s naturally. Gaborik can slide down with Boyle and Kreider, go back to the Right Side that he’s used to and Miller can slide up and play wing with Richards and Nash.

This of course assumes that Kreider can handle it defensively. If he is horrible defensively then put him on a line with Richards and Nash and swap Miller and get some GREAT Defensive pairing out there.

  16. I’m not saying he’s Russian, Sioux. It just happens that those two guys are Russian. He can be like Boyle too if you like…..

  17. If you add Kovalchuk and Datsyuk to that lust, that would be a very impressive Russian box:-)

  18. He’s not gonna let them catch him no – never gonna catch the Midnight Kreider!!!
I’m ecstatic have lots of faith in him ..I understand your cautious optimism Manny, but I think the kid gets it,and wants it ,and that’s all good stuff bud

  19. So young players can’t play in this league until the learn how to play defense and,,,, they have to learn defense in the AHL?. There have been plenty of young talented players who learned the art of defense while breaking in at the NHL level. You drinking that Torts Cool Aid with Ice???

So yesterday he couldn’t, but today he could? What changed? Did he have a good practice this morning? I don’t think he had a game yesterday?

  20. It’s true Papa. The Whale haven’t played since Sunday (a win over the Springfield Falcons).

  21. Sioux- great line about Hags and bacon…sure you didn’t steal that line from fat guy? :)

  22. _It’s possible, Carp. I haven’t seen many people more highly touted and more completely lost on the ice than Kreider. And I want him to succeed. We need him to be a top 6 guy._

_He just seems, to me, to have Semin and Ovechkin written all over him. Guys with enigmatic (that word) potential. Only difference is Kreider doesn’t play the size and doesn’t have the finishing power._

He has Semin and Ovechkin written all over him? He seems enigmatic? After a whopping 2 months in the NHL. You cannot be serious.

Highly touted and completely lost? He looked so lost that his organization has recalled him after a brief stint in the minors.

If Kreider achieves half the personal accomplishments in his career that Ovechkin already has, he will be a success.

  23. Cross Check Charlie on

I’ll wait and see what we get the second time around and how Torts uses him. If the kid pots a few goals and Torts let’s him make a mistake without benching him then the team might be in good shape. If he’s only going to get Haley’s 4 minutes a game then I don’t see where that will help.

  24. I also like that they bring up the Midnight Kreider after a few wins as opposed to a desperation move.

  25. I think, in games, Ovechkin was one of the fastest players ever to reach the 100 or 200 goal mark. No one talks about it because a lockout got in the way of it being impressive with calendar dates.

  26. Sioux-per-man on

We all have such High expectaions for Kreider. The rookie version of Nash. size, speed, skill, all at 21.

He has more skill than Boyle, but they both come from BC. So maybe they can get something clicking.

If Kreider kind of reminds me of watching Toews in college. Young, talented, sneaky good, but Toews could “WILL” the puck into the net. If Kreider can find that will, he is going to be sneaky good. Let’s hope he hits the ice flying!!!

  27. As long as no one expects him to be a PPG, he should be ok. Otherwise he’ll enter the WBM in a heartbeat.

  28. Sioux-per-man on

Kreider has 2 NCAA Championships & a Gold medal. Now let him add a Stanley Cup Champion to the list of accomplishments!!!!

  30. Hope Haley doesn’t bust his knuckles on AHL knuckleheads. Don’t waste your best drives on the practice range. I think we’ll need him yet.

  31. If he passes on the opportunity to finish his checks, I’ll be very disappointed.

  32. Allman brothers” midnight Kreider” e3 wondering if a trade may be near ? Carp ? Nice work on the big number with coos and papa last night Eddie…

38 pts left on the table.

  36. Before his first game, Equipment manager needs to put some Tabasco sauce in his jock strap. That should get him nice and ornery….

  41. I know it’s semi-irrelevant but, can you imagine being a fan of the CT Whale? you lose Kreider and get back Haley? That totally changes your team. Immediately.

  42. Sioux-per-man on

E3 – I was wondering the same thing.

We may be show casing the Kreider or Gaborik for the Kings.

Or seeing if Kreider can play Gaborik’s spot on the top line.

But that would be a negative thought…….. and we don’t have room for those in here!!!

  46. Sioux-per-man on

Manny – I wonder if the Whale can play Fasth and Lindberg once they are done in the SEL this year?

They are both having GREAT years in Sweden.

You last couple posts on Kreider be an enigma, Semin,etc.. Are rediculous! You know that, right. Seriously? How can you say that after 1 1/2 months of mostly limited time primarily on the fourth and third line?

You say this about a kid who has won 2 Ncaa titles and a World junior championship. But see he wasnt just passenger on those teams, he was a major difference maker. He than followed that up with an incredible performance in the playoffs. He was the best forward in the Devils series and one of the better ones in the Caps series. He got hurt early in the AHL season and played on a misdiagnosed bone chip in his ankle. There is no doubt that that effected his play. He needs to be given some rope by the coach just like he has done with Miller, a kid who I love and think has the makings of Mike Richards in him. But the fact of the matter is that The Kreiderhas earned more rope from the coach than Miller has by virtue of last lears playoffs performance. Problem is, he hasnt recieved it yet. Maybe this time he will.

  48. e, we had fun. I was afraid to notice Papa hanging over the side of the boatthe last 75 posts, singing to the sharks, but he hung in there like the breakfast of champions. And we got some late help. Thanks to those who know who they are!

  49. Yea, Sioux. I hope so. Lindberg has been out of his mind over there (from what I read of course. Haven’t flown over). Fast, well, I hope he’s like his name development wise.

  50. Yea, Czech, well, Chris Drury won a Little League World Series. And I won Mock Trial at my Law School.

  51. eddie eddie eddie on

I’m sorry, did I break your concentration? I didn’t mean to do that. Please, continue, you were saying something about best intentions. What’s the matter? Oh, you were finished! Well, allow me to retort. What does Marsellus Wallace look like?

  53. “Is it the real Turtle Soup, or only the mock?
Is it for all time, or simply a lark?
Is it Granada I see, or only Asbury Park?”

  54. Kreider, defensively, has earned nothing except a spot on the bench and a roster slot in the AHL.

  55. If this were a longer season and I were the opposition, I would give Kreider a black and blue welcome to the NHL.

  56. Czechthemout!!! on

I am surprised at you again. You do realize that Cris Drury had a very successfull career way before he ever joined the Rangers, right? I mean do you just post stuff without knowing your facts? And I mean no disrespect.

Drury was an incredibly clutch player throughout his career with the Avs and The Sabers as well. Sather is the guy who decided to pay him top 3 money even though he was a top Six player.

Are you implying that you are not a succsesfull Attorney?

  57. Czechthemout!!! on

Boyle, offensively has earned nothing but a spot with the Black Aces. Whats your point? Kreider has as many points as Boyle in a fraction of the TOI and games played.

    Stagger Lee threw seven
Billy swore that he threw eight

    Stagger Lee told Billy,

Stamkos was interviewed after he scored EN to beat Philly (i think) and i heard fastest (incorrectly)…..but to be fair, I’m losing my hearing (almost a 10 db loss) and will need hearing aids sooner than later…

  60. Czechthemout!!! on

In fact, Boyle has earned nothing but full time duty with the Black Aces or as I call them scrub brigade by his overall play this year.

  61. It was a joke, Czech.

I get what you’re saying about judging Kreider but so far I have seen a very sloppy, confused and lazy defensive player. It scares me. He might be fine on the Flames or in an open Lightning style system but that isn’t where he is playing. He has to adjust. A great hockey player would. Look at Crosby, the guy can play ANY style of hockey better than anyone.

  62. I seriously can’t figure out how some of youse are so tough on Kreider. Seriously, the kid has literally no NHL experience and yet people are all over his carcillo…give the kid a chance…geez!

  63. Czech – at no point have I brought up Kreider’s points or Boyle’s points. I am talking about being defensively responsible on a team that wins by 1 goal in most games.

  64. eddie eddie eddie on

czech – Boyle has more points (2) this year than the entire combined Hall of fame

  65. I don’t think anyone said to not give him a chance, Staal. A bunch of us are cautiously optimistic that he can learn to play defense enough to help us *this year* . Other than that people are between way overly optimistic and ready to name him pope.

  66. As a fellow Irish Catholic with many siblings, I love the Boyler more than most here. But even if he were my brother, I move him down 2 line 4. Some guys prefer line 4.

  69. Wait a flipping second here- did I not read right here on this blog that Boyle is unleading all rangers in scoring at the present time ?? I KNOW he leads the team in T.LO.I !!!

  70. eddie eddie eddie on

boyle, i think, is tied with eminger for unleading the rangers in not not scoring

  71. I’d just as soon see Boyle center Nash and Gabby as Richards. (He ducks as he says this)

  72. eddie eddie eddie on

looks like TGO scored 300 faster than Stamkos scored 200…..that is insane…..he was pretty good

  73. You guys realize that saying The Kreider is not “there” defensively (as I am saying), which you translate to me lambasting the kid as a bust, is the same as you all anointing him as the top line savior of the team.

  74. eddie eddie eddie on

  76. Stagger Lee went home
    And he got his .44

Stagger Lee went to the bar room
And he stood across the bar room door
    Said, “Now nobody move.”
    And he pulled his .44

    “Stagger Lee,” cried Billy
“Oh, please don’t take my life.
    I got three little children
    And a very sickly wife.”

  77. I think eminger makes very few mistakes…by the time he gets into position it’s time to go back to the bench

  78. eddie eddie eddie on

Boyle has been playing much better for the last few weeks or so…..but a 4th liner he is…..

  79. Czechthemout!!! on

I am not saying you brought up Boyle. It is called a double standard that Torts has with some players that he doesn’t have with others. And before you start accusing me of saying Torts hates Kreider or something, please don’t because that is not what I am saying. But If you you are going to say that Kreider doesn’t belong in the lineup for whatever reason, please be more intellectually honest about Boyle. I have not read a single post yet from you calling for Boyle to be benced or sent down for ineffective play. That is all I am saying.

  80. eddie eddie eddie on

I think Nasher will get at least 15 more goals this season…which equates to almost 43 per/82 game season….not too shabby….

gabby will be lucky to hit double digits this year, sadly….

  81. eddie eddie eddie on

czech – again, you fail to realize that Boyle is one of the team unleaders in scoring with 1 goal and 1 assist….

  85. Czechthemout!!! on

Oh and Boyle has not at all been defensively responsible this year. Boyle has to be ” defensively responsible” because he sucks in all other aspects of hockey. He cant skate, pass, shoot, fight, nor is he great at face offs. And when saying Boyle is defensively responsible what does that mean? He blocks shots? So what. A lot of players block shots. What else does he do? He is too slow to skate with his man and effectively, cover him. So what else does he do?

  86. tomb – that is a pathetic quote. There’s more to this whole Kreider story that has so far met the eye, me thinks.

  87. eddie eddie eddie on

if gabby can float all game why cant kreider?….Not like gabby scores much…this year anyway

gabby scored goals in 5 games
Kreider scored a goal in 1 game.

  104. Yea. That was my point, Carp. They are clearly afraid to level any suspension that will be appealed. Sweet iron fist, Shanaban.

  105. nice to see Kreider back up

Okay…. I’ll sum up the rangers dilemma right. Trading for Nash was oh so appealing. What’s not to like about this guy? He’s a beast! But, in doing so…. You just gave up 2 of your HOMEGROWN players. Dubi and Artie were capable of sliding up and down the lineup and Dubi was as fiery as they come. BOTH were very responsible in the defensive zone as well. Then you lose Prust…. We’ve gone over this ad nauseum so there’s no sense in going down that road again. All 3 of these guys were great at cycling the puck down low and forechecking the crap out of opposing teams. Losing fedetenko and Mitchell hurt as well, but I’m okay with their departure. Bottom line is this- we had a good thing going… We had homegrown players who knew the system, wanted to be here…etc. We traded our cake batter for icing. Until we get the right ingredients… We cant make another cake and the icing by itself will be pointless. We weren’t deep enough to make the trade to begin with. It’s that simple. We have the icing… But we need some freaking cake :)

  174. That’s awesome Craig. Well said. Now can you make the weather a bit better or at least more even keeled and rational?

  175. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Hey, Craig, I miss Dubie and Artie and it was great having them be home grown. Yep, they knew the system.

I gotta say, at $4m, Dubie was, for what he scores, pret-t-t-t-t-ty overpriced. His play away from the puck was worth a premium, but not that much. And Artie, another great guy. For the chance to have a superstar, which we now, kind of have, I’m ok losing him.

The problem was all the other stuff Sather did. Who knew he was gonna not resign or get rid of: Prust, Feds, Mitchell. Those guys, while not home grown, knew the system and we might be a little more ahead of where we are now had we not lost them.

    Prust saying.

  176. I really, really think the trade made us better and helped us have a more realistic window in which to win the cup. Last year was freakish. Everything went right for us. It was the most fun I have ever, ever had rooting for a team. Ever. (Even more than rooting for the Hartford Whalers!) We took a step back to take a huge step forward. Nash is the real deal. We have so many good pieces around him and so many pieces that are supposed to be good around him. Once that clicks, and provided Hank is here, we have a real 3 year window in which to win a cup. Finally.

  177. Stranger Nation on

    Dubi – 1 goal in 19 games, (-4) with shotting% @ 3% at $4M

    cycle, cycle, cycle

    refresh, refresh, refresh

    Artie – 8 points in 22 games (-8), none in last 5

    cycle, cycle, cycle

    refresh, refresh, refresh

  178. Haha. Had to go back to see what idiocy you were vibin’ with Matty. Love it. Vibe.

And, for the record, I totally agree. Losing Mitchell was so much bigger than we though. At the time we kind of blinked thinking, oh, weird. Well Halpern will be better. He’s not. Prust, well, that’s my guy. He’s borderline a hero of mine and even I wouldn’t give him 4 years at that cost. Fedotenko has had a rough year in Philly but hey, they suck (except Simmonds who absolutely RULES, did you *see* him Light up Volchenkoc when Volchenkov lined him up and then WAVE as he skated away!?) but I bet he would be a great piece on this Rangers squad. So responsible.

  179. I don’t know how we do it…. But the bottom 6 (with the exception to JT) need to be replaced one by one. Do you trade gabby to speed the process along? I’m SO split on that! I want a bunch of Curtis glencrosses!!

  180. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Yea, Manny. Agree. And Simmonds is a player. A real player. That was a smart deal for Philly.

I guess one of the differences between ALL the guys we lost and the addition of Halpern, Ass-em, Pie-hat, etc. They don’t “feel” like Rangers to me. I wonder what the players in the locker room think.

Last year, as a fan, felt like they were a cohesive, team first group. Prust (love the guy), Feds, Mitchell, of course, Dubie and Artie. Team first.

I’m not feeling that…yet…from this year’s additions. Perhaps it just me.

  181. Oh, I don’t feel it at all, Matty. Neither does Mrs. Manny. She misses last years squad which she described as “lovable.” And she’s right. I wanted them to succeed SO badly. They did succeed but a cup would have been unreal. I don’t know if I could have emotionally handled it. I might be homeless and bumbling in some gutter somewhere had they won. The world just wouldn’t make sense anymore. It would be that level of “awesome.”

There really isn’t enough that can be said about Prust. Ever.

  182. Matty…. Couldn’t agree more… Feels like the NY Strangers. Simple really…. They don’t play with any snarl… hardly ever drop the gloves / stand up for one another…and most of their breakouts are sloppy!

  183. Stranger Nation on

Craig – bottom six is deep six though I give the rook a pass and Boyle has woken after benching #2

Richie and Gabby have to produce

  184. Yup, Stranger. Until those guys produce the rest is pointless. If Nash, Richards and Gaborik produce at the level they are capable of (and Nash does most of the time) then we can start yelling at the little guys.

  185. And here’s the sad reality of it all- when were wondering if Zuccarello will return…. What does that say? He’s the opposite of what we need. He’s what joe Thornton would call “soft.” And the fact is if Joe said that about us this year…. guess what? I’d agree. Soft, sloppy…constantly pinned/running around in our own zone. About the best defensive play I’ve seen from this team was yesterday’s 3rd period against the devils. Why can’t we ALWAYS stand other teams up at the blue line? We did that all last year!!!

  186. Yea, they were very “Rangers” for a spell last night. That was nice to see. I really am intrigued by the idea that Kreider is going to come up here and the Rangers are going to attempt to open it up a bit on the offense (at least two lines of more “open” offense).

  187. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Manny, nice hit by Simmonds. Rock. I am not too sure we have many guys that could give it like that.

And, yeah. Last year was special. Some great moments for sure. One of the great moments was Richard’s goal vs. Wash late in 3rd. It almost felt like fate was gonna carry us through to the finals.
It was the kind of year that has most of us yearning for more. Almost felt like ’94-type feel, but THAT team was expected to win Presidents cup, last years was not considered early on.

Funny thing, Las Vegas odds, THIS year had us pre-season 2nd favorite to win The Cup, at 3-1. Pret-t-t-t-t-y low odds. Not so sure anyone would take that now!

  188. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Manny, I was at the game. It was fairly intense. There were many interesting aspects to it, but none more than a quiet confidence that Nash would lead us. Can’t describe it because we haven’t had anyone like him since..well…and not to compare…but Mess. He can carry the team. He makes others play better just because they know there’s always a chance he can break it open. And he always needs to be watched because he truly is lethal.

There was some camaraderie on the ice displayed by our team. Yes. Perhaps the team is coming together some. But, I don’t think any of us can expect the ‘feel’ like last year.

I mean, even something silly, but we all saw it. When the guys, last year, would leave the ice, they always had a pattern. Last three were Prust, Boyle, MDZ. With their silly fist hitting high fives. Every win. Same thing. That’s all pretty much history. Just a little thing, but it ‘felt’ like more of a team last year.

Kreider must play on top 2 lines. You cannot take a defensively challenged 1st year sniper and put him on checking line.

Problem is you can’t have him with Richard or Gabby because of their defensive challenges.

Be very interesting to see the lineup tomorrow night

  193. Awesome, Matty. Thanks for the insight. I really hope you’re right.

When Nash has the puck, anywhere on the ice, and you’re in the building, it’s magic isn’t it!? I go to very few games but I have seen them this season and man, the whole building starts buzzing wherever he is.

  194. Matty"Monster Nash"Boy on

Yes, Manny. He’s quite creative and hard to stop. Boston seemed to use their size well against him, but that’s it. And the building does buzz.

Last night, to be fair, when Kovie toughed the puck, it was the same thing. He was real creative, had a hard, mostly unscreened slapper. Made some really impressive moves that were giving our ‘d’ fits.

I’ll take our guy, though. :)
