Official word on Chris Kreider being sent to Connecticut Whale

from the NYR:

NEW YORK, February 28, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned forward Chris Kreider to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Kreider, 21, has registered one goal and one assist for two points in 11 games this season. He tallied a point in consecutive games, including his first career regular season point with a goal on February 5 at New Jersey and his first career regular season assist on February 7 against the New York Islanders, after missing the previous five games, including four games due to injury. He made his NHL regular season debut in the season opener on January 19 at Boston. Kreider returns to Connecticut, where he has registered five goals and seven assists, along with 57 penalty minutes in 34 games this season.

The 6-3, 230-pounder established an NHL record for most postseason goals (five) and points (seven) by a player before skating in a regular season game during the 2012 playoffs. Kreider tied for first among NHL rookies in goals and power play goals (two), second in game-winning goals (two) and power play points (two), and ranked fourth in points during the playoffs. He also tied for third on the team in playoff goals, first in power play goals and second in game-winning goals. Kreider made his NHL debut on April 16, 2012, at Ottawa in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, becoming the first player to win an NCAA title and make his NHL debut in that year’s playoffs since 1990.

The Boxford, Massachusetts native was originally selected by the Rangers as a first round choice, 19th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

stuart, like it or not, Kreider has 2 points and 5 shots in 11 games, averaging over 10:00 TOI.

If he was a C, you could argue playing him over Boyle. If the team showed more jam, you could argue him playing over Asham or Bickel.

Stranger, my comment on Duchene was in response to Doodie’s that O’Reilly wants to be paid more than him.

  2. Doodie Machetto on

Stranger, Duchene is very relevant because they are both centers, they play for the same team, they’re the same age, and they were both up for new contracts at the exact same time. Honestly, I can’t think of anyone who would be more relevant to the O’Reilly negotiations other than O’Reilly himself.

And for people saying “well Duchene is averaging a point per game right now” that’s all well and good, except Duchene signed his contract coming off of a 28 point season in 58 games (48 point pace), while O’Reilly had 55 in 81 and is approaching an elite level in his two way play. The fact that he wants more money than Duchene is totally justified. The problem is the salary scale. Statsny got WAY overpaid, which led to Duchene being overpaid, which leads to O’Reilly wanting to be overpaid.

Stepan has had better numbers than Duchene but there’s no way Sather gives him 3.5 on his second contract. It’s called a salary scale, and the Avalanche would be well served to learn how to use it.

  3. Doodie Machetto on

Carp, Dubi isn’t a good comparable because Dubi was signing his third contract, not his second.

  4. Doodie Machetto on

Giroux’s second contract was also 3.5 million, but he was coming off 47 points in the regular season and a nearly point per game clip in the playoffs. If Duchene went nearly point per game in the playoffs, I’d say 3.5 would be just fine.

  5. Doodie Machetto on

Kreijci’s second contract was for 3.75 after 73 points in 82 games and 8 points in 11 playoff games.

  6. Doodie Machetto on

3.25 would have been fair for O’Reilly given his two-way play. Duchene’s qualifying offer was too high to make that possible.

  7. first comes the real hockey talk – check
next comes the talk about the business of hockey – check
not long after will be the blog-changing arguments

  8. I can’t wait until The Kreider is back up here to set more incredibly narrow and specific records.

  9. Gravy, You Know You Want Some Marty on

Thanks for those numbers Doodie. O’Reilly turned down 2 years, $7M. So I highly doubt he’s going to sign for less than $4M per and is said to be looking for $5M per.

  10. Fat Guy
I think it was rubella that messed up Tortorella, who once was mistaken for Othello for his short fuze-allo, he ate a portabello to cure his bad patella.

  11. O’Reilly isn’t worth more than $3.5 mil a year IMO. He’s a solid two-way player, but he’s not a top line guy. 2nd line center at best, probably best suited for the 3rd line though.

  12. O’Reilly is an O’world of problems. It would make sense for him to end up on a team like the Blue Jackets where the team can be his to match his ego.

  13. Also in regards to Kreider, this is the DZ treatment and I’m glad to see it now that the team is apparently healthy again.

  14. ThisYearsModel on

Good for Kreider. He is better off in Hartford than to be playing 4:00 in NY. Mybe he will ditch his skills and become a lesser-skilled defensive specialist speedster like Hagelin…..then he might get called back up.

  15. Actually, having players out is not a good excuse. Good teams always prevail through injuries, and good coaches never make that excuse. I love Torts I really do, but Im starting to think the guy has a short shelf life with one team.

When he first came to the Rangers up until last year his attitude seemed different. Accountability was a huge thing, but now excuses. We absolutely should not be in this position the way our roster looks even with Nash out.

I hope Torts gets this team back in gear, but Im having serious doubts. I would also suggest to not believe one freaking thing msg says as to the Rangers woes.

  16. Also, this stuff about DiPietro is really, really sad. A lot of people are telling him to shut up because he makes a lot of money which is just really insensitive, mean, wrong and only serves to reinforce stigma about depression. Money isn’t everything.

Guess I’m done poking fun at his expense for a long while.

  17. Manny:

UPDATE: DiPietro tells Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post that he was being facetious in making the suicide comment.

  18. I would actually take a claim on Tostitoes. He’s better than Haley. Send him to protect Kreider in the AHL and when we need an all out goon we can bring him up. Beats having Bickel waste his life in our press box.

  19. Tostitoes would then want his front teeth back from Bickel.

I would hit flush on that claim Manny :)

  20. How about Staal to the Canes, Faulk to Colorado, OReilly to the Rangers, win/win/win for everyone.

  21. #Truce

I wonder what’s going to happen when our next guy gets cheapshotted and concussed…

Will there be a penalty called? 5 minute major? Fine? Suspension?

Someone needs to send a message, I wish Tort would send a message through the media regardless of any fine that would come his way.

  22. Carp, have you heard anything about DelZotto having a broken bone in his foot? I saw it mentioned on another site.

  23. Shocked how many of you spend time talking about the biggest former clown and current cast-off from one of our most bitter rivals.

The only good thing Tostito’s ever did was provide Richards ammo for his best moment as a Ranger, when he stated something to the effect of, “Have fun in your fantasy camp”.

Rangers will be fine, Torts hasn’t lost his metal and the ship will be righted.

Smart money says Hank will start stealing games and the goals will start to fall. Similarly places smart money says the PP isn’t going to creep north of the bottom half anytime soon and I’m getting nervous about Richards finding his legs again.

Looking for Hagelin, McDonagh, Miller, Gabby and Nash to score tonight. Yup. FIVE goals.

  24. going to have to substantiate that “how many of you spend time” thing since maybe 5 seconds was devoted to the guy

and if you don’t think it makes perfect sense that a guy who’s got friction with numerous Rangers would end up on the Rangers maybe you haven’t been paying attention to Glenn Sather

  25. are you Dudley from Too Close For Comfort, or Arnold’s best friend Dudley from Different Strokes?

  26. Yea. That Richards quote was hilarious. I think Tostitoes was mouthing off and Richards said, “enjoy it. It’s fantasy camp for you. Fantasy camp”

  27. I don’t want him but the Rangers have a nonexistent 4th line and he seems exactly like the kind of hump Sather would target

  28. Ok. I stand corrected. Screw Sestito. Just actually convert Bickel to a 4th line Forward and use the big lug.

  29. But Lloyd. Those two goals came in the same game. If that production doesn’t count for Gaborik then it shouldn’t count for Tostitoes.

  30. Lloyd – There’ve been comments on both this and the last post – far more than I would have expected. Sorry my observation wasn’t the same as yours?

While I’m well aware of Darth Sathers previous indiscretions (Brashear comes right to mind) – I dont have to like it, do I? As an athl…. former athlete, I never liked when a guy talked more than he played and as a fan of this team, would prefer not to have that clown represent our franchise and it’s collective history.

We didnt use John Scott when we had him – why pick up an even less impressive version? Candidly, I wasnt for the Asham signing but dont mind him in the least now….

  31. kind of missing the point, Manny. no one is expecting Sestito to score goals was just mentioning that to highlight the ineptitude of the Ranger center. Brad Richards last scored a goal more than 1 calendar month ago and he’s making approximately $6 million more than Sestito.

  32. Fourth Line? We need to worry about our 1-3rd lines before shuffling #4 no?

Haley can bang as needed as could Mashinter (apparently?)… Bickel loves having his face rearranged and Asham is suited as well. Tostito is SLOW. Do we really want that with our dump and chase strategy? Give me another D. Powe (jersey boy – Princeton) before a slow lumbering stone handed d-bag.

  33. And…. no one was arguing that Richards was playing well ;-) Guyjust looks disinterested most of the time and carries the same posture Mark Sanchez has become famous for…. post butt fumble.

  34. As of tonight Asham will have missed more than a third of the season due to injuries – I like the guy but he’s missed too much time to be considered a factor.

Michael Haley and Mashinter are in the AHL.

    Stu Bickel can’t play.

    So yeah, bodies are needed.

  35. Sestito is not better than Haley. He’s terrible. No idea why people want him when all he can do is fight.

  36. Doodie Machetto on

“He’s a solid two-way player, but he’s not a top line guy. 2nd line center at best, probably best suited for the 3rd line though.”

I disagree. This guy is a poor man’s Jonathan Toews. In other words, he’s Patrice Bergeron.

  37. Dudley, I believe you may have stumbled onto this blog by mistake.

Macro views and assessing blame when the shoe fits are normally unique here.

As are a number of posters whose species status is presently being debated by the Paleontology Society to create a new human growth period.

  38. Exactly – we have better players in the AHL than a guy you are lobbying should be on the squad. I’d take Haley or Mashinter (who showed VERY little) over Sestito 10/10 times.

Cant see a single redeeming factor for the guy let alone in a league that’s minimizing the importance of the pure-play enforcer? He’s not a character guy, not a skill guy, not fast and not lucky. He’s an “ok” fighter and that might be generous. Most importantly, he’s a clown – I have plenty of Flyers fans for friends and none enjoyed when he was on the ice as a result of his upside being…. what exactly?

  39. Just when we thought we were running out of material, we hear in the distance:

“Here I come to save the day”

  40. Comnsnse – Thanks for the heads-up. Must have been a mistake I’ve been making for the past 5 years or so then. But thanks for sneaking the lovely word “Macro” into my free time.

  41. Doodie Machetto on

Maybe they can grab him off of waivers for one day so he can come to our fantasy camp. Then waive him again.

  42. Dudley:

I repeat, I did not say I want Sestito – in fact if you actually read my posts you’d see I said, “I don’t want him.” Can’t make it any clearer than that.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the Rangers should pursue a 4th line forward

  43. Lloyd – I was kidding. I was more making fun of the people who are like, “Gaborik Sucks. Sure he scores but those goals all come in the same game!”

  44. Because Fighting RULES, Jonny.

Which is why I want Bickel converted into a 4th line forward and playing. Give the guy 8 minutes a game.

  45. Doodie Machetto on

I want Bickel converted to a forward because GOOD GOD ANYTHING TO GET HIM AWAY FROM PLAYING DEFENSE FOR US.

  46. “But that doesn’t change the fact that the Rangers should pursue a 4th line forward”

Asham-Halpern-Powe perfectly fine as a 4th line. Sure I would rather have a more rugged player than Halpern, but the 4th line is not going to real effect on the season.

The Rangers need more from Richards, Gaborik, Boyle and Kreider (fair or not) and Nash needs to put up some goals although he has played very well all season.

That will solve all our problems since Hagelin, Stepan and Callahan have done very well recently…

  47. Yes, Bickel is like an H-back…For the love of the Bob and Doug McKenzie, invent a position to keep his head in the game

  48. Yup. That’s the reason, Doodie. Bickel as a forward is completely fine with me. He’s our guy that punches people in the face. Scores 1-2 goals a year and we all have a good laugh, “Look at the big idiot put the puck in the net!” Hahahah, etc.

  49. Bickel moves like Jason from Friday the 13th out there…I wonder if you hear that scary breathing when he’s on the ice

  50. Carp, it was a comment made on a Ranger thread on BigBlueInteractive. There was no linc. I am not trying to rumor monger. Just thought I might have missed something over the past few days.

  51. Doodie Machetto on

I think it makes a difference though when a guy is doing things at 20 compared to a guy doing things at 24.

ilb, just to be clear, my comment wasn’t directed at your comment.

  55. of course it’s inappropriate, she’s a comic (and a brilliant one). it’s not her job to be tasteful.

  56. I’m kind of intrigued by the idea of trading Staal instead of Del Zaster………..(not actually into it yet)

  57. Rivers is herself Jewish, and from Larchmont, NY. Guess she felt she could get away with it, but some things just are not even close to appropriate. And that’s coming from an Irishman who gets a good laugh out of almost anything.

  58. She also called Obama’s wife “Blackie O.” I admit I laughed. A lot less ignorant than frivolously joking about humans and ovens. But, on to hockey.

  59. Joan Rivers is an insult comic. She’s like Don Rickles. From the old school. One of the hardest working women in show business. And she’s hysterical. Her “Fashion Police” is one of the few shows that I watch with Mrs. Manny instead of completely not paying attention.

  60. so 200-year old anti-black bigotry is ok but the holocaust is off-limits

    thanks for letting me know

So Kreider gets sent down until his offensive skills become totally dormant. Than and only than will he be brougt back up. Or he can learn how to just always skate five feet from the boards and never ever skate towards or pass the puck towards the middle of the ice and face the wrath of the lunatic coach for trying to make a creative play. You see, he needs to learn how to play knock hockey. He did the same thing to MDz. This kid came in with alot of offensive flair and creativity. Now he is afraid to make a play and risk a mistake. If Greatzky played for John Tortarenney, he would be benched as well. Before I get the ” but he coached, Vinny L, St.louis, Boyle” etc comments, let me say I agree, he did. That John Tortorella is the coach I thought I was getting, not the second coming of Tom Renney.

It is time for Tortorenney to go. I am sick and tired of a coach who thinks Hockey is a game that is predicated on notion that the purpose of this game is to give up less goals than your opponent. This game is not 90% defense. Sorry!

Kreider has been beyond awful so far this season. He has 1 goal and 1 assist in 11 games and has a grand total of 5 SOG. That’s the same as Aaron Asham, 1 more than Ferry-O and 3 more than Stu Bickel, Brandon Mashinter and Christian Thomas.

Kreider has no business being on the team right now and should be in HFD until he starts producing there.

  68. Gravy, You Know You Want Some Marty on

Kreider made the team solely because he had some success in the playoffs and because there was no training camp to compete in. He hasn’t earned anything. We all want him to be good, it’s just not the right time.

How could I watch him play? He has been saddled playing with super center Bryan Boyle or that offensive wiz Jeff Halpern. Which means he either can’t ever recieve a pass, which for someone known to be a finisher with a good shot is a bad thing. Or he gets 5 minutes a night playing on the fourth line. When he played with Cally on one wing and JT Miller at center, he certainly did ok. But that was only 4 games. I didnt see the last three games, still in Milan until Sunday. By now though, the kid’s head is all screwed up and he is playing like he is afraid to make a mistake.

Boyle has 1A in 14 games. As that translates to 6 A assists and ZERO goals in an 82 game season. Not exactly stellar numbers for a number 3 center who gets a ton of ice time.

He earned his spot on the team by virtue of his being the best forward in the Devils series and the best or second best forward in the Caps series despite that one game where the lunatic coach benched him for trying to make a play that resulted in a goal that Lundquist should have easily stopped.
